Background: Medication adherence is essential for chronic disease management among older adults. Previous studies have shown significant links among social isolation, social support, loneliness, and medication adherence, yet most were based on cross-sectional designs., Purpose: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study among Chinese older adults with chronic diseases to explore the mediating effects of social support and loneliness in the association between social isolation and medication adherence., Methods: This study followed a cohort of 797 older adults with chronic diseases in China from 2022 to 2023. The serial mediation model was examined via bootstrapping techniques to evaluate the mediating effect of social support and loneliness in the association between social isolation and medication adherence., Results: From baseline to follow-up, there were significant decreases in social support (from 26.6 ± 6.2 to 23.5 ± 6.7) and medication adherence (from 6.7 ± 1.2 to 6.0 ± 1.5) and significant increases in social isolation (from 1.8 ± 1.3 to 2.5 ± 1.4) and loneliness (13.2 ± 4.1 to 23.5 ± 6.7), all with p < .001. A serial mediation model was confirmed, where social support and loneliness serially and partially mediated the association between social isolation and medication adherence (total effect c = -0.216, 95% CI = -0.296 to -0.136; direct effect c' = -0.094, 95% CI = -0.171 to -0.017; total indirect effect ab = -0.122, 95% CI = -0.179 to -0.070)., Conclusions: Our findings yield critical insights into the relationship between social isolation and medication adherence through various mediating mechanisms. Background: In this study, we explored the relationship between social isolation, loneliness, and functional impairment in 50-year-old participants, by sex., Methods: Using longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2018 and 2020), 6,524 participants meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed. A cross-lag model was established to explore the associations between social isolation, loneliness, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental ADL (IADL) disability over time, with results stratified by sex., Results: Social isolation was not significantly associated with ADL and IADL disability, but loneliness was. Autoregressive associations indicated that social isolation, loneliness, and functional disability in 2018 predicted their exacerbations in 2020 (p < 0.001). Cross-lag analysis showed that the time-lagged effect of loneliness on ADL disability was greater in women (β = 0.27) than in men (β = 0.06); the time-lagged effect of ADL disability on loneliness was greater in men (β = 0.16) than in women (β = 0.05). The bidirectional time-lagged effects of loneliness and IADL disability showed opposite patterns between the sexes., Conclusion: Functional disability in China was significantly associated with loneliness but not with social isolation. Sex differences were observed in the time-lagged effect of loneliness on functional disability. It has been 3 years since the first appearance of COVID-19 in China. During this time, social isolation was widely used as an important method to fight it. However, this measure had many negative effects on the mental health of college students. To better understand this issue, this study aims to explore the impact of social isolation and COVID-19-related stress on psychological distress among Chinese college students. Additionally, resilience has been evaluated as a key component of stress resistance in this situation. Coronavirus Stress Measure (CSM), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) were used in this study. A total of 388 Chinese college students participated in the survey via the Internet. Two groups (isolated group vs. non-isolated group) were divided according to whether they have been isolated from their classmates and families. Data analysis adopts t-test, F test and mediate effect analysis by SPSS21.0. (1) All factors, except resilience, were found to have lower scores in the isolated group; (2) significant correlations were found between all factors; (3) resilience partially mitigated the impact of COVID-19 stress on psychological symptoms. Social isolation has been found to be a significant factor contributing to negative psychological distress in Chinese college students. The COVID-19-related stress may increase the likelihood of psychological suffering among isolated group. Resilience can help reduce the negative effects of COVID-19 stress on college students. Therefore, providing appropriate psychological support tailored to different isolation situations is crucial.

Background: Social isolation, defined as an individual's lack of social connections, is particularly prevalent among older adults. However, its association with health outcomes among the oldest-old population (aged 80 and above) was understudied., Aims: To examine the association between social isolation and the likelihood of becoming a centenarian among the oldest-old people in China, aiming to provide novel insights into promoting healthy aging and longevity., Methods: Using data from The Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, conducted in 22 provinces in mainland China since 1998, we performed a community-based, prospective nested case-control study. The primary outcome was survival to the age of 100 by 2018 (the end of follow-up). Information on social isolation and other covariates was collected via a questionnaire at baseline. The degree of social isolation was categorized as low, moderate, and high. Included (n = 5,716) were 1,584 identified centenarians and 4,132 controls (deceased before reaching 100 years), matched by age, sex, and year of entry. A conditional logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between social isolation and the likelihood of becoming a centenarian, adjusting for demographic factors, lifestyle factors, chronic disease, potential disability, optimistic attitude, and perceived loneliness., Results: Individuals with the highest social isolation score had lower odds of becoming centenarians (adjusted OR:0.82; 95% CI: 0.68, 0.98), relative to those with the least social isolation (P-value < 0.05), and this association persisted in sensitivity analyses. The association was more pronounced among ever smokers, compared to never smokers (P-value = 0.001). The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the wellbeing of the older adults worldwide. Both social isolation and loneliness are associated with decreased subjective wellbeing, but it is uncertain whether their effects are independent or if loneliness represents the affective pathway through which social isolation impairs subjective wellbeing. We therefore assessed the extent to which the association between social isolation and subjective wellbeing is mediated by loneliness. We utilized data from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and focused on a sample of 3,821 individuals aged 60 and above as the participants for our study. The results revealed a significant negative association between social isolation and subjective wellbeing among the older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, loneliness was found to mediate this relationship, indicating that social isolation led to increased feelings of loneliness, which in turn negatively impacted subjective wellbeing. These findings highlight the detrimental effects of social isolation and loneliness on the wellbeing of the older adults in China during the pandemic. Background: The high prevalence of sensory impairment and functional limitations in older adults is a significant concern, yet there is limited understanding of the relationship between these two conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the pathways connecting sensory impairment and functional limitations by examining serial multiple mediating effects of social isolation and cognition in older adults., Methods: Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study dataset, a sample of 4871 older adults was selected. The study variables included sensory impairment, functional limitations, social isolation and cognition, and other covariates. A hierarchical multiple linear regression model was used to assess the association between sensory impairment and functional limitations. Mediation analysis was conducted to explore the sequential multiple mediating effects of social isolation and cognitive function in the relationship between sensory impairment and functional limitations., Results: Our findings revealed a significant and positive association between sensory impairment and functional limitations (B = 0.615, 95% CI: 0.397, 0.834). After adjusting for social isolation and cognitive function, the impact of sensory impairment on functional limitations accounted for 87.19% of the total effect. Additionally, approximately 12.81% of the significant relationship between dual sensory impairment and functional limitations was mediated by social isolation and cognitive function. A serial multiple mediating pathway (sensory impairment → social isolation → cognition → functional limitations) was identified, with a coefficient of 0.013 (95% CI: 0.006, 0.020)., Conclusions: Our study provides evidence for the mediating effects of social isolation and cognition in the relationship between sensory impairment and functional limitations. Given the prevalence of functional limitations among older adults with sensory impairment, it is crucial to consider social isolation and cognitive function in efforts to reduce the burden of disability care. Background: Older adults are vulnerable to social isolation due to declining physical and cognitive function, decreased interpersonal interactions, and reduced outdoor activities after retirement. This study aimed to develop and validate a predictive model to assess the risk of social isolation among older adults in China., Methods: Using data from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The study cohort was randomly divided into training and validation groups in a 70:30 ratio. We used least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis with tenfold cross-validation to identify optimal predictive factors and examined the correlates of social isolation using logistic regression. A nomogram was constructed for the predictive model, and its accuracy was assessed using calibration curves. The predictive performance of the model was assessed using area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and decision curve analysis (DCA)., Results: From the 2011 CHARLS database, 4,747 older adults were included in the final analysis, of whom 1,654 (34.8%) experienced social isolation. Multifactorial logistic regression identified educational level, marital status, gender, physical activity, physical self -maintenance ability, and number of children as predictive factors for social isolation. The predictive model achieved an AUC of 0.739 (95%CI = 0.722-0.756) in the training set and 0.708 (95%CI = 0.681-0.735) in the validation set. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test yielded P values of 0.111 and 0.324, respectively (both P > 0.05), indicating significant agreement between the nomogram and observed outcomes. Background: Internet gaming disorder among university students has become a great concern for university counsellors worldwide since the COVID-19 pandemic. The factors influencing the development of internet gaming disorder in students during the COVID-19 pandemic could be different from those before the pandemic., Objective: This study aims to explore the associations among social isolation, self-control, and internet gaming disorder in Chinese university students and to examine whether self-control mediates the positive effects of social isolation on internet gaming disorder., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was employed to collect data from university students in Shandong province of China from April to September 2022. The Isolation subscale of the Self-Compassion Scale, Self-Control Scale, and Internet Gaming Disorder Scale were used to assess the social isolation, self-control, and internet gaming disorder among university students, respectively. Models 4 and 5 of PROCESS software were used to analyze the mediating role of self-control and the moderating role of gender on the association between social isolation and internet gaming disorder., Results: A total of 479 students were recruited from 6 universities located in 3 different regions of Shandong, China. Students had low levels of internet gaming disorder and moderate levels of social isolation and self-control, with mean scores of 8.94 (SD 9.06), 12.04 (SD 3.53), and 57.15 (SD 8.44), respectively. Social isolation was positively correlated with internet gaming disorder (r=0.217; P<.001), and self-control was negatively correlated with social isolation (r=-0.355; P<.001) and internet gaming disorder (r=-0.260; P<.001). Self-control played a mediating role in the association between social isolation and internet gaming disorder (β=-.185, 95% CI -.295 to -.087). The effects of social isolation on internet gaming disorder among female students were lower than those among male students., Conclusions: Self-control was a mediator in the association between social isolation and internet gaming disorder. Moreover, gender played a moderating role in the association between social isolation and internet gaming disorder. This study highlights the need to alleviate the development of internet gaming disorder among students during a pandemic, especially that of male students. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social isolation, perceived ageism and subjective well-being among rural Chinese older adults and its mechanisms of action., Methods: A total of 403 rural resident older adults were surveyed from March to April 2024. Data were collected using the General Information Questionnaire, the General Alienation Scale (GAS), the Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ), and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness (MUNSH). SPSS 27.0 and PROCESS macro were used to analyze the data., Results: Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation (p<0.01) between subjective well-being and social isolation (r = -0.720) and perceived ageism (r = -0.661) among rural older adults. Objective: This study aims to elucidate the heterogeneous cognitive trajectories among older adults in China through a comprehensive, nationally representative longitudinal study. Furthermore, it seeks to investigate the impact of multidimensional social isolation on heterogeneous cognitive trajectories among older adults in China., Methods: Utilizing data from three successive waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) spanning 2016 to 2020, this investigation quantified baseline social isolation across three dimensions-family isolation, friend isolation, and subjective isolation-alongside cognitive function scores of older adults, measured across all three waves. Through latent class growth models, heterogeneous cognitive trajectories were delineated. The influence of family isolation, friend isolation, and subjective isolation on these cognitive trajectories was examined employing multinomial logistic regression analysis., Results: The study included 6,378 participants aged 60 and above, revealing three primary cognitive trajectories: High baseline stable group (68.8%), High baseline but declining group (21.7%), and Low baseline deteriorating group (9.5%). Adjusting for variables such as personal physical characteristics, social networks, living and working conditions, and the surrounding policy environment, the findings indicated that family isolation did not significantly affect cognitive function's high-level decline or low-level deterioration. Conversely, friend isolation markedly increased the risk of high-level cognitive decline (OR = 1.289) and low-level cognitive deterioration (OR = 1.592). Participation in adult education is a crucial component of the active aging framework. However, there have been limited studies exploring the association between participation in adult education and subjective wellbeing among older adults. Furthermore, the underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms in this association have not been extensively investigated. This study aims to explore the mediating roles of physical and digital isolation, as well as the moderating roles of educational level. A sample of 7,602 older adults (M = 70.97, SD = 7.13) was drawn from the 2018 wave of the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the mediating and moderating roles. The results revealed that participation in adult education is positively associated with higher levels of life satisfaction and lower levels of loneliness among older adults. Both physical isolation and digital isolation play mediating roles in these associations. Moreover, educational level moderates the association between participation in adult education and older adults' life satisfaction and loneliness. The linkages are significant for older adults with lower levels of education, but not significant for those with higher levels of education. These findings contribute to current knowledge and offer practical implications for improving older adults' subjective wellbeing through participation in adult education.

Objectives: With increasing life expectancy and rapid ageing, there is an expanding number of older people who have functional declines, greater needs for care and support and who are at increased risk of insufficient social interaction. Longitudinal investigations on the interplay between loneliness, social isolation and care dependence remain limited. This study thus aimed to investigate the longitudinal reciprocal association between social isolation/loneliness and care dependence among older adults in Latin America and China., Methods: We analysed data from the population-based cohorts from the 10/66 Dementia Research Group (DRG) project (baseline 2003-07 and follow-up 2007-2010). The 10/66 DRG study recruited and followed up older adults aged 65 years or above in 11 catchment areas in Latin America and China. A total of 15,027 older adults from Latin America and China (mean age = 73.5, standard deviation = 6.5) were included in our analyses. Cross-lagged panel models were used to investigate potential reciprocal associations., Results: Loneliness was positively associated with care dependence at baseline (β = 0.11, p < 0.001 in Latin America; β = 0.16, p < 0.05 in China]. Social isolation consistently had a stronger positive association with care dependence across all study sites in both waves. Longitudinally, care dependence positively predicted loneliness (β = 0.10, p < 0.001) and social isolation (β = 0.05, p < 0.001) in Latin American study sites but not in China. Yet there was no statistical evidence of lagged effects of loneliness and social isolation on care dependence in all study countries., Conclusions: Older people with care dependence are at risk of developing loneliness and social isolation. It is crucial to develop complex care models using a societal approach to address social and care needs holistically, especially for the older group with declining functional capacity. This study aims to verify the relationship between social isolation, cultural adaptation, and gambling addiction tendency among Korean Chinese sports club participants living in Korea. This will be helpful in identifying the sports gambling tendencies of Korean Chinese sports club participants living in Korea and provide basic data for the development and implementation of preventive measures and treatments. This study recruited 340 sports club participants in Seoul and Incheon, Gyeonggi province in South Korea, using a convenience sampling method. A survey was conducted by visiting the places where the subjects were taking part in sports activities and explaining the contents and purpose of the survey. The survey was a self-administered questionnaire that the participants were to complete themselves. Of the original 340 participants, 314 questionnaires were included in the data analysis, with 26 questionnaires excluded for insincere responses or omissions. analysis result, First, considering the effect of social isolation of Korean Chinese sports club participants on cultural adaptation, the results show that emotional isolation had a negative effect on all subfactors of cultural adaptation, and social alienation had a negative effect on work adaptation, among the subfactors of cultural adaptation. Second, examining the effect of social isolation of Korean Chinese sports club participants on sports gambling addiction tendency, among the subfactors of social isolation, we find that emotional isolation had the most positive effect on sports gambling addiction tendency, followed by social alienation. Third, we examined the effect of the cultural adaptation of Korean Chinese sports club participants on sports gambling addiction tendency; among the subfactors of cultural adaptation, work adaptation had a negative effect on sports gambling addiction tendency., (© 2023. Previous research has identified social isolation as a significant detriment to the wellbeing of older adults. However, studies that consider endogenous issues are scarce. The present paper examines the impact of the recent exogenous shock, the COVID-19 pandemic on the wellbeing of the older adult population using a longitudinal dataset from China for the period 2016-2020. The results of this study indicate that the life satisfaction of Chinese older adults was negatively affected, e particularly in regions where social distancing measures were more strictly enforced. Declines in physical and mental health were found to be attributable to declines in life satisfaction. Those who experienced greater exposure to the pandemic were more likely to suffer from chronic disease, illness, and insomnia, and many found it challenging to complete tasks during the lockdown. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional associations and temporal dynamics between social isolation (SI) and loneliness among older adults., Design: This is a prospective cohort study., Setting and Participants: With the global phenomenon of population aging, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of SI and loneliness among older adults. These factors exert substantial impacts on the health and well-being of this population. Consequently, it is imperative to implement more effective interventions targeting SI and combating loneliness in order to enhance the overall health and well-being of older adults., Methods: Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) were analyzed, focusing on individuals aged 65 and older. Generalized Cross-Lagged Modeling (GCLM) was used to assess these associations., Results: The findings reveal significant cross-lagged effects between SI and loneliness over the course of 16 years. Higher levels of SI at 1 time point predict increased loneliness scores in subsequent periods, and greater levels of loneliness at 1 time point predict higher SI scores in future periods. Notably, the impact of SI on loneliness is found to be larger and more enduring compared to the influence of loneliness on SI. These cross-lagged effects persist over an extended period, indicating a long-term reciprocal relationship between SI and loneliness among older adults., Conclusions and Implications: This study provides valuable insights into the bidirectional associations between SI and loneliness among older adults. Given that the effect of SI dominates, the findings suggest that public health strategies aimed at promoting health and well-being should prioritize interventions that enrich older adults' social networks. Introduction: The study aimed to investigate the associations of changes in social isolation, loneliness, or both, with cognitive function., Methods: Data were from 7299 older adults in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We defined four change patterns (no, incident, transient, and persistent) for social isolation and loneliness, and created nine-category variable to represent the joint changes. Tobit regression models and Cox models were performed., Results: Incident, transient, and persistent social isolation or loneliness may accelerate cognitive decline (p < 0.05). Incident, transient, and persistent social isolation were associated with higher cognitive impairment risk, while only persistent loneliness was associated with higher cognitive impairment risk (p < 0.001). Notably, short-term or persistent social isolation was associated with accelerated cognitive decline and incident cognitive impairment, regardless of different loneliness change status (p < 0.05)., Discussion: Short-term or persistent social isolation and persistent loneliness may be a salient risk factor for cognitive decline and cognitive impairment., Highlights: Incident, transient, and persistent social isolation were associated with accelerated cognitive decline and higher cognitive impairment risk. Objectives: This study examined the relationship of social isolation and loneliness on sarcopenia among Chinese middle-aged and elderly people., Methods: Social isolation, loneliness, and sarcopenia were measured at baseline. Follow-up measures of new-onset sarcopenia were obtained 4 years later. Then used logistic regression to evaluate the association between social isolation, loneliness and sarcopenia., Results: In cross-sectional analysis, social isolation and loneliness are significantly associated with sarcopenia [OR = 1.88 (95% CI = 1.54-2.28)]. In longitudinal analysis, social isolation and loneliness are significantly associated with sarcopenia [OR = 1.09 (95% CI = 0.71-1.69)]. Social isolation and loneliness have a synergistic effect. Among them, individuals over 60 years old [OR = 2.01 (95% CI = 1.37-2.96)] and those without social support [OR = 2.64 (1.61-4.32), P-for interaction < 0.001] are at higher risk., Conclusion: Social isolation and loneliness were significantly associated with sarcopenia, and there was a synergistic effect between social isolation and loneliness., (© 2024. Objectives: This study aimed to examine reciprocal and dynamic associations between Social Isolation (SI), loneliness, and disability among Chinese older adults., Design: This is a prospective cohort study., Setting and Participants: The global trend of population aging has resulted in a significant rise in the prevalence of disabilities, SI, and loneliness among older adults. These factors can severely impact the health and well-being of older adults. Therefore, it is crucial to implement more efficient interventions aimed at reducing disabilities, addressing SI, and combating loneliness among older adults in order to improve their overall health and well-being., Methods: Using a large, nationally representative sample spanning 16 years, we employed the general cross-lagged panel model to explore the relationships among 50,348 older adults with a mean age of 81.83 at baseline. Disability was measured by a comprehensive index tool that incorporated multiple dimensions. SI was measured using an SI index, and loneliness was evaluated using a single-item measure., Results: SI emerged as a stronger predictor of disability than loneliness. Longitudinal analysis revealed accumulative disadvantages in the association between SI and disability. Additionally, disability was found to contribute to increased SI and loneliness. However, our study did not detect any variance in the strength of the cross-lagged effects between social isolation and disability., Conclusions and Implications: The findings suggest that reducing SI is crucial for reducing disability among older adults. Initiating early interventions to minimize initial SI could aid in preventing later-life disability. Purpose: Social isolation and depression have an impact on cognitive frailty. However, the underlying mechanisms between these variables have not been well defined. This study aims to investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the association between social isolation and cognitive frailty among older adults in China., Methods: From Mar 2023 to Aug 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 496 community-dwelling older adults aged ≥60 years in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Demographic information was collected using the General Information Questionnaire. The Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6), Geriatric Depression Scale 15-item (GDS-15), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), and FRAIL scale were used for the questionnaire survey. Multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression were utilized to explore the associations among social isolation, depressive symptoms, and cognitive frailty, and Bootstrap analysis was used to explore the mediating role of depressive symptoms in social isolation and cognitive frailty., Results: Linear regression results revealed that social isolation was positively associated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.873, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that social isolation (OR = 1.769, 95% CI = 1.018~3.075) and depressive symptoms (OR = 1.227, 95% CI = 1.108~1.357) were significantly associated with cognitive frailty. Mediation analysis demonstrated that depressive symptoms significantly mediated the relationship between social isolation and cognitive frailty, with an indirect effect of 0.027 (95% CI = 0.003~0.051), and the mediating effect accounted for 23.6% of the total effect., Conclusion: Social isolation is associated with cognitive frailty in community-dwelling older adults, and depressive symptoms partially mediate the effect between social isolation and cognitive frailty. Social isolation was associated with emotional problems (depression and anxiety) among older adults, however, little is known in China. Thus, we conducted a cross-sectional study including 6,664 ≥ 65 years older adults in Ningbo, China. We collected data on social isolation, depression, and anxiety by specific scales. The relationship between social isolation and emotional problems was estimated by multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models. The population-attributable risk percentage (PAR%) was used to explore the contribution of social isolation to emotional problems. Overall, the percentage of participants who had experienced social isolation, depression, and anxiety was 12.67%, 4.83%, and 2.63%. Compared with the elderly without social isolation, the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of depression and anxiety with social isolation were 1.77 (1.25-2.51) and 1.66 (1.05-2.63), respectively. The PAR analysis showed that 10.66% of depression and 9.03% of anxiety could be attributable to social isolation. In the gender subgroup, ORs and PAR% were only significantly observed in female participants. The association between childhood bullying victimization and depression has been well-explored among young adults, but little is known about whether this relationship persists into later life stages, specifically during middle-aged and older phases. Moreover, the intricate mechanisms underpinning this association and the potential existence of gender differences within this context remain inadequately elucidated. To address this gap in knowledge, this study aims to investigate the association between childhood bullying victimization and depression in later life, with a focus on exploring the mediating role of social isolation and the moderating roles of gender. A nationally representative sample of 5,070 individuals (mean age = 61.02, SD  = 9.48; male = 55%) was drawn from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. By employing the bootstrapping analysis method, the mediating role of social isolation was examined, and the moderating role of gender was tested through the generation of interaction items. The results reveal a significant association between childhood bullying victimization and severe depression in later life. Additionally, social isolation plays a mediating role in this association between childhood bullying victimization and social isolation, and the association between social isolation and depression, as well as the relationship between social isolation and depression, are both moderated by gender, presenting stronger effects for female groups than for male groups. However, no moderating role of gender is found in terms of the direct association between childhood bullying victimization and depression. These findings highlight the fact that childhood bullying is not only a problem in the immediate term but also a concern that affects individuals across entire life course. This study has implications for healthcare in proactively investigating, diagnosing, and treating depression by inquiring about childhood bullying victimization experiences. Objectives: Despite the recognized importance of community social service and community built facility for enhancing older adults' life satisfaction, the mechanisms underlying their relationship have not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to complement the existing knowledge by investigating the mediating role of social disconnectedness and loneliness in the association between community support and life satisfaction among older adults., Methods: Using data from the 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey, the study analyzes responses from 9,874 Chinese older adults (mean age = 71.30 years, SD = 7.30). We conducted descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation to explore the variables. This study also used Mplus 8.0 to conduct a path analysis model that evaluated both the direct and indirect effects of community social service and built facility on life satisfaction. Social disconnectedness and loneliness were included as mediating variables in this model., Results: The present study results show that both community social service and community built facility are positively associated with life satisfaction among older adults, and community social service is more imporatant for enhancing the life satisfaction. In addition, these associations are mediated by social disconnectedness and loneliness., Conclusion: Our research suggests that strengthening community social service programs and improving the built environment can reduce social disconnectedness and loneliness among older adults, ultimately enhancing their life satisfaction. Objectives: To explore the risk factors of social isolation in older adults by meta-analysis., Methods: We examined articles that had been published on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service platform, VIP Periodical Chinese Journal Service platform, Medical Literature database, PubMed, Embase database, Chinese BioMedical Literature database (CBM), and the Cochrane Library. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis., Results: A total of 13 pieces of literature comprising 47,288 patients were included, including five in Chinese and eight in English. According to our review, the common risk factors reported were age, sex, education level, marital status, self-rated health status, depression, social support, cognitive function, and basic diseases. Gender (female), education level (lower education level), marital status (divorced), self-rated health status (poor), depression, lack of social support, inadequate cognitive function, and underlying disorders were the key risk factors for social isolation in older adults., Conclusions: To reduce social isolation in older adults, paying more attention to the aging population with poor marital statuses, low education levels, poor health statuses, depression, poor cognitive function, and other underlying diseases is necessary. This study aimed to examine joint trajectories of loneliness, social isolation and sarcopenia and their associations with adverse outcomes. A total of 4701 participants aged ≥60 years who had a baseline and at least one follow-up assessment of loneliness, social isolation and sarcopenia across 2011, 2013 and 2015 waves in China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Adverse outcomes were obtained in 2018 wave. Joint trajectories were fit using the parallel process latent class growth analysis, and their associations with adverse outcomes were evaluated using modified Poisson regression. Joint trajectory patterns for social relationship and sarcopenia did not vary by the assessment for sarcopenia, but did vary by the assessment for social relationship. Older adults exhibit distinct joint trajectories and those with persistent combination of loneliness or social isolation and sarcopenia experience greatest risk of adverse outcomes. Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of social isolation on the utilization of primary health services among older adults in China., Methods: Data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) conducted in 2018 were utilized. A binary logistic regression model was established, and propensity score matching (PSM) was employed for analysis., Results: The results of the binary logistic regression showed that family isolation within social isolation had a significant negative impact on the utilization of primary health services for older adults. In contrast, there was no significant association between friend isolation, community isolation, and the utilization of primary health services. Furthermore, the PSM results, using three matching methods (nearest neighbor matching, radius matching, and kernel matching), confirmed that family isolation significantly reduced older adults' utilization of primary health services, consistent with the baseline regression findings., Conclusion: Reducing the occurrence of family isolation among older adults may be a cost-effective intervention measure. Background: Epidemiological studies have shown that social isolation, which is prevalent in older adults, is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, but the prevalence of and trends in regard to social isolation remain ambiguous in China. The aim of this study was to elucidate the trends regarding the prevalence of social isolation among middle-aged and older adults in China from 2011 to 2018 and to further identify associated risk factors., Methods: A repeated cross-sectional study, The data were derived from panel sample data of four waves conducted from May 2011 to August 2018 in the nationally representative China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) using multistage probability sampling. Social isolation was ascertained by the five item Steptoe Social Isolation Index. The potential covariates were demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and health status. Linear-by-linear association was used to assess the trends in regard to social isolation over time under the influence of the potential covariates. Linear-by-linear association and an age-period-cohort analysis were used to explore the trends, and two-level (time, individual) generalized estimating equation models (GEE) linked multivariate binary logistic regression were performed to identify risk factors., Results: A high prevalence of social isolation and a moderate upward trend from 2013 to 2018 were observed among a U-shaped trend prevalence of social isolation from 2011 to 2018 across China, with rates of 38.09% (95% CI = 36.73-39.45) in 2011, 33.66% (32.32-35.00) in 2013, 39.13% (37.59-40.67) in 2015, and 39.95% (38.59-41.31) in 2018 (p < 0.001). The prevalence of social isolation increased with age and educational attainment. Females had a higher prevalence than males. The prevalence of social isolation was found to be significantly lower in pensioners than in non-pensioners between 2011 and 2018 (p < 0.001). The prevalence of social isolation was 38.9%, 34.9%, 38.5%, and 44.08% about three times higher among those who doid not use the Internet and 13.44%, 11.64%, 12.93%, and 16.73% than among those who doid in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018 respectively. The participants with short (0-5 h) and long sleep (9 or more hours), and poor self-rated health had a higher prevalence of social isolation than the others. Older age, lower educational attainment, living in a rural region, lack of medical insurance or pension, lack of internet use and poor health were risk factors (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: We found a U-shaped prevalence of social isolation trends from 2011 to 2018 and revealed increasing trends from 2013 to 2018 among middle-aged and older adults in China. The findings of the study highlight the urgent need for interventions to reduce social isolation including improving sleep quality and internet skills. Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) are susceptible to social isolation as a result of stigma and discrimination, which not only diminishes adherence to antiretroviral therapy but also heightens the risks of hospital readmission, depression, and mortality. However, there is currently no systematic review addressing the occurrence and impact of social isolation in individuals with HIV. Therefore, this study undertook a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature to examine the prevalence and influencing factors associated with social isolation among PLWH. Methods and analysis: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, China Science and Technology Journal Database, The China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Data and Chinese Biomedicine Literature Database will be searched from the establishment of the database to the latest search date. Literature screening, data extraction and literature quality assessment will be done independently by two researchers and results will be cross-referenced. Data analysis will be performed using stata15.1 software. Risk of publication bias will be assessed using Begg's and Egger's methods. Heterogeneity between studies will then be assessed using the I2 index and its 95% CI and Q statistics. Sources of heterogeneity will be accounted for by subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Results: The results may reveal the prevalence of social isolation among PLWH and provide data support for understanding its etiology and prevention. Conclusion: By systematically reviewing the existing literature on social isolation among PLWH, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of social isolation within this population, elucidate the detrimental effects it poses for people affected by HIV, and effectively inform targeted interventions for high-risk groups. Introduction: This study aimed to analyze the association of childhood social isolation and behavioral cognition, and moderating effect of family support in middle-aged and older adults., Methods: The study samples were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) of 2014 and 2018. The dependent variable was behavioral cognitive ability, measured by episodic memory and mental state; The independent variable was childhood social isolation, and the moderating variable was family support. The baseline OLS regression model was used to explore the correlation among independent variables, dependent variables and moderating variables, the least square regression model was used to analyze the moderating effect of family support, and the replacement model and the method of replacing characteristic variables were used for the robustness test. Hierarchical regression heterogeneity analysis was performed to further verify the results of the moderating effect., Results: In this study, 3459 samples were selected for analysis. OLS baseline regression results showed that the deepening of childhood social isolation was significantly correlated with the decline of behavioral cognitive ability in middle-aged and elderly people (β=-0.9664, t = 0.0893). After adding all covariates, we found that childhood social isolation was significantly negatively correlated with behavioral cognitive ability in middle-aged and elderly people (β=-0.4118, t = 0.0785). Among the moderating variables of family support, we found that there is a moderating effect on female guardians' efforts of caring in early parental support (β=0.0948, t = 0.0320) and the frequency of children's visits in late children support (β=0.0073, t = 0.0036). Finally, through the heterogeneity test, we found that there were differences in the relationship between childhood social isolation and behavioral cognitive ability among middle-aged and elderly people of different ages, genders and places of residence. Moreover, there are significant differences in the moderating effect of female guardian's effort of caring and the frequency of children's visits in heterogeneous groups., Conclusions: The greater the degree of childhood social isolation experienced by middle-aged and elderly people, the worse their behavioral cognitive ability. Social isolation and loneliness have been proved to be associated with many adverse health outcomes, but their influence on hypertension remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the relationship of social isolation and loneliness with hypertension risk among middle-aged and older adults in China. We used data from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Participants were assessed for social isolation and loneliness at baseline, and hypertension was identified by self-report and blood pressure measurement at follow-up in 2015. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association of social isolation and loneliness with the risk of hypertension. A total of 3711 residents were included. 13.7 % of the participants had high level of social isolation and 18.1 % felt lonely. During the four-year follow up period, 651 participants developed hypertension. People with high level of social isolation had an increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR]: 1.40, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.09–1.79). Similar results were found between social isolation score and hypertension risk (OR: 1.14, 95 % CI: 1.04–1.26). No significant association between loneliness and hypertension or any interaction effect of social isolation and loneliness on hypertension were observed. Limited by the structure of questionnaire, some of the information was derived by self-report, which may lead to recalling bias. Social isolation, rather than loneliness was associated with hypertension for middle aged and older adults. Background: This study aimed to examine the bidirectional relationship between social isolation and cognitive performance among Chinese middle-aged and older adults., Methods: We used four waves of data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. A latent growth model (LGM) was applied to examine the association between social isolation and cognitive performance across different characteristics., Results: In the analysis, we ultimately included 9,367 participants after excluding respondents with missing key variables. Social isolation and cognitive performance showed significant differences across time. After adjusting for the confounders, there was a significant association between higher social isolation and poor cognitive performance (β = -1.38, p < 0.001), and higher levels of social isolation resulted in a more pronounced decline in cognition over time (β = 0.17, p < 0.001). Additionally, the path coefficient between the initial level of cognition at baseline and the slope of social isolation was - 0.07 (p < 0.001) and 0.01 (p = 0.021), respectively. For the correlation between slopes, our study found that females' cognition scores were more susceptible to social isolation (β = - 2.78, p < 0.001). Similarly, regarding cognition scores, the influence of social isolation was greater among people with education below the primary level (β = - 2.89, p = 0.002) or a greater number of chronic diseases (β = - 2.56, p = 0.001)., Conclusion: Our findings support the bidirectional association between social isolation and cognition. Specifically, higher baseline social isolation and its rate of increase over time contribute to an intensification of cognitive decline at follow-up. Objectives: Few studies have explored the mechanisms underlying the relationship between sedentary behavior and physical frailty. The aim of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of social isolation on the association between sedentary behavior and physical frailty among older adults in rural China., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting and Participants: Data were from 3238 individuals aged ≥60 years from rural areas in China., Methods: Binary logistic regression was used to explore the association between sedentary behavior and physical frailty and the moderating effect of social isolation., Results: The prevalence of physical frailty was 18.7% among the older adults, and 17.0% of them were sedentary for ≥8 h/d. Compared with older adults with sedentary behavior for <4 h/d, participants with sedentary behavior for ≥8 h/d were more likely to suffer from physical frailty [odds ratio (OR), 2.26; 95% CI, 1.57-3.27]. We found that social isolation may aggravate this relationship (OR, 3.31; 95% CI, 2.06-5.32), especially for rural older adults who were sedentary for ≥8 h/day., Conclusion and Implications: More sedentary behavior was associated with higher risk of physical frailty, which was especially apparent among older adults with social isolation, suggesting that sedentary older people who experienced social isolation were more vulnerable to physical frailty. Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sensory impairments (SIs) including single vision impairment (SVI), single hearing impairment (SHI), and dual sensory impairments (DSI) with social isolation in the middle-aged and older Chinese population., Methods: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). In total, 11,674 Chinese older adults aged over 45 were included at baseline 2011, and 6,859 participants who accomplished all four interviews from 2011 to 2018 were adapted for longitudinal analyses. Sensory status and social isolation measurements including social disconnectedness and self-perceived loneliness were collected. Assessment of social disconnectedness included the number of types of social activities in which they participated and the frequency of such participation. Loneliness referred to the subjective perception of loneliness. Other covariates included socio-demographic characteristics, medical conditions, and lifestyle-related factors. The impacts of baseline sensory status on social disconnectedness and loneliness were assessed using univariate and multivariate generalized linear models. A generalized linear model with generalized estimation equations (GEE) was used to assess the association between time-varying sensory statuses with social disconnectedness or loneliness over 8 years after being adjusted with multi-confounding factors., Results: Participants with SIs had significantly higher levels of social disconnectedness and self-perceived loneliness, compared to those who were free of SI. All kinds of SIs were significantly associated with loneliness according to both cross-sectional and longitudinal data. The correlations between DSI and social disconnectedness or loneliness at baseline and over 8 years were also noticed. SHI was found to be significantly associated with both frequency and types of social activities according to cross-sectional data and with the frequency of social activity participation in longitudinal analysis. SVI was only associated with the types of social activities at baseline (all p- values < 0.05)., Conclusion: Sensory impairments, especially dual sensory impairments, have explicitly detrimental effects on social isolation among the older Chinese population. Migrant workers in China are experiencing social isolation caused by institutional and non-institutional barriers. This paper explores the relationship between social isolation and migrants' smoking behavior as well as gender differences in smoking. Migrants' social isolation is systematically measured from the structural and qualitative perspective. Using the survey data of 2,188 rural-to-urban migrants in China in 2016, the prevalence of smoking among migrants is 38.21%, with 51.70% for males and 4.06% for females. Migrants with social isolation, such as migration instability, lack of ties with family and fellow migrants, and life dissatisfaction in migrant cities, are more likely to smoke and the impacts vary by gender. The income and price elasticities of cigarette demand show that male migrant smokers are more sensitive to income and price changes than female migrant smokers. Boosting rural migrants' integration into the local community will reduce smoking prevalence, improving the overall health of the society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The majority of Chinese Americans is foreign-born, and it is well-documented that immigration to the United States (US) leads to increased risk for chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes. Increased disease risk has been attributed to changes in lifestyle behaviors following immigration, but few studies have considered the psychosocial impact of immigration upon biomarkers of disease risk., Purpose: To examine associations of psychological stress and social isolation with markers of type 2 diabetes risk over time among US Chinese immigrants., Methods: In this longitudinal study of 614 Chinese immigrants, participants completed assessments of perceived stress, acculturative stress, negative life events, and social isolation annually at three time points. Fasting blood samples were obtained at each time point to measure blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and insulin resistance. Mean duration between baseline and follow-up assessments was approximately 2 years., Results: Increases in migration-related stress, perceived stress and social isolation were associated with significant increases in fasting glucose at follow-up independent of age, body mass index, length of US residence, and other potential covariates. Moreover, increases in glucose varied depending on perceived stress levels at baseline, such that those with higher baseline stress had a steeper increase in glucose over time., Conclusions: Psychological stress and social isolation are associated with increases in fasting glucose in a sample of US Chinese immigrants. Objectives: This study aims to identify patterns of social isolation and low social support, and discover their associations with frailty trajectories among Chinese older adults. Methods: The paper used five waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS, 2005-2018). The latent class analysis, multi-trajectory modeling, and the multinomial logistic regression approaches were used to perform the analysis. Results: The paper identified five types of social isolation and low social support, and three typical frailty trajectories. Patterns of social isolation and low social support were associated with frailty trajectories among older adults. Conclusions: Distinct patterns of social isolation and low social support were significantly correlated with frailty trajectories. Background: For female breast cancer patients, the psychological status after surgery, especially the social and family psychological-related factors, deserves more attention. This study analyzed the influence of social constraints, social support, social isolation, family conflict, and family emotion expression on depression. At the same time, this study conducted the relationship between the variables and the mechanism of action., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and 522 breast cancer patients finished questionnaires consisting of Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), Social Constraints Scale-5 (SCS-5), Family Environment Scale (FES), and Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6). Multivariable logical regression was used to explore influencing factors. Pearson's correlation, hierarchical regression, and simple slope analysis were conducted to verify the role of self-efficacy., Results: 71.6% of patients had depressive symptoms. Family contradiction (OR = 10.086), social constraints (OR = 2.522), social isolation (OR = 2.507), and high blood glucose (OR = 2.156) were risk factors of depressive symptoms. Family emotional expression (OR = 0.480), family intimacy (OR = 0.235), and self-efficacy (OR = 0.246) were protective factors against depressive symptoms. Background: Few studies of social isolation, loneliness and associations with all-cause mortality in older adults have been conducted in non-Western countries. The aim of this study was to conduct such an analysis in a nationally representative sample of Chinese older adults., Methods: This study used eight waves of data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 1998 to 2018 and focused on participants aged ≥60 years. A total of 21,570 people died (61.2%) over a median follow-up of 4.8 years. Social isolation, loneliness, demographic, health and lifestyle factors were measured at baseline. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine the associations of isolation and loneliness with all-cause mortality., Results: This study included 35,254 participants with mean age of 86.63 ± 11.39 years. Social isolation was significantly associated with an increased mortality (adjusted HR 1.22; 95% CI 1.18-1.25; p < 0.01). The association of loneliness with mortality was nonsignificant after adjustment for health indicators and low psychological well-being (HR 1.01; 95% CI 0.98-1.04; p = 0.69). However, when stratified by age, there was a significant association of loneliness with mortality among participants aged <80 years (HR 1.15; 95% CI 1.05-1.26; p < 0.01)., Conclusions: Social isolation was associated with an increased all-cause mortality among the older Chinese adults. However, loneliness was associated with an increased mortality only among younger participants. Background: Social isolation and disability in performing activities of daily living are increasingly recognised as significant public health concerns globally. We aimed to investigate their bidirectional associations and the related temporal dynamics in Chinese older adults., Methods: We retrieved data from the six waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2002-18) and used generalised cross-lagged modelling (GCLM) to assess the bidirectional associations between social isolation and disability in performing activities of daily living., Results: We found that higher levels of social isolation were predictive of increased scores in disabilities in performing activities of daily living. Conversely, disabilities in performing activities of daily living showed less predictive power in relation to social isolation. The temporal dynamics analysis indicated a peak in the bidirectional associations after approximately six years, followed by decreasing trends., Conclusions: Our results indicate that social isolation is dominant in the bidirectional relationship. Efforts focusing on reducing it can potentially minimise disabilities in performing activities of daily living among older adults. Background: Household solid fuel use and social isolation are reported to increase the risk of depressive symptoms, but their joint effect has not yet been examined. This study aimed to explore the separate and joint effects of household solid fuel use and social isolation on depression., Methods: We used data from the latest four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Depression was defined as a score of ≥12 using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 10). Cox proportional hazards models were applied to explore the separate and joint associations of household solid fuel use and social isolation with incident depression., Results: During the seven-year follow-up, 2793 (30.25 %) out of the 9232 participants were identified with depressive symptoms. Solid fuel use for household heating or cooking was significantly associated with more hazards of depressive symptoms after adjusting for potential confounders (cooking: HR = 1.280, 95 % CI = 1.175-1.394; heating: HR = 1.142, 95 % CI = 1.054-1.238). High social isolation at baseline was also a significant predictor of incident depressive symptoms (HR = 1.139, 95 % CI = 1.053-1.231). Participants exposed to both solid fuel use and high social isolation were found to have higher hazards of experiencing depressive symptoms than those exposed to none or only one of these two risk factors (heating: HR for 'solid fuel use + high social isolation'=1.308 versus HR for other groups = 1-1.185; cooking: HR for 'solid fuel use + high social isolation' = 1.430 versus HR for other groups = 1-1.255)., Conclusion: Household solid fuel use and social isolation were separately and jointly associated with higher risks of incident depression. Objective: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of social isolation between physical mobility and cognitive function, and whether there are gender differences in the above mediating effects among Chinese older adults., Methods: This is a prospective and cohort study. We obtained data from the 2011 (Time 1, T1), 2015 (Time 2, T2) and 2018 (Time 3, T3) waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, including 3,395 participants aged 60 years or above. Cognition was evaluated by Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status, words recall, and figure drawing, which was widely used in previous research. We used a cross-lagged model to test the hypothesis that social isolation mediated the association between physical mobility and cognitive function among Chinese older adults., Results: The total effects of T1 physical mobility limitations on T3 cognitive function (β = -0.055, bootstrap p < 0.001) were significantly negative. Social isolation played a mediating role among both males and females (male: β = -0.008, bootstrap p = 0.012; female: β = -0.006, bootstrap p = 0.023), demonstrating that the mediating effect of social isolation between physical mobility and cognitive function was not gender specific., Conclusion: This study confirmed that social isolation mediated the association between physical mobility and cognitive function among both Chinese male and female older adults. Introduction: Although social isolation is associated with premature death and somatic and mental diseases, evidence of its long-term effect on sarcopenia is scarce. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between social isolation and possible sarcopenia. Methods: We extracted baseline and 4-year follow-up data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and included participants aged 45 years or above. Social isolation was measured by factors including living alone, marital status, frequency of contact with adult children and friends, and participation in social activity. The change in social isolation from baseline to follow-up was classified into stable, progressive, and regressive groups. Possible sarcopenia was detected using the handgrip strength and five-time chair-stand test. Using mixed-effects logistic regression, we studied the effect of baseline isolation and the change in isolation status on possible sarcopenia at a 4-year follow-up. Results: A total of 5,289 participants aged 45–90 years and without possible sarcopenia at baseline were included. After 4 years, possible sarcopenia was detected in 21.7% (1,146/5,289) of the participants. Compared with the low social isolation group, the middle (OR = 1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16–2.04, p = 0.003) and high social isolation groups (OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.26–2.18, p < 0.001) were associated with a higher risk of possible sarcopenia. Being not married/cohabiting (OR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.19–2.10, p = 0.002), lack of contact with children (OR = 1.86, 95% CI = 1.21–2.85, p = 0.004), and lack of social activities (OR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.04–1.53, p = 0.019) were associated with an increased risk of possible sarcopenia. Compared with the stable social isolation group, the progressive group was associated with a greater risk of possible sarcopenia (OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.17–1.95, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Social isolation is associated with an increased risk of possible sarcopenia. Progressive social isolation further elevates the risk. This study provides one of the first population-based investigations of the longitudinal association between social isolation and sleep difficulty among older adults in China. We analyzed three waves of longitudinal data from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (2014-2018), in which 8456 respondents contributed 16,156 person-year observations. Results from multilevel logistic regression models showed that social isolation was related to a higher risk of sleep difficulty. We also found that socially isolated older adults were more likely to report higher levels of depressive symptoms, a greater prevalence of loneliness and pain, and more chronic diseases compared to their socially integrated counterparts, which in turn increased their risks of sleep difficulty. Moreover, socially isolated older adults with chronic diseases were particularly vulnerable to the risk of sleep difficulty. These findings provide helpful guidance for policymakers and practitioners to design effective intervention strategies to help older adults with sleep problems.

Social ostracism refers to the phenomenon of being excluded from social interactions and not being accepted by society. While previous research has examined its impact on prosocial and antisocial behaviour, few studies have investigated how individuals respond to ostracism by seeking solitude. Therefore, our study aims to explore the association between social ostracism and solitude seeking as well as the potential psychological mechanisms involved. We conducted three studies involving 488 Chinese students (59% female) and found that (a) long-term ostracism experiences positively correlated with preference for solitude, (b) short-term ostracism did not immediately lead to solitude seeking but increased the desire to establish new connections with others and (c) hostile assessment and negative emotions played a chain mediation role in the relationship between social ostracism and solitude seeking. Objective: This survey investigated the relationship between social isolation, depression, nutritional status and quality of life among community-dwelling older adults during COVID-19., Design: This was a cross-sectional survey study., Setting: Communities in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China that have contracted with Renji Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine., Participants: From May to July 2022, 406 community-dwelling older adults were selected by convenience sampling in Shanghai, China., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: The Lubben Social Network Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, 36-item Short Form Health Survey Scale and risk assessment of malnutrition were used in older adults. Mediation models were constructed to determine the mediating role of depression and nutritional status on social isolation and quality of life among older adults., Results: The prevalence of social isolation among older adults in the community was 44.3%. The total social isolation score in community-dwelling older adults was positively associated with the total malnutrition risk and quality of life scores, and negatively associated with depression (p<0.01). Logistic regression demonstrated that living alone, loss of families or friends during COVID-19 and depression were risk factors for social isolation among community-dwelling older adults (p<0.05). Social isolation could directly affect the quality of life (β=0.306). In addition, depression (β=0.334) and nutritional status (β=0.058) had a significant mediating effect on the relationship between social isolation and quality of life., Conclusions: Our findings showed that the prevalence of social isolation among older adults increased during COVID-19. Depression and nutritional status played parallel mediating roles on the effect of social isolation on quality of life. Background: Social isolation is a serious public health issue affecting a significant number of older adults worldwide. However, associations between different dimensions of social isolation and functional health are unclear. We assessed the varied effects of social isolation on health among a nationwide sample of older adults from China., Methods: We assessed social isolation among 5,419 people aged 65 and older who took part in both the 2011 and 2014 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Social isolation includes objective social isolation (kinlessness and lack of social contacts) and subjective social isolation. Four functional health outcomes were examined: self-rated health (SRH), activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), and cognitive function measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We used multivariable regression analyses to examine the associations between social isolation and health outcomes., Results: Older people who never married or who had recently lost a spouse were more likely to report poor SRH (OR=2.44) and difficulty with IADLs (ORs=1.46) than those who were married and lived with a spouse. Older people who never gave birth were less likely to report cognitive impairment (OR=0.53) than those who had living children, while older people who had recently lost a child were more likely to report poor SRH than those who had living children (OR=1.32). Older people who had no children visiting were more likely to report difficulty with IADLs than those who had children visiting (OR=1.25). In terms of subjective social isolation, older people who felt lonely were more likely to report poor SRH, cognitive impairment, and difficulty with ADLs and IADLs (ORs=1.19, 1.27, 1.28 and 1.21, respectively), and older people who had no one to talk to were more likely to report poor SRH, cognitive decline, and difficulty with ADLs and IADLs (ORs=2.08, 5.32, 2.06 and 1.98, respectively)., Conclusions: Kinlessness, lack of social contacts and subjective social isolation may impact various dimensions of health in older people. Objectives: To investigate the longitudinal associations between loneliness, social isolation, depression and anxiety in the elderly., Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted among 634 older adults from three districts of Shanghai. Data were collected at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Loneliness and social isolation were measured using the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale and the Lubben Social Network Scale respectively. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the subscales of Depression Anxiety Stress Scales. Logistic regression and negative binomial regression models were used to examine the associations., Results: We found that moderate to severe loneliness at baseline predicted higher depression scores 6 months later (incidence rate ratio (IRR)=1.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.12, 3.53], p=0.019), while higher depression scores at baseline predicted social isolation at follow-up (odds ratio (OR)=1.14, 95% CI [1.03, 1.27], p=0.012). We also observed that higher anxiety scores predicted lower risk of social isolation (OR=0.87, 95% CI [0.77, 0.98], p=0.021). Additionally, persistent loneliness at both timepoints was significantly associated with higher depression scores at follow-up, and persistent social isolation was associated with a greater likelihood of having moderate to severe loneliness and higher depression scores at follow-up., Conclusions: Loneliness was found to be a robust predictor of changes in depressive symptoms. Both persistent loneliness and social isolation were closely associated with depression. Background: Strengthening and maintaining the intrinsic capacity (IC) of the older adults is the key to preventing and delaying disability and promoting healthy aging., Objective: This study explores the relationship between social isolation, perceived stress, health promotion behavior, and IC of the left-behind older adults in rural areas and analyzes the chain mediating effect of perceived stress and health promotion behavior among social isolation and IC., Methods: From March 2021 to May 2022, a multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit participants from rural areas in Heilongjiang Province, China. The data were collected by the simplified version of the Lubben Social Network Scale, the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale, the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-Chinese, and the Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) screening tool. We used the PROCESS macro for SPSS to determine the mediating effect of perceived stress and health-promoting behavior between social isolation and IC., Result: Social isolation score was positively correlated with health-promoting behavior ( r = 0.78, p < 0.01) and IC ( r = 0.67, p < 0.01), whereas it was negatively correlated with perceived stress ( r = -0.63, p < 0.01). Perceived stress was negatively correlated with health-promoting behavior ( r = -0.62, p < 0.01) and IC ( r = -0.43, p < 0.01). The health-promoting behavior and IC were positively correlated ( r = 0.56, p < 0.01). When coronavirus disease (COVID-19) news along with protective health recommendations first came to people's life, such ambiguous information became a public opinion. Performing protective behaviors can be regarded as an approval of the majority opinion as people have to alter their established health positions and practices. So far, the association between public opinion and protective health behaviors is unclear especially in the pandemic context. This study utilized a survey data collected between 1 and 10 April 2020 in Germany (n = 101), Austria (n = 261), Switzerland (n = 26), and China (n = 267). We compared the protective health behaviors between the Chinese and European participants, as well as examined the associations between the protective health behaviors, peer influence, and fear of social isolation. Protective health behaviors were found similar between Chinese and European participants, although being independent from peer influence and fear of social isolation were related to protective health behaviors in the Chinese sample. Our cross-national findings are consistent with previous studies, suggesting that both official and unofficial health communication show stronger influences in Asian populations. Smartphone distraction (SD) is closely related to depression, and the prevalence of SD among nursing students is gradually increasing. However, the potential mechanism of the effect of SD on nursing students' depression is unclear. A total of 574 nursing students were assessed using Smartphone Distraction Scale, Ruminative Response Scale, Hikikomori Questionnaire, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The results indicated that SD among nursing students had an impact on depression through four pathways: (1) SD was positively associated with depression (β = 0.353, P < 0.001); (2) Rumination (β = 0.199, 95% CI: 0.081 to 0.162) and social withdrawal (β = 0.061, 95% CI: 0.034 to 0.091) mediated the effects of SD on depression, respectively; and (3) Rumination and social withdrawal played a chain mediating role in the effect of SD on nursing students' depression (β = 0.027, 95% CI: 0.015 to 0.042). The negative impact of SD on nursing students' mental health should not be taken lightly. Schools and hospitals should guide nursing students to use smartphones correctly, including providing mental health education and professional psychological counselling; families could play a supervisory role and communicate regularly to understand the psychological state and learning of nursing students. Background: Around the globe, various self-quarantine, social distancing, and school-closure policies were implemented during the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) outbreak to reduce disease transmission. Many economies/territories were compelled to consider digital learning modalities. In particular, increased digital learning engagement with digital devices and mounting psychosocial stress due to social isolation are likely to pose adverse risks for youth visual health globally. This study examines the association between increased digital device use, psychosocial stress, and myopia symptoms among Chinese youth during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: This is a retrospective observational population study consisting of 3918 participants enrolled in primary, secondary, and university in China. Participants are recruited through an online survey, which included self-reported information on daily digital device use, psychosocial stress level, condition of visual acuity, and demographic information. We utilize statistical tools including χ 2 test, paired sample t test, and multiple multivariate logistic regression., Results: Each hour increase in digital device use is associated with 1.25 odds ratio OR (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.21-1.30; P  < 0.001) increased risk of developing myopic symptoms, each additional hour of digital device use weighted by near-view and blue-light exposure is associated with OR = 1.04 OR (95% CI = 1.03-1.05; P  < 0.001) and OR = 2.25 (95% CI = 1.94-2.60; P  < 0.001) increased risk respectively. Subjects reporting under stressful conditions are between OR = 1.98 (95% CI = 1.67-2.36; P  < 0.001) and OR = 2.03 (95% CI = 1.71-2.42; P  < 0.001) more likely to develop myopic symptoms, relative to those citing less stress., Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic led to favorable conditions for myopigenic behavioral changes characterized by extended sedentary engagement with digital devices, which are significantly associated with higher risks of myopia incidence.
