Background: There is increasing evidence that exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents is associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but studies on the relationship between exposure to PM 2.5 constituents and the risk of GDM are still limited., Methods: A total of 17,855 pregnant women in Guangzhou were recruited for this retrospective cohort study, and the time-varying average concentration method was used to estimate individual exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents during pregnancy. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents and the risk of GDM, and the expected inflection point between exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents and the risk of GDM was estimated using logistic regression combined with restricted cubic spline curves. Stratified analyses and interaction tests were performed., Results: After adjustment for confounders, exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents (NO 3 - , NH 4 + , and OM) was positively associated with the risk of GDM during pregnancy, especially when exposure to NO 3 - and NH 4 + occurred in the first to second trimester, with each interquartile range increase the risk of GDM by 20.2% (95% CI: 1.118-1.293) and 18.2% (95% CI. 1.107-1.263), respectively. The lowest inflection points between PM 2.5 , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , NH 4 + , OM, and BC concentrations and GDM risk throughout the gestation period were 18.96, 5.80, 3.22, 2.67, 4.77 and 0.97 µg/m 3 , respectively. In the first trimester, an age interaction effect between exposure to SO 4 2- , OM, and BC and the risk of GDM was observed., Conclusions: This study demonstrates a positive association between exposure to PM 2.5 and its constituents and the risk of GDM. Specifically, exposure to NO 3 - , NH 4 + , and OM was particularly associated with an increased risk of GDM. Objectives: To investigate the relative risk factor of food items for colorectal cancer in four time periods through a case-control study in a Chinese rural area.Methods: Colorectal cancer patients diagnosed at a county cancer center, Hebei Province, China, and non-cancer outpatients with similar age, sex, and place of residence were selected for cases and controls, respectively. There were 102 (93.6%) colorectal cancer patients and 99 (90.8%) outpatients being the cases and controls, respectively in the present investigation, who agreed to be interviewed about their food intake, during a 20-year period, through a food frequency questionnaire. The risks of intake of different food items and lifestyle for colorectal cancer were compared between cases and controls.Results: During the 20-year period, diets of both cases and controls changed with increase in intake of animal foods and fruits, and alcohol consumption tended to increase. In the food items, milk intake showed a protective effect in both males and females, and the odds ratios were 0.38 (95% CI 0.16-0.90) and 0.28 (95% CI 0.10-0.81) for males and females, respectively. A reduced risk of fruit intake could be seen in males, while a reduced risk of vegetables could be observed in females. Meat intake and saturated fats were the prominent risk factors for colorectal cancer in males and females, respectively. A comparison of life habits, showed that tea drinking had a consistent protective effect in females, and the odds ratios were 0.21 (0.08-0.58), 0.23 (0.08-0.67), 0.25 (0.10-0.64), and 0.11 (0.04-0.30) for periods of 20-, 10-, 5-years ago, and current time, respectively.Conclusions: These findings indicate that change in food consumption is strongly associated with a change in risk of colorectal cancer, and dietary meat has increased the risk of colorectal cancer. Increase in the consumption of milk and fruits may be a significant measure for colorectal cancer prevention in low-incidence areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in tumorigenesis has been well established. Genetic variants in the miRNA biogenesis pathway genes may modify cancer development and survival by affecting the miRNA biogenesis. Our aim is to investigate the association of polymorphisms in the miRNA biogenesis pathway genes and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) risk among neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients., Methods: A case-control study was performed to analyze 53 SNPs in 11 miRNA biogenesis pathway genes in 356 patients (200 patients with NF1 and 156 patients with both NF1 and MPNST) in China. Association analysis was performed in an additive genetic model by logistics regression., Results: Four SNPs (DDX5 rs1991401, OR=1.79, 95% CI, 1.34-2.38, P=7.90 × 10(-5); DROSHA rs10719, OR=1.64, 95% CI, 1.23-2.20, P=8.76 × 10(-4); AGO2 rs7005286, OR=0.48, 95% CI, 0.32-0.72, P=3.46 × 10(-4); GEMIN4 rs7813, OR=0.50, 95% CI, 0.34-0.72, P=2.65 × 10(-4)) were significantly associated with MPNST risk. A strong gene-dose effect with increased MPNST risk (P for trend<0.001) was observed., Conclusions: Genetic variants in the miRNA biogenesis pathway genes may modify MPNST risk both individually and jointly., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Background/aims: The incidence of urolithiasis has considerably increased throughout the world in the last two decades. Clinical researches have showed an association between oxidative stress and stone formation. Emerging evidence indicated a novel function for klotho protein in anti-oxidative stress. In this study, we aimed at investigating a possible relationship between klotho gene polymorphisms and the risk of calcium oxalate urolithiasis in the population of Han nationality in Eastern China., Methods: Klotho gene polymorphisms rs3752472 in exon3, rs650439 in intron 4 and rs577912 in intron 1 were investigated in 426 patients with calcium oxalate stones compared with 282 age-matched healthy volunteers with no history of stone formation, using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays., Results: Significant differences were found between rs3752472 and the risk of nephrolithiasis as CC genotype of rs3752472 klotho polymorphism had almost 2-fold increased stone risk compared with the heterozygote genotype CT and homozygous genotype TT(95% CI=1.013-2.255, OR=1.512,p=0.043)., Conclusion: Our results showed that the rs3752472 polymorphism of klotho gene is associated with the risk of calcium oxalate urolithiasis and may act as a risk factor during stone formation in our study population., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Widespread use of phenols has led to ubiquitous exposure to phenols. In experimental animals, phenols increased resorptions, reduced live litter size and fetal body weights. However, there are limited epidemiological evidences of the relationships between exposure to phenols and pregnancy outcomes. We evaluated the associations between parental urinary levels of various phenols and spontaneous abortion in a Chinese population residing in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. A case-control study was conducted that included 70 case couples with medically unexplained spontaneous abortion and 180 control couples who did not have a history of spontaneous abortion and had at least one living child. Both parental urinary phenols were measured by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry including bisphenol A (BPA), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 2,3,4-trichlorophenol (2,3,4-TCP), pentachlorophenol (PCP), 4-n-octylphenol (4-n-OP) and 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP). Compared with the low exposure group, there was an increased risk of spontaneous abortion with high paternal urinary PCP concentration [odds ratio (OR)=2.09, 95% Confidence Interval (CI), 1.05-4.14], and maternal exposure to 4-n-OP and alkylphenol(s) also significantly increased the risk of spontaneous abortion (OR=2.21, 95% CI, 1.02-4.80; OR=2.81, 95% CI, 1.39-5.65, respectively). Our study firstly provides the evidence that paternal PCP exposure, maternal 4-n-OP and alkylphenol(s) exposure are associated with spontaneous abortion in humans., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Interleukin 18 (IL-18) gene polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with the outcomes of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Americans, Indians and Europeans. We aimed to investigate whether the association can be replicated in Chinese Han population. Three IL-18 variants, -656G>T, -137G>C and +105A>C, were genotyped in three independent Han cohorts consisting of 552 cases and 784 controls. By using logistic regression analysis and multiple testing, haplotype GCC were associated with a protection from susceptibility to HCV. After stratified analysis, both the carriage of -137C allele in the older or hemodialysis subgroup and the carriage of +105C allele in the younger subgroup were found to be significantly associated with a decreased risk of HCV susceptibility. By using logistic regression analysis and multiple testing for the resolution of HCV infection, our study showed that +105C allele and haplotype GGC displayed a negative effect on HCV persistence. After stratified analysis, a significantly decreased risk for HCV persistence was found in +105C allele in the subgroups of young, male or female, drug user or hemodialysis and HCV-1 or HCV mixed genotype. No significant association was observed between -656G>T and the outcomes of HCV infection. Our results demonstrated that the carriage of -137C allele, +105C allele, haplotype -656G/-137C/+105C and haplotype -656G/-137G/+105C of IL-18 gene may contribute to better outcomes of HCV infection in high-risk Chinese Han population., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
