An ancient, large-scale river-damming landslide, located 4 km on the upper stream of the dam site of the Batang Hydropower Station, southeastern Tibetan Plateau, China, was investigated herein. We used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey, field investigations, geology and topography maps, borehole surveys, basic laboratory testing, and geological dating to reveal evidence of this river-damming landslide and its cause mechanism. The studied landslide had an estimated volume of 3.5 × 107 m3, blocked the valley, and formed a dam > 170 m in height. A large quantity of lacustrine sediments was discovered on both banks upstream of the residual landslide dam; this had a maximum thickness of 30 m, mainly comprised of fine sand and silt, with particle sizes of 0.01–0.25 mm, and demonstrated that the landslide blocked the Jinsha River. There was a clear geological structural dependence of the slope failure in the landslide area, dominated by a combination of sliding-toppling failure on cataclinal slopes. The slope instability mode was slip-controlled toppling failure within a thin-layered biotite quartz schist that exhibited inferior mechanical properties. The head scarp developed along a bedding plane that dipped steeply in the same direction as the slope. The upstream and downstream lateral scarps formed along the joint sets J2 and J3, respectively, which intersected with the bedding plane, forming a wedge and facilitating slope instability. Rapid river incision, intense tectonic activity, a high and steep slope, and thin-layered steeply dipping strata were the controlling factors for the occurrence of this landslide, all contributing to slope failure. On the basis of our comprehensive analysis of paleoearthquakes, paleoclimate, and geological dating of the landslide, we conclude that this ancient river-damming landslide event was likely triggered by a strong earthquake related to activity on the Xiongsong‒Suwalong fault in the Late Holocene. The region of Yiluo in North China witnessed the development of social complexity in the Neolithic period and the emergence of the first Chinese state society in the early Bronze Age. However, the agricultural economies in the Neolithic–Bronze Age periods of this region and its influence on the social complexity in this area have not been adequately understood, owing to the relative lack of evidence from archeobotany, chronology, and stable isotope analysis in this region. Archeobotanical and isotopic evidence, together with chronological data from the Tumen site, reveals that the complexity of the agricultural economy composed of millet and rice appeared during the late Yangshao period in the Yiluo region and became more intensified in the following Longshan and Bronze Age periods. During the Yangshao and Longshan periods, environmental factors such as landform and hydrology were likely important factors for the diverse agricultural patterns. The complexity of the agricultural economy has an influence on settlement hierarchy and population growth, suggesting that the rise and intensification of the complex agricultural economy was an important driving force in societal development in the Yiluo region. On May 12, 2019, a landslide occurred near a construction site of a reservoir dam along the left bank of the Wulong River, Qinghai Province, China. Video footage showed that the entire failure process of the landslide lasted for 15 min. Although an excavator that parked on the foundation pit was buried and the Wulong River was blocked, this landslide did not cause any casualties. Based on field investigations, 3D laser scanning, unmanned aerial vehicle observations, and borehole surveys, this study aims to reveal the cause and initiation mechanisms of the landslide. The landslide developed on a typical dip slope with thick-bedded conglomerates intercalated with a few mudstone layers. The slide mass mainly consisted of conglomerates with a dip angle varying from 20 to 40°, failing along bedding plane contacts with the underlying muddy intercalation. Numerous tension cracks had developed in the upper part of the slope due to stress relaxation during the process of bank slope evolution associated with rapid river incision. These cracks damaged the integrity of the rock mass and promoted rapid rainfall infiltration. The water infiltrated into the slope and deteriorated the mechanical properties of the rock mass, which resulted in long-term deterioration of the slope stability conditions. In addition, the temperature of Tongren County was below zero for 5 months in a year, hence the freeze–thaw cycle of the water filled in the cracks would have reduced the shear strength further. There were 10 days of continuous rainfall before the landslide occurred, and the cumulative precipitation in 2018 and 2019 was also significantly more than that of previous years. Three primary factors are involved in the landslide event: (1) thick-bedded conglomerates intercalated with a few mudstone layers with contrasts in strength, (2) development of numerous relaxation cracks, and (3) long-term rainfall accumulation. Background: A steady progress on schistosomiasis control in the Peoples' Republic of China (P.R. China) was achieved and broadened into the twelve-year medium and long term national plan (MLNP) which marled the implementation of an integrated control strategy across all endemic areas in P.R. China in 2004. To understand the endemic trends of schistosomiasis to assess the effectiveness of an integrated strategy, we conducted an analysis of schistosomiasis surveillance data spanned from 2005 to 2015. Methods: The schistosomiasis sentinel surveillance data from sentinel sites were collected and analyzed from 2005 to 2015. In these sentinel sites, residents aged 6 years or above were screened annually by indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA), while only antibody positives were followed by stool examination either Kato-katz method (KK) and/or hatching technique (HT). Domestic animals raised in sentinel sites were examined by HT for confirming the infection of schistosomes. Snail investigation was conducted each year through systematic sampling method combined with environmental sampling method. The snails collected from field were tested by microscopic dissection method. The infection rates of schistosomes in residents, domestic animals and snails, as well as the indicators reflecting the snails' distribution were calculated and analyzed. ANOVA analysis was used to examine the changes of the number of eggs per gram feces in population and Chi-square test was used to examine any change in proportions among groups. Results: A total of 148 902 residents from sentinel sites attended this study and 631 676 blood samples were examined by IHA test during the 11 covered years. The annual average antibody positive rates presented a significant decrease trends, from 17.48% (95% CI: 17.20–17.75%) in 2005 to 5.93% (95% CI: 5.71–6.15%) (χ2 = 8890.47, P < 0.001) in 2015. During 2005–2015, the average infection rate of schistosomes in residents declined from 2.07% (95% CI: 1.96–2.17%) to 0.13% (95% CI: 0.09–0.16%), accompanied by significant decrease of infection intensity in population. In 2015, the stool positives were only found in farmers, fishermen and boatmen with infection rate of 0.16% (95% CI: 0.11–0.20%), 0.17% (95% CI: 0–0.50%) respectively. The infection rate of schistosomes in domestic animals dropped from 9.42% (538/5711, 95% CI: 8.66–10.18%) to 0.08% (2/2360, 95% CI: 0–0.20%) from 2005 to 2015. Infections were found in eight species of domestic animals at the beginning of surveillance while only two cattle were infected in 2015. Totally 98 ha of new snail habitats were found, while 94.90% (93/98) distributed in lake and marshland regions. The percentage of frames with snails decreased from 16.96% (56 884/33 5391, 95% CI: 16.83–17.09%) in 2005 to 4.28% (18 121/423 755, 95% CI: 4.22–4.34%) in 2014, with a slightly increase in 2015. Meanwhile, the infection rate of schistosomes in snails was decreased from 0.26% (663/256 531, 95% CI: 0.24–0.28%) to zero during 2005–2015. Conclusions: The infection rate of schistosomes declined significantly, providing evidence that the goal of the MLNP was achieved. Elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem defined as WHO was also reached in P.R. China nationwide. Aims Change in nitrogen (N) availability regulates phosphorus (P) acquisition and potentially alters the competition among native species and invasive weeds. This study determines how current and projected N deposition affect the growth, the intraspecific and interspecific competitive ability of native and invasive plants in calcareous soils with low P availability. Methods A controlled greenhouse experiment was conducted using sparingly soluble hydroxyapatite (HAP) to simulate the calcareous soils with low P availability. The growth and competitive intensity between an invasive weed (Solidago canadensis) and a native weed (Pterocypsela laciniata) exposed to two levels of N addition representative of current and future N deposition in China were experimentally determined. Important Findings P acquisition and the growth of both S. canadensis and P. laciniata growing alone significantly increased with increasing N level. However, the effect of N addition was reduced when intraspecific or interspecific competition existed. N addition altered the competitive relationship between S. canadensis and P. laciniata allowing S. canadensis to out-compete P. laciniata due to variation in P acquisition from HAP. Two rock topples with the opposite dip direction, observed in the Ribangliangzi hill and facing the China Provincial Highway S211, are located on the upper stream of the planned dam of Jinchuan Hydropower Station in China. The new site for submerged part of Highway due to reservoir impoundment is designed to be a tunnel crossing the Ribangliangzi hill. However, at this hill, the stratum facing the Dadu River dips southwestward, whereas the stratum facing the Xinzha Gully dips northeastward. Therefore, it's regarded as an important slope structure that may lead to an occurrence of landslide directly threatening the future tunnel excavation stability and slope stability along the highway. This paper reports for the geologic structures of the overturned strata, formative processes and mechanism for toppling on cataclinal slopes. It was concluded that the toppling on cataclinal slopes was caused by a combination of toppling and sliding. Furthermore, to analyse the conditions for toppling on cataclinal slope, the cantilever beam model was established and analyzed the minimum strata dip angle required for toppling more prone to occur on cataclinal slope and the critical length of rock stratum. The results reveal that the toppling will be more prone to occur on cataclinal slope while the strata dip angle is greater than 60°even if under a very small external force or without the assistance of external forces. Background: Schistosomiasis remains an important public health issue in China and worldwide. Oncomelania hupensis is the unique intermediate host of schistosoma japonicum, and its change influences the distribution of S. japonica. The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially changed the ecology and environment in the Dongting Lake region. This study investigated the impact of water level and elevation on the survival and habitat of the snails. Methods: Data were collected for 16 bottomlands around 4 hydrological stations, which included water, density of living snails (form the Anxiang Station for Schistosomiasis Control) and elevation (from Google Earth). Based on the elevation, sixteen bottomlands were divided into 3 groups. ARIMA models were built to predict the density of living snails in different elevation areas. Results: Before closure of TGD, 7 out of 9 years had a water level beyond the warning level at least once at Anxiang hydrological station, compared with only 3 out of 10 years after closure of TGD. There were two severe droughts that happened in 2006 and 2011, with much fewer number of flooding per year compared with other study years. Overall, there was a correlation between water level changing and density of living snails variation in all the elevations areas. The density of living snails in all elevations areas was decreasing after the TGD was built. The relationship between number of flooding per year and the density of living snails was more pronounced in the medium and high elevation areas; the density of living snails kept decreasing from 2003 to 2014. In low elevation area however, the density of living snails decreased after 2003 first and turned to increase after 2011. Our ARIMA prediction models indicated that the snails would not disappear in the Dongting Lake region in the next 7 years. In the low elevation area, the density of living snails would increase slightly, and then stabilize after the year 2017. In the medium elevation region, the change of the density of living snails would be more obvious and would increase till the year 2020. In the high elevation area, the density of living snails would remain stable after the year 2015. Conclusion: The TGD influenced water levels and reduced the risk of flooding and the density of living snails in the study region. Based on our prediction models, the density of living snails in all elevations tends to be stabilized. Control of S. japonica would continue to be an important task in the study area in the coming decade. Based on the study of field background, tectonic evolution and development history of the Yellow River valley, the authors made an in-depth study of the distribution and formation mechanism of the deep concentrated unloading of a typical bank slope developed in broad basin, and found that the concentrated unloading ranges from 2520 to 2650 m at El, the horizontal depth is 40 to 90 m in left bank and 40 to 60 m in right bank. It showed that these deep cracks in concentrated unloading zone generally dip towards the river or to the inner slope with high angle, and the cause of formation due to the category of unloading. The concentrated unloading is the product of the epigenetic deformation along the original tectonic structural planes accompanied by the stress release of slope during the formation process of river bank slope. Since the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir in June 2003, numerous preexisting landslides have been reactivated. This paper seeks to find the factors influencing landslide deformation and the relationship between displacement and fluctuation of the reservoir water level, while the displacement and the intensity of rainfall based on monitoring data; 6 years of monitoring were carried out on the Shiliushubao landslide, a old landslide, consisting of a deep-seated main block and two shallow blocks, with a volume of 1,180 × 10 m and located on the left bank of the Yangtze River, 66 km upstream of the Three Gorges dam. This landslide was reactivated by the impoundment and since then the landslide body has been experiencing persistent deformation with an observed maximum cumulative displacement of 8,598.5 mm up to December 2009. Based on the monitoring data, we analyzed the relationship between the fluctuation of the reservoir water level and displacement, rainfall and displacement, and found that the rainfall is the major factor influencing deformation for two shallow blocks and the displacement has a positive correlation with the variation of rainfall intensity. The fluctuation of the reservoir water level is the primary factor for main block, and the deformation rate has a negative correlation with the variation of reservoir water level, declined with the rise of the water level and increased with the drawdown of the water level. Introduction: More than 80% of schistosomiasis patients in China live in the lake and marshland regions. The purpose of our study is to assess the effect of a comprehensive strategy to control transmission of Schistosoma japonicum in marshland regions. Methodology/Principal Findings: In a cluster randomized controlled trial, we implemented an integrated control strategy in twelve villages from 2009 through 2011 in Gong'an County, Hubei Province. The routine interventions included praziquantel chemotherapy and controlling snails, and were implemented in all villages. New interventions, mainly consisting of building fences to limit the grazing area for bovines, building safe pastures for grazing, improving the residents' health conditions and facilities, were only implemented in six intervention villages. Results showed that the rate of S. japonicum infection in humans, bovines, snails, cow dung and mice in the intervention group decreased from 3.41% in 2008 to 0.81% in 2011, 3.3% to none, 11 of 6,219 to none, 3.9% to none and 31.7% to 1.7%, respectively (P<0.001 for all comparisons). In contrast, there were no statistically significant reductions of S. japonicum infection in humans, bovines and snails from 2008 to 2011 in the control group (P>0.05 for all comparisons). Moreover, a generalized linear model showed that there was a higher infection risk in humans in the control group than in the intervention group (OR = 1.250, P = 0.001) and an overall significant downward trend in infection risk during the study period. Conclusions/Significance: The integrated control strategy, designed to reduce the role of bovines and humans as sources of S. japonicum infection, was highly effective in controlling the transmission of S. japonicum in marshland regions in China. Abstract: Epidemiological evidence has shown two polymorphisms (namely RS#1800468G>A and RS#1800471G>C) of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) gene may be involved in the cancer development. However, their role in the carcinogenic process of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has been less well elaborated. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study including 391 ESCC cases and 508 controls without any evidence of tumors to evaluate the association between these two polymorphisms and ESCC risk and prognosis for Zhuangese population by means of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS)-PCR techniques. We found that individuals with the genotypes with RS#1800471 C allele (namely RS#1800471-GC or -CC) had an increased risk of ESCC than those without above genotypes (namely RS#1800471-GG, adjusted odds ratio 3.26 and 5.65, respectively). Further stratification analysis showed that this polymorphism was correlated with tumor histological grades and TNM (tumor, node, and metastasis) stage, and modified the serum levels of TGF-β1. Additionally, RS#1800471 polymorphism affected ESCC prognosis (hazard ratio, 3.40), especially under high serum levels of TGF-β1 conditions. However, RS#1800468 polymorphism was not significantly related to ESCC risk. These findings indicated that TGF-β1 RS#1800471G>C polymorphism may be a genetic modifier for developing ESCC in Zhuangese population. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is the causative pathogen of infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN), which causes high mortality and great economic losses in salmon and trout aquaculture. IPNVs are divided into seven genotypes, and all IPNV isolates that have been reported in China belong to genogroups I and V. Because of restrictions on imported vaccines, China has no commercial vaccine against IPNV; Therefore, more effective antiviral drugs and vaccines are needed. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat endemic and pandemic diseases and is reported effective against viral infections. We screened a TCM library containing 1483 compounds and found that bufalin exhibited anti-IPNV activity. Bufalin inhibits infections from IPNV genogroups I and V by inhibiting viral internalization and RNA replication rather than viral attachment. In vivo results showed that bufalin significantly inhibited viral loads in IPNV-targeted tissues in rainbow trout. Mechanistic research showed that bufalin's antiviral effects occurred via Na+/K+-ATPase. The Neoproterozoic tectonic setting of the Yangtze Block in present-day southern China and its paleogeographic location in the Rodinia supercontinent remain enigmatic. In this contribution, we report Middle Neoproterozoic diabases and rhyolites in the Kangdian Rift along the western margin of the Yangtze Block. The diabases (ca. 837 Ma) are tholeiitic and exhibit arc-like geochemical affinities (Nb–Ta–Ti depletions and elevated Th/Yb ratios). Isotoptic data (ε Hf (t) = −1.0 to +5.3; δ18O = 5.41‰ to 8.36‰; ε Nd (t) = +1.9 to +2.4) indicate that these diabases were probably derived from partial melting of subduction-modified lithospheric mantle. The rhyolites (ca. 839 and 836 Ma) mark the oldest A-type granitoids in the Kangdian Rift and have relatively small positive zircon ε Hf (t) (+2.6 to +8.1) and negative whole-rock ε Nd (t) (−0.7 and −2.2) values. Their zircon δ 18 O values (4.64‰ to 5.59‰) overlap but are a little lower than those of typical mantle-derived zircons. They were probably generated by partial melting of hydrothermally-altered Mesoproterozoic crust. Integrating previous studies with the data presented in this contribution, we interpret the Kangdian Rift to be formed by slab rollback and backarc extension in an oceanic subduction background. By studying various ancient texts such as herbal classics and medical literature from different eras, it was found that there were discrepancies in the records about Bambusae Concretio Silicea(Tian Zhu Huang). In order to establish an accurate foundation, this research was based on ancient herbal literature and combined with plant morphology and investigative studies to examine its earliest mentions in ancient texts, nomenclature, medicinal properties, indications, and quality assessment standards. In the early records, Bambusae Concretio Silicea was referred to by several different names, such as &quot;Zhu Huang&quot; &quot;Tian Zhu Huang&quot; &quot;Zhu Gao&quot; &quot;Zhu Tang&quot;, and &quot;Zhu Huang&quot;. The earliest known formal usage of the name &quot;Tian Zhu Huang&quot; was found in the book Ri Hua-zi's Materia Medica(Ri Hua Zi Ben Cao). Throughout various ancient texts, the earliest recorded information about Bambusae Concretio Silicea also appeared in Ri Hua-zi's Materia Medica, not in Materia Medica of Sichuan(Shu Ben Cao) or other ancient texts. Ri Hua-zi's Materia Medica provided relevant descriptions of its origin, medicinal properties, and indications, albeit with some errors due to limited knowledge. However, this has been a valuable starting point for future research on Bambusae Concretio Silicea and holds pioneering significance in forming a mature system. As the research delved deeper, the medicinal properties of Bambusae Concretio Silicea have been consistent since Ri Hua-zi's Materia Medica, and the understanding has gradually improved through years of clinical verification. During the investigation process, the authors found limited records on the quality evaluation of Bambusae Concretio Silicea in ancient texts. Although the information is scarce, it serves as a foundational basis for establishing corresponding quality grading standards for Bambusae Concretio Silicea in the future.

In order to explore the characteristics of organic carbon mineralization and the variation law of organic carbon components of an artificial forest in a loess hilly area, an artificial Robinia pseudoacacia forest restored for 13 years and the adjacent slope farmland were selected as the research objects, and indoor culture experiments under three different temperature treatments (15, 25, and 35℃) were carried out. The results indicated that the mineralization rate of soil organic carbon decreased sharply at first and then stabilized. The cumulative release of organic carbon increased rapidly in the initial stage of culture and gradually slowed in the later stage. Soil organic carbon mineralization in sloping farmland was more sensitive to temperature change, and its temperature sensitivity coefficient Q 10 was 1.52, whereas that in R. pseudoacacia forest land was only 1.38. According to the fitting of the single reservoir first-order dynamic equation, the soil mineralization potential C p of R. pseudoacacia forest land and slope farmland was between 2.02-4.32 g·kg -1 and 1.25-3.17 g·kg -1 , respectively, that is, the mineralization potential of the R. pseudoacacia forest was higher. During the cultivation period, the content of various active organic carbon components decreased with time, and that in the R. pseudoacacia forest land was greater than that in the slope land. The cumulative carbon release of soil was significantly positively correlated with the contents of MBC and DOC ( P <0.05), and Q 10 (15-25℃) was negatively correlated with the contents of SOC, EOC, and SWC ( P <0.05). These results could provide some reference for the study of soil carbon sequestration in loess hilly regions under climate change.

To reveal the change in the characteristics of soil microbial C-degrading enzyme activities and the response to the components of C during the restoration process of Robinia pseudoacacia forests in the Loess Plateau, the components of the soil C pool, C-degrading enzyme activities, and microbial metabolic entropy of R. pseudoacacia in different restoration stages were studied, and the response relationship between C-degrading enzymes and soil C components was explored. The results showed that the microbial respiration (MR) first increased and then decreased with the restored years. We found that the microbial metabolic entropy ( q CO 2 ) decreased significantly with the restored years, but the microbial entropy ( q MB) increased. Soil C-degrading enzymes increased significantly in the early-stage restoration of R. pseudoacacia ; however, oxidizing enzymes (PO and PER) and cellobiohydrolase (CBH) decreased in the late stage of restoration. The soil organic C and recalcitrant organic C increased significantly with the restored years; however, there was no significant difference for the labile organic C. Correlation analysis and the partial least squares-path model (PLS-PM) showed that soil C-degrading enzymes and C components were significantly correlated with microbial respiration and entropy ( q CO 2 and q MB), respectively. The hydrolytic enzyme (BG+CBH) was significantly positively correlated with SOC, microbial biomass C, q MB, and recalcitrant and labile organic C. The oxidizing enzyme (PO+PER) was significantly positively correlated with the soil clay and q CO 2 . In addition, the recalcitrant organic C was the key driver of soil microbial metabolism affected by vegetation restoration. Overall, the ecosystem of R. pseudoacacia plantations would gradually stabilize with the increase in restored years and significantly increase the sequestration effect of soil C. These results will be helpful to understand the transformation rule and regulation mechanism of the soil C pool in vulnerable habitats and provide scientific basis for the restoration and management of vegetation in the Loess Plateau.

Background: Enterocytozoon bieneusi, a microsporidian species, is a zoonotic pathogen found in both humans and animals. Here, we determined the prevalence, explored the different genotypes of E. bieneusi in wild rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) (Hainan Island of China), and assessed their zoonotic potential., Methods: We collected 173 fecal specimens from wild rhesus macaques living in Nanwan Monkey Island, Hainan, China. Subsequently, we identified and genotyped E. bieneusi using nested PCR analysis amplification of the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of the rRNA gene. Lastly, a neighbor-joining tree was built based on gene sequences from the ITS region of E. bieneusi., Results: Of the 173 specimens from wild rhesus macaques, 26 (15%) were infected with E. bieneusi. We identified six genotypes of E. bieneusi, of which five were known: PigEBITS7 (n = 20), D (n = 2), Type IV (n = 1), Peru6 (n = 1), Henan-III (n = 1), and a novel genotype: HNM-IX (n = 1). From the phylogenetic analysis, the six genotypes identified here were all clustered into zoonotic group 1., Conclusion: This study is the first report to detect E. bieneusi infection in wild rhesus macaques from Hainan, China. Human-pathogenic genotypes D, Henan-III, Peru6, PigEbITS7, and Type IV in the wild rhesus macaques support these animals infected with E. bieneusi have a public health significance.

Background: Until January 18, 2021, coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has infected more than 93 million individuals and has caused a certain degree of panic. Viral pneumonia caused by common viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, human bocavirus, and parainfluenza viruses have been more common in children. However, the incidence of COVID-19 in children was significantly lower than that in adults. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations, treatment and outcomes of COVID-19 in children compared with those of other sources of viral pneumonia diagnosed during the COVID-19 outbreak., Methods: Children with COVID-19 and viral pneumonia admitted to 20 hospitals were enrolled in this retrospective multi-center cohort study. A total of 64 children with COVID-19 were defined as the COVID-19 cohort, of which 40 children who developed pneumonia were defined as the COVID-19 pneumonia cohort. Another 284 children with pneumonia caused by other viruses were defined as the viral pneumonia cohort. The epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory findings were compared by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Contingency table method. Drug usage, immunotherapy, blood transfusion, and need for oxygen support were collected as the treatment indexes. Mortality, intensive care needs and symptomatic duration were collected as the outcome indicators., Results: Compared with the viral pneumonia cohort, children in the COVID-19 cohort were mostly exposed to family members confirmed to have COVID-19 (53/64 vs. 23/284), were of older median age (6.3 vs. 3.2 years), and had a higher proportion of ground-glass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography (18/40 vs. 0/38, P < 0.001). Children in the COVID-19 pneumonia cohort had a lower proportion of severe cases (1/40 vs. 38/284, P = 0.048), and lower cases with high fever (3/40 vs. 167/284, P < 0.001), requiring intensive care (1/40 vs. 32/284, P < 0.047) and with shorter symptomatic duration (median 5 vs. 8 d, P < 0.001). The proportion of cases with evaluated inflammatory indicators, biochemical indicators related to organ or tissue damage, D-dimer and secondary bacterial infection were lower in the COVID-19 pneumonia cohort than those in the viral pneumonia cohort (P < 0.05). No statistical differences were found in the duration of positive PCR results from pharyngeal swabs in 25 children with COVID-19 who received antiviral drugs (lopinavir-ritonavir, ribavirin, and arbidol) as compared with duration in 39 children without antiviral therapy [median 10 vs. 9 d, P = 0.885]., Conclusion: The symptoms and severity of COVID-19 pneumonia in children were no more severe than those in children with other viral pneumonia. Lopinavir-ritonavir, ribavirin and arbidol do not shorten the duration of positive PCR results from pharyngeal swabs in children with COVID-19. During the COVID-19 outbreak, attention also must be given to children with infection by other pathogens infection.

In order to explore the impacts of nitrogen fertilizer and straw returning methods on N 2 O emissions, a two-factor split-zone design was adopted for experimentation under the winter wheat-summer maize rotation model in the Guanzhong area of Shanxi, China. The main areas of interest were conventional nitrogen (G) and reduced nitrogen (70% G); the sub-areas were straw no return (N), straw return (S), and straw return + biochar (SB); we analyzed their impacts on N 2 O emissions and crop yield, and the relationships with related impact factors. The results showed that the N 2 O emissions peaks appeared in the wheat season and maize season treatments within 5-16 days after fertilization, and also appeared after rainfall. The N 2 O flux was significantly and positively correlated with soil temperature and NH 4 + -N content. Regardless of the wheat season, maize season, or annual total N 2 O emissions, the 70% GSB treatment was the lowest and the GS treatment was the highest. At the same level of nitrogen application, S treatment increased N 2 O emissions, SB treatment could reduce N 2 O emissions, both S and SB treatments could significantly increase crop yields, and SB production increased more; 70%G-level annual N 2 O emissions, when compared with the G level, had been reduced by 40% to 48%, while the yield has not decreased significantly. Through comprehensive consideration, a reduction of nitrogen by 30% was achieved through the combination of straw + biochar on the basis of conventional nitrogen application, while ensuring high crop yields and the best N 2 O emissions reduction.

In this paper, the correlation between the chemical constituents of Chinese herbal medicines Daphnes Cortex and the ecological factors and soil factors was studied, which provided a reference for the selection of suitable areas for artificial cultivation of Daphne giraldii and wild tending. The geographic information system(GIS) was applied to obtain the ecological factor information of 23 collection sites of Daphnes Cortex, and the soil factor information was determined by the standard procedure in the soil test standard manual. Combining the information of 93 chemical constituents of Daphnes Cortex in 23 collection sites the correlation between components and ecological factors and soil factors was analyzed by statistical methods. The correlation analysis showed that the longitude, annual average rainfall, annual sunshine intensity, annual average temperature in the ecological factors, soil type, effective copper and pH value were the dominant factors affecting the chemical composition of Daphnes Cortex.

Background: Nemonoxacin, a novel nonfluorinated quinolone, has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, including activity against antibiotic-resistant strains, and was developed for treating community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This report provides an integrated safety summary of oral nemonoxacin from two phase II and one phase III clinical studies., Methods: Patients with mild CAP were randomized for treatment with nemonoxacin 500 mg (NEMO-500MG), nemonoxacin 750 mg (NEMO-750MG), or levofloxacin 500 mg (LEVO), orally, once daily, for 7-10 days. Hematological, gastrointestinal, and hepatic disorders; electrocardiography abnormalities; and reported quinolone-associated clinical concerns were included in this analysis., Results: A total of 520, 155, and 320 subjects were assigned to receive NEMO-500MG, NEMO-750MG, and LEVO, respectively. The incidence of adverse events (AEs) was the highest (54.8%) in the NEMO-750MG group (NEMO-500MG, 36.9%; NEMO-750MG, 54.8%; LEVO, 39.7%) and that of drug-related AEs was comparable between the three groups (NEMO-500MG, 22.9%; NEMO-750MG, 31.0%; LEVO, 22.5%). The majority (>80%) of the patients showed mild drug-related AEs and the distribution based on severity was similar between the groups. The most commonly reported drug-related AEs included neutropenia (NEMO-500MG, 2.5%; NEMO-750MG, 8.4%; LEVO, 4.4%), nausea (NEMO-500MG, 2.5%; NEMO-750MG, 7.1%; LEVO, 2.5%), leukopenia (NEMO-500MG, 2.3%; NEMO-750MG, 4.5%; LEVO, 3.1%), and increased alanine aminotransferase level (NEMO-500MG, 4.4%; NEMO-750MG, 0%; LEVO, 2.5%)., Conclusion: Nemonoxacin was well tolerated and no clinically significant safety concerns were identified, suggesting that it possesses a desirable safety and tolerability profile similar to that of levofloxacin, and may be a suitable alternative to fluoroquinolones for treating patients with CAP., (Copyright © 2019. In order to further standardize the diagnosis and treatment of schistosomiasis japonica in China, on the basis of evidence-based medicine, the experts on schistosomiasis control from Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces summarized their consensuses on the disease after the discussion on the current situation and progress of clinical diagnosis and treatment of schistosomiasis in China, with the reference to the Diagnostic Criteria for Schistosomiasis (WS261-2006), which aimed to establish the therapeutic standards or guideline of schistosomiasis in China.

Objective: To evaluate the schistosomiasis control effect of the measures of replacing cattle with machine for cultivation and forbidding depasturage of livestock on marshlands in marshland and lake regions., Methods: The retrospective review and field survey were implemented in the Jiangling and Gongan counties of Hubei Province where were implemented with the measure of replacing cattle with machine for cultivation, and Yuanjiang and Huarong counties of Hunan Province where were implemented with the measure of forbidding the depasturage of livestock on marshlands. The schistosome infection status of human, cattle, and Oncomelania hupensis snails, and schistosome-infested field excreta were surveyed from 2007 to 2013. The effects of the interventions were compared before and after their implementations., Results: The 6 villages of Hubei Province were implemented with the measure of replacing cattle with machine for cultivation, and 7 villages of Hunan Province were implemented with the measure of forbidding the depasturage of livestock on marshlands. From 2007 to 2013, the schistosome infection rates of residents declined from 3.95% to 0.70% (χ2 = 128.376, P < 0.05), with the descend range of 82.53%. The descend ranges of the measures of replacing cattle with machine for cultivation and forbidding the depasturage of livestock on marshlands were 83.081% and 81.62% respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two measures (χ2 = 0.132, P > 0.05). The infection rate of cattle decreased from 3.66% in 2007 to 0.65% in 2013, and the descend range was 82.24% (χ2 = 13.692, P < 0.05). The field excreta was surveyed in the snail breeding place in 2013. The investigated area was 157.435 hm2, and 625 samples of field feces of cattle were collected with the density of field excreta of 3.97/hm2, and the positive rate was 1.12% (7/625). The schistosome infection rate of snails and the density of infected snails decreased successively from 2007, and no infected snails were detected from 2011 to 2013., Conclusions: The schistosomiasis endemic situation are decreased significantly after the interventions of replacing cattle with machine for cultivation and forbidding the depasturage of livestock on marshlands. Therefore, schistosomiasis control effect of these measures is notable in the marshland and lake regions.

Dongting Lake area is one of the major marshland schistosomiasis endemic areas in China. In recent years, spatial epidemiology is widely used in the research of schistosomiasis, which is a new opportunity to break through the current wandering situation of schistosomiasis control. In this article, both the generalized and Dongting-Lake-specific epidemic indicators of schistosomiasis are reviewed to provide the basis to construct the schistosomiasis Geographic Information System (GIS) database of Hunan Province.

Objective: To understand the dynamic rules of schistosomiasis endemic situation before and after reaching the criteria of schistosomiasis transmission controlled or transmission interrupted, so as to provide the evidence for improving schistosomiasis control., Methods: Wuling District, Xihu District and Linli County were selected and investigated retrospectively to collect the schistosomiasis epidemiological information 10 years before they reached the criteria of transmission controlled and the subsequent years until 2008. A database of retrospective investigation was established for analyzing the trends and rules of changes of the Oncomelania hupensis snail status and infection status of cattle and human., Results: In Wuling District, the endemic situation was declining, and no schistosome infection persons, animals and snails were found after 1974. There was no rebound until 2008. In Xihu District, the endemic situation reached the criteria of transmission controlled in 1997, and the endemic situation was stable. The human infection rate was positively correlated with the area of infection snails (r = 0.584, P < 0.05). In Linli County, there were no snails, no infected persons and cattle twice, but 2 endemic rebounds, and there were positive correlations between the densities of living snails and the infection rates of human and animal during the endemic rebound period., Conclusion: The snail status is an important indicator of schistosomiasis endemic rebound. Therefore, the snail control is one of the most important schistosomiasis control measures.

Objective: To comprehensively evaluate the effect of the program of treatment and assistance to advanced schistosomiasis patients in Hunan Province from 2004 to 2013., Methods: The fund investment of the program, the profits of hospitals and the improvement of the patients' health were investigated by data collection and questionnaire survey. The evaluation index system of treatment and assistance to advanced schistosomiasis in Hunan Province was constructed by the Delphi method and analytic hierarchy process, and the program was assessed comprehensively., Results: The evaluation index system including 6 primary indices and 33 secondary indices was established. Among all the primary indices, the score of the treatment and assistance (22.25) was the highest, and that of the satisfaction assessment (8.15) was the lowest, and the score of the comprehensive assessment was 87.06. The average cure rate of the patients was 13.08% from 2004 to 2013. More than 60% of the patients' disease condition got better, and nearly 70% of the patients' psychological condition improved, and more than 70% of patients' self-help ability and social contact improved, as well as family happiness increased. In addition, the annual average cost for caretakers decreased by 2000 Yuan, and the profits of all the fixed-point hospitals for treatment and assistance increased., Conclusion: The effectiveness and efficiency of the treatment and assistance to advanced schistosomiasis patients in Hunan Province is obvious, and the government should continuously invest in the program.

Background: Owing to the harmfulness and seriousness of Schistosomiasis japonica in China, the control and prevention of S. japonica transmission are imperative. As the unique intermediate host of this disease, Oncomelania hupensis plays an important role in the transmission. It has been reported that the snail population in Qiangliang Lake district, Dongting Lake Region has been naturally declining and is slowly becoming extinct. Considering the changes of environmental factors that may cause this phenomenon, we try to explore the relationship between circumstance elements and snails, and then search for the possible optimum scopes of environmental factors for snails., Methods: Moisture content of soil, pH, temperature of soil and elevation were collected by corresponding apparatus in the study sites. The LISA statistic and GWR model were used to analyze the association between factors and mean snail density, and the values in high-high clustered areas and low-low clustered areas were extracted to find out the possible optimum ranges of these elements for snails., Results: A total of 8,589 snail specimens were collected from 397 sampling sites in the study field. Besides the mean snail density, three environmental factors including water content, pH and temperature had high spatial autocorrelation. The spatial clustering suggested that the possible optimum scopes of moisture content, pH, temperature of the soil and elevation were 58.70 to 68.93%, 6.80 to 7.80, 22.73 to 24.23°C and 23.50 to 25.97 m, respectively. Moreover, the GWR model showed that the possible optimum ranges of these four factors were 36.58 to 61.08%, 6.541 to 6.89, 24.30 to 25.70°C and 23.50 to 29.44 m, respectively., Conclusion: The results indicated the association between snails and environmental factors was not linear but U-shaped. Considering the results of two analysis methods, the possible optimum scopes of moisture content, pH, temperature of the soil and elevation were 58.70% to 68.93%, 6.6 to 7.0, 22.73°C to 24.23°C, and 23.5 m to 26.0 m, respectively. The findings in this research will help in making an effective strategy to control snails and provide a method to analyze other factors.

Glycosyltransferases and glycoside hydrolases are two diversified groups of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) in existence, they serve to build and break down the glycosidic bonds, respectively, and both categories have formed many sequence-based families. In this study, a novel gene (glyt110) conferring β-galactosidase activity was obtained from a metagenomic library of Turpan Basin soil. Sequence analysis revealed that glyt110 encoded a protein of 369 amino acids that, rather than belonging to a family typically known for β-galactosidase activity, belonged to glycosyltransferase family 4. Because of this unusual sequence information, the novel gene glyt110 was subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3), and the recombinant enzyme (Glyt110) was purified and characterized. Biochemical characterization revealed that the β-galactosidase activity of Glyt110 toward o-nitrophenyl-β-D-galactopyranoside (ONPG) and lactose were identified to be 314±18.3 and 32±2.7 U/mg, correspondingly. In addition, Glyt110 can synthesize galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) using lactose as substrate. A GOS yield of 47.2% (w/w) was achieved from 30% lactose solution at 50 °С, pH 8.0 after 10 h reaction. However, Glyt110 was unable to glycosylate either N-acetylated saccharides or lactose and galactose using UDP-gal as sugar donor, and its glycosyltransferase activity needs further investigation. These results indicated that Glyt110 is an unusual enzyme with β-galactosidase activity but phylogenetically related to glycosyltransferase. Our findings may provide opportunities to improve the insight into the relationship between glycosyltransferases and glycoside hydrolases and the sequence-based classification., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. This study was conducted to investigate the wild and cultivated resource situation of Rheum tanguticum in main production area of China, estimate its reserves, and put forward the feasible approach for the sustainable utilization of R. tanguticum. On the basis of the literature data about R. tanguticum, conbined with interview, investigation and sampling investigation, the total reserve of resources is estimated using the route-quadrat method and the vegetation and soil-type map area method proposed by our research group. The results indicate that there is no obvious change between the present distribution ranges of the wild R. tanguticum and its historical records, but its population density has changed clearly. The reserve of the wild R. tanguticum has seriously declined in lots of place, even faced the exhaustion in some regions. According to the investigation, the resource reserve of the wild R. tanguticum is no more than 5 000 t, and the cultivated is about 1 607 t. The resource reserve of the wild R. tanguticum is nearly depleted, and this suggests that the wild R. tanguticum should be enrolled in the protection plant list, and the cultivated will become the main resource of Rhubarb in the future. So it is extremely neccessary to collect and protect the germplasm resource of R. tanguticum, establish the germplasm nursery and repository, and conduct breeding research on those bases.

Objective: To establish the measures of schistosomiasis field survey and evaluate the efficacy of their application according to the content of indexes of rapid assessment system to high transmission risks in schistosomiasis endemic areas of lake regions., Methods: In 2012, based on the analysis of Oncomelania hupensis snail situation, and schistosomiasis epidemic data of human and cattle from 2008-2010, 60 villages from Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces were selected and investigated, and the content of the investigation included the field feces, snail status, and epidemic situation of human and cattle. The systemic sampling was applied for snail investigation; the feces collected from snail investigation field were examined by the hatching test (3 bottles for 1 sample). A cluster random sampling was carried out with more than 300 people in each village. By using the hatching test (3 bottles for 1 sample) , the human stool examination was carried out for the identification of the infected persons who were positive in the immunity test screening. The hatching test was applied for cattle of all the villages (3 bottles for 1 sample)., Results: A total of 65 field feces spots were surveyed in 60 villages, field feces were found in 78.46% (51/65) of spots, and the positive rate of field feces was 1.07% (9/842). There were 73.33% (44,160)of villages with cattle, and the largest amount cattle with 329 was found in Wufeng Village, Jiangxi Province. The cattle infection rate was 1.5 1% (4,913,242) in 3242 investigated cattle. The highest cattle infection rate was 4% in Tongxin Village, Jiangxi Province. The population of 47 099 was surveyed, the infection rate was 0.77% (364/47 099), and the highest was 4.37% in Xumuchang Village, Hunan Province. The infection rate was 0 in 43.33% (26/60) of villages. No acute schistosomiasis cases were reported in all the villages in 2011 and 2012. Totally, 77 snail spots in 60 villages were investigated, and 51 spots were marshland and 26 spots were ditches. The schistosome-infected snails were detected in 5.88% (3/51 )of the marshland spots and the living snails were found in 80.39%(41/51) of the spots. The highest density of living snails was 3.20/0.1 m2 in Xumuchang Village, Hunan Province. The average density of infected snails was 0.00045/0.1 m2 (4/8942). The infected snail spots were distributed in Liujiadi Village and Liuhe Village of Hubei Province, and Jiangkou Village of Anhui Province. No infected snails were detected in 26 ditches spots. The living snails were detected in 53.85% (14/26) of the ditches spots. The highest average density of living snails was 3.76/0.1 m2 in Huakou Village, Hubei Province., Conclusions: The measures of field survey for rapid assessment system of high transmission risks in schistosomiasis endemic areas of lake regions are established and applied with scientific, impersonal and rapid characteristics.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of comprehensive measures with emphasis on schistosomiasis infectious source control at the embankment level., Methods: The comprehensive measures with emphasis on schistosomiasis infectious source control were carried out, and the data of human and Oncomelania snail infection rates were collected and analyzed statistically at embankment levels., Results: In Anbao Embankment, except the other comprehensive measures were performed, 2606 buffaloes were removed. The infection rates of residents reduced from 8.04% before the intervention to 0.7% after the intervention, and the infection rates of snails reduced from 0.56% to 0.05%. In Anli Embankment, 535 buffaloes were removed. In the third year after the intervention, the infection rates of residents reduced from 5.87% to 1.09%, and the infection rates of snails reduced from 0.17% to 0.07%. In Anzao Embankment, 62 buffaloes were removed. In the second year after the intervention, the infection rates of residents reduced from 2.67% to 0.39%, and the infection rates of snails reduced from 1.12% to 0.00%. In Anchang Embankment, the buffaloes were not removed. The human infection rates reduced from 1.76% before the intervention to 1.23% after the intervention., Conclusion: The comprehensive measures with emphasis on schistosomiasis infectious source control, especially the buffalo's removal, are effective in the control of schistosome infection rates of residents and snails.

Objective: To understand the changes of schistosomiasis endemic situation and water body security in the Changsha City section of the Xiangjiang River., Methods: The prevention and control measures of schistosomiasis, the status of Oncomelania hupensis snails in the marshlands, and the schistosome infection rates of residents on the both sides of the river and boat fishermen were investigated from 2003 to 2012. The schistosome infectivity of the water body was investigate by the method of sentry mice., Results: The snail area decreased from 471 hm(2) in 2003 to 28.81 hm(2) in 2012 with the decline rate of 93.88%. Through the environmental modification, no living snails were found in 9 marshlands among the 11 marshlands, and the density of snails was below 0.006/0.1 m(2) in the other 2 marshlands, but no infected snails were found for 7 years. The original snail habitats of Juzhou scenic area were completely modified and no living snails were found from 2008. In the area, no domestic animals were pastured and the schistosome infectivity of the water body was negative with the sentry mouse method for 10 years. In 2003, the schistosome infection rate was 3.63% in the residents, but no new infections were found in original residents after 2010., Conclusion: The endemic situation of schistosomiasis of the Changsha City section of the Xiangjiang River has reached the standards of schistosomiasis transmission controlled and the water body of Juzhou scenic area is safe.

Objective: To understand the dynamics of schistosomiasis situation so as to provide the evidence for formulating the prevention and control scheme in Erlang Village, Yueyang County, Hunan Province., Methods: The schistosomiasis prevalence and Oncomelania snail status were investigated from 2005 to 2012., Results: The schistosome infection rates of the residents decreased from 2.76% in 2005 to 0.54% in 2012 and the decline rate was 80.43%; the infection rates of the livestock decreased from 8.70% in 2005 to 0 in 2012. No snails were found in the inner embankment over the eight-year period. The density of the infected snails was 0.0005 per 0.1 m(2) in 2005, but no positive snails were found from 2009 to 2012 outside the embankment., Conclusion: The schistosome infections of people and livestock and the status of the intermediate host snails have achieved the criteria of schistosomiasis transmission control.

Objective: To investigate the current distribution of susceptible areas of schistosomiasis outside embankment, so as to provide the evidence for making comprehensive measures in Hunan Province., Methods: The outside embankment areas where Oncomelania snails possibly or historically distributed and people and animals had activities were surveyed. The schistosomiasis information of the susceptible areas was collected, a database was set up, the positions were marked with GPS, an E-map was drawn with Google Earth, and the distribution was analyzed., Result: The number of marshlands with schistosomiasis susceptible areas outside embankment was 787, the length was 1,429.64 km, and the area was 6,2017.17 hm(2). The average density of living snails was 0.37 snails/0.1 m(2), and the average density of infected snails was 0.0019 snails/0.1 m(2). The infected snails were found in 180 marshlands, and the area was 688.07 hm(2). Sixteen rivers had the susceptible areas, and the main vegetation was weeds., Conclusions: The susceptible area of schistosomiasis outside embankment is wide and complex. Therefore, the comprehensive control measures should be strengthened.

Objective: To understand the effect of comprehensive schistosomiasis control measures with focus on buffalo and sheep removal in Anxiang City, Dongting Lake area., Methods: The data of buffalo and sheep removal, routine schistosomiasis control measures such as disease detection and treatment, Oncomelania snail survey and control, as well as health education were collected and analyzed in Anxiang County, Hunan Province from 2004 to 2012., Results: The schistosome infection rates of people, domestic animals and snails decreased from 11.23%, 17.06% and 1.07% in 2004 when the comprehensive measures had not been implemented to 0.58%, 0 and 0 in 2012, respectively. The average density of infected snails decreased from 0.003 4 snails/0.1 m2 to 0., Conclusion: The comprehensive control measures with focus on buffalo and sheep removal are significantly effective, and can control the transmission of schistosomiasis in marshland and lake regions.

Objective: To clarify the role of socio-economy and management in the sustainable schistosomiasis-control in Taoyuan County, an endemic area in hilly region, Hunan Province, China., Methods: From 1996 to 2011, the data of socio-economy, the management of schistosomiasis control organizations, environment, and the changes in schistosomiasis prevalence were collected in Taoyuan County where schistosomiasis transmission had been controlled since 2008. A sampling survey of schistosomiasis prevalence of human and bovine was performed in 2011 to verify the current status of schistosomiasis transmission. All the data were analyzed statistically to evaluate the role of socio-economy and management in the sustainable schistosomiasis control., Results: During the period from 1998 to 2012, the socio-economy including the residents' productive mode and daily life in Taoyuan County improved dramatically, but the recurrence risk of schistosomiasis endemic still existed due to the retuning of out-going workers and the migrating population. Moreover, the introduction of exotic species of plants and animals may increase the risk. The low running cost of schistosomiasis control organization as well as the efficient and adequate resource allocation in the county was in line with the national requirement to strengthen the rural grass-roots public health system., Conclusion: The harmonious development of socio-economy and the scientific and efficient health system in Taoyuan County are the key factors for the sustainable transmission control of schistosomiasis.

Objective: To analyze the main endemic indicators and their changing trend of schistosomiasis since the founding of new China for 60 years in Dongting Lake regions., Methods: A variety of archival data on schistosomiasis epidemiology and control were collected, and several mathematical models were applied to estimate the main endemic indicators of schistosomiasis., Results: Compared to those in 1950s, the infection rates of schistosomiasis among human and cattle in 2010 were declined by 89.3% and 94.7%, respectively; the number of schistosomiasis patients was reduced from 600 thousand to 88 thousand; the number of acute schistosomiasis patients dropped from 2 732 to 18; and that of advanced schistosomiasis patients decreased from 55 thousand to 5 632., Conclusions: The high priority by government authority, suitable control models according to local conditions and huge resources are the cornerstone of success on schistosomiasis control in Dongting Lake regions.

Objective: To investigate the distribution, classification and reformation of all sluices located in the Dongting Lake region, and found out the relationship between irrigation and Oncomelania snail diffusion., Methods: The information of sluices and their reformation were collected from the local Department of Water Resources and the information of snail conditions collected from the Department of Schistosomiasis Control. The latitude and longitude of each sluice were pinpointed and record with GPSmap76. All the data were analyzed statistically., Results: There were a total of 589 sluices in the Dongting Lake region including 190 Kejinluo sluices (snails might enter through the sluice, 69 were reformed) and 49 Jinluo sluices (snails could enter through the sluice, 8 were reformed). The occurrence rate of snails was higher in water sluice than in drain sluice, and there was a significant difference between them (P < 0.05); the occurrence rate of snails in the sluice was higher when there were snails outside the sluice than when there was no snails outside the sluice, and there was a significant difference between them(P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The main source of snails in the sluice is from the outside of the sluice and irrigation is the main way that snails spread into sluice. The sluices should be reformed effectively, and the snails inside and outside sluice should also be destroyed effectively in order to consolidate the effect of snail control inside the embankment.

This paper describes the epidemic status and current endemic features of schistosomiasis in Dongting Lake area and analyzes the achievements and weakness of various control measures. It also summarizes the characteristics of epidemic situation in the Dongting Lake region, which indicates the long-term and the arduous work in the future for the control of schistosomiasis. In strategy, comprehensive measures should be implemented and routine prevention control work should be remained combing with the control of transmission sources.

Objective: To summarize the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection in children with acute respiratory tract infection (ARI) in Guangzhou., Methods: MP was detected using an indirect immunofluorescent method in 2084 children with ARI. The relations between MP infection rate and the gender, age, season, site of infection and wheezing diseases were analyzed., Results: A total of 433 children (20.8%) were positive for MP, including 222 boys (19.8%) and 211 girls (21.9%) without significant difference in the infection rate between the genders (P>0.05). In 0- to 3-year-old group, 106 children were positive for MP (15.0%), while in 3- to 5-year-old group and 5- to 14-year-old group, 163 (25.2%) and 164 (22.5%) were positive, respectively, showing a significant difference in the infection rate between the 3 groups (P<0.05). The MP infection rate was 18.0% in January to March, 25.1% in April to June, 17.7% in July to September, and 20.5% in October to December, showing significant differences between the periods (P<0.05). No significant difference was found in the infection rate between children with acute upper respiratory tract infection (URI) and those with lower respiratory tract infection (LRI) (P>0.05). Among the children with LRI, those having wheezing disease had significantly higher MP positivity rate than those without wheezing., Conclusion: MP is a common causative agent for ARI in children. MP infection is not related to gender and infection site, but to age and season. Children over 3 years old are vulnerable to MP infection. MP infection can be associated with wheezing in LRI.

Inflammation has recently proven to be associated with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and inflammatory genes are good candidates for the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The early phase of atherosclerosis involves the recruitment of inflammatory cells from the circulation and their transendothelial migration. This process is mainly mediated by cellular adhesion molecules. The adhesion molecule P-selectin may play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Polymorphism of P-selectin gene, which may affect the production level of the adhesion molecule, has been associated with a number of atherosclerotic disease. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the relationship of P-selectin gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke in a Chinese population. We analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms of P-selectin gene -2,123 G/C, -1,969 G/A, -1,817 T/C and Thr715Pro in three hundred and five patients with ischemic stroke and 280 age and sex matched controls, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and DNA sequencing method. There were no significant differences in the genotype, allele and haplotype frequencies of P-selectin gene polymorphisms between the group of patients with ischemic stroke and the control group. Furthermore, there was no significant association of genotype, allele and haplotype at any of the polymorphism in relation to any subtype of ischemic stroke. We did not observe an association between P-selectin gene polymorphisms and ischemic stroke or any subtype of ischemic stroke. However, further studies are needed to explore the complex interaction between environmental factors and P-selectin gene polymorphisms in the risk of ischemic stroke, particularly in ethnically different populations.

The cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) may play a role in the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) through the modulation of tumor immune response or enhanced angiogenesis. Polymorphism of IL-8 gene, which may affect the production level of cytokine, has been inversely associated with a number of cancers. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the relationship of IL-8 gene polymorphisms and NPC in a Chinese population. We analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-8 gene -845 T/C, -738 T/A, -353 A/T, -251 A/T and +678 T/C in 280 patients with NPC and 290 age and sex matched controls, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers method (PCR-SSP). There were significant differences in the genotype and allele distribution of -251 A/T polymorphism of the IL-8 gene among cases and controls. The -251 AA and AT genotypes were associated with a significantly increased risk of NPC as compared with the -251 TT genotypes (OR=1.820, 95% CI, 1.120-2.959, P=0.015 and OR=1.590, 95% CI, 1.104-2.290, P=0.013, respectively). Haplotype analysis revealed that the homozygosity of the AAT haplotype (defined by SNPs at positions -353, -251 and +678) of IL-8 gene conveys the highest risk for NPC compared with the homozygosity for the TTC haplotype (OR=1.396; 95% CI, 1.064-1.831; P=0.016). The -251 A/T polymorphism of IL-8 and its haplotype are associated with NPC in a Chinese population. Our data suggests that IL-8 gene may play a role in the development of NPC.

Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is multifactorial, and the genetic background may be a crucial etiologic factor. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a multifunctional cytokine that induces interferon (IFN)-gamma secretion and plays an important role in antitumor immunity. Variations in the DNA sequence in the IL-18 gene promoter may lead to altered IL-18 production and/or activity, and so this can modulate an individual's susceptibility to ESCC. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the relationship of IL-18 gene promoter -137 G/C and -607 C/A polymorphisms and their haplotypes with the risk of ESCC in a Chinese population., Methods: Two hundred and thirty five patients with ESCC and 250 age- and sex-matched controls, using sequence specific primers-polymerase chain reaction (PCR-SSP)., Results: Two polymorphisms, -137 G/C and -607 C/A were in strong linkage disequilibrium (LD). There were significantly differences in the genotype and allele distribution of -137 G/C polymorphism of the IL-18 gene among cases and controls. The -137 GC and CC genotypes were associated with a significantly increased risk of ESCC as compared with the -137 GG genotypes (OR = 1.91, 95% CI, 1.29-2.82, p = 0.001 and OR = 2.95, 95% CI, 1.23-7.04, p = 0.012, respectively). Consistent with the results of the genotyping analyses, the -137 C/ -607 A haplotype was associated with a significantly increased risk of ESCC as compared with the -137G/-607 C haplotype (OR = 1.61; 95% CI, 1.16-2.23; p = 0.004)., Conclusion: This study shows for the first time an association between IL-18 gene promoter -137 G/C polymorphism may contribute represent a genetic risk factor for ESCC in a Chinese population.

Objective: To examine the relationship between intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene polymorphism and ischemic stroke (IS) in Chinese Zhuang populations., Methods: The K469E polymorphism in the exon 6 of ICAM-1 gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and DNA sequencing in 205 patients with IS of Zhuang nationality and in 210 healthy controls, and the serum level of ICAM-1 was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: The IS group showed significantly higher serum levels of ICAM-1 than did the control group (P < 0.01). There was significant difference in frequencies of allele and genotype in K469E polymorphism between IS and control groups, respectively (P < 0.05). The K allele carriers had 1.424 times the risk of suffering from IS as compared with the E allele carriers (OR = 1.424, 95% CI: 1.071 - 1.894); the serum ICAM-1 level of E allele carriers was significantly higher than that of K allele carriers (501.24 +/- 139.56 ng/ml vs 475.17 +/- 118.35 ng/ml, P < 0.01)., Conclusion: There is an association between ICAM-1 gene K469E polymorphism and IS, and E allele may be a genetic risk factor of IS among Guangxi Zhuangs, in which the ICAM-1 E allele carriers may have up-regulated expression of ICAM-1 and hence are at a higher risk of ischemic stroke.
