Patients with severe coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19 pneumonia) may have many sequelae, which seriously affect their quality of life and work. Here, we report a case of infection in China, reviewed the course, treatment, and rehabilitation of a patient suffering from severe COVID-19 pneumonia, and collected his examination reports, including chest CT, laboratory examination results, lung function examination, sleep monitoring report, sex hormones, sperm morphology and activity. The patient's antiviral immunoglobulin G (IgG) continued to be positive for more than 11 months, and his small airway function was abnormal, and he suffered from respiratory problems (cough, chest pain, chest tightness, and shortness of breath), unstructured sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome, and nocturnal sleep hypoxemia. His abnormal sperm rate increased obviously, and sperm activity decreased obviously. Patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia may have respiratory sequela, the abnormal sperm rate is obviously increased, and IgG positive can last for a long time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes in older adults; however, the relationship between PEF and frailty remains uncertain, and this study investigated the relationship between PEF and frailty within an olderly Asian demographic., Methods: Data were sourced from the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Individuals in the study, all 60 years or older, underwent baseline PEF assessments quantified as standardized residual (SR) percentile values. The evaluation of frailty was conducted based on the criteria established by Fried. Participants without frailty at the outset were tracked over a four-year period, during which the relationships between PEF and frailty were examined through logistic regression and discrete-time Cox regression analyses., Results: Among 5,060 participants, cross-sectional analysis revealed that the prevalence of frailty was 2-3 times higher in the lower 10-49th and < 10th SR percentile groups compared to the 80-100th SR percentile group. The longitudinal study corroborated these results, showing an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 2.01 (95% CI, 1.15-3.51) for PEF SR percentiles below the 10th, in contrast to those between the 80th and 100th percentiles., Conclusion: PEF independently predicts and determines frailty in older adults. Declines in PEF greater than expected are associated with the development of frailty. Introduction: Respiratory dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) could present in the early stage and worsen in the late stages. These changes could be a factor affecting the ability of daily living and quality of life of patients with PD. The primary objective of this study was to assess the respiratory function and its association with motor function in patients with different stages of PD., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Huashan Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, China. The study included 65 patients diagnosed with PD (the Hoehn and Yahr scale between 1 and 4) and 20 healthy individuals of similar age, gender, weight, and height. The ventilatory function was assessed using the spirometry. Motor function was evaluated using subscale III of the United Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS-III). After confirming the normality of data distribution, we performed one-way ANOVA with a Tukey's post hoc test., Results: Compared with the healthy individuals, there was no statistical significance in forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) in the H&Y 1 group and H&Y 2 group (p &gt; 0.05) but reduced peak expiratory flow (PEF) in the H&Y 2 group (p = 0.002). Reduced FVC, FEV1, and PEF was seen in the H&Y 3 group (p = 0.002, p = 0.001, and p = 0.0001, respectively). Reduced FVC, FEV1, PEF, and FEF25-75% was seen in the H&Y 4 group (p = 0.001, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, and p = 0.025, respectively). The correlation analysis revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between FVC and UPDRS-III scores (r = -0.248, p = 0.046), disease duration (r = -0.276, p = 0.026), H&Y scale (r = -0.415, p = 0.001). FEV1 was negatively correlated with UPDRS-III scores (r = -0.277, p = 0.025), disease duration (r = -0.291, p = 0.019), H&Y scale (r = -0.434, p = 0.0001). FEF25-75% was negatively correlated with disease duration (r = -0.247, p = 0.047), H&Y scale (r = -0.278, p = 0.025)., Conclusion: Our findings revealed that respiratory impairment is present in moderate and advanced PD patients, and directly related to the severity of the disease. Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in western Asia area and the full range of the long-term sequelae of HFMD remains poorly described. We conducted a retrospective hospital-based cohort study of HFMD patients with central nervous system (CNS) complications caused by EV-A71 or CV-A16 between 2010 and 2016. Patients were classified into three groups, including CNS only, autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation, and cardiorespiratory failure. Neurologic examination, neurodevelopmental assessments, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and lung function, were performed at follow up. Of the 176 patients followed up, 24 suffered CNS only, 133 ANS dysregulation, and 19 cardiorespiratory failure. Median follow-up period was 4.3 years (range [1.4-8.3]). The rate of neurological abnormalities was 25% (43 of 171) at discharge and 10% (17 of 171) at follow-up. The rates of poor outcome were significantly different between the three groups of complications in motor (28%, 38%, 71%) domain (p=0.020), but not for cognitive (20%, 24%, 35%), language (25%, 36%, 41%) and adaptive (24%, 16%, 26%) domains ( p  = 0.537, p  = 0.551, p  = 0.403). For children with ventilated during hospitalization, 41% patients (14 of 34) had an obstructive ventilatory defect, and one patient with scoliosis had mixed ventilatory dysfunction. Persistent abnormalities on brain MRI were 0% (0 of 7), 9% (2 of 23) and 57% (4 of 7) in CNS, ANS and cardiorespiratory failure group separately. Patients with HFMD may have abnormalities in neurological, motor, language, cognition, adaptive behaviour and respiratory function. Long-term follow-up programmes for children's neurodevelopmental and respiratory function may be warranted.

Objectives: To explore the health effects of indoor/outdoor carbonaceous compositions in PM 2.5 on pulmonary function among healthy students living in the local university campus., Methods: Daily peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1 ) were measured among 37 healthy students in the morning and evening for four two-week periods. Concurrent concentrations of indoor and outdoor PM 2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5μm), carbonaceous components in PM 2.5 , ambient temperature, and relative humidity in the study area were also obtained. Mixed-effects model was applied to evaluate the associations between carbonaceous components and lung function. Different lags for the carbonaceous components were investigated., Results: In single-pollutant model, a 10 μg/m 3 increase of indoor and outdoor EC (elemental carbon) associated with -3.93 (95% CI : -6.89, -0.97) L/min and -3.21 (95% CI : -5.67, -0.75) L/min change in evening PEF at lag 0 day, respectively. Also, a 10 μg/m 3 increase of indoor and outdoor POC (primary organic carbon) concentration was significantly associated with -5.82 (95% CI : -10.82, -0.81) L/min and -7.32 (95% CI : -12.93, -1.71) L/min change of evening PEF at lag 0 day. After adjusting total mass of PM 2.5 , indoor EC consistently had a significant adverse impact on evening PEF and FEV 1 at lag3 day and a cumulative effect at lag0-3 day., Conclusions: This study suggests that carbonaceous components in PM 2.5 indeed have impacts on pulmonary function among healthy young adults especially on evening PEF. Thus, the local mitigation strategies on pollution are needed.
