Ni and Co elements in superalloy scraps are scarce metal resources in China, and recycling these metal elements has great environmental and economic significance. This present study proposes a novel and efficient recycling process for the recovery of nickel and cobalt elements from superalloy leaching solution. The superalloy leaching solution reacted with NaOH solution to obtain precipitates. Then, the precipitates were mixed with Na2CO3 and roasted at high temperature. After sodium roasting, Al and Cr elements were removed by water leaching to obtain pure NiO and CoO as raw materials for preparing ternary precursors. As the nuclear part of this process, the impacts of sodium roasting on the water leaching behaviors of Al and Cr elements from Ni and Co sediments was investigated. Under suitable conditions of sodium roasting, the leaching efficiencies of Al and Cr elements are 99.11% and 99.39%. Background: With the rapid growth of an aging global population and proportion, the prevalence of frailty is constantly increasing. Therefore, finding a frailty assessment tool suitable for clinical application by physicians has become the primary link in the comprehensive management of frailty in elderly patients. This study used the (fr) AGILE scale to investigate the frailty status of elderly patients from internal medicine wards and identified relevant factors that affect the severity of frailty. Method: In this study, 408 elderly inpatients in internal medicine departments of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from May 2021 to August 2022 were enrolled as research subjects, and a cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Researchers evaluated the frailty based on the (fr)AGILE scale score. The general condition, past medical history, physical examination, laboratory examination, nutrition control score, intervention and treatment measures and other elderly patient information was collected. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relevant factors that affect the severity of frailty and hospitalization costs. Results: According to the (fr)AGILE scale score, the elderly patients were divided into groups to determine whether they were frail and the severity of the frailty. Among them, 164 patients were in the prefrailty stage, which accounted for 40.2%. There were 188 cases of mild frailty that accounted for 46.1%, and 56 cases of moderate to severe frailty that accounted for 13.7%. Decreased grip strength, elevated white blood cell levels, and low sodium and potassium are independent risk factors affecting the severity of frailty. As the severity of frailty increases, the proportion of sodium, potassium, albumin supplementation as well as anti-infection gradually increases. Conclusion: Frailty is a common elderly syndrome with a high incidence among elderly patients in internal medicine departments. The main manifestations of frailty vary with different severity levels. Inflammation, anemia, and poor nutritional status can lead to an increase in the severity of frailty as well as blood hypercoagulability, myocardial damage, and additional supportive interventions. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of sodium hyaluronate eye drops on tear film stability and tear secretion in patients suffering from rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGPCL)-associated xerophthalmia. Methods: 88 patients treated at Shangrao Aier Eye Hospital, China with RGPCL-associated xerophthalmia were enrolled in this study from May 2021 to May 2022. They were randomly and equally divided into two groups: a study group (treated with sodium hyaluronate eye drops) and a control group (treated with meibomian gland massage). Tear secretion parameters (lacrimal river width, Schirmer I test (S1t), tear fluid lysozyme content), tear film stability indicators (tear film break-up time, tear film thickness, corneal fluorescein staining score), ocular surface disease index (OSDI), therapeutic effect and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results: Following the treatment, study group exhibited significantly improved tear secretion compared to control group (p < 0.05). Similarly, tear film stability indicators significantly improved in study group after treatment, accompanied by a reduction in corneal fluorescein staining score (p < 0.05). Although both groups showed decreased OSDI scores after treatment, the reduction was more substantial in study group. Additionally, the therapeutic effect and incidence of adverse reactions were superior in study group compared to control group. Conclusion: The use of sodium hyaluronate eye drops in the treatment of patients with RGPCLassociated xerophthalmia enhances tear secretion, and improves tear film stability and therapeutic outcomes, leading to a reduction in ocular surface disease index and the incidence of adverse reactions. Sodium pentachlorophenol (PCP-Na) is widespread in the marine environment; however, its impact on marine organisms remains under-researched. Moerella iridescens and Exopalaemon carinicauda are marine species of economic importance in China and under threat from PCP-Na pollution. Thus, this study aimed to assess the toxicity and detoxification metabolism of PCP-Na on M. iridescens and E. carinicauda. The study revealed that the 96 h median lethal concentration (LC50) of PCP-Na for M. iridescens and E. carinicauda were 9.895 mg/L and 14.143 mg/L, respectively. A species sensitivity distribution (SSD) for PCP-Na was developed specifically for marine organisms, determining a hazardous concentration to 5% of the species (HC5) of 0.047 mg/L. During the sub-chronic exposure period, PCP-Na accumulated significantly in M. iridescens and E. carinicauda, with highest concentrations of 41.22 mg/kg in the soft tissues of M. iridescens, 42.58 mg/kg in the hepatopancreas of E. carinicauda, and only 0.85 mg/kg in the muscle of E. carinicauda. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that detoxifying metabolic enzymes and antioxidant defense system enzymes of E. carinicauda responded stronger to PCP-Na compared to M. iridescens, suggesting that E. carinicauda may possess a stronger detoxification capacity. Notably, five biomarkers were identified and proposed for monitoring and evaluating PCP-Na contamination. Overall, the results indicated that M. iridescens and E. carinicauda exhibit greater tolerance to PCP-Na than other marine species, but they are susceptible to accumulating PCP-Na in their tissues, posing a significant health risk. The occurrence and separation relationships of Na and maceral groups in Zhundong coals were investigated in this study. The sequential extraction results indicate that the total Na content of all samples decreased with increasing sampling depth, and the level in inertinite-enriched samples (inertinite content 81.0%–84.0%) was significantly higher than that in corresponding raw coals and vitrinite-enriched samples (vitrinite content 90%). Additionally, H2O-Na (soluble salt species) and insoluble Na (acid-insoluble residues) were found to be concentrated in the inertinite-enriched samples. In combined SEM–EDS and microscope observations, local Na enrichments were detected in all raw coal and inertinite-enriched samples except for the vitrinite-enriched samples, but only inertinite-enriched samples were found to generally have over 10 wt% of Na enrichments, all of which occurred as NaCl. Moreover, Na is mostly filled or associated with cell-filling minerals in cells of fusinite. The maceral separation and Na removal of Zhundong coal were simultaneously achieved using triboelectrostatic separation. The vitrinite content in concentrates increased up to 60%, along with a reduced Na level, while the inertinite and sodium levels were both evidently raised in tailings. The obvious positive occurrence and separation correlation between sodium and inertinite offers new insight into, and a technical reference for, the sodium removal and maceral processing of Zhundong coal. Houttuynia cordata is an herbal compound that grows in China and exhibits anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. Additionally, pyroptosis is mediated by the activated NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome after stimulation by various inflammatory factors in asthma. To investigate the effect of sodium houttuyfonate on NLRP3 inflammasome-related pyroptosis and Th1/Th2 immune imbalance in asthma. Asthmatic mice model were made, sodium houttuyfonate was injected intraperitoneally to treat the asthmatic mice. Airway reactivity, cell classification and counting in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were measured. Hematoxylin-eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining were used to analyze airway inflammation and mucus hypersecretion. Beas-2b cells were cultured, LPS, NLRP3 antagonist (Mcc950) and sodium houttuyfonate were used to intervene the Beas-2b cells, NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, GSDMD, IL-1β, and IL-18 expression in the lung tissue and cells were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and western blot, while qRT- PCR was performed to analyze the mRNA contents in the pulmonary and the cells, respectively. Th1 and Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IFN-γ) were detected with ELISA and the proportions of Th1 and Th2 in splenocyte were detected by flow cytometry. Airway reactivity decreased in sodium houttuyfonate group when compared with asthmatic group mice. In the BALF, the numbers of leukocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages were significantly lower in sodium houttuyfonate group mice than in asthmatic group mice. The proportion of TH1/TH2 cells in spleen cells and IFN-γ /IL-4 in plasma increased in sodium houttuyfonate treatment group when compared with asthma group. Immunohistochemistry, western blot and RT-PCR showed that the expressions of NLRP3, ASC, caspase-1, GSDMD, IL-1β and IL-18 were decreased in the lung tissue of mice after treated with sodium houttuyfonate when compared with those in the asthma group. However, sodium houttuyfonate combined with dexamethasone induced a stronger effect on NLRP3-related pyroptosis and Th1/Th2 immune imbalance compared to sodium houttuyfonate or dexamethasone alone. Beas-2b cells were cultured in vitro , sodium houttuyfonate can alleviate LPS-induced ASC, casepase-1, GSDMD, IL-18 and IL-1β increasing, especially in SH (10 μg/ml) treated group, but the effect less than Mcc950. The dissolution of sodium‐containing minerals in high‐temperature geothermal systems can cause Na+ to exceed 400 mg/L with high salinity. But the Na+ of low‐salinity geothermal water is mostly less than 100 mg/L in medium‐low temperature geothermal systems. However, geothermal water with Na+ up to 325.4 mg/L and total dissolved solids less than 650 mg/L was found in the Huangshadong geothermal field, which is a typical medium‐low temperature hydrothermal system in South China. The water chemistry results indicate that thermal groundwater is uniformly HCO3‐Na type with high sodium content (average 240.06 mg/L). All the thermal groundwater and shallow groundwater have the same meteoric origin based on δD and δ18O. According to water chemical geothermometers and multicomponent mineral equilibrium (MME) method, the reservoir temperature is estimated to be 100 to 130 °C at a maximum depth of 2.43 km. The estimation of the Cl− mixed indicator suggests that geothermal water has mixed with 51% to 72% of shallow groundwater, resulting in the reduction of Na+ content in real geothermal water (Na+ up to 685.2 mg/L). The simulated results of water‐rock interactions indicate that mineral dissolution and ion exchange have minor contributions to Na+ enrichment in geothermal water. Hydrochemical simulations and Gibbs diagrams suggest an additional source of high sodium: granite fluid inclusions are fractured into geothermal water at high temperatures. Granite fluid inclusions may only account for 3% to 5% of geothermal water, but they provide the main source of Na+ in geothermal water. Background: We aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new marine oligosaccharide drug, sodium oligomannate (GV-971), developed in China to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: We researched the following databases: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane library, and Scopus until Sep 2022. We used the Cochrane risk of bias tool to assess the risk of bias and the GRADE scale to assess the quality of the evidence. The meta-analysis was performed using review manager 5.4. Results: We included three randomized controlled trials with 1108 patients. Sodium oligomannate improved the AD assessment scale-cognitive subscale compared to the placebo at 12, 24, and 36 weeks (mean difference (MD) = − 0.69, 95% confidence interval (CI) [− 1.23 to − 0.14], p = 0.01), (MD = − 0.68, 95% CI [− 1.26 to − 0.10], P = 0.02), and (MD = − 3.84, 95% CI [− 6.40 to − 1.27], and P = 0.003), respectively. On the other hand, results showed no significance in terms of adverse events and other assessed scales (Clinician's Interview-Based Impression of Change with caregiver input, AD Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory) (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Sodium oligomannate is a well-tolerated and promising drug for Alzheimer's patients. Antidepressant medications are widely used by patients with depression or a depressive disorder. In spite of a generally favorable safety profile of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin - norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSRI/SNRI), several cases of a possible connection between SSRI/SNRI and hyponatremia have been reported. To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with hyponatremia after SSRI/SNRI exposure, and to examine the association between SSRI/SNRI exposure and the presence of hyponatremia in a Chinese population. A retrospective single-center case series study. We performed a retrospective evaluation of inpatients with SSRI/SNRI-induced hyponatremia from a single institution in China between 2018 and 2020. Clinical data were obtained through review of medical records. Patients who met the initial inclusion criteria but did not develop hyponatremia acted as controls. The study was approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Board of Beijing Hospital (Beijing, P.R. China). We identified 26 patients with SSRI/SNRI-induced hyponatremia. The incidence rate of hyponatremia was 1.34% (26/1937) in the study population. The mean age at diagnosis was 72.58 (±12.84) years, with a male: female ratio of 1:1.42. The duration between SSRI/SNRI exposure and the onset of hyponatremia was 7.65 (±4.88) days. The minimum serum sodium level was 2328.23 (±107.25) mg/dL in the study group. Seventeen patients (65.38%) received sodium supplements. Four patients (15.38%) switched to another antidepressant. Fifteen patients (57.69%) recovered by the time of discharge. There were significant differences in serum potassium, serum magnesium and serum creatinine level between the two groups (p < 0.05). The rate of use of sertraline was significantly higher in the study group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). This pattern was not found in other SSRI/SNRI (p > 0.05). The results of our study show that SSRI/SNRI exposure, in addition to hyponatremia, may also affect the level of serum potassium, serum magnesium and serum creatinine. A history of hyponatremia and exposure to SSRI/SNRI may be potential risk factors for the development of hyponatremia. Future prospective studies are needed to validate these findings. Aim: To explore the relationship between the serum sodium level on admission and all‐cause mortality in HF patients. Design: A single‐center retrospective cohort study. Methods: Patients hospitalized with HF at the Heart Failure Center, Fuwai Hospital, from November 2008 to November 2018 were enrolled. Results: A total of 3649 patients were included, and the mean sodium level was 137.19 ± 4.36 mmol/L, with a range from 115.6 to 160.9 mmol/L. During a median follow‐up of 1101 days, mortality occurred in 1413 (38.7%) hospital survivors. After adjustment for age, sex, and other potential confounders, patients with sodium levels <135 mmol/L (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.67; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.29–2.16) and 135–137 mmol/L (HR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.01–1.78) had an increased risk of all‐cause mortality compared to those with sodium levels of 139–141 mmol/L. The aim of this study was to compare the bioequivalence and safety of test preparation sodium levofolinate injection with reference preparations of calcium levofolinate for injection and sodium folinate for injection in China. A single‐center, randomized, open‐label, 3‐period, crossover test was conducted on 24 healthy subjects. Plasma concentration of levofolinate, dextrofolinate, and their metabolites l‐5‐methyltetrahydrofolate and d‐5‐methyltetrahydrofolate were quantified by a validated chiral–liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method. All adverse events (AEs) were documented to evaluate safety as they occurred and evaluated descriptively. Pharmacokinetic parameters (maximum plasma concentration, time to maximum concentration, area under the plasma concentration–time curve over the dosing interval, area under the plasma concentration–time curve from time 0 to infinity, terminal elimination half‐life, and terminal rate constant) of 3 preparations were calculated. A total of 8 subjects (10 cases) of AEs occurred in this trial. No serious AEs or unexpected serious adverse reactions were observed. Sodium levofolinate was bioequivalent to calcium levofolinate and sodium folinate in Chinese subjects, and the 3 preparations were all well tolerated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Age and herb-drug combination are risk factors for the severity of Xiyanping injection (XYP) associated adverse events (AEs). Objective: To analyze risk factors contributing to the severity of XYP's AEs using a variable importance for projection (VIP) method. Methods: AEs related to the use of XYP were extracted from the China National Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Information System (2004–2017) and classified as general or severe. Data were analyzed with respect to age and 12 herb-drug combinations, including ribavirin (RB), ceftriaxone, penicillin sodium, ambroxol hydrochloride (AH), clindamycin, cefoxitin sodium, azithromycin (AZM), ceftazidime, amoxicillin sodium/potassium clavulanate, levofloxacin hydrochloride, sodium cefazolin pentahydrate, and acyclovir according to VIP scores and correlation coefficient (Coeff). Results: A total of 21,714 AEs (general 20,660; severe 1054) related to XYP combinations were included. Using XYP alone tended to produce general AEs (All VIP = 3.124; 1.329; 1.857; 2.169; 2.400, Coeff < 0). For all set, 0–6 years old patients tend to have general AEs (VIP = 2.425, Coeff < 0), while those > 41 years old patients tend to have severe AEs (VIP = 1.180; 2.323, Coeff > 0). For 0–40 years old patients, XYP-RB combination had a greater impact on the severity of AEs (VIP = 1.158; 1.360; 1.147, Coeff > 0). For 7–17 years old patients, XYP-AZM combination tended to produce general AEs (VIP = 1.502, Coeff < 0). In individuals > 65 years old, XYP-AH combination tended to result in severe AEs (VIP = 1.232, Coeff > 0). Conclusions: VIP method was expected to effectively analyze risk factors in affecting the severity of AEs and control AEs more effectively. Age is the key factor contributing to the severity of AEs, and there are different influence directions. It is recommended that clinicians pay closer attention to the metabolic characteristics of different age groups. To assess the relationship of sodium, potassium and the ratio of sodium to potassium (Na/K) with albuminuria, a cross-sectional study was carried out in China in 2017. Sodium, potassium and albumin excretions were examined in a 24-h (h) urine sample collected from 1486 participants. Microalbuminuria was defined as 24-h urinary albumin excretion between 30 and 300 mg/24 h. The participants had an average age of 46.2 ± 14.1 years old, and 48.9% were men. The proportion of patients with microalbuminuria was 9.0%. As illustrated by the adjusted generalized linear mixed model, sodium concentration increased significantly with the increase in 24-h urinary albumin (β = 1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.38–1.93; P = 0.003). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analyses demonstrated that the odds ratio (OR) of microalbuminuria increased with the quartiles of sodium [OR = 2.20, 95% CI 1.26–3.84 (the maximum quartile vs. the minimum quartile), Pfor trend = 0.006]. Potassium and the Na/K ratio did not have any association with outcome indicators. A high amount of sodium intake was potentially correlated with early renal function impairment. Objective: To investigate the effects of glucose-free and glucose-containing dialysates during dialysis in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients by the prospective cross-over study, and detect glucose control methods in MHD patients. Methods: A total of 66 MHD 18–75 years old patients in our hospital from Nov. 2019 to Mar. 2020 were recruited. All patients underwent HD with 4 hours per time, three times per week. Glucose-free dialysate (glucose-free group) and then 5.55 mmol/L glucose-containing dialysate (glucose-5.55 group) were used alternately in dialysis. The demographics and parameters of pre- and post-dialysis were recorded. Results: A total of 60 patients were analyzed, and 28 patients among them had type 2 diabetes. Serum glucose pre and post dialysis were 8.64 ± 4.18 mmol/L versus 5.74 ± 1.82 mmol/L (p < 0.01) in glucose-free dialysate, and 9.31 ± 4.89 mmol/L versus 7.80 ± 2.59 mmol/L (p < 0.01) in glucose-5.55 dialysate. The post-dialysis blood glucose of glucose-free group was lower than glucose-5.55 group (5.74 ± 1.82 vs 7.80 ± 2.59, p < 0.01). About 18 (30.00%) patients in glucose-free group and 1 patient (1.67%) in glucose-5.55 group whose blood glucose was lower than 4.44 mmol/L (p < 0.01). About 29 patients (48.33%) in glucose-free group and 17 patients (28.33%; p = 0.02) in glucose-5.55 group have hunger feeling. Serum sodium level in the glucose-free group was higher than that in Glucose-5.55 group (137.92 ± 1.64 vs 136.70 ± 1.64, p < 0.01). Post-dialysis blood glucose had no significant differences between patients not using diabetes-related medication (13 patients) and patients using diabetes-related medication (15 patients) in glucose-free group (7.13 ± 1.78 mmol/L vs 6.08 ± 2.84 mmol/L, p = 0.23) and glucose-5.55 group (9.22 ± 2.59 mmol/L vs 9.35 ± 2.88 mmol/L, p = 0.90). Conclusions: Glucose-free and glucose-5.55 dialysate both decrease the blood glucose post-dialysis. Dialysates containing 5.55 mmol/L glucose can reduce the incidence of hypoglycemia and lower serum sodium, but have no effect on blood pressure during dialysis. Stopping insulin and oral anti-diabetic drugs once before dialysis may not affect the control of blood glucose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a systemic metabolic disease caused by a variety of factors, osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone mass, bone tissue microstructural degradation, and decreased bone mechanical properties, accompanied by bone fragility and fracture, which is a common risk of senile disease. In China, osteoporosis has become a common disease and has frequent morbidity, with the incidence trend on the rise. Bisphosphates have received much attention in this field as inhibitory bone resorption agents, and sodium olpadronate belongs to the third-generation bisphosphonates. This experiment investigated the synthetic process and pharmacological activity of sodium olpadronate. Using 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-propionitrile as the starting material, the synthesis process was improved to reduce cost with a total yield of 49.7%, which was 24.0% higher than that reported in the literature. Pharmacodynamic experiments showed that sodium olpadronate could be used to treat osteoporosis. Moreover, toxicology experiments showed no obvious toxic side effects. Objective  Pulmonary edema is the most common pathophysiological change in pulmonary disease. Aquaporins (AQPs) and Na + /K + -ATPase play pivotal roles in alveolar fluid clearance. This study aimed to explore the influence of increased alveolar fluid on the absorption of lung fluid. Study Design  Eighty New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into eight groups (n  = 10 in each group), and models of different alveolar fluid contents were established by the infusion of different volumes of normal saline (NS) via the endotracheal tube. Five animals in each group were sacrificed immediately after infusion to determine the wet/dry ratio, while the remaining animals in each group were killed 4 hours later to determine the wet/dry ratio at 4 hours. Additionally, lung specimens were collected from each group, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), western blot, and immunohistochemical (IHC) analyses of AQPs and Na + /K + -ATPase were performed. Results  The qRT-PCR analysis and western blot studies showed markedly decreased mRNA and protein levels of AQP1 and Na + /K + -ATPase when the alveolar fluid volume was ≥6 mL/kg, and the mRNA level of AQP5 was significantly reduced when the alveolar fluid volume was ≥4 mL/kg. In addition, IHC analysis showed the same results. At 4 hours, the lung wet/dry ratio was significantly increased when the alveolar fluid volume was ≥6 mL/kg; however, compared with 0 hours after NS infusion, there was still a significant absorption of alveolar fluid for a period of 4 hours. Conclusion  The results of this study suggest that increased alveolar fluid may induce the downregulation of the mRNA and protein expression of AQPs and Na + /K + -ATPase, which appear to affect alveolar fluid clearance in rabbit lungs. Early intervention is required to avoid excessive alveolar fluid accumulation. A large amount of oily sludge is generated in the production process of oilfield, which causes serious pollution to the environment. The oil sludge from Jidong Oilfield in China was treated by microemulsion system containing sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) as surfactant. The microemulsion was prepared from n-heptane as oil phase and aqueous solution containing SDS, n-butanol and sodium chloride as water phase. A study was conducted on the effects of system composition and treatment process on the oil removal efficiency. The results showed that when the volume ratio of n-heptane to water was 1:1, and the weight content of SDS, n-butanol and sodium chloride was 2.43%, 11.82% and 3.89% respectively, the oil removal efficiency was the highest. 79.8% of the oil could be removed when the treatment amount was 10 g (in microemulsion prepared by 100mL water, the same below) under the system composition mentioned above. Background: Long-term, excessively high sodium consumption can lead to increased blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the dietary sodium intake and food sources to understand the epidemiological characteristics associated with potentially influencing variables in adults from Shanghai. Methods: Residents aged 15 years and above were randomly selected using multi-stage stratified random sampling in Shanghai. Over 3 days, family condiments were weighed for each 24-h day, and recall surveys were conducted for the same timeframe regarding sodium intake during the spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons. Results: The median sodium intake for residents aged 15 years and above was 4.3 g/d in Shanghai, where 55.1% was obtained from cooking salt, 13.2% from sodium condiments, and 22.2% from pre-packaged food. There were no significant differences in total sodium intake or main sources of sodium intake between different seasons. The sodium intake of rural residents > suburban residents > urban residents (P < 0.05). The logistic regression demonstrated that compared to the rural, the people living in urban and suburban consumed less sodium. Compared to the 18–44, the people aged 45–59 and ≥ 60 consumed more sodium (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Sodium intake is high in Shanghai. The absolute amount of cooking salt is low in Shanghai, and the possibility of further reduction is very little under the existing dietary habit. To understand the association between sodium and potassium consumption levels, hypertension and knowledge, attitudes and behaviors (KAB) toward salt and the commitment to effective sodium reduction and potassium supplementation to achieve the purpose of suppressing hypertension. A stratified multistage random sampling method was used to obtain a representative provincial sample of 7512 residents aged 18–69 years through a cross-sectional survey by the Salt Reduction and Hypertension Prevention Project (SRHPP) in Zhejiang Province of China in 2017–2018. A screening including demographic, anthropometric, salt-related KAB and physical measurements was implemented, and 24-h urine of approximately 1/5 of the participants was collected and tested. The mean age was 44.8 years, 50.1% were women, 44.0% lived in urban areas, and hypertension or prehypertension accounted for approximately 35.0%. The mean 24-h urinary sodium and potassium excretion were 3848.5 (1661.1) mg/d and 1491.1 (710.9) mg/d, respectively. KAB in urban areas was generally more favorable than in rural areas, women were better than men, and the optimal blood pressure group was better than the other two groups (P < 0.05). However, the awareness and correct use rate of salt-restricted spoons, low-sodium salt and nutrition labeling were lower. A multivariable linear regression model indicated that KAB had a smaller effect on sodium (two indicators effective for promoting sodium reduction) and a greater effect on potassium (six indicators effective for promoting potassium supplementation) and mainly focused on knowledge and behavior indicators. A multivariable logistic regression model indicated that mastering more knowledge and taking active measures could effectively reduce the transition to hypertension, even if the individual was already in prehypertension. There is much room for improvement of salt-related KAB in the Chinese population. A clear association indicates that KAB can help to reduce sodium and supplement potassium, especially potassium, and help to suppress the development of hypertension. The role of beliefs in KAB should be fully valued and improved, similar to knowledge and behaviors. Multiple synthetic beacons are required for atmospheric-turbulence compensation in an extended-field-of-view multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) telescope. In this paper, we report on the first successful implementation of a microsecond-pulse sodium guidestars constellation laser system, based on a small angle precise polarized combining and splitting technology. At Lijiang Observatory of China, four-ways ∼20 W yellow laser beam with kHz repetition-rate and hundred- μ s pulse width were projected into the sky through one small-aperture launching telescope, and generated a distinctive four-point grouping on a field of view of 40″ with variable configurations of linear, parallelogram, rhomboid and square. The sodium return signal could easily avoid Rayleigh light interference by the pulse synchro controlling technology delivering a higher spatial resolution. Moreover, the increase in return photons for alternated circularly and alternated linearly polarized light has been investigated. The study was designed to explore whether 24-hour urinary sodium excretion could predict the therapeutic effectiveness of oral rehydration saline in pediatric cases of vasovagal syncope. Eighty children suffering from vasovagal syncope with oral rehydration saline treatment in Department of Pediatrics, Peking University First Hospital, China, were recruited into the study. They were followed up for 3 (2, 3) months after treatment. Pre-treatment demographic, clinical, head-up tilt test-based hemodynamic and laboratory variables were compared between responders and non-responders. After univariate analysis, variables with p value < 0.05 in the comparison between responders and non-responders were further analyzed by binary logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was conducted to assess the value in predicting effectiveness of oral rehydration saline treatment. The results showed that 33 cases were responders, and 47 were non-responders. Blood sodium (138 ± 2 mmol/L vs. 139 ± 2 mmol/L, p < 0.05) and pre-treatment 24-hour urinary sodium excretion (74 ± 29 mmol/24 h vs. 109 (93, 141) mmol/24 h, p < 0.001) were lower in responders than in non-responders. The baseline 24-hour urinary sodium excretion was positively correlated to the duration from tilting to the positive response appearance in head-up tilt test (r = 0.289, p < 0.01). The cut-off value of baseline 24-hour urinary sodium excretion of the therapeutic effectiveness of oral rehydration saline on vasovagal syncope cases was 83 mmol/24 h, yielding a sensitivity of 87% and a specificity of 73% with AUC of 0.842 (p < 0.001). In conclusion, 24-hour urinary sodium excretion could be a useful biomarker to predict the therapeutic response to oral rehydration saline in pediatric cases of vasovagal syncope. A zinc smelter in northwestern China obtains sulfur products and hot filter residues after wet smelting and flotation processes. The hot filter residue is smelting solid waste produced by leaching, which is rich in valuable metals such as zinc, gold and iron, and elemental sulfur is the main component, with a content of about 52%. Treating the hot filter residue by alkali leaching can reduce the sulfur content in the hot filter residue, and the generated sodium sulfide combines with other metal elements in the hot filter residue to form sulfide salts, thereby achieving the enrichment of valuable metal elements in the residue and reducing solid waste emissions. The process provides a feasible technical route in terms of economic benefits, process technology, etc., which can realize the efficient enrichment of valuable metals and produce high-performance product sodium sulfide. The sodium sulfide product was used for the coppet-molybdenum separation test and compared with industrial sodium sulfide. The coppermolybdenum separation tost was carried out with the sodium sulfide obtained by high-alkali multiple leaching, and the separation index was excellent, and the separation effect was basically the same as that of industrial sodium sulfide. Soil and tobacco mineral compositions undergo diverse and complex reactions to the application of potassium sulfate fertilizer, the primary fertilizer utilized in Chinese tobacco cultivation. To investigate these reactions, we conducted an 8-year field experiment in Shandong province, a major tobacco production region in China. Different levels of potassium sulfate were applied, including non-fertilized CK, low T1 (compound fertilizer of potassium sulfate with 15%N, 15%P 2 O 5 , 15%K 2 O, and 12%S on a weight of 550 kg ha−1), medium T2 (potassium sulfate fertilizer with 50% K 2 O and 18% S on a weight of 165 kg ha−1 added to the T1), and excessive T3 treatments (potassium sulfate fertilizer with 50% K 2 O and 18% S on a weight of 330 kg ha−1 added to the T1). The study measured soil exchangeable minerals and tissue total minerals in root, stem, and leaf, encompassing potassium (K), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), and sulfate (S). The findings indicated significant increases in soil exchangeable K and available S contents in T2 and T3, with T3 exhibiting the highest increments (274% and 616% compared to CK). Tissue K and S content showed significant increases in T1, T2, and T3, particularly in roots. Conversely, tissue Ca and Mg exhibited a similar increasing trend in T1 and T2 but decrease in T3, especially in stems and leaves. Tissue Na increased in roots of 22% but decreased in stems of − 17% and leaves of − 0.05% when collectively considering T1, T2, and T3. Notably, tissue Al content remained unaltered by potassium sulfate application. Correlation analysis revealed that tissue K and S increased rapidly with soil exchangeable K and available S at low levels but slowed down as soil mineral contents rise. Tissue Ca, Na, and Mg initially increased with corresponding soil contents but decreased when soil content reaches extreme levels. Tissue Al, however, showed a significant decrease with soil exchangeable Al. Tobacco biomass significantly increased in T1 and T2 and displayed improvement, though not statistically significant, in T3 compared to CK. Path analysis identified soil Ca and Mg as pivotal factors influencing tobacco dry matter accumulation through tissue mineral compositions. Background: Sodium intake in China is extremely high and eating in restaurants is increasingly popular. Little research has explored the sodium level of restaurant dishes. The present study aims to assess the content and sources of sodium in Chinese restaurants.Methods: Cross-sectional data were obtained from the baseline survey of the Restaurant-based Intervention Study (RIS) in 2019. A total of 8131 best-selling restaurant dishes with detailed recipes from 192 restaurants in China were included. Sodium content per 100 g and per serving were calculated according to the Chinese Food Composition Table. The proportion of restaurant dishes exceeding the daily sodium reference intake level in a single serving and the major sources of sodium were determined.Results: Median sodium content in restaurant dishes were 487.3 mg per 100 g, 3.4 mg per kcal, and 2543.7 mg per serving. For a single serving, 74.9% of the dishes exceeded the Chinese adults' daily adequate intake for sodium (AI, 1500 mg per day), and 62.6% of dishes exceeded the proposed intake for preventing non-communicable chronic diseases (PI, 2000 mg per day). Cooking salt was the leading source of sodium in Chinese restaurant dishes (45.8%), followed by monosodium glutamate (17.5%), food ingredients (17.1%), soy sauce (9.4%), and other condiments/seasonings (10.2%). More types of salted condiments/seasonings use were related to higher sodium level.Conclusions: The sodium levels in Chinese restaurant dishes are extremely high and variable. In addition to cooking salt, other salted condiments/seasonings also contribute a large proportion of sodium. The National Medical Products Administration has authorized sodium oligomannate for treating mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. In this study, an LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated to quantitate sodium oligomannate in different biomatrices. The plasma pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and excretion of sodium oligomannate in Sprague-Dawley rats and beagle dogs were systematically investigated. Despite its complicated structural composition, the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion profiles of the oligosaccharides in sodium oligomannate of different sizes and terminal derivatives were indiscriminate. Sodium oligomannate mainly crossed the gastrointestinal epithelium through paracellular transport following oral administration, with very low oral bioavailability in rats (0.6%–1.6%) and dogs (4.5%–9.3%). Absorbed sodium oligomannate mainly resided in circulating body fluids in free form with minimal distribution into erythrocytes and major tissues. Sodium oligomannate could penetrate the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier of rats, showing a constant area under the concentration-time curve ratio (CSF/plasma) of approximately 5%. The cumulative urinary excretion of sodium oligomannate was commensurate with its oral bioavailability, supporting that excretion was predominantly renal, whereas no obvious biliary secretion was observed following a single oral dose to bile duct-cannulated rats. Moreover, only 33.7% (male) and 26.3% (female) of the oral dose were recovered in the rat excreta within 96 h following a single oral administration, suggesting that the intestinal flora may have ingested a portion of unabsorbed sodium oligomannate as a nutrient. Objective: This study aims to investigate the incidence, occurrence timing and locations of preoperative DVT and identify the associated factors in this group. Methods: A retrospective analysis of collected data in young and middle-aged (18–59 years) patients who presented with hip fracture between October 2015 and December 2018 was conducted. Before operation, patients were routinely examined for DVT by Duplex ultrasonography (DUS). Electronic medical records were retrieved to collect the data, involving demographics, comorbidities, injury and laboratory biomarkers after admission. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors that were independently associated with DVT. Results: Eight hundred and fifty-seven patients were included, and 51 (6.0%) were diagnosed with preoperative DVT, with 2.5% for proximal DVT. The average age of patients with DVT is 48.7 ± 9.4 year, while that of patients without DVT is 45.0 ± 10.9 year. The mean time from injury to diagnosis of DVT was 6.8 ± 5.5 days, 43.1% cases occurring at day 2–4 after injury. Among 51 patients with DVT, 97 thrombi were found. Most patients had thrombi at injured extremity (72.5%), 19.6% at uninjured and 7.8% at bilateral extremities. There are significantly difference between patients with DVT and patients without DVT in term of prevalence of total protein (41.2% vs 24.4%, P = 0.008), albumin (54.9% vs 25.6%, P = 0.001), low lactate dehydrogenase (51.0% vs 30.3%, P = 0.002), lower serum sodium concentration (60.8% vs 29.9%, P = 0.001), lower RBC count (68.6% vs 37.0%, P = 0.001), lower HGB (51.0% vs 35.1%, P = 0.022), higher HCT (86.3% vs 35.1%, P = 0.022) and higher platelet count (37.3% vs 11.3%, P = 0.001). The multivariate analyses showed increasing age in year (OR 1.04, 95% CI; P = 0.020), delay to DUS (OR, 1.26; P = 0.001), abnormal LDH (OR, 1.45; P = 0.026), lower serum sodium concentration (OR, 2.56; P = 0.007), and higher HCT level (OR, 4.11; P = 0.003) were independently associated with DVT. In the oil production process, a large amount of generated oily sludge causes considerable pollution to the environment. In this paper, the oil sludge samples obtained from the Jidong oilfield in China are treated by the microemulsion system containing sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a surfactant. The microemulsion system contains kerosene as the oil phase and an aqueous solution containing SDBS, n-butanol, and sodium chloride as the water phase. This study is focused on the effects of the system's composition and treatment process on the efficiency of oil removal. The results show that when the volume ratio of kerosene to water is 1:1 and the weight concentrations of SDBS, n-butanol, and sodium chloride are 4.92%, 2.59%, and 3.94% respectively, the system provides the highest oil removal efficiency. When the initial sample mass is 10 g and the water content in the microemulsion is 100 mL, the treatment provides the removal of 79.3% of oil from the sludge. Background & aims: Previous evidence varied on the relationship of dietary sodium, potassium, sodium/potassium, and salt with cognitive function. This study aimed to explore the associations of sodium, potassium, sodium/potassium, and salt intakes with cognitive function among the elderly in China. Methods: Data were accessed from the database of the 1997e2006 China Health and Nutrition Survey, including 4213 participants aged at least 50 years at baseline. Dietary data at individual and household levels were collected using the method of 24-h dietary recall in three consecutive days. Cognitive function was measured through objective and subjective methods. Linear regression models and multinomial logistic regression models were established to elucidate the association of dietary sodium, potassium, sodium/potassium, and salt with cognitive function. Mediation effect analysis and substitution analysis were also conducted. Results: Higher potassium intakes in Q3 (Median: 1653.3 g/day, β = 1.366, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.845 to 1.887) and Q4 (Median: 2181.4 g/day, β = 1.454, 95% CI: 0.865 to 2.044) were significantly associated with higher cognitive test score compared with Q1 (Median: 1053.7 g/day). Sodium/potassium intake in Q3 (Median: 3.8, β = -0.791, 95% CI: -1.264 to -0.317) and Q4 (Median: 5.5, β = -0.909, 95% CI: -1.401 to -0.417) were inversely associated with the cognitive test score compared with Q1 (Median: 2.0). Higher dietary sodium and sodium/potassium intakes were associated with a higher risk of a selfreported poor and deteriorated memory during the past 12 months. Additionally, higher potassium intakes were significantly associated with a lower risk of deteriorated memory. The associations of dietary potassium and sodium/potassium were mediated by CCVD, and average cognitive test score increased by about 1 point after replacing 1000 mg/day of sodium with an equal intake of potassium. Conclusions: Restricting sodium and increasing potassium, and keeping the balance of dietary sodium and potassium are encouraged to prevent cognitive decline and dementia in the elderly. COVID-19 was detected in China in December 2019. The rapid dissemination and novelty of the disease resulted in an epidemic. This study aimed to identify biochemical parameters at admission that can be used to categorize severity and outcome of COVID −19 infection. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Allied Hospitals of RMU from April 2020 to July 2020. It included 128 randomly selected confirmed COVID-19 patients. At admission, biochemical profile (total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferases {ALT}, aspartate aminotransferases {AST}, urea, creatinine, uric acid, sodium, potassium, and chloride were correlated with severity and outcome of COVID-19 by employing t-tests and ANOVA where required. Cut-off values to predict disease severity and outcome were calculated using ROC curve. The study comprised 46.1% non-severe, 29.7% severe, and 24.2% critical COVID-19 patients. 84.4% patients improved and 15.6% expired. Urea was increased in critical disease patients (p < 0.000). Higher ALT (p 0.030) and AST (p 0.004) levels were noted in severe and critical disease. Sodium (p 0.001) and chloride (p 0.026) were decreased in critical disease. Patients who expired had increased urea (p 0.000), ALT (p 0.040) and AST (p 0.002). At admission, urea >42.7 mg (sensitivity of 64.7%, specificity of 87.5%), AST >43.5 IU/L (64% sensitivity, 60% specificity), and sodium <136.9 mmol/L (sensitivity of 70.6%, specificity of 71.2%) predicted critical COVID-19 infection. Vegetation restoration in deserts is challenging due to these ecosystems' inherent fragility and harsh environmental conditions. One approach for active restoration involves planting native species, which can accelerate the recovery of ecosystem functions. To ensure the effectiveness of this process, carefully selecting species for planting is crucial. Generally, it is expected that a more diverse mix of species in the plantation will lead to the recovery of a greater number of ecosystem functions, especially when the selected species have complementary niche traits that facilitate maximum cooperation and minimize competition among them. In this study, we evaluated the planting of two native species from the hyper-desert of Taklamakan, China, which exhibit marked morpho-physiological differences: a phreatophytic legume (Alhagi sparsifolia) and a halophytic non-legume (Karelinia caspia). These species were grown in both monoculture and intercrop communities. Monoculture of the legume resulted in the highest biomass accumulation. Intercropping improved several ecosystem functions in the 50 cm-upper soil, particularly those related to phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and sulfur (S) concentrations, as well as soil enzyme activities. However, it also increased soil sodium (Na + ) concentration and pH. Halophyte monocultures enhanced ecological functions associated with nitrogen concentrations in the upper soil and with P, S, C, and cation concentrations (K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Zn 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ ), along with enzyme activities in the deep soil. It also maximized Na + accumulation in plant biomass. In summary, we recommend legume monoculture when the primary goal is to optimize biomass accumulation. Conversely, halophyte monoculture is advisable when the objective is to extract sodium from the soil or enhance ecosystem functions in the deep soil. Intercropping the two species is recommended to maximize the ecosystem functions of the upper soil, provided there is no salinization risk. When planning restoration efforts in desert regions, it is essential to understand the impact of each species on ecosystem function and how complementary species behave when intercropped. Background High salt intake is a known risk factor of hypertension, which in turn increases the risk of stroke and cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a method for predicting 24-hour urinary sodium excretion (UNa24h) using casual urine specimens in Chinese hypertensive patients. Methods A total of 966 patients with hypertension were included from 8 provinces across China. A UNa24h prediction model (Sun_C method) was developed for males and females using linear regression based on age, weight, sodium concentration in the spot urine (UNaspot), and creatinine concentration in the spot urine (UCrspot). The data were split into the training (70%) and testing (30%) sets to, respectively, develop and evaluate the Sun_C method. Results Compared with the Kawasaki, INTERSALT, and Tanaka methods, Sun_C method achieved a low and consistent mean bias (1.1 mmol/d) within the range from 106 to 212 mmol/d of UNa24h (equivalent to NaCl intake of 6–12 g/d). In addition, the Sun_C method showed no significant difference between the measured and estimated UNa24h in a paired t -test (P = 0.689). At individual level, Sun_C method had 79.8% of individuals at the cutoff under ±30% level. Conclusions Sun_C method may prove a reasonable method to estimate the daily dietary sodium intakes (particularly in the range of 6–12 g/d of NaCl) in Chinese hypertensive patients using spot urine measurements. Objective: This study examined Na intake and identified the major food sources of Na in healthy Chinese adults aged ≥50 years in Hong Kong.Design: Participants who completed a baseline assessment of a randomised controlled trial assessing the effectiveness of exercise and nutrition supplementation on improving physical and cognitive functions were included. A single 24-h urine sample and a 3-d diet record were used to measure urinary Na excretion and dietary intake, respectively. The compliances to the WHO (<5 g/d) and China Nutrition Society (<6 g/d) recommendations for salt intake were assessed based on the urinary Na excretion. The relative contribution of sixteen food groups to the dietary Na intake was expressed as percentages. Associations between food groups and urinary Na excretion were analysed using multiple linear regression.Setting: Community facilities.Participants: Totally, 114 healthy Chinese adults (mean age 60·6 years, 55 % women).Results: The mean urinary Na excretion over 24-h was 2876·6 ± 1249·4 mg/d (7·3 ± 3·2 g salt/d). Overall, 22·8 % of participants met the WHO recommendation and 34·2 % met the Chinese Nutrition Society recommendation for salt intake. The major food sources of dietary Na intake were condiments (42·4 %), cereals and their products (16·8 %) and soups (13·5 %). Higher intakes of seafood and nuts were associated with lower urinary Na excretion.Conclusions: Public health strategies should target healthy Chinese adults in Hong Kong to modify the current patterns of Na intake. Background: New therapies are urgently needed for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Sodium oligomannate (GV-971) is a marine-derived oligosaccharide with a novel proposed mechanism of action. The first phase 3 clinical trial of GV-971 has been completed in China. Methods: We conducted a phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in participants with mild-to-moderate AD to assess GV-971 efficacy and safety. Participants were randomized to placebo or GV-971 (900 mg) for 36 weeks. The primary outcome was the drug-placebo difference in change from baseline on the 12-item cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog12). Secondary endpoints were drug-placebo differences on the Clinician's Interview-Based Impression of Change with caregiver input (CIBIC+), Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL) scale, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Safety and tolerability were monitored. Results: A total of 818 participants were randomized: 408 to GV-971 and 410 to placebo. A significant drug-placebo difference on the ADAS-Cog12 favoring GV-971 was present at each measurement time point, measurable at the week 4 visit and continuing throughout the trial. The difference between the groups in change from baseline was − 2.15 points (95% confidence interval, − 3.07 to − 1.23; p < 0.0001; effect size 0.531) after 36 weeks of treatment. Treatment-emergent adverse event incidence was comparable between active treatment and placebo (73.9%, 75.4%). Two deaths determined to be unrelated to drug effects occurred in the GV-971 group. Conclusions: GV-971 demonstrated significant efficacy in improving cognition with sustained improvement across all observation periods of a 36-week trial. GV-971 was safe and well-tolerated. Background: There is still lack of data on deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following bone trauma. This study aimed to determine the epidemiologic characteristics of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of lower extremities following tibial plateau fractures. Methods: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on patients presenting with tibial plateau fractures between October 2014 and December 2018 was conducted. Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) was routinely used to screen for preoperative DVT of bilateral lower extremities. Data on demographics, comorbidities, injury-related data, and laboratory biomarkers at admission were collected. Univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify the independent risk factors associated with DVT. Results: A total of 1179 patients were included, among whom 192 (16.3%) had a preoperative DVT, with incidence rate of 1.0% for proximal and 15.3% for distal DVT. The average interval between fracture occurrence and diagnosis of DVT was 3.5 days (median, 2 days), ranging from 0 to 19 days. DVT involved the injured extremity in 166 (86.4%) patients, both the injured and uninjured extremities in 14 patients (7.3%) and only the uninjured extremity in 12 patients (6.3%). Six risk factors were identified to be associated with DVT, including gender (male vs female), hypertension, open fracture, alkaline phosphatase > 100 u/L, sodium concentration < 135 mmol/L, and D-dimer > 0.5 mg/L. Background: The epidemiology of Kawasaki disease (KD) suggests that an infectious agentmaybe a potential disease trigger in susceptible children. Several studies have shown that the cause of KD may be associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infection. Objectives:We aimed to investigate the relationship between M. pneumoniae infection and coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) in children with KD in China. Methods: From January 2015 to December 2018, a total of 330 children with KD met the inclusion criteria. Relevant data were extracted and analysed. Results: The children were stratified into two groups according to M. pneumoniae infection status. Significant differences were identified in the proportion of patients with fever > 10 days, the occurrence of small CAA, and the average serum sodium, prealbumin (PA), and albumin levels but not in the occurrence of medium and giant CAA between the two groups. According to binary logistic regression, M. pneumoniae infection (OR: 0.515; 95% CI: 0.309 - 0.860; P = 0.011), serum sodium levels (OR: 0.910; 95% CI: 0.851 - 0.972; P =0.005), and PA (OR: 0.900; 95% CI: 0.854 - 0.949; P≤ 0.001) levels were independently associated with occurrence of small CAA. Conclusions: We demonstrated that M. pneumoniae infection, serum sodium and PA levels are inversely related to the occurrence of small CAA. These results suggest that M. pneumoniae infection may be associated with a decreased incidence of small CAA. Further large-sample studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Dietary salt intake may vary depending on different lifestyles. We aimed to estimate the different salt intakes and evaluate the knowledge and self-awareness about salt among people speaking the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects in the Chaoshan region of southern China.Design: The study followed a cluster sampling of residents in Chaoshan region. General characteristics, lifestyles, health status as well as knowledge and self-awareness related to salt intake were investigated using a questionnaire. Anthropometric variables as well as Na and K excretion in a 24-h urine collection were measured.Setting: Chaoshan region of China.Participants: Four hundred fifteen adults who spoke only one of these three dialects.Results: The salt intake of adults who spoke the Teochew, Teochew-Hakka and Hakka dialects was 7·19 (interquartile range (IQR) 5·29-10·17), 9·03 (IQR 6·62-11·54) and 10·12 (IQR 7·61-12·82) g/d, respectively, with significant differences between Teochew and Teochew-Hakka speakers and between Teochew and Hakka speakers (both P < 0·05). The Na:K ratio for adults who spoke the three dialects was 3·00 (IQR 2·00-4·11), 3·50 (IQR 2·64-4·82) and 4·52 (IQR 3·35-5·97), respectively, and differed significantly among the groups (all P < 0·05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed increased Na:K ratio associated with hypertension (β = 0·71, P = 0·043) in Hakka speakers. Knowledge and self-awareness about salt intake were poor in this population.Conclusions: Salt intake was closely related to lifestyles and was higher than the upper limit (5 g/d) recommended by the WHO in adults of Chaoshan, especially those speaking the Hakka dialect. Background: The research on plant salt tolerance has mainly focused on Na+, but Cl− has been relatively neglected. Previous studies have found that the xerophyte Pugionium cornutum, an important forage grass in the arid and semi‐arid regions of northwestern China, could synergistically accumulate high quintiles of Na+ and Cl− in its shoots under NaCl treatments. However, the separate effects of these ions on the adaptation of P. cornutum to saline conditions have not been investigated. Aims: In this study, the response of P. cornutum to Na+ and Cl− was analyzed. Methods: Four‐week‐old seedlings were treated with additional 50 mM NaCl, Na+‐specific solution containing 50 mM Na+ with a mix of NO3-, H2PO4-, and SO42- as counter anions, and Cl−‐specific solution containing 50 mM Cl− with a mix of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ as counter cations. Results: Compared with the normal growth condition irrigated with Hoagland solution, the Na+‐specific solution severely impaired the growth and photosynthesis of P. cornutum due to the high accumulation of Na+ in shoots and the deterioration of tissue K+ homeostasis; while the Cl−‐specific solution significantly increased shoot fresh and dry biomass. The Cl−‐specific solution could also increase the turgor pressure in leaves for enhancing osmotic adjustment, which should be mainly attributed to the large accumulation of Cl−, since the concentrations of other ions, including K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, H2PO4-, and SO42-, in tissues under Cl−‐specific treatment were maintained at the same levels as those observed under the normal condition. Conclusions: P. cornutum displays an excellent tolerance to moderate Cl− but not to Na+, and the large accumulation of Cl− should play a positive role in stimulating the growth of P. cornutum under salt stress. Objective: To determine the appropriateness of three widely used formulas estimating 24-h urinary Na (24hUNa) from spot urine samples in the Chinese population., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Setting: Literature review was conducted to identify studies for estimating 24hUNa using the Kawasaki, Tanaka and INTERSALT formulas simultaneously in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane library databases. The mean difference (MD) and correlation coefficients (r) between measures and estimates from different formulas were assessed., Participants: Information extraction and quality assessment were performed in thirteen studies involving 8369 subjects., Results: Two studies which affected the overall robustness were excluded in the 'leave-one-out' sensitivity analyses. Within the final meta-analysis included eleven studies and 7197 participants, 36·07 mmol/d (95 %CI 16·89, 55·25) of MD was observed in the Kawasaki formula, and -19·62 mmol/d (95 %CI -37·37, -1·87) in the Tanaka formula and -35·78 mmol/d (95 %CI -50·76, -20·80) in the INTERSALT formula; a pooled r-Fisher's Z of 0·39 (95 %CI 0·32, 0·45) in the Kawasaki formula, 0·43 (95 %CI 0·37, 0·49) in the Tanaka formula and 0·36 (95 %CI 0·31, 0·42) in the INTERSALT formula. Subgroup analyses were conducted to explore the possible factors affecting the accuracy of the formula estimation from three mainly aspects: population types, Na intake levels and urine specimen types., Conclusions: The meta-analysis suggested that the Tanaka formula performed a more accurate estimate in Chinese population. Time of collecting spot urine specimens and Na intake level of the sample population might be the main factors affecting the accuracy of the formula estimation.

There is limited information on the knowledge and practice of salt-reduction in China. The purpose of this study was to describe the status of the knowledge and practice of salt-reduction among the Chinese population from a nationally representative survey stratified according to hypertension status. The association between hypertensive status and salt-reduction knowledge and practice was calculated using multivariate hierarchical logistic regression adjusting for related confounders. The study included 179,834 participants; 51.7% were women, and the mean age was 44 years. The levels of overall salt-reduction knowledge (7.9%) and practice (37.1%) were low. The percentage of the use of salt-control spoons and low-sodium salt was 10.7% and 12.2%. The aging population (≥60 years) had the lowest levels of salt-reduction knowledge (5.7%) than other age groups (P < 0.0001). People living in rural areas (OR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.51, 0.81) had lower odds of using salt-control spoons. Females (OR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.36) had higher odds of using salt-control spoons. People living in rural areas (OR = 0.48; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.63) had lower odds of using low-sodium salt. Females (OR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.41) and people living in the southern region (OR = 1.43; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.83) had higher odds of using low-sodium salt. Our work highlights the need to promote education related to hypertension, salt-reduction knowledge and methods among the public and the need to strengthen strategies for the popularization of salt-reduction knowledge and practices among males, people living in rural areas, people living in the northern region and the aging population in China., (© 2023. Background: High-sodium intake is one of the most important risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular disease, yet reliable national estimates of sodium intake in Chinese adults have not been reported., Objectives: We estimated 24-h urinary sodium and potassium excretion and population daily sodium and potassium intake of Chinese adults for the first time at a national level., Methods: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect 24-h urine specimens from Chinese adults aged ≥18 y as part of the China National Nutrition Survey 2015. Finally, 10,114 participants (4932 males and 5182 females) with complete 24-h urine specimens were included in the analysis. Estimates of mean urinary electrolyte excretion and demographic, socioeconomic, and health characteristics were used with weighted coefficients that accounted for sample selection probabilities, poststratification weighting, and nonresponse rates., Results: The estimation of overall weighted mean 24-h urinary sodium excretion was 4121 mg (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3993, 4250), 4155 mg (95% CI: 3993, 4317) in males and 4081 mg (95% CI: 3953, 4209) in females (P for sex difference = 0.36). Overall mean 24-h urinary potassium excretion was 1534 mg (95% CI: 1492, 1577), 1468 mg (95% CI: 1424, 1513) in males and 1614 mg (95% CI: 1569-1660) in females (P for sex difference <0.001). Mean 24-h urinary sodium excretion was significantly higher in rural adults (4350 mg; 95% CI: 4217, 4483) than in urban residents (3909 mg; 95% CI: 3739, 4080; P < 0.001), and in northern residents (4388 mg; 95% CI: 4237, 4539) than in southern residents (3998 mg; 95% CI: 3832, 4163; P = 0.002)., Conclusions: The first nationwide survey with 24-h urine collection confirmed that mean sodium intake in Chinese adults was more than twice the upper limit, whereas mean potassium intake was <60% of the lower limit, recommended by the World Health Organization. Background: Brozopentyl Sodium (BZP), a novel agent for ischemic stroke, has shown promising results in preclinical pharmacological studies, prompting the initiation of the first-in-human investigation., Purpose: This study aimed to assess the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of BZP in Chinese healthy volunteers., Methods: The study consisted of two parts. Part I was a single-center, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, single-ascending study with six BZP dose cohorts (SAD: 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg). Part II was a single-center, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, multi-dose- and dose-elevated study with three BZP dose cohorts (MAD: 50, 100, and 200 mg). Doses were administered once daily on days 1 and 7 and twice daily on days 2-6. The PK properties of BZP and its bioactive metabolites, BNBP, were assessed. Safety and tolerability evaluations were also conducted., Results: In the SAD study, BZP reached peak plasma concentrations (T max ) at the end of administration, with median T max values ranging from 1 to 1.03 h, while BNBP reached T max between 1.25 to 1.38 h. The terminal half-lives (T 1/2 ) were approximately 8 h for BZP and 15 h for BNBP. In the MAD study, steady-state plasma concentrations of BZP were reached by day 5. There was minimal accumulation of both BZP and BNBP after 7 days of administration. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve from 0 to time of the last measurable concentration (AUC 0-t ) and maximum plasma drug concentration (C max ) showed dose-proportional increases for BZP but not for BNBP in both study parts. Single and multiple doses of BZP demonstrated a good safety profile and were well-tolerated., Conclusion: BZP displayed safety, good tolerability and predictable PK characteristics following both single and multiple ascending intravenous administrations. Dietary sodium and potassium intakes are well-known risk factors for cardiovascular outcomes. However, the associations between dietary sodium and potassium and diabetes are still controversial. Our study aimed to examine whether dietary sodium, potassium and the sodium–potassium ratio are associated with the risk of diabetes, based on a large sample of Chinese adults. The study data were from the 2004–2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), and 5867 participants were eligible for analysis. Sodium and potassium intakes were estimated based on three consecutive 24-h recalls at an individual level combined with a food inventory at a household level performed over the same 3-day period. Diabetes was defined as fasting glucose ≥ 7.0 mmol/L (≥ 126 mg/dL), HbA 1c ≥ 6.5% or use of antidiabetic drugs. Over a mean follow-up of 4.7 years, there were 611 (10.4%) incident cases of diabetes. Participants in the higher quartiles (Q3 and Q4) of sodium intake had significantly higher risks of diabetes than those with the lowest sodium intake [Q3, RR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.06–1.86 and Q4, RR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02–1.80; P < 0.001 for trend]. In addition, high sodium intakes were significantly associated with levels of fasting glucose and HbA 1c (P < 0.05 for trend), with similar associations also found with sodium–potassium ratios (P < 0.05 for trend), but not for potassium intakes. This study found that higher sodium intakes and sodium–potassium ratios were significantly associated with a higher risk of diabetes. Purpose: To analyze the effect of preoperative serum sodium and hemoglobin on oncologic outcomes in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) based on a multi-center cohort from China and the United States (U.S.). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 775 patients with UTUC treated surgically at tertiary care medical facilities in China or the US from 1998 to 2015. We analyzed associations of preoperative serum sodium and hemoglobin with clinicopathological characteristics, overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and intravesical recurrence free survival (IVRFS). Results: The US patients had comparatively lower serum sodium and similar hemoglobin at baseline. Preoperative low serum sodium value was associated with tumor multifocality, lymph node metastasis (LNM) and lymphovascular invasion (LVI); preoperative anemia was associated with advanced age, tumor multifocality, high tumor grade and LVI. Preoperative low serum sodium was an independent predictor of worse OS in the entire cohort; preoperative anemia was an independent predictor of worse OS and CSS in the US cohort alone, Chinese cohort alone and the combined cohort. We developed a predictive nomogram for OS which exhibited better prognostic value when it included the values of sodium and anemia, and successfully validated it in different cohorts. Conclusion: Preoperative low serum sodium and anemia could be informative in predicting worse pathologic and survival outcomes in different UTUC patient ethnic groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
