Little is known about the importance of drainage/irrigation channels and biogeochemical processes in arsenic distribution of shallow groundwaters from the Hetao basin. This investigation shows that although As concentrations are primarily dependent on reducing conditions, evaporation increases As concentration in the centre of palaeo-lake sedimentation. Near drainage channels, groundwater As concentrations are the lowest in suboxic-weakly reducing conditions. Results demonstrate that both drainage and irrigation channels produce oxygen-rich water that recharges shallow groundwaters and therefore immobilize As. Groundwater As concentration increases with a progressive decrease in redox potential along the flow path in an alluvial fan. A negative correlation between SO4 2− concentrations and δ34S values indicates that bacterial reduction of SO4 2− occurs in reducing aquifers. Due to high concentrations of Fe (>0.5mgL−1), reductive dissolution of Fe oxides is believed to cause As release from aquifer sediments. Understanding the response of vegetation growth to climate change can provide key information for predicting future ecosystem dynamics. Over the past 6 years, the semiarid regions of the Loess Plateau in China have experienced a transition from wet to dry years, but little is known about the response of grass growth to this change. Thus, this study aimed to analyze and evaluate the effect of climate change on grass growth. Using observed climate data and leaf area index (LAI) data obtained with hemispherical photography from 2016 to 2021, we investigated changes in trends of five climatic factors, including precipitation (P), temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS), and solar radiation (Rs), and their impact on the growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Stipa bungeana plantations in the semiarid area of the Loess Plateau. The results showed a tendency to become colder in spring and drier in summer and autumn. In response, LAI tended to decrease in alfalfa and S. bungeana plots with interannual variation rates of 0.21 year−1 and 0.12 year−1, respectively. Additionally, linear regression methods showed that P had the greatest effect on LAI of two grasslands during the growing season (R2 > 0.84, p < 0.01), followed by RH and T (0.30 < R2 < 0.50, p < 0.01), a negative effect of WS (R2 = 0.36, p < 0.01), and no significant effect of Rs on LAI were found. Conversely, the path analysis indicated that Rs and P were the largest decision coefficients affecting the monthly LAI of alfalfa and S. bungeana, respectively, due to the different time‐to‐peak LAI and root growth depth of these two grass species. To feed the growing human population, natural grasslands are being converted to agricultural use at a massive scale. This conversion may have negative consequences for soil biodiversity, but its impact on the community assembly of differentially microbial groups remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the diversity and community compositions of bacteria, archaea, fungi and protists, using a paired sampling of grassland and cropland soils across the agro‐pastoral ecotone of northern China. Land‐use conversion decreased α diversity of bacteria, fungi and protists, and altered the structures of the entire soil microbial community (archaea, bacteria, fungi and protists). The community assembly of archaea and bacteria was dominated by stochastic processes, and that of protists dominated by deterministic processes in both land‐use types. By contrast, the fungal community was governed more strongly by stochastic processes in grassland soil, than by deterministic processes in cropland soil. Our findings support the ʻsize‐plasticityʼ hypothesis that smaller body‐sized microorganisms (archaea and bacteria) are more structured by stochastic processes, and larger one (protist) is more influenced by deterministic processes. The coal‐bearing strata in the southern Junggar Basin in northwestern China have recently attracted the attention of coal geologists. Its abundance of coal resources is of great interest as there is a potential of unlocking details about the palaeoclimatic information. Coal deposits have the capacity to record wildfire events, even those with inefficient combustions. To characterize wildfire events and palaeoclimatic history of the Middle Jurassic Xishanyao Formation (Aalenian and Bajocian ages), 22 coal samples from borehole cores and coal mines in the southern Junggar Basin were collected and their macerals were analyzed. The results indicated that fusinite and semi‐fusinite were the dominant components of inertinite with proportions of 35.27% and 54.67%, respectively. The presence of inertinite is an indicator that wildfires occurred at the time of peat land development, and the widespread occurrence suggests large scale wildfires during the Middle Jurassic. This study proposes a new parameter for the evaluation of wildfire features by combining burning frequency and burning temperature. The comprehensive evaluation index (CEI) was influenced by the lacustrine basin level and ancient plant types from a sequence framework. During the Middle Jurassic, most wildfires were surface fires with low level and ground fire with high level. High oxygen levels were estimated in the lower, middle, and upper members of the Xishanyao Formation with corresponding to 26.78%, 24.55%, and 23.55%, respectively. The high oxygen levels would be the primary cause of repeated wildfires in the Middle Jurassic. These results are helpful for understanding palaeoclimatic changes in the Middle Jurassic. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have promising applications in low-quality farmlands all over the world, but research on their responses to conventional and organic farming systems in low-quality soil is limited. We hypothesized that the colonization activity and community diversity of AM fungi in conventional farming systems may not be lower than in organic farming on low-quality farmlands where beneficial symbiosis is required. We collected soil and maize root samples from medium to low fertility farmlands with conventional or organic farming systems in western Jilin Province, China. The colonization percentage and intensity, taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity, community composition of soil AM fungi, and soil factors were detected and compared between the two farming systems. The colonization intensity and operational taxonomic unit (OTU) taxonomic diversity on conventional farms were higher than on organic farms. Glomus was the most common genus on conventional farms, whereas Paraglomus and Glomus were the most common on organic farms. We also found a simpler AM fungal network structure with lower OTU phylogenetic diversity on conventional farms. Our findings suggested that though the conventional farming system resulted in different compositions and simpler structures of soil AM fungal community, there are potential diverse OTU resources currently present on conventional farms. This work has potential impacts on understanding the influence of different farming systems on soil AM fungi in low-quality farmlands and the development of efficient mycorrhizal inoculant production. Introduction/objectives: Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) has been extensively studied by rheumatologists in Europe and the Americas, but less is known about MSUS use in Asia. Our hypothesis is that MSUS use is less prevalent in China as compared with its Western counterparts. This study reports the most up-to-date recommendations for MSUS use in rheumatology globally and is also the first study to characterize the current practices, training, and perceptions regarding MSUS of rheumatologists in China. Method: A 43-question survey was designed and distributed via mobile application to members of the Chinese Rheumatology Association, primarily to investigate the current prevalence and utilization of MSUS in China. Statistical analyses included the use of chi-square tests and independent-samples t tests, with p values less than 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The results showed low rates of MSUS training (129/528, 24%) and current MSUS use (89/524, 17%) in China. However, there was a high level of interest in learning MSUS, especially among younger respondents. Lack of access to training programs and user variability in skill were seen as significant barriers to the uptake of MSUS. Conclusions: Despite low rates of MSUS training and utilization, the vast majority of respondents believe that MSUS should become a standard clinical tool in rheumatology, and there was great interest in undergoing training. Importantly, lack of access to MSUS training programs and user variability in skill were seen as significant obstacles to the more widespread use of MSUS, which suggests a need for more standardized, high-quality MSUS training in China. The Ordos Basin, a large mainly non‐marine basin, is an important petroliferous basin in northern China. The Triassic Chang 9 shales, including the delta plain shale (DPS), delta front shale (DFS), and deep lake shale (DLS), are proven to be the main source rocks in the lower Yanchang Formation (LYF). This study investigates the source rock potential, palaeoenvironment, and organic matter (OM) source. According to the OM thermal maturity, abundance, and type, the shales have excellent source rock potential. The DLS has the highest quality with average TOC of 7.08%, S1 + S2 of 14.41 mg HC/g rock, and Type II1–II2. According to correlations of Rb/Sr versus Sr/Cu, the shales were mainly deposited in arid conditions. Based on the major element (S), trace elements (V, Ni, Co, Cr, U, and Th), rare earth element (Ce) concentrations, and biomarkers (Pr, Ph, dibenzofuran, fluorene, and dibenzothiophene), redox conditions for the DPS, DFS, and DLS were oxidizing, sub‐oxidizing to sub‐reducing, and reducing, respectively. The palaeosalinity was fresh‐ to brackish‐water, ascertained by the trace elements (Sr and Ba) and biomarkers (gammacerane). The water stratification was controlled by the temperature changes and the palaeosalinity differences, and the maximum water depth was ~100 m during the Chang 9 deposition. Aquatic microorganisms (e.g., algae, bacteria, and phytoplankton) were the main organic matter sources for the shales, mixed together with terrigenous plants in DPS and DFS. The DLS has the most aquatic microorganisms and has the least higher plant fragments, supported by the higher TOC (up to 14%), lowest vitrinite contents (Avg. = 14.1%), and highest liptinite contents (Avg. = 59.5%). Laterally, the DPS, DFS, and DLS were distributed successively from the lake margin to the depocentre. Vertically, the DLS, DFS, and DPS were developed successively from the bottom lake to the upper lake. The DLS was mainly formed in an environment of high‐level sapropelinite and favourable preservation conditions, and the DPS was mainly formed in an environment of high‐level terrigenous inputs and poor preservation conditions, while the DFS was mainly formed in an environment of medium‐level of sapropelinite productivity and terrigenous inputs and fair preservation conditions. The DPS and DFS were formed during both the early stage (shallow lake) and the late stage (deep lake) of the Chang 9 deposition, while the DLS was only developed in the deep lake during the late Chang 9 deposition. The third (Es3) member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation is the main hydrocarbon source rock interval in the Raoyang Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin. The lower Es3 (Es3L) and upper Es3 (Es3U) submembers display clear differences in source rock quality. The formation mechanisms of the source rocks are investigated via geochemical methods using 60 samples from three wells to reconstruct the paleo-environment during deposition. The major element parameters exhibit changes in paleoclimate from humid to arid. Indicators such as Sr/Ba, B/Ga, the gammacerane index and isotopic data suggest fresh–brackish and hydrological open lakes with unstable water column stratification likely occurred during deposition of the Es3L submember and saline and hydrologically closed lakes with stable water column stratification likely during deposition of the Es3U submember. Carbon isotope values of organic matter, trace elements and biomarker parameters suggest that the Es3L submember had moderate productivity, with a significant contribution from terrigenous organic matter whereas the Es3U submember had slightly enhanced productivity, with no or minor contributions from terrigenous organic matter. Furthermore, the pristane/phytane ratio and the enrichment of Mo and U indicate that the euxinic bottom-water conditions (sulfidic) of the lakes during deposition of the Es3U submember were best for preserving organic matter. Comparison of the models of source rock deposition of the Es3L and Es3U submembers indicates that the redox conditions play an important role in the formation of organic-rich source rocks in the Raoyang Sag. During the last decade, several Bohaiornis-like enantiornithine species—and numerous specimens—have been recognized from the celebrated Jehol Biota of northwestern China. In this paper, we describe the anatomy of another “bohaiornithid” species from the 125 million-year-old Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, China. The new taxon differs from previously recognized “bohaiornithids” on a number of characters from the forelimb and shoulder girdle. We also provide a new phylogenetic framework for enantiornithine birds, which questions the monophyly of the previously recognized bohaiornithid clade and highlights ongoing challenges for resolving enantiornithine interrelationships. Additionally, we offer the first assessment of the flight properties of Bohaiornis-like enantiornithines. Our results indicate that while “bohaiornithids” were morphologically suited for flying through continuous flapping, they would have been unable to sustain prolonged flights. Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were measured in 24 h fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples collected from May 2015 to April 2016 at urban and rural sites in Nanchong, a rapidly urbanized but low-level industrialized city in the Sichuan Basin, China. The annual average PM2.5, OC, and EC concentrations at urban sites were 45.6–55.7, 8.5–11.5, and 2.8–3.4 μg m−3, respectively, which were similar to the corresponding values (48.3, 10.6, and 3.3 μg m−3) at the rural site. The PM2.5 concentrations displayed strong monthly variations, with the highest (78.8–105.0 μg m−3) in January or February. Likewise, daily OC and EC concentrations exhibited high values in October (only for OC) and December 2015 to February 2016. Correlation, positive matrix factorization, and concentration weighted trajectory analyses were combined to investigate the sources of carbonaceous aerosol. The results indicated that OC and EC were mainly from biomass burning (60.7% and 45.8%) and coal combustion (30.2% and 25.7%), followed by vehicle emissions and road dust. The enhanced emissions from residential coal and biofuel uses in winter and straw combustion in October contributed to higher concentrations of OC and EC during these months. The contributions of biomass burning to OC and EC were significantly higher at the rural site (69.2% and 51.8%) than urban sites (56.3–58.6% and 37.8–41.5%). Nearly all information available on sexual homicides are limited to studies conducted in the West. Little is known about sexual homicides that occurred in China. The current study is arguably the first to explore the offender, victim, and offense characteristics of Chinese sexual homicides. Over a period of 23 years (1994 to 2016), the data of 59 cases collected from two data sources (i.e., published Chinese case reports and police data) are examined. Findings indicate that heterosexual assaults are far more prevalent in Chinese sexual homicides. Sexual murderers who averagely aged 32.44 years are mostly males (97%), single (67%), secondary school educated (68%), and with no prior overall (80%) and sexual (88%) convictions. The victims are mostly females (83%) with mean age of 35.35 years. The frequently observed offending patterns include strangers as victim choice (63%), con tactics as victim approach method (57%), sexual pleasure as primary motivation (49%), and personal weapons as murder weapon of choice (41%). Vaginal penetration is a commonly observed sexual assault (88%) and victim body mutilation is also not uncommon (47%). Extreme drought, precipitation, and other extreme climatic events often have impacts on vegetation. Based on meteorological data from 52 stations in the Loess Plateau (LP) and a satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from the third-generation Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS3g) dataset, this study investigated the relationship between vegetation change and climatic extremes from 1982 to 2013. Our results showed that the vegetation coverage increased significantly, with a linear rate of 0.025/10a (P < 0.001) from 1982 to 2013. As for the spatial distribution, NDVI revealed an increasing trend from the northwest to the southeast, with about 61.79% of the LP exhibiting a significant increasing trend (P < 0.05). Some temperature extreme indices, including TMAXmean, TMINmean, TN90p, TNx, TX90p, and TXx, increased significantly at rates of 0.77 mm/10a, 0.52 °C/10a, 0.62 °C/10a, 0.80 °C/10a, 5.16 days/10a, and 0.65 °C/10a, respectively. On the other hand, other extreme temperature indices including TX10p and TN10p decreased significantly at rates of -2.77 days/10a and 4.57 days/10a (P < 0.01), respectively. Correlation analysis showed that only TMINmean had a significant relationship with NDVI at the yearly time scale (P < 0.05). At the monthly time scale, vegetation coverage and different vegetation types responded significantly positively to precipitation and temperature extremes (TMAXmean, TMINmean, TNx, TNn, TXn, and TXx) (P < 0.01). All of the precipitation extremes and temperature extremes exhibited significant positive relationships with NDVI during the spring and autumn (P < 0.01). However, the relationship between NDVI and RX1day, TMAXmean, TXn, and TXx was insignificant in summer. Vegetation exhibited a significant negative relationship with precipitation extremes in winter (P < 0.05). In terms of human activity, our results indicate a strong correlation between the cumulative afforestation area and NDVI in Yan'an and Yulin during 1998--2013, r = 0.859 and 0.85, n = 16, P < 0.001. The carbonaceous aerosol concentrations in coarse particle (PM: Dp ≤ 10 μm, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm), fine particle (PM: Dp ≤ 2.5 μm), and ultrafine particle (PM: Dp ≤ 0.133 μm) carbon fractions in a rural area were investigated during haze events in northwestern China. The results indicated that PM contributed a large fraction in PM. OC (organic carbon) accounted for 33, 41, and 62 % of PM, PM, and PM, and those were 2, 2.4, and 0.4 % for EC (elemental carbon) in a rural area, respectively. OC3 was more abundant than other organic carbon fractions in three PMs, and char dominated EC in PM and PM while soot dominated EC in PM. The present study inferred that K, OP, and OC3 are good biomass burning tracers for rural PM and PM, but not for PM during haze pollution. Our results suggest that biomass burning is likely to be an important contributor to rural PMs in northwestern China. Investigation of climatic conditions prior to the Sturtian glaciations is critical to understanding the trigger mechanism for the series of Neoproterozoic global glaciations. In this study, we report high-resolution chemical index of alteration (CIA) records in the sediments of South China prior to the Sturtian glaciation (820∼720 Ma). Our results showed there occurred multiple climate cooling before the Sturtian glaciations in South China: (1) a series of episodic and possibly global climate cooling periods from ca. 750 Ma to 725 Ma, which also caused some diachronous regional glaciations; (2) a permanent climate cooling period between ca. 800 Ma and 770 Ma, probably contemporaneous to the global "Bitter Springs stage"' δ13C negative excursion; (3) a climate cooling period between ca. 815 Ma and 810 Ma. The three stages of climate cooling are also supported by their correspondence to previously reported extremely low δ18O records of igneous/metamorphic minerals from South China. These climate cooling periods also coincide with the magmatism and rifting events in South China. We argue that tectonic movements were the primary control on the climate cooling before the Neoproterozoic global glaciations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Levoglucosan and carbonaceous species in the background aerosol of coastal southeast China were measured at Jianfengling (JFL), a background mountain site in a National Reserve Park on Hainan Island, and at Hok Tsui (HT), a rural site on the southern coast of Hong Kong from April to May of 2004 during an intensive field study. Methods: We integrated the information from field study, satellite and backward trajectory model to examine the long-range transport of biomass burning smoke from the Philippines and assess its impact on background aerosol in coastal southeast China. Results and discussion: The average levoglucosan concentrations were 42 and 30 ng m at JFL and HT, respectively, while the organic and elemental carbon concentrations were 3.1 and 0.4 μg C m respectively at JFL, and 4.1 and 1.3 μg C m respectively at HT. Elevated levoglucosan concentrations of 85-106 ng m (250-340% extra loadings) at JFL and 57 ng m (170% extra loading) at HT were observed during transport events in which air masses originated from the Philippines. Fire hot spot counts and aerosol index derived from satellite data showed that the spread of biomass burning smoke from the Philippines resulted in large-scale dense aerosol clouds in the adjacent South China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean. The observed high ratio of two biomass-burning tracers (levoglucosan to mannosan) at JFL (7-36) and HT (27) indicated that the biomass smoke originating from the Philippines had significant contributions from open-field burning of agricultural residues, such as rice straw. The pollution plumes were transported to southeast China resulting in elevated concentrations of carbonaceous aerosol and levoglucosan in particular. Using a simplified receptor-based approach, biomass smoke aerosol was estimated to account for 16-28% of OC in the background atmosphere of Hainan and 4.9% of OC at the rural site of Hong Kong during these episode cases, indicating that biomass burning smoke generated in the Philippines could have a significant contribution to background ambient aerosol of southeast coastal China. Carbonaceous matter is a major constituent in urban aerosols, especially in those collected in China. The size distributions of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in the range of 0.01-18 µm were measured in an urban location in Guangzhou, China in July 2006. The EC size distribution in the accumulation-mode size was characterized by three significant modes with mass median aerodynamic diameters (MMAD) of ~0.15 µm, ~0.40 µm, and ~0.90 µm, with the second one being the most prominent and accounting for approximately half of the total EC mass. The coexistence of the first two accumulation modes in Guangzhou's urban atmosphere could be explained to be a result of emissions from vehicles operating at different loadings. The dominance of the EC accumulation mode at ~0.40 µm has not often been reported in studies conducted in developed countries, but this observation is consistent with EC size distributions measured in a roadway tunnel in this region. This information is important when modeling the role of EC in modulating the radiative balance and investigating the health effects of EC. The third accumulation mode was postulated to be a result of in-cloud processing after emission. OC had the same size modes as EC but different mass distributions among the modes. The carbonaceous materials in the nucleation mode were dominated by OC. Among particles in the accumulation size range, the OC/EC ratio was higher in the third accumulation mode (MMAD: 0.90 µm) than in the first two accumulation modes, suggesting that in-cloud processing was an important pathway for accumulating OC mass during atmospheric processing of EC particles. This study established the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Suicide Intent Scale (SIS) in a clinic- and community-based sample of 36 patients and 592 respondents, respectively. Results showed that the Chinese SIS demonstrated good inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Factor analysis generated three factors (Precautions, Planning, and Seriousness) explaining 92.9% of the total variance with high internal consistency It was moderately correlated with depressive symptoms. Results suggest that the Chinese SIS is a reliable and valid instrument for use in assessing the extent of suicidal intention among subjects with deliberate self-harm in ethnic Chinese populations. The characteristics of biogenic aerosols in an urban area were explored by determining the composition and temporal distribution of saccharides in PM2.5 in Shanghai. The total saccharides showed a wide range of 9.4 ng/m3 to 1652.9 ng/m3, with the averaged concentrations of 133.1 ng/m3, 267.5 ng/m3, 265.1 ng/m3, and 674.4 ng/m3 in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The saccharides include anhydrosaccharides (levoglucosan and mannosan), which were higher in cold seasons due to the increased biomass burning; saccharide alcohols (mannitol, arabitol, sorbitol); and monosaccharides (fructose, glucose), which were more abundant in warm seasons and attributed to the biological emissions. Through positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis, four emission sources of saccharides were resolved, including biomass burning, fungal spores, plant decomposition, and pollen. Moreover, the process analysis of high concentrations of leveglucosan was conducted by backward trajectory and fire points. We found that concentrations of anhydrosaccharides were relatively stable under different pollution levels, while saccharide alcohols exhibited an obvious decrease with the concentration of PM2.5, indicating that biomass burning was not the core reason for heavy haze pollution.
