Background/Aims: Low educational attainment is a well-established risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in developed areas. However, the association between educational attainment and the risk of NAFLD is less clear in China. Methods: A cross-sectional study including over 200,000 Chinese adults across mainland China was conducted. Information on education level and lifestyle factors were obtained through standard questionnaires, while NAFLD and advanced fibrosis were diagnosed using validated formulas. Outcomes included the risk of NAFLD in the general population and high probability of fibrosis among patients with NAFLD. Logistic regression analysis was employed to estimate the risk of NAFLD and fibrosis across education levels. A causal mediation model was used to explore the potential mediators. Results: Comparing with those receiving primary school education, the multi-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for NAFLD were 1.28 (1.16 to 1.41) for men and 0.94 (0.89 to 0.99) for women with college education after accounting for body mass index. When considering waist circumference, the odds ratios (95% CIs) were 0.94 (0.86 to 1.04) for men and 0.88 (0.80 to 0.97) for women, respectively. The proportions mediated by general and central obesity were 51.00% and 68.04% for men, while for women the proportions were 48.58% and 32.58%, respectively. Furthermore, NAFLD patients with lower educational attainment showed an incremental increased risk of advanced fibrosis in both genders. Background: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index has been associated with an increased risk in breast cancer. However, this association remains unclear among the Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate whether the TyG index is associated with the risk of prevalent breast cancer in Chinese women. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 142,184 women from the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of Cancers in Chinese Diabetic Individuals: A Longitudinal) Study, which recruited adults aged 40 years or older from 25 centers across mainland China between 2011 and 2012. The TyG index was calculated according to the formula: Ln (fasting triglycerides [mg/dL] x fasting glucose [mg/dL]/2). Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to evaluate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) regarding the associations between the TyG index and breast cancer. Results: Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that compared with the lowest quartile of the TyG index, the highest quartile of the TyG index was significantly associated with an increased risk of prevalent breast cancer, with an OR (95% CI) of 1.61 (1.19-2.17). In the stratified analysis, the association of each 1 SD increase in the TyG index with risk of prevalent breast cancer was more dominant in individuals with menarche at age 13-17, those who were postmenopausal, those with a history of breastfeeding, and those who had two to four children, with the ORs (95% CIs) of 1.35 (1.09-1.68), 1.27 (1.05-1.54), 1.26 (1.05-1.52), and 1.32 (1.08-1.62), respectively. Moreover, among those without discernible insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance [HOMA-IR] ≥2.5), hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia, each 1 SD increase in the TyG index was associated with a 1.36-fold increase in breast cancer risk, with an OR (95% CI) of 2.36 (1.44-3.87). Bupleurum jeholense Nakai (Apioideae, Apiaceae), originally found in the Wuling Mountain of China, was initially described as a species but later treated as a variety of B. sibiricum Vest ex Spreng. However, researchers have recently found that it is more closely related to B. chinense DC. In this study, we conducted morphological and phylogenetic analyses as well as chromosome counting to determine the taxonomic status of B. sibiricum var. jeholense (Nakai) Chu. Our results showed that B. sibiricum var. jeholense and B. chinense share common features (i.e., bracteoles 5 and stem solid) that distinguish both from B. sibiricum var. sibiricum. The chromosome number of B. sibiricum var. jeholense was found to be the same as in B. chinense (i.e., 2n = 12), whereas the chromosome number of B. sibiricum var. sibiricum was 64. A phylogenetic tree based on complete chloroplast genome data revealed a close relationship between B. sibiricum var. jeholense and B. chinense. Finally, B. sibiricum var. jeholense and B. chinense were mainly found to differ in plant height, number of stems, and middle stem leaves. The infrageneric taxonomy system, species delimitation, and interspecies systematic relationships of Leontopodium remain controversial and complex. However, only a few studies have focused on the molecular phylogeny of this genus. In this study, the characteristics of 43 chloroplast genomes of Leontopodium and its closely related genera were analyzed. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred based on chloroplast genomes and nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). Finally, together with the morphological characteristics, the relationships within Leontopodium were identified and discussed. The results showed that the chloroplast genomes of Filago, Gamochaeta, and Leontopodium were well-conserved in terms of gene number, gene order, and GC content. The most remarkable differences among the three genera were the length of the complete chloroplast genome, large single-copy region, small single-copy region, and inverted repeat region. In addition, the chloroplast genome structure of Leontopodium exhibited high consistency and was obviously different from that of Filago and Gamochaeta in some regions, such as matk, trnK (UUU)-rps16, petNpsbM, and trnE (UUC)-rpoB. All the phylogenetic trees indicated that Leontopodium was monophyletic. Except for the subgeneric level, our molecular phylogenetic results were inconsistent with the previous taxonomic system, which was based on morphological characteristics. Nevertheless, we found that the characteristics of the leaf base, stem types, and carpopodium base were phylogenetically correlated and may have potential value in the taxonomic study of Leontopodium. Leontopodium was divided into two clades (Clades 1 and 2), with most species in Clade 1 having herbaceous stems, amplexicaul, or sheathed leaves, and constricted carpopodium; most species in Clade 2 had woody stems, not amplexicaul and sheathed leaves, and not constricted carpopodium. Introduction: Zhixue Zhentong capsules (ZXZTCs) are a Tibetan medicine preparation solely composed of Lamiophlomis rotata (Benth.) Kudo. L. rotata is the only species of the genus Laniophlomis (family Lamiaceae) that has medicinal constituents derived from the grass or root and rhizome. L. rotata is one of the most extensively used folk medicines by Tibetan, Mongolian, Naxi, and other ethnic groups in China and has been listed as a first-class endangered Tibetan medicine. The biological effects of the plant include hemostasis, analgesia, and the removal of blood stasis and swelling. Purpose: This study aimed to profile the overall metabolites of ZXZTCs and those entering the blood. Moreover, the contents of six metabolites were measured and the hemostatic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects of ZXZTCs were explored. Methods: Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole timeof-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) was employed for qualitative analysis of the metabolites of ZXZTCs and those entering the blood. Six metabolites of ZXZTCs were quantitatively determined via high-performance liquid chromatography The hemostatic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects of ZXZTCs were evaluated in various animal models. Results: A total of 36 metabolites of ZXZTCs were identified, including 13 iridoid glycosides, 9 flavonoids, 9 phenylethanol glycosides, 4 phenylpropanoids, and 1 other metabolite. Overall, 11 metabolites of ZXZTCs entered the blood of normal rats. Quantitative analysis of the six main metabolites, shanzhiside methyl ester, chlorogenic acid, 8-O-acetyl shanzhiside methyl ester, forsythin B, luteoloside, and verbascoside, was extensively performed. ZXZTCs exerted hemostatic effects by reducing platelet aggregation and thrombosis and shortening bleeding time. Additionally, ZXZTCs clearly had an analgesic effect, as observed through the prolongation of the latency of writhing, reduction in writhing, and increase in the pain threshold of experimental rats. Furthermore, significant anti-inflammatory effects of ZXZTCs were observed, including a reduction in capillary permeability, the inhibition of foot swelling, and a reduction in the proliferation of granulation tissue. Conclusion: Speculative identification of the overall metabolites of ZXZTCs and those entering the blood can provide a foundation for determining its biologically active constituents. The established method is simple and reproducible and can help improve the quality control level of ZXZTCs as a medicinal product. Wood-inhabiting fungi are abundant in China, but their distribution is uneven, with more fungi in southwest China and fewer fungi in northwest China. During the investigation of wood-inhabiting fungi in Xinjiang, we collected a large number of specimens. Eight specimens growing on Picea schrenkiana were collected from Tianshan Mountains, and they were described as two new species in Ceriporiopsis and Sidera based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. Ceriporiopsis tianshanensis is characterized by a cream to salmon-buff pore surface, larger pores measuring 1-3 per mm, and broadly ellipsoid basidiospores 5-6.5 × 3-4 µm. Sidera tianshanensis is characterized by annual to perennial basidiocarps, measuring 15 mm thick, pores 5-7 per mm, cream to rosy buff pore surface, and allantoid basidiospores 3-3.5 × 1-1.4 µm. Background. Physical function is a strong indicator of biological age and quality of life among older adults. However, the results from studies exploring the structural dimensions of physical function are inconsistent, and the measures assessed vary greatly, leading to a lack of comparability among them. This study aimed to construct a model to identify structural dimensions that are suitable and best assess physical function among community-dwelling adults 60-74 years of age in China. Method. This study was conducted in 11 communities in Shanghai, China, from May to July 2021. A total of 381 adults 60-74 years of age were included in the study. Measured physical function data were used in factor analyses. Data collected from individuals were randomly assigned to either exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n=190) or confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n=191). The statistical software used in the study was SPSS for EFA and AMOS for CFA. To test the properties of the structural dimension model of physical function, various fit indices, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were calculated. Results. The EFA results derived seven indicators in three factors, with 58.548% of the total variance explained. The three factors were mobility function (three indicators), which explained 26.380% of the variance, handgrip strength and pulmonary function (two indicators), which explained 19.117% of the variance, and muscle strength (two indicators) which explained 13.050% of the variance. The CFA indicated that this model had an acceptable fit (χ²/df ratio, 2.102; GFI, 0.967; IFI, 0.960; CFI, 0.959; and RMSEA, 0.076), and the criteria for convergent validity and discriminability were also met by the model. Conclusion. The constructed structural dimension model of physical function appeared to be a suitable and reliable tool to measure physical function in communitydwelling adults aged 60-74 years in China. The structural dimension indicators identified by this model may help sports medicine experts and healthcare providers offer more targeted interventions for older adults to reverse or slow the decline of physical function and to offer actionable targets for healthy aging in this population. The effect of structure of gut microbes on the health of host has attracted increasing attention. Sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus is an important farmed fish in China. The relationship of the dynamic changes of intestinal bacterial communities in L. japonicus and the cultural water environment is very important for healthy culture. Here, the diversity and abundance of the gut microbial communities of L. japonicus were evaluated during the culture using 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. Both the opportunistic pathogens Aeromonas (1.68%), Vibrio (1.59%), and Acinetobacter (1.22%); and the potential probiotics Lactobacillus (2.27%), Bacillus (1.16%), and Lactococcus (0.37%) were distributed in the gut of L. japonicus. The increasing concentration of nitrogen of water environments with the increase of culture time significantly correlated with shifts in the microbial community structure: 40.04% of gut microbial changes due to nitrogen concentration. Higher concentrations of nitrogen showed a significantly negative correlation with intestinal probiotics in L. japonicus. The results indicate that the abundance of intestinal bacteria of L. japonicus is mainly driven by the changes of environmental factors (e.g., nitrogen), and it's very important that the linking environmental parameters with bacterial data of guts could be used as an early warning indicator in L. japonicus heath culture. Background: Exposure to light at night (LAN) is a potent disruptor of the circadian system. Whether LAN exposure exerts a sex- or age-specific influence on obesity needs investigation. Objectives: To estimate the sex- and age-specific associations of exposure to outdoor LAN and obesity based on a national and cross-sectional survey. Methods: The study included a nationally representative sample of 98,658 adults aged ≥ 18 years who had lived in their current residence for ≥ 6 months from 162 study sites across mainland China in 2010. Outdoor LAN exposure was estimated from satellite imaging data. General obesity was defined as body-mass index (BMI) ≥ 28 kg/m² and central obesity was defined as waist circumference ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 85 cm in women. Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between LAN exposure and prevalent obesity in sex and age categories. Results: A monotonically increasing association of outdoor LAN with BMI, waist circumference was observed in all sex and age categories, except for adults aged 18-39 years. Significant associations of LAN exposure with prevalent obesity were observed in each sex and age category, especially in men and older people. Per 1-quintile increase in LAN was associated with 14% increased odds of general obesity in men (odds ratio, OR=1.14, 95% confidence interval, CI=1.07-1.23) and 24% in adults aged ≥ 60 years (OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.14-1.35). Per 1-quintile increase in LAN was associated with 19% increased odds of central obesity in men (OR=1.19, 95% CI=1.11-1.26) and 26% in adults aged ≥ 60 years (OR=1.26, 95% CI=1.17-1.35).Conclusions: Increased chronic outdoor LAN exposure was associated with increased prevalence of obesity in sex- and age- specific Chinese populations. Jiangsu Province of China has a large area of coastal silt soil (CSS) with poor permeability, high salinity, and poor nutrients, which brings great difficulties to the development and utilization of coastal zones, so that needs to be improved as a matter of urgency. In this study, river-sand, serpentine, and organic fertilizer were used as additives in CSS, and Sesbania cannabina, a salttolerant cash crop, was planted in these differently treated soils. Through high-throughput sequencing, analysis of soil physico-chemical properties, and detection of plant growth status, the rhizosphere bacterial diversity of S. cannabina growing in CSS under different treatments and their environmental impact factors were studied, while exploring the effect and mechanism of organic fertilizer combined with gravel as a CSS modifier. The results implied that single application of organic fertilizer could significantly increase the fertility levels of total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC) and Avail. P in CSS; then, the application of organic fertilizer with river-sand significantly reduced salt content and alkalinity of soil; meanwhile, in the treatment of single application of organic fertilizer and application of organic fertilizer combined with river-sand, the rhizosphere of S. cannabina enriched the bacterial communities of organic matter degradation and utilization to varying degrees. The soil moisture content and indicators related to salinealkali soil (including total salt, electrical conductivity (EC), exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), Avail. Na and Avail. K, etc.) were further reduced significantly by the application of organic fertilizer combined with river-sand and serpentine. The method has greatly improved the growth conditions of S. cannabina and promoted the positive development of its rhizosphere bacterial community. Among them, in the treatment of organic fertilizer combined with river-sand and serpentine, a variety of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR, such as Sphingomonas, Ensifer, and Rhodobacter) and nitrogen-cyclerelated bacteria (such as nitrate-reduction-related bacteria, nitrogen-fixing bacteria like Ensifer, and purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacteria like Rhodobacter) were enriched in the rhizosphere of S. cannabina; moreover, the mutual association and robustness of bacterial co-occurrence networks have been significantly enhanced. The genus Hydnellum is a kind of ectomycorrhizal fungi that can play a role in the material cycle by connecting the plant roots to the soil, and some species of Hydnellum are medicinal fungi with vital research value. The species diversity of Hydnellum is unclear in China. In this study, five new species of Hydnellum are described from China based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses inferred from two datasets of ITS + LSU and ITS + LSU + SSU + RPB2 sequences. H. chocolatum is characterized by its chocolate basidiomata with the fibrillose, spongy to tomentose pileal surface, and subglobose to globose basidiospores measuring (4.5-)5-6 x 4-5(-5.8) |xm. H. concentricum is characterized by its zonate pileal surface, thin context, short stipe, presence of both simple septa and clamp connections in generative hyphae of spines, and subglobose to ellipsoidal basidiospores measuring (3.5-)4-5(-5.2) x (3.2-)3.5-5 |im. Objective: To present the global research features and hotspots, and forecast the emerging trends by conducting a bibliometric analysis based on literature related to autophagy of pancreatic cancer from 2011 to 2022. Methods: The literature data regarding autophagy of pancreatic cancer were retrieved and downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) from Clarivate Analytics on June 10th, 2022. VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) was used to perform the bibliometric analysis. Results: A total of 616 studies written by 3993 authors, covered 45 countries and 871 organizations, published in 263 journals and co-cited 28152 references from 2719 journals. China (n=260, 42.2%) and the United States (n=211, 34.3%) were the most frequent publishers and collaborated closely. However, publications from China had a low average number of citations (25.35 times per paper). The output of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center ranked the first with 26 papers (accounting for 4.2% of the total publications). Cancers (n=23, 3.7%; Impact Factor = 6.639) published most papers in this field and was very pleasure to accept related researches. Daolin Tang and Rui Kang published the most papers (n=18, respectively). The research hotspots mainly focused on the mechanisms of autophagy in tumor onset and progression, the role of autophagy in tumor apoptosis, and autophagy-related drugs in treating pancreatic cancer (especially combined therapy). The emerging topics were chemotherapy resistance mediated by autophagy, tumor microenvironment related to autophagy, autophagy-depended epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), mitophagy, and the role of autophagy in tumor invasion. Conclusion: Attention has been increasing in autophagy of pancreatic cancer over the past 12 years. Our results undoubtedly provide scholars with new clues and ideas in this field. Background: Primary care represents an ideal setting for screening for and managing suicidal older adults but the clinical epidemiology of suicidal ideation in Chinese older primary care patients remains unclear. This study investigated the prevalence and correlates of suicidal ideation in older Chinese adults receiving primary care. Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional survey included a total of 769 older adults (≥65 years) from seven urban and six rural primary care clinics in Wuhan, China. The presence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation was assessed with the Geriatric Depression Scale and a single-item question "In the past 12 months, did you think about ending your life?," respectively. Results: The 12-month prevalence of suicidal ideation in older primary care patients was 16.6%. Significant correlates of suicidal ideation were poor economic status (vs. good, OR = 2.80, P = 0.008), heart disease (OR = 2.48, P = 0.005), chronic gastric ulcer (OR = 3.55, P = 0.012), arthritis (OR = 2.10, P = 0.042), and depressive symptoms (OR = 11.29, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Suicidal ideation is common among older adults attending Chinese primary care clinics. Background: This study examined and compared the attitudes and willingness of guardians of children with cancer and adult cancer patients toward donating biospecimens and clinical data for cancer research. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among guardians of children with cancer (Guardian group) from Shanghai Children's Medical Center and adult cancer patients (Adult group) from Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital between February 1, 2019, and January 31, 2020. Participants' demographic data, willingness, and motivations for biospecimen donation were collected and analyzed. Results: Of 670 participants, 90.8% (318/350) in the Guardian group and 88.1% (282/320) in the Adult group completed the questionnaire. Most participants were willing to donate residual tissue samples (92.8% in the Guardian group vs. 79.4% in the Adult group, pψ = 0.032) and clinical data (94.0% vs. 72.3%, pψ < 0.001) for medical research. Logistic regression analysis indicated that only child status (odds ratio [OR] = 0.140, p = 0.02), history of blood donation (OR = 4.467, p = 0.019) in the Guardian group, education (OR = 0.387, p = 0.037), and history of blood donation (OR = 2.556, p = 0.016) in the Adult group were significantly associated with participants' willingness to donate biospecimens. The primary motivation for donation was helping other patients with cancer (65.4% vs. 24.5%, pψ < 0.001). The major barriers to donation were the potential to cause physical discomfort (61.0% vs. 64.9%, pψ = 0.032). Conclusions: Guardians of children with cancer were more willing to donate biospecimens than adult cancer patients in China. BACKGROUND: The study aims to investigate the occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after earthquakes among the elderly. METHODS: Data from cross-sectional studies focusing on the prevalence of PTSD after earthquakes among the elderly were collected from PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure in December 2019. The search terms included post-traumatic stress disorder, earthquake, and elderly. This study used Review Manager 5.0 to evaluate the impact of the results. In addition, forest plots, sensitivity analysis, and bias analysis were carried out on the included articles. The combined estimate of the risk ratio and the standard deviation of the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were measurements of the size of the effect. RESULTS: There were 4,834 patients included from 10 eligible studies. The sample sizes of PTSD group and non-PTSD group were 1,277 and 3,557, respectively. The meta-analysis showed that the overall occurrence of PTSD after earthquakes among the elderly was 0.25; the occurrence in females was higher than that in males, and the occurrence in the same province indicated little difference (Wenchuan city 0.25 and Ya'an city 0.24). CONCLUSIONS: After earthquakes, the occurrence of PTSD is higher among the elderly than among other age groups, and higher among the females than among the males, while there is little difference among different areas within the same province. Objective: Comprehensive assessment of serum lipidomic aberrations before type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) onset has remained lacking in Han Chinese. We evaluated changes in lipid coregulation antecedent to T2DM and identified novel lipid predictors for T2DM in individuals with normal glucose regulation (NGR).Research Design and Methods: In the discovery study, we tested 667 baseline serum lipids in subjects with incident diabetes and propensity score-matched control subjects (n = 200) from a prospective cohort comprising 3,821 Chinese adults with NGR. In the validation study, we tested 250 lipids in subjects with incident diabetes and matched control subjects (n = 724) from a pooled validation cohort of 14,651 individuals with NGR covering five geographical regions across China. Differential correlation network analyses revealed perturbed lipid coregulation antecedent to diabetes. The predictive value of a serum lipid panel independent of serum triglycerides and 2-h postload glucose was also evaluated.Results: At the level of false-discovery rate <0.05, 38 lipids, including triacylglycerols (TAGs), lyso-phosphatidylinositols, phosphatidylcholines, polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-plasmalogen phosphatidylethanolamines (PUFA-PEps), and cholesteryl esters, were significantly associated with T2DM risk in the discovery and validation cohorts. A preliminary study found most of the lipid predictors were also significantly associated with the risk of prediabetes. Differential correlation network analysis revealed that perturbations in intraclass (i.e., non-PUFA-TAG and PUFA-TAGs) and interclass (i.e., TAGs and PUFA-PEps) lipid coregulation preexisted before diabetes onset. Objective: Uncertainty remains regarding the predictive value of various glycemic measures as they relate to the risk of diabetes and its complications. Using the cutoffs recommended by the American Diabetes Association's 2010 criteria, we determined the associations of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h postload glucose (2h-PG), and HbA1c with the outcomes.Research Design and Methods: Baseline medical history, FPG, 2h-PG, and HbA1c were obtained from a population-based cohort of 193,846 adults aged ≥40 years in China during 2011-2012. A follow-up visit was conducted during 2014-2016 in order to assess incident diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality.Results: We documented 8,063 cases of diabetes, 3,014 CVD-related events, 1,624 cases of cancer, and 2,409 deaths during up to 5 years of follow-up. Multivariable-adjusted risk ratios (95% CIs) of diabetes associated with prediabetes based on FPG of 100-125 mg/dL, 2h-PG of 140-199 mg/dL, or HbA1c of 5.7-6.4% (39-47 mmol/mol) were 1.60 (1.43-1.79), 2.72 (2.43-3.04), and 1.49 (1.36-1.62), respectively. Restricted cubic spline analyses suggested J-shaped associations of FPG, 2h-PG, and HbA1c levels with CVD, cancer, and mortality. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) associated with untreated diabetes based on FPG ≥126 mg/dL, 2h-PG ≥200 mg/dL, or HbA1c ≥6.5% (48 mmol/mol) were 1.18 (1.05-1.33), 1.31 (1.18-1.45), and 1.20 (1.07-1.34) for CVD; 1.10 (0.92-1.32), 1.44 (1.25-1.67), and 1.08 (0.92-1.28) for cancer; and 1.37 (1.20-1.57), 1.57 (1.41-1.76), and 1.33 (1.17-1.52) for mortality, respectively. 2h-PG remained significantly associated with outcomes in models including FPG and HbA1c as spline terms. Furthermore, 2h-PG significantly improved the ability of the C statistic to predict diabetes, CVD, and mortality.Conclusions: 2h-PG remains independently predictive of outcomes in models including FPG and HbA1c. Introduction and aim: This study aimed to confirm the association of the transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) E167K variant with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the degree of steatosis, as well as the additive effect of body mass index (BMI) or the patatin-like phospholipase domaincontaining protein 3 (PNPLA3) I148M and TM6SF2 E167K variants in NAFLD. Materials and methods: A total of 158 NAFLD patients and 158 matched controls were recruited. Steatosis was classified as mild, moderate and severe by FibroScan. Associations between the TM6SF2 E167K variant and NAFLD as well as clinical parameters were evaluated. Results: Although the frequency of the T allele was low in the Chinese population (MAF = 7.4%), there was still a significant association between the E167K variant and NAFLD (odds ratio = 3.379, 95% confidence interval: 1.500-7.612, P = 0.003). In particular, the TM6SF2 genotype was also associated with the degree of steatosis (P = 0.023). The TM6SF2 variant was associated with increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) but no other clinical parameters, such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lipids. Notably, we also found that an additive effect of the TM6SF2 E167K and PNPLA3 I148M variants in NAFLD. Furthermore, we did not identify an association between the TM6SF2 E167K variant and NAFLD in the non-obese population. Background. Quality of life (QOL) is an important primary care outcome, but the QOL of older adults treated in primary care is understudied in China. This study examined QOL and its associated factors in older adults treated in Chinese primary care. Methods. A total of 752 older patients (65C years) were consecutively recruited from 13 primary care centers in Wuhan, China, and interviewed with a standardized questionnaire, concerning socio-demographics, major medical conditions, loneliness, and depression. QOL and depression were measured with the Chinese six-item QOL questionnaire and the shortened Geriatric Depression Scale, respectively. Multiple linear regression was used to identify factors associated with poor QOL. Results. The average QOL score of primary care older adults was (20.7 ± 2.5), significantly lower than that of the Chinese general population. Factors significantly associated with poor QOL of Chinese primary care older adults included engaging in manual labor before older adulthood (unstandardized coefficient [β]: -0.702, P < 0:001), no living adult children (β: -1.720, P = 0.001), physical inactivity (β: -0.696, P <0.001), having β four major medical conditions (β: -1.813, P <0.001), hearing problem (β: -1.004, P = 0.017), depression (β: -1.153, P <0.001), and loneliness (β: -1.396, P < 0.001). Conclusions. Older adults treated in Chinese primary care have poorer QOL than the general population. Seagrass meadows (Zostera marina) are important coastal ecosystems with high levels of productivity and biodiversity. They often have high biomass turnover and are susceptible to dislodgment, leading to export of biomass from seagrass beds. In September 2016, two cruises covering a total area of 52 km x 15 km (38°57'1.14"–39° 0'41.28" N, 118°45'23.22"–118°47'6.96" E) found floating Z. marina aggregations along 13 km of the transect in the northernmost area of Bohai Bay, in the Bohai Sea, China. This floating seagrass was 6.3–13.4 km northeast (offshore) of the Caofeidian seagrass bed, which is a large (10 km2) seagrass bed discovered in 2015 in the Bohai Sea, China. The modal length of floating intact shoots (from meristem to longest leaf tip) matched samples from the Caofeidian seagrass bed. The dominant individuals lengths were 40–50 cm, with less than 5% of the total number of individuals found in larger size categories (80–90 and 90–100 cm). Remote sensing technologies can accurately capture environmental characteristics, and together with environmental modeling approaches, help to predict climate-sensitive infectious disease outbreaks. Brucellosis remains rampant worldwide in both domesticated animals and humans. This study used human brucellosis (HB) as a test case to identify important environmental determinants of the disease and predict its outbreaks. A novel artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed, using annual county-level numbers of HB cases and data on 37 environmental variables, potentially associated with HB in Inner Mongolia, China. Data from 2006 to 2008 were used to train, validate and test the model, while data for 2009–2010 were used to assess the model’s performance. The Enhanced Vegetation Index was identified as the most important predictor of HB incidence, followed by land surface temperature and other temperature- and precipitation-related variables. The suitable ecological niche of HB was modeled based on these predictors. Model estimates were found to be in good agreement with reported numbers of HB cases in both the model development and assessment phases. The study suggests that HB outbreaks may be predicted, with a reasonable degree of accuracy, using the ANN model and environmental variables obtained from satellite data. Water resources provided by alpine glaciers are an important pillar for people in the arid regions of west China. In this study, the Hydrologiska Byrans Vattenavdelning (HBV) light model was applied to simulate glacier mass balance (GMB) and runoff in the Koxkar River Basin (KRB) on the south slope of Mount Tumur, in the western Tianshan Mountains. Daily temperature and precipitation were calculated by multiple linear regressions and gradient-inverse distance weighting, respectively, based on in-situ observed data by automatic weather stations (AWSs) in the Koxkar River Basin (KRB; 2007-2009) and four meteorological stations neighboring the basin (1959-2009). Observed daily air temperature and precipitation were input into HBV model. The runoff data in 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 were used to calibrate and validate the model in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. Generally, the model simulated runoff very well. The annual glacier mass balance and runoff were calculated by the HBV model and were driven by interpolated meteorological data between 1959 and 2009. The calculated glacier mass balances were reasonable, and were compared with nearby glaciers. The results indicate the decreasing trend of mass balance in the Koxkar Glacier, with an average value of ablation of --370.4 mm.a--1 between 1959 and 2009. This article measures and calculates tourism efficiency in Chinese national scenic areas. In order to analyse the characteristics of multi-scale fluctuations, the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and wavelet decomposition methods are adopted. Specific Chinese national scenic areas are divided into several zones, with conclusions provided about the impact of economic fluctuations on their tourism efficiency. The results are as follows. The tourism efficiency of Chinese national scenic areas overall is not high; most have not yet reached data envelopment analysis (DEA) optimization; and the quasiperiodicity of scenic areas' tourism efficiency mainly fluctuates between 2.42 and 9.67 years. Owing to the effects of extraneous factors, the significance of pure technical efficiency declined, which illustrates that economic development could promote technological progress, but technological progress is not a sufficient and necessary condition of economic development; studies of different periods show that a downward economic fluctuation will also facilitate technological improvement and promotion, which is the embodiment of the inverse periodicity of technological progress. Objective: Risk factors for chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) were not clearly established. The study was to investigate the etiological factors for CSOM from a population of Han adults in China. Methods: A case-control study was conducted at Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, School of Medicine in China. A total of 416 individuals participated in this study, which included 206 cases and 210 controls. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed male (OR=0.42; 95% CI: 0.21-0.83), BMI increasing (OR=0.85; 95% CI: 0.77-0.93), URTI (OR=152.85; 95% CI: 34.11-684.93), smoke/passive smoke (OR=7.11; 95% CI: 3.36-15.07), residential location (urban area) (OR=0.27; 95% CI: 0.13-0.56), serum calcium increasing (OR=0.09; 95% CI: 0.01-0.71) were prime risk factors for CSOM. Univariate analysis revealed that low socioeconomic status (OR=2.33; 95% CI: 1.57-3.45) and hepatitis B (OR=4.90; 95% CI: 1.82-13.21) were risk factors together with the above variables. Conclusion: This study has identified several variables as risk factors for CSOM, suggesting better healthcare, living condition, as well as better nutrition might decrease the development of CSOM. We aimed to explore the causal association between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and increased arterial stiffness. We performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis in 11,385 participants from a well-defined community study in Shanghai during 2011-2013. We genotyped 34 T2D-associated common variants identified in East Asians and created a genetic risk score (GRS). We assessed arterial stiffness noninvasively with the measurement of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). We used the instrumental variable (IV) estimator to qualify the causal relationship between T2D and increased arterial stiffness. We found each 1-SD increase in T2D_GRS was associated with 6% higher risk in increased arterial stiffness (95% CI 1.01, 1.12), after adjustment of other metabolic confounders. Using T2D_GRS as the IV, we demonstrated a causal relationship between T2D and arterial stiffening (odds ratio 1.24, 95% CI 1.06, 1.47; P = 0.008). When categorizing the genetic loci according to their effect on insulin secretion or resistance, we found genetically determined decrease in insulin secretion was associated with increase in baPWV (βIV = 122.3 cm/s, 95% CI 41.9, 204.6; P = 0.0005). Background: End-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection are increasingly common causes of death among HIV-infected individuals. However, there are few clinical investigations of HIV/HCV co-infected individuals from low and middle-income nations. Here, we compare the epidemiology of HCV-infected and HIV/HCV co-infected individuals in Southern China and examine hepatic fibrosis scores in co-infected individuals.Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of treatment-naïve HIV/HCV co-infected and HCV mono-infected subjects. Bivariate and multivariate models were used to examine the association between demographics and HCV genotype. Among co-infected individuals, we also studied the relationship between fibrosis scores derived from non-invasive studies and HCV genotype.Results: Data were collected from 175 HCV-infected individuals, including 89 (51 %) HIV/HCV co-infected individuals. HIV/HCV co-infection was correlated with intravenous drug use (AOR 46.25, p < 0.001) and not completing high school (AOR 17.39, p < 0.001) in a multivariate model. HIV/HCV co-infected individuals were more likely to be infected with HCV genotype 6a (p < 0.0001) or 3a (p < 0.023), whereas increased fibrosis (FIB-4 score) was associated with HCV genotype 3a infection (β 2.18, p < 0.001).Discussion: Our results suggest that intravenous drug use is driving HIV/HCV co-infection in Southern China. While additional studies are needed, HCV genotype 6a is more common and genotype 3a appears to be associated with more severe hepatic fibrosis in co-infected individuals.Conclusions: Future HIV/HCV co-infection research in China should focus on at risk populations, HCV testing uptake, and genotype-specific treatment. IMPORTANCE Noncommunicable chronic diseases have become the leading causes of mortality and disease burden worldwide. OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence of diabetes and glycemic control in the Chinese adult population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Using a complex, multistage, probability sampling design, we conducted a cross-sectional survey in a nationally representative sample of 98 658 Chinese adults in 2010. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Plasma glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels were measured after at least a 10-hour overnight fast among all study participants, and a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test was conducted among participants without a self-reported history of diagnosed diabetes. Diabetes and prediabetes were defined according to the 2010 American Diabetes Association criteria; whereas, a hemoglobin A1c level of <7.0% was considered adequate glycemic control. RESULTS The overall prevalence of diabetes was estimated to be 11.6% (95% CI, 11.3%-11.8%) in the Chinese adult population. The prevalence among men was 12.1% (95% CI, 11.7%-12.5%) and among women was 11.0% (95% CI, 10.7%-11.4%). The prevalence of previously diagnosed diabetes was estimated to be 3.5% (95% CI, 3.4%-3.6%) in the Chinese population: 3.6% (95% CI, 3.4%-3.8%) in men and 3.4% (95% CI, 3.2%-3.5%) in women. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes was 8.1% (95% CI, 7.9%-8.3%) in the Chinese population: 8.5% (95% CI, 8.2%-8.8%) in men and 7.7% (95% CI, 7.4%-8.0%) in women. In addition, the prevalence of prediabetes was estimated to be 50.1% (95% CI, 49.7%-50.6%) in Chinese adults: 52.1% (95% CI, 51.5%-52.7%) in men and 48.1% (95% CI, 47.6%-48.7%) in women. The prevalence of diabetes was higher in older age groups, in urban residents, and in persons living in economically developed regions. Among patients with diabetes, only 25.8% (95% CI, 24.9%-26,8%) received treatment for diabetes, and only 39.7% (95% CI, 37.6%-41.8%) of those treated had adequate glycemic control. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The estimated prevalence of diabetes among a representative sample of Chinese adults was 11.6% and the prevalence of prediabetes was 50.1%. Projections based on sample weighting suggest this may represent up to 113.9 million Chinese adults with diabetes and 493.4 million with prediabetes. Chinese calligraphy has been scientifically investigated within the contexts and principles of psychology, cognitive science, and the cognitive neuroscience. On the basis of vast amount of research in the last 30 years, we have developed a cybernetic theory of handwriting and calligraphy to account for the intricate interactions of several psychological dimensions involved in the dynamic act of graphic production. Central to this system of writing are the role of sensory, bio-, cognitive, and neurofeedback mechanisms for the initiation, guidance, and regulation of the writing motions vis-a-vis visual-geometric variations of Chinese characters. This experiment provided the first evidence of cortical excitation in EEG theta wave as a neural hub that integrates information coming from changes in the practitioner's body, emotions, and cognition. Qiangli Tianma Duzhong capsule (TMDZ), a Chinese herbal drug, is clinically used to improve functional outcome in patients with ischemic stroke in China. This study was conducted to establish whether postischemic long-term treatment with TMDZ could reduce the loss of injured hemisphere and confer the improvements of neurological outcome in chronic survival of rats with 2 h middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)/reperfusion brain injury and its primary mechanisms. We found that TMDZ (44.5, 89, or 178mg/kg), administered per os 6 h after the onset of ischemia and for 28 consecutive days, significantly improved the behavior deficits, beginning on day 7, and further improved later. TMDZ treatment also markedly reduced the tissue loss of the injured hemisphere and improved histopathology. In the meantime, TMDZ treatment could improve hemorrheology and inhibit platelet aggregation. These results provide the first evidence that post-ischemic long-term treatment with TMDZ confers the improvements of neurological outcome and the loss of injured hemisphere in an animal ischemic stroke model, and its mechanisms might be associated with the improvements of hemorrheology and the inhibition of platelet aggregation. Background: Greater bisphenol A exposure has been shown to be associated with a higher risk for self-reported adverse health outcomes, including diabetes. Objective: To examine the association between bisphenol A exposure and type 2 diabetes in adults. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Songnan, Baoshan District, Shanghai, China. Participants: 3423 local residents aged 40 years or older who were enrolled from 27 June 2008 to 10 August 2009. Measurements: Urinary concentrations of bisphenol A from morning spot urine samples (exposure) and fasting plasma glucose concentration, plasma glucose concentration 2 hours after an oral glucose tolerance test, and serum insulin concentration (outcomes). Results: Median age of the participants was 59.0 years (interquartile range, 53.0 to 68.7 years), 40% were men, and 1087 had type 2 diabetes. The median urinary bisphenol A level was 0.81 ng/mL (interquartile range, 0.47 to 1.43 ng/mL). Clinical characteristics differed between participants with normal glucose regulation and those with impaired glucose regulation and by bisphenol A quartile, but in multivariable analyses, there was no clear association between bisphenol A levels and type 2 diabetes. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of type 2 diabetes was slightly increased for participants in the second bisphenol A quartile (0.48 to 0.81 ng/mL) (adjusted OR, 1.30 [95% CI, 1.03 to 1.64]) and the fourth quartile (>1.43 ng/mL) (adjusted OR, 1.37 [CI, 1.08 to 1.74]) but not the third quartile (0.82 to 1.43 ng/mL) (adjusted OR, 1.09 [CI, 0.86 to 1.39]), and a test of the trend of the association was not statistically significant. Limitations: The cross-sectional study design and nonrandom sample of participants limit the conclusions that can be drawn. Many patients in the study already had diabetes, successful treatment of which could have obscured apparent associations. Dietary variables were not measured; however, this is necessary in observational studies of bisphenol A and diabetes because the presence of the chemical in the body may reflect consumption of sugared drinks in plastic bottles. Although associations of the liver enzymes alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) and -glutamyltransferase (GGT) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) are well recognized, whether they are independent of insulin resistance and which enzyme is more effective are yet to be clarified. A total of 5404 subjects aged ≥40 years were recruited from two urban communities in Shanghai for cross-sectional analyses. A subgroup of 681 participants without MetS at baseline was included in the longitudinal analyses. Insulin resistance was measured using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and the modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were adopted to diagnose MetS. Both GGT and ALT were strongly and positively associated with MetS risks in simple and multivariate analyses. Further adjustment for HOMA-IR and ALT did not change the association of GGT and MetS materially, whereas adjustment for HOMA-IR and GGT substantially attenuated the ALT-MetS association. In longitudinal analyses, risks of developing MetS were increased across GGT quartiles in a dose-dependent manner after extensive adjustments (odds ratios were 1.00, 1.38, 1.62, and 2.29 for GGT, quartile 1 through quartile 4; P for trend = 0.01). In contrast, ALT was no longer associated with MetS development after final adjustment for GGT ( P for trend = 0.09). Our study confirmed significant and independent associations of GGT and ALT with MetS in adult Chinese people. Moreover, GGT might be more effective for indicating the future development of MetS. Background: Panax notoginseng is an important Chinese medicinal plant. Dammarene-type triterpenoid saponins are main pharmacologically effective compounds in P. notoginseng. This study aims to investigate the formation and accumulation of saponins in P. notoginseng roots during germination and juvenile stage. Methods: P. notoginseng seeds were collected and stored in wet sand. After germination, the seedlings were transplanted into a soil nursery bed and cultivated for one year. During this period, samples were collected every month and the concentrations of ginsengnosides Rg1, Re, Rb1, Rd and notoginsengnoside R1 were determined by HPLC. Results: There was little saponin in the P. notoginseng seed. The chemical composition of seed was different from that of root. After germination, Rb1, Rg1, Re, Rd and R1 appeared successively in the seedling root. And in the fivemonth- old root, all these five main saponins came into existence. The accumulation of saponins in P. notoginseng root was affected by seasons. Conclusion: The accumulation of saponins showed a time-dependent increase after germination of P. notoginseng. Over 80% of the α-thalassemia cases in southern China are caused by large deletions involving the α-globin gene cluster on chromosome 16p13.3. Here, we characterized a novel 27.6-kb deletion on the α-globin gene cluster in a Chinese family. Its breakpoints were detected to lie between coordinates 9079 and 36718 of the α-globin gene cluster (NG_000006.1), with a total of 27,640 nucleotides deleted. It was designated as −α deletion. The proband is a compound heterozygote of −− and −α and he displayed very mild hemoglobin H disease phenotype with Hb 7.9-9.3 g/dl. Phenotypic analysis on heterozygote of this deletion revealed it as α mutation. It leads to a very mild phenotype as adult heterozygotes have normal hematological parameters with the values at the lower border of the normal range. Background: Many susceptible loci for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have recently been identified from Caucasians through genome wide association studies (GWAS). We aimed to determine the association of 11 known loci with T2DM and impaired glucose regulation (IGR), individually and in combination, in Chinese. Methods/Principal Findings: Subjects were enrolled in: (1) a case-control study including 1825 subjects with T2DM, 1487 with IGR and 2200 with normal glucose regulation; and (2) a prospective cohort with 734 non-diabetic subjects at baseline. The latter was followed up for 3.5 years, in which 67 subjects developed T2DM. Nineteen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected to replicate in both studies. We found that CDKAL1 (rs7756992), SLC30A8 (rs13266634, rs2466293), CDKN2A/2B (rs10811661) and KCNQ1 (rs2237892) were associated with T2DM with odds ratio from 1.21 to 1.35. In the prospective study, the fourth quartile of risk scores based on the combined effects of the risk alleles had 3.05 folds (95% CI, 1.31-7.12) higher risk for incident T2DM as compared with the first quartile, after adjustment for age, gender, body mass index and diabetes family history. This combined effect was confirmed in the case-control study after the same adjustments. The addition of the risk scores to the model of clinical risk factors modestly improved discrimination for T2DM by 1.6% in the case-control study and 2.9% in the prospective study. Conclusions/Significance: Our study provided further evidence for these GWAS derived SNPs as the genetic susceptible loci for T2DM in Chinese and extended this association to IGR. We extended our previous genome-wide association study for psoriasis with a multistage replication study including 8,312 individuals with psoriasis (cases) and 12,919 controls from China as well as 3,293 cases and 4,188 controls from Germany and the United States and 254 nuclear families from the United States. We identified six new susceptibility loci associated with psoriasis in the Chinese study containing the candidate genes ERAP1, PTTG1, CSMD1, GJB2, SERPINB8 and ZNF816A (combined P < 5 × 10−8) and replicated one locus, 5q33.1 (TNIP1-ANXA6), previously reported (combined P = 3.8 × 10−21) in the European studies. Two of these loci showed evidence for association in the German study at ZNF816A and GJB2 with P = 3.6 × 10−3 and P = 7.9 × 10−3, respectively. ERAP1 and ZNF816A were associated with type 1 (early onset) psoriasis in the Chinese Han population (test for heterogeneity P = 6.5 × 10−3 and P = 1.5 × 10−3, respectively). Comparisons with the results of previous GWAS of psoriasis highlight the heterogeneity of disease susceptibility between the Chinese and European populations. Screening for carriers of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is necessary for effective clinical/prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. However, a population-based study of SMA prevalence in mainland China has not yet been conducted. In this study, the copy number of survival motor neuron (SMN) genes was determined in 1712 newborn cord blood samples collected from southern China and from 25 core families, which included 26 SMA patients and 44 parents, to identify SMA carriers. The results presented 13 groups with different SMN1/SMN2 ratios among 1712 newborn individuals, which corresponded to 1535 subjects with two copies of SMN1, 119 with three copies of SMN1, 17 with four copies of SMN1, and 41 with a heterozygous deletion of SMN1 exon 7. Simultaneously, two ‘2+0’ genotypes and two point mutations were found among the 44 obligate carriers in the core families, including a novel SMN1 splice-site mutation that was identified in the junction between intron 6 and exon 7 (c. 835–1G>A). These results indicated that the carrier frequency is 1/42 in the general Chinese population and that duplicated SMN1 alleles and de novo deletion mutations are present in a small number of SMA carriers. In addition, we developed and validated a new alternative screening method using a reverse dot blot assay for rapid genotyping of deletional SMA. Our research elucidated the genetic load and SMN gene variants that are present in the Chinese population, and could serve as the basis for a nationwide program of genetic counseling and clinical/prenatal diagnosis to prevent SMA in China. Objective: This study examined changes in brain grey matter in victims of rape (VoR) with and without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research has focused on PTSD caused by various traumatic events, such as war and disaster, among others. Although considerable research has focused on rape-related PTSD, limited studies have been carried out in the context of Mainland China. Methods: The study included 11 VoR with PTSD, 8 VoR without PTSD and 12 healthy comparison (HC) subjects. We used voxel-based morphometry to explore changes in brain grey-matter density (GMD) by applying statistical parametric mapping to high-resolution magnetic resonance images. Results: Compared with HC, VoR with PTSD showed significant GMD reductions in the bilateral medial frontal cortex, left middle frontal cortex, middle temporal gyrus and fusiform cortex and significant GMD increases in the right posterior cingulate cortex, postcentral cortex, bilateral precentral cortex and inferior parietal lobule. Compared to VoR without PTSD, VoR with PTSD showed significant GMD reductions in the right uncus, left middle temporal gyrus, and the fusiform cortex, and increases in the left precentral cortex, inferior parietal lobule and right post-central cortex. Conclusion: The findings of abnormal GMD in VoR with PTSD support the hypothesis that PTSD is associated with widespread anatomical changes in the brain. The medial frontal cortex, precentral cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, post-central cortex and inferior parietal lobule may play important roles in the neuropathology of PTSD. Objective Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and microalbuminuria are predictors of cardiovascular disease. The association of these factors of cardiovascular risk with fasting and 2-h postload plasma glucose in a group of Chinese subjects was investigated. Design This was a cross-sectional cohort study. Subjects and methods In 1776 subjects randomly selected from the permanent residents of a community in the city of Shanghai, China, a simplified 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (fasting and 2-h postload blood sampling only) was performed, and serum CRP concentrations and urinary albumin : creatinine ratio were measured. Results Serum CRP concentration significantly increased from 1·62 mg/l in normoglycaemic subjects to 2·63 mg/l in subjects with impaired glucose regulation, and to 3·09 mg/l in newly diagnosed diabetic patients ( P < 0·0001). The corresponding prevalence of microalbuminuria also increased from 4·3% to 6·6% and to 11·4% ( P < 0·0001). Both before and after adjustment for confounders, fasting and 2-h postload plasma glucose levels were significantly associated with serum CRP concentration and the risk of microalbuminuria ( P < 0·003). However, the association for CRP tended to be more prominent with 2-h postload plasma glucose than with fasting plasma glucose. Indeed, with adjustments applied, for 1 SD change in fasting and 2-h postload plasma glucose concentration, serum CRP concentration increased by 14% and 18% (between the two regression coefficients, P = 0·01), respectively. With similar adjustments, for 1 SD change in fasting and 2-h postload plasma glucose concentration, the odds of microalbuminuria increased by 28% and 32% ( P = 0·28 for the difference between 28% and 32%), respectively. Conclusions Our finding suggests that in Chinese plasma glucose, especially 2-h postload, is associated with biological markers of cardiovascular disease, such as serum CRP concentration and microalbuminuria. The 4-bp deletion (-CTTT) at codon 41/42 (CD41/42) of the human β-globin gene represents one of the most common β-thalassemia mutations in East Asia and Southeast Asia, which is historically afflicted with endemic malaria, thus hypothetically evolving under natural selection by malaria infection. To understand the evolutionary process of generating the βCD41/42 allele and its maintenance, including the effect of natural selection on the pattern of linkage disequilibrium (LD), we sequenced a 15.933-kb region spanning 20.693 kb of the β-globin cluster surrounding the 4-bp deletion using a sample from a Chinese population consisting of 24 normal individuals and 16 heterozygotes for the deletion. Forty-nine polymorphic sites were found. Analysis of the data, using a variety of methods including formal population genetics analysis and visual approaches, suggests that the spread of the CD41/42 (-CTTT) deletion is most likely mediated by interallelic gene conversion, although independent deletions in different lineages are also possible. The neutrality test resulted in a significant positive Tajima’s D for the β-globin locus, which is consistent with the existence of balancing selection. This suggests that the 4-bp deletion that occurred at this locus may be an event that is subject to natural selection, due to malaria, which leads to the heterozygote advantage, spread widely with further help by conversion and migration. The evolutionary process of this mutant through gene conversion that could conceivably take place between the 4-bp deletion and the normal sequence in the respective region is discussed in detail. The chemistry and deposition pattern in bulk precipitation and throughfall (TF) were examined and evaluated based on the 3-year observations in Shaoshan subtropical deciduous-conifer mixed forest in central-south China. The TF chemistry was notably changed when passing through canopies, which probably was attributed to the dry deposition (DD) on leaf surface and the canopy exchanges. Base cations' (Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+) fluxes were significantly enriched in TF, in particular for K+. The annual K+ canopy exchange was ∼12 times larger than DD, and canopy exchange of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ was four times as high as the DD. The canopy exchange of base cations in association with weak acid accounted for 28.4 per cent of total leached base cations, which was one of the important factors to modify the TF chemistry. The piebald odorous frog ( Odorrana schmackeri), the large odorous frog ( Odorrana livida) and the concave-eared torrent frog ( Amolops tormotus) are sympatric species living near the same torrent streams in the vicinity of Mt. Huangshan, China. A recent study demonstrated that A. tormotus can use sound signals involving ultrasonic components for communication in a noisy environment, and another sympatric species, O. livida, can also perceive ultrasonic sound. Here we report data on the hearing range of O. schmackeri by studying auditory evoked potentials and single-unit data from the torus semicircularis. This frog exhibits its two most sensitive peaks at 2 kHz and 3.5–4.0 kHz with thresholds <42 dB SPL, with an upper frequency limit of hearing at 8.5 kHz with threshold of 87 dB SPL. The upper limit is much lower than those of O. livida and A. tormotus, at 22 and 34 kHz, respectively. Coastal and marine areas have huge ecosystem values. However, intensive anthropogenic activities have largely changed coastal landscapes. In this research investigation, sediment and water samples were collected to clarify the distribution patterns and sources of heavy metals in the rapid growing urbanization areas of Haizhou Bay in China's Jiangsu Province. The physical and chemical properties of the water and sediment were tested. Meanwhile, the ecological toxicity levels of heavy metals were also examined using the Igeo accumulation index, and the potential ecological risk index (PERI), respectively. The results revealed that the water and sediments of the marine ecosystems had an unpolluted status, with the element concentrations not exceeding the threshold effect levels. In terms of the spatial distribution patterns of the heavy metal concentrations in the water samples, it was determined that the Cd concentration was only 0.10 µg/L in the western area, and the highest concentration value was found in the northeastern area. The concentration levels of As in the sediments exhibited higher concentrations mainly in the southern area of Haizhou Bay. The results obtained in this study can help increase the awareness of the mitigating actions that coastal areas naturally provide against pollution and also provide valuable information for the design of future plans and policies that will progress toward a more sustainable development of the such areas. Background and Objectives: The associations between oil tea and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been little studied in the population. This study aimed to evaluate whether oil tea intake is related to the reduced risk of T2D in adults. Methods and Study Design: A rural-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County, Guangxi, southern China (2018-2019), with a total of 3178 population included in the final analysis. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations between the intake frequency, daily intake of oil tea and the risk of T2D. We further compared the association differences between the daily intake of oil tea and the risk of diabetes under different dietary patterns, which were generated from food frequency intake data using principal factor analysis. Results: The differences in the frequency and daily intake of oil tea in both groups (diabetes group and the non-diabetes group) were statistically significant (p<0.05). After adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), compared with non-oil tea drinkers, intake ≥3 times /d had an inverse association with T2D (OR=0.417; 95% CI: 0.205--0.848, p<0.05); while daily intake of more than 600 mL/d but less than 900 mL/d was significantly associated with reduced T2D risk (OR=0.492; 95% CI: 0.284-0.852, p=0.011). In the Chinese traditional dietary and the plant-based dietary model, compared with the non-oil tea drinkers, the fourth intake group had a lower risk of diabetes, with an OR (95%CI) value of 0.500 (0.291-0.854) and 0.505 (0.298-0.855), respectively, but no statistical significance (All p>0.05). The Mesoproterozoic Xiamaling shales from Xiahuayuan area, southeastern Xuanlong sag, Northern China, were examined the elemental analysis by applying the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP–MS). The Xiamaling shales have good to excellent oil hydrocarbon generation potential with type II kerogenas demonstrated by high content of alginate macerals, TOC, HI, S 1 + S 2 and extractable organic matter (EOM). The Xiamaling shales were deposited under a marine environment according to boron (B) (56–111 ppm) and other trace elements concentration, which is consistent with the geological settings. These shales can be classified into three types: (1) Type I is a coastal facies, which is influenced by fresh riverine water and has low B content of 56–61 ppm; (2) Type II is a marginal marine with B content of 73–79 ppm; and (3) type III has high B content of 111 ppm, typical of a brackish, and open marine environment. The Xiamaling shales have high B (>50 ppm), low Na, Ca, Ce, Mn, and rare earth elements (REEs). According to the elemental composition and ratios, the Xiamaling sediments were derived from the felsic source, which has suffered from moderate to strong chemical weathering based on the CIA, ICV, and PIA values. The Xiamaling marine shales were mostly deposited under dysoxic-anoxic conditions. The paleoclimate during the deposition of the Xiamaling shales was warm and humid based on the cross plots of Sr/Ca vs Mn/Ca values and Sr/Cu vs Rb/Sr ratios. Their total REE (ΣREE) contents increase from coastal towards the open marine zone. The Xiamaling shales display a negative Ce anomaly, representative of marine shale, and show a negative Eu anomaly, which is representative of lacustrine oil shale and the Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) and is different from typical marine shale of younger age, indicating the influx of terrestrial sediment. • The Mesoproterozoic Xiamaling shales were deposited in marine environment under humid tropical condition. • The provenance of the Xiamaling shales was felsic volcanic rocks, which suffered moderate to strong chemical weathering. • The redox condition was dysoxic-anoxic during the deposition of the Xiamaling shales. • The Xiamaling shales have good to excellent oil hydrocarbon generation potential with type II kerogen. The article discusses trends in HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing, China. It uses data from three consecutive cross-sectional surveys measuring the prevalence of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus among MSM from 2004 to 2006. The study showed that there is a possible increase in the incidences of HIV and risky sexual behavior in MSM. It recommends measures to prevent HIV, including MSM-friendly HIV testing and health provider education.

The overmature Precambrian to Lower Paleozoic marine shales from China contain relatively simple organic matter (OM) composition, which is dominated by in-source solid bitumen (i.e., solid bitumen in the hydrocarbon source rocks). The thermal evolution behavior of the original OM and the determination of thermal maturity in the Precambrian to Cambrian marine shales have been challenging for decades. The vitrinite-like maceral (VLM) is widely present in these marine shales, and its origin is still unknown. To address these issues, the immature Proterozoic Xiamaling shales from China and the immature Cambrian Alum shales from Sweden, and a Chinese immature Carboniferous coal were heat-treated at temperature range of 300 °C to 550 °C. The carbonized residue of the artificially matured samples was examined for their morphological and reflectance variation, and the results were compared with data on the other overmature natural shales from China and Sweden. OM components are similar in the Xiamaling and Alum immature oil shales, consisting of filamentous algae, matrix bituminite, bituminite, VLM and liptodetrinite, and rare thucholites are present in the Xiamaling shales. The algal-derived OM decomposed gradually due to hydrocarbon generation at 300–350 °C. OM is mainly composed of the in-source solid bitumen in the artificially heated shales after 350 °C, similar to the overmature Precambrian to Cambrian natural shales, and the in-source solid bitumen gradually loses its mass with increasing thermal maturity. The in-source solid bitumen is derived from the thermal cracking of the retained oil or the direct conversion of algal-derived liptinite macerals (e.g., the bituminite) or their mixture. VLM in the Xiamaling oil shales can not be observed after 350 °C, but VLM is still present in the Alum oil shales. It can be inferred that there is a different source of VLM in these shales, and VLM in the Xiamaling oil shales contains more volatile material. The VLM in the Xiamaling shales may be biodegradation products of liptinites under anoxic environments. The origin of VLM in the Cambrian Alum shales requires further study to be verified, although it is certain that graptolites are not its sources. The reflectance of in-source solid bitumen (SBR o) increases with heat-treated temperature in both the Xiamaling shales and the Alum shales, but at different rates, which may be due to the difference of the original kerogen composition in these shales. VLM reflectance (VLMR o) and SBR o in sections perpendicular to bedding can be used to determine the maturation level of the Precambrian-Cambrian sediments. Their relation to equivalent vitrinite reflectance (EqVR o) can be expressed by the following equations: EqVR o = 1.07 × VLMR o – 0.18, EqVR o = 0.87 × SBR o + 0.25 (in the Precambrian sediments) and EqVR o = 1.15 × SBR o + 0.01 (in the Cambrian sediments). • The vitrinite-like macerals have different thermal evolution behavior and origin. • The formation mechanism of in-source solid bitumen has been determined. • Thermal maturity indicators have been studied for the Precambrian-Cambrian shales. • In-source solid bitumen is the predominant composition in the postmature shales.
