The rapid development of the Internet, big data, and mobile Internet technology has resulted in the emergence of online collaborative learning as the primary mode of collaborative learning. Although online collaborative learning is flexible and autonomous, the learning performance of learners is not high. One of the main problems that perplexes teachers in online teaching is the high dropout rate but low completion rate. Online education has become increasingly important for improving the quality of students' learning. Teachers' rational use of resources, strategies, and other intervention techniques can significantly enhance the quality of online education. Exploring the effect of teacher-led classroom interventions on college students' metacognition under the collaborative learning mode can further integrate information technology with classrooms and promote the improvement of classroom learning and teaching effectiveness. Two parallel classes, consisting of 80 students each, were selected as research subjects at Harbin University of Science and Technology in Heilongjiang Province, China. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of teacher intervention on college students' metacognition (specifically, metacognitive planning, metacognitive monitoring, metacognitive regulation, and metacognitive evaluation) in an online collaborative learning environment. Results show that there is no significant difference in the online collaborative learning experience between the experimental class and the control class (P = 0.3542 > 0.05). Nonetheless, the experimental and control groups differ in their metacognitive planning (t = 3.943, p = 0.000), metacognitive monitoring (t = 2.464, p = 0.016), metacognitive regulation (t = 2.024, p = 0.046), and metacognitive evaluation (t = 3.675, p = 0.000). These findings indicate that teacher intervention promotes metacognition among college students. The findings have significant reference value for the seamless integration of online teaching resources and teachers' instruction, the customization of students' individualized learning paths, and the enhancement of online collaborative learning performance. CASE STUDIES of adult d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are few, especially studies of DMLs who learn more than one sign language and read logographic and alphabetic scripts. To reduce this paucity, two descriptive case studies are presented. Written questionnaires, face-to-face interviews, and self-appraisals of language-use rubrics were used to explore (a) the language and literacy histories of two adult Asian DMLs who had learned multiple languages: Chinese (spoken/written), English (written), Chinese Sign Language, and American Sign Language; and (b) how each language was used in different cultural communities with diverse conversational partners. Home literacy environment, family support, visual access to languages, peer and sibling support, role models, encouragement, perseverance, and Deaf identity all played vital roles in the participants' academic success. Knowledge of compound word structures in Chinese and English was investigated, comparing 435 Chinese and 258 Americans, including second, fourth, and sixth graders, and college undergraduates. As anticipated, the results revealed that Chinese speakers performed better on a word structure anal-ogy task than their English-speaking counterparts. Also, as anticipated, speakers of both languages performed better on noun + noun and verb + particle compounds, which are more productive in their respective languages than noun + verb and verb + noun compounds, which are less productive. Both Chinese and English speakers performed significantly better on novel compounds than on familiar compounds, most likely because familiar compounds are lexicalized and do not invite decomposition into constituents. This study explored the effects of affective factors and home environments on children's text comprehension from a cultural perspective. About 3,000 British and more than 5,000 Hong Kong fourth grade students participated in the study (data derived from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, 2001). The participating students and their parents were administered a number of questionnaires concerning students' home environments, reading self-concept, and attitude toward reading. Students were also assessed in text comprehension. Methodologically, two factors of home environments (Early Home Literacy Activities and Parents' Attitude toward Reading) and two factors of student characteristics (Student's Reading Self-concept and Student's Attitude toward Reading) were modeled factorially, with reading comprehension as the dependent variable. A final model fits the data well, suggesting that students' home environments within their own culture influenced one's text comprehension. However, this influence was indirect and moderated by the student's reading self-concept and attitude toward reading. Two experiments involving Chinese 2nd graders and 4th graders investigated the use of subcharacter information to learn to pronounce unfamiliar semantic-phonetic compound characters. Experiment 1 confirmed that children can use the information in both tone-different and onset-different characters to learn character pronunciations and showed that phonological awareness generally facilitates learning. Experiment 2 demonstrated that children can utilize the information in bound-phonetic characters as well as, or even better than, the information in independent-phonetic characters, which implies that Chinese children can use an analogy strategy for decoding compound characters.
