Clarifying current situation of farmers' fertilization and yield in citrus producing areas and the effects of different fertilization measures can provide a scientific basis for improving the yield and quality of citrus in China. We retrieved 92 literatures on citrus fertilization from the CNKI and Web of Science to examine the impacts of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P or P 2 O 5 ), and potassium (K or K 2 O) fertilizer dosage and partial productivity under farmers' conventional fertilization and experts' optimized fertilization, as well as the effects of optimized fertilization measures on citrus yield and quality by using meta-analysis approach. The average conventional application rates of N, P 2 O 5 , and K 2 O were 507.3, 262.2, and 369.3 kg·hm -2 in citrus production in China. Compared with conventional fertilization, optimized fertilization resulted in a reduction of N and P 2 O 5 by 14.7% and 8.3%, an increase in K 2 O application by 6.6%, which promoted partial productivity of N, P 2 O 5 , and K 2 O fertilizers by 7.8%, 18.4%, and 14.7%, correspondingly. The optimized fertilization resulted in 11.9% and 2.8% increase in fruit yield and single fruit weight, while improved vitamin C content (Vc, 3.1%), total soluble solids (TSS, 5.9%) and total sugar content (TSC, 8.6%). Additionally, it also led to a reduction in titratable acid (TA, -3.4%) and total acid content (TAC, -3.6%), and consequently elevated the TSS/TA (14.0%) and TSC/TAC (9.5%). Among different optimized fertilization methods, the effect of optimized NPK + medium and/or micro element fertilizer on citrus yield and fruit quality was the best, especially NPK decrement ≤25% between optimized NPK measures. The effect of conventional NPK + organic fertilizer was higher than conventional NPK + medium and/or micro element fertilizer. However, different citrus varieties, including mandarins, pomelos, and oranges, showed different responses to optimized fertilization. Optimized fertilization management could synergistically improve citrus yield, fertilizer use efficiency, and fruit quality. Therefore, the strategy of integrated nutrient management1 with reducing NPK fertilizer, balancing medium and/or micro nutrient fertilizer and improving soil fertility by organic fertilizer should be adopted according to local conditions in citrus producing areas of China.

We investigated the antifungal susceptibility profiles of 207 independent Candida albicans strains isolated from patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) in Xinjiang Province of China. Using CLSI M27-A3 and M27-S4 guidelines, anidulafungin and micafungin were the most active drugs against C. albicans showing an MIC 50 /MIC 90 corresponding to 0.016/0.0313 µg/mL, followed by caspofungin (0.25/0.25 µg/mL), posaconazole (0.125/0.5 µg/mL), ravuconazole (0.063/1 µg/mL), itraconazole (0.125/1 µg/mL), amphotericine B (0.5/1 µg/mL), isavuconazole (0.063/2 µg/mL), 5-flucytosine (1/2 µg/mL), voriconazole (0.125/4 µg/mL), and fluconazole (0.5/4 µg/mL). 96.1% (199)-100.0% (207) isolates were sensitive to the three echinocandins tested, amphotericine B and 5-flucytosine. The in vitro activity of triazoles against all isolates tested was variable; itraconazole and voriconazole had reduced the activity to almost half of the isolates (55.1% (114) and 51.2% (106) susceptible, respectively). Fluconazole was active against 76.3% (158) isolates tested. The new triazoles ravuconazole, isavuconazole and posaconazole showed good in vitro potency against 89.9% (186)-95.2% (197) of isolates with the geometric mean MIC (µg/mL) of 0.10, 0.12 and 0.14 µg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, our study indicates that for effective management of systemic candidiasis in Xinjiang Province of China, it is important to determine the susceptibility profiles of isolated C. albicans from patients with VVC.

Cryptococcosis is a life-threatening mycosis primarily occurring in adult patients particularly those with immunosuppression such as HIV infection/AIDS. The number of reported cases of paediatric cryptococcosis has increased in the last decade around the world, including China. However, current information on the characteristics of cryptococcosis in children, particularly the genotypic diversity and antifungal susceptibility of the isolates, is limited. In the present study, a total of 25 paediatric isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans were genotyped using the ISHAM-MLST scheme. In vitro susceptibility to antifungal agents of the 22 isolates was tested using the CLSI M27-A3 method. Our analyses revealed that the genotypic diversity of C. neoformans isolates from Chinese paediatric patients was low, with ST 5 (80%) and ST 31 (12%) being the two major sequence types. Reduced susceptibility to fluconazole (FLU), 5-flucytosine (5-FC) and itraconazole (ITR) was observed among C. neoformans isolates from Chinese paediatric patients, particularly among the ST5 isolates, which was similar to observations made on C. neoformans isolates from Chinese adult patients. In addition, the majority of isolates (3/4, 75%) obtained from deceased patients showed decreased antifungal susceptibility, which indicates that further monitoring of antifungal susceptibility of Cryptococcus isolates is warranted in management of paediatric cryptococcosis., (© 2018 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.)

Background: Cryptococcosis is a severe fungal infection with a high mortality rate among solid-organ transplant recipients. Today, China is among the countries performing the most kidney transplants worldwide, however data on the association of cryptococcosis with kidney transplantation in mainland China remain scarce and fragmented., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed cases of culture-confirmed cryptococcosis following kidney transplantation that have occurred at our hospital and reviewed the published cases in China over the last 30 years., Results: Cryptococcosis in kidney transplant recipients was mainly caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii VNI strains and occurred most frequently in patients aged 41-50 years (37.9%, 11/29). The average time to infection after kidney transplantation was 5.16 ± 3.97 years. The clinical manifestations were found to be diverse, with slight to moderate headache and fever, meningeal irritation, and high cerebrospinal fluid pressure being relatively common. Physicians should be alert to these symptoms among kidney transplant recipients., Conclusions: Cryptococcosis is a serious infection among kidney transplant recipients in mainland China. It has unique characteristics, such as a relatively long time to onset after kidney transplantation, and diverse clinical manifestations. Treatment with intrathecal injection of amphotericin B is considered effective for central nervous system involvement. The findings of this study also highlight the urgent need for multicenter, prospective, and multidisciplinary clinical studies and education on cryptococcosis in kidney transplant recipients in China., (Copyright © 2014 The Authors. Background and Aims: Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) has gradually increased in the recent 20 years in the whole world. Although the mortality decreased significantly in recent years, it was still high, especially in patients with persistent infection. Therefore, we compare differences of clinical features between persistent and nonpersistent CM patients., Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records of patients diagnosed with CM from January 2000 to December 2011 in four centers in China, including demographic features, underlying diseases, clinical presentations, laboratory data, and so on., Results: Of 106 CM patients enrolled, 16 were identified as persistent cases. Among all variables, persistent CM patients were more like to be human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) infection (P < 0.05), stiff neck (P < 0.01), a serum hemoglobin < 90 g/L (P < 0.01), a serum potassium concentration <2.7 mg/L (P < 0.01), an intracranial pressure (ICP) >400 mmH2 O (P < 0.01), and a latex agglutination cryptococcal antigen titer of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF LACT) >1:1024 (P < 0.01) than nonpersistent ones. A multivariate analysis showed that HIV infection (OR 7.49), stiff neck (OR 11.7), a serum potassium <2.7 mmol/L (OR 9.45), and an ICP >400 mmH2 O (OR 6.83) were closely correlated with persistent CM., Conclusions: Although it is difficult to deal with persistent CM nowadays, some cases could be predicted early enough in the future, so as to be treated appropriately and have relatively good outcomes., (© 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Objective: To summarize the recent findings on the epidemiology of medically important, opportunistic invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in China and discuss the relevant social, economical reasons and medical factors., Data Sources: We performed a comprehensive search of both English and Chinese literatures of opportunistic IFIs from China up to April 2012., Study Selection: Relevant literatures involving researches and cases/case series were identified, retrieved and reviewed., Results: The incidence of opportunistic IFIs in China was steadily increasing. The incidence and mortality of IFIs were different in patients with various underlying conditions/diseases, from 4.12% to 41.18% and 9.8% to 60.0%, respectively. Candida species, Aspergillus species and Cryptococcus neoformans species complex were the most frequent isolated pathogens. Other uncommon opportunistic IFIs were also been reported, including trichosporonosis, mucormycosis, hyalohyphomycosis (hyaline hyphomycetes) and phaeohyphomycosis (dematiaceous hyphomycetes). Reports of Chinese patients differed from those of many other countries as there were a higher number of patients without identifiable underlying diseases/conditions., Conclusions: Because of the rapid economic development, changing population structure and a growing number of immunocompromised hosts with risk factors, today opportunistic IFIs in China have a significant impact on public health, associated with high morbidity/mortality and higher care costs. Now information related to the epidemiology of opportunistic IFIs in China is still sparse, so we need more organized groups of clinical scientists performing related researches to help the clinicians to obtain more accurate epidemiological characteristics.

Background: Despite recent reports on the molecular epidemiology of cryptococcal infections in China, clinical isolates have been mostly reported from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative patients, and environmental isolates from China have rarely been included. The aim of this study was to investigate the ecological profile of Cryptococcus (C.) neoformans and C. gattii in China., Methods: A survey was performed in 10 cities from 20°N (North latitude) to 50°N and in a Eucalyptus (E.) camaldulensis forestry farm at the Guixi forestry center, China., Results: Six hundred and twenty samples of pigeon droppings from 10 cities and 819 E. camaldulensis tree samples were collected and inoculated on caffeic acid cornmeal agar (CACA). The brown-colored colonies were recultured to observe their morphology, growth on canavanine-glycine-bromothymol-blue (CGB) medium, phenol oxidase and urease activities, serotype and mating type. There were obvious differences in the positive sample rates of C. neoformans in pigeon droppings collected from the different cities, ranging from 50% in the cities located at latitudes from 30°N - 40°N, 29% at 20°N - 30°N and 13% at 40°N - 50°N., Conclusions: There were no differences in positive bevy rates (approximately 80%) among the three grouped cities. Mycological tests of 101 isolates purified from pigeon droppings revealed that they were C. neoformans var. grubii. We also observed variable capsular size around the C. neoformans cells in colonies with variable melanin production and the bio-adhesion of the natural C. neoformans cells with other microorganisms. One urease-negative C. neoformans isolate was isolated from pigeon droppings in Jinan city. No C. gattii was isolated in this study.

This epidemiological survey was a retrospective study on three nodes during the past three decades on fungal infections representing the China, including Taiwan. Owing to rare publications reporting on dynamic epidemiological trends in the pathogen epidemiology in China, we surveyed the isolation rates and pathogenic fungi from 8 representative districts in China using uniform identification with uniform methodology. The pathogenic fungi isolation rates and species obtained from 1986 (n=9,096), 1996 (n=19,009), and 2006 (n=33,022) suggested that Trichophyton rubrum was the commonest organism cultured in 1980s (45.4%) and 1990s (34.5%), but Candida albicans increased significantly and reaching to its peak (26.9%) in 2006s' survey, and has become the most common isolate of fungal infections in China currently. In addition, Candida glabrata became the most common non-albicans species of Candida in 2006s' survey. At the same time, the incidence of molds also gradually increased. According to comparative analysis of the results of these three surveys, we found apparent differences in the isolation rates of different pathogenic fungi and the forefront 10 species in China varied significantly, and the dermatophytes decreased markedly, while yeasts, especially the Candida species and the molds, increased gradually during the past three decades. 1. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic disorder that has a complex set of symptoms and potentially devastating consequences. Increasing evidence indicates that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are responsible for the development of HCM, but the mtDNA mutations appear to differ considerably among different populations and regions. 2. In the present study, three families with HCM were found and investigated: one in Shandong province and two in the Chongqing region of China. The entire mtDNA genome from the 18 affected and 66 unaffected family members was sequenced directly and the mtDNA mutations were determined. 3. The frequency of haplogroup M10 was significantly higher in family members with HCM (HCM group) than in unaffected family members (normal group). Three mtDNA mutations were found with a significantly higher frequency in affected individuals than in unaffected family individuals, namely G7697A in the cytochrome c oxidase subunit II gene (P < 0.0001; odds ratio (OR) 227.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) 23.6–2194.8) and T12477C (P = 0.0037; OR 5.6; 95% CI 1.8–17.6) and G13135A in the NADH dehydrogenase 5 gene (P < 0.0001; OR 26.0; 95% CI 6.9–98.3), suggesting that these mutations are probably associated with susceptibility to HCM. In addition, mitochondrial Complex I activity was markedly decreased in the HCM group, suggesting that these mutations most likely affect mitochondrial respiratory function. 4. In conclusion, the results of the present study imply that mtDNA mutations G7697A, T12477C and G13135A are genetic factors that indicate a susceptibility to HCM and that could be used for the large-scale screening of genetic markers as well as the early diagnosis of HCM.

Background: Emerging evidence indicates that maternal oxidative stress during pregnancy could impair fetal growth and that antioxidant vitamins (e.g. vitamins A, E and C) have a significant role in maintaining physiological processes of pregnancy and growth., Aims: To determine the concentrations of vitamins A, E, and C in pair-matched maternal and cord serum samples of neonate, and thus to investigate the relationship between maternal serum levels of these vitamins at delivery and birth outcomes., Methods: A total of 143 mother-neonate pairs were recruited into the cross-sectional descriptive study. Demographic information was investigated by questionnaire. After delivery, both cord and maternal blood were collected for quantification of serum levels of vitamins A, E and C by HPLC., Results: Maternal serum levels of vitamins A and E were significantly higher than those in cord serum. In contrast, vitamin C level in cord serum was significantly higher than that in maternal serum. Further, we found that maternal vitamin A status was significantly correlated to both birth weight (r=0.19, p=0.0419) and birth height (r=0.21, p=0.0311), and these were manifested by these findings: (i) per 250.2 g reduction in birth weight concomitant with 1 micromol/L increase in maternal serum vitamin A level (p<0.01; 95% CI: 56.9-451.5); and (ii) per 1% increase in the ratio of serum vitamin A level of neonate to mother concomitant with 0.8 cm increase in birth height (p=0.049; 95% CI: 0.004-1.639)., Conclusion: Maternal vitamin A, but not vitamins E and C, during pregnancy had a significant effect on birth outcomes. Further studies are necessary to investigate the role of these antioxidant vitamins in fetal growth at various gestation stages.

Mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphisms (mtSNPs) have been reported to associate with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but mtSNPs appear to be considerably different among different populations and regions. To determine mtSNPs in Chinese Han patients with T2DM, the entire sequences of the mitochondrial genomes from 72 T2DM Chinese (59 +/- 4 years) and 50 age-matched healthy subjects (controls) in Chongqing region of Western China were directly sequenced and mtSNPs were analyzed. We found that M8, M9, D, G, R and A haplogroups exist in Chinese Han population and the frequency of haplogroup M9 was significantly higher in patients with T2DM than in the controls (p = 0.0006, OR 0.06 [95% CI 0.008-0.476]). MtSNPs T3394C in NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1), G4491A in ND2, T16189C and T16519C were found with significantly higher frequency in patients with T2DM than in the controls (T16189C, p = 0.0045; T16519C, p < 0.0001; T3394C, p = 0.0015; G4491A, p = 0.0015). In contrast, the frequency of C5178A in ND2 and A10398G in ND3 was higher in the controls than in patients with T2DM (C5178A, p = 0.014; A10398G, p = 0.0011). Our results indicate that mtSNPs T3394C, G4491A, T16189C and T16519C show susceptible tendency to T2DM and mtSNPs C5178A and A10398G seem to be genetic factors for against T2DM. These mtSNPs determined in our study is useful and could be used for early diagnosis and prevention of T2DM in Chinese Han population.

The cDNAs encoding glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were cloned and sequenced from the liver of three Chinese carps with different tolerance to hepatotoxic microcystins, phytoplanktivorous silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), and herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). Using genome walker method, a 750 bp 5'-flanking region of the silver carp GPx gene was obtained, and several potential regulatory elements were identified in the promoter region of the GPx gene. The silver carp GPx gene was widely expressed in all tissues examined. Despite phylogenetic analysis, assigning this newly described carp GPx to the group of mammalian GPx2, the carp GPx seems more similar to GPx1 from a physiological point of view. The constitutive expression pattern of the three carp liver GPx gene, shows a positive relationship with their tolerance to microcystins.

Two full-length cDNAs encoding glutathione S-transferase (GST) were cloned and sequenced from the hepatopancreas of planktivorous silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis). The silver carp and bighead carp GST cDNA were 920 and 978 bp in length, respectively, and both contained an open reading frame that encoding 223 amino acids. Partial GST cDNA sequences were also obtained from the liver of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), crucian carp (Carassius auratu), mud carp (Cirrhinus molitorella), and tilapia (Oreochromis nilotica). All these GSTs could be classified as alpha-class GSTs on the basis of their amino acid sequence identity with other species. The three-dimensional structure of the silver carp GST was predicted using a computer program, and was found to fit the classical two-domain GST structure. Using the genome walker method, a 875-bp 5'-flanking region of the silver carp GST gene was obtained, and several lipopolysaccharide (LPS) response elements were identified in the promoter region of the phytoplanktivorous fish GST gene, indicating that the GST gene expression of this fish might be regulated by LPS, released from the toxic blue-green algae producing microcystins. To compare the constitutive expression level of the liver GST gene among the six freshwater fishes with completely different tolerance to microcystins, beta-actin was used as control and the ratio GST/beta-actin mRNA (%) was determined as 130.7 +/- 6.6 (grass carp), 103.1 +/- 8.9 (bighead carp), 92.6 +/- 15.0 (crucian carp), 72.3 +/- 7.8 (mud carp), 58.8 +/- 11.5 (silver carp), and 33.6 +/- 13.7 (tilapia). The constitutive expression level of the liver GST gene clearly shows that all the six freshwater fishes had a negative relationship with their tolerance to microcystins: high-resistant fishes (phytoplanktivorous silver carp and tilapia) had the lowest tolerance to microcystins and the high-sensitive fish (herbivorous grass carp) had the highest tolerance to microcystins. Taken together with the reciprocal relationship of constitutive and inducible liver GST expression level in some of the tested fish species to microcystin exposure, a molecular mechanism for different microcystin detoxification abilities of the warm freshwater fishes was discussed., ((c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
