The association between short-term ambient air pollution (AAP) exposure and blood lipids is inconsistent across populations. This study aimed to investigate the modifying effects of fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels on the associations between short-term AAP exposure and blood lipids in 110,637 male participants from Beijing, China. The results showed that FBG modified the association between short-term AAP exposure and blood lipids, especially low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). In the hyperglycemia group, a 10-μg/m3 increase in particles with diameters ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particles with diameters ≤ 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), or a 1-mg/m3 increase in carbon monoxide (CO) was associated with a 0.454%, 0.305%, 1.507%, 0.872%, or 3.961% increase in LDL-C, respectively. In the nonhyperglycemic group, short-term increases in air pollutants were even associated with small decreases in LDL-C. The findings demonstrate that lipids in hyperglycemic individuals are more vulnerable to short-term AAP exposure than those in normal populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The American Heart Association recently released an updated algorithm for evaluating cardiovascular health—Life's Essential 8 (LE8). However, the associations between changes in LE8 score over time and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remain unclear. Methods We investigated associations between 6-year changes (2006–12) in LE8 score and risk of subsequent CVD events (2012–20) among 53 363 Chinese men and women from the Kailuan Study, who were free from CVD in 2012. The LE8 score was calculated based on eight components: diet quality, physical activity, smoking status, sleep health, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose and blood pressure. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional-hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results We documented 4281 incident CVD cases during a median of 7.7 years of follow-up. Compared with participants whose LE8 scores remained stable in a 6-year period, those with the large increases of LE8 score over the 6-year period had a lower risk of CVD, heart disease and stroke in the subsequent 8 years [HRs and 95% CIs: 0.67 (0.64, 0.70) for CVD, 0.65 (0.61, 0.69) for heart disease, 0.71 (0.67, 0.76) for stroke, all P trend < 0.001]. Conversely, those with the large decreases of LE8 score had 47%, 51% and 41% higher risk for CVD, heart disease and stroke, respectively. These associations were consistent across the subgroups stratified by risk factors. Background: Unfavourable lipid and glucose levels may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, there is a lack of prospective studies on the relationship between lipid profiles, lipid ratios and GDM during pregnancy. Aims: To prospectively investigate the relationship between lipid profile and lipid ratios in early and mid-pregnancy and their pattern of change from early to mid-pregnancy and the risk of GDM. Methods: This nested case-control study was based on maternal and child healthcare hospitals from Fujian Province, China. We included pregnant women who delivered in the hospital from January 2021 to June 2023. Lipid profiles (TC, TG, ApoA1, ApoB, HDL-c, LDL-c) and fasting glucose were measured before 14 weeks of gestation and between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation, and lipid ratios (triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c and TC/HDL-c) was constructed. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between lipid profile, lipid ratios and GDM. Results: Of 1586 pregnant women, 741 were diagnosed with GDM. After adjusting for potential confounders, TG, ApoA1, ApoB, LDL-c, triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c, and TC/HDL-c in early pregnancy were positively associated with the risk of GDM (odds ratios [95% CI] for extreme interquartile comparisons were 2.040 (1.468–2.843), 1.506 (1.091–2.082), 1.529 (1.110–2.107), 1.504 (1.086–2.086), 1.952 (1.398–2.731), 2.127 (1.526–2.971), and 2.370 (1.700-3.312), all trend P < 0.05). HDL-c was negatively associated with the risk of GDM (0.639: 0.459–0.889, trend P all less than 0.05). Similarly, in mid-pregnancy, lower levels of HDL-c, higher levels of triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c ratio, and TC/HDL-c ratio were associated with increased risk of GDM (all trends P < 0.05). Stably high levels (both ≥ median for early and mid-pregnancy) of triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c and TC/HDL-c were associated with increased risk of GDM (OR [95% CI]: 2.369 (1.438–3.940), 1.588 (1.077–2.341), 1.921 (1.309–2.829), respectively). The opposite was true for HDL-c, where stable high levels were negatively associated with GDM risk (OR [95% CI]: 0.599 (0.405–0.883)). Conclusion: Increases in triglyceride glucose index, TG/HDL-c ratio, and TC/HDL-c ratio in early and mid-pregnancy, as well as their stable high levels from early to mid-pregnancy, are associated with a higher risk of GDM. In contrast, increased levels of HDL-c, both in early and mid-pregnancy, and their stable high levels from early to mid-pregnancy were associated with a lower risk of GDM. Background: Most studies have focused on comparing blood lipid biomarkers between Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal controls (NC). However, further research is necessary to explore the impact of blood lipid levels on motor and cognitive function, as well as the progression of motor dysfunction and cognitive decline over time. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between blood lipid biomarkers and these indicators in individuals with PD. Methods: The cohort study enrolled 157 PD patients and 146 NC from the Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from September 2017 to September 2019. Serum lipid fractions were detected in fasting serum samples. PD patients were followed up at 2 ± 0.6 years for clinical assessment. Results: PD patients exhibited lower serum triglyceride (TG) levels as compared to NC (P = 0.008). PD male patients exhibited lower serum lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL‐C) and total cholesterol (TC) levels than female patients (LDL‐C: P = 0.034; TC: P = 0.019). Serum TG levels correlated significantly with Unified PD Rating Scale III, Hoehn and Yahr stage and Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores in PD patients. Additionally, serum TG levels were associated with follow‐up motor function decline and cognitive decline in adjusted regression models in PD patients. Conclusions: To summarise, the study findings suggest that decreased serum TG levels are significantly associated with greater motor dysfunction, cognitive dysfunction and the greater deterioration of the two indicators. BACKGROUND: Evidence suggested that abiotic airborne exposures may be associated with changes in body composition. However, more evidence is needed to identify key pollutants linked to adverse health effects and their underlying biomolecular mechanisms, particularly in sensitive older adults. OBJECTIVES: Our research aimed to systematically assess the relationship between abiotic airborne exposures and changes in body composition among healthy older adults, as well as the potential mediating mechanisms through the serum lipidome. METHODS: From September 2018 to January 2019, we conducted a monthly survey among 76 healthy adults (60–69 years old) in the China Biomarkers of Air Pollutant Exposure (BAPE) study, measuring their personal exposures to 632 abiotic airborne pollutions using MicroPEM and the Fresh Air wristband, 18 body composition indicators from the InBody 770 device, and lipidomics from venous blood samples. We used an exposome-wide association study (ExWAS) and deletion/substitution/addition (DSA) model to unravel complex associations between exposure to contaminant mixtures and body composition, a Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model to assess the overall effect of key exposures on body composition, and mediation analysis to identify lipid intermediators. RESULTS: The ExWAS and DSA model identified that 2,4,5-T methyl ester (2,4,5-TME), 9,10-Anthracenedione (ATQ), 4b,8-dimethyl-2-isopropylphenanthrene, and 4b,5,6,7,8,8a,9,10-octahydro-(DMIP) were associated with increased body fat mass (BFM), fat mass indicators (FMI), percent body fat (PBF), and visceral fat area (VFA) in healthy older adults [Bonferroni-Hochberg false discovery rate (FDRBH)<0.05]. The BKMR model demonstrated a positive correlation between contaminants (anthracene, ATQ, copaene, di-epi-a-cedrene, and DMIP) with VFA. Mediation analysis revealed that phosphatidylcholine [PC, PC(16:1e/18:1), PC(16:2e/18:0)] and sphingolipid [SM, SM(d18:2/24:1)] mediated a significant portion, ranging from 12.27% to 26.03% (푝-value <0.05), of the observed increase in VFA. DISCUSSION: Based on the evidence from multiple model results, ATQ and DMIP were statistically significantly associated with the increased VFA levels of healthy older adults, potentially regulated through lipid intermediators. These findings may have important implications for identifying potentially harmful environmental chemicals and developing targeted strategies for the control and prevention of chronic diseases in the future, particularly as the global population is rapidly aging. BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated the benefits of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) in reducing cardiovascular risk. However, its role in subclinical atherosclerosis (SA) progression remains unclear. We aim to examine the association of CVH, estimated by the American Heart Association's new Life's Essential 8 (LE8), with the progression of SA. METHODS This prospective cohort study was conducted among 972 asymptomatic Chinese participants and followed up for 5.7 years. The LE8 score (range, 0–100) consisted of blood pressure, lipids, glucose, body mass index, smoking status, diet health, physical activity and sleep health was evaluated in 1998 and 2008–2009. Progression of SA was determined by carotid plaque and coronary artery calcification (CAC) in 2008–2009 and 2013–2014. Log-binomial regression model was used to estimate the association of LE8 score with SA progression. RESULTS Each 10 points increment in LE8 score was associated with 15.2% (RR: 0.848, 95% CI: 0.797–0.902), 17.7% (RR: 0.823, 95% CI: 0.766–0.884) and 12.0% (RR: 0.880, 95% CI: 0.845–0.916) lower risks of carotid plaque, CAC and overall SA progression, respectively. Compared with participants with non-ideal CVH at both visits, the participants with ideal CVH at both visits had 39.1% (RR: 0.609, 95% CI: 0.494–0.752), 41.0% (RR: 0.590, 95% CI: 0.456–0.764) and 29.7% (RR: 0.703, 95% CI: 0.598–0.825) lower risks of carotid plaque, CAC and overall SA progression, respectively. The hydrogen isotope ratio (δ2H) of lipid biomarkers from phytoplankton and terrestrial plants were measured in surface sediments from Chinese marginal seas (CMS), in order to evaluate processes affecting their spatial distribution, and by extension, the controls on organic carbon cycling in these dynamic marginal seas. The dinoflagellate sterol dinosterol and the microalgal sterol brassicasterol had low δ2H values (<−300%) near the mouth of the Yangtze River. Near the mouth of the Yellow River, dinosterol again had low δ2H values but brassicasterol had intermediate (−292 to −281%) δ2H values. This discrepancy in the δ2H values of two phytoplankton sterols may be explained by the timing of dinoflagellate production relative to that of brassicasterol producers (e.g., diatoms). The δ2H values of C16:0 fatty acid, synthesized by all organisms, had intermediate δ2H values (−199 to −178%) near the Yangtze River and lowest δ2H C16:0 values (−216 to −206%) occurred near the old Yellow River delta. The lowest δ2H C28:0 values (<−184%) occurred adjacent to rivers, suggesting that leaf‐wax lipids produced on the loess plateau, which are enriched in 2H, may contribute less to the nearshore environment than the offshore regions. Higher δ2H C28:0 values offshore may be explained by a larger contribution of leaf wax fatty acids from aerosols relative to river‐borne suspended particles. Lipid biomarker δ2H fingerprinting thus provides a new tool for deciphering the controls on organic carbon cycling and accumulation in the dynamic CMS. Plain Language Summary: Most carbon burial in the ocean occurs in continental shelf sediments even though they comprise a small fraction of the ocean area. Almost 10 percent of this nearshore carbon burial occurs in the Chinese marginal seas where the Yellow River and Yangtze Rivers discharge their massive sediment loads. This study applies a new tool, hydrogen isotope ratios in lipid biomarkers, to unravel the inner workings of the carbon cycle in the coastal seas of China. By focusing on the hydrogen bonded to carbon it is possible to determine things like where on land organic carbon was produced, where in the ocean marine organic carbon was produced, and the environmental conditions under which that organic material was synthesized. It was found that the dinoflagellate sterol dinosterol and the microalgal sterol brassicasterol had low δ2H values near the mouth of the Yangtze River where freshwater runoff with low δ2H values. The δ2H values of the C28:0 leaf‐wax fatty acid from terrestrial plants were higher than for the C16:0, owing to the isotopic enrichment of leaf water during evapotranspiration. The highest δ2H values for C28:0 occurred offshore, suggesting that leaf wax lipids produced on the loess plateau contribute substantially to the offshore region. The potential of diatoms as aquatic bait, attribute to their abundance in highly unsaturated fatty acids, has been extensively studied. Temperature plays a crucial role in the synthesis of these fatty acids. This study specifically investigated the impact of temperature on the growth, total lipid content, and fatty acid composition of Skeletonema dohrnii, a planktonic diatom commonly associated with red tides andwater blooms in China. The aim is to evaluate its suitability as an aquatic bait and provide insights for large-scale factory farming. Results indicated that the highest biomass and maximum growth rate occurred at 28°C, with no significant deviation from the control group at 25°C. At 28°C and 15°C, there was a significant increase in the total lipid content and the total fatty acid content, with a more pronounced effect at 15°C. At 28°C, EPA and DHA content measured at 0.97 ± 0.01 mg.DW.L-1 and 0.264 ± 0.01 mg.DW.L-1 respectively, surpass those at 15°C due to lower biomass. Conversely, at 15°C, substantial synthesis of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, with EPA constituting up to 32.24 ± 0.24% of the total fatty acids, is observed. Modulating the temperature could optimize the utilization of S. dohrnii as an aquatic feed source. Objective: The association between intestinalmicrobiota and lipids has garnered significant scholarly interest. This study analyzes pertinent literature on intestinal microbiota and lipids to offer scientific guidance for future advancements and research directions. Methods: Articles focusing on intestinal microbiota and lipids were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Following a rigorous screening process, 12,693 articles were included in the study. The collected data was processed comprehensively and visually analyzed using various academic tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R software, and Scimago Graphica. Results: The field of intestinal microbiota and its relationship with major lipids has witnessed a significant surge in scholarly attention, as indicated by the upward trend observed in related articles. Among countries, China had emerged as the leading contributor in publication output, with Chinese Acad Sci being the most prolific institution in this field. Notably, Nutrients and Nature were the prominent journals that published many articles and garnered the highest number of co-citations. Scholars have widely recognized Patrice D Cani's notable contributions in this field. Current research endeavors have focused on obesity, insulin resistance, metabolism, growth performance, the gut-brain axis, and others. Conclusions: Our analysis identified four primary research trends: "biochemical pathways," "exploration of diseases," "intervention and effect," and "health and diet." Purpose: As lifestyle changes, there is an increasing number of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in China. The present study aimed to investigate the predictive value of the lipid accumulation product (LAP) for T2DM in Chinese elderlies over 65 years. Methods: The present cross-sectional study recruited 2,092 adults from communities of Pudong New Area of Shanghai. Questionnaires were filled and anthropometric and laboratory examinations were completed by all participants. The predictive value of different risk factors for T2DM was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC). Results: LAP was found to be closely related to T2DM (adjusted OR: 0.613, 95% CI: 0.581–0.645). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), LAP, and urea nigrogen (UN) were associated with T2DM in females, whereas FPG, LAP, neck circumference (NC) were associated with T2DM in males. When the cut-off value was 33.8, LAP displayed the optimal predictive performance. A gender difference was observed with an LAP of 37.95 demonstrating the best predictive value in males (AUC = 0.604, 95% CI: 0.577–0.652) and 60.2 in females (AUC = 0.617, 95% CI: 0.574–0.660), respectively. Conclusion: LAP is more significantly associated with the risk of T2DM in elderlies than FPG, UN or NC, and it serves as a strong predictor of T2DM. However, this is impacted by FPG and neck circumference to a certain extent. Future large-scale studies are needed to confirm its efficacy in predicting diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interactive effects of obesity and physical inactivity on lipid metabolism and prevalent dyslipidemia are scarcely reported in rural regions. 39029 subjects were obtained from the Henan Rural Cohort, and their metabolic equivalents (METs) of physical activity (PA) were computed. Independent associations of the obesity indices and PA with either lipid indices or prevalent dyslipidemia were analyzed by generalized linear models, and additive effects of obesity and PA on prevalent dyslipidemia were further quantified. Each obesity index was positively associated with total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein or prevalent dyslipidemia but negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein, whereas the opposite association of PA with either each lipid index or prevalent dyslipidemia was observed. Joint association of PA and each obesity index with each lipid index and prevalent dyslipidemia was observed. Purpose: Nitrogen (N) enrichment can affect the composition and stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) pools by altering vegetation and soil properties. However, the response of plant-derived carbon components in soil to different N addition levels is unclear. We investigated the changes and potential driving processes of plant-derived carbon components (especially lignins and lipids) in meadow grassland soils under long-term N addition in eastern Inner Mongolia, China. Materials and methods: Biomarker technology was utilised to analyse changes in plant-derived carbon components (C>20 free lipids, bound lipids, and lignin phenols) in soil under different N addition levels, including changes in soil chemical properties, enzyme activity, plant biomass, and diversity under N addition, as well as the specific pathways involved. Results and discussion: We found that high levels of N addition significantly reduced the concentration of soil lignin phenols whereas increased the accumulation of lipids (free and bound lipids). Compared with changes in plant biomass and diversity, soil chemical properties and enzyme activity play a more significant role in regulating the accumulation and degradation of plant-derived carbon. Structural equation modelling (SEM) showed that decreases in lignin phenol concentration were related to specific biochemical decomposition processes (increased polyphenol oxidase activity and decreased C/N). The increase in lipids associated with the protective effects of minerals mediated by pH. Conclusions: In general, plant-derived carbon components showed inconsistent responses to N addition, lignin phenol concentration decreased and lipid concentration increased, which was mainly related to the change of soil biochemical properties. Plant-derived carbon components only showed significant changes under high N addition levels. Furthermore, our research indicates that SOC sequestration and functioning are highly dependent on soil biochemical properties, which weakens the influence of changes in plant carbon input on soil carbon storage. Background & aims: Metabolic disease prevalence has increased in many regions, and is closely associated with dyslipidemia. Rapid growth refers to a significant increase in growth velocity above the normal range, particularly in infants and children, and is highly prevalent in congenital deficiency infants. But the association between dyslipidemia and rapid growth remains controversial. We performed this meta-analysis to investigate the lipid profile in subjects with and without postnatal rapid growth, and to determine what are the confounding factors. Methods: Medline, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Chinese citation database and WANFANG database were searched (last search in May 2021). Publication bias was examined by constructing funnel plots, Egger's linear regression test and Begg's rank correlation test. Results: The fixed effects model would be adopted if I2 is less than 25%, otherwise random effects model would be used. There were 11 articles involved with a total of 1148 participants (539 boys and 609 girls, mean age=7.4 years). Pooled analysis found that rapid growth was negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (weighted mean difference=-0.068, 95%CI [-0.117,-0.020]), but not associated with triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Stratified analysis suggested that increased TG were found in rapid growth subjects from developing countries. Higher TC was observed for rapid growth participants of follow-up age =8 years old, rapid growth duration =2 years, preterm, low birth weight, and from developing countries. But decreased TC was observed in small for gestational age (SGA) rapid growth subjects. Decreased LDL-C had been documented in rapid growth subjects of follow-up age >8 years old, from developed countries, and SGA. At last, rapid growth groups had lower HDL-C in infants of rapid growth duration >2 years and from developed countries. Conclusion: Rapid growth is associated with lipid profiles, particularly during early childhood, and this relationship is influenced by factors such as the duration of growth, the level of national development, and birth weight. These findings are significant for the development of strategies to prevent metabolic diseases. Background and Aims Pinus massoniana: Lamb. is an important conifer forestry species in south China, but soil fertility has declined over time in monoculture plantations. Knowledge about how P. massoniana uses phosphorus (P) by distributing it among five biochemical fractions and how intercropping with broadleaf Castanopsis hystrix alters that pattern may inform long-term plantation management. Methods: We studied a single P. massoniana plantation that was split in half into a monoculture and a P. massoniana / C. hystrix intercropped plantation 25 years after establishment. We measured photosynthesis and leaf concentrations of total P, P allocated to five chemical fractions and total nitrogen (N). We also measured soil N concentrations. Results: Intercropping C. hystrix with 25-year-old P. massoniana for a further 34 years had no significant impact on P. massoniana total stem volume, although intercropped P. massoniana trees were 5 m taller. Intercropping with C. hystrix increased timber biomass due to the additional C. hystrix stems. Growth of C. hystrix was likely more limited by P than that of P. massoniana in both plantations. Total P concentration and its allocation among fractions declined with increasing leaf age, but differed in the two species. Leaf P-resorption efficiency in intercropped P. massoniana was 79%, which was about 15% greater than that in P. massoniana monoculture and in the intercropped C. hystrix. The greater P-resorption efficiency in intercropped P. massoniana than in monoculture was due to greater mobilization of P from all fractions, except phospholipids. Bulk soil N concentration was 50% greater in the intercropped plantation than in monoculture. Conclusion: Adding C. hystrix to an P. massoniana plantation was effective at increasing wood yield without compromising productivity of P. massoniana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to clarify whether blood lipid profiles are indicators of prognosis in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods: This retrospective study included 512 T1/2N0M0 HNSCC patients. The correlation between blood lipid profiles and progression‐free survival (PFS) and disease‐specific survival (DSS) was analyzed by multivariate analysis. The data from TCGA was also analyzed to investigate the expression levels and prognostic values of different lipoprotein receptors essential for specific lipid uptake. Results: A high level of low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) indicated better PFS and DSS, and a low level of apolipoprotein A‐I (Apo A‐I) indicated better PFS, while a high level of apolipoprotein B (Apo B) indicated poorer PFS and DSS. The Apo A‐I receptor gene SCARB1 was upregulated and associated with poor survival in HNSCC patients. Activation of SCARB1 was implicated in a series of tumor‐promoting pathways. There was no significant correlation between the expression of LDL‐C and Apo B‐related receptors and prognosis. Conclusion: A high level of LDL‐C and a low level of Apo A‐I are protective factors for HNSCC, while a high level of Apo B is a risk factor. Tomato is the vegetable with the largest greenhouse area in China, and low temperature is one of the main factors affecting tomato growth, yield, and quality. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays an important role in regulating plant chilling tolerance, but its downstream cascade reaction and mechanism remain unclear. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK/MPKs) are closely related to a variety of signaling substances in stress signal transmission. However, whether H2S is related to the MPK cascade pathway in response to low-temperature stress is rarely reported. In this study, NaHS treatment significantly decreased the electrolyte leakage (EL), superoxide anion (O2−) production rate, and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content of seedlings at low temperatures. In addition, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were obviously increased; and the photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) was enhanced with treatment with NaHS, indicating that NaHS improved the seedlings' cold tolerance by alleviating the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage. However, H2S scavenger hypotaurine (HT) treatment showed the opposite effect. We found that H2S content, L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD) activity, and mRNA expression were increased by chilling stress but reduced by MPK inhibitor PD98059; PD98059 reversed the alleviating effect of H2S via increasing the EL and H2O2 contents. The expression levels of MPK1–MPK7 at low temperatures showed that SlMPK4 was significantly induced by exogenous NaHS and showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, while the expression level of SlMPK4 in HT-treated seedlings was lower than that of the control. After SlMPK4 was silenced by virus-induced gene silencing, the H2S-induced upregulation of C-repeat-Binding Factor (CBF1), inducer of CBF expression 1 (ICE1), respiratory burst oxidase homologs (RBOH1, RBOH2) at low temperatures disappeared, and tomato cold tolerance decreased. In conclusion, H2S improves the cold tolerance of tomato plants by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and membrane lipid peroxidation. The Annual Report on Cardiovascular Health and Diseases in China (2022) intricate landscape of cardiovascular health in China. This section dissects cardiovascular risk factors in China which including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, metabolic syndrome and air pollution. Hypertension prevalence has steadily increased in China, with efforts to control it facing challenges in achieving optimal rates, especially in rural areas. Interventions like salt substitutes and intensive blood pressure control show promise but need improvement. Abnormal lipid levels, indicative of dyslipidemia, have risen significantly, posing a risk for cardiovascular diseases. Despite efforts, many patients struggle to achieve target lipid levels, necessitating improved treatment strategies. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus affect millions of adults in China, with long-term complications adding to the disease burden. Early intervention and effective management are crucial to mitigate its impact. Prevalent among older adults, chronic kidney disease is associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, necessitating comprehensive management approaches. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of risk factors, has increased in both adults and adolescents, calling for lifestyle modifications and public health interventions. Ambient and household air pollution remain significant environmental risk factors, despite some improvements in air quality. Objective: Hypertension refers to the persistent elevation of blood pressure above the established normal range, resulting in increased pressure exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels during its circulation. Recent studies have identified significant associations between obesity and lipid-related indices, as well as hypertension. Nevertheless, these studies have yet to comprehensively examine the correlation between the two variables. Our objective is to identify the fat and lipid-related indices that have the strongest correlation with hypertension. Method: There was a total of 9488 elderly and middle-aged Chinese citizens who participated in this investigation. The participants in this research were separated into distinct gender cohorts. The participants were classified into normal and hypertensive categories according to their gender, with hypertension defined as a blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher, or a history of hypertension. Through the utilization of binary logistic regression analyses and the receiver operator curve (ROC), the optimal among fourteen indicators associated with obesity and lipids were identified. Results: After adjusting for variables, statistical analysis showed that all 14 measures of obesity and lipid were risk factors for hypertension. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis reveals that the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) has the highest degree of relationship to hypertension. Simultaneously, a statistically significant association between hypertension and these 14 variables was observed in both males and females. Conclusion: There was a significant independent association between various parameters related to obesity and lipid-related index and the presence of hypertension, indicating that these factors can be considered risk factors for hypertension. CVAI and WHtR (waist height ratio) can be used to screen the high-risk groups of hypertensions in middle-aged and elderly people in China, and then take individualized health care measures to reduce the harm of hypertension. Simple Summary: The production of artificially farmed bullfrogs in China is limited by the low metamorphosis rate of tadpoles. This study investigated the effects of different doses (0 g/kg, 1.5 g/kg, 3 g/kg, 4.5 g/kg, and 6 g/kg) of thyroid powder added to the diets on the metamorphosis and growth of bullfrog tadpoles. The results showed that 4.5 g/kg of thyroid powder could significantly increase the metamorphosis rate and weight gain rate of tadpoles, while adding 6 g/kg of thyroid powder could increase the average weight of tadpoles during metamorphosis. In addition, both doses of thyroid powder could promote the fat breakdown metabolism of tadpoles and alter the intestinal microbiota composition (increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria, especially Akkermansia). In summary, appropriate doses of thyroid powder could promote the metamorphosis and growth of tadpoles, and might be used to solve the problem of the low metamorphosis rate of bullfrogs. A low metamorphosis rate of amphibian larvae, commonly known as tadpoles, limits the farming production of bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeiana). This study aimed to examine the effects of processed thyroid powder as a feed additive on tadpole metamorphosis, lipid metabolism, and gut microbiota. Five groups of tadpoles were fed with diets containing 0 g/kg (TH0), 1.5 g/kg (TH1.5), 3 g/kg (TH3), 4.5 g/kg (TH4.5), and 6 g/kg (TH6) thyroid powder for 70 days. The results showed that TH increased the average weight of tadpoles during metamorphosis, with the TH6 group having the highest values. The TH4.5 group had the highest metamorphosis rate (p < 0.05). Biochemical tests and Oil Red O staining showed that the lipid (triglyceride) content in the liver decreased after TH supplementation, especially at doses higher than 1.5 g/kg. RT-qPCR revealed that TH at doses higher than 4.5 g/kg significantly up-regulated the transcriptional expression of the pparα, accb, fas, fadd6, acadl, and lcat genes, which are related to lipid metabolism (p < 0.05). These results showed that TH seems to simultaneously promote the synthesis and decomposition of lipid and fatty acids, but ultimately show a decrease in lipids. As for the gut microbiota, it is noteworthy that Verrucomicrobia increased significantly in the TH4.5 and TH6 groups, and the Akkermansia (classified as Verrucomicrobia) was the corresponding genus, which is related to lipid metabolism. Specifically, the metabolic pathways of the gut microbiota were mainly enriched in metabolic-related functions (such as lipid metabolism), and there were significant differences in metabolic and immune pathways between the TH4.5 and TH0 groups (p < 0.05). In summary, TH may enhance lipid metabolism by modulating the gut microbiota (especially Akkermansia), thereby promoting the growth of tadpoles. Background and objectives: Cumulative lipid profile burden is designed to dynamically measure lipid accumulation, and its effect on hypertension has been poorly studied. Our main purpose was to investigate the effect of cumulative lipid profile burden on the incidence of essential hypertension (EH) and to investigate whether cumulative lipid burden mediates the pathogenesis of the effects of diet and obesity on EH. Subjects and methods: A total of 1295 participants were included in the study, which started in 2017. The average follow-up time was 2.98 years. A total of 240 EH patients occurred during the follow-up period. Results: The HR (95% CI) of the highest quartile in cumulative Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) burden were 1.747 (1.145 - 2.664), 1.502 (1.038 - 2.173), 0.615 (0.413 - 0.917) for incidence of EH respectively, compared to the respective reference groups. Participants with EH consumed more red meat and refined grains, and red meat was positively associated with cumulative TC burden. BMI and Waist-To-Height Ratio (WHtR) increased the incidence of EH, and obesity was positively correlated with cumulative TG burden. Mediating analysis showed that cumulative TG had a partial mediating effect in the causal relationship between obesity and EH, and Mendelian randomization (MR) also proved this result. BACKGROUND The optimal apolipoprotein or lipid measures for identifying statin-treated patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) at residual cardiovascular risk remain controversial. This study aimed to compare the predictive powers of apolipoprotein B (apoB), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apoB/apolipoprotein A-1 (apoA-1) and non-HDL-C/HDL-C for myocardial infarction (MI) in CAD patients treated with statins in the setting of secondary prevention. METHODS The study included 9191 statin-treated CAD patients with a five-year median follow-up. All measures were analyzed as continuous variables and concordance/discordance groups by medians. The hazard ratio (HR) with 95% CI was estimated by Cox proportional hazards regression. Patients were classified by the clinical presentation of CAD for further analysis. RESULTS The high-apoB-low-LDL-C and the high-non-HDL-C-low-LDL-C categories yielded HR of 1.40 (95% CI: 1.04-1.88) and 1.51 (95% CI: 1.07-2.13) for MI, respectively, whereas discordant high LDL-C with low apoB or non-HDL-C was not associated with the risk of MI. No association of MI with discordant apoB versus non-HDL-C, apoB/apoA-1 versus apoB, non-HDL-C/HDL-C versus non-HDL-C, or apoB/apoA-1 versus non-HDL-C/HDL-C was observed. Similar patterns were found in patients with acute coronary syndrome. In contrast, no association was observed between any concordance/discordance category and the risk of MI in patients with chronic coronary syndrome. CONCLUSIONS ApoB and non-HDL-C better predict MI in statin-treated CAD patients than LDL-C, especially in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Objective A nontargeted metabolomics approach was established to characterize serum metabolic profile in type 3c diabetes mellitus (T3cDM) secondary to chronic pancreatitis and compare with T2DM. Methods Forty patients were recruited for metabolite analysis based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Cluster heatmap and KEGG metabolic pathway enrichment analysis were used to analyze the specific and differential metabolites. The receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) were generated and correlation analysis with clinical data was conducted. Results Metabolites including sphingosine, lipids, carnitine, bile acid, and hippuric acid were found to be different between T2DM and T3cDM, mainly enriched in bile acid biosynthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and sphingolipid metabolic pathways. The ROCs were generated with an area under the curve of 0.907 (95% confidence interval, 0.726–1) for the model with 15 metabolites. Conclusion T3cDM is characterized by increased sphingosine, carnitine, bile acid, and most lipids, providing novel biomarkers for clinical diagnosis and a future direction in research on pathophysiological mechanisms. Background: The incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) dramatically increases among middle-aged and elderly populations in China, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality. Methods: This survey was based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study baseline data in 2011 and follow-up data in 2015. 4,602 participants without MetS at baseline were included in the final analysis. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the Chinese guidelines. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the association of serum uric acid quartiles, or continuous serum uric acid with the risk of incident MetS. Restricted cubic spline regression models were used to explore the dose-response relationship between serum uric acid levels and MetS incidence. Results: Serum uric acid quartiles were associated with an increased risk of MetS incidence (p for trend = 0.03), and the adjusted RRs (95% CI) were 1.17 (0.77, 1.75), 1.51 (1.01, 2.24) and 1.54 (1.01, 2.33) in quartiles 2-4, respectively. In particular, the association was more evident among women. The multivariable-adjusted RR for 1 mg/dL in serum uric acid level was 1.17 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.34) for MetS incidence. In addition, the restricted cubic splines showed that higher serum uric acid levels were dose- response associated with increased MetS incidence risk (p for linear trend < 0.001). Objectives: Diet can influence peripheral leukocyte telomere length (LTL), and various micronutrients have been reported to correlate with it. Zinc is known for its antioxidant properties and immunomodulatory effects. However, there are few epidemiological investigations on the relationship between dietary zinc intake and LTL. This study analyzed the association between dietary zinc and LTL and the potential role of inflammation and oxidative stress among them. Design: Cross-sectional and community-based study. Setting and Participants: 599 participants from rural communities in the Changping suburb of Beijing, China, were recruited. Measurements: Serum lipid profile, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), oxidative stress marker, and inflammatory cytokines levels were measured. Detailed dietary data were obtained using a 24 h food recall. LTL was assessed using a real-time PCR assay. Spearman analysis, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and general linear regression models were used to determine the association between dietary zinc intake and LTL. Simple regulatory models were also applied to analyze the role of inflammation and oxidative stress among them. Results: A total of 482 subjects were ultimately included in this analysis. Spearman analysis showed that dietary zinc intake and zinc intake under energy density were negatively correlated with LTL (r=−0.142 and −0.126, all P <0.05) and positively correlated with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (r=0.138 and 0.202, all P <0.05) while only dietary zinc without energy adjustment had a positive correlation with superoxide dismutase (SOD). RCS (P for non-linearity=0.933) and multiple linear regression (B=−0.084, P=0.009) indicated a negative linear association between dietary zinc and LTL. The adjustment of TNF-α rather than SOD could abolish the relationship. The mediation model suggested that the unfavorable effect of dietary zinc on LTL was mediated by TNF-α. Conclusions: High dietary zinc may correlate with telomere attrition, and TNF-α can act as a mediator in this relationship. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death among urban and rural residents in China, and elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a risk factor for ASCVD. Considering the increasing burden of ASCVD, lipid management is of the utmost importance. In recent years, research on blood lipids has made breakthroughs around the world, hence a revision of Chinese guideline for lipid management is imperative, especially since the target lipid levels in the general population vary in respect to the risk of ASCVD. The level of LDL-C, which can be regarded as appropriate in a population without frisk factors, can be considered abnormal in people at high risk of developing ASCVD. As a result, the "Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia" were adapted into the "Chinese guideline for Lipid Management" (henceforth referred to as the new guidelines) by an Experts' committee after careful deliberation. The new guidelines still recommend LDL-C as the primary target for lipid control, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk stratification to determine its target value. These guidelines recommend that moderate intensity statin therapy in adjunct with a heart-healthy lifestyle, be used as an initial line of treatment, followed by cholesterol absorption inhibitors or/and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, as necessary. The new guidelines provide guidance for lipid management across various age groups, from children to the elderly. Objective Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels are associated with serum lipid concentrations in the general nonpregnant population. Here, we aimed to establish trimester-specific reference intervals and to explore the associations of their variations within the specific reference intervals during pregnancy. Methods Trimester-specific reference intervals were established according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute EP28-A3c guidelines using a direct sampling method based on a large prospective cohort. After making one-to-one matches, correlation analyses between TSH and lipid index levels, especially within the reference intervals, were conducted. Result A total of 1648 pregnant women for TSH and 2045 subjects for lipids were recruited to establish the trimester-specific reference intervals. The upper reference limit (90% confidence interval) of TSH for pregnant women in the first trimester is 3.95 (3.66–4.29) mIU/L, which is very close to the default value (4.0 mIU/L) recommended by the American Thyroid Association in 2017. Apart from triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, TSH levels were positively associated with the serum concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non–HDL-C), and remnant cholesterol (RC) either in the entire range or within the specific reference intervals. Of note, the positive correlations between TSH and non–HDL-C and RC were, albeit similarly weak (r  < 0.25), relatively more robust (P  < .001). Conclusion In this study, we showed positive correlations between TSH and lipid components within trimester-specific reference intervals, highlighting the need for the integrated management of pregnant women over age 35 and with nonoptimal lipid status in China. Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver disorder worldwide. According to several previous studies, the treatment of patients with NAFLD using medicinal and food-homologous substances has consistent effects on the levels of blood lipids and blood glucose and liver function. Objective: This systematic review was conducted to investigate the impact of medicinal and food homologous substances on blood lipid and glucose levels as well as liver function in patients with NAFLD. Methods: A thorough search was conducted in eight databases, including China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), China Biomedical Literature Database (SinoMed), Wanfang Database, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase, for articles published from database inception until June 24, 2023. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated utilizing Cochrane Randomized Trial Risk Bias Tool, Edition 2 and GRADE methodology for assessment. Results: A total of 13 randomized controlled trials, involving 829 patients with NAFLD, were included in the analysis, these studies included a total of 9 medicinal and food homologous substances. In the 13 studies, hawthorn (2), sea buckthorn (1), ginger (2), turmeric (4) (1 with chicory seeds), cinnamon (1), cardamom (1), purslane (1) and saffron (1) were included. The results of the included studies showed that medicinal and food homologous substances could improve high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and liver enzyme levels in patients with NAFLD to a certain extent, but the effect of turmeric on TC, liver enzyme levels is controversial. Conclusion: In patients with NAFLD, dietary intervention using medicinal and food homologous substances can ameliorate blood lipid and blood glucose levels and liver enzymes to some extent. In clinical work, medicinal and food homologous substances can be used to provide patients with NAFLD with a safe and effective dietary plan to help prevent and treat disease onset and progression. Introduction: The treatment with monosialotetrahexosylganglioside (GM1) improves the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). The alteration of DNA methylation in the blood was examined to investigate epigenetic modification by GM1 treatment. Methods: After a 28-day continuous intravenous infusion of GM1 (100mg), the motor and non-motor symptoms were evaluated by UPDRS III, Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) scores, FS-14, SCOPA-AUT, and PDQ-8. Moreover, blood samples were collected and PBMC was isolated. Genome-wide DNA methylation was performed by an 850K BeadChip. RNA levels and apoptosis were examined by RT-PCR and flow cytometry in rotenone-based cell models. The CREB5 plasmid was transfected by electroporation into SH-SY5Y cells. We also identified 235 methylation variable positions achieving genome-wide significance in 717558 differentially methylated positions (DMPs) (P = 0.0003) in comparison of pretreatment with post-treatment measurements (statistical analysis paired-samples t-test). Results: By searching the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset and GWAS, 23 methylation variable positions were screened. Moreover, there are 7 hypomethylated methylation variable positions correlated with the scores of motor symptoms (UPDRS III scale). According to KEGG pathways enrichment analysis, the methylated genes CACNA1B (hypomethylated), CREB5 (hypermethylated), GNB4 (hypomethylated), and PPP2R5A (hypomethylated) were enriched in the dopaminergic synapse pathway. Pretreated with GM1 (80 µM) for 1 h, cell apoptosis and impaired neurite outgrowth were inhibited in rotenone-induced PD cell models. The RNA expression of CREB5 was increased in rotenone-treated SH-SY5Y cells. GM1 treatment decreased rotenone-induced CREB5 gene expression. The enhancement of CREB5 gene expression suppressed the protective role of GM1 in rotenone-induced cell apoptosis. Objective: To predict the optimal cut-off values for screening and predicting metabolic syndrome(MetS) in a middle-aged and elderly Chinese population using 13 obesity and lipid-related indicators, and to identify the most suitable predictors. Methods: The data for this cross-sectional investigation came from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 9457 middleaged and elderly people aged 45-98 years old. We examined 13 indicators, including waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-height ratio (WHtR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), lipid accumulation product index (LAP), conicity index (CI), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG-index) and their combined indices (TyG-BMI, TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR). The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to determine the usefulness of indicators for screening for MetS in the elderly and to determine their cut-off values, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). Association analysis of 13 obesity-related indicators with MetS was performed using binary logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 9457 middle-aged and elderly Chinese were included in this study, and the overall prevalence of the study population was 41.87% according to the diagnostic criteria of NCEP ATP III. According to age and gender, the percentage of males diagnosed with MetS was 30.67% (45-54 years old: 30.95%, 55-64 years old: 41.02%, 65-74 years old: 21.19%, = 75 years old: 6.84%). The percentage of females diagnosed with MetS was 51.38% (45-54 years old: 31.95%, 55-64 years old: 39.52%, 65-74 years old: 20.43%, = 75 years old: 8.10%). The predictive power of Tyg-related parameters was more prominent in both sexes. In addition, LAP and CVAI are also good at predicting MetS. ABSI had a poor prediction ability. Conclusions: Among the middle-aged and elderly population in China, after adjusting for confounding factors, all the indicators except ABSI had good predictive power. Aim: Low-income Cantonese women aged 60 years and older are more likely to have multiple non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Neither the independent primary health care system nor the social work system is equipped to address their complex needs regarding health and daily care. The objective of this study was to design and evaluate a social worker-led self-management program for older community-dwelling women with NCDs. Subject and methods: A total of 144 and 138 participants were recruited in the intervention and control groups, respectively, from 10 communities in Guangzhou, China. The intervention group was designed so that each community recruited two social workers to carry out an NCD self-management program. A health care professional assisted social workers to complete six weekly two-hour sessions. The control group had no extra intervention. The evaluation was conducted at baseline and 12-month follow-up. Outcomes included changes in weight, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), lipid profile, self-management behaviors, and NCD-related knowledge. Results: After 12 months, participants had gained 3.6 and 6.6 kg (p = 0.025 for between-group difference) in the intervention and control groups, respectively. NCD-related knowledge increased by 15.4% and 11.3% (p < 0.001 for between-group difference), respectively. The intervention group had a greater increase in self-reported exercise (87% to 95%) than the control group (81% to 85%) (p difference = 0.031). Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a global health concern, with a significant impact on morbidity and mortality rates. Using fasting glucose, fasting triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), the metabolic score of insulin resistance (Mets-IR), a novel index created by Mexican researchers to assess insulin sensitivity, is a more precise way to measure insulin sensitivity. This study aimes to explore the association between Mets-IR and CVD, as well as investigate the potential mediating role of of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Methods: The study's data came from the 2011 and 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Studies (CHARLS). We used three logistic regression models to account for the potential effects of ten factors on cardiovascular disease/stroke/heart disease. Moreover, We performed mediation analyses to evaluate the role of LDL-C in the association between Mets-IR and incident CVD. Results: This study comprised 4,540 participants, of whom 494 (10.88%) were found to develop disease (CVD). Each interquartile range (IQR) increased in Mets-IR raised the risk of developing CVD by 38% (OR=1.38; 95% CI, 1.21-1.56) and there was a linear dose-response relationship between Mets-IR and the risk of new-onset cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart disease (Poverall<0.05, P non-linear>0.05). Approximately 5% (indirect effect/total effect) of the significant association of Mets-IR with stroke was mediated by LDL-C, respectively. With the addition of Mets-IR to the base model, the continuous net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement for predicting cardiovascular disease increased by 0.175 (P <0.001) and 0.006 (P <0.001), respectively. Conclusion: ets-IR is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease/stroke/cardiac issues, with LDL-C mediating these relationships. In recent years, much attention has been paid to the use of biopolymers as food packaging materials due to their important characteristics and properties. These include non-toxicity, ease of availability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, indicating their potential as an alternative to conventional plastic packaging that has long been under environmental scrutiny. Given the current focus on sustainable development, it is imperative to develop studies on biopolymers as eco-friendly and sustainable food packaging materials. Therefore, the aim of this review is to explore trends and characteristics of biopolymer-based biodegradable films for food packaging, analyze the contribution of various journals and cooperation between countries, highlight the most influential authors and articles, and provide an overview of the social, environmental, and economic aspects of biodegradable films for food packaging. To achieve this goal, a bibliometric analysis and systematic review based on the PRISMA method were conducted. Relevant articles were carefully selected from the Scopus database. A bibliometric analysis was also conducted to discuss holistically, comprehensively, and objectively biodegradable films for food packaging. An increasing interest was found in this study, especially in the last 3 years with Brazil and China leading the number of papers on biodegradable films for food packaging, which were responsible for 20.4% and 12.5% of the published papers, respectively. The results of the keyword analysis based on the period revealed that the addition of bioactive compounds into packaging films is very promising because it can increase the quality and safety of packaged food. These results reveal that biodegradable films demonstrate a positive and promising trend as food packaging materials that are environmentally friendly and promote sustainability. In 1982, a water-soluble aminoplastic resin embedding method for electron microscopy (EM) was developed to study lipids. It involves a silylation technique for processing cured resins by converting them from hydrophilic to hydrophobic status, facilitating ultra-thin sectioning. The technique offers better preservation of lipovitellin material in frog (Rana amurensis) yolk platelets, and it shows membrane ultrastructure better than traditional epoxy embedding methods. An early (1982) pseudo-colored TEM image processing technique applied to the micrographs obtained by EM of silylated aminoplastic thin sections revealed the lipovitellin molecules, in relation to the biosynthesis of new membranes in the first cleavage of the egg, with remarkable clarity and explains the lipovitellin molecules in relation to the biosynthesis of new membranes. Because the original article was written in Chinese and published in China before its open policy, many scientists may not be aware of the publication. Purpose: Insulin resistance (IR) is closely associated with lipid accumulation. Here, we investigated the temporal relationship between the two conditions after bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: In total, 409 participants were enrolled from three bariatric centers in China from 2009 to 2018. We evaluated whether baseline IR (proxied by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)) and lipid accumulation (proxied by visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP)) were associated with follow-up IR and lipid accumulation (3 months postoperatively) using linear regression models. We then conducted a cross-lagged panel analysis model to simultaneously examine the bidirectional relationship between IR and lipid accumulation. Results: Multivariable linear regression analyses showed that baseline HOMA-IR was associated with follow-up VAI (β = 0.430, 95% CI: 0.082–0.778, p = 0.016) and LAP (β = 0.070, 95% CI: 0.010–0.130, p = 0.022). There was no relationship between baseline lipid accumulation and follow-up IR. Further cross-lagged panel analyses indicated that the path coefficient from baseline HOMA-IR to follow-up VAI (β2 = 0.145, p = 0.003) was significantly greater than the coefficient from baseline VAI to follow-up HOMA-IR (β1 = − 0.013, p = 0.777). Similarly, the path coefficient from baseline HOMA-IR to follow-up LAP (β2 = 0.141, p = 0.003) was significantly greater than the coefficient from baseline LAP to follow-up HOMA-IR (β1 = 0.041, p = 0.391). The bidirectional relationship between chronotype and meal energy distribution, and the effect of their relationship on blood lipid level has not been investigated. This study aims to test and compare the bidirectional mediating effects of chronotype and meal energy distribution on blood lipid levels. Data of 9376 adult participants from 2018 wave of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were analysed. Two mediation models were tested and compared: one with Evening energy proportion (Evening EI%) as mediator of the association between adjusted mid-sleep time on free days (MSFa) and blood lipid levels and the other with MSFa as mediator of the association of Evening EI% with blood lipid levels. The mediating effect of Evening EI% on the association between MSFa and TC, LDL-C and non-HDL-C were significant (p <.001, p =.001, and p =.002, respectively). The mediating effect of MSFa on the association between Evening EI% and TC, LDL-C and non-HDL-C were significant (p =.006, p =.035, and p <.001 respectively). Evening EI% had a larger standardized mediation effect compared to MSFa. The bidirectional mediation effect suggests a reinforcement mechanism, in which later chronotype and higher Evening EI% reciprocally influence their negative impact on elevated blood lipid levels, leading to higher risk of cardiovascular diseases in the general population. Background. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is involved in lipid transformation and metabolism. Although some studies have examined the association between ApoE polymorphisms and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the findings differ depending on the location and population. Methods. A total of 1,738 participants, including 743 patients with T2DM and 995 controls without T2DM, were enrolled from central China, and ApoE polymorphisms, 388T>C (rs429358) and 526C>T (rs7412), were genotyped. The association between ApoE alleles and T2DM and blood lipid levels was analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the interactions between ApoE polymorphisms and various factors, such as age, sex, and prevalence of hypertension in patients with T2DM. Results. The genotype ε3/ε4 and ε4 alleles of ApoE were associated with T2DM risk in the Chinese Han population in central China. Moreover, in patients with T2DM, participants in the E4 (ε3/ε4, ε4/ε4) group had significantly higher lipid profiles than those in the E3 (ε3/ε3) group, whereas participants in the E2 group (ε2/ε2, ε2/ε3) showed lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and ApoE-A1 levels than those in the E3 (ε3/ε3) group. Globally, air pollution is amongst the most significant causes of premature death. Nevertheless, studies on the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and blood lipids have typically not been population-based. In a large, community-based sample of residents in Yixing city, we assessed the relationship between short-term outdoor PM2.5 exposure and blood lipid concentrations. Participants who attended the physical examination were enrolled from Yixing People's hospital from 2015 to 2020. We collected general characteristics of participants, including gender and age, as well as test results of indicators of blood lipids. Data on daily meteorological factors were collected from the National Meteorological Data Sharing Center (http://data.cma.cn/) and air pollutant concentrations were collected from the China Air Quality Online Monitoring and Analysis Platform (https://www.aqistudy.cn/) during this period. We applied generalized additive models to estimate short-term effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure on each measured blood lipid-related indicators and converted these indicators into dichotomous variables (non- hyperlipidemia and hyperlipidemia) to calculate risks of hyperlipidemia associated with PM2.5 exposure. A total of 197,957 participants were included in the analysis with mean age 47.90 years (± SD, 14.28). The increase in PM2.5 was significantly associated with hyperlipidemia (odds ratio (OR) 1.003, 95% CI 1.001–1.004), and it was still significant in subgroups of males and age < 60 years. For every 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, triglyceride levels decreased by 0.5447% (95% CI − 0.7873, − 0.3015), the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration increased by 0.0127 mmol/L (95% CI 0.0099, 0.0156), the total cholesterol concentration increased by 0.0095 mmol/L (95% CI 0.0053, 0.0136), and no significant association was observed between PM2.5 and the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. After excluding people with abnormal blood lipid concentrations, the associations remained significant except for the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. PM2.5 was positively correlated with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol, and negatively correlated with triglyceride, indicating PM2.5 can potentially affect health through blood lipid levels. Objective: Emerging evidence suggests that elevated remnant cholesterol (RC) correlates with several health conditions. To explore the association of plasma RC with MCI incidence and the relationship between plasma RC and different domains of cognition in MCI patients. Methods: Thirty-six MCI patients and 38 cognitively healthy controls (HC) were enrolled in the present cross-sectional study. Using total cholesterol (TC) minus high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) minus low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as the formula for calculating fasting RC. Cognition was assessed using the Chinese version of the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Trail Making Test (TMT), and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF). Results: Compared to healthy controls, MCI patients had a higher level of RC, the median difference in RC levels between these two groups was 8.13 mg/dl (95.0%CI: 0.97-16.1). Concurrently, plasma RC level was positively associated with MCI risk (OR = 1.05, 95%CI: 1.01-1.10). Notably, elevated RC level was correlated with impaired cognition in MCI patients, such as DSST (pr = -0.45, p = 0.008), ROCFLong Delayed Recall (pr = -0.45, p = 0.008), AVLT-Immediate Recall (pr = -0.38, p = 0.028), and TMT-A (pr = 0.44, p = 0.009). Conversely, no significant correlation was found between RC and the AVLT-Long Delayed Recall test. Conclusion: This study found that plasma remnant cholesterol was associated with MCI. Baicalin magnesium is a water-soluble compound isolated from the aqueous solution by Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Preliminary experiments have demonstrated that baicalin magnesium can exert protective effects against acute liver injury in rats induced by carbon tetrachloride or lipopolysaccharide combined with d-galactose by regulating lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effect of baicalin magnesium on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in rats and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. NASH was induced through a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks, and Sprague-Dawley rats were intravenously injected with baicalin magnesium, baicalin, and magnesium sulfate for 2 weeks, respectively. Serum was obtained for biochemical analyses and the determination of oxidative stress indicators. Liver tissues were collected for use in liver index assessment, histopathological examination, inflammatory factor analysis, and protein and gene expression analysis. The results revealed that baicalin magnesium markedly improved HFD-induced lipid deposition, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and histopathological impairments. And baicalin magnesium may exert a protective effect on NASH rats by inhibiting the NLR family pyrin domain involving the 3 (NLRP3)/caspase-1/interleukin (IL)-1β inflammatory pathway. Additionally, the effect of baicalin magnesium was remarkably superior to that of equimolar baicalin and magnesium sulfate in regard to ameliorating NASH symptoms. Background: Lipid metabolism dysregulation is a prominent metabolic alteration in various cancers. The study aimed to explore the association of plasma lipid metabolism profiles with overall survival (OS) for gastric cancer (GC) patients who received gastrectomy. Methods: GC patients who were treated with gastrectomy and measured with plasma lipid metabolism profiles using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy in Nanfang Hospital between January 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018, were recruited. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression model was used to analyze variables selected by univariate analysis for OS. An index of plasma lipid metabolism profiles, named plasma lipid metabolism index (PLMI), was constructed by variables' coefficients in LASSO regression to explore its association with OS and its role in the prediction model. Results: A total of 158 GC patients were included in this study. Four of the 110 lipid profiles, including LDL-5 Apo-B, LDL-4 Cholesterol, HDL-4 Apo-A2, and HDL-4 Free Cholesterol, were selected to construct the PLMI. The optimal cut-off value of PLMI for OS was used to classify the population into two subgroups, the high PLMI group (≥ − 0.163) and the low PLMI group (< − 0.163). The high PLMI group had a shorter OS (p = 0.0034) and was the independent risk factor for OS (Hazard Ratio = 2.13, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.07–4.22, p = 0.031) after adjusting for perineural invasion and tumor stage. In subsets of the I–III stage and treating postoperative chemotherapy, high PLMI also had an unfavorable correlation with OS (p = 0.016 and p = 0.0086, respectively). The nomogram prediction models of both the training cohort and validation cohort showed good calibration and discrimination with the concordance indexes of 0.806 (95% CI, 0.732–0.880) in the training cohort and 0.794 (95% CI, 0.725–0.862) in the validation cohort. Conclusions: This study found that the index derived from the LDL-5 Apo-B, LDL-4 Cholesterol, HDL-4 Apo-A2, and HDL-4 Free Cholesterol, was significantly associated with overall survival, suggesting that regulating lipid metabolisms might improve the prognosis for GC patients. The Holocene hydroclimate evolution and underlying mechanisms modulating the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) remains controversial, especially in south eastern China. Here we present a multiproxy peat record of monsoon evolution from southeastern China covering the last 14 ka. Our new records show a relatively weaker EASM but wetter hydroclimate during the early (10 to 8 ka) and late Holocene (after 5.4 ka), while a stronger EASM and overall drier climate during the mid-Holocene (8 to 5.4 ka). In line with nearby speleothem records, our results reveal a dominant control of the northern-latitude ice-sheet meltwater forcing on millennial-scale East Asian hydroclimate variability during the last deglaciation and early Holocene. This dominant influence, however, likely waned once the global sea level had stabilized during the mid-to-late Holocene, giving way to other drivers of the monsoon and hydroclimate, including a combination of summer insolation and teleconnection patterns associated with vegetation-dust feedbacks. Background: Emerging data suggest that the interpretation of the association between obesity and lipids appears to be oversimplified. This study aimed to quantify the complex relationships between anthropometric indices and lipid profile. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study including 9620 participants in Southern China. Anthropometric indices included the indices of general obesity (ie, body mass index (BMI)) and central obesity (ie, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)). Lipids included low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) and atherogenic lipids (ie, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), triglycerides (TG) and TG/HDLc ratio). LOESS regression and general linear model were the main statistical methods. Results: Almost all associations between anthropometric indices and lipids were lost in obese adults. The loss of association occurred quicker with LDLc than that with atherogenic lipids; the break point for the association loss was at BMI of 24 kg/m2 with LDLc (Slope Below break-point = 1.81, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 0.29, P=0.121), while at 28 kg/m2 with HDLC (Slope Below break-point = − 1.41, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 0.07, P=0.666) or TG (Slope Below break-point = 4.96, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point = 2.93, P=0.01), and at 30 kg/m2 with TG/HDLc ratio (Slope Below break-point = 0.15, P< 0.001; Slope Above break-point= 0.01, P=0.936), respectively. Similar relationships were found for WC and WHR. Besides, the presence of other metabolic disorders contributed to the loss of anthropometry-lipids relationships, for example, the BMI-LDLc association attenuated to null in both obese adults and non-obese population but with more than one other metabolic disorders. Conclusion: The relationships were lost between anthropometric indices and lipids in obese adults with different break points across different lipids, which appeared to be dependent on metabolic status. BACKGROUND: Chrysanthemum is one of the most important and popular ornamentals over the world. Chrysanthemum drink is a type of traditional healthy drink like Chinese tea. Owing to the differences in the chemical compositions, different chrysanthemum varieties have different medicinal effects on human health. Thus, the identification of different chrysanthemum varieties is very important and necessary. This study aims to distinguish seven chrysanthemum varieties that are widely used in China. First, total lipids were obtained from chrysanthemums. After that, lipid profiles were characterized using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with a Q Exactive™ high resolution–accurate‐mass mass spectrometer. RESULTS: A total of 163 lipid molecular species from 17 types of lipid classes in seven varieties of chrysanthemums were determined. Principal component analysis indicated that three lipid molecules, lysophosphatidylethanolamine(18:2) (LPE(18:2)), LPE(16:0), and phosphatidic acid(18:2/18:3) (variable importance in projection >3, P < 0.001), can be used as potential biomarkers to distinguish seven chrysanthemum varieties. Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that the lipid molecular profiles of 'Gongju' were most similar to 'Jinzijianju', followed by 'Huaibaiju', 'Boju', 'Hangbaiju', 'Chuju', and 'Fubaiju'. We investigated the prevalence and clinical metabolic characteristics of lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in an elderly Chinese population and assessed the relevance of lipid markers and genetic variation. All 5,338 community subjects underwent detailed clinical and laboratory examinations and were divided into three groups: lean (Body mass index (BMI) < 23 kg/m2, n = 2,012), overweight (BMI = 23–24.9 kg/m2, n = 1,354), and obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, n = 1,972). Single nucleotide polymorphisms were selected based on those reported in previous NAFLD or obesity genome-wide association studies. The frequencies of alleles and genotypes were calculated and statistically analyzed with Pearson's χ2 tests. One-way ANCOVA was used to test the association between positive SNPs and metabolic parameters in lean NAFLD individuals. Our results showed that the C allele frequency of rs2279026, the G allele of rs2279028, the C allele of rs780093, and the C allele frequency of rs1260326 were higher in obese NAFLD than in lean NAFLD (P < 0.05). In addition, we observed an association between the CC of rs1421085, TT of rs3751812, AA of rs8050136, and AA of rs9939609 genotypes in the FTO gene and low-density lipoprotein levels (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our findings provide a unique perspective on the prevalence, genetic characteristics, and metabolic profile of NAFLD in older lean individuals in China. Ferroptosis is potential to relieve drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is a critical modulator of ferroptosis. This study discussed the mechanism of GPX4-inhibited ferroptosis in sorafenib resistance in HCC. HCG18 in HCC cells was detected. Sorafenib resistant (SR) cell line Huh7-SR cells were treated with sorafenib (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 μM). After silencing HCG18 in Huh7-SR cells, cell activity, proliferation and apoptosis were detected. The levels of iron, the concentration of MDA, GSH and lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured to evaluate the ferroptosis. The downstream mechanism of HCG18 was predicted and verified. Huh7-SR cells were infected with lentivirus sh-HCG18 to establish xenograft tumor model. HCG18 was elevated in HCC cells and associated with sorafenib resistance. Silencing HCG18 inhibited cell proliferation, promoted apoptosis, and impaired sorafenib resistance. Ferroptosis was inhibited in Huh7-SR cells, while silencing HCG18 inhibited sorafenib resistance by promoting ferroptosis. GPX4 overexpression averted the promotion of sh-HCG18 on ferroptosis, thereby reducing sorafenib resistance. HCG18 sponged miR-450b-5p to regulate GPX4. Tibetan pigs, an indigenous pig breed in China, have high overall fat deposition and flavorful and tasty meat. They are thus good models for studying adipogenesis. Few studies have been conducted focusing on expression of lipid regulated genes in different adipose tissues of Tibetan pigs. Therefore, we compared the difference of histomorphology and expression level of lipid regulated genes through qPCR and western blot in subcutaneous fat, perirenal fat, omental adipose tissue, and inguinal fat of Tibetan pigs. Our results showed that the area of subcutaneous adipocytes in Tibetan pigs was smaller, while the other three adipose tissues (perirenal fat, greater omentum fat, inguinal fat) had cell areas of similar size. The gene expression of FABP4, FASN, FABP3, and ME1 in subcutaneous fat was significantly higher than that in perirenal fat. Furthermore, the protein expression of FABP4 was significantly lower in subcutaneous fat than in perirenal fat (p < 0.05), and the expression of FASN was higher in greater omentum fat than in subcutaneous fat (p = 0.084). The difference in adipocyte cell size and expression of lipid-regulated genes in adipose tissues from the various parts of the pig body is likely due to the different cellular lipid metabolic processes. Increasing soybean production and ensuring greater access to soybean protein and lipids is critical for global food security and human health. Seed size (i.e., seed weight) is one of the most important agronomic traits of soybean, which not only determines the seed yield, but can also affect the yield of protein and lipids. In China, farmers favor soybean cultivars with large seeds, which they believe produce more protein and lipids; however, experimental evidence supporting this belief is lacking. Therefore, we conducted field experiments from 2017 to 2020 at 35 locations across the Huang-Huai-Hai region (HHH) of China with 64 soybean cultivars. The seed yield, seed protein content, and seed lipids content of soybean, and their relationship with seed size were investigated. The highest seed yield (i.e., seed weight per unit area) was 2996.5 kg ha−1 in the north of HHH. However, the highest seed protein content was found in the south of HHH (42.5%) for the higher temperature, which was significantly higher than that of the middle (41.7%) and north of HHH (40.2%). In contrast, the highest seed lipids content was 20.7% in the north of HHH. Temperature, which had a path coefficient on seed yield of 0.519, can promote soybean seed yield. The correlation analysis indicated that the selection of the large seed size cultivar did not increase seed yield, and even led to a reduction of seed yield under high-yield environmental conditions. The seed protein content of soybean was not increased in the cultivars with large seed sizes. In addition, under different levels of seed lipids content (<20.30% or >20.30%), a significantly negative relationship was found between seed lipids content and hundred seed weight. Therefore, it is recommended that farmers choose to plant cultivars with smaller soybean seed sizes, so as to ensure high and stable soybean seed yield and obtain more vegetable protein and lipids per unit area. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the presence and factors related to insulin resistance (IR) in untreated very early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Patients and methods: Between June 2020 and July 2021, a total of 90 RA patients (29 males, 61 females; mean age: 49.3±10.2 years; range 24 to 68 years) and 90 age-, sex- and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls (35 males, 55 females; mean age: 48.3±5.1 years; range 38 to 62 years) were included. Homeostatic model assessment was applied to evaluate IR (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-β). Disease activity score 28 (DAS28) was used to estimate disease activity. Lipid profile, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were measured. Logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the IR and clinical features of RA patients. Results: The RA patients had higher HOMA-IR values (p<0.001) and adverse lipid profile. The IR was positively correlated with age (r=0.35, p<0.01), CRP (r=0.42, p<0.001), ESR (r=0.33, p<0.01), disease duration (r=0.28, p<0.01), and DAS28 (r=0.50, p<0.001). The DAS28, CRP and age, but not sex and menopausal status, were independently associated with IR. Conclusion: Insulin resistance was present in untreated very early RA patients. The DAS28, CRP, and age were independent predictors for the presence of IR. Background the effects regarding n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) supplementation on sarcopenia have been explored by several clinical trials. Nonetheless, the use of n-3 PUFA for improving body composition, muscle strength and physical performance in older people is conflicting. Objectives our aim was to perform a randomised, double-blind, controlled trial to evaluate the effects of 6-month n-3 PUFA supplementation on body composition, muscle strength and physical performance in older Chinese people. Methods in this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 200 eligible subjects were randomly assigned to receive 4 g/day fish oil capsules (1.34 g eicosapentaenoic [EPA] + 1.07 docosahexaenoic [DHA]) or 4 g/day corn oil capsules (EPA + DHA <0.05 g) for 6 months. The primary outcomes were the changes of body composition, muscle strength (hand grip strength) and physical performance (Timed Up and Go time). Secondary outcomes were the changes in serum lipid profiles. Results compared with control group, fish oil-derived n-3 PUFA supplementation resulted in significant increases in thigh circumference (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001), total skeletal muscle mass (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001); the differences were still significant even after height correction. Muscle strength and physical performance including hand grip strength (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001) and Timed Up and Go time (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001) were also improved after a 6-month fish oil-derived n-3 PUFA intervention. In terms of serum lipid profiles, fish oil-derived n-3 PUFA supplementation could significantly reduce serum level of triglyceride (interaction time × group effect P  = 0.012) and increase high density lipoprotein cholesterol (interaction time × group effect P  < 0.001); while no significant improvement was found in serum concentrations of total cholesterol (interaction time × group effect P  = 0.413) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (interaction time × group effect P  = 0.089). Conclusions our present trial demonstrated that a 6-month fish oil-derived n-3 PUFA supplementation could beneficially affect the body composition, muscle strength, physical performance and serum lipid profiles in older people, which could be into considerations when making strategies aiming to the primary prevention of sarcopenia.
