Background Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a global public health concern. We performed this systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effects and safety of traditional Chinese mind-body exercises (TCME) for patients with CFS. Methods We comprehensively searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, CNKI, VIP databases, and Wanfang Data from inception to October 2022 for eligible RCTs of TCME for CFS management. We used Cochran's Q statistic and I2 to assess heterogeneity and conducted subgroup analyses based on different types of TCME, background therapy, and types of fatigue. We also assessed the quality of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. Results We included 13 studies (n=1187) with a maximal follow-up of 12 weeks. TCME included Qigong and Tai Chi. At the end of the treatment, compared with passive control, TCME probably reduces the severity of fatigue (standardised mean differences (SMD)=0.85; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.64, 1.07, moderate certainty), depression (SMD=0.53; 95% CI=0.34, 0.72, moderate certainty), anxiety (SMD=0.29; 95% CI=0.11, 0.48, moderate certainty), sleep quality (SMD=0.34; 95% CI=0.10, 0.57, low certainty) and mental functioning (SMD=0.90; 95% CI=0.50, 1.29, low certainty). Compared with other active control therapies, TCME results in little to no difference in the severity of fatigue (SMD= 0.08; 95% CI = -0.18, 0.34, low certainty). For long-term outcomes, TCME may improve anxiety (SMD= 1.74; 95% CI = 0.44, 3.03, low certainty) compared to passive control. We did not identify TCME-related serious adverse events. Conclusions In patients with CFS, TCME probably reduces post-intervention fatigue, depression, and anxiety and may improve sleep quality and mental function compared with passive control, but has limited long-term effects. Background: Herniation of the nucleus pulposus caused by disc degeneration and other reasons can cause low back pain and disability. In China, traditional Chinese exercises (TCEs) and traditional Chinese massage (TCM) are widely used to improve symptoms of pain and disability in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The safety and efficacy of combination therapy have not been studied. Objectives: To assess the effect of traditional Chinese exercise combined with massage vs. traditional Chinese massage alone on pain, disability, lumbar mobility and gait performance in patients with LDH. Methods: Multi-center, randomized clinical trial conducted at 4 hospitals in China and enrolling 272 patients with LDH. Participants were randomly assigned to TCEs plus TCM group or TCM alone group. The combined therapy group received 18 Tai Chi training sessions (30-min sessions 3 times a week) and regular TCM treatments over 6 weeks. The control group received TCM therapy alone and was instructed to maintain their usual daily physical activity. Outcome variables measured included Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Short Form of McGill PainQuestionnaire (SF-MPQ), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) and gait performance. Results: Among the 272 randomized participants, 259 completed the study. The mean VAS score was 51.77mm at baseline in the TCEs plus TCM group, and 50.93mm for the TCM alone group. The reduction in the VAS score at week 6 was greater in the TC group than in the TCM group with a mean difference of 4.05 (95% CI, 2.15-5.95; P < 0.001), and the ODI score with between-group differences of 3.57 points (95% CI, 2.84-4.30 points; P < 0.001). Similar significantly different results were observed in SF-MPQ, walking speed, cadence, and lumbar ROM. No serious adverse events were reported throughout the study period. Conclusion: Compared with TCM alone, TCEs combined with TCM treatment performed better in reducing pain and improving disability. The combination therapy could be considered a valuable treatment option for LDH patients, with potential therapeutic utility for middle-aged and elderly patients with LDH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dramatic economic development in China has been associated with increasing ruralurban migration in the past decades. However, while most elders were left behind in rural hometowns, it is unclear whether the family members' migration impacts their food and nutrition security. Drawn from the panel data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey between 2000 and 2011, this is the first study conducted in China to explore these impacts, specifically on rural elders. The results highlight some degree of improvement in elders' food quantity, but not overall quality. Therefore, it is suggested that more attention needs to be paid to disadvantaged seniors' food and nutrition security in rural China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been increasing worldwide, and the risk of infection has increased due to the use of immunosuppressive and biologic medications. Some of these infections can be prevented with vaccinations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vaccination practices of Chinese gastroenterologists for patients with IBD. Methods: Questionnaires based on quick response codes were sent using email and the WeChat platform to gastroenterologists at 20 hospitals in China. The vaccination practices of the gastroenterologists, including vaccinating for hepatitis B, hepatitis A, and varicella, were assessed. Results: Of the 468 gastroenterologists who received the questionnaire, 307 (65.6%) completed it. Of the gastroenterologists who were most concerned about hepatitis B; 83.4% always or frequently asked about an infection history, 53.7% took an immunization history, and 73.6% tested patients for hepatitis B infection. However, few gastroenterologists did so for hepatitis A or varicella. The proportion of patients who were asked about an infection and immunization history and tested for varicella infection was 16.0%, 15.0%, and 9.4%, respectively. Only a few gastroenterologists recommended vaccination for patients without an infection before IBD medical treatment (26.7% for hepatitis A, 45.6% for hepatitis B, and 28% for varicella vaccination). Conclusion: Vaccination practices for patients with IBD used by Chinese gastroenterologists vary greatly, suggesting that education about immunization is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Study Context: Elderly people do not categorize emotional facial expressions as accurately as younger people, particularly negative emotions. Although age-related impairments in decoding emotions in facial expressions are well documented, the causes of this deficit are poorly understood. This study examined the potential mechanisms that account for this age-related categorization deficit by assessing its dependence on presentation time. Methods: Thirty young (19–27 years old) and 31 older (68–78 years old) Chinese adults were asked to categorize the six basic emotions in facial expressions, each presented for 120, 200, 600, or 1000 ms, before and after exposure to a neutral facial expression. Results: Shortened presentation times caused an age-related deficit in the recognition of happy faces, whereas no deficit was observed at longer exposure times. An age-related deficit was observed for all negative emotions but was not exacerbated by shorter presentation times. Conclusion: Age-related deficits in categorization of positive and negative emotions are caused by different mechanisms. Because negative emotions are perceptually similar, they cause high categorization demands. Elderly people may need more evidence in favor of the target emotion than younger people, and they make mistakes if this surplus of evidence is missing. In contrast, perceptually distinct happy faces were easily identified, and elderly people only failed when the presentation time was too short for their slower perceptual processing. Researchers have proposed that the culture in which we are raised shapes the way that we attend to the objects and events that surround us. What remains unclear, however, is how early any such culturally-inflected differences emerge in development. Here, we address this issue directly, asking how 24-month-old infants from the US and China deploy their attention to objects and actions in dynamic scenes. By analyzing infants' eye movements while they observed dynamic scenes, the current experiment revealed striking convergences, overall, in infants' patterns of visual attention in the two communities, but also pinpointed a brief period during which their attention reliably diverged. This divergence, though modest, suggested that infants from the US devoted relatively more attention to the objects and those from China devoted relatively more attention to the actions in which they were engaged. This provides the earliest evidence for strong overlap in infants' attention to objects and events in dynamic scenes, but also raises the possibility that by 24 months, infants' attention may also be shaped subtly by the culturally-inflected attentional proclivities characteristic of adults in their cultural communities. DNA barcoding seeks to assemble a standardized reference library for rapid and unambiguous identification of species, and can be used to screen for potentially cryptic species. The 5' region of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), which is a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene fragment, has been proposed as a universal marker for this purpose among animals. However, DNA barcoding of reptiles is still supported only by few datasets compared with other groups. We investigated the utilization of COI to discriminate 34 putative species of vipers, representing almost 92% of the recorded species in China. Based on a total of 241 sequences, our results indicated that the average degree of intraspecific variability (0.0198) tends to be one-sixth the average of interspecific divergence (0.0931), but no barcoding gap was detected between them. The threshold method, BLOG analyses and tree-based methods all can identify species with a high success rate. These results consistently suggested the usefulness and reliability of the DNA barcoding approach in Chinese vipers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To establish the reference range of the angle between ascending aorta and main pulmonary artery of fetus in the second and third trimester using spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC), and to investigate the value of this angle in prenatal screening of conotruncal defects (CTDs). Materials and Methods: Volume images of 311 normal fetuses along with 20 fetuses with congenital heart diseases were recruited in this cross-sectional study. An offline analysis of acquired volume datasets was carried out with multiplanar mode. The angle between aorta and pulmonary artery was measured by navigating the pivot point and rotating axes and the reference range was established. The images of ascending aorta and main pulmonary artery in fetuses with congenital heart diseases were observed by rotating the axes within the normal angle reference range. Results: The angle between ascending aorta and main pulmonary artery of the normal fetus (range: 59.1°~ 97.0°, mean ± SD: 78.0 ° ± 9.7°) was negatively correlated with gestational age (r = -0.52; p<0.01). By rotating the normal angle range corresponding to gestational age, the fetuses with CTD could not display views of their left ventricular long axis and main pulmonary trunk correctly. Conclusion: The left ventricular long axis and main pulmonary trunk views can be displayed using STIC so that the echocardiographic protocol of the cardiovascular joint could be standardized. The reference range of the angle between ascending aorta and main pulmonary artery is clinically useful in prenatal screening of CTD and provides a reliable quantitative standard to estimate the spatial relationship of the large arteries of fetus. Background: To investigate the attitudes of premarital couples towards the premarital screening program after the abolition of compulsory screening in China and to study the factors influencing participation. Methods: Between July 1st 2010 to August 31st 2010, 650 people who registered for marriage at the civil affairs bureau of Wuhan, Suizhou, Zaoyang in Hubei province were studied using questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to examine the factors influencing participation in the premarital screening program. Results: The premarital screening rate was 34.8% (95% Confidence Interval: 31.0% to 38.5%). Several demographic factors (age, residence, profession), awareness, knowledge, and attitudes towards premarital screening all had significant influence on participation in the premarital screening program. Conclusions: Promotion activities and health education to improve knowledge and attitudes to premarital screening will help increase the rate of voluntary premarital screening. The Tongshankou skarn deposit in the Edong ore district is a typical metasomatic deposit associated with adjacent granodiorite porphyry and carbonate rocks. Using comprehensive microscopic observations, mineralogical and geochemical analysis, scheelite grains in the skarns can be classified into three major types, showing multi-stage mineralization characteristics. In the redox fluid environment, scheelites that occur with garnets usually have affinity to garnets, while in later skarn phases others exist with oxides and sulfides. They can be subdivided by trace elements, such as Nb and Eu, to discuss the detailed ore-forming process. Scheelites have three typical substitution mechanisms including: 2Ca2 + ⇌ REE3 + +Na+ (1); Ca2 + + W6 + ⇌ REE3 + +Nb5+(2); and 3Ca2 + ⇌ 2REE3++ □Ca (□Ca = Ca site vacancy) (3). Plagioclase or various hydrothermal stages can cause Eu anomalies to fluctuate from positive to negative, and these processes can cause particular zonation in W and Mo contents in scheelites. Legionella pneumophila widely exists in natural and artificial water environments, which enables it to infect people. L. pneumophila infection causes Legionnaires’ disease (LD), which is a significant but relatively uncommon respiratory infection. Approximately 90% of LD is caused by L. pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lp1). Meteorological conditions may affect the infectivity and virulence of Lp1, but the exact relationship between them is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the virulence of Lp1 by screening of total 156 Lp1 strains isolated from cooling tower water in different regions of China by detecting their abilities to activate NF-kB signaling pathway in vitro. In addition, we screened the distribution of some selected virulence genes in these strains. The virulence, virulence gene distribution, and the meteorological factors were analyzed. We found that both the virulence and the distribution of virulence genes had a certain regional and meteorological correlation. Although the loss of several virulence genes showed significant effects on the virulence of Lp1 strains, the distribution of virulence genes had very limited effects on the virulence of Lp1. IMPORTANCE LD is likely to be underrecognized in many countries. Due to the widespread existence of L. pneumophila in natural and artificial water environments and to the lack of cross-protection against different strains, L. pneumophila is a potentially serious threat to human health. Therefore, effective monitoring of the virulence of L. pneumophila in the water environment is very important to prevent and control the prevalence of LD. Understanding the virulence of L. pneumophila can not only help us to predict the risk of possible outbreaks in advance but can also enable more targeted clinical treatment. This study highlights the importance of understanding the epidemiology and ecology of L. pneumophila isolated from public facilities in terms of public health and biology. Due to the potential for water sources to harbor and disseminate L. pneumophila and to the fact that geographical conditions influence the virulence of L. pneumophila, timely and accurate L. pneumophila virulence surveillance is urgently needed. Aim: To analyze the clinical characteristics and antibiotic resistance of Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MP) in Chinese patients, providing valuable information for the management of patients with MP., Methods: A total of 120 children who were hospitalized in The First Hospital of Huzhou between January and December 2016 for respiratory tract infection due to M. pneumoniae were enrolled in this study. Infection with M. pneumoniae was confirmed by ELISA for M. pneumoniae antibody, PCR, and throat culture. Antibiotic resistance was measured from the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antibiotics. The 23S rRNA gene of M. pneumoniae was also examined for mutations using DNA sequencing. Patients with MP were classified into antibiotic resistance (n = 98) and no resistance (n = 20) groups. For the 98 patients showing antibiotic resistance, they were further stratified into subgroups based on the antibiotics initially prescribed: azithromycin or erythromycin (n = 78) and cephalosporin or penicillin (n = 20). Clinical characteristics were compared between the patient groups., Results: Antibiotic resistance group presented significantly longer febrile days compared to the no resistance group (P = 0.007). The number of febrile days after macrolide treatment was also longer in antibiotic resistance group than in no resistance group (P = 0.042). MP patients initially treated with azithromycin or erythromycin showed a longer average duration of respiratory symptoms (P = 0.046) and had a fever for more days after macrolide treatment (P = 0.009) compared to those received cephalosporin or penicillin. The average white blood cell count of patients treated with azithromycin or erythromycin was nearly half of those treated with cephalosporin or penicillin (P < 0.001). Nearly 90% of the resistant M. pneumoniae strains showed A to G substitution at position 2063 of the 23S rRNA gene., Conclusion: The clinical characteristics and antibiotic resistance of MP were analyzed in 120 Chinese patients. Aims/introduction: To assess glycated albumin (GA) as a potential glycemic index in managing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)., Materials and Methods: Eligible pregnant women were divided into the GDM group with abnormal result on a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the control (normal) group. GA measurements, Pearson's correlation analysis, multiple logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were obtained at the follow-up examination of participants in the two groups., Results: A total of 2,118 women were assigned to the GDM group (n = 639) and control group (n = 1,479). The mean level of serum GA in GDM group was significantly greater than that in the control group at both 24-28 and 36-38 weeks of gestation (P < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for GA defining good glycemic control in GDM was 0.874 (95% confidence interval 0.811-0.938). The cut-off point for the GA levels derived from the receiver operating characteristic curve was 11.60%, which had sensitivity and specificity for detecting a poor glycemic status of 75.93% and 86.36%, respectively. The risk of birthweight ≥3,500 g and macrosomia increased significantly with GA levels ≥13.00% at 24-28 weeks and ≥12.00% at 36-38 weeks of gestation., Conclusions: GA might be an appropriate and conveniently measured index that can detect poor glycemic control and predict birthweights in GDM women.

Aim: To assess associations of the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D with insulin resistance and β-cell function in a healthy Chinese female population., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1382 female participants free of type 2 diabetes who were recruited in Shanghai. Blood samples were collected within a winter season and the serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, fasting plasma glucose and insulin, and other biochemical parameters were determined. Insulin resistance and β-cell function were assessed using the homeostasis model assessments of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-B), respectively., Results: Multiple linear regression analyses adjusted for age, parathyroid hormone, Ca(2+) and BMI revealed that independent inverse associations existed between the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and HOMA-IR (P<0.001) and between the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and HOMA-B (P=0.001)., Conclusion: Serum vitamin D level is significantly and independently associated with insulin resistance and β-cell function in a healthy Chinese female population.

Objective: To evaluate the application value and feasibility of various cervical screening methods and to explore a rapid and efficient cervical cancer screening program for the women in the rural areas of China., Methods: We sequentially conducted human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA test by hybrid capture-2 (hc2) with cervical cells, liquid-based thinprep cytology test (TCT), visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), visual inspection with iodine (VILI), colposcopy respectively for the 2499 married women between 30 and 49 years from Xiushui county of Jiangxi province. All the detection methods were performed independently under double-blind design. Women who were diagnosed positive for having any VIA,VILI and colposcopy inspection or for those women who were diagnosed negative for VIA, VILI and colposcopy but with positive result of HPV or TCT test underwent cervical biopsy directly and endocervical curettage (ECC)when necessary. We performed cervical biopsy endocervical curettage within two weeks to observe the sensitive (SE), specificity (SP), negative predict value (NPV) and positive predict value (PPV) of these detection methods when used alone or combined each other, including HPV test, TCT inspection, VIA, VILI, and colposcopy, the pathological diagnosises of cervical tissue were confirmed by IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) while the cytological findings were underegone through the updated program of TBS (The Bethesda System) in 2001., Results: A total of 2499 women underwent the screening and found 443 women who were diagnosed as HPV positive, 337 women with abnormal cervical cytology and 27 women with ASC-H, 157 cases with ASCUS; 103 cases with HSIL, 49 cases with LSIL and 1 cervical cancer. According to the pathological findings. There were 181 women diagnosed as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical cancer, including 81 cases with CIN1 37 cases with CIN2,60 case cervical cancer. The sensitivity rates of HPV, TCT, HPV+ TCT, VIA, VILI, VIA+VILI and colposcopy were 96.67%, 89.47%, 97.98%, 56.57%, 36.36%, 63.64% and 39.39%, and the specificity rates were 85.00%, 96.91%, 86.97%, 94.60%, 96.23%, 92.97% and 98.14% respectively., Conclusion: HPV + TCT seemed to be more sensitive than other screening methods in the cervical cancer screening program.
