Anchor plate is a necessary component of the prestressed rock bolt, which plays a decisive role in actively resisting the rock mass deformation and improving the self-bearing capacity of the surrounding rock. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of anchor plate on the mechanical behavior of prestressed rock bolt used in squeezing large deformation tunnel, a series of numerical, field and laboratory tests were performed. The mechanical characteristics of anchor plate with different shapes and sizes were systematically analyzed. Based on the Muzhailing Tunnel in Gansu Province, China, which is a typical deep-buried soft rock tunnel and suffered from serious squeezing large deformation disaster, the field verification was carried out. Meanwhile, the influences of spherical washer on the mechanical behavior of bolt shaft and anchor plate were also investigated. The result shows that the bowl-shaped plate has much better performance than the flat one, while the rounded bowl plate performs slightly better than the squared bowl plate. With the increase of plate thickness or plane size, the anchor plate has the better bearing capacity, while the stress transfer effect will be worse. Furthermore, the non-uniform deformation will gradually increase with the decrease of plate thickness or increase of plane size. Therefore, it is advised to increase the plate thickness rather than the plane size under the condition of better bearing capacity. The bending-induced stress of the anchor plate increases rapidly with the increase of the inclination angle between bolt shaft and anchor plate. Whereas the installation angle is unavoidable in practice, the spherical washer which has great effects on reducing the bending-induced stress could be a necessary component of the prestressed rock bolt system. Rock bolts are widely used in coal mines throughout China. Approximately 8,000 km of roadways are excavated in coal mines every year in China, 80 % of which are supported by rock bolts. At present, the design of rock bolt support schemes is mainly based on analogies and experience from previous projects. In the present study, in order to evaluate the design of rock bolt support in roadways, several cross sections of a roadway were monitored for rock bolt stress during the roadway excavation and mining. The study results show that the stress in the rock bolts varied in the areas 20 m behind the excavating face and 30 m ahead of the mining face. For the rock bolts observed in this study, the max axial force was within the design limit of the bolts, thus the support design was shown to be acceptable. Then, numerical simulation was performed using FLAC to investigate the stress evolution in the rock bolts during the mining of the fully mechanized longwall face. The simulation results show an overall agreement with the in situ measurements. Finally, parametric study pertaining to length, anchorage length, and rock bolt spacing was carried out with the numerical model, and several suggestions for the support design were proposed. In coal mining roadway support design, the working resistance of the rock bolt is the key factor affecting its maximum support load. Effective improvement of the working resistance is of great significance to roadway support. Based on the rock bolt's tensile characteristics and the mining roadway surrounding rock deformation, a mechanical model for calculating the working resistance of the rock bolt was established and solved. Taking the mining roadway of the 17102 (3) working face at the Panji No. 3 Coal Mine of China as a research site, with a quadrilateral section roadway, the influence of pretension and anchorage length on the working resistance of high-strength and ordinary rock bolts in the middle and corner of the roadway is studied. The results show that when the bolt is in the elastic stage, increasing the pretension and anchorage length can effectively improve the working resistance. When the bolt is in the yield and strain-strengthening stages, increasing the pretension and anchorage length cannot effectively improve the working resistance. The influence of pretension and anchorage length on the ordinary and high-strength bolts is similar. The ordinary bolt's working resistance is approximately 25 kN less than that of the high-strength bolt. When pretension and anchorage length are considered separately, the best pretensions of the high-strength bolt in the middle of the roadway side and the roadway corner are 41.55 and 104.26 kN, respectively, and the best anchorage lengths are 1.54 and 2.12 m, respectively. The best anchorage length of the ordinary bolt is the same as that of the high-strength bolt, and the best pretension for the ordinary bolt in the middle of the roadway side and at the roadway corner is 33.51 and 85.12 kN, respectively. Rock-support interaction is one of the most core issues in underground engineering, which is of major interest to supporting structure design, construction safety and cost, as well as environmental protection. In order to study the rock-support interaction in deep tunnel under complex geological conditions, taking Xianglushan Tunnel of Yunnan Water Diversion Project in China as the engineering background, two true three-dimensional physical model tests were conducted. The model test results show: (1) the surrounding rock and support are a pair of opposite and united contradictions, which are both antagonistic and cooperative; (2) the rock-lining interaction and rock-bolt interaction are distinctly different. The lining is a type of outside supporting structure to bear the load from surrounding rock and the bolt is a kind of inside supporting structure to reinforce and protect surrounding rock; (3) the impacts of weak fault on mechanical behavior of surrounding rock and supporting structure are significant. The load bearing effects of surrounding rock and support system exhibit different characteristic depending on the corresponding geological conditions. The results can contribute to the development of construction scheme and optimization of support design, and also provide an ideal data set for the calibration and validation of numerical models to simulate the rock-support interaction. Deformation control of soft rock in deep roadways has always been a challenge in coal mining. The strain softening and rheological properties of high-stress soft rock not only cause large deformation of the surrounding rocks, but also lead to a long duration of deformation. Based on previous research results obtained here in China as well as abroad, this study focused on the S2S2 mining roadway in the Xiaokang Coal Mine of Liaoning Province in China for research and studied the characteristics and damage of its surrounding rock deformation. Furthermore, the sectional form that should be used in roadway construction, as well as the support structure types and parameters were proposed to control the excessive deformation of the surrounding rock. It is suggested that a circular section should be adopted as the mining roadway section, and the high-strength rock should be bolted together, employing the combination of the anchor cable support method. Industrial tests have verified that the circular roadway under the new support mode can enable relative distance changes between the roadway walls, make the roof and floor relatively flat, and reduce the convergence speed to a value lesser than that of the original support mode. The most important advantage is that under this joint support mode, the deformation and damage of the circular roadway would be less affected by mining activity, so the deformation and damage of the mining roadway can be controlled effectively. Sandy soil in the north of Hebei region of China is widely distributed, the temperature difference between day and night is large, the phenomenon of freezing and thawing is obvious, and the soil body before and after the freezing and thawing cycle of sandy soil slopes is affected by the changes. This paper takes the stability of a sandy soil anchorage interface under a freeze-thaw cycle as the research background and, based on the self-developed anchor-soil interface shear device, analyses the influence of changing sand rate, confining pressure, and the number of freeze-thaw cycles on the shear characteristics of an anchor-soil interface in anchorage specimens. The research findings indicate that, at 50–60% sand contents, the shear strength increases with a higher sand content and is positively correlated with confining pressure within a higher range. A higher sand content stabilises the anchoring body, but an excessively high sand content can lead to failure. Increasing the sand content, confining pressure, and freeze-thaw cycle number all result in a reduction in the shear displacement at the peak strength. After 11 freeze-thaw cycles, the shear strength of the anchoring body stabilises, with a reduction in strength of approximately 32%, and a higher sand content effectively reduces the reduction in strength. The magnitude of pretension force serves as an important indicator of the effectiveness of anchor bolt active support and is one of the significant factors influencing the stability of tunnel surrounding rock. Therefore, in practical engineering, it is crucial to establish the relationship between pretension torque and pretension force. However, current research in this field has some limitations. With a specific mine in western China as the engineering background, this paper first analyzed the influence factors of surrounding rock deformation and failure, established a mechanical model for pretension structure of anchor bolt support, and derived the quantitative relationship between pretension torque and pretension force based on hypothetical conditions. Finally, it proposed the loss effect of anchor bolt support and modified the pretightening loss coefficient for engineering application. The research results show that the actual pretightening force of anchor support is lower due to the influence of deep soft coal seam, which leads to failure of coal pillar under mining stress. The loss effect of surrounding rock on pretightening force was represented by a coefficient k, and the modified value of the coefficient was calculated as 0.19∼0.43. By applying the modified relationship between pretightening torque and pretightening force, it was found that the actual pretightening torque of 300 Nm applied to 11307 return air roadway effectively controlled surrounding rock deformation and failure, with coal pillar displacement less than 120 mm. The stress field of the roadway under multi-seam mining is complex due to multiple mining disturbances. The bolting control of the roadway under multi-seam mining has attracted wide concern. Moreover, conventional metal supporting materials in the coal rib are prone to sparks when shearer works, and new bolting materials are urgently needed. Taking a track roadway under multi-seam mining in China as the engineering case, the mining-induced stress field of the track roadway under multi-seam mining was investigated through numerical simulation and lab and field tests. The test evaluated the mechanical behaviour of FRP bolts and rebar bolts, as well as their anchorage performance under different conditions. Comparative analysis was conducted on the deformation and failure characteristics of the roadway under different bolting parameters to determine an optimised bolting scheme for the track roadway in the I011501 working face. The results show that the goafs and the remaining coal pillars in the overlying coal seams increase the stress in the track roadway in the I011501 working face, especially for the lower rib and roof. The tensile force of the 27 mm-diameter FRP bolt is 1.2 times that of the 22 mm-diameter rebar bolt. The shear strength of the full-length anchored FRP bolt is 70.8% higher than that of the endanchored bolt. The peak stress of the full-length-anchored bolt is in the shallow coal and rock mass. The optimised bolting scheme of the track roadway subject to multi-seam mining is determined, and the cost of the optimised bolting scheme is lower by about 25.2%, as compared with the primary bolting scheme. numerical simulation and field application results indicate that the optimised bolting scheme can significantly reduce the deformation and plastic failure of the track roadway in the I011501 working face, which is under multi-seam mining conditions. Rock bolt is a major reinforcement technique for roadways in coal mines in China. Generally, separation of the bonding interface between the rock mass and the bolt may lead to collapse of the bolted rock mass due to stress concentration. In order to establish the stress concentration mechanism on the bonding interface, the distribution functions for shear stress and longitudinal force on the interface are derived using Mindlin's model, and a failure criterion for the interface is proposed. In addition, influencing factors for the stress distribution mode are identified. Both analytical study and numerical simulations by ANSYS have shown that, as the elastic modulus of rock increases, both shear stress and the longitudinal force-concentrating zone move towards the outer end of bolt and decrease gradually from the free surface to the rock mass body. Also, there is an optimizing cement thickness which results in relatively uniform distributions of shear stress and longitudinal force on the interface. With the advancement of coal resources mining to the deep part, the control of the surrounding rock of the roadway has become one of the main problems in the field of mining. At the present stage, the bolt support technology of the roadway in China still faces problems such as unclear support mechanism and poor support effect. Based on the mechanism of bolt support, through theoretical analysis and experimental research, this study proposes the differentiated support technology for roadways based on the mechanical response of the plastic zone and applies this method in the Gada Coal Mine. The results of the study showed that the plastic zones with different shapes have different mechanical responses. compared with other plastic zone shapes, the control method of the roadway with a butterfly‐shaped plastic zone is more complex. Consequently, the support design of a bolt should not only consider the scope of the plastic zone of support construction but also grasp the development law of the plastic zone. Effective support measures should be taken as early as possible for roadways with butterfly‐shaped plastic zones to prevent aggressive development of the butterfly‐shaped plastic zone. In China, slope engineering occasionally faces landslides in rocky slopes containing muddy interlayers, primarily triggered by excavation activities. These incidents lead to considerable human casualties and substantial economic losses. However, existing studies predominantly concentrate on the excavation-induced impacts on the stability of rocky slopes characterized by single-layered soft and weak interlayers. Conversely, reports on how excavation influences the stability of bedding cataclastic rock mass high slope containing multimuddy interlayers remain notably absent in the literature. Moreover, unloading due to excavation can swiftly compromise the mechanical integrity and overall quality of the rock mass, consequently impacting the stability of slopes postexcavation. Therefore, this paper modeled the unstable slope excavated at a waste incineration power plant in Yuxi, Yunnan, using the finite element strength reduction method. This approach was employed to comprehensively simulate the entire process of artificial multilevel excavation in a bedding cataclastic rock mass high slope containing multimuddy interlayers. This study investigated the impact of multilevel artificial excavation on slope stability by thoroughly considering factors including alterations in slope morphology, unloading effects, and the degradation of geotechnical parameters. The research yielded the subsequent conclusions. Multimuddy interlayers were the key to the slope's instability. For slopes subjected to such multilevel excavation, efforts were made to minimize the exposure of muddy interlayers. Slopes above exposed muddy interlayers did not require additional support, while those below needed prioritized reinforcement. The likely instability mode of the actual slope was local destabilization leading to landslides. Furthermore, when using numerical simulation methods to study the impact of excavation disturbances on the stability of such slopes, it was necessary to consider the deterioration of geotechnical parameters to obtain results more reflective of actual conditions. A combined support scheme was proposed to address the issue of large deformation in the deep soft rock roadway at the Tangkou coal mine in Shanxi Province, China. This support scheme includes high constant resistance, elongation, and prestressed negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) bolts as the core element, along with metal mesh, shotcrete, cable, and bottom angle grouting bolt. A numerical simulation test using Flac3D was conducted to verify the feasibility of the NPR bolt-anchored soft rock roadway. In addition, a constitutive model for a rock mass supported by NPR bolts was established. The model is based on a parallel model of a generalised Kelvin body and elastic–viscous sliding body, which was used to reveal the mechanical behaviour of an NPR bolt-anchored rock mass. The results showed that the stress–strain relationship of the NPR bolt-anchored rock mass was obtained as a piecewise function consisting of the initial, slipping, and sticking stages. The stress and strain of the NPR bolt-anchored rock mass exhibit distinct patterns under different stress conditions. Specifically, when the stress remains constant, the strain of the NPR bolt-anchored rock mass increases continuously while the stress decreases in a step-like manner. On the other hand, when the stress increases linearly with time, the strain of the anchored rock mass increases linearly, while the stress of the anchorage rock mass increases slowly in a sawtooth pattern. Furthermore, a field support test fully confirmed the effective control of the NPR bolt support on the large deformations of soft rock roadways. These findings can guide further theoretical research, engineering design, and field applications of NPR bolt-anchored rock masses. With the rapid rise of infrastructure construction in southwestern mountainous areas of China, tunnel engineering has become increasingly frequent in crossing faults with strong activity. However, there has been a long-term lack of an effective theoretical method for identifying the stability and controlling the deformation of extremely weak surrounding rocks inside active faults. Therefore, this paper researched stability analysis and deformation control of a tunnel with extremely weak surrounding rocks caused by strike-slip fault activity. Firstly, uniaxial and triaxial compression tests were conducted on completely decomposed granite within active faults under drained and undrained conditions, and the mechanical properties of granite after desertification and argillization were analyzed. Then, based on the upper-bound limit theory and according to the relationship between the safety factor, instability trace, and geo-stress, a theoretical method to evaluate the stability of the unsupported surrounding rock under different geo-stress levels was proposed. Furthermore, a comprehensive deformation control method, including advanced support, excavation face reinforcement, and radial grouting, was proposed, and the applicability of this method was analyzed and verified through field mechanics and deformation measurements. The results showed that under the triaxial stress state, the post-peak stress drop characteristics of completely decomposed granite basically disappear, and the plastic deformation characteristics of rock become prominent. The comprehensive strengthening scheme has a significant deformation control effect, and the surrounding rock deformation can be reduced by over 65%. In addition, the pressure on the supporting structure will be more than 3.2 times higher with no reinforcement scheme. Sanding production of the underground gas storage (UGS) in the depleted reservoir will cause the decline of effective storage capacity, and the erosion of well string and auxiliary equipment, and other engineering problems. A deep understanding of the sanding production contributes to maintaining the injection and production capacity of gas storage and the long‐term safety of the UGS. In this paper, core samples of five main sedimentary microfacies were drilled from the UGS in middle China. The mechanical properties with different conditions of the moisture content in multi‐cycling injection–production process were tested. The critical drawdown pressure (CDP) calculation methods for the UGS were established based on the stress analysis near the wellbore and the Mogi–Coulomb criterion. Adopting the finite element method simulation on the geological model of the target UGS, the geo‐stress of the formation was calculated by inversed analysis and validated based on the Kaiser effect of rock. Then, the CDP of two target wells of the UGS were investigated. The effects of the water moisture and the cycling times of the injection–production process on the CDP were also analyzed. The geo‐stress distribution shows that the horizontal maximum principal stress ranges from 53 to 68 MPa, and the horizontal minimum principal stress is 46–58 MPa in the target reservoir section, and the vertical minimum principal stress is 69–77 MPa in the target reservoir. The calculated CDP changed with the types of the sedimentary microfacies in the range of [6.27, 8.77] MPa, in which the CDP of the mixed mud and sand flat sedimentary facies was the lowest. During the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the river valley from Yingxiu to Wenchuan experienced numerous landslides and became a prominent area of landslide complexes. The present large landslide complex near the earthquake epicenter consisted of Laohuzui slide 1, Laohuzui slide 2 and Douyaping slide. The scale, geology, morphology, sliding process, and failure mechanism of the landslide complex are analyzed by means of field investigation, aerial photograph and stereographic projection technique. Characteristics of these three slides including seismic response of slope, landslide debris, damage and potential failure are discussed: the convex slope and the upslope of fractured granitic rock at high altitude are highly prone to landsliding under earthquake; the high source altitude and long travel path determine grain sizes and the deposit angle of the slide debris; the landslide complex completely buries the G213 roadway and dams up the Minjiang River in these sections; after the earthquake, rainfall, aftershocks and river erosion may retrigger new failures, such as retrogressive slide of weathered fractured rock, colluvial landslide, debris flow, embankment failure and rockfall. The following are presented as suggested remedial measures to protect the roadway and stabilize the slope: the removing and trenching, protective concrete/rock blocks against erosion, retaining structure, rockfall stopping wall, rockfall restraining net, rock bolt, and the planting of vegetation. The time-dependent behavior and long-term stability of deep-buried tunnels in soft rocks have received lots of considerations in tunnel engineering and allied sciences. To better explore and deepen the engineering application of rock creep, extensive research studies are still needed, although fruitful outcomes have already been obtained in many related investigations. In this article, the Weilai Tunnel in China's Guangxi province is studied, taking its host rocks as the main research object. In fact, aiming at forecasting the time-varying deformation of this tunnel, a novel elasto-visco-plastic creep constitutive model with two variants is proposed, by exploiting the typical complex load–unload process of rock excavation. The model is well validated, and good agreements are found with the relevant experimental data. Moreover, the time-dependent deformation rules are properly established for the surrounding rocks, by designing two new closed-form solutions based on the proposed creep model and the Hoek–Brown criterion. To investigate the effects of the major creep parameters and the geological strength index (GSI) of the surrounding rocks on the time-dependent trend of the tunnel, an in-depth parametric study is carried out. It is shown that the convergence deformation of the surrounding rocks is remarkably influenced by the GSI and creep parameters. The convergence deformations calculated from the closed-form solutions conform well to the on-site monitoring data. In only 27 days after excavation, the creep deformation of the Weilai tunnel overtakes 400 mm, which is enormous. To guarantee the long-term stability of this tunnel, a robust support scheme and its long-term monitoring with appropriate remote sensors are strongly suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China's grotto temples have suffered from the erosion caused by shallow-surface peeling diseases for many years, and the common protection technology cannot solve such problems. Therefore, in view of the characteristics of wide distribution, small rock separation parts, and shallow layers of spalling diseases in cave temples, the microrockbolt anchoring technology was adopted for treatment. On the basis of the finite element method, the pulling process of microrockbolt-grouting body was simulated, the interface bonding mechanical property between microrockbolt and grouting materials was explored, and the influence of different rockbolt diameters and anchorage lengths on the microrockbolt pulling force was analyzed under monotonic load. Results show that all the failure forms are bolt pulling out failure. With the increase in anchorage length and reinforcement diameter, the axial stress in the anchoring section decreases gradually, and the stress decreases almost uniformly along the anchorage length. The increase in steel bar diameter causes the ultimate pulling force of microbolt to increase. With the increasing of anchorage length, the ultimate pulling force of microbolt increases, but the increase rate decreases. The average interface bond strength decreases when the anchorage length is 100-250 mm. The conclusions obtained in this study provide a significantly reference for the microrockbolt anchoring treatment in cave temples with shallow-surface spalling diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the Xiabeishan No.2 tunnel project of the Hang-Shao-Tai high-speed railway in China, the mechanical behavior of the anchor bolts for shallow super-large-span (SSLS) tunnels in weak rock mass is comprehensively investigated through laboratory tests, numerical simulation, and field tests. Firstly, an eight-month field test is conducted in the Xiabeishan No.2 tunnel, and it is discovered that the blasting vibration created by the construction of the middle pilot tunnel caused serious damage to the temporary support, seriously affecting the development of the bolt axial force and causing great construction risks. Then, the refined finite difference model of the SSLS tunnels is formulated, and a series of field and laboratory tests are conducted to acquire the calculation parameters. By comparing the monitored and simulated bolt axial force, the reliability of the numerical model is verified. Subsequently, the influence of the rock condition, construction scheme and bolt length on the mechanical behavior of anchor bolts is discussed. It is revealed that the rock grade significantly affects the bearing characteristics of anchor bolts. The construction scheme can greatly affect the magnitude and development mode of the bolt axial force, but the final distribution characteristics of the bolt axial force do not change regardless of the construction sequence. The axial force of the anchor bolts grows rapidly with the bolt length when the bolt length is within 18 m; meanwhile, when the bolt length exceeds 18 m, increasing the bolt length has a limited effect on the improvement in the bolt support performance. Active support using highly prestressed cable bolts and anchor cables has become a mainstream support technology for coal mine roadways. However, the ability of bolts and anchor cables to withstand transverse shear decreases with the prestress level, jeopardizing mining safety. This study proposed a technical solution to this problem featuring anchor cables enclosed in an axisymmetrical tube with a C-shaped cross-section (ACC), which are highly prestressed and can withstand high transverse shear. The ACC mechanical performance was tested in the #318 gas extraction roadway of the Shuangliu Coal Mine, China, characterized by extensive deformation under original support conditions. Theoretical analysis, laboratory tests, numerical simulation, and field tests were performed to analyze the shear mechanical properties of the ACC and anchor cables alone. The double shear test results revealed that the proposed ACC scheme increased the transverse shear resistance and stiffness by 10–25% and 20–40%, respectively. The FLAC3D numerical simulation showed that the roof-and-floor and rib-to-rib convergences decreased by 9.53 and 25.11%, respectively. The area of the stress concentration zone also decreased. Field monitoring showed that the ACC achieved good support performance. During the monitoring period, the maximum roof-and-floor and rib-to-rib displacements were 40 and 49 mm, respectively. Sustainable development in coal mining requires a continuous and efficient method of coal extraction. Research shows that gob-side entries retained through roof cutting retained gob-side (RCGE) are vital for improving mining efficiency, enhancing coal recovery rates, and enabling continuous production. However, the mechanism of surrounding rock deformation during close-distance co-mining of coal seams with this technique is not yet clear. For the Jiaokou coal mine in China, due to an unreasonable stagger distance between upper and lower working faces, the gob-side entries retained at the 9102 tailgate and 10102 headgate experience severe rock pressure, leading to significant prop damage and a sharp reduction in the cross-section of the entry. This greatly hampers the reuse of these entries. To investigate this issue, we established a model to study the stress distribution of surrounding rocks at different stagger distances (20 m, 40 m, 60 m, 80 m, and 120 m) through numerical simulation and optimized the support parameters for the retained entries. Our research found that when the subsidence of the roof in the upper coal seam exceeds 0.74 m but is less than 1.33 m, there is sliding instability in the mining body. When the subsidence exceeds 1.33 m, the mining body will rotate and deform, causing significant mining pressure within the retained entry. A stagger distance of 40 m between the upper and lower working faces can reduce pressure on the face during the mining of the lower coal seam. Extensive field measurements of rock pressure revealed that the damage rate of the single column in the gob-side entries of the upper and lower coal seams does not exceed 5% and 1%, respectively. In summary, this study provides a practical method to reduce damage to entries during the mining process, thereby increasing the continuous production capability of the coal mine. Excessive deformation has been observed during the construction of large-section (over 100 m2) tunnels in soft rock all over the world. A case study of deformation control for large-section tunnel construction in fractured carbonaceous slate was conducted. Xingzishan tunnel, China, was first excavated using the three-step reserved core soil excavation method (TRCSEM); however, this resulted in serious rockfalls at the tunnel arch and local collapse. To enhance the stability of the tunnel face, three different tunnel support systems with relatively stiff structures were proposed and tested along the tunnel chainage in the same rock condition, but all of them failed. The mechanism of the TRCSEM was revealed by field measurements, highlighting the significance of the stability of the upper bench of the tunnel face. In view of this, the three-step temporary inverted arch method (TTIAM) was employed and used with advance support. With this new method, the upper bench of the tunnel face was reinforced with fibreglass bolts to mitigate the deformation. Compared with the TRCSEM, the TTIAM effectively controlled large deformation at the tunnel face during the excavation in fractured carbonaceous slate with an acceptable construction cost. In China, soft rock roof makes up the majority of coal mine roof, yet it is easy to break due to low strength and poor integrity. As such, it is difficult for the traditional pillar-based roadway protection means and pillarless mining techniques to effectively control the roadway roof. In order to solve the problems with pillarless mining under soft rock roof conditions, using the 1510 working face of Xinyi Coal Mine as an example, a gob-side caving roadway forming (GSCRF) technique for broken immediate roof is developed. This paper discusses the adaptability and feasibility of this technology through theoretical modeling and on-site engineering testing. A roadway rock surrounding control scheme based on "cable + steel beams + yielding prop" is further designed, and field tests and monitoring are carried out. Field tests show that, during GSCRF of the 1510 working face, the maximum subsidence of the roof remains within 200 mm. The convergence of the two sides causes stabilization. The tension on the anchor cables is gradually becoming stable. The monitoring results show that the roadway has a good stress environment and the surrounding rock is effectively controlled. Compared with the traditional pillarless mining mode, this technology has the technical advantages of achieving complete elimination of coal pillars, reduced pressure on the roadway roof, and interference-free mining of the working face. At present, most studies of anchorage techniques for earthen architecture ruins are conducted so as to improve the anchor force, however, the damage caused to the ruins by anchor reinforcement has not been fully considered in practice and no special anchor technique has been applied to reinforce the small sliding mass. This paper summarizes the application and R&D of anchor rod techniques as applied to the protection of the Gaochang Ruins, Turpan, in China. Based on the reinforcement of the small sliding mass of the earthen historical ramparts, a new type of Geotechnical Filament Anchor (GFA) is designed. By changing six parameters, including anchorage length (L), GF thickness (H), bore diameter (D), slurry strength (S), GFA surface state (R) and inclination Angle (A), the tensile strength, failure mode, load displacement (P-S) relationship and strain (ζ-L) distribution characteristics are studied, and corresponding analysis is performed on the test data and phenomena. (1) A formula for the design value of the anchorage force N is presented. (2) Combining the data on the strain distribution at the GF-slurry interface under the action of N, the shear stress distribution model of the anchorage system is obtained. (3) Taking into account the soil mechanical properties of the above-mentioned ruins, the shear stress diffusion coefficient (α) is conceptualized, the formula for the shear strength of the grouting material is obtained, and the allowable ranges of L, D, H, R, and S determined. A new design is proposed for the application of anchorage techniques to earthen ruins in the context of protection of cultural relics, which promotes the design and calculation method described in this paper. The rheological properties of soft rocks should be considered in the long-term design and maintenance of deep-buried tunnels using uniaxial single-stage loading and graded incremental cyclic-loading methods. In this article, creep tests were performed on deep-buried silty mudstone from a specific water conveyance tunnel in China, with a buried depth in the range of 1650–2320 m and subjected to high in situ stress. The creep curves of silty mudstone under different loading stresses were obtained, showing evident rheological mechanical behavior under complicated external environmental conditions. Based on the classic Burgers rheological model, a new nonlinear creep model was established based on the creep properties of deep-buried silty mudstone in the project area. Typically, the designated rheological models for certain projects are unsuitable or inadequate. A nonlinear dashpot was calculated using the Levenberg–Marquardt (L–M) method coupled with origin to account for the deterioration trend in the strength of the silty mudstone over time. With the determined parameters, the modified Burgers model exhibited good qualitative consistency with field monitoring data. The user-defined material mechanical behavior (UMAT) subroutine of the modified Burgers model was successfully achieved after it was implemented in the numerical code ABAQUS. Based on the full-rheological effect, the proper supporting time of a deep-buried tunnel was studied, and it was proposed that a second lining should be cast in situ approximately 150 days after the excavation of the tunnel. The outcomes of the proposed modified rheological model can accurately represent the creep behavior of deep-buried silty mudstones in a specific engineering instance. Since the western region of China, which is typical of extraordinary resource endowments, has gradually emerged as the major mining zone in China, the mining of thick coal seams and roadways with coal-rock composite roof have become more and more common in this region. However, it is extremely difficult to realize safe and effective maintenance and control of such roadways due to the differences in natural endowments of coal-rock masses. With the roadway with coal-rock composite roof of Hulusu Coal Mine in western China as the engineering background, experiment research on large-scale similarity model was conducted through comprehensive measures such as the pneumatic loading system, the surrounding rock stress monitoring system, the roadway deformation monitoring system, the bolt load monitoring system, and the displacement field monitoring system in this paper. According to the results of the experiment, the control effects of the three support systems on the roadway with coal-rock composite roof were significantly different. When the single support of short anchor bolts was applied, the comparatively low initial anchor-hold failed to constrain the initial micro deformation of the roof. Consequently, wide-range fractures of the roof were triggered at a loading pressure of 0.8 MPa. In the meanwhile, the deep surrounding rocks witnessed a downward inflection point in stress, accompanied by the possibility of the collapse of the thin-layer anchorage zone at any time. As for the support combining both short anchor bolts and long anchor cables, though a reinforced effect on the bolt anchorage zone could be achieved with the help of the cables, the active reinforcement capacity of the bolt was limited. The bolt anchorage zone was the first to be damaged at a loading pressure of 0.9 MPa, which would subsequently affect the effective bearing capacity of the deep surrounding rocks. In the application of the single support of high-strength long anchor bolts, the long bolts with high pre-tightening force were able to lock multiple groups of coal-rock strata to form a thick-layer anchorage bearing structure capable of withstanding a load as high as 1.0 MPa. The crash and collapse of the coal wall eventually caused the subsidence of the roof. Based on the intense dynamic load experiment and the feedbacks of engineering application outcomes in the field, it was concluded that the high-pretension thick-layer (HPTL) anchoring technology can effectively constrain the deformation of roadways with coal-rock composite roof with favorable application outcomes. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have been used in many underground coal mines in China with high constructive efficiency, sound equipment integration and low cost. A recent application of TBM in Yuandian No.2 Coal Mine in Huaibei, China, has shown that the surrounding rockmass spalled severely in stratum impacted by multiple joint sets. To analyze this problem, a new 3D ubiquitous-multiple-joint (UMJ) model was proposed in the present research, which comprised a rock matrix and multiple sets of joints according to geological conditions. Then, the yielding and deformation of the roadway excavated by TBM were analyzed. The results showed that the plastic zones, stress states and displacement of surrounding rockmass were significantly affected by the orientation of joint sets. The results could well indicate failure characteristics of the in-situ roadway and showed the advantages of UMJ model to simulate the excavation in jointed rockmass. The key factors influencing the roadway stability were discussed by the UMJ model. To explore the stability analyses and control methods for surrounding rocks in deep hard rock shafts, this paper is based on field engineering geological surveys and laboratory rock mechanics tests and relies on the main shaft being constructed in the Shaling Gold Mine of China as the engineering background. The quality of the rock mass is evaluated by the Q system, rock mass rating (RMR) and geological strength index (GSI). The mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock mass of the shaft are calculated by using the generalized Hoek–Brown failure criterion, and the main support system is determined based on the rock mass classification system. Based on the finite element method, a two-dimensional plane strain model is constructed to analyze and evaluate the deformation and plastic region range of surrounding rocks for different support systems. On this basis, considering the dilatancy and plastic softening characteristics of hard rock masses, an analytical solution of the stress, strain and plastic region radius of hard rock around shafts in homogeneous media is proposed. Finally, the plastic region of the surrounding rock is measured by the P-wave velocity test method. The results show that after considering the dilatancy and plastic softening characteristics of the rock mass, the numerical simulation, theoretical analytical solution and measured results are basically consistent, and the proposed support system can effectively ensure the stability of the shaft. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are a cutting-edge excavating equipment, but are barely applied in underground coal mines. For TBM excavation projects involving the Zhangji coal mine, the surrounding rock properties, stress field, cross section geometry, as well as the excavation-induced stress path of TBM-excavated coal mine roadways are different from those of traditional tunnels or roadways. Consequently, traditional roadway supporting technologies and experiences cannot be relied on for this project. In order to research an appropriate supporting pattern for a TBM-excavated coal mine roadway, first of all, the constitutive model of roadway surrounding rocks was derived, and a rock failure criterion was proposed based on rock mechanical tests. Secondly, a three-dimension finite element model was established and computer simulations under three different supporting patterns were conducted. Stress redistribution, roadway convergence, and excavation damage zone ranges of surrounding rocks under three different support patterns were analyzed and an optimal support design of the TBM-excavated roadway was made based on simulation results. During roadway excavation, convergence gauge and rock bolt dynamometers were installed for monitoring roadway convergence and the axial forces of rock bolts. As the hydropower development strategies of China continue to be implemented, a host of large hydropower projects have been completed or are being constructed in southwest China. During construction of the Jinchuan hydropower station, this study examined the stability of the surrounding rock during the excavation and unloading of hydraulic tunnels under demanding geological conditions. Microseismic (MS) monitoring technology was employed to monitor the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock online and in real time, based on engineering geological data and site surveys. To analyze the stability of the surrounding rock in the spillway tunnel and to study the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics of MS events, source parameter analysis and numerical modeling were performed. The 3D finite-difference numerical modeling software FLAC3D was used to simulate the mechanical response of the surrounding rock during the excavation and unloading of the spillway tunnel and the diversion tunnel. The numerical modeling results were compared with the monitoring results and site surveys to determine the failure mechanisms of the surrounding rock during the construction and unloading of the hydraulic tunnels. In order to solve the problem on the serious deformation and failure of the rock column at the intersection of large cross sections in Shiyakou coal mine, based on field engineering geomechanics analysis, theoretical analysis, and three-dimensional numerical simulation, combined with the mutual coupling between the constant resistance coupling support cable and surrounding rock, a dual-control constant-resistance coupling control technology with high prestressed constant resistance coupling support cable as the core solution is proposed. The field engineering practice and field monitoring data show that the dual-control constant resistance coupling support control technology has a good control effect on the deformation of the rock column at the large cross section intersection of the deep soft rock roadway and can be effectively used in the engineering practice. Geotechnical issues due to inappropriate support designs of underground drift will affect mining developments and production. The aim of this study was to provide a systematic support design method for deep hard-rock drifts in China. Field investigations and laboratory studies were carried out on the engineering geological properties of the rock masses along drifts in the Sanshandao Gold Mine. Potential wedge analysis and safety factors were determined using Unwedge software. The rock mass properties and support requirements were analyzed accordingly using different rock mass classification systems; then, an updated combined support system including rock bolts, wire mesh, and shotcrete was proposed. Numerical methods were used to quantify the plastic zone and principal stress of the drift, the plastic zone was reduced, and the rock stress state was improved after installing the support systems. Field monitoring data also confirmed that the updated support system prevented excessive rock mass deformation in drift. The detailed analysis of the initial ground stress distribution law is an important work for the safety of tunnel construction and operation. Especially, the high ground stress phenomenon in the deep-buried tunnel area is common, which has a great impact on the tunnel construction. Based on the on-site measured ground stress data, the analysis of the initial ground stress field by numerical simulation and multiple linear regression is mainly described in this study. Following the comparison and selection of three coefficient estimation methods for the regression equation, the best regression method is selected for inversion and verification. The distribution characteristic of the initial ground stress at different buried depths of the tunnel line is obtained. The inversion results of the initial ground stress in a tunnel area, in China, show that the lateral pressure coefficient gradually decreases with the buried depth increasing, while the overall lateral pressure coefficient is in the range of 1.0–2.0, showing a more significant horizontal tectonic. At the area where the tunnel passes through the fault, a small amount of horizontal tectonic stress is released. The ratio of horizontal principal stress to vertical principal stress is smaller than that on both sides, which is different from the distribution characteristic of lateral pressure coefficient without the impact of fault. It shows that faults have a great influence on ground stress. The lateral pressure coefficient in the area near the fault must be determined according to the on-site measured results. A method of load calculation in a tunnel was adopted in consideration of the state of covering depth. Due to the macropore characteristics of loess soil, the existing demarcation regulations of deep and shallow tunnels are inappropriate for large-section and shallow loess in highway tunnels. To determine the load of large-section loess tunnel and provide a proper reference for structural design, the theoretical basis for distinguishing depth of deep and shallow tunnels, as well as the characteristics of common calculation methods for surrounding rock load on depth, were analyzed. Through statistical analysis and significance analysis, the significance of the variation of surrounding rock pressure with cover depth was studied. Correlation analysis was carried out on significant results to fit the relationship between cover depth and surrounding rock pressure. The results showed that the surrounding rock pressure varied linearly with the cover depth, and the surrounding rock pressure was about 0.3 times the initial pressure in deep tunnels. The surrounding rock pressure of shallow tunnels did not change significantly with the cover depth, and the surrounding rock pressure was loose pressure. Disturbance stresses can cause deformation and damage to a tunnel's rock, potentially threatening the mine's safety. This paper investigates the effects of disturbance damage on the main inclined shaft due to the excavation of an electromechanical chamber in a deep inclined shaft at Yuxi Mine. Specifically, a numerical model was constructed using Midas GTX NX and Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua in Three Dimensions (FLAC3D) to match the actual engineering conditions, and to reveal the stresses and deformations in the surrounding rock of the main inclined shaft before and after the excavation of the main inclined shaft, the electromechanical chamber and the head chamber. The results revealed that the surrounding rock stress around the main inclined shaft is significantly influenced by excavation disturbance. The bottom bulge occurred due to the unstable vertical and shear stresses in the bottom coal bed moving into free space. After the excavation of the electromechanical chamber, the maximum displacement of the floor can be increased from 0.35468 m to 0.64301 m, nearly doubled, and a large area of surrounding rock deformation occurs in the inclined shaft falling roadway. Affected by excavation disturbance, the maximum deformation of floor can reach 1.06 m, with a wide fluctuation range. The main area of damage to the surrounding rock was identified, except for the main inclined shaft, which occurred near the intersection of the inclined shaft and the drop level location. This area is mainly affected by superimposed tensile stress damage, prone to large area floor heave and spalling. The research content is expected to provide certain theoretical support in taking measures to deal with the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock in a main inclined shaft. The accelerated creep plays an important role in the disasters of soft-rock tunnels under high stress. However, most of previous studies only involved attenuation creep and uniform creep. Large deformation disasters of soft rock occurred during the tunneling process in the Qianzhou–Sanyangchuan Tunnel, Gusu Province, China. In the paper, we developed the nonlinear generalized Nishihara rheological model with non-stationary parameter creep (NGNRM) to simulate the accelerated creep behaviors of soft rocks under high stress, and implemented it in ABAQUS, to reveal the mechanism of large deformation of soft rock. We proposed the multi-objective back analysis method of surrounding rock mechanical parameters based on the eXtreme Gradient Boosting and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II. In addition, the orthogonal test design method was used to determine the main parameters affecting the displacement of the tunnel. Using the proposed method, we can evaluate the large deformation mechanism of deep soft rock tunnels, and scientifically determine when to reinforce to prevent a large deformation disaster of the tunnel. In order to alleviate the relationship between mining and roadway, the 3204 working face and the 3206 roadway in Shanxi Taitou coal mine are taken as an example, and the width of mining and the support parameters of mining while reversing mining and excavation under dynamic pressure are optimized. The research includes field investigations, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and field tests. Based on the characteristics of roof fracture and the distribution of coal pillar stresses that determine the coal pillar is 18.7 m wide, the control scheme of mining while reversing mining and excavation was developed; the stress of coal pillar and the characteristics of roadway deformation and failure are summarized. By means of FLAC3D numerical simulation software, the influence of coal pillar widths and different mining positions on the stability of roadway surrounding rock are discussed. The asymmetric support structure of trapezoidal roadway is proposed as the core support, and the support scheme of dense bolts and anchor cables is proposed. The support of the 3206 return airway is composed of bolt, anchor cable, and anchor mesh, combined with M-shaped steel belt and steel beam. Through the research on the current situation of roadway support, the support scheme is optimized to make the 3206 return airway meet the production requirements, which provides a new breakthrough for roadway support under dynamic pressure in deep mines in China. A comparative experiment was carried out to discuss the detectability and influence factors on heterogeneous distributions of the stress field for underground panels in North China. The panels are situated in the center and the eastern margin of the North China plate, having similar layouts and stress states. Seismic surveys were performed before coal extractions, and travel-time topographies for refracted P-waves from stiff roofs were computed with a ray-based inversion. The tomographic distributions of P-wave velocity were interpreted by a K-means clustering to categorize the stress fields. The estimated high-stress anomalies show strong correlations with the monitored dynamic roof ruptures and high-energy microseisms. Besides, the relationship among high-stress areas, geological factors, and mined-out voids is also discussed through feature comparisons, Monte–Carlo simulations, and point process statistics. Our results show that the curvature variations and the mined-out voids are dominant factors that affect the heterogeneous distribution of the stress field in the panels. However, the leading causes of the curvature variations in the small-scale panels are different, but they do follow the large-scale regional patterns of the geological regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aiming at the problem that many high-strength rock bolts fail at the thread part without obvious decrease in diameter, analytical analysis on the stress status of the thread was performed. The results show that stress concentration due to the change in diameter and self-locking of the domed washer due to inappropriate rotation center of the washer worsen the mechanical status of rock bolts. Laboratory tests on fractured threads was carried out, chemical analyses were performed on the fractured threads, the effect of the varied installation angles on the bending fracturing of rock bolts was tested. The mechanical status and the stress distribution in the thread was carried out using finite element method,and the most unfavorable position of the rock bolts was identified. Field tests were performed in the roadways suffering severe dynamic mining-induced stresses in the Zhangcun Coal Mine, many optimization plans were proposed to solve the rock bolt fracturing issue and to relieve the effects of the unfavorable forces on the rod of rock bolts. This study investigates the roof collapse accident that occurred at the No.15028 tailgate of XinJing coal mine in China. In-situ observations, numerical simulation and laboratory test are conducted to analyse the gradual deterioration of the roof strata. The field observation of the fractures, separations, pretension load and rock bolts loading are conducted during the process of separation. The analysis results indicate that owing to the torque value of rock bolts below 150 N·m (pretension load was 29 kN) and incompatibility of reinforcement fittings of rock bolts, the pretension load failed to solidify the surrounding rocks effectively. Obvious separations were identified at rock depths ranging from 0 to 2.6 m. Simulation results revealed that different flexural deflections caused horizontal displacement in rocks, which is positively correlated with the vertical separation. In weak interlayers of rocks, the severe horizontal displacements led to shear fracture of cable bolts, resulting in roof collapse. An increasing rock bolt pretension load can reduce the horizontal displacement of the rock stratum beyond the anchorage zone, which can lower the shear force of cable bolts by 30% and reduce the shear fracture risk of the cable bolts. Mechanical compatibility tests of the surrounding rock support system are conducted to develop a practical and reasonable reinforcement fittings to increase the pretension load of the rock bolts. Based on the research, a series of control methods are developed to enhance the roof stability. To recommend the excavation procedures and design parameters for underground powerhouses, excavation procedures of fifty-one underground powerhouses in China were summarized and analyzed based on in situ stress conditions. Firstly, the complex stress environment in China was introduced and fifty-one underground powerhouses with their engineering scale, size, lithology, rock classification and in situ stress level were listed in detail. Subsequently, to evaluate the influence of in situ stress levels on excavation procedure design, the correlation between excavation procedures and in situ stress level in three main excavation zones were analyzed accordingly. Moreover, to provide the excavation design recommendations, the strength–stress ratio (SSR) was promoted to analyze and recommend the design parameters, and the blasting excavation design based on the stress transient unloading control was also supplemented. The results show that excavation procedures have different priorities under different in situ stress levels, and the design parameters show an obvious relationship with in situ stress levels. Moreover, the excavation procedure parameters are suggested to adjust accordingly under different SSR. The discussion of influencing factors and specification ensures its rationality and accuracy. To overcome the problems existing in the application of the traditional stability control method of the surrounding rock of deep shafts, in this paper, a stability control method for the surrounding rock of deep shafts is presented based on the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) and the Norwegian Method of Tunnelling (NMT), and a support design method of deep shafts is also proposed. In addition, taking a deep shaft construction project as an example, the support design process of a deep shaft is presented: the engineering geology and in situ stress of the deep shaft are collected and processed to evaluate the rock mass quality with the Q-system, rock mass rating (RMR), and geological strength index (GSI). The strength and deformation parameters of the intact rock are obtained via laboratory tests, and the rock mass mechanical parameters are calculated using the generalized Hoek–Brown method. Then, a variety of support design methods based on rock mass classification systems are applied to determine the primary and permanent support, and the support time is obtained on the basis of a convergence-confinement analysis and engineering experience. A two-dimensional plane-strain model is constructed to analyze and evaluate the safety of the proposed support system, incorporating the major geological discontinuities and non-hydrostatic in situ stress state prior to excavation. The coal seams in western China are predominantly formed in the lower Jurassic, with generally low strength and poor cementability, which are markedly different from the coal seams in eastern China. In addition, mining layout has an important impact on the fissure development pattern and height in weak-cemented overburden. Thus, investigating the relationship between fissure development pattern and mining layout is of great significance to mining safety. In this study, the mechanical properties of coal and rock strata in no. 3 mining area of Saier Mine, Xingjiang, China, were tested. And a numerical simulation was performed by using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) distinct element numerical simulation software. The different working face layout schemes were performed to investigate the variation patterns of overburden fissure development height, and coal pillar stress and deformation. The simulation results indicate that as the δW (ratio of the working face width to coal pillar width) increases, the fissure development height gradually increases and the coal pillar horizontal displacement, vertical stress, and horizontal stress first decrease and then increase. Four empirical equations for computing the fissure development height and the horizontal displacement, vertical stress, and horizontal stress of coal pillars were obtained by using the regression analysis method. What is more, all the correlations between the above independent variables and δW can be expressed as quadratic functions. The equations can not only be used as reference criteria for the working face layout design of A3 coal seam in no. 3 mining area of Saier Mine, but also are of great guiding significance to the safety of multiple-seam mining actions under confined water in western China. Roadways in thick coal seams are widely distributed in China. However, due to the relatively developed cracks and brittleness of coal, the support failure of thick-coal-seam roadways frequently occurs. Therefore, the study of bolt failure characteristics and new anchoring technology is very important for the safety control of thick-coal-seam roadways. Based on field observations, the failure mechanism of selected roadway failures under distinct conditions at three representative coal mines in eastern and western China was analyzed. Recommendations are provided for roadway safety control. The results show that the strength and dimension of the anchoring structure in the coal roof of thick-coal-seam roadways are the decisive factors for the resistance of the roadway convergence and stress disturbance. The thick anchoring structure in the roof constructed by flexible long bolts can effectively solve the problem of support failure caused by insufficient support length of traditional rebar bolts under the condition of extra-thick coal roof and thick coal roof with weak interlayers. Large squeezing deformation of layered soft rock tunnel under high geo-stress has a significant time-dependent deformation behavior. In this paper, we studied the deformation mechanism during the construction period of deep-buried soft-rock tunnel by means of a combination of field observations and a numerical method. First, a new classification criterion for large deformations based on the power exponent variation law between the deformation and the strength-stress ratio is proposed. Then, the initial damage tensor reflecting the bedding plane (joint) distribution and an equivalent damage evolution equation derived from the viscoplastic strain are introduced based on the geometric research method, i.e., a new rheological damage model (RDL model) of layered soft rock is established consisting of elastic, viscous, viscoelastic, viscoplastic and plastic elements. A field test was conducted on the Maoxian tunnel in Sichuan province, southwestern China, which is in broken phyllite (layered soft rock) under high geo-stress. The tunnel has experienced large deformation due to serious squeezing pressure, thus we adopted double primary support method to overcome the supporting structure failure problems. The rheological parameters of phyllite in the Maoxian tunnel were recognized by using SA-PSO optimization, and the RDL model does a good job in describing the time-dependent deformation behavior of a layered soft-rock tunnel under high geo-stress. Thus, the RDL model was used to investigate the supporting effect and bearing mechanism of the double primary support method. Compared with the single primary support method, the surrounding rock pressure, secondary lining force, surrounding rock deformation, and the depth of the damage to the rock mass was reduced by 40%–60% after the double primary support method was used. Large deformation has always been a focus and difficult issue in the construction of deep-buried tunnels in squeezing rock. Previous studies mainly focused on the large deformation of medium and small span railway/highway tunnels in soft ground. However, there are limited researches on the large deformation control methods for large-span (three-lane) highway tunnels constructed in unfavorable geological environment. Based on the Lianchengshan Tunnel of the Baoji-Hanzhong expressway in Shaanxi Province, China, this paper studied the deformation behaviors and mechanical mechanisms of a large-span tunnel excavated in chlorite schist formation with single primary lining method and double primary lining method by in-situ test and numerical simulation. The achieved results indicate that the double primary lining method is much more effective than that of the single primary lining method in restraining the deformation of surrounding rock, and the maximum vertical displacement and horizontal convergence are reduced by 67% and 66%, respectively. The support method of double HK200b-type steel sets combined with large-diameter foot reinforcement bolt (FRB) and deep invert could effectively control the large deformation of the case tunnel, which effectively avoided the supporting structure failure, repeated clearance invasion and multiple reshaping work caused by the single primary lining method and conformed to the energy-saving construction concept of "no clearance interfering, no support reshaping" of tunnels in squeezing ground. Simulation analysis of surrounding rock deformation, supporting structure stress and plastic zone distribution was performed to evaluate the support effect of the two deformation-controlled methods. Finally, the deformation and stress characteristic curves of rock-support of the two deformation-controlled methods were established, which revealed the supporting mechanism of double primary linings for large-span tunnels in chlorite schist.
