Background: Despite its prevalence, there is ongoing debate regarding the optimal management strategy for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), reflecting the variability in clinical presentation and treatment outcomes. This ambidirectional, nationwide, multicenter registry study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of multimodality treatment approaches for CSDH in the Chinese population. Methods/design: A multicenter cohort of CSDH patients from 59 participating hospitals in mainland China was enrolled in this study. The treatment modalities encompassed a range of options and baseline demographics, clinical characteristics, radiographic findings, and surgical techniques were documented. Clinical outcomes, including hematoma resolution, recurrence rates, neurological status, and complications, were assessed at regular intervals during treatment, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years follow-up. Result: Between March 2022 and August 2023, a comprehensive cohort comprising 2173 individuals who met the criterion was assembled across 59 participating clinical sites. Of those patients, 81.1% were male, exhibiting an average age of 70.12 ± 14.53 years. A historical record of trauma was documented in 48.0% of cases, while headache constituted the predominant clinical presentation in 58.1% of patients. The foremost surgical modality employed was the burr hole (61.3%), with conservative management accounting for 25.6% of cases. Notably, a favorable clinical prognosis was observed in 88.9% of CSDH patients at 3 months, and the recurrence rate was found to be 2.4%. Conclusion: This registry study provides critical insights into the multimodality treatment of CSDH in China, offering a foundation for advancing clinical practices, optimizing patient management, and ultimately, improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from this challenging neurosurgical condition. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vascular disease complicated by coronary artery injury. Although polymorphisms in prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1 (PTGS1) are being increasingly explored in cardiovascular diseases, little is known regarding the connection between PTGS1 polymorphisms and KD risk. We evaluated 834 KD patients and 1474 healthy controls to explore the relationship between PTGS1 polymorphisms (rs1330344 and rs5788) and KD risk. Our results showed that the rs1330344 CC genotype was significantly associated with KD risk and coronary artery injury in children with KD. In combined analysis, individuals with 1-2 unfavorable genotypes had an increased risk of KD, compared with those with no risk genotype. Stratified analysis indicated that the rs1330344 CC genotype is strongly associated with increased risk of KD in children aged ≤60 months and females. Moreover, carrying 1-2 of these SNP genotypes had a higher risk of KD than those who harbored none of them in children ≤60 months of age and females; the risk of coronary artery dilatations/small aneurysms and medium/giant aneurysms was also significantly increased in KD patients. Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is an increasingly serious global issue. DR-TB has a lower success rate and more severe interruption of treatment than ordinary tuberculosis. Incomplete treatment not only reduces recovery rate in DR-TB patients but also increases the spread of DR-TB. Optimizing medical security policies for DR-TB can reduce the economic burden of patients and can thereby improve treatment success rate. Methods: Patients with DR-TB who were registered in Wuhan Center for Tuberculosis Control and Prevention from January 2016 to December 2019 were selected as research subjects. General descriptive statistical analysis methods were used in analyzing patients' treatment outcomes and medical security compensation rate. The binary logistic regression was used in analyzing the impacts of medical security level on treatment outcomes of DR-TB. Results: A total of 409 DR-TB patients were included in the study, and the refusal rate was 12.47%. The treatment success rate was only 37.09% for patients who started treatment and had treatment outcomes. The total out-of-pocket expenses (OOPs) per capita for DR-TB patients were 13,005.61 Chinese yuan. The outpatient effective compensation ratio (ECR) of DR-TB patients was only 51.04%. The outpatient ECR of DR-TB with subsidies of public health projects (SPHPs) were nearly 80% higher than those without SPHP. high outpatient ECR helped optimize treatment outcomes (P < 0.001, OR = 1.038). The inpatient ECR had no effect on patients' treatment outcomes (P = 0.158, OR = 0.986). Conclusion: Many DR-TB patients did not receive complete treatment. The key breakthrough point in improving DR-TB treatment outcomes is to optimize the outpatient medical insurance compensation policy. Including the costs of DR-TB in expenses for severe diseases in outpatient care is recommended, and financial investment should be appropriately increased to ensure the high coverage ratio of subsidies for public health projects. This paper digests the influences of financial transparency and media coverage in the Chinese stock market. In China, media performs under a regulatory system and media information is regarded as the direction of news. In addition, the Chinese market is dominated by retail investors and financial information is always manipulated, so the reliability of financial information is quite intriguing. The effect of ostensible financial information on the stock market through the media hype is a crucial issue. We employ media and transparency to analyze over 3,000 stocks in China. First of all, the Chinese stock market is characterized by significantly negative momentum profit and thus exhibits price reversal. However, when high media coverage and high transparency jointly come into play, the significantly negative momentum profit turns to be significantly positive. Purpose: Prunella vulgaris (PV), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat patients with thyroid disease for centuries in China. The purpose of the present study was to investigate its bioactive ingredients and mechanisms against Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) using network pharmacology and molecular docking technology to provide some basis for experimental research. Methods: Ingredients of the PV formula were retrieved from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology (TCMSP) database. Additionally, HT-related genes were retrieved from the UniProt and GeneCards databases. Cytoscape constructed networks for visualization. A protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis was constructed, and a PPI network was built using the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) database. These key targets of PV were enriched and analyzed by molecular docking verification, Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment. Results: The compound–target network included 11 compounds and 66 target genes. Key targets contained Jun proto-oncogene (JUN) , hsp90aa1.1 (AKI) , mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1) , and tumor protein p53 (TP53). The main pathways included the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway, the TNF signaling pathway, the PI3K–Akt signaling pathway, and the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. The molecular docking results revealed that the main compound identified in the Prunella vulgaris was luteolin, followed by kaempferol, which had a strong affinity for HT. Conclusion: Molecular docking studies indicated that luteolin and kaempferol were bioactive compounds of PV and might play an essential role in treating HT by regulating multiple signaling pathways. As a class of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), the spatial and temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seawater is important for environmental assessment. Surface water samples were collected from 35 stations during summer and 36 stations during autumn of 2020 in the Bohai Bay. The concentration, composition, distribution and sources of PCBs were analyzed to assess the ecological impact of PCBs. The average concentration of ∑ 18 PCBs was 124.6 ng/L (range of 28.1–445.5 ng/L) in summer and 122.8 ng/L (range of 21.0–581.4 ng/L) in autumn. PCBs in surface seawater of the Bohai Bay showed high near-shore and low far-shore characteristics, indicating the serious influence of land-based sources such as port activities and river inputs. Proportion analysis showed that Tetra-PCBs and Penta-PCBs were the major constituents in most stations. It was assessed as moderate and high risk (MRQ > 0.1) by mixture risk quotient (MRQ) and concentration addition (CA) model in surface seawater of the Bohai Bay. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to explain the sources of PCBs in the Bohai Bay. • We empirically test economic impacts of China's high-speed railways (HSRs) network. • Our spatial econometric model confirms that HSR drives local economic growth. • However, the spill-over effect is insignificant. • HSR significantly increases growth in large-mega cities and developed cities. • However, it could widen economic disparity in China. China's high-speed railways (HSRs) networks have dramatically expanded since 2008, which is widely believed to have promoted economic growth. This study empirically tests this hypothesis and analyses the impact of HSRs on economic disparity between 2002 and 2016 in China using a spatial econometric model. The results confirm the role of HSRs as a driving force in promoting local economic growth, although the spill-over effect is found to be insignificant. However, the cross-city analysis suggests there are heterogeneous effects of HSRs on economic growth. By dividing the sample into small-medium cities and large-mega cities, as well as least-developed, developing, and developed cities, this study finds that HSRs make a significant positive contribution to economic growth in large-mega cities and developed cities but has insignificant effects in other cities. The results indicate that HSRs can widen economic disparity in China. Our findings not only advance the understanding of the role of HSRs in promoting China's economic growth but also provide insights for planning future HSR networks. This study concludes that each city should reasonably plan its HSR network to promote economic growth and reduce economic disparity by accounting for different resource endowments, especially geographic and population factors. • Developing an evaluation system of commercial maritime power (CMP). • Analyzing the evolution of 32 countries' CMP since the inception of the B&R Initiative. • Countries along the routes of the initiative show good performances in the evolution of CMP. Since the Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative was launched in 2013, China's investment in ports across the globe has promoted maritime connectivity, driven performance in shipping, and strengthened its commercial maritime power. With the objective of quantitatively evaluating a country's commercial maritime power, we develop an evaluation system based on the literature and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-entropy method. We analyze the evolution of 32 countries' commercial maritime power since the inception of the B&R Initiative. The main findings are as follows. First, our evaluation system of commercial maritime power consists of a hierarchy containing 4 components, 7 elements, and 32 factors. Second, the evolution of a country's commercial maritime power can be assessed. The results show that countries along the routes of the initiative show good performances in the evolution of commercial maritime power. We show the effect of investor anxiety on momentum in the Chinese stock market. In this market dominated by retail investors, we examine the momentum profits in 900 types of daily testing periods. We find prevalent price reversals in the long formation and holding periods in the Chinese A-share market. Compared to Goyal and Wahal (2015), Wang and Xie (2010), and Kang et al. (2002) who found no momentum, our novel finding from a daily basis is that the A-share market presents price momentum within the short formation and holding periods. We first test the momentum profits under different strengths of anxiety in the A-share market. The stocks held by the least anxious investors elicit the strongest price momentum, whereas the stocks held by the most anxious investors encounter much weaker price momentum in the A-share market. According to our empirical outcomes, the A-share market overall exhibits higher anxiety and weaker momentum, whereas the B-share market embodies milder anxiety and stronger momentum. From the results of single market and cross-market comparisons, the intrinsic anxiety of retail investors is an essential factor stimulating the Chinese stock market to be prone to price reversals. • The provision of sufficient job opportunities is a primary concern for the central governments. • The opening of the HSR increases job opportunities at the national level. • Spatial dependence of job opportunities is found. The provision of sufficient job opportunities has traditionally been a primary objective for both local and central governments. In response to this concern, we investigate spatial dependence of job opportunities among 30 Chinese provincial capital cities (PCCs) from 2002 to 2016, giving special attention to the spatial spillovers of the opening of the high-speed rail (HSR). Using appropriate spatial panel data models, our findings suggest the presence of significant spatial autocorrelation of job opportunities among PCCs. Whilst the HSR has been found to increase job opportunities at the national level, which, however, is not confirmed at the regional level. The spatial spillover effects of the HSR are significant and positive only in the eastern/northeastern region. These findings can help the central government to more fully understand spatial dependence of job opportunities, better plan future HSR networks, and efficiently allocate transportation resources, encouraging cross-regional collaboration to promote regional employment. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution as well as the partitioning behavior of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the summer and autumn seasons of 2020. It was found that the average concentration of PAHs in surface seawater was significantly higher in autumn (58.16 ng L−1) than in summer (40.47 ng L−1) due to a large amount of input in autumn and more photodegradation and biodegradation affected by higher temperatures in summer. The spatial distribution indicated that the river had a significant dilution effect on PAHs in summer and became a significant input source in autumn. In addition, a large number of oil and gas development platforms were distributed throughout the Bohai Bay, and the discharge of production and domestic sewage contributed to the PAHs pollution level. As a semi-enclosed bay, the water exchange capacity of Bohai Bay was poor, leading to a greater accumulation of PAHs in the marine environment. The diagnostic ratios and PCA-MLR indicated that petroleum was the most important source of PAHs with a contribution of 45%, followed by fuel combustion (39%) such as coal and oil. Photooxidation in seawater resulted in a reduction of BaP/BeP, indicating that seasonal variations in photooxidation had a significant impact on the composition of PAHs (summer: 1.49, autumn: 2.96). The concentration of particulate PAHs was correlated with the concentration of dissolved PAHs and SPM, and the proportion of 3-rings (43.8%) and 4-rings (49.8%) PAHs was significantly higher on SPM. The distribution coefficients Log K d and φ spm-water showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing as the number of rings increased, with the 4-rings Pyr exhibiting the highest value. According to the ecological risk assessment, the ecological risk of total PAHs was low (RQ NCs < 800, RQ MECs < 1), but the ecological risk of individual PAHs and the carcinogenicity of high-ring PAHs could not be ignored (＞96.5%). This study is significant for investigating the "sources and sinks" of PAHs in the complex marine environment by analyzing the partitioning behavior of PAHs in different phases. The Bohai Sea is one of the most polluted hotspots by per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the world and studies on the vertical distribution of PFASs at different water layers and phase partitioning between water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were still limited. 23 legacy and emerging PFASs were investigated in seawater and SPM throughout the Bay in this study. The average concentrations of ∑PFASs in seawater were 48.21 ng/L and 52.71 ng/L during the periods of wet and normal water, respectively. In general, the concentrations of ∑PFASs in surface water were higher than that in deep water. Legacy PFASs in seawater were dominated by PFOA and short-chain PFASs, while the emerging alternative HFPO-DA was detected in the whole water layer of the Bohai Bay with an average concentration of 1.09 ng/L. The spatial distribution showed that ∑PFASs were higher nearshore than inside the bay and higher in the south than that in the north of the bay. The average concentration of ∑PFASs in SPM was 9.02 ng/g. Long-chain PFASs and the emerging alternative 6:2 Cl-PFESA accounted for the major contaminants. The partition coefficients log K d and φ spm-w showed a linear positive correlation with carbon chain length. Preliminary risk assessments revealed that the ecological risk of common PFASs in the Bohai Bay was low, while PFOA was at moderate risk. The principal component analysis demonstrated that the production process of traditional fluorochemical factories, fire-fighting and emerging electroplating industries were the main sources of PFASs. This was the first comprehensive survey of emerging PFASs in different water depths and in SPM of the Bohai Bay during different seasons, which provided important scientific data for studying the ecological risks and pollution prevention of PFASs. The dual pressures of the global economic crisis in 2008 and high crude prices through the subsequent recovery period have prompted oil-producing countries to adopt a wide range of protectionist measures including subsidies in all forms and trade and investment restrictions. Focusing on fiscal and industrial policy adjustments in the UK and the People's Republic of China since 2008, this paper argues that both governments have sought an increase in tax contributions from the corporate sector in exchange for intensified, targeted support for specific capital investments that will address the challenges of overall decline in domestic oil production and new field exploration and oil recovery opportunities. These novel 'rent-sharing' schemes - inadequately captured in recent academic debates over precise measurements of fuel subsidies - raise concerns for fair competition in the upstream market and politicians' long-term commitment to the transitioning of energy mix toward green and renewable sources. Through two illustrative case studies of enterprise reform in Henan Province, we examine the underlying political contentions behind the changing roles of local government in the process of the corporatization and asset restructuring of state-owned enterprises (SOE) starting in the late 1990s. As SOEs lose their ability to meet the multitude of resource demands from central and local officials, they become sites of inter-governmental contentions resulting in fiscal and social uncertainties for affected communities exiting the socialist economy. Our first case study is Puyang municipal government, which leveraged its regulatory authority to exact heavy side-payments in return for not obstructing the corporatization of Zhongyuan Oilfield; the second case involves Zhengzhou city officials colluding with provincial bureaucrats and the stateappointed managers of the Yutong Bus Company in an insider privatization that effectively circumvented a specific Ministry of Finance prohibition. Due to the surface water in the upper reaches of Yangtze River in China containing large amounts of silt and algae, high content of microorganisms and suspended solids, the water in Yangtze River cannot be used for cooling a heat pump directly. In this paper, the possibility of using Yangtze River, which goes through Chongqing, a city in southwest China, as a heat source-sink was investigated. Water temperature and quality of the Yangtze River in the Chongqing area were analyzed and the performance of water source heat pump units in different sediment concentrations, turbidity and algae material conditions were tested experimentally, and the water quality standards, in particular surface water conditions, in the Yangtze River region that adapt to energy-efficient heat pumps were also proposed. The experimental results show that the coefficient of performance heat pump falls by 3.73% to the greatest extent, and the fouling resistance of cooling water in the heat exchanger increases up to 25.6% in different water conditions. When the sediment concentration and the turbidity in the river water are no more than 100 g/m³ and 50 NTU respectively, the performance of the heat pump is better, which can be used as a suitable river water quality standard for river water source heat pumps. Shantou, China, is one of the endemic regions of esophageal cancer (EC) in the coastal areas, but the relationship between the multiple exposures of total N-nitroso compounds (TNOCs) and the high risk of EC to date is unclear. This study is to estimate the potential integrative role of multiple exposures of environmental and endogenous TNOC on the EC risk. We collected randomly the samples of 72 h diet and 24 h urine from 256 healthy male (aged 30–65 years) in the high- and low-risk area for EC, and determined the contents of TNOC and 4 N-nitrosamino acids (NAAs) by a method of chemical fission-Thermal Energy Analyzer (TEA) and gas chromatography — TEA, respectively. We used TNOC and NAAs index to evaluate the integrative effect of multiple TNOC exposures on the EC risk by a logistic model. TNOC intake and urinary TNOC content were higher in the high-risk subjects than that in the low-risk subjects by 1.60 μmol/day and 1.45 μmol/L, respectively. TNOC intake, urinary TNOC content and its interaction were significant factors involved in the higher risk of EC (R 2 =0.685, p =0.000) with predicted Correct Class of 85.6%. The risk of the occurrence of a larger SMR of EC may increase by 4.841-fold for every 1 μmol/day increase in TNOC intake (95% CI 2.370–9.888, p =0.000) and by 4.113-fold for every 1 μmol/L increase in urinary TNOC content (95% CI 2.108–8.023, p =0.000), respectively. • Spent DCW is nanocomposite made of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and vermiculite. • Spent DCW is superparamagnetic. • The maximum adsorption for As(V) was 130 mg g −1. • This work offers a practical way to reuse the valuable material, spent DCW. The use of iron-based disposable-chemical-warmer (DCW) produces huge amount of solid wastes every year (e.g. at least 2 million tons of solid waste every year for China and Japan only), which are directly abandoned as trash now. In this work, spent DCW was recycled as adsorbent for As(V) removal from water. For the first time, we elucidated that the spent DCW was a magnetic nanocomposite consisted mainly of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and vermiculite with large surface area (56.6 m2/g). The detailed morphology characterization revealed the formation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on vermiculite's surface, with the average crystallites' size estimated to be ~10 nm. The adsorbent exhibited superparamagnetism with a strong saturation magnetization value 40 emu / g , which can be utilized to recollect the adsorbent after water treatment. The As(V) adsorption isotherm conformed to Langmuir isotherm model with the maximum adsorption capacity of 130 mg/g under neutral pH and room temperature. The adsorption capacity for As(V) outperformed most of the reported adsorbents, which was attributed to the hybrid structure of the adsorbent. The adsorption kinetic curve was well described by the pseudo-second order model. The favorable pH for As(V) was below 8.0, and the adsorbent had good As(V) selectivity over common co-existing anions (SO 4 2−, H 2 PO 4 −, and SiO 3 2−). Moreover, the adsorbent could be readily regenerated using 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution as eluting solution. The adsorption capacity towards As(V) was still over 85% after 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provided an efficient way for recycling spent DCW with minimal efforts. Considering the connectivity characteristics of the logistics infrastructure between adjacent areas, this paper examines the possibility of spatial spillover effects of logistics infrastructure in Chinese regions by applying a spatial Durbin model for the time period 2003–2017 and two sub-periods, 2003–2009 and 2010–2017. At the national level, the results indicate that positive spillover exists in each period of logistics infrastructure. At the regional level, each logistics infrastructure variable's spillover effects vary considerably among China's three macro-regions: land transport in the central and western regions are significantly negative; air transport is positive but not significant in eastern, central, and western regions; water transport is negative in eastern and central regions; courier delivery is not significant in eastern and western regions; internet is negative in eastern and western regions; storage is positive in eastern and central regions. The findings of this study imply that suitable infrastructure investment in states with different development levels could promote regional economic development. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the eighth most common cancer by incidence worldwide. Although the cancer is located at a readily recognizable and accessible site in the body, it is the sixth most common cause of cancer death. The 1- and 5-year survival rates in China are 50% and 15%, respectively. Furthermore, the cancer has distinct geographic and etiological risk factors in different locations around the world. Since ESCC is highly prevalent in the Chaoshan (Southeastern) region of China, this report will focus on a review of risk factors for the cancer in this area. From the review, it is clear that some important and traditional factors are involved, e.g. environmental mutagens, genetic predisposition. However, unique factors, e.g. the drinking of very hot tea, may play an important role. This review highlights the role of complex risk factors (environmental, genetic and cultural) which contribute to the multistage development of cancer: localized injury, inflammation, mitogenesis, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and eventually mortality. The latter is contributed by unnecessary delay in seeking medical care which may be culturally related. The review emphasizes the need to identify causal mechanisms for the complex carcinogenic process which can provide opportunity for prevention and treatment of this potentially curable cancer. Selenium (Se) has been called the "longevity element" by the scientific community because it has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant activity in humans. The geochemical properties and biological functions of Se have been widely studied in various fields, including geology, agriculture, and medicine. Bama Yao Autonomous County (Bama), a typical township in China with high longevity among the population, was selected as the research area. The present study organically combines the geological background, dietary structure, absorption and metabolism, and other biogeochemical aspects to comprehensively analyze the anti-aging properties of Se under high-Se conditions and a fiber-rich polysaccharide diet. Biogeochemical samples of surface soil, food, human hair, and urine were systematically collected from the environment and the residents, and the content and speciation of Se were analyzed. Concentrations of Se in the soil were moderate to high for Bama, with high-Se soil in 77.21% of the samples. Water-soluble Se concentrations were also high, 90% of the samples with moderate to high Se, and had a significant positive correlation with Se concentrations in crops. With both high total and high available Se, dietary samples from the study area showed Se-enriched characteristics. Accordingly, Se intake was also high (82.54 μg/d) in the population, strongly maintaining the normal bodily functions of the elderly. Accumulation and metabolism of Se in the population were assessed based on concentrations of Se in the hair and urine of residents over 60 years old. Continuous accumulation of Se was found to occur from 71 to 80 years of age. Concentrations of Se in residents under 71 years old and over 80 years old were in a state of loss. Overall, Se absorption and metabolism are maintained at the optimal physiological state, which is one of the primary factors maintaining the health and longevity of the elderly people in the study area. A significant bottleneck in port regionalization through multimodal transport chains is expensive and time-consuming inland transport. To be competitive, it is crucial for a port authority to build an effective transport system and develop collection-distribution abilities. Considering shipper preferences, this study proposes a pricing model to describe the markets of competing seaports and discusses several incentive strategies that may or may not bring mutual benefits for shippers and port authorities in the multimodal transport chain, such as the corridor investment strategy, subsidy strategy, and combinational strategy. Based on two adjacent ports in China, a comparative analysis is carried out for evaluating the effects of different strategies. The results show that the corridor investment strategy depends on unit investment capital for improving transport convenience. It is necessary to adopt a differentiated subsidy strategy based on transport distance when considering the subsidy strategy; however, there is a constraint on the subsidy level. The selenium (Se)-deficient soil belt in China has gained widespread attention. During large-scale soil surveys in China, Se-rich soils within low-Se belts have been identified. However, the sources of Se in those soils and the controlling factors for their enrichment remain unclear. Here we summarize Se concentrations and spatial distributions in the Yuanzhou district of the Loess Plateau. We evaluated Se variations in soil profiles, Se migration into water bodies, and considered soil indicators, topographic characteristics and the influence of land-use types on soil Se concentrations. The average Se concentration in the topsoil of the Yuanzhou district was 0.164 μg/g. High-Se soils (>0.222 μg/g) were found in the western valley plain and the southern red bed hilly area, as well as sporadically in higher elevation forestland and grassland areas in the east. Enrichment of Se in the topsoil in the eastern and southern areas was primarily due to Se adsorption and accumulation by soil organic matter as well as enrichment in gypsum, berlinite, and clay minerals during soil formation. Widespread enrichment in the southern area was linked to high Se concentrations in red Tertiary sedimentary rocks. In the western area, enrichment of Se in topsoil was found on both sides of the Qingshui River at low elevations with gentle slopes, with river water being the primary carrier of Se enrichment. These findings provide valuable insights into the epigenetic geochemical behavior of soil Se in China's low-Se belt that accounts for development of Se-rich soils in the region. The abnormal enrichment of cadmium (Cd) in soil caused by rock weathering and mining activities is an issue in southern China. Although the soil Cd content in these regions is extremely high, the bioavailability of Cd in the soils differs significantly. The carbonate area (CBA) and tin-mining area (TIA) in Hezhou City were investigated to determine the primary features of soil Cd mobility in these regions and improve environmental management. Lateral and vertical spatial distributions revealed different accumulation and migration mechanisms of soil Cd in the CBA and TIA. Further analyses revealed that mining activities and geological weathering resulted in different soil geochemical parameters, thus yielding significantly lower levels of Cd in rice grains in the CBA than in the TIA. The random forest (RF) model predicted the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) (R2 = 0.69) better than the support vector machine (SVM) model (R2 = 0.68). Subsequently, a novel land management scheme was proposed based on soil Cd and the prediction of Cd in rice to optimize the spatial resources of agricultural land and ensure the safety of rice for consumption. Lanping basin is a large Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag polymetallic mineral province in SW China, with major deposit types including vein-type Cu deposits, basinal brine-related Pb-Zn deposits (e.g., Liziping, Fulongchang) and minor quartz-vein-type Pb-Zn deposits (e.g., Shangnuluo, Baiji). In this study, we have conducted EPMA and LA-ICP-MS sphalerite trace element analyses, together with gangue carbonate C-O stable isotope analysis and molybdenite Re-Os dating. Using these data, we discuss the mineral assemblage, sphalerite minor/trace element composition, ore-fluid source, and mineralization age of these two types of Pb-Zn deposits. Except sphalerite and galena, major ore minerals from Liziping and Fulongchang are As-rich (e.g., gratonite, jordanite, bournonite, As-rich pyrite), whereas those from Shangnuluo and Baiji are Sb-rich (e.g., boulangerite, jamesonite, stibnite, zinkenite). The trace element compositional characteristics in sphalerite of these deposits (low Mn, Fe, Co, In and Sn, and high Cd) mimic those of medium-low-temperature hydrothermal deposits (MVT and Jinding deposits). For the Liziping zoned sphalerite, the dark-brown zones have relatively high Co, Cu, Ga, As, and Sb; whilst the light-colored zones have relatively high Fe, Mn and Cd. The calculated sphalerite formation temperature based on sphalerite geothermometer – GGIMFis (Frenzel et al., 2016) are basically in agreement with those homogenization temperature of inclusions, indicating that the contents of these elements (Ga, Ge, Fe, Mn and In) in sphalerite are mainly controlled by temperature. Moreover, the estimated sulfur fugacity (log f S 2) for Liziping (−14.7) and Fulongchang (−13.6) are distinctly lower than those for Shangnuluo (−7.1) and Baiji (−8.5). Carbonate C–O isotope compositions indicate that the dissolved carbon and oxygen of ore forming-fluids of these Pb-Zn deposits were mainly derived from sedimentary carbonate dissolution. Early-ore-stage molybdenite from Baiji deposit yielded two Re-Os weighted average model ages of 21.4 Ma and 12.93 Ma, and a Re-Os concordia age of 11.88 ± 0.77 Ma was obtained from four younger molybdenite samples. These ages are distinctly younger than those reported mineralization age (ca. 30 Ma) for basinal brine-related Pb-Zn deposits. The Lanping basin is an important Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag polymetallic province in southwestern (SW) China. Mineralization types in the basin include mainly MVT Pb-Zn deposits, vein-type Cu deposits, and minor quartz vein-type Pb-Zn deposits. In this study, we analyzed the total Hg (THg) content and Hg-S isotopic compositions of sulfides from two types of Pb-Zn deposits in the basin, and investigate the Hg isotope fractionation mechanism and its major controlling factors in the Pb-Zn ore-forming process. At the Shangnuluo quartz vein-type Pb-Zn-Sb deposit, sulfides (especially sphalerite) show a wide δ202Hg range (−0.40 to 2.71‰), suggesting that Hg0 evaporation from hydrothermal fluids occurred during the ore formation. Negative THg vs. δ202Hg correlation in the sphalerites suggests a mixing of Hg from the vapor phase (low δ202Hg, high THg) and the residual aqueous phase (high δ202Hg, low THg). The negative ∆199Hg (−0.42 to −0.08‰) suggests that the Hg was sourced from the metamorphic basement, whereas the negative δ34S values (−13.0 to −2.7‰) suggests that the sulfur was mainly sourced from sedimentary sequences, possibly related to the organic matter decomposition and thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). For the Liziping and Fulongchang MVT Pb-Zn deposits, sulfides have relatively narrow δ202Hg range (−1.46 to 0.25‰), suggesting limited Hg0 evaporation during the mineralization. Lower δ202Hg values were observed in the early-stage sulfides from these two deposits, probably due to the preferential precipitation of lighter Hg isotopes in these early-stage sulfides. Sulfides from both deposits have negative ∆199Hg values (−0.24 to 0.01‰), suggesting that the Hg was also derived from the metamorphic basement. Sulfide δ34S values from the two deposits are positive, which also suggests that the sulfur was sourced from sedimentary sequences, but mainly related to TSR under relatively low-temperatures. Sulfides from different Pb-Zn deposit types in the Sanjiang Tethyans Metallogenic Belt fall into distinct fields in the δ34S vs. δ202Hg (or ∆199Hg) diagrams, indicating that the integration of S and Hg isotopes is useful to discriminate different types of Pb-Zn deposits. Dinoflagellates Prorocentrum donghaiense and Karlodinium veneficum are the dominant species of harmful algal blooms in the East China Sea. The role of their allelopathy on the succession of marine phytoplankton populations is a subject of ongoing debate, particularly concerning the formation of blooms. To explore the allelopathy of K. veneficum on P. donghaiense, an investigation was conducted into photosynthetic performance (including PSII functional activities, photosynthetic electron transport chain, energy flux, photosynthetic different genes and photosynthetic performance) and photosynthetic damage-induced oxidative stress (MDA, SOD, and CAT activity). The growth of P. donghaiense was strongly restrained during the initial four days (1-6 folds, C K /C P ), but the cells gradually resumed activity at low filtrate concentrations from the eighth day. On the fourth day of the strongest inhibition, allelochemicals reduced representative photosynthetic performance parameters PI and Φ PSII , disrupted related processes of photosynthesis, and elevated the levels of MDA content in P. donghaiense. Simultaneously, P. donghaiense repairs these impairments by up-regulating the expression of 13 photosynthetic genes, modifying photosynthetic processes, and activating antioxidant enzyme activities from the eighth day onward. Overall, this study provides an in-depth overview of allelopathic photosynthetic damage, the relationship between genes and photosynthesis, and the causes of oxidative damage induced by photosynthesis. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: As a typical HAB species, Karlodinium veneficum is associated with numerous fish poisoning events, which have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. As a key component of plant nitrogen-fixing enzymes and a variety of human coenzyme factors, molybdenum (Mo) plays an essential role in supporting both plant growth and human health. Soil is a key medium for the cycling of Mo in the biosphere. However, the driving anthropogenic and natural factors governing the spatial distribution of Mo in soil and their interactions are not well understood. To determine the factors that affect the spatial patterns of Mo in topsoil, 6980 samples were collected from the Longitudinal Range-Gorge Region (Linshui County, Sichuan Province, China). In this area, tall mountains are adjacent to deep valleys. Topsoil with enriched Mo is mostly distributed in mountainous areas. The most important factors influencing Mo in topsoil are soil parent materials (q = 0.482), altitude (q = 0.256), and soil type (q = 0.259). There are synergistic effects among the various driving factors [q(X1 ∩ X2) > Max[q(X1), q(X2)]]. The Geodetector model was used to validate the magnitude of the interaction effects. The contribution to interacting factors is nonlinearly enhanced when the contribution of a single factor was low (any two factors of aspect, road distance, land use type, and S). The contribution to interacting factors is enhanced bidirectionally when the contribution of a single factor was high (any two factors of altitude, soil type, soil parent material, OM, and TFe 2 O 3 ). In recent years, the biogeochemical behavior and environmental impact of Selenium (Se) on soil-plant systems have received widespread attention, and traditional statistical methods reveal generally positive correlations between rice Se and soil Se. However, that initial positive relationship may have been obscured by local external factors. Using local scale data from the geochemical evaluation of land quality project, this work employed geographically weighted regression (GWR) to examine the spatial variation of rice Se (as the dependent variable) and soil Se (as the independent variable) in Guangxi. Strong and weak correlation coefficients occur between rice Se and soil Se, thereby indicating that their relationships are spatially varying. Guangxi is characterized by significantly positive correlations in most areas, with weak correlations mostly found in the south-western and central-eastern regions. Areas with weak correlation can be divided into two patterns: high soil Se with low rice Se and high rice Se with low soil Se. The unique patterns are correlated with distinct natural factors, particularly the abundance of Fe-rich soils in the carbonate area; by contrast, sandstone areas in central Guangxi may have been affected by anthropogenic activities. To reveal the spatially varying relationships at the local scale, we employed GWR, an effective tool that allowed us to identify the association between environmental variables and influencing factors and explore spatially varying relationships between them. Selenium (Se) is essential to human health, anti-cancer, possessing antioxidant, and antiviral properties. In this study, the spatial patterns of rice Se and their varying relationship with soil Se on a regional scale were studied using hot spot analysis for the agricultural soils in Guangxi. According to the hot and cold spot maps, rice Se correlates positively with soil Se in Guangxi agricultural soils. High rice Se accompanies high soil Se in the central part of Guangxi (e.g., Liuzhou, Laibin), and low rice Se is in line with low soil Se in the western part (e.g., Baise). However, the hot spot analysis maps indicate that southwestern Guangxi exhibits a special characteristic of low rice Se with high soil Se (e.g., Chongzuo). This special pattern is strongly associated with the high concentrations of Fe 2 O 3 (ferromanganese nodules) in the carbonate rock area. Soils developed in karst regions have naturally high background values of molybdenum (Mo) due to geological factors. However, the enrichment mechanism of Mo in these soils are not fully understood, making it challenging to assess their ecological risk and utilize Mo-rich land resources. To shed light on this issue, this study collected and analyzed data from the 1:50,000 geochemical survey in Guangxi, including 536,503 sets of soil data and 3043 sets of rock data, as well as 40 sets of carbonate rock-soil from typical karst regions. The results showed that soil Mo enrichment is highly correlated with the distribution of carbonate rocks in karst regions. The carbonate rocks in these regions contain Mo ranging from 0.03 to 1.06 mg·kg -1 (with a mean of 0.22 mg·kg -1 ). In comparison, the soil Mo derived from carbonate rocks can reach up to 6.00 mg·kg -1 (with a mean of 2.75 mg·kg -1 ), representing an average enrichment of soil Mo that is 24 times higher compared to the carbonate parent rock. The enrichment of soil Mo in karst regions is primarily controlled by secondary enrichment during the weathering process of carbonate. During the insoluble residue accumulation process, the dissolution of carbonate leads to a dramatic reduction in bedrock volume, and the adsorption of clay minerals and Fe minerals in insoluble residues plays an essential role in Mo enrichment during these stages. During the soil-forming stage of the insoluble residue, most Mo leaches into the water body due to the mineral transformation of insoluble residue. Consequently, as Fe-Mn nodules in soils become more enriched with increasing weathering intensity, some Mo is absorbed and passivated by iron and manganese oxides (hydroxides). Accordingly, the contribution of Fe-Mn nodules and the degree of leaching were closely related to the enrichment of soil Mo in karst regions. The Bohai Bay as a typical semi-enclosed bay in northern China with poor water exchange capacity and significant coastal urbanization, is greatly influenced by land-based inputs and human activities. As a class of pseudo-persistent organic pollutants, the spatial and temporal distribution of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) is particularly important to the ecological environment, and it will be imperfect to assess the ecological risk of PPCPs for the lack of systematic investigation of their distribution in different season. 14 typical PPCPs were selected to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution in the Bohai Bay by combining online solid-phase extraction (SPE) and HPLC-MS/MS techniques in this study, and their ecological risks to aquatic organisms were assessed by risk quotients (RQs) and concentration addition (CA) model. It was found that PPCPs widely presented in the Bohai Bay with significant differences of spatial and seasonal distribution. The concentrations of ∑PPCPs were higher in autumn than in summer. The distribution of individual pollutants also showed significant seasonal differences. The high values were mainly distributed in estuaries and near-shore outfalls. Mariculture activities in the northern part of the Bohai Bay made a greater contribution to the input of PPCPs. Caffeine, florfenicol, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin were the main pollutants in the Bohai Bay, with detection frequencies exceeding 80 %. The ecological risk of PPCPs to algae was significantly higher than that to invertebrates and fish. CA model indicated that the potential mixture risk of total PPCPs was not negligible, with 34 % and 88 % of stations having mixture risk in summer and autumn, respectively. The temporary stagnation of productive life caused by Covid-19 weakened the input of PPCPs to the Bohai Bay, reducing the cumulative effects of the pollutants. To determine whether the national soil heavy metal standards (GB 15618-2018) are applicable to some carbonate and non-carbonate zones in Southwest China, rice and rhizosphere soil samples were collected in Chongqing and analyzed for heavy metal contents, pH, and other chemical parameters. In addition, regression analysis was also used to predict the risk threshold of soil heavy metals. The Cd risk screening value in GB 15618-2018 was strict for alkaline soils (pH > 7.5) as compared to those revealed in carbonate and non-carbonate areas, while the calculated pollution threshold for Cd in acidic soils (pH ≤ 5.5) in the non-carbonate area was lower than that in GB 15618-2018. The contamination status and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the seawater of the Indian Ocean (IO) and an adjacent subregion of the Northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) were investigated. Eight legacy PFASs were widely distributed in the surface seawater, and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were the two predominant PFASs. ΣPFAS concentration decreased in the following order: NWPO>Joining area of Asia and Indian-Pacific Oceans (JAIPO)>Northeast Indian Ocean>Southwest Indian Ocean. Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid, a replacement surfactant for PFOA was extensively detected in the IO (~34.8 pg/L) for the first time, showing an early sign of emerging PFAS spread in global open oceans. Eight depth profiles across the JAIPO (down to 5433 m depth) revealed a "surface-enrichment" and "depth-depletion" pattern for PFASs in the water column, and two noticeable fluctuations were mainly located at depths of 150-200 and 200-500 m. Physical processes, including eddy diffusion, and the origin and trajectory of water mass were crucial factors for structuring PFAS vertical profiles. Background: Identification of frailty is crucial to guide patient care for the elderly. The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is a reliable, synthesis and clinical judgment-based tool. However, a validated Chinese version of CFS (CFS-C) is lacking. The aim of this study is to describe the translation process of CFS into traditional Chinese and to evaluate its reliability and validity in a geriatric study population in Taiwan., Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 221 geriatric outpatients aged 65 years or older at a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. The Chinese version of CFS was produced following Brislin's translation model. Weighted kappa for agreement and Kendall's tau for correlation were used to assess inter-rater reliability (a subgroup of 52 outpatients) between geriatricians and one research assistant, and validity tests (221 outpatients) by comparing CFS-C with Fried frailty phenotype and Frailty Index based on Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (FI-CGA). Correlation between CFS-C and other geriatric conditions were also assessed., Results: The inter-rater reliability revealed moderate agreement (weighted kappa = 0.60) and strong correlation (Kendall's tau = 0.67). For criterion validity, CFS-C categorisation showed fair agreement (weighted kappa = 0.37) and significant correlation (Kendall's tau = 0.46) with Fried frailty phenotype, and higher agreement (weighted kappa = 0.51) and correlation (Kendall's tau = 0.63) with FI-CGA categorisation. CFS-C was significantly correlated with various geriatric assessments, including functional disability, physical performance, hand grip, comorbidity, cognition, depression, and nutrition status. To understand the population characteristics of Collichthys lucidus , an important economic fish in the Pearl River Estuary, the biological characteristics and resource density distribution characteristics of C. lucidus were preliminarily analyzed using bottom trawling by cruises conducted in each spring and autumn during 2017 and 2020. The results showed that the body length and weight of C. lucidus ranged between 22-168 mm and 0.23-103.11 g, respectively. Female individuals were larger than the male ones. The length of sexually mature individuals intensively ranged between 90 mm and 140 mm. Neither of them evidenced the earlier of sexually maturity nor the minimizer of dominant group. The population of C. lucidus in Pearl River estuary still developed in safe status in all, but its habitat downgraded than in 1988, as indicated by the fact that the allometric growth factor ( b =2.9057) of the body length to body weight had no significant annual variations, but the conditional factor ( a =3.029×10 -5 ) was drama-tically decreased than in 1988. The population was at a state of overexploitation due to the estimated exploitation rate of 0.67. The resource density averaged 77.73 kg·km -2 , showing a pattern of higher in the middle and west than in the east and relatively uniform of latitudinal distribution. The four high densities of sampling zones suggested that the zone around Nansha Port was probably the core of spawning ground of C. lucidus . Considering the annual average resource density in 2017-2020 sharply decreased by 93.5% than in 1980 to 1982, it was pressing to establish the protection zone in spawning ground in spring to protect the recruiting and spawning stocks of C. lucidus population.

Background: Plenty of studies have indicated that some genetic polymorphisms of the breast cancer which associated with its susceptibility may also be related to the susceptibility of abortion. MIR2052HG plays an important role in the onset and progression of breast cancer by maintaining the level of ERα, but to the best of our knowledge, the correlation between risk of recurrent abortion and MIR2052HG rs3802201 C>G polymorphism is still unclear. Therefore, we conducted this case-control study to investigate whether MIR2052HG rs3802201 C>G polymorphism is associated with susceptibility of recurrent miscarriage (RM)., Methods: We recruited 392 healthy controls and 248 patients with RM to process this research, the participants were all from southern China, and genotyping was performed by TaqMan method., Results: Our results showed that there was no evidence indicates the MIR2052HG rs3802201 C>G is related to RM (CG and CC: adjusted OR = 0.970, 95% CI = 0.694-1.355, p = 0.8577; GG and CC: adjusted OR = 0.743, 95% CI = 0.416-1.330, p = 0.3174; dominant model: adjusted OR = 0.925, 95% CI = 0.672-1.272, p = 0.6298; recessive model: adjusted OR = 0.751, 95% CI = 0.430-1.321, p = 0.3233)., Conclusion: We verified that the MIR2052HG rs3802201 C>G allele might be uncorrelated to the RM risk, but these findings require further validation in multicenter studies with larger sample size and different ethnicities., (© 2021 The Authors. A mesocosm experiment was conducted on the Qingdao coast to study the effects of nutrient enrichment on the physiological responses of Ulva prolifera and the changes in the entire culture system during decomposition of algal blooms. The decomposition trend of U. prolifera off the Qingdao coast was slightly retarded by nutrient enrichment, and could not be reversed to positive growth. The decomposition of U. prolifera was divided into two stages: the early-stage (0-9 d) and the late-stage (9-19 d). High nutrient levels enhanced the amounts of carbon and nitrogen fixed by U. prolifera and accelerated the subsequent degradation of organic matter. The concentration and composition of amino acids in solution also changed, reducing the bioavailability of dissolved organic matter in seawater. This study evaluated the actual decomposition process of green tides, which will help to assess the impact of green tides on coastal ecosystems and the circulation of biogenic elements., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Background: There is an increasing demand for minimally invasive aortic valve replacement. This study aimed to investigate the safety and feasibility of minimally invasive aortic valve replacement through a right parasternal second intercostal transverse incision., Methods: This was a retrospective study, and we collected information from 111 patients who underwent isolated aortic valve replacement surgery performed by the same surgeon from January 2018 to December 2019. According to the operative approach, the patients were divided into a sternotomy aortic valve replacement (SAVR) group (n = 62) and a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (Mini-AVR) group (n = 49). We compared the intraoperative and postoperative data between the two groups., Result: There was no difference in preoperative data between the Mini-AVR and SAVR. The postoperative ventilator-assisted time, CSICU time and postoperative hospital stay of the Mini-AVR were shorter than those of the SAVR [(15.45 ± 5.75) VS (18.51 ± 6.71) h; (1.77 ± 0.31) VS (2.04 ± 0.63) d; (8.69 ± 2.75) VS (10.77 ± 2.94) d], and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Mini-AVR had lower postoperative drainage and blood transfusion rates in the first 24 h than SAVR [(109.86 ± 125.98) VS (508.84 ± 311.70) ml; 22.4% VS 46.8%], and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The incidence of postoperative AF in the Mini-AVR group was also lower than that in the SAVR group (10.2% VS 30.6%), and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Mini-AVR has the advantages of less ventilator time, a reduced need for blood transfusion, less AF and a faster recovery. County transit is an important mode that connects the county center with the surrounding countryside. This paper addresses the problem of unreasonable transit network planning, inconvenient operational optimizations, and protections in the country transit network system to build the transfer optimization model of the county transit network. The model that maximizes the synchronization reach operates in the "end-point connection", which is the most suitable layout mode by analyzing the characteristics of county transit passenger flow and for comparing different layout modes. Typical county-level cities in three urban agglomerations in China were chosen as cases to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed model. The case results are compared and analyzed in terms of the network density, departure interval, county population, and economic development level, which give theoretical support for decision-making in the planning, construction, and operation management of public transportation in China's counties.

Balamuthia mandrillaris infection is a rare and fatal disease. We have recorded 28 cases of Balamuthia mandrillaris infection during the past 20 years. Eighteen patients (64%) were male and 10 (36%) were female. Patient age ranged from 3 to 74 (mean, 27) years. Patient locations were distributed among 12 Provinces in China. Twenty-seven (96%) patients lived in rural areas, and 17 (61%) patients reported a history of trauma before the appearance of skin lesions. All cases presented with skin lesions as the primary symptom, and 16 (57%) cases developed encephalitis. Histopathology of skin lesions revealed granulomatous changes with histiocytes, lymphocytes, and plasma cells infiltration. Amebas were identified in all cases with immunohistochemical staining. Follow-up information was available in 27 (96%) cases. Fifteen (56%) patients died due to encephalitis and 12 (44%) were free of disease after treatment. Our results show that the clinical characteristics of Balamuthia mandrillaris infection in China are very different from those in the US. Infection of traumatized skin may play an important role in the pathogenesis of the disease in China. Encephalitis usually develops 3-4 years after skin lesions in Chinese cases. Patients with only skin lesions have a higher cure rate than patients with encephalitis.

Porcine pegiviruses (PPgV) have been first discovered in serum samples from domestic pigs in Germany in 2016 and then in the USA in 2018. To date, there is no documentation with respect to the presence of PPgVs in domestic pigs in China. Herein, we attempted to determine the presence and prevalence of PPgV in China and its genetic characterization. In this study, 469 sera were tested and 34 (7.25%) were positive for PPgV. An ascending trend of the positive rate for PPgV was observed from suckling piglets (1.61%) to nursing piglets (1.85%), finishing pigs (6.56%), and sows (11.34%). The complete genome sequence of a representative strain of PPgV, PPgV&#95;GDCH2017, and the complete E2 gene of 17 PPgV isolates discovered in this study was determined. Sequence analysis indicated that PPgV&#95;GDCH2017 was highly related to other PPgVs with nucleotide and amino acid identities ranging from 87.3 to 97.4% and 94.6-99.3%, respectively, in the complete coding region. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the PPgV&#95;GDCH2017 discovered in this study was closely related to the PPgVs from the USA and clustered in the same genus with pegiviruses from other hosts. The topology of the phylogenetic tree based on the complete E2 gene was consistent with that based on the complete genome of PPgV. Further studies on pathogenicity and pathogenesis of PPgVs are needed.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence and mutation types of G6PD deficiency and evaluate the relationship between G6PD genotypes and erythrocyte phenotypes in the Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups in the Dehong prefecture of the Yunnan province, China., Methods: G6PD deficiency was screened in Dai (1,530 individuals) and Jingpo (372 individuals) populations using a modified G6PD/6PGD ratio assay. Red blood cell traits were analyzed using the Sysmex XE2100 fully automated blood analyzer. PCR-direct sequencing for G6PD genotyping analysis was performed, and then the linkage disequilibrium blocks of the target SNPs were constructed with Haploview 4.2 software., Results: The prevalence of G6PD deficiency was higher in the Dai ethnic group (8.63%) than in the Jingpo ethnic group (5.91%). The major mutations in descending order were rs137852314 G>A, rs72554664 G>A, rs72554665 G>T, and rs137852341 G>T. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly lower in the rs137852314 G>A group than in the normal group (p = 0.021). Mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were substantially higher in the rs137852341 G>T group compared to the normal group (p = 0.049, p = 0.042). A linkage disequilibrium block of 13 SNPs was constructed for the G6PD deficiency group from the Dai sample., Conclusions: The Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups have distinctive incidence rates and gene frequencies of G6PD deficiency, and the genotypes of G6PD deficiency are associated with erythrocyte phenotypes., (© 2018 S. The clavicle has a complex geometry that makes plate fixation technically difficult. The current study aims to measure the anatomical parameters of Chinese clavicles as reference for plate design . One hundred clavicles were analyzed. The clavicle bone model was reconstructed by using computed tomography images. The length, diameters, and curvatures of the clavicle were then measured. The female clavicle was shorter, more slender, and less curved in lateral part than the male clavicle. There was a positive relationship between height and clavicle parameters except lateral curve and depth. The measurements of Chinese clavicles were generally smaller than Caucasians. The clavicle curves were correlated with the bone length; thus consideration of the curve variations may be necessary as designing size distribution of clavicle plate.

Cadmium is a ubiquitous carcinogenic pollutant with multiple biological effects. Both observational and experimental studies have suggested associations between cadmium and the rates of many types of cancers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether cadmium exposure is associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in a population with a relatively high prevalence in southeast China. Hospital-based 134 NPC cases and 132 cancer-free controls were recruited from a cancer hospital in Chaoshan area, southeast of China. Basic clinical data and information of lifetime styles, smoking, and drinking as well as other demographic characteristics were also collected from medical records. Blood cadmium levels (BCLs) were detected by graphite-furnace atomizer absorption spectrophotometer (GFAAS). BCLs and over-limit ratios between cases and controls were compared. The relationships between BCLs and NPC were explored by comparing BCLs differences between/among different characteristics of related factors and logistic regression analysis. In addition, BCLs within cases were also compared in relation to the disease clinical stages, pathological types, and metastasis. The median concentration of blood cadmium in cases (3.84, interquartile range 2.21-6.10) was significantly higher than that of controls (2.28, interquartile range 1.79-3.45). The over-limit ratio (≥5 μg/L) in cases was also higher than that in controls (35.1 vs. 13.6%, χ(2) = 16.55, p < 0.001). Smokers tended to have high levels of cadmium burden, and smokers with longer smoking pack-years in cases had relatively higher BCLs (p = 0.001). NPC patients with diseases history presented lower cadmium burden (p = 0.020). In the NPC cases, BCLs were positively associated with clinical stages and N classification (r = 0.193, 0.187, respectively, p < 0.05). Cadmium seems to be a risk factor of NPC, and high cadmium exposure may promote the occurrence and development of NPC.

Background: Obesity is considered to be related to recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF), left atrial thrombus formation, and atrial remodeling. However, whether obesity is an independent risk factor for stroke and other thromboembolic events is still controversial., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of body mass index (BMI) on the risks of stroke, thromboembolism, and mortality in AF patients., Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with nonvalvular AF were included in this observational, retrospective study. The study population was stratified by BMI at baseline. The Cox proportional hazard model was adopted to calculate adjusted hazard ratios of risk factors for adverse clinical events (stroke, thromboembolism, and mortality)., Results: A total of 1286 AF patients (males, 78.30%; mean age, 74.50 years; 94.48% paroxysmal AF) were followed up for a median of 2.1 years (IQR: 1.5-2.9 years). Overall, 159 patients died. A total of 84 strokes and 35 thromboembolic events occurred. Multivariate analysis showed that overweight (25.0≤BMI<30.0 kg/m2) and age ≥75 years were independent risk factors for ischemic stroke (both P<0.01). Obesity (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2), age ≥75 years, persistent/permanent AF, and prior thromboembolism were independent risk factors for thromboembolism (all P<0.05). Underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), age ≥75 years, prior ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack, renal dysfunction, and heart failure were independent risk factors for all-cause deaths (all P<0.05)., Conclusions: Overweight or obesity may be a risk factor of ischemic stroke and thromboembolism in AF patients. Excessive low weight is significantly associated with increased all-cause mortality.

Background: To analyze the mortality distribution of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in China from 1991 to 2013, to predict the mortality in the ensuing five years, and to provide evidence for prevention and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma., Materials and Methods: Mortality data for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in China from 1991 to 2013 were used to describe its epidemiological characteristics, such as the change of the standardized mortality rate, sex and age differences, urban-rural differences. Trend-surface analysis was used to study the geographical distribution of the mortality. Curve estimation, time series, gray modeling, and joinpoint regression were used to predict the mortality for the ensuing five years in the future., Results: In China, the standardized mortality rate of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma increased with time from 1996, reaching the peak values of 1.45 /105 at the year of 2002, and decreased gradually afterwards. With males being 1.51 times higher than females, and the city had a higher rate than the rural during the past two decades. The mortality rate increased from age 40. Geographical analysis showed the mortality rate increased from middle to southern China., Conclusions: The standardized mortality rate of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma is falling. The regional disease control for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma should be focused on Guangdong province of China, and the key targets for prevention and treatment are rural men, especially after the age of 40. The mortality of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma will decrease in the next five years.
