The article focuses on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, China. It notes that the movement has no formal dialogue with the Chinese government since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in 1997. The massive protest rally initiated on July 1, 2003 and the political turmoil have resulted to exacerbation of the Chinese leadership's insecurity. The survival of the movement lies on the maintenance of the rule of law as well as the checks and balances.

Maintaining normal thyroid function is crucial in pregnancy, yet thyroid dysfunction and the presence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) affect 0.5% to 18% of pregnant women. Here, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of eight thyroid traits, including two thyroid-related hormones, four thyroid dysfunctions, and two thyroid autoimmunity measurements among 85,421 Chinese pregnant women to investigate the genetic basis of thyroid function during pregnancy. Our study identified 176 genetic loci, including 125 previously unknown genome-wide associations. Joint epidemiological and Mendelian randomization analyses revealed significant associations between the gestational thyroid phenotypes and gestational complications, birth outcomes, and later-age health outcomes. Specifically, genetically elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels during pregnancy correlated with lower glycemic levels, reduced blood pressure, and longer gestational duration. Additionally, TPOAb and thyroid functions during pregnancy share genetic correlations with later-age thyroid and cardiac disorders. Exosomes, which are extracellular vesicles secreted and released from specific cells, exist widely in cell culture supernatants and various body fluids. This study aimed to analyze the research status of exosomes in stroke, and predict developmental trends via bibliometric analyses. The related literature from January 1, 2008 to January 1, 2024 was searched in the Web of Science Core Collection and 943 articles were retrieved. VOSviewer was used to visualize national cooperation and institutional cooperation. Cluster analysis of keywords and Citespace were applied for mutation analysis. Results: The analysis of 943 works of literature showed that the number of published articles has been steadily increasing since 2015. It is predicted that nearly 211 articles will be published in 2024 and 220 annually by 2028. China has the largest number of publications (473), followed by the United States (234), and Germany (61). The institution with the most publications is Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit, MI). In the keyword cluster "Exosomes and the Mechanism of Stroke: Inflammation and Apoptosis," exosomes and inflammation were identified as hotspots. "Functional recovery" was a new trend in the keyword cluster of "Angiogenesis and Functional Recovery after Stroke." China and the United States are the main forces in this field, and both countries focusing on drug treatments. The studies have been published mainly in China and United States. Background: Dental caries is a multifactorial chronic bacterial infectious disease. Variations in the predisposition of the general population to dental cavities suggest that genetic and immunological factors play significant roles in its pathogenesis. This study aims to explore the impact of the Beta-Defensin 1 ( DEFB1 ) rs11362 polymorphism on caries susceptibility in permanent dentition among the Bai Kuyao and Zhuang ethnic groups in China., Methods: A sample of 754 adolescents aged 12-15 was randomly selected from primary and junior high schools in Nandan County, Guangxi, China. All adolescents underwent clinical examinations, and DNA samples were collected. The genotype of DEFB1 rs11362 was determined using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) typing. The concentration of human β Defensin 1 (hBD-1) protein in saliva was measured using a double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)., Results: The distribution of the DEFB1 rs11362 T allele was lower in the Bai Kuyao group compared to the Zhuang group. The disparity in the rs11362 genotype was statistically significant in the superficial dentin caries subgroup of the Bai Kuyao population ( p = 0.017). Following adjustment for all potential confounding variables, the analysis revealed a heightened risk of superficial dental caries among CT genotype carriers in the Bai Kuyao population under a co-dominant model (odds ratios (OR) = 2.70; 95% confidence intervals (CI) [1.35-5.44]; p = 0.005), and an increased risk among CC genotype carriers in the Bai Kuyao population under a dominant model (OR = 2.35; 95% CI [1.18-4.67]; p = 0.015). A significant difference ( p < 0.05) was noted in the distribution of rs11362 genotypes and salivary hBD-1 levels among the Bai Kuyao group. Salivary hBD-1 levels were notably higher in the CC genotype group (4.12 ± 2.07 ng/mL) compared to both the CT (2.77 ± 1.62 ng/mL) and TT genotype groups (2.32 ± 0.98 ng/mL)., Conclusion: The DEFB1 rs11362 polymorphism showed an association with caries susceptibility in permanent teeth and influenced hBD-1 protein expression in saliva. Consequently, the DEFB1 polymorphism likely represents a concealed risk factor for caries.

Background: The essential mineral elements play important roles in proper growth, development and maintenance of physiological homeostasis of an organism. Women are at greater risk of mineral deficiency during pregnancy. However, the predictors of mineral element levels in pregnant women remain unclear. This study was conducted to determine the urinary levels of calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and selenium (Se) in women during early pregnancy and to explore the predictors of urinary exposure to each mineral element and high co-exposure to mineral element mixture., Methods: 298 pregnant women in first trimester were recruited when they attended antenatal care in a hospital in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. We collected their spot urine samples and questionnaire data on their sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, food and dietary supplement intake, and residential environment. The concentrations of Ca, Fe, Cu, Mn and Se in all urine samples were measured. LASSO regression, multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression were used to analyze the predictors affecting mineral element levels., Results: The geometric means of creatinine-corrected Ca, Fe, Cu, Mn and Se concentrations were 99.37 mg/g, 1.75 µg/g, 8.97 µg/g, 0.16 µg/g and 16.83 µg/g creatinine, respectively. Factors that influenced the concentrations of individual mineral element were as follows: (1) Se and Ca concentrations increased with maternal age; (2) women taking tap water as family drinking water had higher Ca levels and those taking polyunsaturated fatty acids intermittently had higher Cu levels; (3) Fe was adversely related to consumption frequency of barbecued foods; (4) Pregnant women with more frequent consumption of shellfish/shrimp/crab and living near green spaces or parks had higher Mn exposure, and those with higher frequency of meat consumption had lower Mn exposure. In addition, maternal age and the frequency of egg consumption were associated with odds of exposure to a mixture of high Ca, Fe, Cu and Se., Conclusions: The pregnant women in this study had comparable concentrations of urinary Cu and Se but lower concentrations of Ca, Fe and Mn compared with those in other areas. Predictors of urinary mineral elements included maternal age (Se and Ca), type of domestic drinking water (Ca), consumption frequency of barbecued food (Fe), polyunsaturated fatty acid use (Cu), the presence of urban green spaces or parks near the home and frequency of meat and shellfish/shrimp/crab intake (Mn). Introduction: Automated bone age assessment (BAA) is of growing interest because of its accuracy and time efficiency in daily practice. In this study, we validated the clinical applicability of a commercially available artificial intelligence (AI)-powered X-ray bone age analyzer equipped with a deep learning-based automated BAA system and compared its performance with that of the Tanner-Whitehouse 3 (TW-3) method., Methods: Radiographs prospectively collected from 30 centers across various regions in China, including 900 Chinese children and adolescents, were assessed independently by six doctors (three experts and three residents) and an AI analyzer for TW3 radius, ulna, and short bones (RUS) and TW3 carpal bone age. The experts' mean estimates were accepted as the gold standard. The performance of the AI analyzer was compared with that of each resident., Results: For the estimation of TW3-RUS, the AI analyzer had a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.48 ± 0.42. The percentage of patients with an absolute error of < 1.0 years was 86.78%. The MAE was significantly lower than that of rater 1 (0.54 ± 0.49, P = 0.0068); however, it was not significant for rater 2 (0.48 ± 0.48) or rater 3 (0.49 ± 0.46). For TW3 carpal, the AI analyzer had an MAE of 0.48 ± 0.65. The percentage of patients with an absolute error of < 1.0 years was 88.78%. The MAE was significantly lower than that of rater 2 (0.58 ± 0.67, P = 0.0018) and numerically lower for rater 1 (0.54 ± 0.64) and rater 3 (0.50 ± 0.53). These results were consistent for the subgroups according to sex, and differences between the age groups were observed., Conclusion: In this comprehensive validation study conducted in China, an AI-powered X-ray bone age analyzer showed accuracies that matched or exceeded those of doctor raters. Although the relationship between hypertension and hyperuricemia is widely recognized, there is still a relative lack of research on prehypertensive individuals and the individual associations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure with the risk of hyperuricemia. From 2011 to 2016, we conducted a study on 53,323 individuals at Wuhu City Hospital in China. Based on initial blood pressure readings, participants were categorized into normal, prehypertension, or hypertension groups. We used Cox regression to analyze the associations with baseline factors. In subgroup analyses, systolic and diastolic pressures were treated as continuous variables, and their relationship with the risk of hyperuricemia was examined using restricted cubic spline analysis. The risk increased in the prehypertension and hypertension groups compared to the normal blood pressure group, with hazard ratios of 1.192 and 1.350, respectively. For each unit increase in blood pressure, the risk of hyperuricemia rose by 0.8% (systolic) and 0.9% (diastolic), especially when blood pressure levels exceeded 115/78 mmHg. Additionally, we observed that factors such as gender, alcohol consumption habits, obesity, and dyslipidemia might further influence this association. Drawing from the conservation of resources theory, this study proposes that individuals who perceive environmental competitiveness may improve their mental health through their job crafting behaviors at work. Data were collected from 450 full-time Chinese employees using a three-wave time-lagged approach. The results showed that perceived environmental competitiveness is positively correlated with job crafting, and job crafting has a positive relationship with mental health. Moreover, the results indicated that job crafting mediates the relationship between perceived environmental competitiveness and mental health. Additionally, the present study found that work-family conflict plays a moderating role in the relationships among environmental competitiveness, job crafting and mental health. A moderated mediation model was proposed in this study. Sporotrichosis, a mycosis resulting from cutaneous or subcutaneous infection with the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix , has been reported in China, particularly in the northeast region. In this review, we conducted a thorough examination of the recent advancements in sporotrichosis in China, encompassing aspects such as etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment strategies. Within the Chinese context, fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis represents the prevailing clinical manifestation. Fungal culture stands as the gold standard for diagnosing sporotrichosis, while polymerase chain reaction techniques can enhance both the specificity and sensitivity of diagnosis. Besides conventional systemic antifungal agents, alternative modalities such as Chinese herbal medicines, photodynamic therapy and laser therapy show potential efficacy against sporotrichosis.

Objective: This study aims to explore the symptom experiences and psychological feelings of lung cancer patients after radical lobectomy in China., Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using face-to-face semistructured interviews with lung cancer patients who had a radical lobectomy for treatment of their cancer during the convalescence period. Participants (n = 18) were recruited from a general hospital in China, and patients were selected using purposive sampling from September 2021 to February 2022. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and Colaizzi's seven-step method of phenomenology was used. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist was conducted to report the study., Results: Four themes were extracted from the interview data: physiological dimensions (fatigue, cough or sputum, chest tightness and shortness of breath, daily activities affected, sleep disturbance, lack of appetite); psychological dimensions (negative emotion, fear of cancer recurrence, learning to accept reality, strengthened faith and hope); family dimensions (heavy economic burden, perceived family care, improved health management behavior); and social dimensions (perceived support of medical staff, decreased sense of social value and self-identity, changes in social and working style)., Conclusion: Lung cancer patients are still troubled by many problems during the postoperative recovery period. Medical staff should design and implement effective evaluations and targeted interventions for patients' physical and mental health as soon as possible to improve patients' physical and mental health, as well as their quality of life., (© 2024 The Author(s). Biological characteristics of pregnant women during early pregnancy make them susceptible to both poor sleep quality and metal/metalloid exposure. However, the effects of metal(loid) exposure on sleep quality in pregnant women remain unknown and unexplored. We aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to a mixture of metal(loid)s and pregnant women's sleep quality during early pregnancy. We recruited 493 pregnant women in the first trimester from prenatal clinics in Jinan, Shandong Province, China, and collected their spot urine samples. All urine specimens were assessed for eight metal(loid)s: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and mercury (Hg). We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Linear regression, logistic regression, generalized additive models (GAMs), quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were applied to investigate the relationships between metal(loid) exposure and sleep quality. The results from single metal(loid) models, quantile g-computation models, and BKMR models consistently suggested that Fe was positively related to women's sleep quality. Moreover, in the quantile g-computation models, As was the most critical contributor to the negative effects of the metal(loid) mixture on sleep quality. In addition, we found significant As by Fe interaction for scores of PSQI and habitual sleep efficiency, Pb by Fe interaction for PSQI and sleep latency, and Hg by Fe interaction for PSQI, suggesting the interactive effects of As and Fe, Pb and Fe, Hg and Fe on sleep quality and specific sleep components. Our study provided the first-hand evidence of the effects of metal(loid) exposure on pregnant women's sleep quality. Sex-biased gene expression differs across human populations; however, the underlying genetic basis and molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we explore the influence of ancestry on sex differences in the human transcriptome and its genetic effects on a Eurasian admixed population: Uyghurs living in Xinjiang (XJU), by analyzing whole-genome sequencing data and transcriptome data of 90 XJU and 40 unrelated Han Chinese individuals. We identified 302 sex-biased expressed genes and 174 sex-biased cis-expression quantitative loci (sb-cis-eQTLs) in XJU, which were enriched in innate immune-related functions, indicating sex differences in immunity. Notably, approximately one-quarter of the sb-cis-eQTLs showed a strong correlation with ancestry composition; i.e. populations of similar ancestry tended to show similar patterns of sex-biased gene expression. Our analysis further suggested that genetic admixture induced a moderate degree of sex-biased gene expression. Interestingly, analysis of chromosome interactions revealed that the X chromosome acted on autosomal immunity-associated genes, partially explaining the sex-biased phenotypic differences. Our work extends the knowledge of sex-biased gene expression from the perspective of genetic admixture and bridges the gap in the exploration of sex-biased phenotypes shaped by autosome and X-chromosome interactions. Introduction: Dementia and physical disability are serious problems faced by the aging population, and their occurrence and development interact., Methods: Based on data from a national cohort of Chinese people aged 60 years and above from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey from 2011 to 2018, we applied the group-based trajectory model to identify the heterogeneous trajectories of cognitive function and physical disability in participants with different physical disability levels. Next, multinomial logistic regression models were used to explore the factors affecting these trajectories., Results: The cognitive function trajectories of the Chinese older people could be divided into three characteristic groups: those who maintained the highest baseline level of cognitive function, those with a moderate baseline cognitive function and dramatic progression, and those with the worst baseline cognitive function and rapid-slow-rapid progression. The disability trajectories also fell into three characteristic groups: a consistently low baseline disability level, a low initial disability level with rapid development, and a high baseline disability level with rapid development. Compared with those free of physical disability at baseline, a greater proportion of participants who had physical disability at baseline experienced rapid cognitive deterioration. Education, income, type of medical insurance, gender, and marital status were instrumental in the progression of disability and cognitive decline in the participants., Discussion: We suggest that the Chinese government, focusing on the central and western regions and rural areas, should develop education for the older people and increase their level of economic security to slow the rate of cognitive decline and disability among this age group. Importance: Diagnosing solid lesions in the pancreas via endoscopic ultrasonographic (EUS) images is challenging. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to help with such diagnosis, but existing AI models focus solely on a single modality., Objective: To advance the clinical diagnosis of solid lesions in the pancreas through developing a multimodal AI model integrating both clinical information and EUS images., Design, Setting, and Participants: In this randomized crossover trial conducted from January 1 to June 30, 2023, from 4 centers across China, 12 endoscopists of varying levels of expertise were randomly assigned to diagnose solid lesions in the pancreas with or without AI assistance. Endoscopic ultrasonographic images and clinical information of 439 patients from 1 institution who had solid lesions in the pancreas between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2022, were collected to train and validate the joint-AI model, while 189 patients from 3 external institutions were used to evaluate the robustness and generalizability of the model., Intervention: Conventional or AI-assisted diagnosis of solid lesions in the pancreas., Main Outcomes and Measures: In the retrospective dataset, the performance of the joint-AI model was evaluated internally and externally. In the prospective dataset, diagnostic performance of the endoscopists with or without the AI assistance was compared., Results: The retrospective dataset included 628 patients (400 men [63.7%]; mean [SD] age, 57.7 [27.4] years) who underwent EUS procedures. A total of 130 patients (81 men [62.3%]; mean [SD] age, 58.4 [11.7] years) were prospectively recruited for the crossover trial. The area under the curve of the joint-AI model ranged from 0.996 (95% CI, 0.993-0.998) in the internal test dataset to 0.955 (95% CI, 0.940-0.968), 0.924 (95% CI, 0.888-0.955), and 0.976 (95% CI, 0.942-0.995) in the 3 external test datasets, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of novice endoscopists was significantly enhanced with AI assistance (0.69 [95% CI, 0.61-0.76] vs 0.90 [95% CI, 0.83-0.94]; P < .001), and the supplementary interpretability information alleviated the skepticism of the experienced endoscopists., Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized crossover trial of diagnosing solid lesions in the pancreas with or without AI assistance, the joint-AI model demonstrated positive human-AI interaction, which suggested its potential to facilitate a clinical diagnosis. Background: Toxic heavy metal exposure and insufficiency or excess of essential heavy metals may have negative effects on pregnant women's health and fetal growth. To date, the predictors of pregnant women's heavy metal exposure levels remain unclear and vary with different regions. The study intended to explore potential predictors of exposure to heavy metals individually and high co-exposure to heavy metal mixtures., Methods: We recruited 298 pregnant women in first trimester from prenatal clinics in Jinan, Shandong Province, China, and collected spot urine samples and questionnaire data on their demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, consumption of food and dietary supplement, and residential environment. All urine samples were analyzed for seven heavy metals: cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), strontium (Sr), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg)., Results: Factors associated with single heavy metal concentration were as follows: a) urinary As, Sr and Cd increased with women's age respectively; b) pregnant women with higher monthly household income per capita had lower Sr and Mo levels; c) pregnant women with intermittent folic acid supplementation and those not taking tap water as domestic drinking water had lower Sr concentrations; d) Cd was positively linked with consumption frequency of rice; e) Hg was adversely related to consumption frequency of egg and the women who took purified water as domestic drinking water had lower Hg exposure. In addition, pregnant women's age was positively associated with odds of high co-exposure to Co, As, Sr, Mo, Cd and Pb; while those with an educational level of college had lower odds of high exposure to such a metal mixture compared with those whose educational levels were lower than high school., Conclusion: Predictors of single urinary heavy metal concentration included pregnant women's age (As, Sr and Cd), monthly household income per capita (Sr and Mo), folic acid supplementation (Sr), rice consumption frequency (Cd), egg consumption frequency (Hg) and the type of domestic drinking water (Sr and Hg). Background: Researchers have made great efforts to help parents of children with intellectual disabilities overcome the stress and burden. Learning to be resilient is one effective strategy., Aim: This study explores resilience among parents of children with intellectual disabilities and how career burnout and self-regulation relate to parents' resilience in mainland China., Methods: The Burnout Scale, the Self-Regulation Scale and the Resilience Scale were administered to 324 parents of children with intellectual disabilities., Results: Results showed that career burnout significantly negatively influenced resilience (β = -0.269, p = 0.000), while self-regulation significantly positively influenced resilience (β = 0.754, p = 0.000). In addition, self-regulation moderated the relationships between career burnout and resilience (β = 0.176, p = 0.003)., Conclusion: The findings offer valuable insights for enhancing the resilience of parents of children with intellectual disabilities., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

The microbiome plays a crucial role in soil nitrogen (N) cycling and in regulating its bioavailability. However, the functional and genomic information of microorganisms encoding N cycling in response to copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) contamination is largely unknown. Here, metagenomics and genome binning were used to examine microbial N cycling in Cu and Cd co-contaminated red paddy soils collected from a polluted watershed in southern China. The results showed that soil Cu and Cd concentrations induced more drastic changes in microbial N functional and taxonomic traits than soil general properties. Soil Cu and Cd co-contamination stimulated microbial nitrification, denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes mainly by increasing the abundance of Nitrospira (phylum Nitrospirota), while inhibiting N fixation by decreasing the abundance of Desulfobacca. These contrasting changes in microbial N cycling processes suggested a potential risk of N loss in paddy soils. A high-quality genome was identified as belonging to Nitrospirota with the highest abundance in heavily contaminated soils. This novel Nitrospirota strain possessed metabolic capacities for N transformation and metal resistance. Organizational coordination has been regarded as a vital factor to determine the environmental governance efficiency of local authority, while existing empirical studies mainly discuss the vertical decentralization but largely ignore the horizontal cross-departmental interaction within single government. Based on the data of 31 Chinese provinces from 2003 to 2017, this paper uses a panel vector autoregression (PVAR) approach, two-way fixed-effect models and dynamic panel regression with system generalized method of moments estimation (SYS-GMM) to investigate the environmental strategic interaction between two representative departments (finance department and environmental protection department) within local governments. The results indicate, on the whole, their environmental governance strategies show a significantly co-directional coordination. However, the cross-departmental interaction obviously varied in different periods and regions (even showed as conflict sometimes), and was synchronized with the dynamic trade-off between economic and environmental targets of China. Background: Chayote is a high economic crop in the Cucurbitaceae family, playing an important role in food production, disease treatment and the production of degradable materials in industries. Due to the harsh environment, such as high temperature, drought and frost, some chayote resources are gradually disappearing. It is crucial to collect, characterize, and conserve chayote resources. However, the genetic diversity of chayote resources in China has not been studied so far., Results: In this study, we collected 35 individuals of chayote from 14 provinces in China. Subsequently, we found 363,156 SSR motifs from the chayote genome and designed 57 pairs of SSR primers for validation. Out of these, 48 primer pairs successfully amplified bands, with 42 of them showing polymorphism. These 42 primer pairs detected a total of 153 alleles, averaging 3.64 alleles per locus. The polymorphic information content ranged from 0.03 to 0.78, with an average value of 0.41, indicating a high level of polymorphism. Based on the analysis using STRUCTURE, PCoA, and UPGMA methods, the 35 chayote individuals were divided into two major clusters. Through further association analysis, 7 significantly associated SSR markers were identified, including four related to peel color and three related to spine., Conclusions: These molecular markers will contribute to the analysis of genetic diversity and genetic breeding improvement of chayote in the future., (© 2024. Objective: To explore the relationship between BMI and levels of plasma amino acids and acylcarnitines in Chinese adults. Methods: Based on 2 182 individuals with targeted mass spectrometry metabolomic measurements from the first resurvey of the China Kadoorie Biobank, we assessed the linear and nonlinear associations between BMI and plasma levels of 20 amino acids and 40 acylcarnitines using linear regression models and restricted cubic spline models, and identified BMI-related metabolic pathways. We conducted one-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) with BMI genetic risk scores as the instrumental variable further to explore the potential causal relationships between BMI and 20 amino acids and 40 acylcarnitines, and tested for horizontal pleiotropy using the MR-Egger method. Results: Observational analyses found that BMI was associated with increased plasma levels of 3 branched-chain amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, and valine), 2 aromatic amino acids (phenylalanine and tyrosine), 3 other amino acids (cysteine, glutamate, lysine), and 7 acylcarnitines (C3, C4, C5, C10, C10:1, C14, and C16), and with decreased circulating levels of asparagine, serine, and glycine. Pathway analysis identified 7 BMI-related amino acids metabolic pathways (false discovery rate corrected all P <0.05), including branched-chain amino acids and aromatic amino acids biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, etc . BMI showed a nonlinear relationship with leucine, valine, and threonine, and a linear relationship with other amino acids and acylcarnitines. One-sample MR analyses revealed that BMI was associated with elevated levels of tyrosine and 4 acylcarnitines [C5-DC(C6-OH), C5-M-DC, C12-DC, and C14], with tyrosine and acylcarnitine C14 positively correlated with BMI in both observational [the β values (95% CI s) were 0.057 (0.044-0.070) and 0.018 (0.005-0.032), respectively] and One-sample MR analyses [the β values (95% CI s) were 0.102 (0.035-0.169) and 0.104 (0.036-0.173), respectively]. The MR analyses of the current study satisfied the 3 core assumptions of instrumental variable. Conclusions: BMI was associated with circulating 11 amino acids and 7 acylcarnitines in Chinese adults, involving several pathways such as branched-chain amino acid and aromatic amino acid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, and oxidative stress. There may be a causal relationship between BMI and tyrosine and acylcarnitine C14.

Air pollution exhibits significant spatial spillover effects, complicating and challenging regional governance models. This study innovatively applied and optimized a statistics-based complex network method in atmospheric environmental field. The methodology was enhanced through improvements in edge weighting and threshold calculations, leading to the development of an advanced pollutant transport network model. This model integrates pollution, meteorological, and geographical data, thereby comprehensively revealing the dynamic characteristics of PM 2.5 and O 3 transport among various cities in China. Research findings indicated that, throughout the year, the O 3 transport network surpassed the PM 2.5 network in edge count, average degree, and average weighted degree, showcasing a higher network density, broader city connections, and greater transmission strength. Particularly during the warm period, these characteristics of the O 3 network were more pronounced, showcasing significant transport potential. Furthermore, the model successfully identified key influential cities in different periods; it also provided detailed descriptions of the interprovincial spillover flux and pathways of PM 2.5 and O 3 across various time scales. It pinpointed major pollution spillover and receiving provinces, with primary spillover pathways concentrated in crucial areas such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region and its surrounding areas, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Fen-Wei Plain. Building on this, the model divided the O 3 , PM 2.5 , and synergistic pollution transmission regions in China into 6, 7, and 8 zones, respectively, based on network weights and the Girvan Newman (GN) algorithm. Such division offers novel perspectives and strategies for regional joint prevention and control. The validity of the model was further corroborated by source analysis results from the WRF-CAMx model in the BTH area. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for local and regional atmospheric pollution control strategies. The joint participation of multiple subjects is crucial for environmental governance. Using panel data for 273 Chinese cities during 2013-2019, this study investigates the impact and mechanism of public demands on environmental pollution. The results demonstrate that public demands measured by the number of environmental complaints placed on government leaders significantly reduce environmental pollution. Furthermore, increases in the rate and speed of government responses improve the effect of public demands on environmental governance. Public demands placed on provincial leaders reduce local environmental pollution to a greater extent than public demands placed on prefectural and county leaders. Province-level governments are more willing to consider public opinions and attach more importance to environmental governance; Prefecture-level governments prioritize province-level governments' attention to the environment when implementing environmental governance. Moreover, strong political ties between provincial and prefectural leaders and long tenures among prefectural leaders strengthen the pollution reduction effect of public demands placed on provincial leaders. The reduction effect of environmental complaints on pollution emission is more significant in cities with high level of Internet construction and environmental disclosure. Background: Mental illnesses and mental health challenges have become increasingly pervasive among Chinese university students. However, the utilization rate of mental health services is low among students., Aims: We aimed to explore Chinese university students' help-seeking behaviors to understand how they deal with mental health challenges and use the results to inform the development of effective mental health promotion initiatives., Methods: In this study, we conducted 13 focus group interviews with students in six universities in Jinan, China, including 91 (62%) female students and 56 (38%) male students. We drew on the Theory of Planned Behaviors to guide our thematic analysis to gain a contextual understanding of participants' accounts on help-seeking., Results: Our results have depicted the help-seeking patterns of Chinese university students and show that there are four major behaviors which are self-reliance, seeking support from peers and families, seeking professional support, and accessing virtual mental health care., Conclusion: Results from this study can be used to inform the development of mental health literacy programming for students in universities that share similar contexts, and the study has also opened up a new space for using qualitative approaches to study mental health needs and access to care in diverse populations.

Purpose: To investigate the longitudinal alterations of retinal microvasculature in patients with primary coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection., Methods: A cohort of participants, who had never been infected with COVID-19, was recruited between December 2022 and May 2023 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing, China. Participants underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations and fundus imaging, which included color fundus photography, autofluorescence photography, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and SS-OCT angiography (SS-OCTA). If participants were infected with COVID-19 during the study, follow-ups with consistent imaging modality were conducted within one week and two months after recovery from the infection., Results: 31 patients (61 eyes), with a mean age of 31.0 ± 7.2 years old, were eligible for this study. All participants contracted mild COVID-19 infection within one month of baseline data collection. The average period was 10.9 ± 2.0 days post-infection for the first follow-up and 61.0 ± 3.5 days for the second follow-up. No clinical retinal microvasculopathy features were observed during the follow-ups. However, SS-OCTA analysis showed a significant increase in macular vessel density (MVD) from 60.76 ± 2.88% at baseline to 61.59 ± 3.72%(p=0.015) at the first follow-up, which subsequently returned to the baseline level of 60.23 ± 3.33% (p=0.162) at the two-month follow-up. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ) remained stable during the follow-ups with areas of 0.339 ± 0.097mm 2 , 0.342 ± 0.093mm 2 , and 0.344 ± 0.098mm 2 at the baseline, first follow-up (p=0.09) and second follow-up (p=0.052), respectively. Winter wheat is one of the most important crops in the world. It is great significance to obtain the planting area of winter wheat timely and accurately for formulating agricultural policies. Due to the limited resolution of single SAR data and the susceptibility of single optical data to weather conditions, it is difficult to accurately obtain the planting area of winter wheat using only SAR or optical data. To solve the problem of low accuracy of winter wheat extraction only using optical or SAR images, a decision tree classification method combining time series SAR backscattering feature and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) was constructed in this paper. By synergy using of SAR and optical data can compensate for their respective shortcomings. First, winter wheat was distinguished from other vegetation by NDVI at the maturity stage, and then it was extracted by SAR backscattering feature. This approach facilitates the semi-automated extraction of winter wheat. Taking Yucheng City of Shandong Province as study area, 9 Sentinel-1 images and one Sentinel-2 image were taken as the data sources, and the spatial distribution of winter wheat in 2022 was obtained. The results indicate that the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (Kappa) of the proposed method are 96.10% and 0.94, respectively. Compared with the supervised classification of multi-temporal composite pseudocolor image and single Sentinel-2 image using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, the OA are improved by 10.69% and 5.66%, respectively. Compared with using only SAR feature for decision tree classification, the producer accuracy (PA) and user accuracy (UA) for extracting the winter wheat are improved by 3.08% and 8.25%, respectively. Purpose: To identify the predictors of infectious disease-specific health literacy (IDSHL), and establish an easy-to-apply nomogram to predict the IDSHL of older adults., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 380 older adults who completed the IDSHL, self-rated health, socio-demographic and other questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to identify the IDSHL predictors. Nomogram was used to construct a predictive model., Results: Up to 70.1% of older adults had limited IDSHL. Age, education, place of residence, self-rated health, and Internet access were the important influencing factors of IDSHL. The established nomogram model showed high accuracy (receiver operating characteristic curve: 0.848)., Conclusions: The IDSHL of Chinese older adults was significantly deficient. Background: Yunnan hulled wheat grains (YHWs) have abundant phenolic compounds (PCs). However, a systematic elucidation of the phenolic characteristics and molecular basis in YHWs is currently lacking. The aim of the study, for the first time, was to conduct metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of YHWs at different developmental stages., Results: A total of five phenolic metabolite classes (phenolic acids, flavonoids, quinones, lignans and coumarins, and tannins) and 361 PCs were identified, with flavonoids and phenolic acids being the most abundant components. The relative abundance of the identified PCs showed a dynamic decreasing pattern with grain development, and the most significant differences in accumulation were between the enlargement and mature stage, which is consistent with the gene regulation patterns of the corresponding phenolic biosynthesis pathway. Through co-expression and co-network analysis, PAL, HCT, CCR, F3H, CHS, CHI and bZIP were identified and predicted as candidate key enzymes and transcription factors., Conclusion: The results broaden our understanding of PC accumulation in wheat whole grains, especially the differential transfer between immature and mature grains. Previous air pollution control strategies didn't pay enough attention to regional collaboration and the spatial response sensitivities, resulting in limited control effects in China. This study proposed an effective PM 2.5 and O 3 control strategy scheme with the integration of Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and WRF-CAMx, emphasizing regional collaborative control and the strengthening of control in sensitive areas. This scheme embodies the idea of hierarchical management and spatial-temporally differentiated management, with SOM identifying the collaborative subregions, GA providing the optimized subregion-level priority of precursor emission reductions, and WRF-CAMx providing response sensitivities for grid-level priority of precursor emission reductions. With Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the surrounding area (BTHSA, "2 + 26" cities) as the case study area, the optimized strategy required that regions along Taihang Mountains strengthen the emission reductions of all precursors in PM 2.5 -dominant seasons, and strengthen VOCs reductions but moderate NOx reductions in O 3 -dominant season. The spatiotemporally differentiated control strategy, without additional emission reduction burdens than the 14th Five-Year Plan proposed, reduced the average annual PM 2.5 and MDA8 O 3 concentrations in 28 cities by 3.2%-8.2% and 3.9%-9.7% respectively in comparison with non-differential control strategies, with the most prominent optimization effects occurring in the heavily polluted seasons (6.9%-18.0% for PM 2.5 and 3.3%-14.2% for MDA8 O 3 , respectively). Sunken green space is one of the urban rainwater collection facilities, which belongs to Low Impact Development (LID) techniques. It plays a key role in the construction of sponge city, and the amount of runoff collection is usually affected by the area of the sunken green space, the infiltration rate of the soil, and the annual runoff collection rate. To determine the minimum soil infiltration rate of sunken green space considering the annual runoff collection ratio of sponge cities, this paper selects a residential district in Hefei city, China, as the case study. Based on 45 years of precipitation data, the designed rainfall corresponding to annual runoff collection ratios of 75%, 80% and 85% is 21.3 mm, 23.4 mm and 27.5 mm, respectively. The characteristics of rainfall infiltration in sunken green space are analyzed by using the water balance model and runoff yield and conflux model. The results reveal that the soil infiltration rate is 1.16×10-4 cm/s~3.88×10-3 cm/s when the sunken depth is 0.1 m~0.3 m and that the ratio of green space area is 5%~25%. The runoff collection of the reconstructed sunken green space is 2.87 times and 1.98 times that of the nonsunken green space and the nonreconstructed sunken green space, respectively. That is to say, under the comprehensive performance of the sunken depth, sunken green space area, the steady soil infiltration rater of the reconstructed sunken green space cannot be less than the value obtained in this paper. Otherwise, the requirements of annual total runoff reduction ratio of the sponge city cannot be met. Therefore, this study provides references for realizing the ratio of annual runoff collection and sponge city construction in similar urban areas. Large petrochemical complex (PC) widely exists in both developing and developed countries, and is expected to have a special photochemical pollution in local scale due to huge VOCs emissions. Here, a typical large-scale PC in North China was selected as the study case, to explore the character, formation and influence of local photochemical pollution regarding PCs based on an improved 0-D chemical model. In the study PC, VOCs-rich character was apparent with THCs level of 90.8 ± 28.0 ppb and THCs/NOx ratio of ∼26.2 mol/mol. Severe O 3 pollution was found in warm months with monthly mean MDA1O3 of 67.3-96.0 ppb. Model simulations showed the heavy O 3 pollution in this PC was attributed to high precursors rather than to unfavorable meteorology, and was more sensitive to NOx (with response of 1.42 g/g) than to THCs (with response of 0.12 g/g). The photochemical pollution formation potential of the emission plumes of this PC was very enormous, with production rate of 19.6 ppb h -1 for O 3 , 2.9 ppb h -1 for HCHO and 1.1 ppb h -1 for CH 3 CHO on daytime average, 1-5 greater than in normal urban areas. The higher production rates happened in morning hours, which explained the earlier peak time of observed O 3 in PCs. The more water quality evaluation indicators, the greater the amount of water quality evaluation calculation. Under the requirements of evaluation accuracy, the index screening method is usually used to optimize water quality evaluation index to reduce the calculation amount of water quality evaluation. Taking Mengcheng Gate of Guo River as an example, the information sensitivity index screening method was used to simplify the water quality evaluation index system from 17 to 12 indicators. The variable fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to compare and evaluate the original index system and the optimal index system. The results showed that the water quality results of the optimal index system are consistent with the original index evaluation results. And the water quality of Mengcheng Gate is basically stable at class I level. The information sensitivity method reduced the number of indicators by 29.41%. The error between the water quality evaluation results based on the optimal indicators and the original indicators is less than 10%. The maximum error, minimum error, and average error are 8.92%, 0.08%, and 2.46%, respectively. It revealed that the information sensitivity method can eliminate the information redundancy while retaining the information of the original index system. It can also reduce the calculation amount of water quality evaluation in the future. The variable fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method can reasonably reflect the complex nonlinear relationship between water quality index and water quality category. This accuracy has practical significance for guiding the optimization of water quality evaluation index system, improving the efficiency of water quality evaluation. We introduce LYSTO, the Lymphocyte Assessment Hackathon, which was held in conjunction with the MICCAI 2019 Conference in Shenzhen (China). The competition required participants to automatically assess the number of lymphocytes, in particular T-cells, in images of colon, breast, and prostate cancer stained with CD3 and CD8 immunohistochemistry. Differently from other challenges setup in medical image analysis, LYSTO participants were solely given a few hours to address this problem. In this paper, we describe the goal and the multi-phase organization of the hackathon; we describe the proposed methods and the on-site results. Additionally, we present post-competition results where we show how the presented methods perform on an independent set of lung cancer slides, which was not part of the initial competition, as well as a comparison on lymphocyte assessment between presented methods and a panel of pathologists. We show that some of the participants were capable to achieve pathologist-level performance at lymphocyte assessment. After the hackathon, LYSTO was left as a lightweight plug-and-play benchmark dataset on grand-challenge website, together with an automatic evaluation platform.

A study was conducted on aerosol-radiation interactions over six cities in this region within the 2015-2019 period. WRF-Chem simulations on 2017 showed that based on the six-city average, the aerosol load (PM 2.5 concentrations) of 121.9, 49.6, 43.3, and 66.3 µg/m 3 in January, April, July, and October, mainly lowered the level of downward shortwave radiation by 38.9, 24.0, 59.1, and 24.4 W/m 2 and reduced the boundary layer height by 79.9, 40.8, 87.4, and 31.0 m, via scattering and absorbing solar radiation. The sensitivity of meteorological changes to identical aerosol loads varied in the order July > January > October and April. Then, the cooling and stabilizing effects of aerosols further led to increases in PM 2.5 , by 23.0, 3.4, 4.6, and 7.3 µg/m 3 respectively in the four months. The sensitivity of the effect of aerosols on PM 2.5 was greatest in January rather than in July, contrary to the effect on meteorology. Moreover, a negative linear relation was observed between daily BLH reductions and aerosol loads in fall and winter, and between PM 2.5 increases and aerosol loads in all seasons. With the PM 2.5 pollution improvements in this region, the aerosol radiative forcing was effectively reduced. This should result in daily BLH increases of 10-24 m in fall and winter, and the estimates in Beijing agreed well with the corresponding results based on AMDAR data. An evidence-based control strategy for emission reduction of VOC sources can effectively solve the regional PM 2.5 and O 3 compound pollution in China. We estimated the anthropogenic VOC emission inventory in China in 2018 and established a source profile database containing 129 sources based on localized detection and the latest research results. Then, the distribution of the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) for emission sources was analyzed. Moreover, priority control routes for VOC emission sources were proposed for different periods. Anthropogenic VOC emissions in China reached 27,211.8 Gg in 2018, and small passenger cars, industrial protective coatings, biomass burning, heavy trucks, printing, asphalt paving, oil storage and transportation, coking, and oil refining were the main contributors. Industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, and biomass burning all contributed significantly to OFP and SOAFP. Priority in emission reduction control should be given to industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, heavy trucks, coking, printing, asphalt paving, chemical fibers, and basic organic chemical sources over the medium and long term in China. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, a highly industrialized area in China, boasts a concentration of coking plants that constitute a vital component of the steel industry. In recent years, the Chinese government has implemented measures including backward production capacity elimination (BPCE), ultra-low emission technology transformation (ULET), and deep treatment of volatile organic compounds (DTV), to promote technological progress in the coking industry and mitigate the impact of pollutant emissions. This study focuses on the emission trends, reduction effects of various measures, and the impact on air quality and human health in the regional scale. The findings reveal that in 2015, the emissions of PM, SO 2 , NOx and VOCs of the coking industry in BTH region were 29.15, 9.64, 26.62 and 82.99 Gg (1000 tons/year) respectively. However, by 2019, these emissions had significantly decreased by 19.95, 5.78, 18.69, and 22.53 Gg, respectively. Of these reductions, ULET contributed about 80.3 % of NOx and SO 2 , and 57.4 % of PM. Meanwhile, DTV and BPCE contributed 49.2 % and 50.7 % of VOCs emission reduction, respectively. Despite the improvement effect on PM 2.5 , SO 2 , and NO 2 is limited, the substantial decrease in VOCs (particularly benzene) resulted in a significant reduction in the coking industry's contribution to the atmospheric benzene concentration, dropping from 15.9 % in 2015 to 11.6 % in 2019. Moreover, the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) contribution of benzene inhalation in the BTH region also decreased from 1.7 × 10 -6 to 1.2 × 10 -6 . Looking ahead to 2025, the continued implementation of DTV will be expected to reduce VOCs emissions by 24.41Gg. This will bring the industry's contribution to the benzene concentration down to 6.8 % and the cancer risk of the population to an acceptable level (LCR < 1 × 10 -6 ). The researchers examined the associations between thinking styles and grit. A cross-sectional design was adopted, with two weeks of data collection. The Thinking Styles Inventory-Revised II and the Grit Scale were administered to 365 signing deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) Arts and Design students and 443 hearing university students in mainland China. CFA, MANOVA, hierarchical multiple regression analyses, and a multi-group analysis were executed for data analysis. DHH and hearing students with Type I styles (i.e., more creativity-generating, less structured, and cognitively more complex) had higher grit levels, with large effect sizes for the identified relationships. There were no differences in the relations for either group. The associations between thinking styles and grit may protect against psychological pressure and rehabilitation problems and enable university/school administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers, parents, and students to enhance the grit of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

It focused on heavy metal pollution of green vegetation in Tuokexun County, Xinjiang Northwest China's suburban industrial area, using inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer to analyze the samples for Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, As, Cu, and Cr contents. The soil's heavy metal content in the study area indicated a minor level of pollution overall (P = 1.77), with the most severe contamination being Hg, which is more likely to be caused by human activities. Heavy metal elements in trees have the most stable composition in comparison to grass and shrubs, with varying concentrations across different vegetation. The concentrations of Mn, Cd and Hg were highest in the Haloxylon ammodendron, Ni in Morus alba, Pb, As and Cu in Nitraria tangutorums, and Cr in Phragmites australis. Heavy metal restoration is most effectively performed by shrubs, and there are disparities in heavy metal enrichment among various vegetation. No significant difference was found in heavy metal enrichment between the aboveground and underground parts of vegetation. Based on the average of the membership function, Tamarix exhibits the strongest ability to enrich heavy metals, while Nitraria tangutorum comes in second, and Cynanchum chinense R.Br. is the least effective among all plant species. Morus alba is recommended as the primary planting species in the area. Adhering to a partially defined plan requires an intentional commitment that curbs distracting desires conflicting with the planned course of action, enabling humans to act coherently over time. Two studies (N = 50, 27 girls, ages 5-6, Han Chinese, in Hangzhou, China, 2022.02-2022.03) explored the development of commitment to partial plans in a sequential decision-making task and the underlying cognitive capacity focusing on its correlation to attentional control. Results suggest that only 6-year-olds committed to partial plans (d = .51), and children's commitment ratio was positively correlated with the use of proactive control (r = .40). Mudanjiang phlebovirus (MJPV) is a newly discovered phlebovirus, initially detected from Ixodes persulcatus ticks in China in 2022. In this study, by next-generation sequencing (NGS) on a wide variety of ticks and wild small animals in China, we detected MJPV from I. persulcatus and Meriones meridianus . Additionally, we conducted RT-PCR and sequencing on 1815 adult ticks and 805 wild small mammals collected from eight provinces in China between 2017 and 2021. MJPV RNA-positive results were found in 0.22% (4/1815) of tick samples, as well as in 0.12% (1/805) of rodent samples. All positive detections were obtained from Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia. Sequencing analysis revealed nucleotide similarities ranging from 98.23% to 99.11%, as well as amino acid similarities ranging from 99.12% to100%, between the current MJPV strain and previously reported strains of MJPV. Phylogenetic tree analysis demonstrated that the previously reported MJPV strain along with our two variants clustered together with other tick-borne phenuiviruses, indicating their close relationship within this viral group. This study represents the first detection of MJPV infection in wild rodents, expanding the known host range for this virus in the endemic regions.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization is important for grape growth and wine quality. Unreasonable N fertilizer application affects wine growth and has a negative impact on wine quality. Therefore, it is essential to address the mismatch between N application and wine composition. To regulate vine growth and improve grape and wine quality, Cabernet Gernischt (Vitis vinifera L.) grapevines were subjected to lower levels of N, compared to normal N supply treatments, during the grape growing seasons of 2019 and 2020 in the wine region of Yantai, China. The effects of reduced N application from pre-boom to pre-veraison on vine growth, yield and composition of grapes, and dry red wine anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenolic compound content were studied. We found that reduced N application significantly decreased dormant shoot fresh mass and yield. However, the effect of N application on fruit ripening depended on the season. Nitrogen-reduction treatment significantly improved wine phenolic parameters, including total phenolics, tannins, and anthocyanins, and enhanced most of the individual anthocyanins and some non-anthocyanin phenolics, especially stilbenes, including piceatannol, trans-resveratrol, and polydatin, regardless of the season. Increasingly prominent pollution levels and strong regional characteristics of O 3 , especially in economically developed eastern China, called for a regional cooperation strategy based on transport quantification. This study adopted the complex networks to construct the O 3 Transport Network (OTN) to explore characteristics in eastern China in the summer of 2017 and 2021, whose results were afterward verified with spatial source apportionment results simulated with WRF-CMAQ-ISAM. As OTN suggested, O 3 transport showed stronger and faster characteristics in eastern China in 2021 than in 2017, judging from changes in the network density, number of connections, transport ranges, and transport paths. Among all cluster communities, inland Shandong was the most important O 3 transport hub, the Central Community was the largest community, and the Southern Community showed the closest inter-city transport relationships. In- and out-weighted degrees in OTN showed relatively superior consistency with the transport matrix obtained with WRF-CMAQ-ISAM, and can be explained by wind fields. Generally, O 3 pollution in the whole eastern China showed more frequent intra-regional transport and more strengthened inter-city correlations in 2021 than in 2017, meanwhile, northerly and southerly cities exhibited strengthening and weakening trends in O 3 transport, respectively. Despite the completely different principles of complex networks and air quality models, their results were mutually verifiable. The accelerated accumulation of phthalate esters (PAEs) in paddy soils poses a serious threat to human health. However, related studies mainly focus on facility vegetable fields, drylands, and orchards, and little is known about paddy soils. In this study, 125 samples were collected from typical red paddy fields to investigate the pollution characteristics, sources, health risks, and main drivers of PAEs. Soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity, and bacterial community composition were also measured simultaneously. The results showed that eight PAE congeners were detected ranging from 0.17 to 1.97 mg kg -1 . Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP) were the most abundant PAE congeners, accounting for 81% of the total PAEs. DEHP exhibited a potential carcinogenic risk to humans through the intake route. The main PAEs were positively correlated with soil organic matter (SOM) and soil water content (SWC) contents. Low levels of PAEs increased bacterial abundance. Furthermore, most PAE congeners were positively correlated with hydrolase activity. Soil acidity and nutrient dynamics played a dominant role in the bacterial community composition, with PAE congeners playing a secondary role. These findings suggest that there may be a threshold response between PAEs and organic matter and nutrient transformation in red paddy soils, and that microbial community should be the key driver. PM 2.5 emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs) have a significant impact on air quality, human health, and climate change, and seriously threaten the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Globally, a series of emission control measures have been implemented to reduce pollution emissions from HDDTs. Current studies assessing the impact of these measures on air quality and human health have mainly used coarse-grained emission data as input to dispersion model, resulting in the inability to capture the spatiotemporal variability of pollutant concentrations and tending to increase the uncertainty of health impact assessment results. In this study, we quantified the impact of pollution control policies for HDDTs in Beijing on PM 2.5 concentrations, human health, and economic losses by integrating policy scenario analysis, pollution dispersion simulation, public health impact and economic benefit assessment models, supported by high spatiotemporal resolution emission data from HDDTs. The results show that PM 2.5 concentrations from HDDTs exhibit significant spatial aggregation characteristics, with the intensity of aggregation at night being about twice as high as that during the day. The emission hotspots are mainly concentrated in the sixth, fifth and fourth rings and major highways. Compared to the "business as usual" scenario in 2018, the current policy of updating the fuel standard to China VI and the emission standard to China 6 can reduce PM 2.5 concentrations by 96.72%, thereby avoiding 612 premature deaths, which is equivalent to obtaining economic benefits of 1.65 billion CNY. This study further emphasizes the importance of high spatiotemporal resolution emission data during traffic dispersion modeling. Yunnan hulled wheat (YHW) possesses excellent nutritional characteristics; however, the precise amino acid (AA) composition, contents, and molecular mechanisms underlying AA biosynthesis in YHW grains remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to perform metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling to identify the composition and genetic factors regulating AA biosynthesis during the physiological maturation of grains of two YHW genotypes, Yunmai and Dikemail, with high and low grain protein contents, respectively. A total of 40 and 14 differentially accumulated amino acids (AAs) or AA derivatives were identified between the waxy grain (WG) and mature grain (MG) phenological stages of Yunmai and Dikemail, respectively. The AA composition differed between WG and MG, and the abundance of AAs-especially that of essential AAs-was significantly higher in WG than in MG (only 38.74-58.26% of WG). Transcriptome analysis revealed differential regulation of structural genes associated with the relatively higher accumulation of AAs in WG. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis and correlation analyses of WG and MG indicated differences in the expression of clusters of genes encoding both upstream elements of AA biosynthesis and enzymes that are directly involved in AA synthesis. The expression of these genes directly impacted the synthesis of various AAs. Together, these results contribute to our understanding of the mechanism of AA biosynthesis during the different developmental stages of grains and provide a foundation for further research to improve the nutritional value of wheat products.

Environmental impact evaluation of buildings is critical for further analysis and optimization of pig farms for sustainable pork production. This study is the first attempt to quantify the carbon and water footprints of a standard intensive pig farm building using building information modeling (BIM) and operation simulation model. The model was constructed with carbon emission and water consumption coefficients, and a database was built. The results showed that the operational stage of pig farm accounted for most of the carbon footprint (49.3-84.9 %) and water footprint (65.5-92.5 %). Building materials production ranked second in carbon (12.0-42.5 %) and water footprints (4.4-24.9 %), and pig farm maintenance ranked third in carbon (1.7-5.7 %) and water footprints (0.7-3.6 %). Notably, the mining and production stages of building materials contributed the largest carbon and water footprints of pig farm construction. Masonry materials have a significant impact on the overall carbon and water footprints of the pig farm. Pig farm using aerated concrete could reduce 41.1 % of the total carbon footprint and 58.9 % of the total water footprint compared to that using coal gangue sintered brick and autoclaved fly ash brick. A systematic understanding of the spatio-temporal changes and driving factors in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau holds significant scientific reference value for the future of ecological sustainable development. This paper utilizes MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological data to investigate the spatio-temporal changes and driving factors of vegetation coverage in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 2001 to 2020. Methods employed include the dimidiate pixel model, trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and residual analysis. The results demonstrate a generally fluctuating upward trend in vegetation coverage across the Tibetan Plateau over the past two decades, with spatial expansion occurring from northwest to southeast. Vegetation coverage exhibits a positive correlation with climate factors. Approximately 60.7% of the area showed a positive correlation between vegetation fractional cover (FVC) and precipitation, with 8.66% of the area demonstrating extremely significant (p < 0.05) and significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation. Human activities, on the whole, have contributed to the enhancement of vegetation cover in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The areas where human activities have positively impacted vegetation cover are primarily situated in north-central Qinghai and north of Ngari, while areas experiencing degradation include certain grassland regions in central-eastern Yushu, Nagqu, and Lhasa., (© 2023. Background: Rowell syndrome (RS) is an uncommon condition characterized by erythema multiforme (EM)-like lesions and lupus erythematosus. It is more common in females, and EM may be the first manifestation of the disease with positive autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibody (ANA), SSA, SSB and rheumatoid factor. The pathogenesis of RS is unknown and is likely caused by drug induction, ultraviolet exposure and infection., Method: We describe a case of RS from China which presented as characteristic targetoid-like lesions and chilblain-like erythema on hands and feet. This is a case of RS in a female patient from the inpatient department of dermatology., Results: A 41-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus exhibited chilblain-like erythema and characteristic EM lesions on her extremities. She tested positive for serum ANA (1:320) and anti-double-stranded DNA, as well as other autoantibodies. Systemic glucocorticoids and hydroxychloroquine worked effectively for her., Conclusion: The present case met diagnostic criteria of RS. Microorganisms inhabiting heavy metal-contaminated soils have evolved specific metabolic capabilities to survive, which has the potential for effective bioremediation. However, the ecological consequence of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) on bacterial taxonomic and functional attributes of rice field remains unclear. Here, we selected paddy soils along a polluted river in southern China to evaluate the role of Cu and Cd contaminant fractions in regulating bacterial co-occurrence patterns. We also assessed the effects of these heavy metal fractions on the relative abundance of functional genes using shotgun metagenomic analysis. Soil Cu and Cd concentrations in paddy soils gradually decreased from upstream to downstream of the river, and had a greater impact on bacterial communities and metabolic potentials than soil general properties. Soil Cu and Cd contamination led to drastic changes in the cumulative relative abundance of ecological modules in bacterial co-occurrence networks. Bacteria associated with AD3, HSB&#95;OF53-F07 (both belonging to Chloroflexi), Rokubacteriales, and Nitrospira were identified as tolerant to Cu and Cd contamination. The Cu and Cd contaminant fractions were positively correlated with the genes involved in metal resistance, carbon (C) fixation, nitrification, and denitrification, but negatively correlated with the genes related to nitrogen (N) fixation. These results indicated that soil Cu and Cd pollution not only enriched metal resistant genes, but also affected genes related to microbial C and N cycling. Background: Short-term air pollution exposure and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) risk are related. However, the impact of the pollutant levels decline on this relationship, which attributes to clean air policy implementation and the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, is unclear. In the present research, we explored the influence of different pollutant levels on ICH risk during eight years in a southwestern China megacity., Methods: Our research used a time-stratified case-crossover design. We retrospectively analyzed ICH patients in a teaching hospital from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2021, and divided 1571 eligible cases into two groups (1st group: 2014-2017; 2nd group: 2018-2021). We observed the trend of every pollutant in the entire study period and compared the pollution levels in each group, using air pollutants data (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , CO, and O 3 ) documented by the local government. We further established a single pollutant model via conditional logistic regression to analyze the association between short-term air pollutants exposure and ICH risk. We also discussed the association of pollution levels and ICH risk in subpopulations according to individual factors and monthly mean temperature., Results: We found that five air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , CO) exhibited a continuous downward trend for the whole duration, and the daily concentration of all six pollutants decreased significantly in 2018-2021 compared with 2014-2017. Overall, the elevation of daily PM 2.5 , SO 2 , and CO was associated with increased ICH risk in the first group and was not positively associated with risk escalation in the second group. For patients in subgroups, the changes in the influence of lower pollutant levels on ICH risk were diverse. In the second group, for instance, PM 2.5 and PM 10 were associated with lower ICH risk in non-hypertension, smoking, and alcohol-drinking participants; however, SO 2 had associations with increased ICH risk for smokers, and O 3 had associations with raised risk in men, non-drinking, warm month population., Conclusions: Our study suggests that decreased pollution levels diminish the adverse effects of short-term air pollutants exposure and ICH risk in general. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Munziq Balgam (MBm) is a classic preparation of a traditional Uyghur medicine used for many years to treat abnormal body fluid diseases. The formula, as an in-hospital preparation, has already been used in the Hospital of Xinjiang Traditional Uyghur Medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with significant clinical effects., Aim of the Study: This study intends to reveal the intervention effect of MBm on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rats, discover the potential biomarkers with efficacy, and explore the mechanisms of metabolic regulation by using metabolomics method., Material and Methods: Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into five groups: blank group, CIA model group, Munziq Balgam nomal-dosage, Munziq Balgam high-dosage group and control group. Body weight, paw swelling, arthritis index, immune indices and histopathological experiments were carried out. Plasma from rats were detected by UPLC-MS/MS. Metabolomics of plasma was performed to analyze metabolic profiles, potential biomarkers, and metabolic pathways of MBm for CIA rats. The main metabolic result of Uyghur medicine MBm was compared with that of Zhuang medicine Longzuantongbi granules (LZTBG) to explore the characteristics of two ethnic medicines from different regions for RA., Results: MBm could significantly alleviate symptoms of CIA rats by relieving arthritis symptoms on paw redness and swelling, inflammatory cell infiltration, synovial hyperplasia, pannus, cartilage and bone tissue destruction, as well as inhibiting the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, UA and ALP. Linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, achidonic acid, gycerophospholipid, sphingolipid metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism and fatty acid degradation served as the main nine pathways of the interventional effect of MBm on CIA rats. Twenty-three different metabolites were screened out and strongly associated with the indicator makes of RA. Eight potential efficacy-related biomarkers were finally discovered in metabolic pathway network (phosphatidylcholine, bilirubin, sphinganine 1-phosphate, phytosphingosine, SM (d18:1/16:0), pantothenic acid, l-palmitoylcarnitine, chenodeoxycholate). Three metabolites (chenodeoxycholate, hyodeoxycholic acid and O-palmitoleoylcarnitine) were changed in both the metabolic study of MBm and LZTBG intervention effects on CIA rats. Additionally, MBm and LZTBG shared the same 6 metabolic pathways including linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, achidonic acid, gycerophospholipid, and primary bile acid biosynthesis., Conclusion: The study suggested that MBm may effectively alleviate RA by regulating inflammation, immunity-related pathways and multiple targets.
