Equations based on simple anthropometric measurements to predict body fat percentage (BF%) are lacking in Chinese population with increasing prevalence of obesity and related abnormalities. We aimed to develop and validate BF% equations in two independent population-based samples of Chinese men and women. The equations were developed among 960 Chinese Hans living in Shanghai (age 46·2 (sd 5·3) years; 36·7 % male) using a stepwise linear regression and were subsequently validated in 1150 Shanghai residents (58·7 (sd 6·0) years; 41·7 % male; 99 % Chinese Hans, 1 % Chinese minorities). The associations of equation-derived BF% with changes of 6-year cardiometabolic outcomes and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) were evaluated in a sub-cohort of 780 Chinese, compared with BF% measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA; BF%-DXA). Sex-specific equations were established with age, BMI and waist circumference as independent variables. The BF% calculated using new sex-specific equations (BF%-CSS) were in reasonable agreement with BF%-DXA (mean difference: 0·08 (2 sd 6·64) %, P= 0·606 in men; 0·45 (2 sd 6·88) %, P< 0·001 in women). In multivariate-adjusted models, the BF%-CSS and BF%-DXA showed comparable associations with 6-year changes in TAG, HDL-cholesterol, diastolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein and uric acid (P for comparisons ≥ 0·05). Meanwhile, the BF%-CSS and BF%-DXA had comparable areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for associations with incident T2D (men P= 0·327; women P= 0·159). The BF% equations might be used as surrogates for DXA to estimate BF% among adult Chinese. More studies are needed to evaluate the application of our equations in different populations. Background Breast cancer incidence is currently low in China. However, the distribution of reproductive and lifestyle risk factors for breast cancer among Chinese women is changing rapidly. We quantified the expected effect of changes in breast cancer risk factors on future rates of breast cancer in China. Methods We first validated and calibrated the Rosner-Colditz log-incidence breast cancer model in Chinese women who participated in the Shanghai Women's Health Study cohort (N = 74942). We then applied the calibrated model to a representative sample of Chinese women who were aged 35-49 years in 2001 using data from the Chinese National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Survey (NFPRHS, N = 17078) to predict the age-specific and cumulative breast cancer incidence among all Chinese women of this age group. We evaluated the relative impact of changes in modifiable risk factors, including alcohol intake, parity, postmenopausal hormone use, and adult weight gain, on cumulative incidence of breast cancer. Results Breast cancer incidence in China is expected to increase substantially from current rates, estimated at 10-60 cases per 100000 women, to more than 100 new cases per 100000 women aged 55-69 years by 2021. We predicted 2.5 million cases of breast cancer by 2021 among Chinese women who were 35-49 years old in 2001. Modest reductions in hormone and alcohol use, and weight maintenance could prevent 270000 of these cases. Conclusions China is on the cusp of a breast cancer epidemic. Although some risk factors associated with economic development are largely unavoidable, the substantial predicted increase in new cases of breast cancer calls for urgent incorporation of this disease in future health care infrastructure planning. Background: Few studies have evaluated the associations of plasma homocysteine concentration, the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T genotype and B vitamin concentration with intima media thickness (IMT) in multiethnic populations., Methods: In the Study of Health Assessment and Risk in Ethnic groups (SHARE), we measured carotid IMT, fasting serum folate, serum B12, plasma pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) and plasma homocysteine and determined the MTHFR C677T genotype in a cross-sectional study of 818 South Asian, Chinese and European Canadians without previous history of CVD, cancer or diabetes during 1996-1998., Results: Plasma homocysteine was inversely related to serum folate, serum B12, plasma PLP, B vitamin supplement use and Chinese ethnicity, and was positively associated with hypertension, smoking, IMT, MTHFR 677T/T genotype and South Asian ethnicity. Although ethnicity was not a statistically significant modifier, among carriers of the MTHFR 677T/T genotype with serum folate < or =14 nmol/L compared to >14 nmol/L, plasma homocysteine was significantly higher among South Asians (50.9% increase, P < 0.001) and Europeans (52.4% increase, P < 0.001) but not Chinese (11.0% increase, P > 0.05). Plasma homocysteine > 11.7 micromol/L was associated with a 5.9% (95% CI: 1.9%, 10.0%) increase in IMT (approximately 0.04 mm) in the pooled-data analyses with similar increases noted in the ethnic-specific analyses. The 677T/T genotype was not associated with a significant change in IMT in the pooled-data analyses (2.7%; 95% CI: -1.7%, 7.2%) nor in ethnic-specific analyses compared to other genotypes, although there were only 63 677T/T homozygotes., Conclusion: The combination of lower serum folate and the MTHFR 677T/T genotype is associated with increased plasma homocysteine among South Asians and Europeans, but the association is not evident among Chinese possibly because their serum folate may not have been low enough to compromise MTHFR activity. Plasma homocysteine > 11.7 micromol/L appears to be associated with a clinically important increase in IMT.
