The holly Ilex dabieshanensis K. Yao & M. B. Deng, a tree endemic to the Dabieshan Mountains region in China, is a commonly used landscaping plant. Like other crops, its growth is affected by salt stress. The molecular mechanism underlying salt tolerance in holly is still unclear. In this study, we used NaCl treatment and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) at different times to identify the salt stress response genes of holly. A total of 4775 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis of the DEGs obtained at different salt treatment times (3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 h), as compared to control (ck, 0 h), showed that plant hormone signal transduction and carotenoid biosynthesis were highly enriched. The mechanism by which holly responds to salt stress involves many plant hormones, among which the accumulation of abscisic acid (ABA) and its signal transduction may play an important role. In addition, ion homeostasis, osmotic metabolism, accumulation of antioxidant enzymes and nonenzymatic antioxidant compounds, and transcription factors jointly regulate the physiological balance in holly, providing important guarantees for its growth and development under conditions of salt stress. Porphyry-type molybdenum deposits, many of which are in China, supply most of the World's molybdenum. Of particular importance are the molybdenum deposits located in the Qinling-Dabie region that are responsible for more than half of China's molybdenum production. A feature that distinguishes this suite of deposits from the better-known Climax and Endako sub-types of porphyry molybdenum deposits is their formation from CO2-rich magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The role of CO2, if any, in the transport of molybdenum by these fluids, however, is poorly understood. We conducted experiments on the partitioning of molybdenum between H2O-CO2, H2O-NaCl, and H2O-NaCl-CO2 fluids and a felsic melt at 850 °C and 100 and 200 MPa. Here we show that the exsolution of separate (immiscible) brine and vapor leads to the very high brine DMo values needed for efficient extraction of Mo from the magmas forming Dabie-type porphyry molybdenum deposits. Aim: Both excessive intake of sodium and inadequate intake of potassium are associated with blood pressure elevation and subsequent increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease, which accounts for the largest number of deaths in China and worldwide. Low sodium salt, a mixture of mainly sodium chloride and potassium chloride, has shown its great potential as a promising population strategy for sodium intake reduction through multiple large‐scale, multicenter, randomized controlled trials among populations including patients with cardiovascular disease, individuals with and without hypertension, older and younger adults, and men and women in China and other countries. This Guidelines aims to provide expert recommendations for promotion and use of low sodium salt in China, based on the current available scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness, safety, cost‐effectiveness, and acceptability of low sodium salts in various population groups and different application scenarios. The suggestions to key stakeholders are also made. Methods: A working group, an expert review committee and an advisory committee were established to be responsible for formulating the guidelines' scope and key questions to be addressed, for searching, synthesizing, and evaluating research evidence, proposing and reviewing the recommendations. The consensus on the final recommendations was reached using the GRADE grid method. Results: The working group summarized current available evidence of salt substitution regarding its effectiveness, safety, cost‐effectiveness, acceptability, availability, suitability, etc. The Guidelines provided six recommendations advising different populations how to use low sodium salt, four recommendations on the application of low sodium salts in different scenarios, and five suggestions for key stakeholders to promote salt substitution. Conclusion: The first evidence‐based guidelines on promotion and use of low sodium salts covers all key questions in relevance and would play a critical role in prevention and control of hypertension and cardiovascular disease in China and worldwide. Lop Nur is located at the eastmost end of the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang, Northwestern China. This study reviews the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution of underground brine in Lop Nur, based on analytical data from 429 water samples (mainly brine). It is found that in the NE–SW direction, from the periphery to the Luobei sub‐depression, while the hydrochemical type varies from the sodium sulfate subtype (S) to the magnesium sulfate subtype (M), the corresponding brine in the phase diagram transfers from the thenardite phase (Then) area, through the bloedite phase (Blo), epsomite phase (Eps), picromerite phase (Picro), finally reaching the sylvite phase (Syl) area. As for the degree of evolution, the sequence is the periphery < Luobei horizontally and the overlying glauberite brine < the underlying clastic brine vertically. It is concluded that the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the brine have evidently been affected through the effects of evaporation and altitude, as well as the changes in local water circulation in recent years. Boron and chloride isotopic compositions show that the glauberite brine is formed under more arid conditions than the clastic one. The strontium isotopic composition indicates that the Lop Nur brine primarily originates from surface water; however, deep recharge may also be involved in the evolution of the brine, according to previous noble gas studies. It is confirmed that the brine in Lop Nur has become enriched with potassium prior to halite precipitation over the full course of the salt lake's evolution. Based on chemical compositions of brine from drillhole LDK01 and previous lithological studies, the evolution of the salt lake can be divided into three stages and it is inferred that the brine in Lop Nur may have undergone at least two significant concentration‐dilution periods. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting sodium intake to less than 2300 mg/d for adults to reduce cardiovascular and hypertension risk. Salt substitutes could play a role to help individuals reach this goal. This systematic review examined the evidence from randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness and harms of salt substitution for mortality, cardiovascular events, and adverse events after at least 6 months. Background: Salt substitution is a simple yet increasingly promising strategy to improve cardiovascular outcomes. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term effects of salt substitution on cardiovascular outcomes. Data Sources: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, and CINAHL searched from inception to 23 August 2023. Trial registries, citation analysis, and hand-search were also done. Study Selection: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing provision of or advice to use a salt substitute with no intervention or use of regular salt among adults for 6 months or longer in total study duration. Data Extraction: Two authors independently screened articles, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Primary outcomes include mortality, major cardiovascular events (MACE), and adverse events at 6 months or greater. Secondary and post hoc outcomes include blood pressure, cause-specific mortality, and urinary excretion at 6 months or greater. Random-effects meta-analyses were done and certainty of effect estimates were assessed using GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation). Data Synthesis: Of the 16 included RCTs, 8 reported on primary outcomes. Most (n  = 7 of 8) were done in China or Taiwan, 3 were done in residential facilities, and 7 included populations of older age (average 62 years) and/or with higher-than-average cardiovascular risk. In this population, salt substitute may reduce risk for all-cause mortality (6 RCTs; 27 710 participants; rate ratio [RR], 0.88 [95% CI, 0.82 to 0.93]; low certainty) and cardiovascular mortality (4 RCTs; 25 050 participants; RR, 0.83 [CI, 0.73 to 0.95]; low certainty). Salt substitute may result in a slight reduction in MACE (3 RCTs; 23 215 participants; RR, 0.85 [CI, 0.71 to 1.00]; very low certainty), with very low-certainty evidence of serious adverse events (6 RCTs; 27 995 participants; risk ratio, 1.04 [CI, 0.87 to 1.25]) Limitations: The evidence base is dominated by a single, large RCT. Most RCTs were from China or Taiwan and involved participants with higher-than-average cardiovascular risk; therefore, generalizability to other populations is very limited. Conclusion: Salt substitution may reduce all-cause or cardiovascular mortality, but the evidence for reducing cardiovascular events and for not increasing serious adverse events is uncertain, particularly for a Western population. Background: Headache is one of the most common neurological symptoms. Headache disorders are associated with a high global burden of disease. Prior studies indicate that short-to-medium term sodium reduction reduces headache symptom. This study evaluated the effects of long-term reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt on headache frequency and severity in rural China. Methods: The Salt substitute and stroke study (SSaSS) was an open-label cluster-randomised trial in rural China designed to evaluate the effect of salt substitution on mortality and cardiovascular events. Participants included adults with a history of prior stroke and those aged ≥60 years with uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP). Villages were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio either to intervention with salt substitute (75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride by mass) or to control with continued use of regular salt (100% sodium chloride). In this pre-specified analysis, between-group differences in headache frequency and severity were evaluated. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier number: NCT02092090). Results: A total of 20,995 participants were included in the trial (mean age 64.3 years, 51% female, mean follow-up 4.7 years). At final follow-up at the end of the study, headache outcome data including frequency and severity of headaches was available for 16,486 (98%) of 16,823 living participants. Overall, 4454/16,486 (27%) individuals reported having headache: 27.4% in the intervention group (2301/8386) vs 26.6% in the control group (2153/8100) (RR 1.04, 95% CI: 0.93, 1.16, p = 0.48). There was no difference in headache severity between intervention and control groups (p = 0.90). Utilizing voids of insoluble sediment (IS) to store gas is an effective way to improve the efficiency of salt cavern gas storage (SCGS) in China. In this study, a suitable method for predicting the void volume of insoluble sediments (VVISs) is established. This study explores three key factors affecting the VVISs through laboratory experiments. Firstly, in order to make the experimental results more in line with production realities, an analysis of the characteristics of IS in X SCGS was conducted to provide a basis for setting parameters for subsequent experiments. Secondly, experimental setups and methods for measuring the VVISs were designed. Finally, the experimental results were used to predict the VVISs in on-site cavity wells. The results indicate that the higher the proportion of quartz, illite, and large-grain particles in IS, the larger the VVISs. Under different parameters, the VVISs can account for approximately 10–40% of the IS accumulation volume. Different particle sizes can cause a variation of approximately 5–30% in the VVISs, while different mineral compositions can result in a difference of 6–23% in the VVISs. With increasing compaction pressure, the VVISs can decrease by around 5–80%. The prediction of the VVISs in on-site cavity wells shows a high degree of fit with empirical algorithms. In this paper, the numerical calculation model of salt cavern hydrogen storage was established based on the proposed salt cavern hydrogen storage in a bedded salt mine in Jiangsu Province of China. The effects of the minimum internal pressure, maximum internal pressure, average internal pressure and injection-production rate on the stability and tightness of the storage were explored respectively. The results revealed that: (1) The volume shrinkage rate and the plastic zone distribution of the surrounding rock decreased with the increase of the minimum internal pressure, and increased with the decrease of the maximum internal pressure. (2) When the depth of salt cavern is around 1700 m , its long-term stability cannot meet the requirements according to the traditional standard of 0.3–0.8 times of the vertical stress at the cavern roof. It is therefore suggested that the minimum internal pressure of the storage should be increased to 0.4 times of the vertical stress at the cavern roof. (3) The tightness evaluation indexes, including leak range, pore pressure distribution of hydrogen, and cumulative leakage of hydrogen in surrounding rock, all increased with the increase of average pressure and amplitude of internal pressure. (4) Under the same average internal pressure and injection-production frequency, the greater the injection-production rate (the amplitude of internal pressure), the smaller the cumulative leakage rate is. Uridine diphosphate glycosyltransferases (UDP-GTs, UGTs), which are regulated by UGT genes, play a crucial role in glycosylation. In vivo, the activity of UGT genes can affect the availability of metabolites and the rate at which they can be eliminated from the body. UGT genes can exert their regulatory effects through mechanisms such as post-transcriptional modification, substrate subtype specificity, and drug interactions. Phoebe bournei is an economically significant tree species that is endemic to southern China. Despite extensive studies on the UGT gene family in various species, a comprehensive investigation of the UGT family in P. bournei has not been reported. Therefore, we conducted a systematic analysis to identify 156 UGT genes within the entire P. bournei genome, all of which contained the PSPG box. The PbUGT family consists of 14 subfamilies, consistent with Arabidopsis thaliana. We observed varying expression levels of PbUGT genes across different tissues in P. bournei, with the following average expression hierarchy: leaf > stem xylem > stem bark > root xylem > root bark. Covariance analysis revealed stronger covariance between P. bournei and closely related species. In addition, we stressed the seedlings with 10% NaCl and 10% PEG-6000. The PbUGT genes exhibited differential expression under drought and salt stresses, with specific expression patterns observed under each stress condition. Our findings shed light on the transcriptional response of PbUGT factors to drought and salt stresses, thereby establishing a foundation for future investigations into the role of PbUGT transcription factors. Reports on the effects of salt substitution among individuals with normal blood pressure are scarce and controversial. This study sought to assess the effects of a salt substitute (62.5% NaCl, 25% KCl, and 12.5% flavorings) on incidence of hypertension and hypotension among older adults with normal blood pressure. A post hoc analysis was conducted among older adults with normal blood pressure participating in DECIDE-Salt, a large, multicenter, cluster-randomized trial in 48 elderly care facilities for 2 years. We used the frailty survival model to compare risk of incident hypertension and the generalized linear mixed model to compare risk of hypotension episodes. Compared with usual salt group (n = 298), the salt substitute group (n = 313) had a lower hypertension incidence (11.7 vs 24.3 per 100 person-years; adjusted HR: 0.60; 95% CI: 0.39 to 0.92; P = 0.02) but did not increase incidence of hypotension episodes (9.0 vs 9.7 per 100 person-years; P = 0.76). Mean systolic/diastolic blood pressure did not increase from the baseline to the end of intervention in the salt substitute group (mean changes: −0.3 ± 11.9/0.2 ± 7.1 mm Hg) but increased in the usual salt group (7.0 ± 14.3/2.1 ± 7.5 mm Hg), resulting in a net reduction of −8.0 mm Hg (95% CI: −12.4 to –3.7 mm Hg) in systolic and −2.0 mm Hg (95% CI: −4.1 to 0.1 mm Hg) in diastolic blood pressure between intervention groups. In Chinese older adults with normal blood pressure, replacing usual salt with a salt substitute may reduce the incidence of hypertension without increasing hypotension episodes. Soil salinization and alkalization are important abiotic stresses that affect crop growth and yield. Development of salt and alkali tolerant varieties is still dominated by the following conventional breeding method: The salt and alkali tolerant traits from screened germplasm are introduced into elite varieties by means of hybridization and backcrossing. In recent years, the breeding of salt and alkali tolerant rice has also made great progress. For example, the yield of Chao‐You 1000, a two‐line rice hybrid, has reached 12.04 t/ha growing in fields with salinity between 0.2% and 0.6%. This review is an update on the progress of salt and alkali tolerant rice germplasm screening and new salt and alkali tolerant varieties in development. By reviewing the performance of current rice hybrids in China's National Regional Variety Trials of Saline‐Alkali Tolerant Rice, we proposed the technical approach of developing saline–alkali tolerant rice hybrids using the third‐generation hybrid rice technology and furthermore the trend of developing salt and alkali tolerant rice hybrids. Lithium is an important mineral resource and a critical element in the production of lithium batteries, which are currently in high demand. Oilfield brine has significant value as a raw material for lithium extraction. However, it is often considered a byproduct of oil and gas production and is either abandoned or reinjected underground. Exploration and development of oilfield brines can enhance the economic benefits of oilfields and avoid wasting resources. Current methods for predicting brine distribution rely on geological genetic analysis, which results in low accuracy and reliability. To address this issue, we propose a workflow for lithium brine prediction that uses seismic and logging data. We introduced waveform clustering control and used the mapping relationship between seismic waveforms and well-logging curves to predict high-quality reservoirs based on the electrical and physical properties of lithium brine reservoirs. In this workflow, the seismic waveforms were first clustered using singular value decomposition. The sample sets of well-logging properties were established for the target location. The target properties were divided into high- and low-frequency components and predicted separately. The predicted results of the high-quality reservoirs in the study area were verified using elemental content test results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Background: As the prevalence of hypertension increases in China, it is advised to use salt-restriction spoons (SRS) as a lifestyle modification. This study aimed to examine the associations between estimated salt consumption, SRS usage, and the hypertension status in individuals with poorly controlled hypertension. Methods: Data was collected in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, in 2021 using convenience sampling. The analysis involved ordinal logistic regression and restricted cubic splines to assess the relevant factors. Results: The study found that 73.34% of the 1215 patients had uncontrolled blood pressure (BP). Urinary excretion was assessed through the utilization of the Kawasaki, INTERSALT, and Tanaka formulas. The outcomes of these three methodologies revealed average daily sodium excretion values of 208.70 (65.65), 154.78 (33.91), and 162.61 (40.87) mmol, respectively. The prevalence of utilizing SRS was found to be 37.78% in this study. Despite the acknowledgment among SRS users of the potential hazards associated with excessive salt consumption, there exists a contradictory pattern of attitudes and behaviors concerning salt reduction. Among individuals with different levels of salt intake (quartiles 1–4, Q1 vs Q4), there was a positive association between limiting salt and hypertension status when controlling for other variables (Kawasaki adjusted OR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.43–0.79; INTERSALT adjusted OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.41–0.92; Tanaka adjusted OR = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.45–0.92, p < 0.05). Our research also revealed that using or used SRS was a protective factor for blood BP control (adjusted OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.64–0.99, P < 0.05). The restricted cubic spline plots illustrated a monotonic upward relationship between estimated 24-h urinary Na and BP (P-overall association < 0.05; P-non-linear association > 0.05). Conclusions: The use of dietary SRS could result in decrease in daily salt intake for BP control in patients with poorly controlled hypertension. Salt intrusion presents a significant environmental challenge in numerous estuaries around the world, including the Modaomen Estuary in China. This phenomenon typically occurs during the winter season due to reduced freshwater flow. However, an unusual salt intrusion event was observed during the autumn of 2022, coinciding with a typhoon. In this study, we assess the response of the Modaomen to Typhoon Nesat in 2022 and examine the influence of the typhoon on salt intrusion using the Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM). The model results reveal that salt intrusion during a typhoon event is primarily driven by the storm surge and landward Ekman transport. Northeasterly winds enhance stratification between saltwater and freshwater in the Modaomen. Moreover, with the typhoon's passage, the Denglongshan Station recorded a peak salinity of 17 psu, with salt intrusion stretching 29 km further. This escalation led to salinity levels surpassing the local drinking water standard of 0.5 psu across all freshwater intake points in Zhuhai City. Numerical experiments indicate that if Typhoon Nesat had occurred during spring tides, the salt intrusion would have been less severe. Furthermore, the study revealed that regulating the upstream runoff could potentially alleviate the effects of typhoon-induced salt intrusion on ensuring a safe water supply. With a runoff increase to 4000 m3/s, the impact of typhoons on Modaomen's drinking water supply can be managed, and at 6000 m3/s, the influence of typhoons on water supply becomes negligible. Previous studies have primarily focused on salt intrusion in the mainstem of estuaries, whereas those in sub-estuaries (those that branch off their main estuaries) have received less attention. During an extended La Niña event from 2021 to 2022, a sub-estuary (the East River estuary) alongside the Pearl River estuary, China, experienced severe salt intrusions, posing a threat to the freshwater supply in the surrounding area. Observations revealed that maximum salinities in the main estuary typically preceded spring tides, exhibiting significant asymmetry in salinity rise and fall over a fortnightly timescale. In contrast, in the upstream region of the sub-estuary, the variation in salinity was in phase with that of the tidal range, and the rise and fall of the salinity were more symmetrical. Inspired by these observations, we employed idealized numerical models and analytical solutions to investigate the underlying physics behind these behaviors. It was discovered that under normal dry conditions (with a river discharge of 1500 m3s-1 at the head of the main estuary), the river–tide interaction and change in horizontal dispersion accounted for the in-phase relationship between the salinity and tidal range in the upstream region of the sub-estuary. Under extremely dry conditions (i.e., a river discharge of 500 m3s-1 at the head of the main estuary), salinity variations were in phase with those of the tidal range in the middle as well as the upstream region of the sub-estuary. The variation in salinity in the main estuary along with those in salt dispersion and freshwater influx inside the sub-estuary collectively influenced salinity variation in the well-mixed sub-estuary. Soil salinization is a significant obstacle to improving natural grasslands, also affecting farmland productivity. The main distribution area of high salinity soils is primarily located in western China, with a significant presence in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). Siberian wildrye (Elymus sibiricus L.) has been widely used in ecological restoration and reseeding in the QTP, due to its strong salt and alkali resistance. To comprehensively evaluate its salt tolerance and to screen salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive germplasm resources, 50 wild E. sibiricus accessions were assessed through the measurement of several physiological parameters. These included the relative water content (RWC); relative electrical conductivity (REC); malondialdehyde content (MDA); proline content (Pro); and Na+/K+ ratio after 14 days of salt stress treatment (200 mmol L−1 NaCl). Through principal component analysis (PCA) based on both material sources and physiological indexing, it was found that the salt damage score (SDS) and RWC had a strong positive correlation (p < 0.05), in opposition to other indices. The positive indicators were REC, Pro, Na+/K+, and MDA, and the negative indicators were RWC and SDS. Ultimately, by combining the results of the conventional membership function analysis and the weighted membership function analysis based on major components, three salt-tolerant accessions—including XJ013-28, NM021-13 and XJ012-17—and four salt-sensitive accessions, including XZ008-20, QH013-8, XZ009-20, and QH005-35, were screened out. These results could be effectively used to assess the effects of salt stress on Siberian wildrye and its related species. It was discovered that under normal dry condition (with a river discharge of 1500 m3 s-1 at the head of the main estuary), the river-tide interaction and change in horizontal dispersion accounted for the in-phase relationship between the salinity and tidal range in the upstream region of the sub-estuary. Under extremely dry conditions (i.e., a river discharge of 500 m3 s-1 at the head of the main estuary), salinity variations were in- phase with those of the tidal range in the middle as well as the upstream region of the sub-estuary. Salt intrusion in estuaries has been exacerbated by climate change and human activities. Previous studies have primarily focused on salt intrusion in the mainstem of estuaries, whereas those in sub-estuaries (those branch off their main estuaries) have received less attention. During an extended La Niña event from 2021 to 2022, a sub-estuary (the East River estuary alongside the Pearl River Estuary, China, experienced severe salt intrusion, posing a threat to the freshwater supply in the surrounding area. Observations revealed that maximum salinities in the main estuary typically preceded spring tides, exhibiting significant asymmetry in salinity rise and fall over a fortnightly timescale. In contrast, in the upstream region of the sub-estuary, the variation of salinity was in phase with that of the tidal range, and salinity rise and fall exhibited more symmetrical. Inspired by these observations, we employed idealized numerical models and analytical solutions to investigate the underlying physics behind these behaviors. Salt spray is a major environmental issue in coastal areas. Cinnamomum camphora is an economically important tree species that grows in the coastal areas of southern China. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alleviate the detrimental effects of abiotic stress on host plants. However, the mechanism by which AMF mitigates the adverse effects of salt spray on C. camphora remains unclear. A pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where C. camphora seedlings were exposed to four AMF regimes (inoculation with sterilized fungi, with Glomus tortuosum, Funneliformis mosseae, either alone or in combination) and three salt spray regimes (applied with distilled water, 7, and 14 mg NaCl cm−2) in order to investigate the influence on root functional traits and plant growth. The results showed that higher salt spray significantly decreased the K+ uptake, K+/Na+ ratio, N/P ratio, total dry weight, and salinity tolerance of non-mycorrhizal plants by 37.9%, 71%, 27.4%, 12.7%, and 221.3%, respectively, when compared with control plants grown under non-salinity conditions. Mycorrhizal inoculation, particularly with a combination of G. tortuosum and F. mosseae, greatly improved the P uptake, total dry weight, and salinity tolerance of plants grown under higher salt spray conditions by 51.0%, 36.7%, and 130.9%, respectively, when compared with their counterparts. The results show that AMF can alleviate the detrimental effects of salt spray on C. camphora seedlings. Moreover, an enhanced uptake of K+ and P accounted for the resistance of the plants to salt spray. Therefore, pre-inoculation with a combination of G. tortuosum and F. mosseae to improve nutrient acquisition is a potential method of protecting C. camphora plants against salt spray stress in coastal areas. As a multifunctional tree species, Cyclocarya paliurus leaves are rich in bioactive substances with precious healthy values. To meet the huge requirement of C. paliurus leaf production, sites with some environmental stresses would be potential land for developing its plantations due to the limitation of land resources in China. Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are common gas messengers used to alleviate abiotic stress damage, whereas the mechanism of these messengers in regulating salt resistance of C. paliurus still remains unclear. We performed a comprehensive study to reveal the physiological response and molecular regulatory mechanism of C. paliurus seedlings to the application of exogenous NO and H2S under salt stress. The results showed that the application of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) not only maintained the photosynthetic capacity and reduced the loss of leaf biomass, but also promoted endogenous NO synthesis and reduced oxidative damage by activating antioxidant enzyme activity and increasing the content of soluble protein and flavonoids. Moreover, transcriptome and metabolome analysis indicated the expression of genes encoding phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), cytochromeP450 (CYP), chalcone synthase (CHS), dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) and flavonol synthase (FLS) in flavonoid biosynthesis pathway was all up-regulated by the application of NO and H2S. Meanwhile, 15 transcriptional factors (TFs) such as WRKY, ERF, bHLH and HY5 induced by NO were found to regulated the activities of several key enzymes in flavonoid biosynthesis pathway under salt stress, via the constructed co-expression network. Our findings revealed the underlying mechanism of NO and H2S to alleviate salt stress and regulate flavonoid biosynthesis, which provides a theoretical basis for establishing C. paliurus plantations in the salt stress areas. Using high-precision CT scanning equipment, two series of tests on frost and salt weathering were conducted to investigate the characteristics of pore change in tuff. Experiments on frost and salt aging were performed with pieces of tuff from the same area of southeast China. One set of tuff samples was soaked in saturated sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate solutions for 60 days. Another set of tuff samples were subjected to 60 freeze–thaw cycles after being submerged in saturated sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate solutions for 48 h. Our study demonstrates that processes such as salt erosion and freeze–thaw affect the pore evolution of tuffs significantly. Tuff lost 1.56% of its mass after being submerged in magnesium sulfate solutions for 60 days, while tuff submerged in sodium sulfate solutions gained a negative 0.33% of its mass. After 60 freeze–thaw cycles, the mass loss of tuff samples immersed in sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and distilled water solutions was 3.52%, 3.58%, and 3.82%, respectively. The average porosity of the magnesium sulfate and sodium sulfate test groups increased by 6.59% and 4.14%, respectively, when the number of days of salt erosion was extended from 10 to 60 days. The average porosity of tuff samples immersed in magnesium persulfate and sodium sulfate solutions increased by 2.25% and 2.18%, respectively, as the number of freeze–thaw cycles went from 10 to 60. Hydrogen is regarded as one of the most important energy sources for the future. Safe, large-scale storage of hydrogen contributes to the commercial development of the hydrogen industry. Use of bedded salt caverns for natural gas storage in China provides a new option for underground hydrogen storage (UHS). In this study, the physical properties of multicomponent gases in UHS and salt rock are reviewed and discussed, along with the flow of hydrogen in the surrounding salt rock. Mathematical models of the two-phase multicomponent flow of the gas–brine system in the UHS were established. A numerical model of a simplified elliptical salt cavern was built to simulate the migration of the gas–brine system in the UHS. The hydrogen tightness of the UHS was evaluated through simulation with different storage strategies, salt rock and interlayer permeabilities, and gas components. The results indicate that: (1) Cyclic injection and withdrawal facilitate hydrogen leakage, which is accelerated by increasing the frequency. (2) The huff-n-puff of hydrogen gas in the injection and withdrawal cycles forces the gas into pore space and enhances the relative permeability of the gas phase. The migration of hydrogen and brine weakens the hydrogen tightness. Brine saturation is an important index for evaluating the hydrogen tightness of UHS. (3) The leakage rate of UHS increases with an increase in the permeability of the salt rock and interlayer and the total thickness of the interlayers. The average permeability K wa weighted by the thickness of layers for the bedded salt formation is proposed to integrate three variables to facilitate field application of the simulation results. The critical K wa is less than 3.02 × 10−17 m2 if the recommended annual hydrogen leakage rate is less than 1%. (4) The difference between hydrogen and other gas species is another important factor in the leakage rate and should be considered. Sichuan Basin of China is a typical underground brine enrichment area. In order to develop and utilize the brine resource, it is necessary to study the phase equilibria and phase diagram of brine systems. In this work, the phase equilibria of the quinary system NaCl + KCl + MgCl2 + SrCl2 + H2O (saturated with NaCl) at 308.2 K of the underground brines in Sichuan Basin are measured experimentally by isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The phase diagram, water content diagram, and sodium chloride content change diagram of the quinary system with NaCl saturated are also drawn, respectively. The results show that the phase diagram of the quinary system contains three invariant points, seven isothermal solubility curves, and five solid crystal zones at 308.2 K. In the phase diagram, the KCl crystallization area is the largest, followed by SrCl2·6H2O, KCl·MgCl2·6H2O, and SrCl2·2H2O, while MgCl2·6H2O has the smallest crystallization area. Magnesium chloride in the quinary system has the largest solubility and has strong salting‐out effect on other salts. Furthermore, the unreported mixed ion interaction parameters θMg, Sr and ΨMg, Sr, Cl of Pitzer model are fitted, respectively. Consequently, the solubilities of the quinary system NaCl + KCl + MgCl2 + SrCl2 + H2O at 308.2 K are predicted using the Pitzer model, and the calculated phase diagram at 308.2 K is also plotted in detail. The predicted solubilities of the quinary system were in good agreement with the experimental solubilities. Finally, the study on the phase equilibrium of the quinary system can provide phase equilibrium data for the development and utilization of liquid mineral resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important horticultural crop worldwide. Sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) in the surface soil are the major limiting factors in coastal areas of Shandong Province in China. Therefore, to understand the mechanism used by cucumber to adapt to sodium chloride (NaCl), we analyzed the phenotypic and physiological indicators of eighteen cucumber germplasms after three days under 100 and 150 mM NaCl treatment. A cluster analysis revealed that eighteen germplasms could be divided into five groups based on their physiological indicators. The first three groups consisted of seven salt-tolerant and medium salt-tolerant germplasms, including HLT1128h, Zhenni, and MC2065. The two remaining groups consisted of five medium salt-sensitive germplasms, including DM26h and M1-2-h-10, and six salt-sensitive germplasms including M1XT and 228. A principal component analysis revealed that the trend of comprehensive scores was consistent with the segmental cluster analysis and survival rates of cucumber seedlings. Overall, the phenotype, comprehensive survival rate, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis revealed that the salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive germplasms were Zhenni, F11-15, MC2065, M1XT, M1-2-h-10, and DM26h. This article studies the Sino-Foreign Salt Inspectorate, which was imposed upon a weak Chinese government by an international consortium from 1913 till 1949. The founder of the Salt Inspectorate was Sir Richard Dane, a high-level civil servant in the Indian Civil Service with long experience in salt tax administration in India. This article charts the development of the Salt Inspectorate, considering how it maintained its organisational integrity in a hostile policy environment through core strategies of simplification, bureaucratisation and insulation. The Salt Inspectorate stands as an exemplar of liberal imperial order in its replication of the Indian Civil Service and classic British liberal ideals of political economy, operating in the midst of a dangerous policy environment of civil war, rising nationalism and foreign invasion. In recent years, noticeable subsidence depressions have occurred along the coastal zone of the Yellow River Delta. In some coastal areas, the average annual subsidence varies from tens of millimeters to hundreds of millimeters. Although some studies have discovered a significant land subsidence funnel in the coastal zone of the Yellow River Delta, it has rarely been reported in recent years. Using Sentinel-1A/1B images from the last five years and permanent scatterers interferometric synthetic aperture radar technology, we found a typical subsidence bowl in the northeastern part of the delta, with a cumulative settlement of nearly 1 m over five years. In addition, we used the approach of soil mechanics to simulate the settlement of confined brine layers with different thicknesses under drainage conditions. We found that the 15 m thick confined aquifer can produce 1 m of settlement for every 15% decrease in water content. The simulation results explain the large settlement of the brine industrial area. This study can provide guidance for brine mining in the future. If we continue to overexploit underground brine, there will be more severe land subsidence in the delta in the future. The seismic records in the Cambrian southwest depression of the Tarim Basin exhibit discrepancies when compared to the actual geological setting, which is caused by the presence of multiples. Despite the application of the Radon transform, multiple interferences persist beneath the Cambrian salt in the pre-stack data, with significant variations in energy and frequency across the horizontal direction. In addition, other multiple suppression methods are also difficult to handle this problem. To address this issue, we have developed an iterative virtual event internal multiple suppression method for post-stack data. This novel algorithm extends the traditional virtual event internal multiple suppression approach, eliminating the need for data regularization and avoiding the problem of the traditional virtual events method requiring sequential extraction of primaries from relevant layers, which greatly improves computational efficiency and simplifies the implementation steps of the traditional method. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficacy of our method in suppressing internal multiples in both synthetic and field data while preserving primary signals. When applied to real seismic data profiles, the iterative method yields structural characteristics that align more closely with sedimentary laws and reduces disparities in energy and frequency of multiples along the horizontal axis. To identify the propagation mechanisms and the adaptive strategies of oat seedlings exposed to NaCl, NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 the main salts in the soils of the salt-alkali grasslands of the Songnen Plain of China, growth rates and physiological indices of oat seedlings were measured in plants grown in soils with different concentrations (48-144 mmol L-1) of the three salts. The results demonstrated that although oat seedlings survival rates were unaffected by NaCl stress, the tiller number, plant height, and shoot and root dry weights decreased with increasing salt concentration, in the order of Na2CO3>NaHCO3>NaCl. In addition, propagation mechanisms higher concentrations of Na+ accumulated in the shoots and roots of oat seedlings under Na2CO3 stress and NaHCO3 stress than in seedlings under NaCl stress. Reductions in concentrations of K+ were also greater under both Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 stress than NaCl, especially in the roots. Large amounts of Cl- and proline were found to accumulate in oat seedlings, most likely as a strategy for maintaining osmotic and ionic homeostasis under NaCl stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

State monopoly hinders market integration through rising interregional trade barriers. This article provides an account of the market reform on dismantling state monopoly as a natural experiment to investigate the extent to which the reform affects domestic market integration. The state monopoly on China's edible salt market was dismantled by implementing a market reform on the first of January 2017 that terminated the 2000‐year state monopoly on edible salt. Using a set of unique retailing price datasets on edible salt across cities over 10‐day periods every month, we take advantage of the regional and temporal variances of edible salt retailing price between origins of production and other cities to demonstrate market integration nationwide in China. The regression discontinuity estimation is leveraged based on an apparently sharp discontinuity in inter‐city price differences. The results suggest that the dissolution of state monopoly on edible salt market leads to a 3.14 percent decrease in price differences of edible salt between origins and other cities, thus ultimately resulting in the promoted market integration. The results also suggest that the varied iodine contents in edible salt, the market power of state‐owned enterprises and the government‐firm relationships exert promising roles in the influence. This study aims to investigate the potential factors affecting hydraulic fracturing of inter-salt oil shale reservoirs in the Qianjiang Depression, China. Using the inter-salt shale samples, the re-crystallization seepage tests, rock mechanical tests under high temperature and pressure, salt rock creep tests, and direct shear tests were conducted. The testing results suggest several major factors that affect hydraulic fracturing effects in the end. First, the seepage of reservoir and fracturing fluid through hydraulic fractures leads to salt dissolution and crystallization, reducing the effective seepage area of fractures. Second, the salt crystal may block the pore throats or micro fractures after brine invades the shale, decreasing the overall permeability. Third, the low strength and obvious plasticity of inter-salt shale and the strong creep characteristics of salt rock raise difficulties for proppant to effectively support fracture walls, thereby sharply narrowing the hydraulic fracture width. Lastly, the weak interfaces (bedding planes and lithology interfaces) in inter-salt oil shale reservoirs restrict the height of hydraulic fractures, resulting in the disconnection of seepage channels between multiple inter-salt shale reservoirs. Thus, several factors together reduce reservoir permeability, weaken the fluid flow capacity in the fracture, narrow the fracture width, and limit the effective stimulation volume, resulting in weaken the effect hydraulic fracturing. Background: It is unclear whether excessive salt intake accelerates the progression of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). The major objective of this study was to investigate the harmful effect of excessive salt intake on the progression of CSVD in older individuals. Methods: Between May 2007 and November 2010, 423 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 years and older were recruited from the Shandong area, China. Salt intake was estimated using 24-hour urine collection for 7 consecutive days at baseline. Participants were classified into low, mild, moderate and high groups according to the salt intake estimation. CSVD including white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), lacunes, microbleeds and an enlarged perivascular space (EPVS) were determined using brain magnetic resonance imaging. Results: During an average of five years of follow-up, the WMH volume and WMH-to-intracranial ratio were increased in the four groups. However, the increasing trends in the WMH volume and WMH-to-intracranial ratio were significantly faster in the higher salt intake groups compared with the lower salt intake groups (Padjusted < 0.001). The cumulative hazard ratios of new-incident WMHs (defined as those with Fazekas scale scores ≥ 2), new-incident lacunes, microbleeds or an EPVS, as well as composites of CSVD, were respectively 2.47, 2.50, 3.33, 2.70 and 2.89 for the mild group; 3.72, 3.74, 4.66, 4.01 and 4.49 for the moderate group; and 7.39, 5.82, 7.00, 6.40 and 6.61 for the high group, compared with the low group after adjustment for confounders (Padjusted < 0.001). The risk of new-incident WMHs, lacunes, microbleeds or an EPVS, and composites of CSVD was significantly increased with each 1-standard-deviation increment in salt intake (Padjusted < 0.001). In this study, based on X reservoir conditions from Dagang Oilfield, China (temperature: 104 °C, salinity: 26376 mg/L), from the perspective of reducing interfacial tension and emulsification performance, IAPES (isododecyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate) with high temperature and high salt resistance was selected and its performance was evaluated. Finally, physical simulation experiments were conducted to form an in situ viscosity-increasing emulsion to enhance oil displacement efficiency. The experimental results show that when the concentration of IAPES is 0.3 wt%, the ability to reduce the interfacial tension of oil and water is significant and it has good antiaging stability. In addition, the lower the shear rate, the higher the water content, and the worse the emulsion stability. Finally, physical simulation experiments show that IAPES can increase the recovery rate by at least 28% in a larger permeability range. Under the experimental research conditions, the injection process parameters-injection speed (0.4 mL min−1) and injection volume (0.3PV) were optimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Li-enriched oilfield brine is a very important lithium resource. It has gained much attention and become the target of active Li surveys with the growing global demand for Li. However, only little is known about their feature and nature. In the study, hydrochemical data from 155 oil wells tapping the Eocene to Lower Oligocene Qianjiang Formation of the Jianghan Basin, central China indicate that the brines are of the Na–Cl or Na–Ca–Cl type and are characterized by highly variable Li contents of 7.56 to 150 mg/L, with Mg/Li ratios less than 11.65. High Na/Cl and Cl/Br molar ratios indicate distinct contributions from halite dissolution. The Ca excess, Na deficit and Ca/Mg and Ca/Sr molar ratios in the brines imply multiple diagenetic processes, including halite dissolution, dolomitization, albitization and calcite or anhydrite cementation. The lithium contents of these brines have a weak relationship with the salinity and a negative correlation with Cl/Br ratios, possibly indicating that these Qianjiang oilfield brines have been diluted by secondary brines derived from halite dissolution. The spatial distribution patterns for Li and B concentrations of the brines are different from those for salinity and Br contents and show a geographic pattern, indicating that Li enrichment in the Qianjiang brines is likely connected with geothermal sources associated with volcanic activity. (1) Background: Salt stress is an abiotic factor that limits maize yield and quality. A highly salt-tolerance inbred AS5 and a salt-sensitive inbred NX420 collected from Ningxia Province, China, were used to identify new genes for modulating salt resistance in maize. (2) Methods: To understand the different molecular bases of salt tolerance in AS5 and NX420, we performed BSA-seq using an F2 population for two extreme bulks derived from the cross between AS5 and NX420. Transcriptomic analysis was also conducted for AS5 and NX420 at the seedling stage after treatment with 150 mM of NaCl for 14 days. (3) Results: AS5 had a higher biomass and lower Na+ content than NX420 in the seedling stage after treatment with 150 mM NaCl for 14 days. One hundred and six candidate regions for salt tolerance were mapped on all of the chromosomes through BSA-seq using F2 in an extreme population. Based on the polymorphisms identified between both parents, we detected 77 genes. A large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at the seedling stage under salt stress between these two inbred lines were detected using transcriptome sequencing. GO analysis indicated that 925 and 686 genes were significantly enriched in the integral component of the membrane of AS5 and NX420, respectively. Among these results, two and four DEGs were identified as overlapping in these two inbred lines using BSA-seq and transcriptomic analysis, respectively. Two genes (Zm00001d053925 and Zm00001d037181) were detected in both AS5 and NX420; the transcription level of Zm00001d053925 was induced to be significantly higher in AS5 than in NX420 (41.99 times versus 6.06 times after 150 mM of NaCl treatment for 48 h), while the expression of Zm00001d037181 showed no significant difference upon salt treatment in both lines. The functional annotation of the new candidate genes showed that it was an unknown function protein. (4) Conclusions: Zm00001d053925 is a new functional gene responding to salt stress in the seedling stage, which provides an important genetic resource for salt-tolerant maize breeding. As a highly valued and multiple function tree species, the leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus are enriched in diverse bioactive substances with healthy function. To meet the requirement for its leaf production and medical use, the land with salt stress would be a potential resource for developing C. paliurus plantations due to the limitation of land resources in China. The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor protein family, the second largest protein family in plants, has been found to play essential roles in the response to multiple abiotic stresses, especially salt stress. However, the bHLH gene family in C.paliurus has not been investigated. In this study, 159 CpbHLH genes were successfully identified from the whole-genome sequence data, and were classified into 26 subfamilies. Meanwhile, the 159 members were also analyzed from the aspects of protein sequences alignment, evolution, motif prediction, promoter cis-acting elements analysis and DNA binding ability. Based on transcriptome profiling under a hydroponic experiment with four salt concentrations (0%, 0.15%, 0.3%, and 0.45% NaCl), 9 significantly up- or down-regulated genes were screened, while 3 genes associated with salt response were selected in term of the GO annotation results. Totally 12 candidate genes were selected in response to salt stress. Moreover, based on expression analysis of the 12 candidate genes sampled from a pot experiment with three salt concentrations (0%, 0.2% and 0.4% NaCl), CpbHLH36/68/146 were further verified to be involved in the regulation of salt tolerance genes, which is also confirmed by protein interaction network analysis. This study was the first analysis of the transcription factor family at the genome-wide level of C. paliurus, and our findings would not only provide insight into the function of the CpbHLH gene family members involved in salt stress but also drive progress in genetic improvement for the salt tolerance of C. paliurus. Cerasus humilis (Bge.) Sok (C. humilis) is a wild fruit tree endemic to China. It mainly grows on saline land and often suffers from osmotic stress. Biophotons are ultraweak luminescence (UWL) radiations that are closely related to various biological processes and activities. UWL emission essentially originates from the oxidative stress process of organisms. However, it is unclear whether UWL production is related to the redox state of chloroplasts. Therefore, to understand the UWL emission mechanism in plants, we studied the effect of salt stress on the photosystem (PS) activity and UWL of C. humilis leaves and analyzed the correlation between PS activity and UWL. The results showed that salt stress severely inhibited the PS activity of C. humilis leaves and oxygen-evolving complex, damaged the integrity of the thylakoid membrane, decreased the photochemical efficiency of PSII, and hindered the Q A -Q B electron transfer. At the same time, the intensity of UWL also decreased. Further, correlation analyses of PS activity indices and UWL showed that UWL was significantly correlated with main parameters of photosystem activity such as PSII the maximum photochemical efficiency (F v /F m) and photosynthetic performance index based on absorbed light energy (PI ABS), as well as the absorption, capture, and transfer of energy in the unit reaction center and unit leaf section. Catalpa bungei is an economically important tree with high-quality wood, which is highly ornamentally valuable in China. Salinity is one of the major constraints restricting the growth of the C. bungei. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the salt stress response remains unknown in C. bungei. In our previous study, a novel WRKY transcription factor gene CbWRKY27 was isolated using association mapping based on the transcriptome database of Catalpa Yuqiu1. In this study, CbWRKY27 was found to function as a transcriptional activator in the nucleus. The transcription of CbWRKY27 was inhibited under salt stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) but was induced after abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. CbWRKY27-overexpression plants showed decreased tolerance to salt stress compared to wild type while enhancing sensitivity to ABA-regulated lateral root length. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) studies showed that the transcript levels of the ABA biosynthesis gene (NCED3), signaling genes (ABI3 and ABI5), and responsive genes (RD29B and RD22) were greatly increased in CbWRKY27-overexpression plants under salt stress. Under salt treatment, CbWRKY27-overexpression plants disturbed ROS homeostasis by repressing antioxidant enzymes and enhancing the production of O2− and H2O2 through down-regulation of ROS-scavenging-related genes (APX, SOD, and PER57). The potassium transporter group of the HAK/KUP/KT (high-affinity K+)/KUP (K+ uptake)/KT (K+ transporter) family plays a crucial role in plant growth and development as well as in environmental adaptation such as tolerance to salt stress. HAK/KUP/KT genes and their functions have been characterized for a number of plant species, but they remain unknown for Casuarina equisetifolia, an important tree species for coastal protection in southern China and many other countries. In this study, 25 HAK genes were identified in the C. equisetifolia genome. Their gene structure, conserved motif, phylogeny, and expression were comprehensively and systematically analyzed to understand their functions. All HAK genes were relatively conserved and could be divided into four clusters. The expression level of two particular genes, CeqHAK11 and CeqHAK6, increased significantly with the duration of salt treatment. To further elucidated their function in response to salt stress, subcellular localization, and their functional analysis were developed. Results revealed that CeqHAK11 and CeqHAK6 were localized on the plasma membrane, which mainly mediated high-affinity K+ uptake. Overexpression of CeqHAK6 or CeqHAK11 in Arabidopsis showed higher germination and survival rates and longer root length than wild-type (WT) under salt stress, suggesting that both genes improve tolerance to salt stress. Moreover, CeqHAK6 and CeqHAK11 improved their ability to tolerate salt stress by increasing the K+/Na+ ratio and antioxidant enzyme activities (CAT, POD, and SOD), and decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Consequently, CeqHAK6 and CeqHAK11 were verified as potassium transport proteins and could be applied for further molecular breeding for salt tolerance in C. equisetifolia or other crops to increasing salt tolerance. Taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy (TIPN) is a debilitating adverse effect of cancer treatments with taxanes which may require a reduction or discontinuation chemotherapy and affect clinical and survival outcomes. A number of factors have contributed to the increasing prevalence of TIPN. Nonetheless, limited knowledge exists of potential prechemotherapy blood-based biochemical factors associated with TIPN development. We recruited breast cancer patients at seven cancer institutions in China. Participants aged 18 years or older with stage I to III breast cancer who scheduled to undergo primary neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy with taxanes were eligible. Eligible patients underwent patient-reported neuropathy assessments using the EORTC-CIPN20 questionnaire. Patients completed the questionnaire before commencing treatment and after every cycle. For every patient, we selected the highest TIPN toxicity score for analysis since the first cycle. The posttreatment TIPN severity was compared with blood-based biochemical factors within 30 days before commencing treatment. Independent samples t tests, Mann-Whitney U tests and linear regression were used to identify blood-based and clinical associations with TIPN development. The study included 873 breast cancer participants who received paclitaxel, docetaxel or nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab)-paclitaxel. In the whole cohort, factors associated with higher TIPN toxicity scores were higher cumulative chemotherapy dose (β = 0.005; 95% CI, 0.004 to 0.006; P <.001), lower sodium ions (β = −0.24; 95% CI, −0.39 to −0.09; P =.002) and higher chloride ions (β = 0.30; 95% CI, 0.16 to 0.44; P <.001). Simulated high salt organic wastewater samples with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the salt concentration of 10,000 mg/L were prepared in the experiments. Two combined freezing-based methods were employed to deal with the simulated wastewater, which are the freezing and centrifugal method (FCM), and the freezing, gravity-induced and centrifugal method (FGCM). The salt removal efficiency, the COD removal efficiency and the ice recovery rate of the treated ice samples were investigated. The results showed that for FCM experiments, more than 70% of organic matter and salt content can be removed rapidly under the rotation rate of 2,000 rpm and the centrifugation duration of 2 min. Extending the centrifugation duration or further increasing the rotation rate can’t improve COD and salt removal efficiencies greatly. For FGCM experiments, the COD and salt removal efficiencies increase with the concentrated wastewater drainage proportion or increase slightly in lower ambient temperature. The salt concentration and COD of the treated ice samples can meet the requirement of China’s wastewater discharge standards under certain gravity-induced wastewater drainage proportion or ambient temperature. Gypsum/salt beds are widely developed in petroliferous basins across the world. Most basins with gypsum/salt beds have been proven to host abundant hydrocarbon resources. Previous studies on the effects of gypsum/salt beds on hydrocarbon reservoirs primarily focused on their excellent sealing property as cap rocks. However, an increasing number of exploration discoveries have shown that gypsum/salt beds have the potential to promote the formation of high-quality source rocks and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Gypsum/salt beds influence the generation, preservation and accumulation of hydrocarbons. Based on the systematic analysis of the generation of hydrocarbons in global gypsum/saltbearing sequences, the study discussed the control of gypsum/salt beds on play elements, and explore the relationship between the development of gypsum/salt beds and global large- and medium-scale hydrocarbon reservoirs. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between typical gypsum/saltbearing sequences and their hydrocarbon generation potentials in China. In-depth analysis shows three patterns in terms of the spatial superimposition of gypsum/salt beds and source rocks, that is, postsalt pattern, inter-salt pattern and pre-salt pattern. Underground salt caverns are widely used in large-scale energy storage, such as natural gas, compressed air, oil, and hydrogen. In order to quickly build large-scale natural gas reserves, an unusual building method was established. The method involves using the existing salt caverns left over from solution mining of salt to build energy storages. In 2007, it was first applied to Jintan Natural Gas Storage of China. Based on this successful project, several existing salt caverns were screened to build energy storages in China. Engineering experience indicates that the key to successful reusing is how to select the most suitable of the numerous available caverns and confirm it. This paper summarizes and reviews relevant theories and testing methods, including: (1) the primary selection principle for using existing salt caverns to build energy storage, (2) the testing method and evaluation theory of tightness of the existing salt cavern, and (3) the typical project case of using the existing salt caverns to build energy storage in China. From the practical application results, the selection principle proposed in this paper can quickly screen available existing salt caverns with energy storage potential, and the brine injection method can effectively evaluate their tightness. The Lanping–Simao Basin is located on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, China, and contains massive evaporites. The origin of evaporites in the basin has been hotly debated because of the strong transformation by tectonic movement. Forty halite samples from borehole MK‐3 in the Mengyejing area of the basin were collected and analyzed using XRD, Cl‐Sr isotopes and chemical compositions to trace the origin of the evaporites in the basin. The Br × 103/Cl ratios of the halite samples are between 0 and 0.55, most of which are synchronized with the law of seawater evaporation and at the stage of halite precipitation from seawater, indicating that the evaporites are mainly of marine origin. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.707489 to 0.711279; after correction, the 87Sr/86Sr 145 Ma ratios range from 0.704721 to 0.707611, equivalent with the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of seawater at 145 Ma, indicating a marine origin. The decay of 87Rb in the evaporite during deposition, change of the depositional environment and the unsealed environment at a later period resulted in the present 87Sr/86Sr ratios of some samples being high. The δ37Cl value compositions range from –0.38‰ to 0.83‰, which is consistent with the δ37Cl value composition of the world marine halite (–0.6‰ to 0.4‰), further confirming that seawater is the main origin. In addition, the high δ37Cl value of some samples at the boundary of the upper and lower evaporite layers might be related to the influence of δ37Cl‐rich brine and the incomplete dissolution of the halite. Highlights: What are the main findings? Nitrogen fertilizer (urea) application ameliorated salt damage and promoted the growth of wheat; 270 kg/ha nitrogen was the optimal dosage for wheat cultivation in soils of typical agricultural areas of the Yellow River delta. What is the implication of the main finding? The finding is useful for rational utilization of nitrogen fertilizer and coastal saline agriculture development. Salt-affected soils is an important soil resource. Understanding fertilizer and salinity interaction are of great economic importance for improving crop yield and fertilizer use efficiency. A pot experiment was carried out to study the application of nitrogen (N) for ameliorating salt stress in wheat grown in the coastal saline soil of the Yellow River delta. Several controlling levels of salinity and nitrogen (0.7, 1.7, 2.7 g/kg, and 135, 270, and 405 kg/ha) were designed in a pot experiment in a stable water content state to investigate the N and salt interaction on soil properties and winter wheat growth characteristics. The results showed that the dry weight of winter wheat was promoted by salinity in the early growth stage (20 days), then it was gradually inhibited by nitrogen fertilizer. When winter wheat was grown by 54 days, the N and salinity had significant effects on the biomass of winter wheat. The nitrogen content of wheat shoot and root was mainly affected by N addition usage, and the largest value was obtained in 270 kg/ha N dosage treatments. The higher the salt content existed in the soil, the lower the growth rate shown in wheat cultivation. Under saline conditions, the N fertilizer application amount should be controlled to no more than 270 kg/ha, so that it could greatly promote wheat growth. Identifying interactions among river water, groundwater and salt lake brine is important for sustainable exploitation of brine mineral resources. In this study, we investigated the water exchange rate in dry and wet seasons, and assessed the influence of seasonal water exchange on brine concentration and crystallization process in the Nalenggele (NLGL) catchment of Qaidam Basin, China. The results show that the surface water infiltration and groundwater recharge rates in the wet season were 2.81 × 10−3 and 1.15 × 10−3 m3/(s·m) in upstream, 1.63 × 10−2 and 1.53 × 10−2 m3/(s·m) in midstream, and 2.83 × 10−4 and 6.82 × 10−5 m3/(s·m) in downstream, respectively; while their counterparts in the dry season were 9.81 × 10−4 and 5.05 × 10−4 m3/(s·m) in upstream, and 8.34 × 10−3 and 7.78 × 10−3 m3/(s·m) in midstream, respectively. The water exchange strongly influenced brine concentration and crystallinzation process, with brine chemistry belonging to 3K2SO4·Na2SO4 and KCl types in wet and dry seasons, respectively. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is an important source of livestock feed used to address the imbalance between livestock and forage production in China. However, much of the grasslands have a high salt content, which seriously affects the quality and yield of alfalfa. There are many kinds of fungi that play an important role in alfalfa growth and nutrient synthesis. The response of the fungi of alfalfa to salinity is poorly understood. In this study, the physiological characteristics and the fungal community composition of alfalfa under different salt stress conditions were investigated. Salt stress had a great impact on the physiological characteristics and the fungal community composition of alfalfa. The activity of invertase increased significantly under salt stress; the content of water and starch decreased; and the content of crude protein (CP) and soluble sugar increased under mild salt stress. With the increase in salt stress, the relative abundance of Ascomycetes increased, while the relative abundance of basidiomycetes decreased. This showed that the changes in the fungal community may be related to the adaptability of alfalfa plants to salt stress. These findings contribute to a better understanding of alfalfa physiological characteristics and nutrient synthesis under salt stress and deepen our understanding of alfalfa–fungi interactions in the saline soil environment of grasslands. Lithium is becoming one of the most eye-catching metal elements in modern industry, mainly because of its crucial role in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries. The demand for lithium in the new energy market is burgeoning significantly, while enormous lithium resources reserved in salt lakes in northwest China are not exploited effectively, due to the high Mg/Li mass ratio. Although the TBP extraction system has been applied in lithium extraction from salt lake brines, there are still some problems to be solved, such as its high solubility, easy degradation, and so on. In this work, a novel low dissolution loss extraction system was developed, with DEHEHP and FeCl 3 serving as extractant and co-extractant, respectively. A real brine from Da Qaidam Lake was used to prove its practicality and effectiveness. After studying the detailed conditions of each process, a whole countercurrent process was performed, including eight stages of extraction, two stages of scrubbing, three stages of stripping, and regeneration. It was found that 99.4% of Li+ was successfully recovered from the brine, and the stripping liquor contained 22.74 g/L Li+, 0.51 g/L Mg2+, and 3.16 g/L B. The concentration of Li+ increased approximately 20-fold while the Mg/Li mass ratio decreased by a factor of 3900, from real brine to stripping liquor. High-purity (>98.5%) lithium carbonate products were prepared from the stripping liquor by precipitation. The dissolution loss of the organic phase in the raffinate was only 22.5 ppm, much lower than published works. Finally, the mechanism of extraction and co-extraction were systematically studied and the structure of the complex formed during extraction was revealed as LiFeCl 4 ·2DEHEHP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concrete is a commonly utilized material in the construction of infrastructure in Northwest China. However, its durability in saline environments is hindered by its susceptibility to salt and freeze-thaw erosion. By incorporating basalt fibers (BF), reticulated polypropylene fibers (RP), and calcium carbonate whiskers (CW) into concrete, the crack resistance of the material can be enhanced from the micro to macro level. Previous research has yet to thoroughly examine the enduring erosion resistance of CW-BF-RP concrete (CBPC) over extended periods amidst diverse salt-freezing conditions. Additionally, the precise mechanism through which CW impacts the deterioration of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between fibers and the cement matrix remains incompletely elucidated. This study examines the variability in compressive strength, mass loss, and damage degree of CBPC when exposed to various types of salts (sulfate/chloride) and erosion conditions of different concentrations. And the corrosion mechanism of CBPC in different freeze-thaw conditions was revealed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Thermogravimetry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The findings suggest that the strength reduction rate, mass loss rate, and damage degree of CBPC increase with the rise in salt concentration and freeze-thaw cycles. The three indicators in chloride salt conditions are significantly higher than FW, with values of 78.64%, 223.6%, and 309.0%, respectively, compared to 47.63%, 155.4%, and 162.4% in S-3, indicating that CBPC exhibits greater resistance to sulfate salts than chloride salts. The consumption of CH is a key factor in the occurrence of AFt and Friedel's salt and pore degradation. Concrete pore degradation between 3.25μm and 6.81μm leads to rapid disintegration, with detachment of the mortar occurring when the pore size reaches 31.95μm. CW maintains its integrity in sulfate salt and FW conditions, but experiences severe corrosion in chloride salt. At this point, the maximum ITZ of 7.5 μm for BF is less than that of 22.8 μm for RP, indicating that the bonding of BF to the matrix is stronger than that of RP. The longitudinal height difference of fiber-cement aggregate ITZ in chloride conditions ranges from 42.8 nm to 59.8 nm, creating water channels of 5.70μm to 6.91μm, thereby weakening the adhesion of the matrix. Finally, a Wiener stochastic model is established for life prediction under different salt-freezing conditions, with the maximum life expectancy in sulfate conditions being 1.26–1.86 times that in chloride conditions. Drip irrigation under mulch is a widely used technique in the arid region of northwest China. The partially mulched soil and the bare strips between mulched areas may complicate the migration of water, salt, and heat in soils, and cause lateral salt accumulation on bare soil surfaces. For investigating hydrothermal dynamics and salt distribution patterns under such circumstances, tank experiments with drip irrigation under plastic film on partially mulched soil were conducted under two intensities of drip irrigation (i.e., low (W1) and high (W2)) with the same total irrigation amount. The spatial distributions of soil water, temperature, and electrical conductivity were monitored accordingly. The two-dimensional (2D) model of soil water, salt, and heat transport under drip irrigation and partially mulched soil conditions was established using HYDRUS-2D, and kinetic adsorption during salt migration was considered. The results of the experiments showed that the uneven distribution of the hydrothermal state led to the accumulation of salt on the un-mulched soil surface. Water migrated from where the dripper was located, and heat accumulated mainly in the mulched soil. HYDRUS-2D matched reasonably well with the observed data, with an R 2 higher than 0.54. Under the partially mulched conditions, lower intensity of drip irrigation (W1) show higher desalination efficiency in root zones, with less even lateral salt distribution. Scenario simulations further demonstrated that a larger total irrigation amount would result in a larger desalination zone, and drip irrigations with appropriate incremental intensity could improve salt leaching in the root zone with increased lateral migration of water.
