Dental age estimation plays a key role in therapeutic, medicolegal, forensic, and anthropological applications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the research progress on dental age estimation using bibliometric analysis. Data were gathered from Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed. Keyword co-occurrence analysis, collaboration network analysis, and descriptive analysis of bibliographic data were all completed using VOS viewer and Biblioshiny software. There has been an ongoing but gradual rise in research regarding dental age estimation, with notable increase since 2014. The country with the most publications published (205) was India. The year of 2018 (TP = 92) and 2021 (TP = 100) saw a rapid spike in publications and citations, respectively. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, which has 153 citations, was the most productive institution. Forensic Science International was the journal with the greatest number of publications (73). Author Cameriere had the maximum number of publications (30). The increase in publications associated to collaboration across numerous authors, nations, and institutes serves as evidence of the significant improvement in dental age estimation. This citation analysis allows for the identification of the most relevant and pertinent research fields while providing a view on the development of research in the field of dental age estimation.

Ecological restoration of freshwater ecosystems is now being implemented to mitigate anthropogenic disruption. Most emphasis is placed on assessing physico-chemical and hydromorphological properties to monitor restoration progress. However, less is known about the structural integrity and ecosystem health of aquatic ecosystems. In particular, little is known about how ecosystem function changes following river habitat restoration, especially in China. Leaf litter decomposition can be used as an indicator of stream ecosystem integrity. Therefore, the leaf breakdown rate was measured to assess the ecosystem function of restored rivers. By comparing leaf breakdown rates in urban rivers undergoing habitat restoration with that in degraded urban rivers and rivers in forested areas (i.e., reference conditions), we aimed to determine: (i) how habitat restoration affected leaf litter decomposition? (ii) the relationship between leaf litter decomposition to both environmental (habitat and physico-chemical variables) and biological factors (benthic communities), and (iii) identify the factors that contribute most to the variance in leaf litter breakdown rates. The results demonstrated a significant increase in leaf breakdown rate (120% in summer and 28% in winter) in the restored rivers compared to the degraded rivers. All environmental and biotic factors evaluated contributed synergistically to the differences in leaf litter decomposition among the three river types. The role of macroinvertebrates, mainly shredders, appeared to be particularly important, contributing 52% (summer) and 33% (winter) to the variance in decomposition, followed by habitat characteristics (e.g. substrate diversity, water velocity; 17% in summer, 29% in winter), physico-chemical variables (e.g. nutrient and organic pollutants; 11% in summer, 1% in winter) and biofilm bacteria (0% in summer, 15% in winter). Habitat restoration positively affected the structure and function of the previously degraded streams. Streams and surrounding terrestrial ecosystems are closely linked by numerous resource subsidies including anthropogenic subsidies which are increasingly entering streams due to intensive human activities. Also, streams are threatened by stressors such as glyphosate-the most widely used herbicide worldwide. However, the ecological consequences of anthropogenic subsidies and glyphosate on freshwaters are not fully understood. Here, we deployed leaf litter (Cinnamomum camphora) bags containing neither, either, or both treatments of anthropogenic carrion subsidy (chicken meat) and glyphosate (coated in agar) in four streams, which had different land use (i.e., forest, village, and suburban) in Huangshan, Anhui Province, China. We aimed to investigate the individual and combined effects of anthropogenic carrion subsidy and glyphosate on macroinvertebrates in streams and whether these effects differ with land use change. Macroinvertebrate communities significantly differed among streams: biodiversity index and total taxon richness were highest in village streams and lowest in suburban stream. Overall effects of carrion subsidy and glyphosate on macroinvertebrates were not significant. However, several taxa were affected in one or more streams by the individual or combined effects of carrion subsidy and glyphosate, indicating the importance of local community structure and physical habitats in driving the response of macroinvertebrates to carrion subsidy and glyphosate. Collectively, these results imply that the effects of carrion subsidy and glyphosate on macroinvertebrates are site-specific, and future studies should cover more streams and last longer time to better understand the ecological mechanisms driving such pattern.

Taihu Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in China and serves as an important source for drinking water. This lake is suffering from eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms and fecal pollution, and the inflow Tiaoxi River is one of the main contributors. The goal here was to characterize the bacterial community structure of Tiaoxi River water by next-generation sequencing (NGS), paying attention to bacteria that are either fecal-associated or pathogenic, and to examine the relationship between environmental parameters and bacterial community structure. Water samples collected from 15 locations in three seasons, and fecal samples collected from different hosts and wastewater samples were used for bacterial community analysis. The phyla Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Cyanobacteria were predominant in most of the water samples tested. In fecal samples, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were abundant, while wastewater samples were dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Chloroflexi. The cluster analysis and principal coordinate analysis indicated that bacterial community structure was significantly different between water, fecal and sewage samples. Shared OTUs between water samples and chicken, pig, and human fecal samples ranged from 4.5 to 9.8% indicating the presence of avian, pig and human fecal contamination in Tiaoxi River. At genus level, five bacterial genera of fecal origin and sequences of seven potential pathogens were detected in many locations and their presence was correlated well with the land use pattern. The sequencing data revealed that Faecalibacterium could be a potential target for human-associated microbial source-tracking qPCR assays. Our results suggest that pH, conductivity, and temperature were the main environmental factors in shaping the bacterial community based on redundancy analysis. Overall, NGS is a valuable tool for preliminary investigation of environmental samples to identify the potential human health risk, providing specific information about fecal and potentially pathogenic bacteria that can be followed up by specific methods., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Urbanization is increasing worldwide and is happening at a rapid rate in China in line with economic development. Urbanization can lead to major changes in freshwater environments through multiple chemical and microbial contaminants. We assessed the impact of urbanization on physicochemical characteristics and microbial loading in canals in Suzhou, a city that has experienced rapid urbanization in recent decades. Nine sampling locations covering three urban intensity classes (high, medium and low) in Suzhou were selected for field studies and three locations in Huangshan (natural reserve) were included as pristine control locations. Water samples were collected for physicochemical, microbiological and molecular analyses. Compared to medium and low urbanization sites, there were statistically significant higher levels of nutrients and total and thermotolerant coliforms (or fecal coliforms) in highly urbanized locations. The effect of urbanization was also apparent in the abundances of human-associated fecal markers and bacterial pathogens in water samples from highly urbanized locations. These results correlated well with land use types and anthropogenic activities at the sampling sites. The overall results indicate that urbanization negatively impacts water quality, providing high levels of nutrients and a microbial load that includes fecal markers and pathogens.

Reservoir sediment is one of the most stressful environments for microorganisms due to periodically oxygen minimum conditions. In this study, the abundance and composition of bacteria associated with sediments from three drinking water reservoirs (Zhoucun, ZCR; Shibianyu, SBYR; and Jinpen, JPR) were investigated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and 16S rRNA-based 454 pyrosequencing. The results of physico-chemical analysis of sediments showed that the organic matter and total nitrogen were significantly higher in ZCR as compared to JPR (P < 0.01). The bacterial abundance was 9.13 × 10(6), 1.14 × 10(7), and 6.35 × 10(6) copies/ng DNA in sediments of SBYR, ZCR, and JPR, respectively (P < 0.01). The pyrosequencing revealed a total of 9,673 operational taxonomic units, which were affiliated with 17 phyla. The dominant phylum was Firmicutes (56.83%) in JPR; whereas, the dominance of Proteobacteria was observed in SBYR with 40.38% and ZCR with 39.56%. The Shannon-Wiener diversity (H') was high in ZCR; whereas, Chao 1 richness was high in SBYR. The dominant genera were Clostridium with 42.15% and Bacillus with 20.44% in JPR. Meanwhile, Dechloromonas with 14.80% and Smithella with 7.20% were dominated in ZCR, and Bacillus with 45.45% and Acinetobacter with 5.15% in SBYR. The heat map profiles and redundancy analysis indicated substantial differences in sediment bacterial community composition among three reservoirs. Moreover, it appears from the results that physico-chemical variables of sediments including pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorous played key roles in shaping the bacterial community diversity. The results obtained from this study will broaden our understanding on the bacterial community structure of sediments in oxygen minimum and stressful freshwater environments.
