Oracle bone inscriptions (OBIs) are ancient Chinese scripts originated in the Shang Dynasty of China, and now less than half of the existing OBIs are well deciphered. To date, interpreting OBIs mainly relies on professional historians using the rules of OBIs evolution, and the remaining part of the oracle's deciphering work is stuck in a bottleneck period. Here, we systematically analyze the evolution process of oracle characters by using the Siamese network in Few-shot learning (FSL). We first establish a dataset containing Chinese characters which have finished a relatively complete evolution, including images in five periods: oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, seal inscriptions, official script, and regular script. Then, we compare the performance of three typical algorithms, VGG16, ResNet, and AlexNet respectively, as the backbone feature extraction network of the Siamese network. The results show that the highest F1 value of 83.3% and the highest recognition accuracy of 82.67% are obtained by the combination of VGG16 and Siamese network. Based on the analysis, the typical structural performance of each period is evaluated and we identified that the optimized Siamese network is feasible to study the evolution of the OBIs. The effect of cyanobacterial blooms on aquatic ecosystems has received wide attention, yet little is known about their impacts on zooplankton genetic structure.For 26 months (April 2012–May 2014), we monitored zooplankton in a warm‐temperate ice‐free lake in Eastern China, with an emphasis on seasonal population dynamics of the cladoceran, Daphnia galeata. There was a seasonal succession in the zooplanktonic community (composed of Cladocera, Copepoda, and Rotifera).Genetic analysis (based on 14 microsatellite loci) of the 21 monthly samples in which D. galeata was present demonstrated that several clones could successfully overwinter and/or persist for many months. However, all clones, including these long‐lived clones, were completely replaced by new ones after October 2013, probably due to cyanobacteria blooms in that summer. A high clonal richness coupled with high turnover rate was observed in the D. galeata population overall, suggesting frequent sexual reproduction.Daphnia galeata experimentally fed with a diet of Microcystis aeruginosa (the most abundant toxic cyanobacterial species in the lake) had a substantially reduced survivorship, consistent with the field observations.Our findings highlight the changes of zooplanktonic population dynamics in terms of both community and clonal structure in a warm‐temperate ice‐free lake, and call for further investigation on ecological responses of zooplankton to cyanobacterial blooms. Training animals to pull agricultural equipment and wheeled transport significantly shaped and advanced human economic systems. In this context the use of large domestic animals such as cattle was a milestone event in human history, part of what Sherratt memorably termed the Secondary Products Revolution: the use of the products of live animals such as milk, wool and traction power. It is commonly assumed that male cattle were generally preferred for traction because of their greater strength compared with females, and the importance of the latter for breeding and, in some societies, for milk and for dairy products, but surprisingly little is known of this aspect of the Secondary Products Revolution in prehistoric China. Here we apply established morphometric models to 10 assemblages of cattle bones from Chinese Bronze Age (ca. 2000–221 BCE) contexts. Our results indicate a process of intensified cattle labour exploitation at this time and, intriguingly, we also observe the earliest labour employment of female cattle during the Late Shang dynasty (ca. 1300–1046 BCE). It is proposed that female cattle may have been required for traction because of the large numbers of male cattle, especially bulls, that were sent for ritual sacrifice. Very few studies have focused on the biogeography and genetic diversity of aquatic invertebrate zooplankton from the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau, an important biogeographic hotspot. The geological uplift of this region created special environments requiring adaptive genetic diversification of the resident lineages. Here, we developed and used the first set of high‐resolution microsatellite markers for the Daphnia similis species complex. We screened this species in 23 (out of 303) lakes across China, covering a large geographical and ecological range of habitats. High population clonal diversity of the D. similis species complex was found, regardless of their geographical origin. However, four Tibetan Daphnia sinensis populations showed substantially lower clonal diversity. Interestingly, D. sinensis populations from two regions, Eastern China and the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau of Western China, were found to be clearly differentiated from each other. Lakes inhabited by Western D. sinensis were of a lower trophic level, higher altitude, and more likely to freeze in the winter. This study contributes to an understanding of adaptation to their special environments by the freshwater invertebrates in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: A conceptual model of aerosol-cloud interaction is first built to explain the aerosol effect on Mei-Yu frontal precipitation, with possible application to reducing the significant uncertainties in weather and climate prediction. The Mei-Yu front is a significantly important summer precipitation system in eastern Asia. In recent years, anthropogenic air pollution over the Yangtze-Huaihe region of China has been aggravating continuously. A cloud-resolving model coupled with an idealized frontal model is used to investigate the response of aerosols on the Mei-Yu frontal precipitation. The results indicate that increasing droplet concentrations lead to significant precipitation enhancement with the current pollution levels in Mei-Yu frontal system. Under the polluted conditions, the enhanced cold-cloud process is of great importance. Moreover, with the "towing" of active cold-cloud process, cold-cloud and warm-cloud processes developed mutually. These account for the complicated and special microphysical mechanism for aerosol impacts on Mei-Yu frontal system. Furthermore, two types of "microphysical-dynamic positive feedback loop" caused by the interactions of various physical processes and effects (direct dynamic effect, frontogenesis effect, and vapor pump effect) can be found in the Mei-Yu precipitation, which in turn reinforce the microphysical processes. The combined effect is to increase Mei-Yu front precipitation. The interaction of microphysical processes and dynamic processes, and the positive feedback loops they create are the main physical mechanisms behind the significant impacts of aerosol on Mei-Yu frontal precipitation. Abstract The distribution and genetic diversity of freshwater zooplankton is understudied in the Eastern Palearctic. Here, we explored the lineage diversity and regional distribution of the genus Moina in China. Members of this genus are often keystone components of freshwater ecosystems and have been frequently subjected to toxicological and physiological studies. Four species of Moina were identified, based on morphology, in 50 of 113 Chinese water bodies examined, and their phylogenetic position was analyzed using both a mitochondrial (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I; COI) and a nuclear marker (the nuclear internal transcribed spacer; ITS-1). Both molecular markers identified four clades corresponding broadly to the morphological species. Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed the presence of four species complexes with eleven lineages across China, five of which were new. However, some lineages (and even individual haplotypes) were widespread in Eurasia, suggesting an ability to disperse over long distances. In contrast, a few lineages exhibited restricted distributions. The nuclear phylogeny also recognized four species of Moina within China and seven very distinct clades. Interestingly, one specimen possessing Moina cf. micrura mtDNA had ITS-1 alleles of the M. cf. brachiata clade. This discordance between mtDNA and nuclear ITS-1 phylogenies is indicative of interspecific introgression and hybridization. Additionally, our COI phylogeny showed apparent paraphyly in two Moina species groups, suggesting introgression of their mitochondrial genomes. The idea that hybridization promotes range expansion has received recent attention, but support from field studies is limited. We hypothesized that in the cladoceran waterflea genus Daphnia, parental species are geographically and ecologically separated, whereas hybrids occupy intermediate or occasionally extreme environments, potentially facilitating range expansion of parental species. We assessed the distribution of Daphnia dentifera, Daphnia galeata and their interspecific hybrids across 44 lakes in China (using mitochondrial and microsatellite markers), and related it to geographical and environmental lake descriptors. Parental species were geographically separated: D. dentifera occurred in western and central China, and D. galeata in eastern and central China, whereas hybrids were found in the western and central parts of the country. However, after controlling for geographical differences, the effect of environment on species distribution was strong and significant. Specifically, D. dentifera was present in high‐altitude oligotrophic lakes, D. galeata in low‐altitude eutrophic lakes and hybrids at intermediate to high altitudes, mainly in mesotrophic lakes. Microsatellite data indicated that hybrids were locally produced rather than having migrated from elsewhere; they probably resulted from encounters between expanding D. galeata and resident D. dentifera. The present study provides evidence that hybrids can survive in habitats that are otherwise suitable for only one of their parental species, emphasizing the importance of hybridization in expansion of species gene pools. Abstract Recent studies of the distribution and diversity of freshwater zooplankton have indicated that the previously understudied Eastern Palearctic region is an important biogeographic hotspot. Here, we explored the lineage diversity and reproductive modes of the Daphnia pulex species group across China. Members of this group are often keystone species of standing water bodies and are frequently used as a model system for ecological, evolutionary and, more recently, genomic studies. We found members of the D. pulex group in seven of seventy-six Chinese water bodies examined. We analyzed their phylogenetic position using mitochondrial markers, and explored the genetic structure of six populations using microsatellite markers. Mitochondrial DNA analysis suggested the presence of two distinct species complexes in China: the D. pulex complex that has a global distribution, and an apparently endemic Eastern Palearctic D. mitsukuri complex. Microsatellite analyses of six populations suggested that three of these reproduced by cyclical parthenogenesis, as evidenced by high clonal diversity and the absence of deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. In contrast, three other populations showed remarkably low diversity of multilocus genotypes. This suggests an obligate parthenogenetic reproductive mode, which was confirmed in one of the populations by comparison of genotypes of Daphnia adults and dormant embryos. All presumably obligate parthenogenetic clones were heterozygous at the majority of microsatellite loci, suggesting their hybrid origin. This was further supported by analyses of a small GTPase nuclear gene (rab4), as two alleles within single individuals belonged to different clades. Interestingly, one putatively obligate parthenogenetic clone carried three distinct alleles suggesting higher ploidy and potential gene flow between the D. pulicaria and D. mitsukuri complexes. Cladocerans of the Daphnia longispina complex are often the key components of pelagic food webs in northern temperate lakes and ponds. In the present study, we aimed to fill the gap in knowledge on the biogeography and diversity of this species complex, through analysis (by sequencing two mitochondrial genes) of the taxonomic structure of 18 lake populations across China, covering a large geographical and ecological range. Based on the patterns observed in the Western Palaearctic and Japan, we hypothesized that several species of the D. longispina complex should coexist and that some cryptic lineages are present in China. In the lakes studied, however, we detected haplotypes of only two species (D. galeata and D. dentifera). Daphnia galeata was detected in eutrophic lakes at lower altitudes (in central and eastern China), whereas D. dentifera was found in high-altitude oligotrophic lakes of the Tibetan Plateau in western China. The two lineages coexisted in only one of the lakes studied, in Tibet. The variation in mitochondrial DNA differed between the two species. Daphnia dentifera haplotypes were lake specific, while D. galeata haplotypes were often shared across lakes and geographic regions, indicating a recent rapid expansion of the latter species. ABSTRACT In this paper, we report results of the pilot study in which we apply skeletochronological analysis of teeth to a collection of modern Chinese wild boar ( Sus scrofa) of known age and date of death. This is the first time that odontochronology has been applied to suids in China. This work allowed us to establish parameters for subsequent analysis of a limited number of Neolithic-aged Sus (wild boar and possible early domesticated pig) samples from Henan Province. The goal of the research is to contribute to the ongoing reconstruction of Neolithic dietary, health and economic patterns along the Yellow River. Our results are encouraging in that regular seasonal growth patterning is observed in the northern control sample, which is from the same region as our archaeological investigation. Abstract: The δ18O values of marine benthic foraminifera indicate a long-term cooling through the middle and late Eocene around the globe. During the same time period, the India–Asia plate collision and the Pacific–Asia plate convergence must have significantly affected East Asia, especially East China. In this context, the evolving pattern of vegetation in East Asia and its controlling factor remains uncertain. In this study, 19 published Paleogene pollen records with independent age control in China were compiled and analyzed. The results indicate that the tropical and subtropical taxa and their percentages increased from the Late Paleocene to the Early Eocene, implying a warming trend in East Asia. From the Middle to the Late Eocene, the tropical and subtropical taxa and their percentages decreased continuously, showing a stepwise cooling. The most dramatic changes in vegetation occurred from the Late Eocene to the Early Oligocene in China, which is characterized by universal increase in coniferous pollen. This evolution trend of palynoflora in China appears well consistent with the δ18O curve of marine benthic foraminifera, revealing that global climate made a major contribution to changes in East-Asian vegetation during the Paleogene. It is noteworthy that from the Late Paleocene to the Early Oligocene East China was always wetter than West China so that broadleaf trees could bloom and develop continuously in East China. Influenced by the India–Asia plate collision and the Pacific–Asia plate convergence, the extensional basins in East China developed significantly during the Paleogene, and provided favorable locations and adequate moisture for the continuous development of broadleaf trees in East China. Abstract: Over the past decade, palynoflora investigation of Palaeogene and Neogene red beds and Pleistocene loess has been the focus of an increasing number of studies. Pollen extraction from sediments is a prerequisite for palynoflora investigation. This study explored a new pollen processing method and successfully extracted a large number of pollen grains from the Palaeogene red beds in the Liguanqiao Basin, Hubei Province and the Pleistocene loess from the southern Chinese Loess Plateau. There are several key steps in this new method. (1) Samples from arid to semi-arid regions are usually well cemented and should be gently crushed and sieved with 30-mesh screen for pollen analysis to maximize the number of pollen grains recovered from sediments. (2) In order to remove organic matter most effectively, samples should be heated until just boiling in ∼3% NaOH solution for not more than 5 min (3) The residue after acid–alkali treatment should be dried at 85 °C for 7–9 h to ensure that density of the heavy liquid is not diluted during the next step. (4) KI heavy liquid, with a density of 1.74–1.76, should be used to concentrate the pollen. (5) Sieving with a 7-μm stainless steel mesh resulted in the loss of few pollen grains. In contrast, sieving with a 10-μm nylon mesh resulted in loss of many small pollen grains. Importantly, this study extended the first appearance of Artemisia in China back to the Late Palaeocene, and is significant for vegetation reconstruction in the arid to semi-arid regions during the Cenozoic Era. Abstract: A newly discovered Paleolithic site in loess deposits in the Lushi Basin, South Luo River, central China, is dated using pedostratigraphic analysis, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and magnetostratigraphic analysis. This region is regarded as an important place for hominin occupation and settlement during the early to middle Pleistocene. Results indicate that the archaeological site dates from 600ka to 620ka, reinforcing the view that Homo erectus had occupied a large area of eastern Asia by 620ka. The lithic assemblages of Lushi Basin is a flake and core technology, typical for this time period in north-central China. It may be compared with that at the Zhoukoudian locality 1 in north China and some sites in the Luonan Basin, and provides important data for understanding the behavior and stone tool technology of early Chinese hominins. Abstract: The vegetation on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is highly sensitive to climatic changes and thus represents a potentially interesting environmental archive. Pollen samples from the Fanjiaping Loess section in Lanzhou on the western Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) were analyzed in conjunction with OSL dating. The results indicate that pollen zone B (60.6–46.0 ka, correlative to the early MIS 3) had the greatest abundances of Cupressaceae, Tsuga, Gramineae and Cyperaceae of the entire section, suggesting a warm phase during the last glacial period. These pollen taxa decreased significantly in abundance in the zones C (46.0–39.0 ka) and D (39.0–27.0 ka), reflecting a substantial climate cooling from the middle MIS 3 to MIS 2. These results correlate with climate records from the South China Sea, the CLP, Baikal Lake, North America, North Atlantic Ocean and other regions, and probably correspond with the decline of northern high-latitude insolation and the increase of global ice volume from 50 to 20 ka. In particular, arboreal pollen, fern spore and algae abundances declined sharply since ∼40 ka, while shrub and herb pollen reached the highest abundances. Conifer pollen Picea and Abies abundance also rose markedly and increased up the section. This implies significant climate deterioration and likely corresponded with substantial growth of the polar ice sheets since ∼40 ka. The decreasing temperature caused by an insolation decline during the last glacial period probably reinforced the cooling effect in a ‘snow/ice/albedo’ feedback, which would result in less climate sensitivity to radiative forcing. Meanwhile, vegetation decline in the Northern Hemisphere during the last glacial period and tundra development at high latitudes possibly caused additional cooling, enhancing the growth of polar ice sheets since 40 ka. The development of polar ice sheets increased the polar-to-equator temperature and pressure gradients, strengthening the westerlies and supplying plenty of moisture to Northwest China during 40–30 ka. Lake sediments developed widely on the Tibetan Plateau during 40–30 ka, probably related to an increase in the seasonality of middle-to-low latitude insolation which caused an enhancement of glacier melting on the Plateau. Abstract: Intense tectonic movement occurred along the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau 3–4Ma. During the same time period, global climate changed from a period of stability to a period of frequent and abrupt changes, which prevented fluvial and glacial systems from establishing a state of equilibrium. Thus, it is difficult to directly attribute the 3–4Ma coarse-grained sediment accumulation in East Asia to climate change or tectonic activity. This study compares Late Cenozoic multi-proxy records from the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) to the low-latitude grain size, sea level and benthic δ 18O records from the South China Sea (SCS) and the high latitude grain-size record from Lake Baikal. All records suggest a steady and persistent cooling since ~4Ma, which correlates well with those cooling records from other regions around the world. This coincided in timing with the modeling results that the closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS) initiated strengthening of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation between 4.8 and 4.0Ma which led to both warming of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and cooling of the Southern Hemisphere (SH). Cooling of the SH would induce a marked development of the Antarctic ice sheets at ~4Ma, pushing the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) northward. This was superimposed on warming of the NH and brought more precipitation to the middle latitudes of the NH, resulting in increases in coarse-grained sediments in the Sikouzi section from the western CLP since 4.2Ma. Notably, the absence of coarse-grained sedimentation in the Sikouzi section during 3.0-2.1Ma and the gradual decrease in coarse-grained peaks since 2.1Ma reflected by the Sikouzi grain-size record probably resulted from stepwise increase in the NH ice volume pushing the ITCZ southward. On the other hand, development of the Antarctic ice sheets would induce global cooling and enhancement of physical weathering, initiating increases in sedimentation rates as well as increases in grain size from Lake Baikal to the CLP to the SCS. Therefore the closure of the CAS during 4.8–4.0Ma and its influence on ocean heat transport was possibly the major forcing factor for global cooling since 4Ma. A persistent and steady cooling during 4–3Ma probably made a significant contribution to the establishment of the NH ice sheets at 2.75Ma ago. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Domestic horses played a pivotal role in ancient China, but their exact origin remains controversial. To investigate the origin of Chinese domestic horses, we analyzed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 35 horse remains, aged between 4000 and 2000 years, excavated from nine archaeological sites in northern China. The Chinese ancient horses exhibited high matrilineal diversity, falling into all the seven haplogroups (A–G) observed in modern horses. These results suggest that several maternal lines were introduced into the gene pool of Chinese horses in the past. Haplogroups A and F were more prevalent in ancient horses than the other haplogroups. Interestingly, only haplogroups A and F were present in the samples older than 4000 years, while the more recent horses (between 2000 and 3000 years BP) fell into all seven haplogroups. Comparison with DNA data of present-day horses suggests that haplogroup F is like to be an ancient haplogroup of East Asian origin. These analyses also suggest that the origin of Chinese domestic horses is complex, and external mtDNA input occurred after initial domestication. Our results indicate that the Chinese ancient horses are more related to the modern Mongolian horses. Lastly, our results cannot support the previous hypothesis that early Chinese domestic horses were derived from the Przewalski horse. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Micro-botanical and fungal remains on Xipo vessels suggested alcoholic beverages. • The beverages were cereal-based (rice, millet), and mainly saccharified by Monascus. • Providing large amounts of alcoholic drinks with large vats might be a costly signal. • Competitive feasting emerged in the late middle Yangshao period. • The phenomena accompanied the intensified inter-regional interactions at the time. In this paper, we focus on a Neolithic Yangshao culture community with emergent social hierarchy associated with feasting activities. We analyzed the microfossil remains (micro-botanical and fungi) on 15 vessels excavated from the cemetery section of the Xipo site in northern China, highlighting four dakougang large vats with non-local characteristics from the two largest elite tombs (ca. 3300–2900 cal BC). The results revealed hongqujiu red beer, and the brewing method was likely using red mold Monascus as the main saccharification agent in a semi-solid-state fermentation condition, which is unprecedented in Yangshao cultural assemblages based on current data. This brewing method likely originated in the eastern coastal regions and may have been introduced to Xipo as an exotic and prestigious item. Large quantities of red beer and elite ceramics may have been used to advertise elite's social status in competitive feasts. Such feasts may have been not only conducted by the living elites as a power competition, but also expected to be carried out by their deceased ancestors in the afterlife. China pledges to reach a peak in CO 2 emissions by 2030 and to make its best efforts to reach this peak earlier. Previous studies have paid much attention to the total amount of China's CO 2 emissions, but usually only one dataset is used in each evaluation. The pledged national reduction target is administratively divided into provincial targets. Accurate interpretation of province-level carbon emissions is essential for making policies and achieving the reduction target. However, the spatiotemporal pattern of provincial emissions and the associated uncertainty are still poorly understood. Thus, an assessment of province-level CO 2 emissions considering local statistical data and emission factors is urgently needed. Here, we collected and analyzed 7 published emission datasets to comprehensively evaluate the spatiotemporal distribution of provincial CO 2 emissions. We found that the provincial emissions ranged from 20 to 649 Mt CO 2 and that the standard deviations (SDs) ranged from 8 to 159 Mt. Furthermore, the emissions estimated from provincial-data-based inventories were more consistent than those from the spatial disaggregation of national energy statistics, with mean SDs of 26 and 65 Mt CO 2 in 2012, respectively. Temporally, emissions in most provinces increased from 2000 to approximately 2012 and leveled off afterwards. The interannual variation in provincial CO 2 emissions was captured by provincial-data-based inventories but generally missed by national-data-based inventories. When compared with referenced inventories, the discrepancy for provincial estimates could reach −57%–162% for national-data-based inventories but were less than 45% for provincial-data-based inventories. Using comprehensive data sets, the range presented here incorporated more factors and showed potential systematic biases. Our results indicate that it is more suitable to use provincial inventories when making policies for subnational CO 2 reductions or when performing atmospheric CO 2 simulations. To reduce uncertainties in provincial emission estimates, we suggest the use of local optimized coal emission factors and validations of inventories by direct measurement data and remote sensing results. • Estimates from provincial statistics were more consistent than the national ones. • The interannual variations were well-captured by provincial-data-based datasets. • The provincial-based estimates help to allocate duties and set reduction targets. The Yellow River Delta played a vital role in the development of the Neolithic civilization of China. However, the population history of this region from the Neolithic transitions to the present remains poorly understood due to the lack of ancient human genomes. This especially holds for key Neolithic transitions and tumultuous turnovers of dynastic history. Here, we report genome-wide data from 69 individuals dating to 5,410-1,345 years before present (BP) at 0.008 to 2.49× coverages, along with 325 present-day individuals collected from 16 cities across Shandong. During the Middle to Late Dawenkou period, we observed a significant influx of ancestry from Neolithic Yellow River farmers in central China and some southern Chinese ancestry that mixed with local hunter-gatherers in Shandong. The genetic heritage of the Shandong Longshan people was found to be most closely linked to the Dawenkou culture. During the Shang to Zhou Dynasties, there was evidence of genetic admixture of local Longshan populations with migrants from the Central Plain. After the Qin to Han Dynasties, the genetic composition of the region began to resemble that of modern Shandong populations. Our genetic findings suggest that the middle Yellow River Basin farmers played a role in shaping the genetic affinity of neighboring populations in northern China during the Middle to Late Neolithic period. Background: This study aimed to explore the potential risk factors of platinum allergy and follow-up treatment to provide a reference for the clinical prevention and treatment of platinum allergic reactions in patients with gynecological tumors., Methods: The study retrospectively analyzed 45 cases of platinum allergic reactions that occurred in Shengjing Hospital affiliated to China Medical University from August 2010 to July 2016. Analysis of risk factors included the cumulative dose, treatment course and time intervals., Results: The cumulative carboplatin dose in allergic patients ranged from 900 to 10250 mg (average 4845 mg). The 45 allergic reactions occurred between the 3rd and 25th course of treatment (average 11.4 courses). The average re-treatment interval of carboplatin-allergic patients was 28.1 months, including 93.3% of patients with platinum re-treatment interval of more than 1 year. The allergic reaction occurred in the 2nd or 3rd course of re-treatment in 26 patients, accounting for 70.3% of all patients with recurrence. Seventeen patients were subjected to desensitization therapy, among which 13 cases were well tolerated., Conclusions: Patients who received more than 8 courses of carboplatin or a cumulative dose of more than 3500 mg were the high-risk population for platinum allergy. The 2nd and 3rd treatment course after restarting carboplatin treatment after an interval time of more than 1 year was the high incident period of carboplatin allergy. Skin tests should be conducted in patients with high risk of carboplatin allergy. In cases of carboplatin allergy, patients could receive carboplatin or oxaliplatin desensitization therapy.

Two waterworks, with source water derived from the Huangpu or Yangtze River in Shanghai, were investigated, and the effluents were plate-screened for antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) using five antibiotics: ampicillin (AMP), kanamycin (KAN), rifampicin (RFP), chloramphenicol (CM) and streptomycin (STR). The influence of water treatment procedures on the bacterial antibiotic resistance rate and the changes that bacteria underwent when exposed to the five antibiotics at concentration levels ranging from 1 to 100 μg/mL were studied. Multi-drug resistance was also analyzed using drug sensitivity tests. The results indicated that bacteria derived from water treatment plant effluent that used the Huangpu River rather than the Yangtze River as source water exhibited higher antibiotic resistance rates against AMP, STR, RFP and CM but lower antibiotic resistance rates against KAN. When the antibiotic concentration levels ranged from 1 to 10 μg/mL, the antibiotic resistance rates of the bacteria in the water increased as water treatment progressed. Biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration played a key role in increasing the antibiotic resistance rate of bacteria. Chloramine disinfection can enhance antibiotic resistance. Among the isolated ARB, 75% were resistant to multiple antibiotics. This study presents the first examination of the genetic structure of Daphnia longispina complex populations in Eastern China. Only one species, D. galeata, was present across the eight investigated lakes; as identified by taxon assignment using allelic variation at 15 microsatellite loci. Three genetically differentiated D. galeata subgroups emerged independent of the type of statistical analysis applied. Thus, Bayesian clustering, discriminant analysis based on results from factorial correspondence analysis, and UPGMA clustering consistently showed that populations from two neighbouring lakes were genetically separated from a mixture of genotypes found in other lakes, which formed another two subgroups. Clonal diversity was high in all D. galeata populations, and most samples showed no deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, indicating that clonal selection had little effect on the genetic diversity. Overall, populations did not cluster by geographical origin. Further studies will show if the observed pattern can be explained by natural colonization processes or by recent anthropogenic impact on predominantly artificial lakes.
