The ocean is the largest active carbon reservoir on Earth. Organic carbon (OC), as the primary species of carbon sequestration in the ocean, plays an important role in the global carbon cycle through its deposition and burial. In this study, sedimentary OC data from 5796 stations, together with relevant geochemical and sedimentological parameters in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea (BYES) were used to summarize and elucidate the distribution and burial patterns of sedimentary OC, and assess carbon sink effect of sedimentary OC burial. The results show that the OC content in the sediments of the BYES ranges from 0.00% to 2.12%, with an average content of 0.47%±0.26%. OC content is significantly correlated with finegrained sediments, with an average OC content in mud areas being 39% higher than that in non-mud areas. Modern OC buried in the BYES are mainly deposited in 7 major mud areas, with a total sedimentary OC burial flux of approximately 8.20 Mt C yr−1. Among them, the burial flux of biospheric OC is 6.92 Mt C yr−1, equivalent to the OC consumption amount of silicate weathering of the 9 major river basins in the eastern China. In its natural state, the annually sequestered OC in the sediments of the eastern China seas is equivalent to 25.37 Mt of atmospheric CO2, indicating a significant carbon sink effect. The distribution and burial of terrigenous OC in the BYES are mainly influenced by the large river inputs and complex marine hydrodynamic environment, while human activities such as dam construction have significantly altered the OC burial in these coastal mud areas. Leucocytozoon parasites infect many species of avian hosts, including domestic chicken, and can inflict heavy economic loss on the poultry industry. Two major species of Leucocytozoon parasites have been reported in China, L. sabrazesi and L. caulleryi, although L. sabrazesi appears to be more widespread than L. caulleryi in southern China. The traditional method for detecting Leucocytozoon infection is microscopic examination of blood smears for the presence of mature gametocytes in circulation, which may miss infections with low parasitemia (gametocytemia) or immature gametocytes. Here we developed a PCR-based method to monitor L. sabrazesi infections at seven sites in four provinces of China after testing two PCR primer pairs based on parasite mitochondrial cytochrome b (cytb) and cytochrome c oxidase III (coxIII) genes. We compared the results of PCR detection with those of microscopic observation. As expected, the PCR assays were more sensitive than microscope examination in detecting L. sabrazesi infection and were able to detect parasite DNA after gametocytes disappeared in the blood stream. Using these methods, we investigated monthly dynamics of L. sabrazesi in chickens from a free-range farm in Xiamen, Fujian province of China, over one year. Our results showed that chickens were infected with L. sabrazesi year-round in southern China. Finally, we tested several compounds for potential treatment of Leucocytozoon infections, including primaquine, ketotifen, clomipramine hydrochloride, desipramine hydrochloride, sulfaquinoxaline, and pyrimethamine. Only primaquine had activity against L. sabrazesi gametocytes. Our results provide important information for controlling parasite transmission in southern China and disease management. Due to high productivity, periodic submersion, and rapid sedimentation rate, mangroves are important carbon sinks in tropical-subtropical coastal zones. Mangrove expansion can significantly enhance burial carbon storage in coastal zones and has been reported in many subtropical regions due to climate change in recent years. To better understand the response of carbon storage to climate change in subtropical-tropical coastal zones, it is necessary to estimate the change in burial organic carbon (OC) storage in mangroves undergoing expansion. In the Nanliu River estuary of South China, the total mangrove area has increased from 72 to 622 ha in recent decades. Based on a sedimentology study combined with historical satellite images analysis, the accumulation rate of burial OC in these mangroves is estimated to be 400–500 g‧m−2‧y−1, of which the part imported to the stratigraphy beneath the mangrove deposit layer is approximately 130 g‧m−2‧y−1. Globally, the reported OC accumulation rate is linearly correlated to the accretion rate in mangroves. The accumulation rate of mangrove burial OC estimated in this study is significantly higher than the corresponding value on this fitted curve, indicating that the OC accumulation rates may be underestimated in such mangroves because the OC imported to the lower root layer has been not been taken into account. Based on the estimated OC accumulation rate and the time-series data of the mangrove area, the increase in burial OC storage in the mangroves of the Nanliu River estuary from 1988 to 2018 is estimated at more than 35 Gg. This study provides an example of estimating soil OC storage increase in expanding mangroves, which can help us better understand the response of coastal carbon pool to climate change. Grain size and clay minerals in the surface sediment off Zhejiang Province, China, of the East China Sea were analyzed to study changes in grain size, muddy deposit boundary, and major riverine and other derived matters transport paths in the Zhejiang coastal muddy deposit since the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam and after other large-scale human projects. The results show that the sediment types are mainly silt and mud in the muddy deposit, divided based on the 10% isoline of the sand-sized component. The sources of sediment in the muddy deposit are mainly the Yangtze River and simultaneously supplies from the Qiantang Jiang, Ou Jiang, relict fine-grain matter, and hydrolyzed volcanic rocks around the Zhoushan Islands. The transport and dispersal of sediments in the study area are largely controlled by the Zhejiang–Fujian coastal current and the Taiwan Warm Current and appear seasonally. The contributions from the Ou Jiang, relict matter, local hydrolyzed matter, and the Qiantang Jiang are enlarged owing to the decline of Yangtze suspended matter and the constructions of major human projects in the Hangzhou Bay, respectively. In addition, the sediment grain size exhibits a fining trend because of the influence of the Three Gorges Dam. The boundary of the muddy deposit is relatively stable after the Three Gorges Dam impoundment north of the city of Zhoushan. In contrast, south of the city of Zhoushan the boundary of the muddy deposit lies toward the east because the sediment supply from the relict fine-grained matters resuspended by the Taiwan Warm Current east of the study area. The changes in the grain size and contributions from smaller rivers and other derived matter as well as the boundary of the muddy deposit there will probably become more pronounced in the future. Sedimentation rates and sediment budgets are important agents to understand the source-to-sink dynamics in marginal seas. As a classical representative of mega-river dominated marginal seas globally, the South China Sea (SCS) receives huge amounts of fluvial input from mega rivers covering different climate zones. Despite its well-documented prevalence, quantifying the spatial distribution of sedimentation rate and sediment budget over the entire SCS remains a challenge due to limited data availability. In this study, we employed a comprehensive approach to quantify the modern sedimentation rates and sediment budget in the SCS. This approach combined 210Pb measurements from 409 cores, AMS14C data from 112 cores, and 33 sediment trap observations. Our results show that higher sedimentation rates >0.3 cm/a mainly occur in deltas, shelf mud areas, and upper continental slope that connects the submarine canyon. In the subaqueous Mekong Delta, for example, the sedimentation rates can exceed 10 cm/a. In contrast, there is no substantial modern sedimentation in sandy and gravelly areas of the shelf due to strong erosion by a combination of waves, tides and ocean currents. We further compare these results with the eastern China seas including the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea. A similar spatial distribution of sedimentation rates can be observed in the continental shelf of the eastern China seas. The Holocene sedimentation rates in the deep-water regions of the SCS are generally <100 cm/ka. The basin floor experiences the slowest accumulation, with rates below 3 cm/ka. In contrast, sedimentation rates on the eastern island slopes range from 3 to 8 cm/ka, while the northern, western, and southern continental slopes accumulate sediment most rapidly, exceeding 25 cm/ka. Approximately 1191.1 × 106 t of fine-grained sediment is deposited annually in the continental mud areas of the SCS, with a comparable amount of 1185.4 × 106 t/a deposited on the continental shelf of the eastern China seas. The continental slope accumulates sediment at a significantly higher rate (∼161.0–239.4 × 106 t/a) compared to the deep-water basin (∼16.5–20.1 × 106 t/a) in the SCS. Most of the modern sediments (>98%) are deposited on the continental shelf and slope. In the SCS, fluvial inputs dominates modern sediment sources, contributing over 80% of the total. Coastal/seabed erosion and biogenic deposition account for approximately ∼18%, with eolian dust contributing less than <2%. Sediment accumulation and budget in the continental margins provides abundant information of source-sink processes from the land to the sea, including weathering, human activities and sedimentary environment. Here we show the distribution of mud areas, modern sedimentation rates and sediment budget in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea. Using grain size data of > 18,000 surface sediment samples and 210 Pb data from 413 sites, we identify five areas with sediments mainly composed of fine-grained fractions (mean grain size > 6 φ) and find a relatively high sedimentation rates of > 1.5 mm/yr in the mud areas. Near the Yellow and Yangtze River deltas sedimentation reaches > 95.0 mm/yr. Approximately 1185.4 × 10 6 tons of fine-grained sediment accumulate annually in the mud areas of the east China seas. Atmospheric deposition contributes < 2% (18.37 × 10 6 tons/yr), while the riverine sediment inputs account for > 75% (917 × 10 6 tons/yr). The remainder comes from all other sources including coastal erosion and resuspension of bottom sediments. In addition, ~ 45% of the fluvial sediment supply deposits on the subaerial delta, ~ 40–50% is trapped on the subaqueous delta and shelf, and the remainder < 5% escapes the shelf edge. The results will be a strong foundation for understanding of the transport, deposit and preservation of sediment and other relevant material (e.g. carbon and nutrient etc.) of terrestrial materials in the sea. A comprehensive study was performed to identify the origins of salinity and the geochemical processes governing hydrochemistry, and to distinguish the role of evaporation, mixing, and water–rock interaction from seawater intrusion (SWI) or palaeo-saltwater intrusion (PSWI) on groundwater chemistry in the coastal aquifer around the Bohai sea in China. For these purpose, geochemical and multivariate statistical methods were applied. The results indicated that the intrusion area around the Bohai sea can be divided into: (i) the palaeo-saltwater intrusion zone (including the south of Laizhou Bay, Tianjin, and Panjin on the north of Liaodong Bay), and (ii) the modern seawater intrusion zone. The analysis of selected ions (Na+/Cl− and Br−/Cl−) and isotopic compositions showed that the saltwater intrusion is the predominant factor of increasing salinity in groundwater, followed by water–rock interaction (e.g. mineral weathering and ion exchange), and evaporation. Sources of specific ions (Ca and F) are dominated by mineral weathering-dissolution rather than the saltwater intrusion. Furthermore, anthropogenic activities are the dominant cause of groundwater nitrate pollution in the coastal area around Bohai sea. This type of pollution is most serious in Liaodong Bay due to the industrial waste, fertilizers, pesticides, and domestic sewage. It is followed by pollution in Qinhuangdao due to agricultural and domestic factors, and pollution in Laizhou Bay due to domestic sewage. The source of high fluorine in groundwater is the dissolution of fluorine-containing minerals caused by saltwater intrusion. This study investigates Holocene sedimentary evolution and hypoxia development using borehole cores CJK06 and CJK09, in combination with other published core data. Based on lithology and microfossil (benthic foraminifera) characteristics, seven types of sedimentary facies were identified from the base upward: river, tidal flat, tide-influenced river, transgressive lag, estuary, inner-shelf, and prodelta. Isochronous correlation among the cores was established relying on accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates. Facies succession indicates that a weak progradation occurred in coastal environments (12–10 ka BP) due to the Younger Dryas-induced deceleration of sea-level rise; rapid deposition locally occurred in the southern marginal area of tide-dominated estuary environments (10–8 ka BP), likely due to the junction of the Yangtze and Qiantangjiang River currents; and marine current-induced fluid mudflows prevailed in the shallow marine environments (8–1 ka BP), with the cooling climates of 5–1 ka BP. Furthermore, prodelta and shallow marine environments co-occurred with an uneven progradation of the delta within the last 1 ka, while deposition occurred just inside the more southern, delta-influenced area. The occurrence of euryhaline benthic foraminifera suggests that an enhanced freshwater discharge of the mid-Holocene (8–5 ka BP) was followed by a sharp decline in the late Holocene (5–1 ka BP) with climate change. The occurrence of cold-water benthic foraminifera indicates a severe cold-water condition during the mid-Holocene due to the intrusion of upwelling currents triggered by the propelling force of warm currents and summer monsoon winds. In addition, the occurrence of low-oxygen foraminiferal assemblages reveals that hypoxia has developed since 10 ka BP in stages consistent with the sedimentary evolution: localized hypoxia formation coincident with the southern depocenter during the early Holocene (10–8 ka BP); severe hypoxia with enhanced freshwater discharge and upwelling current intrusion during the mid-Holocene; and weakened hypoxia of the late Holocene, mainly due to the sharp decline in freshwater discharge. Within 1 ka BP, freshwater discharge from the approaching river mouth and increased nutrient inputs from enhanced human activities on land have contributed to the prevalence of hypoxia, especially in the southern deltaic area. The heavy metal contents (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, and As) of 88 surface sediment samples from the western Sunda Shelf were analyzed to determine their spatial distribution patterns and contamination status. The results demonstrated that high enrichment regions of heavy metals were focused in the Kelantan, Pahang, and Ambat river estuaries, and deep water regions of the study area. These high enrichment regions were mainly controlled by riverine inputs and their hydrodynamic conditions. The enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I geo ), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were used to assess heavy metal accumulation. The results indicated that the study area was not significantly contaminated overall at the time of the study; however, Cd, As, and Hg were at levels corresponding to moderate contamination at many stations located in the Pahang River estuary, Kelantan River estuary, and north-eastern region of the study area, primarily because of anthropogenic activities., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Anthropogenic activities have increased lead (Pb) emissions and impacted their spatiotemporal distributions in coastal seas. To quantify the increasing variability of Pb and identify the specific origins and their corresponding magnitudes, Pb and Pb isotopes are investigated in a well-placed sediment core covering the period of 1928-2008 in the Central Yellow Sea Mud (CYSM). The concentration of Pb varied from 27.17 μg/g to 37.30 μg/g upwardly along the core, with pronounced anthropogenic disturbance since the late 1960s. The Pb input history of the CYSM experienced five stages according to industrialization levels and Pb contamination, with relative pristine stages from 1928 to 1969 and human activity-impacted stages from 1969 to 2008. The 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratio demonstrated an overall decreasing profile while the 208 Pb/ 206 Pb ratio displayed the reverse trend upwardly along the core, possibly due to the atmospheric delivery of anthropogenic Pb emissions from northern China. Furthermore, 208 Pb/ 206 Pb vs. 206 Pb/ 207 Pb shows certain linearity between natural sediment sources and anthropogenic emissions of Pb (atmospheric deposition); thus, atmospheric inputs account for 34-43% of the Pb in the sediment since Pb enrichment using the two-endmember mixing model. Moreover, the steep decrease in 206 Pb/ 207 Pb and rapid increase in 208 Pb/ 206 Pb since the 1970s suggest the introduction of leaded gasoline and the increasing proportionate consumption of gasoline relative to total energy consumption. The continuously decreasing 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratio and increasing 208 Pb/ 206 Pb ratio since 2000 are the combined results of coal consumption, nonferrous smelting, and residual Pb contamination from leaded gasoline, which is quite distinctive from cases in North America and Europe. The relatively high 206 Pb/ 207 Pb and low 208 Pb/ 206 Pb ratios before 1969 represent the natural Pb isotopic signatures. The present study aims to examine the distribution, sources and potential risks of toxic metals in the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. We found Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg exhibited similar spatial distribution pattern. Influenced by the Ganges-Brahmaputra River and the Karnafuli River, there were higher concentrations of these metals associated with the finer sediment and higher TOC in the northeastern portion of the study area. Moreover, coal transportation was assumed to account for the distinctive spatial distribution of As with higher concentration down the Port of Chittagong in the eastern boundary. Chemical-screening level assessment demonstrated the majority of the metals exceeded the threshold effect values, indicating certain possibility of adverse effect. The concentrations of Ni were higher than the possible hazardous values, suggesting high possibility of harmful consequences. A new species of monorchiid trematode, Leiomonorchis zhanjiangensis n. sp. (Trematoda: Monorchiidae), is described from the intestine of marine fish Secutor ruconius (Hamilton-Buchanan) (Leiognathidae) from Zhanjiang (21°2'N, 110°3'E), Guangdong Province, China. The new species is distinguished from all known species of the genus, mainly by the configuration of vitelline follicles and the shape of excretory bladder (saccular in the new species vs. tubular in the others). According to Madhavi's opinion, Caballerotrematoides secundus Ahmad, 1981 was transferred from Caballerotrematoides Madhavi, 1977 into Leiomonorchis Mamaev, 1970 as L. secundus (Ahmad, 1981) n. comb.
