Virus-caused public health outbreaks represent a serious threat to humans all over the world. The rampant new 2019 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has wreaked havoc on China and the rest of the world since December 2019. Now focus is on effective reduction of corona and other viral and bacterial infections in hospitals, public and private sectors, households, schools, etc. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, heterostructures, patterned surfaces, and graphene-based materials have shown up to 99.9998% efficacy against bacteria, mold, and viruses. The stability, long shelf life, and robustness of inorganic nanoparticles make them desirable for antimicrobial nanofinishes. These inorganic antimicrobial agents are more stable than organic antibacterial compounds at high temperature and pressure. The high specific surface area-to-volume ratios and unique physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles are largely responsible for their antibacterial actions. But their immobilization is a huge challenge. To address this issue, NPs were modified with (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTS) and applied on cotton fabric. The silane part of GPTS reacted with the NPs under acidic conditions while epoxy reacted with cotton under alkaline conditions. Experiments: Through deposition of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) by chemical reduction on the surface of monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres, micron-sized PS@Ag-NPs core–shell microspheres were prepared with excellent SERS activity. After that, two simple protocols (Method I and Method II) were explored for the determination of thiram on apple epidermis. Findings: Based on our developed strategy of the single microsphere SERS technique, we successfully fabricated uniform PS@Ag-NPs substrate with high SERS activity and excellent detection sensitivity. With rapid advances in nanotechnology and nanomaterials, metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have become widely used in many different products and industrial processes. Water is an important medium in the transfer and fate of MNPs. Accordingly, the potential for the inadvertent and incidental release of MNPs into aquatic environments through direct release and waste disposal has increased considerably in China in recent years. Environmental health and human safety are two of the greatest challenges facing the expanding nanomaterial field. However, existing knowledge on MNP toxicity is currently insufficient to carry out a comprehensive risk assessment due to a general lack of data related to the environmental distribution of MNPs within aquatic environments. This study provides a summary of MNP production and consumption trends in China by means of statistical changes in MNP discharge and deposition between 2000 and 2010. China was used as a model for aquatic environmental risks associated with MNP consumption and production. MNP pollution of aquatic environments is discussed as well as the challenges that China will face in the future with increasing nanomaterial consumption and pollution. The study concludes with a discussion on managing MNP exposure of aquatic environments in China and its subsequent risks, if any, which may require greater attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Nanoparticles in groundwater were investigated using TEM. • Nanoparticles with different contents of ore-forming elements can be grouped into three main types. • A relationship between metal-bearing nanoparticles and concealed orebodies was demonstrated. • Classification of ore-related nanoparticles was important for the detection of mineralization information. The characterization of nanoparticles in groundwater is recognized as an important tool that can be applied to mineral exploration. In this paper, we investigate the concealed orebodies of the Qujia gold deposit in the Jiaojia orefield of eastern China by analyzing ore-related nanoparticles in groundwater using transmission electron microscopy. The nanoparticles contain variable amounts of ore-related elements (e.g., Ag, Cu, Zn, La, Ce, Pb, Pt, and S). Some of these elements are rarely found in natural settings unrelated to orebodies or mineral extraction, but are strongly linked to concealed orebodies in the study area. These nanoparticles, which are diverse in their shapes, aggregated features, and degrees of crystallinity, can be grouped in terms of composition as: (i) native metal nanoparticles, (ii) metal-based nanoparticles, and (iii) carrier nanoparticles associated with trace elements. We propose that these three main types of nanoparticles enable the efficient transport of ore-forming elements in groundwater. The results of this study provide insights into the migratory behaviour of ore-related nanoparticles in groundwater, and our methods could be applied for detecting deep-seated mineral deposits.
