Hydrogen is crucial in achieving global energy transition and carbon neutrality goals. Existing market estimates typically presume linear or exponential growth but fail to consider how market demand responds to the declining cost of underlying technologies. To address this, this study utilizes a learning curve model to project the cost of electrolyzers and its subsequent impact on hydrogen market, aligning with a premise that the market demand is proportional to the cost of hydrogen. In a case study of China's hydrogen market, projecting from 2020 to 2060, we observed substantial differences in market evolution compared to exponential growth scenarios. Contrary to exponential growth scenarios, China's hydrogen market experiences faster growth during the 2020–2040 period rather than later. Such differences underscore the necessity for proactive strategic planning in emerging technology markets, particularly for those experiencing rapid cost decline, such as hydrogen. We assess the associations between personality traits and co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI from adolescence to early adulthood. We employed a nationally representative cohort in China from 2010 to 2020 year. We included adolescents aged 10–19 years without depressive symptoms and unhealthy weight status (obesity, overweight, or thinness) at baseline and excluded those without any measurement of depressive symptoms or BMI at follow-ups. We assessed baseline personality traits in 7 dimensions of conscientiousness, openness, neuroticism, agreeableness, extraversion, self-esteem, and responsibility. We also assessed the combined effects of these 7 dimensions of personality traits by generating individual-level personality trait risk scores based on the weighted sum of all these 7 dimensions of personality traits. We measured the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI using both a single measurement of depressive symptoms and BMI at the last follow-up and repeated measurements of them over 10 years. We used the multinomial logistic regression models to examine the exposure-outcome associations. At baseline, we included 1778 individuals (mean age: 14.4 year; female: 853 (48.0%)). At follow-ups, we observed increased risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI per 1-SD increase in neuroticism score (1.95–2.38 odds ratio) or 1-SD decrease in self-esteem and conscientiousness (0.63–0.80 odds ratio; all P values < 0.05); we observed no evidence of associations between openness, agreeableness, extraversion, or responsibility and the risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI (all P values > 0.05). For the combined effects of the 7 dimensions of personality traits, we found an elevated risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI per 1-SD increase in the personality trait risk scores (OR (95% CI), single measurement at the last follow-up: 2.01, 1.66 to 2.43; trajectory classification using the repeated measurements 2.30, 1.55 to 3.42; average level using the repeated measurements: 2.27, 1.93 to 2.67). In this national cohort in China, personality traits were found to be associated with the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and high BMI from adolescence to early adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of stratifying individuals based on their personality traits and providing targeted interventions for those at risk of comorbid depression and obesity. • Study assesses renewable potential using data with high spatio-temporal resolution. • China's wind and solar can provide 1.5 times its 2050 expected electricity demand. • There are disparities in renewable development potential across China's regions. • Wind and solar energy have different but complementary seasonal patterns. • Wind exhibits high seasonal variability while solar exhibits high intra-day variability. This study aims to provide a detailed spatial and temporal characterization of China's wind and solar energy resource potential. Quantifying this potential is necessary to identify pathways to achieve a deep decarbonization of its electric power system as this nation pursues carbon neutrality by 2060. This study identifies and characterizes sites suitable for onshore wind and ground-mounted solar PV deployment, quantifies their electricity generation potential, and assesses their spatial heterogeneity across the country and temporal variability throughout the seasons. Resource potential estimates are obtained by combining the latest data with high spatiotemporal resolution with a geographic information system (GIS) analysis that compiles information on wind and solar energy resources, land use, surface elevation and slope, and geomorphology. Results show that China's vast resource potential for wind and solar is enough to provide one-and-a-half times 2050′s expected electricity demand. Results also demonstrate that China's resource-rich areas do not correspond to demand centers, except for provinces like Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu, which have high electricity demand and renewable potential. The seasonal patterns show that China should develop wind and solar energy simultaneously, to exploit wind's highest potential during winter and early spring, and solar's higher production during late spring and summer. These findings shed light on the sites that should be prioritized for renewable development and the need to expand power transmission capacity connecting energy-rich areas with load centers, and energy storage capacity and flexible resources to balance variable renewable output with load. China is pursuing aggressive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its coal-dominated electric power system. Two key strategies are power market reform and carbon pricing. This paper investigates the combined effects of these two strategies in reducing CO 2 emissions from power system operations. We develop an economic dispatch model to simulate hourly power supply system operation in China Southern Power Grid in 2018 under fifteen carbon pricing scenarios; these reflect a wide range of policy ambition, from today's carbon prices to much higher ones that aim to instigate aggressive emission mitigation. Our results show that moderate carbon pricing alone is insufficient to effectively reduce CO 2 emissions without concurrent power market reform. With power market reform and as carbon prices increase, large coal units supplemented by energy storage witness higher use rates as they supplant smaller coal-fired generators, until a carbon price of 300 RMB/TCO 2 phases out coal use in favor of natural gas. Only at carbon prices higher than 300 RMB/TCO 2 do emissions begin to decrease appreciably. Geographic disparities emerge among the five provinces that comprise the Southern Power Grid, with Guangdong witnessing the most CO 2 emission reduction at high carbon prices, while emission reductions in other provinces are negligible. Carbon pricing also dramatically increases total power system costs, even at low carbon prices. Our results show the necessity of introducing power market reform and carbon pricing policies concurrently if the goal is to reduce CO 2 emissions, with the ultimate goal being a carbon price significantly greater than 300 RMB/TCO 2. Because both options will be necessary, our research maps a path to deep emission reductions in China Southern Power Grid for investors, analysts, and policy makers as discussions regarding both reforms accelerate. • We assess combined effects of carbon pricing and power market reform in China. • Carbon pricing cannot reduce CO 2 emissions without power market reform. • CO 2 reductions from carbon pricing are negligible until prices of 300 RMB/TCO 2. • Even with low carbon prices, power supply system cost increase appreciably. • Existing system can only achieve shallow decarbonization, even at 1000RMB/TCO 2. Abstract: Since April 2006, swine herds have experienced the outbreaks of a highly pathogenic porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in China. To explore the possible mechanism of the emergence of the highly pathogenic PRRS and more fully understand the extent of genetic diversity of PRRSV in China, we analyzed the ORF5 gene sequences of 159 representative PRRSV isolates in 16 provinces from 2006 to 2008. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed that all these 159 isolates belonged to the North American genotype and were further divided into six subgenotypes; 140 of 159 isolates were closely related to the highly pathogenic PRRSV with 98.5–100% nucleotide and 98.3–100% amino acid sequence identities and belonged to Subgenotype I; and 3, 8, 4, 3, 1 of 159 isolates were part of Subgenotypes II–VI, respectively. Amino acid analysis of the GP5 protein revealed that all the isolates in Subgenotypes I–III were found to be highly variable in the primary neutralizing epitope; most of the isolates in Subgenotypes I and IV had more glycosylation sites than those in Subgenotypes II, III, V and VI; and 1, 5, and 9 unique amino acid mutations were observed in Subgenotypes I, IV and VI, respectively. In conclusion, our study provides the evidence of coexistence of six different subgenotype isolates in pigs in China from 2006 to 2008, and emphasizes the importance of reinforcing PRRSV surveillance, especially after the emergence of highly pathogenic PRRS in China. Objective: To explore the association between self-control and the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity from adolescence to early adulthood in the Chinese population, and to provide a scientific basis for personalized interventions targeting individuals with different risks in the future., Methods: From a prospective cohort study that lasted for 10 years: The China family panel studies (CFPS), a total of 608 children and adolescents meeting the following inclusion and exclusion criteria were included as study subjects: (1) Aged 10 to 19 years, at normal weight according to Chinese standards, and without depressive symptom in 2010; (2) Had self-control scores, and with at least two measurements of depressive symptoms and body mass index (BMI) between 2010 and 2020; (3) The only one or the youngest child and adolescent from each family. The co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity was defined in three ways: Both of the average level of standardized scores of depressive symptoms and BMI Z-scores across multiple measurements over time were at a high level, or both of the trajectories of depressive symptoms and BMI over time based on the latent classification trajectory model (LCTM) belonging to the "risk-type", or individuals had depressive symptoms and overweight/obesity at the last follow-up survey. The multinomial Logistic regression model was used to examine the association between standardized scores of self-control and the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity., Results: The score of self-control was associated with the co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity when using healthy individuals as the reference group after adjusting for age (years), gender (male/female), area (urban/rural), weekly physical activity duration (high/low), parental education level (college or above/high school or below), parental weight status (overweight or obese or not), and parental depressive symptoms (with depressive symptoms or not), regardless of the definition of the risk population. Specifically, the risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity was reduced by 33% (95% CI : 14% to 48%, based on the average level across multiple measurements over time) to 78% (95% CI : 6% to 95%, based on the joint trajectories of depressive symptoms and BMI over time) per 1-standard deviation (1-SD) increase in self-control score. In addition, the risk of depressive-symptom-dominant and overweight-or-obesity-dominant was reduced by 25% (95% CI : 4% to 42%, only based on the average level across multiple measurements over time) and 21% (95% CI : 1% to 37%, only based on the joint trajectories of depressive symptoms and BMI over time) per 1-SD increase in self-control score, respectively. The results from sensitivity analysis that defined individuals' weight status according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards were consistent with our main findings., Conclusion: Individuals with higher self-control scores from adolescence to early adulthood have a lower risk of co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity, suggesting that personalized interventions for co-occurrence of depressive symptoms and overweight or obesity can be carried out based on self-control scores in the future.

Background: Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A variety of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to be significantly involved in vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation, which is an essential process for atherosclerotic plaque formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of lncRNA urothelial cancer associated 1 (UCA1) involvement in atherosclerosis. Method: The effects of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) and UCA1 on VSMC proliferation and colony-forming ability was measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and western blots, as well as to determine the effect that oxLDL has on UCA1 expression, and the effect of oxLDL and UCA1 on the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2). Results: oxLDL treatment increased the proliferation rate of VSMCs in a concentration-dependent manner. Importantly, UCA1 apparently increased the viability of VSMCs as the VSMCs exhibited a significantly reduced growth rate when UCA1 expression was knocked down by specific small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). In conjunction with increasing cell viability, oxLDL also enhanced the colony-forming ability of VSMCs while UCA1 siRNA decreased the colony-forming ability of VSMCs. Furthermore, UCA1 significantly decreased the percentage of VSMCs in G1 phase, while increasing their percentage in S phase. In contract siRNA knockdown of UCA1 caused an increased percentage of cell in G1 phase, and a reduction in the percentage of cells in S phase. Using real-time PCR and western blot assays, we showed that oxLDL significantly increased the expression levels of UCA1 and CDK2. Furthermore, UCA1 siRNA and CDK2 siRNA almost abolished the positive effect of oxLDL on CDK2 expression. Finally, overexpression of UCA1 induced an increase in CDK2 levels, and knockdown of UCA1 caused inhibition of CDK2 expression. Conclusion: Upregulation of UCA1 enhances abnormal proliferation of VSMC by promoting G1/S transition through modulating the expression of CDK2.
