The benefits and long-term effects of extracurricular scientific research on undergraduate students in many countries have been intensively investigated, but it remains obscure for Chinese medical students. In this study, we investigated the outcome of 60 medical students who have participated in extracurricular scientific research at Jinan University Medical School over a period of 7 years (2011-2018). The results revealed that these students have contributed to 31 biomedical science articles in reputable academic journals, as first- or co-authors. Furthermore, they also independently procured various funding based on their research achievements, and smaller awards for achievements in conferences and competitions. Assessment of the grade point average score of these students revealed that conducting extracurricular scientific research did not affect their routine medical study and exam grades (P>0.05). The students benefited from participating in extracurricular research, by acquiring the ability to think scientifically and enhancing their communication skills. In addition, the medical students were motivated to enlist for postgraduate studies so that they could further embark in scientific research. In sum, Chinese medical students are capable of participating in scientific research and make a significant contribution to science.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor originating in the nasopharyngeal epithelium with a high incidence in southern China and parts of Southeast Asia. The current treatment methods are mainly radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, they often have side effects and are not suitable for long‐term exposure. Natural products have received more and more attention in cancer prevention and treatment because of their its high efficiency, low toxic side effects, and low toxicity. Natural products can serve as a viable alternative, and this study aimed to review the efficacy and mechanisms of natural products in the treatment of NPC by examining previous literature. Most natural products act by inhibiting cell proliferation, metastasis, inducing cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. Objective: To study the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of the polysaccharide of Alocasia cucullata (PAC) and the underlying mechanism. Methods: B16F10 and 4T1 cells were cultured with PAC of 40 µg/mL, and PAC was withdrawn after 40 days of administration. The cell viability was detected by cell counting kit-8. The expression of Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 proteins were detected by Western blot and the expressions of ERK1/2 mRNA were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). A mouse melanoma model was established to study the effect of PAC during long-time administration. Mice were divided into 3 treatment groups: control group treated with saline water, positive control group (LNT group) treated with lentinan at 100 mg/(kg·d), and PAC group treated with PAC at 120 mg/(kg·d). The pathological changes of tumor tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. The apoptosis of tumor tissues was detected by TUNEL staining. Bcl-2 and Caspase-3 protein expressions were detected by immunohistochemistry, and the expressions of ERK1/2, JNK1 and p38 mRNA were detected by qRT-PCR. Results: In vitro, no strong inhibitory effects of PAC were found in various tumor cells after 48 or 72 h of administration. Interestingly however, after 40 days of cultivation under PAC, an inhibitory effect on B16F10 cells was found. Correspondingly, the long-time administration of PAC led to downregulation of Bcl-2 protein (P<0.05), up-regulation of Caspase-3 protein (P<0.05) and ERK1 mRNA (P<0.05) in B16F10 cells. The above results were verified by in vivo experiments. In addition, viability of B16F10 cells under long-time administration culture in vitro decreased after drug withdrawal, and similar results were also observed in 4T1 cells. Conclusions: Long-time administration of PAC can significantly inhibit viability and promote apoptosis of tumor cells, and had obvious antitumor effect in tumor-bearing mice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Isoprothiolane (IPT) resistance has emerged in Magnaporthe oryzae, due to the long-term usage of IPT to control rice blast in China, yet the mechanisms of the resistance remain largely unknown. Through IPT adaptation on PDA medium, we obtained a variety of IPT-resistant mutants. Based on their EC50 values to IPT, the resistant mutants were mainly divided into three distinct categories, i.e., low resistance (LR, 6.5 ≤ EC50 < 13.0 μg/mL), moderate resistance 1 (MR-1, 13.0 ≤ EC50 < 25.0 μg/mL), and moderate resistance 2 (MR-2, 25.0 ≤ EC50 < 35.0 μg/mL). Molecular analysis of MoIRR (Magnaporthe oryzae isoprothiolane resistance related) gene demonstrated that it was associated only with the moderate resistance in MR-2 mutants, indicating that other mechanisms were associated with resistance in LR and MR-1 mutants. In this study, we mainly focused on the characterization of low resistance to IPT in M. oryzae. Mycelial growth and conidial germination were significantly reduced, indicating fitness penalties in LR mutants. Based on the differences of whole genome sequences between parental isolate and LR mutants, we identified a conserved MoVelB gene, encoding the velvet family transcription factor, and genetic transformation of wild type isolate verified that MoVelB gene was associated with the low resistance. Based on molecular analysis, we further demonstrated that the velvet family proteins VelB and VeA were indispensable for IPT toxicity and the deformation of the VelB-VeA-LaeA complex played a vital role for the low IPT-resistance in M. oryzae, most likely through the down-regulation of the secondary metabolism-related genes or CYP450 genes to reduce the toxicity of IPT. Background: NIPT is becoming increasingly important as its use becomes more widespread in China. More details are urgently needed on the correlation between maternal risk factors and fetal aneuploidy, and how these factors affect the accuracy of prenatal aneuploidy screening. Methods: Information on the pregnant women was collected, including maternal age, gestational age, specific medical history and results of prenatal aneuploidy screening. Additionally, the OR, validity and predictive value were also calculated. Results: A total of 12,186 analysable karyotype reports were collected with 372 (3.05%) fetal aneuploidies, including 161 (1.32%) T21, 81 (0.66%) T18, 41 (0.34%) T13 and 89 (0.73%) SCAs. The OR was highest for maternal age less than 20 years (6.65), followed by over 40 years (3.59) and 35–39 years (2.48). T13 (16.95) and T18 (9.40) were more frequent in the over-40 group (P < 0.01); T13 (3.62/5.76) and SCAs (2.49/3.95) in the 35–39 group (P < 0.01). Cases with a history of fetal malformation had the highest OR (35.94), followed by RSA (13.08): the former was more likely to have T13 (50.65) (P < 0.01) and the latter more likely to have T18 (20.50) (P < 0.01). The sensitivity of primary screening was 73.24% and the NPV was 98.23%. The TPR for NIPT was 100.00% and the respective PPVs for T21, T18, T13 and SCAs were 89.92, 69.77, 53.49 and 43.24%, respectively. The accuracy of NIPT increased with increasing gestational age (0.81). In contrast, the accuracy of NIPT decreased with maternal age (1.12) and IVF-ET history (4.15). Conclusions: ①Pregnant patients with maternal age below 20 years had higher risk of aneuploidy, especially in T13; ②A history of fetal malformations is more risky than RSA, with the former more likely to have T13 and the latter more likely to have T18; ③Primary screening essentially achieves the goal of identifying a normal karyotype, and NIPT can accurately screen for fetal aneuploidy; ④A number of maternal risk factors may influence the accuracy of NIPT diagnosis, including older age, premature testing, or a history of IVF-ET. Purpose: With the progress of medical technology and renovated conception of fertility, the prospective studies and practice of fertility preservation are drawing more and more attention from medical workers. With the largest population of over 1.4 billion, China makes the experience accumulated in fertility preservation efforts even more relevant. This article summarizes China's experience and shares it with the world to promote the healthy development of fertility preservation. Methods: This study was based on multiple Chinese expert consensuses on fertility preservation issued in 2021 and the current national regulations and principles, compared with the latest advice and guidelines issued by global reproductive authorities such as the ASRM and ESHRE. Summarize the experience and reflection of Chinese scholars in the process of fertility preservation. Results: This study reports on the current situation of fertility preservation in China, sharing the Chinese experience gained in the process of development, and offering Chinese reflections on worrying issues. Colletotrichum species are important plant pathogens, causing anthracnose in virtually every crop grown throughout the world. However, little is known about the species that infect watermelon. A total of 526 strains were isolated from diseased watermelon samples of eight major watermelon growing provinces in China. Phylogenetic analyses using seven loci (ITS, gadph, chs-1, his3, act, tub2, and gs) coupled with morphology of 146 representative isolates showed that they belonged to 12 known species of Colletotrichum, including C. aenigma, C. chlorophyti, C. fructicola, C. jiangxiense, C. karstii, C. magnum, C. nymphaeae, C. nigrum, C. orbiculare, C. plurivorum, C. sojae, and C. truncatum and three new species, here described as C. citrulli, C. kaifengense, and C. qilinense. Colletotrichum orbiculare was the dominant species. Pathogenicity tests revealed that all isolates of the species described above were pathogenic, with C. magnum and C. kaifengense being the most aggressive to leaves and fruits, respectively. This is the first report of C. aenigma, C. chlorophyti, C. fructicola, C. jiangxiense, C. nymphaeae, C. nigrum, C. plurivorum, and C. sojae on watermelon. These findings shed light on the Colletotrichum spp. involved in watermelon anthracnose and provide useful information for implementing effective control of watermelon anthracnose in China. Peach is a popular and important tree fruit widely produced in the world, and the production of high-quality peach fruit does require management of pests and diseases. In this review, major peach diseases from China, Spain, and USA are described in detail for the benefit of producers, consultants, researchers, and other interested parties. Minor diseases of concern in these countries are also described. Current progress on pathogen resistance to major chemical classes of fungicides as well as current resistance management practices are discussed. Specific cultural practices applied in China, Spain, and USA are also described to provide an overview of peach disease management. In the Luzhou Block of the southern Sichuan Basin, the deep Longmaxi shales have become important exploration targets in recent years. However, the water-bearing properties of these shales are still unclear, which significantly limits evaluations of reservoir pore structures and gas-in-place (GIP) contents. In this study, twelve fresh shale core samples were collected at the well site, and the pore water (CPW) and equilibrium water (CEW) contents, as well as the pore structures of the shales, were analyzed under both as-received and dried conditions. The results indicate that the deep shales have low water-bearing extents with a pore water content (CPW) of 3.82–16.67 mg/g, and that both the organic matter (OM) and inorganic matter (IM) pores can be used for pore water storage. The extent of influence of pore water on nonmicropores and IM pore structures is more significant than that on micropores and OM pore structures. Meanwhile, the pore water obviously reduces the retention effects of nanopores and may block nanopores with pore widths < 0.5 nm. An average of 40% of pore spaces were taken up by pore water in the studied deep shales in the Luzhou Block, and the residual pore surface area and pore volume of the shales were mainly contributed from micropores and nonmicropores, respectively. Substantial research has been conducted on the mechanisms responsible for the wellbore collapse in shale formations. For chemically active soft shale formations, pore pressure and stress change due to osmotic pressure and hydration swelling are usually recognized as the primary mechanisms, while for chemically inactive hard shale formation, wellbore instability is generally attributed to weak structural planes like bedding planes and microcracks. In this paper, experimental testing and analytical and numerical analyses are performed to reveal the dominant mechanism of the frequently encountered severe wellbore instability events in the middle-deep shale formation in the Bohai oil field of China. It is evidenced from the physical and chemical experimental testing that the middle-deep shale features both medium chemical activity and abundant bedding planes and microcracks, indicating that the middle-deep shale is in the transition process from chemically actively soft shale to the chemically inactive but laminated and fractured hard shale. Mechanical testing also shows considerable strength degradation of the middle-deep transition shale due to drilling fluid-shale interaction. Analysis through a hydro-chemo-mechanical coupling theory shows that the extent of the damage zone around the wellbore is limited if only pore pressure change and hydration swelling caused by the chemical difference between the drilling fluid and the formation fluid are considered, which cannot explain the severe wellbore collapse in the drilling process. In contrast, when pore pressure increase and strength degradation of the shale due to drilling fluid penetration along the bedding planes and microcracks are taken into account, a damage zone of 3~4 times of the wellbore diameter can be generated, implying that the dominant mechanism of the wellbore instability in the middle-deep transition shale formation should be the pore pressure change and strength degradation resulted from drilling fluid penetration along the bedding planes and microcracks. Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most serious form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis , and is characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, it is difficult to distinguish TBM from bacterial meningitis (BM) based on clinical features alone. The latest diagnostic tests and neuroimaging methods are still not available in many developing countries. This study aimed to develop a simple diagnostic algorithm based on clinical and laboratory test results as an early predictor of TBM in South China. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to compare the clinical and laboratory characteristics of 114 patients with TBM and 47 with BM. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on the characteristics of independently predicted TBM to develop a new diagnostic rule. Results: Five characteristics were predictive of a diagnosis of TBM: duration of symptoms before admission; tuberculous symptoms; white blood cell (WBC) count, total cerebrospinal fluid WBC count, and cerebrospinal fluid chloride concentration. The sensitivity and specificity of the new scoring system developed in this study were 81.6 and 93.6%, respectively. Conclusion: The new scoring system proposed in this study can help physicians empirically diagnose TBM and can be used in countries and regions with limited microbial and radiological resources. Colletotrichum is regarded as one of the 10 most important genera of plant pathogens in the world. It causes diseases in a wide range of economically important plants, including peaches. China is the largest producer of peaches in the world but little is known about the Colletotrichum spp. affecting the crop. In 2017 and 2018, a total of 286 Colletotrichum isolates were isolated from symptomatic fruit and leaves in 11 peach production provinces of China. Based on multilocus phylogenetic analyses (ITS, ACT, CAL, CHS-1, GAPDH, TUB2, and HIS3) and morphological characterization, the isolates were identified to be C. nymphaeae, C. fioriniae, and C. godetiae of the C. acutatum species complex, C. fructicola and C. siamense of the C. gloeosporioides species complex, C. karsti of the C. boninense species complex, and one newly identified species, C. folicola sp. nov. This study is the first report of C. karsti and C. godetiae in peaches, and the first report of C. nymphaeae, C. fioriniae, C. fructicola, and C. siamense in peaches in China. C. nymphaeae is the most prevalent species of Colletotrichum in peaches in China, which may be the result of fungicide selection. Pathogenicity tests revealed that all species found in this study were pathogenic on both the leaves and fruit of peaches, except for C. folicola, which only infected the leaves. Impulse waves generated by the collapse of pillar-shaped rock masses in Three Gorges, China, have attracted the attention of both researchers and local authorities owing to their catastrophic consequences. In this work, particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) was used to study impulse waves generated by the collapse of granular pillars during a series of physical experiments. Subsequently, the scenes of particles collapsing into water and the resulting impulse waves were analysed in terms of the solid/fluid fields. The energy obtained by the water during this process is mainly derived from the volume encroachment and continuous thrusting of particles. As indicated by the experimental results, as the aspect ratio (a) of the pillar and water depth increased, the potential energy of the granular pillar became more prone to reduction, whereas the efficiency of energy conversion to the liquid phase reduced. At constant water depth and granular pillar width, the maximum amplitude generated by the collapse of the granular pillar remained essentially the same (i.e., "saturation" was achieved) once the aspect ratio exceeded a certain threshold. The maximum impulse wave (the primary wave) formed before the main body of particles collapsed, resulting in the "saturation" of the maximum amplitude. When the kinetic energy of the particles reaches the maximum, the ratio of energy dissipation of the particles is the lowest; as the energy of water reaches the maximum, the particle collapse process does not end. The dynamic analysis of the impulse waves generated by the collapse of granular pillars provides a new approach to obtain an in-depth understanding of landslides and impulse waves. Background: Esophageal cancer is the fifth most common cancer affecting men in China. The primary treatment options are surgery and traditional radio-chemotherapy; no effective targeted therapy exists yet. Self-assembled RNA nanocarriers are highly stable, easily functionally modified, and have weak off-tumor targeting effects. Thus, they are among the most preferred carriers for mediating the targeted delivery of anti-tumor drugs. miR-375 was found to be significantly down-regulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and its overexpression effectively inhibits the proliferation, migration, and invasion of ESCC cells. Moreover, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was overexpressed in ESCC cells, and accumulation of RNA nanoparticles in ESCC tumors was enhanced by EGFR-specific aptamer (EGFRapt) modification. Results: Herein, a novel four-way junction RNA nanocarrier, 4WJ-EGFRapt-miR-375-PTX simultaneously loaded with miR-375, PTX and decorated with EGFRapt, was developed. In vitro analysis demonstrated that 4WJ-EGFRapt-miR-375-PTX possesses strong thermal and pH stabilities. EGFRapt decoration facilitated tumor cell endocytosis and promoted deep penetration into 3D-ESCC spheroids. Xenograft mouse model for ESCC confirmed that 4WJ-EGFRapt-miR-375-PTX was selectively distributed in tumor sites via EGFRapt-mediating active targeting and targeted co-delivery of miR-375 and PTX exhibited more effective therapeutic efficacy with low systemic toxicity. Peach bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap) is a devastating disease worldwide and frequently causes massive economic losses. In recent years, it has become a pandemic outbreak in most peach production areas of China, especially on precocious peaches in the middle reach of the Yangtze River. Rapid, user-friendly detection is extremely important to make the correct diagnosis and develop suitable control strategies. In this study, we described a recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)/Cas12a-based system that combines RPA and CRISPR/Cas12a for Xap identification. A total of three crRNAs were designed to target a highly conserved ABC transporter ATP-binding protein-encoding gene ftsX to make specific detection of Xap. Results showed that crRNA 2 and crRNA 3 could get consistent detection for Xap. To realize the visualization of detection results, we additionally introduced FQ-reporter and FB-reporter. The developed method was highly sensitive and could detect as low as 10–18 M Xap gDNA with a mini-UV torch, corresponding to 1.63 copies/μl or 8.855 fg/μl gDNA of Xap , while with lateral flow strips, the sensitivity was 10–17 M. In addition, this method could specifically detect Xap from other closely related bacteria or pathogens associated with peach diseases. Furthermore, this method could make correct identification for Xap with crude DNA using NaOH-based extraction (3 min) directly from diseased peach samples. Considering that the developed method could get results within 2 h and could be performed at 37°C (body temperature), it is promising to be applied for Xap diagnosis and monitoring in fields. There are various sedimentary structures developed in the black shales of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Luzhou area, southern Sichuan Basin, southwestern China. In order to evaluate the controlling effects of sedimentary structures on the key parameters of shale reservoir properties, collected classification of sedimentary structures, scanning electron microscope observation, analysis of shale fabric and porosity characteristics, low‐pressure nitrogen adsorption, methane isothermal adsorption, and conventional triaxial compression test were carried out based on shale samples from Wells A‐H1, B‐H1, C‐H1 and D‐H1 in the study area. The sedimentary structures recorded in these shales are categorized into five types: homogeneous bedding, weak horizontal bedding, strong horizontal bedding, discontinuous ripple bedding, and gravel‐bearing massive bedding. In general, the palaeo‐hydrodynamics and oxygen content of water columns were weak when homogeneous bedding shale was deposited. The organic matter is the most abundant and the total organic carbon content is up to 4.01% on average. The average quartz content is 43.5%, and the brittleness index is the highest. The porosity and adsorption capacity were the highest, with an average of 4.57% and 79.5 scf/ton, respectively. Combined with its mechanical properties of low Poisson's ratio and high Young's modulus, homogeneous bedding sedimentary structure is associated with the shale units possessing the highest organic matter abundance, the strongest reservoir property, and the best fracability, which is the priority target for exploration and development of the Wufeng to lower Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, southwestern China. Questions: What are the characteristics of the spatial patterns of soil seed banks (SSBs) at local scales? How does the spatial distribution of SSBs relate to above‐ground vegetation? Location: The piedmont plain of the eastern slope of Gandur mountain, Wuhai, northwestern China. Methods: A plot of 50 m × 50 m square, divided into 100 quadrats (5 m × 5 m) and 100 subquadrats (1 m × 1 m), was prepared to conduct a field survey of vegetation and SSB sampling. We analyzed the spatial pattern of 196 samples at different scales and directions with geostatistical analysis. The relationship between above‐ground vegetation and SSB was quantified by integrating geostatistics, point pattern analysis, and spatial comparison (IGPS). Results: The SSB density in the study area was 404.5 ± 352 seeds·m−2. SSBs of shrub species and herbaceous species Ⅱ (occurring only below‐ground) had a moderate spatial autocorrelation, and their spatial dependence increased with increasing scale. The SSB of herbaceous species Ⅰ (occurring both above‐ground and below‐ground) had great spatial autocorrelation, and its spatial dependence showed an initial decrease and then increased. Furthermore, SSBs showed lower spatial heterogeneity in the prevailing wind direction than in other directions. The spatial patterns of SSBs of shrub species and herbaceous species Ⅰ correlated with shrubs within a specific range, but not with herbs, while the SSB of herbaceous species Ⅱ did not have a spatial relationship with above‐ground vegetation. Conclusion: The spatial pattern of SSBs had scale dependence features, which exhibited clustered distribution at a certain scale, and were significantly correlated with above‐ground shrubs. Therefore, we suggest subsampling larger quadrats with smaller sample units near shrubs in desert areas. Background: Impatiens L. is a genus of complex taxonomy that belongs to the family Balsaminaceae (Ericales) and contains approximately 1000 species. The genus is well known for its economic, medicinal, ornamental, and horticultural value. However, knowledge about its germplasm identification, molecular phylogeny, and chloroplast genomics is limited, and taxonomic uncertainties still exist due to overlapping morphological features and insufficient genomic resources. Results: We sequenced the chloroplast genomes of six different species (Impatiens chlorosepala, Impatiens fanjingshanica, Impatiens guizhouensis, Impatiens linearisepala, Impatiens loulanensis, and Impatiens stenosepala) in the karst area of China and compared them with those of six previously published Balsaminaceae species. We contrasted genomic features and repeat sequences, assessed sequence divergence and constructed phylogenetic relationships. Except for those of I. alpicola, I. pritzelii and I. glandulifera, the complete chloroplast genomes ranging in size from 151,366 bp (I. alpicola) to 154,189 bp (Hydrocera triflora) encoded 115 distinct genes [81 protein-coding, 30 transfer RNA (tRNA), and 4 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes]. The shale of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation is an important gas-producing layer for shale gas development in southern China. This set of shale reservoir characteristics and shale gas development potential provide an important foundation for shale gas development. This study takes wellblock XN111 in the Sichuan Basin, China, as an example and uses X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), isothermal adsorption, and other techniques to analyze the shale reservoir characteristics of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation. The results show that the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation was deposited in a deep-water shelf environment. During this period, carbonaceous shale and siliceous shale characterized by a high brittle mineral content (quartz > 40 wt. % , carbonate mineral > 10 wt. %) and a low clay mineral content (<30 wt.%, mainly illite) were widely deposited throughout the region. The total organic carbon (TOC) content reaches up to 6.07 wt.%, with an average of 2.66 wt.%. The vitrinite reflectance is 1.6–2.28%, with an average of 2.05%. The methane adsorption capacity is 0.84–4.69 m3/t, with an average of 2.92 m3/t. Pores and fractures are developed in the shale reservoirs. The main reservoir space is composed of connected mesopores with an average porosity of 4.78%. The characteristics and development potential of the shale reservoirs in the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation are controlled by the following factors: (1) the widespread deep-water shelf deposition in wellblock XN111 was a favorable environment for the development of high-quality shale reservoirs with a cumulative thickness of up to 50 m; (2) the high TOC content enabled the shale reservoir to have a high free gas content and a high adsorptive gas storage capacity; and (3) the shale's high maturity or over maturity is conducive to the development of pores and fractures in the organic matter, which effectively improves the storage capacity of the shale reservoirs. The reservoir characteristic index was constructed using the high-quality shale's thickness, gas content, TOC, fracture density, and clay content. Using production data from shale gas wells in adjacent blocks, a mathematical relationship was established between the Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) of a single well and the Reservoir Characteristics Index (Rci). Our study aimed to uncover the functions of two species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in soil aggregation and plant water content regulation under wetting–drying climate conditions. The climatic characteristics of seasonal drought in karst areas were simulated. Two watering periods were established in a controlled greenhouse to compare the different effects of two genetically different AMF species (Funneliformis mosseae and Rhizophagus intraradices) on the water content of 90-day-old mulberry seedlings and on soil aggregates. Our results showed that inoculation with the Rhizophagus intraradices (R.i) strain was more effective at improving mulberry growth performance than Funneliformis mosseae (F.m) inoculation under semiarid conditions. The AMF remained highly infective and continuously increased the proportion of soil macroaggregates under soil drought stress. The lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation hosts a highly productive shale gas play in the Zhaotong region of southern China. According to core observation, X-ray diffraction analyses, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, the shale comprises primarily quartz, carbonate minerals, and clay minerals, with minor amounts of plagioclase, K-feldspar, and pyrite. The clay mineral content ranges from 15.0% to 46.1%, with an average of 29.3% in the Zhaotong region. Organic geochemical analyses show that the Longmaxi Formation has good potential for shale gas resources by calculating total organic carbon, vitrinite reflectance, and gas content. Scanning electron microscope images demonstrate that reservoir pore types in the Longmaxi shale include organic pores, interparticle pores, intercrystalline pores, intraparticle pores, and fractures. Reservoir distribution is controlled by lithofacies, mineral composition, and geochemical factors. In addition, we investigated the relationships between reservoir parameters and production from 15 individual wells in the Zhaotong region by correlation coefficients. As a result, the brittleness index, total organic carbon (TOC), porosity, and gas content were used to define high-quality reservoirs in the Longmaxi shale. Based on these criteria, we mapped the thickness and distribution of high-quality reservoirs in the Longmaxi Formation and selected highlighted several key sites for future exploration and development. However, in arid mining area, it remains unclear how the anthropogenic disturbances affect the seed banks and what its potential for vegetation restoration. We conducted a field study to investigate the variation of aboveground plant communities and seed banks along the disturbance gradient in an opencast mining area in arid desert of northwestern China. Furthermore, we detected the influence path of disturbance on seed bank density and richness at different layers. The seed bank had considerable density, with persistent seed accounting for 46%. The density had no significant differences along the none-to-moderate disturbance gradient but decreased significantly at the severe level. Meanwhile, the richness had significant differences among all disturbance levels with the highest value at mild level. There were low similarities between soil seed bank and aboveground vegetation, and their species composition was distinctly different. The anthropogenic disturbances reduced soil seed bank directly. Besides, it indirectly decreased the density of persistent seed bank at shallow layer via the negative impact on silt content. In contrast, disturbance indirectly reduced transient seed density and richness mainly via the positive effect on aboveground vegetation. Briefly, mild-to-moderate disturbance had limited negative effects on the soil seed bank and its restoration potential in the arid mining region. Our study highlights the soil seed banks as supplementary indicator to reflect ecological degradation and the significance for ecosystem recovery. Background: As the fourth leading cause of death, injury is an important public health concern in Guangdong Province, China. The epidemiological characteristics of injury mortality is changing along with the social development. This study described the epidemiological characteristics of injury mortality in Guangdong Province by analyzing the death surveillance data in a few areas in Guangdong Province in 2015.Methods: Using the mortality data from the Disease Surveillance Points (DSP) system, injury deaths were classified according to the International Classification of Disease-10th Revision (ICD-10). The data were stratified by areas (urban/rural), gender, age groups, injury types, and then overall and type-specific injury mortality rates were estimated for the whole Guangdong Province, China.Results: We estimated that about 38,200 individuals died from injury in Guangdong Province in 2015, producing a mortality rate of 43.11/100,000. The overall age-standardized injury mortality in men was higher in rural areas compared with urban areas (41.29/100,000 versus 24.89/100,000). In terms of injury intent, unintentional injuries were the commonnest injury type, which accounted for 83.93% of the overall injury deaths, however, the deaths caused by suicide should not be ignored, which occupied 12.67% of the total injury deaths. In terms of injury cause type, falls, road-traffic accidents, suicide, drowning, and accidental poisoning were the top five leading types of injury deaths.Conclusions: In Guangdong Province, injury is an important cause of death. Road-traffic accidents, falls, suicide, drowning, and accidental poisoning should be the priorities of intervention. The Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale in the Upper Yangtze block represents one of the most important shale gas plays in China. The shale composition, porosity, organic thermal maturity, and methane sorption were investigated at the Qilongcun section in the Dingshan area, southeastern Sichuan Basin. The results show that the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale contains: (1) sapropelic I organic matter; (2) a 40-m thick bedded sequence where total organic carbon (TOC) content is > 2%; (3) a 30m thick layer at the base of the Longmaxi Shale with a brittle mineral content higher than 50%; and (4) a mean methane adsorption capacity of 1.80 cm3/g (7 MPa pressure). A positive correlation between TOC and sorbed gas indicates that organic matter content exerts an important control on methane storage capacity. Based on the analysis of the shale reservoir characteristics, the lower member of the Longmaxi Shale can thus be considered a favorable stratum for shale gas exploration and exploitation. It has similar reservoir characteristics with the Longmaxi Shale in the Jiaoshiba area tested with a high-yield industrial gas flow. However, based on tectonic analysis, differences in the level of industrial gas flow between the low-yield study area and the high-yield Jiaoshiba area may result from different tectonic preservation conditions. Currently, Luzhou in the Sichuan Basin is a focal point for shale-gas exploration and development in China. However, a lack of detailed research on the mineral composition of the Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation (WF-LF) shale is hindering the extraction of deep-buried shale gas in the Luzhou shale play. Herein, a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) equipped with the Advanced Mineral Identification and Characterization System (AMICS) software was employed to analyze the mineral composition of the WF-LF shale from six wells in Luzhou. Quartz was the dominant mineral type, (16.9–87.21%, average 51.33%), followed by illite, calcite, dolomite, and pyrite. Our study revealed that (1) quartz content showed a moderate positive correlation with the total organic carbon (TOC) content, indicating that the quartz found in the shale is mostly of biological origin; and (2) the sum content of siliceous minerals and carbonaceous minerals was moderately positively correlated with the brittleness index (BRIT) in well SS1H2-7 and in the well group of RS8 and RS5, indicating that the siliceous minerals and carbonaceous minerals had an active effect on reservoir compressibility. This study examines the effects of hydrologic sorting and mixing of sources on the Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of suspended sediments at different water depths. The samples were collected from three layers (surface, middle and bottom) at Datong hydrological station of Yangtze River during the flood season of 2010. Our results show that, Sr/Sr values decrease from surface to bottom, ranging from 0.730332 to 0.720857. ɛ(0) values range from −14.75 to −10.09, with surface sediments being the most negative. The isotope composition at the middle layer can best represent the mean isotopic composition of the total suspended sediments transported by a river. It is believed that the stratification of Sr-Nd isotope is attributable to mixing of sediments from different sources due to hydrological sorting. Sediments from the upper stream are found to be coarser, and tend to contribute more to the lower water column. Although Sr-Nd isotope is a well acknowledged tool to trace sediment provenance, the current study suggests that the grain size of the samples and the sampling locations should be taken into consideration when applying this method to provenance study. Abstract: One of the greatest problems in using renewable energy sources is the great variability of energy level, both in the short and long term. Geothermal energy, by nature, has high availability because the source is not dependent on weather conditions, so it is among the most stable renewable energy sources. In China, urban populations are provided with their electricity requirements, but rural areas need guaranteed electricity for socio-economic development. Fortunately, mid-low temperature geothermal resources are located proximal to rural areas without access to grid electricity in China. Small-scale geothermal power plants can support electricity demand as well as create employment opportunities for the rural public. Therefore, geothermal energy has the potential to play an important role in the future energy supply of China. Based on mid-low temperature geothermal resource and waste heat resource, the paper introduces the energy efficiency of single-flash and binary cycle geothermal power plant. The result shows that binary cycle plant is favorable for power generation when water temperature is below 130 °C, otherwise, flash steam power plant is a better choice. Furthermore, two project cases were analyzed in the end, focusing on the operating parameters and thermal efficiency. A 10.35-m-long sediment core from the Luobei depression in Lop-Nur, Xinjiang, Northwest China, provides detailed information about environmental changes during the Late Pleistocene. The samples taken every 5 cm of the core were analyzed for 10 environmental proxies, including magnetic susceptibility, granularity, chroma, carbonate and loss on ignition (LOI), and pH value. The chronology data are provided by the uranium/thorium disequilibrium dates. The sediments of the section were deposited during the last 32000 years. The results of analysis of 10 proxies were examined using multivariate statistical analysis, and the principal components were calculated. According to the results, the Late Pleistocene sequence contains four climatic and environmental stages appearing in the cycles of cold-wet and warm-dry changes. During 10-9 ka BP, it was the earliest warm episode in the Holocene. Environmental changes in this district were restricted by global change, as suggested by the analysis of glacial-interglacial cycles. But it was different from the mutative trend of a monsoon region in East China because of its own characteristics, which was the situation of cold-wet and warm-dry climate-environment change. The Nanfengmiju (Citrus reticulata cv. Nanfengmiju), a high-quality local variety of mandarin, is one of the major fruit crops in Jiangxi Province, China. Citrus melanose and stem-end rot, two common fungal diseases of Nanfengmiju, are both caused by Diaporthe spp. (syn. Phomopsis spp.). Identification of the Diaporthe species is essential for epidemiological studies, quarantine measures, and management of diseases caused by these fungi. Melanose disease was observed on Nanfengmiju fruit in Jiangxi Province of China in 2016. Based on morphological characterization and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses, three out of 39 isolates from diseased samples were identified as D. passifloricola. Since these three isolates did not cause melanose on citrus fruit in the pathogenicity tests, they were presumed to be endophytic fungi present in the diseased tissues. However, our results indicate that D. passifloricola may persist as a symptom-less endophyte in the peel of citrus fruit, yet it may cause stem-end if it invades the stem end during fruit storage. The waste-to-energy (WTE) project can handle the expanding volume of municipal solid waste (MSW) and promote the development of the circular economy, effectively. To achieve sustainable MSW management, it is pivotal to select a promising WTE incineration plant site. Thus, this paper aims to propose a novel methodology for selecting the optimal WTE incineration plant site. A sustainable evaluation index system is constructed from the environment, economy, society, risk, and energy aspects. Evaluation criteria are articulated by mathematical models and hesitant fuzzy linguistic term set, respectively. Given interactional relations among criteria and computation efficiency, HFL-BWM-ANP (hesitant fuzzy linguistic Best-Worst method-Analytic Network Process) is proposed to obtain criteria weights. The double parameters TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) approach is employed to rank alternative sites. The feasibility of the proposed methodology is illustrated by a numerical case. Triple sensitivity analysis and comparative analysis are performed to demonstrate the robustness, effectiveness, and superiority of the proposed methodology. The pressure decay (or gas expansion) test with crushed samples has been used to evaluate the matrix permeability of shale and other low-permeability rock for many years. However, there still exist uncertainties relating to particle size and equilibrium pressure. The existing late-stage curve fitting method has the advantage of easy calculation, but the assumption that gas enters particles with a single permeability value is not generally applicable for shale samples, and late-stage analysis may lead to underestimation. This study proposes an optimization method to determine the equivalent bulk permeability that ensures the smallest sum of squares of errors between the forward-predicted pressure decay curve and the measure one. Both the optimization and curve fitting method are applied to two shale samples from the Ordovician Wufeng Formation of two wells in the Sichuan Basin, China with improved apparatus and testing procedures. The optimization method is superior to the curve fitting method in the repeatability and regularity on the change of apparent permeability with pressure. A strong linear relationship between apparent permeability and coefficient of compressibility is established between 3 and 12 bars. The variation of permeability with particle size is more diverse than that is commonly understood and might be nonmonotonic, depending on the change of pore structure during crushing. Change of apparent permeability with pressure (non-Darcy feature) is proposed as a criterion of whether pore structure has changed significantly. Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has been the most serious public health emergency encountered in modern assisted reproductive technology (ART) development. In order to identify lessons learned, this study reviews the effect of the pandemic on ART institutions and human sperm banks in China, and summarizes the experiences and reflections of Chinese scholars post-pandemic era. Methods: This review is based on multiple consensus statements on the COVID-19 pandemic issued by Chinese experts as well as current national regulations and principles in ART institutions and human sperm banks to document the current situation of ART services in China, describe the impact of the pandemic on these services, and offer Chinese reflections on worrying issues in the post-pandemic era. Results: China reached one million ART cycles in 2016, and there are currently 540 ART medical institutions and 27 human sperm banks, with 540 licensed for AIH, 91 for AID, 415 for conventional IVF and ICSI and 85 for PGT. Of these, only 4 institutions carry out 10,000 cycles or more annually, and the proportion of institutions with less than 1,000 cycles has reached 66%, which means that a considerable number of ART institutions are still not saturated. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, 63.6% of ART providers and 95.5% of human sperm banks suspended operations. By the end of May 2020, China, as an early country affected by the pandemic achieved a national resumption rate of ART medical services of 99.2% and that of human sperm banks of 100.0%. Reports from the first and largest human sperm bank in China showed that qualification, semen concentration and sperm viability rates measured at primary screening have significantly decreased post-pandemic. Much like in other countries, Chinese experts developed a consensus on prevention and control measures during the pandemic. In principle, all ART activities should be suspended during acute phases of infection spread. Chinese scholars highlight that attention should be paid to young patients with fertility requirements during and after COVID-19, and emphasize the importance of fertility evaluation and clinical intervention. In addition, couples should be reminded that during ART treatment, disinfectants should not be used excessively to minimize risks of damaging the reproductive system, gametes and zygotes. At the same time, timely and reasonable guidance for tackling negative emotions from stress response is needed to provide reassurance and to avoid irrational fear and excessive stress. Seminal parameters should be re-examined 2 months after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and ART treatments recommenced if no abnormalities are detected. Conclusions: Given the growing frequency of outbreaks of global infectious diseases in recent years, ART institutions and human sperm banks should pay attention to improving their prevention and control capabilities. To a certain extent, decisions and measures adopted in China during COVID-19 pandemic are worthy of recognition and acceptance. In this paper, we present a large amount of carbon isotopic data from mud gas isotope logging and rock-cutting headspace gas in wellsites. The δ13C 1 values showed a significant decrease at the bottom of the Longmaxi Formation. The δ13C 1 and δ13C 2 values in the Changning area were observed to be heavier than those in the Weiyuan and Jiaoshiba areas. The second half of the N216H27-3 horizontal well had obvious outgassing and carbon isotope fractionation effects. This indicates that the bottom of the Longmaxi Formation has better shale gas exploration potential. The shale gas of the Longmaxi Formation in the Changning area belongs to late kerogen cracking gas, where exploration prospects are poorer than those in the Weiyuan and Jiaoshiba areas. New correlations found between compositions and methane adsorption characteristic parameters guide the establishment of a composition-based methane adsorption model that the excess adsorption isotherm of shale is the content-weighted sum of equivalent unit-content excess isotherms for organic matter and clay. With this model, the differences of excess isotherms of these two compositions and the differences of clay-contribution to methane adsorption for different sublayers are disclosed. Abstract: A 9.35-m long sediment core, CK2, that covers the time span between 31.98 and 9.14 kilo annum before present (ka BP) at the Luobei Depression (Lop Nur, Eastern Xinjiang, Northwest China) was studied by pollen analysis. The pollen assemblages of coniferous trees, temperate deciduous trees, herbs, and shrubs can be divided into the following four stages: Zone I (31.98ka BP to 19.26ka BP) corresponds to a steppe or desert steppe landscape, which conforms to the cold-wet climatic environment of the Last Glacial Maximum; Zone II (19.26ka BP to 13.67ka BP) corresponds to a steppe–desert or desert landscape, which conforms to the warm-arid climatic environment of the transient interglacial period; Zones III (13.67ka BP to 12.73ka BP) and IV (12.73ka BP to 9.14ka BP) are similar to Zones I and II, respectively, corresponding to the late last glacial and post last glacial, i.e., Early Holocene, respectively. The climatic environment in Lop Nur was increasingly getting drier based on Artemisia/Chenopodiaceae ratios of ≤0.5 in Subzones IVa and IVc. The Heinrich cold events (H3, H2, H1, and YD) and the Dansgaard–Oeschger warm events (IS4, IS3, IS2, IS1) with millennial-scale changes appearing at high latitudes can also be found in the pollen records of Lop Nur. Results show that the climate characteristics of the Lop Nur region are mainly controlled by the westerly belt, as displayed in mainly cold-wet or warm-arid synchronization. These climate characteristics differ from those of the monsoon area, which are mainly displayed in cold-arid and warm-wet synchronization but also restricted by the atmospheric circulation at high latitudes. Comprehending endangered species' spatial distribution in response to global climate change (GCC) is of great importance for formulating adaptive management, conservation, and restoration plans. However, it is regrettable that previous studies mainly focused on geoclimatic species, while neglected climate-sensitive subterranean taxa to a large extent, which clearly hampered the discovery of universal principles. In view of this, taking the endemic troglophile riverine fish Onychostoma macrolepis (Bleeker, 1871) as an example, we constructed a MaxEnt (maximum-entropy) model to predict how the spatial distribution of this endangered fish would respond to future climate changes (three Global Climate Models × two Shared Socio-economic Pathways × three future time nodes) based on painstakingly collected species occurrence data and a set of bioclimatic variables, including WorldClim and ENVIREM. Model results showed that variables related to temperature rather than precipitation were more important in determining the geographic distribution of this rare and endemic fish. In addition, the suitable areas and their distribution centroids of O. macrolepis would shrink (average: 20,901.75 km2) and move toward the northeast or northwest within the study area (i.e. China). Linking our results with this species' limited dispersion potential and unique habitat requirements (i.e. karst landform is essential), we thus recommended in situ conservation to protect this relict. [Display omitted] • A porphyry-epithermal Au system is developed in the Songshunangou district. • The Songshunangou porphyry-epithermal Au system formed in the Early Paleozoic. • The Songshunangou porphyry-epithermal Au system formed in a magmatic arc setting. The Songshunangou district is located in the central part of the North Qilian orogenic belt and hosts both the Eastern and Western deposits. The Western deposit is a porphyry-Au deposit, characterized by concentrated high-grade Au mineralization within a quartz-dioritic porphyry and occurs along the contact to basaltic andesite. Alteration is concentric with potassic alteration associated with high-grade Au mineralization in the core zone, while surrounding propylitic alteration is associated with an only lower-grade Au mineralization. Barren sericite-chlorite alteration is restricted to shallow zones above or partially overprinted the potassic alteration. Mineralization, including chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrite, magnetite, native gold with minor galena, sphalerite, hematite, and covellite, is observed as quartz-sulfide stockworks and fine-grained disseminations in different alteration zones. LA-ICP-MS zircon U–Pb dating of samples from the ore-bearing quartz-dioritic porphyry, the post-mineralization dioritic porphyry and the granodioritic porphyry in the Western deposit yield mean 206Pb/238U ages of 456.3 ± 2.0 Ma to 454.9 ± 2.4 Ma, and 449.5 ± 4.5 Ma to 448.3 ± 1.4 Ma, respectively. Pyrite from quartz – chalcopyrite – bornite veinlets in the Western deposit yields a Re-Os isochron age of 454.6 ± 3.7 Ma. In the Eastern deposit, which is an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposit hosted in basaltic andesite, sericite-chlorite alteration is associated with the mineralization. The mineralization is predominantly found within veins and disseminated, primarily composed of galena, sphalerite, native gold, tetrahedrite, and minor chalcopyrite, pyrite, and covellite. The alteration mineral assemblage comprises sericite, chlorite, Mn-calcite, quartz, calcite, and minor epidote. A Mn-calcite – quartz – polymetallic vein from the Eastern deposit yields a calcite Sm-Nd isochron age of 453.2 ± 5.8 Ma, suggesting that intermediate-sulfidation mineralization was coeval with the emplacement of the ore-bearing quartz-dioritic porphyry and the porphyry mineralization in the Western deposit. Based on these geologic features and geochronological data, we conclude that an early Paleozoic porphyry-epithermal Au system developed in the Songshunangou district, which formed in an arc setting associated with the northward subduction of the North Qilian Ocean beneath the North Qilian orogenic belt. Background Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading many diseases and their populations are susceptible to environmental changes. The ecosystems in the Three Gorges Region were probably altered because of changes to the environment during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), the world's largest hydroelectric dam by generating capacity. Methods We selected three sites at which to monitor the mosquitoes from 1997 to 2009. We captured adult mosquitoes with battery-powered aspirators fortnightly between May and September of each year in dwellings and sheds. We identified the mosquito species, and examined changes in the species density during the TGD construction. We monitored changes in the species and density of mosquitoes in this area for 13 years during the TGD construction and collected information that could be used to support the control and prevention of mosquito-borne infections. Results We found that the mosquito species composition around the residential areas remained the same, and the density changed gradually during the TGD construction. The changes in the populations tended to be consistent over the years, and the densities were highest in July, and were between 3 and 5 times greater in the sheds than in the dwellings. Conclusions The mosquito species and populations remained stable during the construction of the TGD. The mosquito density may have increased as the reservoir filled, and may have decreased during the clean-up work. Clean-up work may be an effective way to control mosquitoes and prevent mosquito-borne diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Major reorganizations in climate and tectonic regime occurred in East Asia during the Pleistocene, resulting in large-scale environmental changes. In this paper a detailed geochemical and mineralogical record of these changes is presented from a distal alluvial fan sedimentary sequence in the northern Weihe Basin. We established that, in addition to glacial-interglacial variation, there are three distinctly different units deposited over the past 1 m.y. These units are the result of variations in the overall tectonic regime in the northern Weihe Basin. Fine-grained detrital minerals were predominantly delivered during colder climatic periods, whereas evaporative minerals were dominantly deposited during the warmer, interglacial periods, probably as a result of strong seasonal contrast. This compositional variation demonstrates the importance of climate control on hinterland erosion, surface runoff, chemical weathering and evaporation. Al-normalized ratios of indicative major elements relative to average loess composition, indicate important variations in sedimentary processes, mostly related to sediment flux. Si-enrichment is an index for past flooding events, while Fe enrichment, just like K and Ti, reflects influx of clays. In contrast, Ca and Mn are strongly enriched throughout the core, associated with the authigenic precipitation of carbonates, especially during interglacial periods. The lower (~ 1000–690 ka) and upper (~ 330–0 ka) units of the core are characterized by relative intense and frequent flooding, which coincided with extensive ponding in the study area. In the middle unit (~ 690–330 ka) increased salinity levels caused by evaporation, as reflected in the high Sr/Ca ratio and dolomite abundance, led to increased carbonate precipitation. Simultaneously, the increased influx of fine sediments indicates increased clay production in the source area as a result of a more intense summer monsoon strength after 600 ka. Peach is one of the popular and economically important fruit crops in China. Peach cultivation is hampered due to attacks of anthracnose disease, causing significant economic losses. Colletotrichum fructicola and Colletotrichum siamense belong to the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex and are considered major pathogens of peach anthracnose. Application of different groups of fungicides is a routine approach for controlling this disease. However, fungicide resistance is a significant drawback in managing peach anthracnose nowadays. In this study, 39 isolates of C. fructicola and 41 isolates of C. siamense were collected from different locations in various provinces in China. The sensitivity of C. fructicola and C. siamense to some commonly used fungicides, i.e., carbendazim, iprodione, fluopyram, and propiconazole, was determined. All the isolates of C. fructicola collected from Guangdong province showed high resistance to carbendazim, whereas isolates collected from Guizhou province were sensitive. In C. siamense, isolates collected from Hebei province showed moderate resistance, while those from Shandong province were sensitive to carbendazim. On the other hand, all the isolates of C. fructicola and C. siamense showed high resistance to the dicarboximide (DCF) fungicide iprodione and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicide fluopyram. However, they are all sensitive to the demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicide propiconazole. Positive cross-resistance was observed between carbendazim and benomyl as they are members of the same methyl benzimidazole carbamate (MBC) group. While no correlation of sensitivity was observed between different groups of fungicides. No significant differences were found in each fitness parameter between carbendazim-resistant and sensitive isolates in both species. Molecular characterization of the β-tubulin 2 (TUB2) gene revealed that in C. fructicola, the E198A point mutation was the determinant for the high resistance to carbendazim, while the F200Y point mutation was linked with the moderate resistance to carbendazim in C. siamense. Objective: To analyze the research hot spots and frontiers of studies on of the fusion of sports and medicine (FSM) in China in recent decade via CiteSpace., Methods: Relevant publications related FSM published from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2021 were obtained from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the amount of publications, institutions and keywords using standard bibliometric indicators., Results: A total of 729 publications on FSM were identified, and 688 qualified records were included in the final analysis. Between 2012 to 2021, the number of publications showed a trend of growth, albeit with certain fluctuations. The authors of these publications were mainly from universities or colleges with sports background. The institution leading the study was the Beijing Sport University ( n = 20), the most prolific ( n =12) and most-cited (224 times) author was Guo JJ from Capital University of Physical Education Sports. The journal with most publications on FSM was Contemporary Sports Technology ( n =74). Samples of peach and plum fruits with brown rot symptoms were collected from Tibet in 2019 and 2020, and the causal agent was identified as Monilia yunnanensis , which represents the first characterization of Monilia spp. on peach and plum in Tibet. Morphological investigation showed that some conidia from naturally diseased fruits were larger than those observed in previously isolated M. yunnanensis . Some conidia of M. yunnanensis isolates from Tibet produced more than two, even up to six germ tubes from different parts of each conidium, instead of one or two germ tubes developing from the pointy sides of each conidium. The alignment of ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region sequences revealed that some isolates from Tibet displayed a mutation at the 374th position from adenine (A) to cytosine (C). Although abovementioned differences were observed between isolates from Tibet and other regions, phylogenetic analysis indicated that all of the M. yunnanensis isolates from different stone fruits and different regions in China were clustered together without obvious genetic differentiation. These results revealed that hosts and geographic environments did not play a major role in the evolution of M. yunnanensis .

Rice false smut, caused by the pathogen Ustilaginoidea virens , is a severe emerging disease in China. It affects not only the quality of rice but also yields of rice production. To make clear the effect of chemical seed treatment on the rice false smut control in fields, during 2014 to 2017, four fungicides with different modes of action were used to treat rice seeds contaminated by false smut balls. In rice-growing seasons, samples of rice tissues were taken for detection of U . virens by using a specific nested PCR method at different rice-growing stages. In addition, the occurrence of rice false smut was investigated at maturation stage. Results showed that U . virens in plant tissues decreased significantly at the seedling stage upon chemical seed treatment. Four chemical treatments decreased the detection rate significantly ( P < 0.01) compared with the water treatment, but no significant difference was observed among four chemical treatments. However, the detection rate did not decease significantly at the tillering and booting stages. Similarly, the final occurrence of rice false smut did not show significant difference between each chemical and water treatment. These results suggested that chemical seed treatment had only limited efficacy in preventing occurrence of rice false smut; application of fungicides at the booting stage or integrated use of fungicides and agricultural practices might give a better control for this disease.

Objective: To explore the status of HIV infection, time trends and related factors of MSM in Harbin from 2009 to 2018 and provide evidences for comprehensive prevention and control strategies of MSM HIV/AIDS. Methods: From April to July during 2009-2018, continuous cross-sectional studies were conducted on MSM recruited through snowball sampling. The unified questionnaire was used to collect demographic, behavioral, and serological information. The SPSS 23.0 software was used for statistical analysis, and the Joinpoint 4.8.0.1 software was applied to the annual percent change (APC) for time trends analysis using the Joinpoint regression model. Results: A total of 4 813 MSM were surveyed in Harbin from 2009 to 2018. The overall HIV antibody positive rate was 11.3 % ( 543/4 813). Joinpoint regression analysis showed that there was an increase in the HIV antibody positive rate from 2009 to 2015, while the segmentation point was in 2015 ( Z =4.2, P <0.05) but, there was a decrease from 2015 to 2018( Z =-1.3, P =0.3). The positive rate of syphilis antibody was 12.9% (621/4 813). There was a decrease in the positive rate of syphilis antibodies from 2009 to 2013 ( Z= -2.8 ,P< 0.05). There was a decrease in the positive rate of syphilis antibodies from 2013 to 2018 ( Z =-0.7, P =0.5). Results from multiple logistic aggression analysis showed that the risk factors associated with the prevalence of HIV infection including network recruitment (a OR =1.307, 95% CI : 1.057-1.617), age 30 and above (a OR =1.905, 95% CI : 1.235-2.939) and syphilis antibody positive (a OR =4.728, 95% CI : 3.751-5.961). Protective factors appeared: knowledge of HIV/AIDS (a OR =0.598, 95% CI : 0.433-0.825) and consistent use of condom during anal sex in the past six months (a OR =0.683, 95% CI : 0.550-0.850). Conclusions: The HIV antibody positive rate peaked in 2015 among MSM in Harbin from 2009 to 2018, first increased and then decreased. The positive rate of syphilis antibody showed a decreasing trend. Intervention models based on social media software, age 30 and above and syphilis antibody-positive need to be explored. It also promotes condom use and referral for syphilis among MSM.

The effectiveness of control measures to contain coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wanzhou, China was assessed. Epidemiological data were analyzed for 183 confirmed COVID-19 cases and their close contacts from five generations of transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 throughout the entire COVID-19 outbreak in Wanzhou. Approximately 67.2% and 32.8% of cases were symptomatic and asymptomatic, respectively. Asymptomatic and presymptomatic transmission accounted for 75.9% of the total recorded transmission. The reproductive number was 1.64 (95% confidence interval: 1.16-2.40) for G1-to-G2 transmission, decreasing to 0.31-0.39 in later generations, concomitant with implementation of rigorous control measures. Substantially higher infection risk was associated with contact within 5 d after the infectors had been infected, frequent contact and ≥8 h of contact duration. The spread of COVID-19 was effectively controlled in Wanzhou by breaking the transmission chain through social distancing, extensive contact tracing, mass testing and strict quarantine of close contacts.

Antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG) is a common adverse effect of this treatment, particularly with second-generation antipsychotics, and it is a major health problem around the world. We aimed to review the progress of pharmacogenetic studies on AIWG in the Chinese population to compare the results for Chinese with other ethnic populations, identify the limitations and problems of current studies, and provide future research directions in China. Both English and Chinese electronic databases were searched to identify eligible studies. We determined that > 25 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 19 genes have been investigated in association with AIWG in Chinese patients over the past few decades. HTR2C rs3813929 is the most frequently studied single-nucleotide polymorphism, and it seems to be the most strongly associated with AIWG in the Chinese population. However, many genes that have been reported to be associated with AIWG in other ethnic populations have not been included in Chinese studies. To explain the pharmacogenetic reasons for AIWG in the Chinese population, genome-wide association studies and multiple-center, standard, unified, and large samples are needed.

BACKGROUND Ultrasound with developing line may by suitable for medical personnel who are inexperienced in the use of ultrasound-guided radial artery puncture. In this trial, we assessed whether this technology could increase the success rate of radial artery puncture performed by interns. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-seven patients undergoing general anesthesia were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups: an ultrasound with developing line group and a traditional ultrasound group. All radial artery punctures were performed by interns who received theoretical explanation (including video demonstration of puncture) and on-site guidance puncture once. The primary end-point was the success rate of cannulation at the first attempt and the secondary end-point was cannulation failure rate. RESULTS The success rate of cannulation at the first attempt in ultrasound in the developing line group was significantly higher than that in the traditional ultrasound group (proportion difference: 34.21%, 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.5483 to -0.1334; P=0.0025). However, no significant between-group difference was observed with respect to failure rate (mean difference 95% CI, (-0.0084 to 0.2743; P=0.0866). The ultrasonic location time in the ultrasound with developing line group was significantly lower than that in the traditional ultrasound group (mean difference -12.4 seconds, 95% CI, 10.64 to 13.98 s; P<0.0000). CONCLUSIONS Use of ultrasound with developing line significantly improved the success rate of radial artery puncture performed by interns as compared to that with use of traditional dynamic ultrasound guidance technology.

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of hearing aid acquisition in Chinese older adults., Methods: We obtained data from a population-based survey on ear and hearing disorders, which was conducted in 4 provinces of China in 2014 to 2015. Trained examiners conducted pure tone audiometry and audiologists further ascertained for hearing loss. We relied on hearing conditions and audiologists' recommendations to identify 1503 participants who needed to wear hearing aids., Results: Among those 1503 participants, the estimated prevalence of hearing aid acquisition was 6.5% (95% confidence interval = 5.3%, 7.8%). Urban residency, having severe hearing loss, understanding hearing aid function, and receiving a hearing test in the past 12 months were associated with elevated prevalence of hearing aid acquisition. The top-3 reported reasons for not acquiring a hearing aid were not understanding its function (25.4%), not needing it (22.3%), and not being able to afford it (21.3%)., Conclusions: Hearing aid use, as a widespread rehabilitation and treatment of hearing loss, remains a big challenge in China. Apart from providing low-cost hearing aids, more efforts should focus on improving hearing knowledge and disseminating information about hearing aid function among older adults.
