Background: Social factors play an important role in adolescents' behaviors. This study aims to understand percentages of health risk behaviors across country in Europe, North America, and China; explore the associations between friendly school and family contexts and involvement for several health risk behaviors among adolescents. Methods: Data derived from health behavior in school-aged children cross-sectional surveys and China Education Panel Survey in 2014-2015. Hierarchical generalized linear modeling was used to analyze data. Results: The highest percentages of health risk behaviors including unhealthy diet, smoking or alcohol, screen-based sedentary behaviors, and violent behaviors across country ranged from 28.62% to 65.24%. National classmate friendliness was negatively associated with 5 out of 9 health risk behaviors prevalence rates in 41 countries (p < 0.05). Adolescents' perceived peer friendly and helpful were common protective factor for engaging in several health risk behaviors (p < 0.01). Individual family contexts were associated with 3 types of health risk behaviors involvement (p < 0.001). School health policy implications: Health risk behaviors among adolescents reducing was associated with the implementation of friendly school and family contexts, emphasizing the significance of the goals of embedding friendly adolescents, along with the home-school collaboration. Conclusions: Public health strategies should promote national climate of friendship and individual perceived friendly school contexts to reduce health risk behaviors.

This study compared holistic and analytic marking methods for their effects on parameter estimation (of examinees, raters, and items) and rater cognition in assessing speech act production in L2 Chinese. Seventy American learners of Chinese completed an oral Discourse Completion Test assessing requests and refusals. Four first-language (L1) Chinese raters evaluated the examinees' oral productions using two four-point rating scales. The holistic scale simultaneously included the following five dimensions: communicative function, prosody, fluency, appropriateness, and grammaticality; the analytic scale included sub-scales to examine each of the five dimensions. The raters scored the dataset twice with the two marking methods, respectively, and with counterbalanced order. They also verbalized their scoring rationale after performing each rating. Results revealed that both marking methods led to high reliability and produced scores with high correlation; however, analytic marking possessed better assessment quality in terms of higher reliability and measurement precision, higher percentages of Rasch model fit for examinees and items, and more balanced reference to rating criteria among raters during the scoring process.

This study looks at the educational experiences, from the preschool years to advanced professional training in STEM fields, of a targeted sample of 10 (7 male, 3 female) early college entrants in China who later became professors at prestigious USA research universities. The purpose of the study was to find out (1) what some identifiable endogenous factors were about these individuals that facilitated the success of their accelerated learning and development; (2) what kinds of exogenous factors (e.g., environmental opportunities, resources, support) they experienced from childhood to adulthood that enhanced the successful acceleration experience; and (3) how these endogenous and exogenous factors facilitated their developmental transitions every step of the way, especially from the role of a student to that of an aspiring scientist. These questions are addressed in light of evolving complexity theory. Retrospective interviews were used for data collection. Thematic analysis of the codes from interview data yielded a conceptual map. A distinct set of endogenous and exogenous factors at different developmental junctures were identified, and their dynamic interplay was delineated to account for accelerated trajectories toward a scientific research career. The theoretical significance and practical implications of the study for talent development in science are discussed.

Urban land serves as the medium for urban economic and residential activity. The degree of intensive and efficient use of urban land and the coordinated growth of the economy and society are significantly impacted by utilization efficiency. Northwest China's temperature, geography, water, and soil characteristics make less of the region suited for urban development. Thus, it is imperative to investigate Northwest China's urban land use efficiency (ULUE). This study applies the efficiency loss model to highlight the discrepancy between the optimal and actual values of each input-output variable of the ULUE, and uses the Super-SBM model to compute the ULUE of 39 cities. Additionally, the internal driving elements of the ULUE are examined using the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) index. This study discovered that Northwest China had a low ULUE, with a modest upward trend seen between 2004 and 2018. The overall shape of the region was similar to an 'N' curve, with high efficiency values concentrated in the southeast of the region in 2018. When considering the agglomeration impact of urban agglomeration, these results are dependable. Moreover, the efficiency loss model discovered that pollution and wasteful resource usage were the main reasons behind the drop in ULUE in Northwest China. Finally, the GML index and its constituents revealed that the main force behind ULUE's growth in Northwest China is technological developments. This research provides important policy implications for reducing the gap between eastern and western regions, supporting high-quality development in northwest China, and protecting and intensively using urban land. Background: Non-pharmacological interventions have a myriad of available intervention options and contain multiple components. Whether specific components of non-pharmacological interventions or combinations are superior to others remains unclear. The main aim of this study is to compare the effects of different combinations of non-pharmacological interventions and their specific components on health-related outcomes in adults with subjective cognitive decline. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, Web of Science, and China's two largest databases, CNKI and Wanfang, were searched from inception to 22nd, January 2023. Randomized controlled trials using non-pharmacological interventions and reporting health outcomes in adults with subjective cognitive decline were included. Two independent reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Component network meta-analysis was conducted employing an additive component model for network meta-analysis. This study followed the PRISMA reporting guideline and the PRISMA checklist is presented in Additional file 2. Results: A total of 39 trials with 2959 patients were included (range of mean ages, 58.79–77.41 years). Resistance exercise might be the optimal intervention for reducing memory complaints in adults with subjective cognitive decline; the surface under the cumulative ranking p score was 0.888, followed by balance exercise (p = 0.859), aerobic exercise (p = 0.832), and cognitive interventions (p = 0.618). Music therapy, cognitive training, transcranial direct current stimulation, mindfulness therapy, and balance exercises might be the most effective intervention components for improving global cognitive function (iSMD, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.36 to 1.29), language (iSMD, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.38), ability to perform activities of daily living (iSMD, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.21 to 0.89), physical health (iSMD, 3.29; 95% CI, 2.57 to 4.00), and anxiety relief (iSMD, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.26 to 1.16), respectively. Conclusions: The form of physical activity performed appears to be more beneficial than cognitive interventions in reducing subjective memory complaints for adults with subjective cognitive decline, and this difference was reflected in resistance, aerobic, and balance exercises. Revealing the relationship between the mating system (i.e., the outcrossing/inbreeding degree) and the fitness of seeds in tree species under wild conditions is essential for understanding the ecological adaptability and evolutionary stability of the species. This study collected open-pollinated seeds from seven wild populations of Pinus yunnanensis var. tenuifolia that exhibited fragmentation in the Nanpan–Hongshui River basin, an ecologically fragile area in China. The seeds and sprouts (germinated seeds) from 20 families were genotyped (24 seeds and 24 sprouts per family) using twelve microsatellite loci to reveal the genetic diversity, mating status, and effect of inbreeding on the three seed quality indicators (thousand-seed weight, germination rate, and germination potential). The three seed quality indicators differed significantly between families (p < 0.001). Higher values of genetic diversity (except the observed heterozygosity) were observed in the sprout group than those in the seed group. Families from different populations showed a notable genetic differentiation (Φst = 0.12), and a large part of families from the common populations had a high degree of coancestry, which signified that the current habitat fragmentation is limiting gene flow between populations. High levels of outcrossing rates (tm) were observed in both the seed group (tm = 0.974) and the sprout group (tm = 0.978), indicating that a low proportion of seeds were self-fertilized. Although there was a slightly higher single outcrossing rate (ts = 0.888) and a lower proportion of biparental inbreeding (tm − ts = 0.077) in sprouts compared to the seeds (ts = 0.871, tm − ts = 0.091), indicating that a part of inbred seeds were purged during the germination stage, curve fitting between the outcrossing rate and seed quality indicators showed that a certain degree of biparental inbreeding (ts between 0.89 and 0.91 and tm − ts between 0.09 and 0.11) did have a positive effect on seed germination ability. This highlights that excessive inbreeding or outbreeding seems to be unfavorable to seed viability. The peculiar relationship between seed viability and the mating system in P. yunnanensis var. tenuifolia was likely an evolutionary consequence of a trade-off between the nature of mixed mating and its specific ecological niche. In the context of China's freshwater crisis high-resolution data are critical for sustainable water management and economic growth. Yet there is a dearth of data on water withdrawal and scarcity regardless of whether total or subsector amount, for prefectural cities. In administrative and territorial scope, we accounted for water withdrawal of all 63 economic-socio-environmental sectors for all 343 prefectural cities in China, based on a general framework and 2015 data. Spatial and economic-sector resolution is improved compared with previous studies by partitioning general sectors into industrial and agricultural sub-sectors. Construction of these datasets was based on selection of 16 driving forces. We connected a size indicator with corresponding water-withdrawal efficiency. We further accounted for total blue-water withdrawal and quantitative water scarcity status. Then we compared different scopes and methods of official accounts and statistics from various water datasets. These disaggregated and complete data could be used in input-output models for municipal design and governmental planning to help gain in-depth insights into subsector water-saving priorities from local economic activities. Taking the L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) model as its theoretical basis, this study aimed to extend knowledge of the learning motivation of Korean language learners. A survey questionnaire was administered to 967 Korean language learners at 28 universities in China to investigate their motivation for learning the Korean language and the relationship between their learning motivation and their learning engagement. The results showed high levels of the ideal L2 self and the L2 learning experience and low levels of the ought-to L2 self. Additionally, the L2MSS had a high explanatory power for engagement. The ideal L2 self and the L2 learning experience were positively associated with the learning engagement of the participating Korean language learners. Background: The increasing prevalence of multimorbidity has created a serious global public health problem in aging populations. Certain multimorbidity patterns across different age ranges and their association with health status remain unclear. The main aim of this study is to identify multimorbidity patterns discrepancies and associated health status between younger-old and oldest-old. Methods: The Ethics Committee of Nanjing Medical University approved the study protocol (No.2019–473). Convenience sampling method was used to recruit older adults aged ≥ 60 years with multimorbidity from July to December 2021 from 38 Landsea long-term care facilities in China. The multimorbidity patterns were analyzed using network analysis and two-step cluster analysis. One-Way ANOVA was utilized to explore their association with health status including body function, activity of daily living, and social participation. A Sankey diagram visualized the flow of health status within different multimorbidity patterns. This study is reported following the STROBE guidelines. Results: A total of 214 younger-old (60–84 years) and 173 oldest-old (≥ 85 years) were included. Leading coexisting diseases were cardiovascular disease (CD), metabolic and endocrine disease (MED), neurological disease (ND), and orthopedic disease (OD). Cluster 1 (53, 24.8%) of CD-ND (50, 94.3%; 31, 58.8%), cluster 2 (39, 18.2%) of MED-ND-CD (39, 100%; 39, 100%; 37, 94.9%), cluster 3 (37, 17.3%) of OD-CD-MED-ND (37, 100%; 33, 89.2%; 27, 73.0%; 16, 43.2%), and cluster 4 (34, 15.9%) of CD-MED (34, 100%; 34, 100%) were identified in the younger-old. In the oldest-old, the primary multimorbidity patterns were: cluster 1 (33, 19.1%) of CD-respiratory disease-digestive disease-urogenital disease (CD-RD-DSD-UD) (32, 97.0%; 9, 27.3%; 8, 24.2%; 7, 21.2%), cluster 2 (42, 24.3%) of ND-CD-MED (42, 100%; 35, 83.3%; 14, 33.3%), cluster 3 (28, 16.2%) of OD-CD-MED (28, 100%; 25, 89.3%; 18, 64.3%), and cluster 4 (35, 20.2%) of CD-MED (35, 100%; 35, 100%). Younger-old with CD-ND or MED-ND-CD, and oldest-old with ND-CD-MED have worse health status compared with other multimorbidity patterns (e.g., CD-MED and OD-CD-MED). Conclusion: Discrepancies in common patterns of multimorbidity across age groups suggest that caregivers in long-term care facilities should consider changes in multimorbidity patterns with ageing when developing prevention plans for individualized management. Neurological disease concurrent with other diseases was the major determinant of health status, especially for the oldest-old. Interventions targeting multimorbidity need to be focused, yet generic. It is essential to assess complex needs and health outcomes that arise from different multimorbidity patterns and manage them through an interdisciplinary approach and consider their priorities to gain high-quality primary care for older adults living in long-term care facilities. Simple Summary: A previous study found that an indigenous endoparasitic wasp Cotesia ruficrus, has a good control effect on the invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda. Understanding the molecular mechanism of host recognition of C. ruficrus would help improve its biological control effect. Chemoreceptor proteins (CSPs) play a crucial role in insect olfactory perception. The CrufCSP1 protein was obtained via prokaryotic expression, and its binding properties were evaluated using fluorescence binding assays. Molecular docking was used to verify the function of CrufCSP1. The findings revealed that CrufCSP1 has the ability to bind with seven host-related compounds. This information serves as a crucial reference for developing natural enemy attractants for pest control. Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are a class of soluble proteins that facilitate the recognition of chemical signals in insects. While CSP genes have been identified in many insect species, studies investigating their function remain limited. Cotesia ruficrus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) holds promise as an indigenous biological control agent for managing the invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in China. This study aimed to shed light on the gene expression, ligand binding, and molecular docking of CrufCSP1 in C. ruficrus. A RT-qPCR analysis revealed that the expression of CrufCSP1 was higher in the wings, with male adults exhibiting significantly higher relative expression levels than other developmental stages. A fluorescence competitive binding analysis further demonstrated that CrufCSP1 has a high binding ability with several host-related volatiles, with trans-2-hexenal, octanal, and benzaldehyde showing the strongest affinity to CrufCSP1. A molecular docking analysis indicated that specific amino acid residues (Phe24, Asp25, Thr53, and Lys81) of CrufCSP1 can bind to these specific ligands. Together, these findings suggest that CrufCSP1 may play a crucial role in the process of C. ruficrus locating hosts. Background: Accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging due to its diverse manifestations. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can improve diagnostic precision, but their generalizability across medical centers in China is underexplored. Objective: To assess the accuracy of an ML algorithm for PD diagnosis, trained and tested on data from different medical centers in China. Methods: A total of 1656 participants were included, with 1028 from Beijing (training set) and 628 from Fuzhou (external validation set). Models were trained using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator–logistic regression (LASSO-LR), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), eXtreme gradient boosting (XGboost), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) techniques. Hyperparameters were optimized using five-fold cross-validation and grid search techniques. Model performance was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy, sensitivity (recall), specificity, precision, and F1 score. Variable importance was assessed for all models. Results: SVM demonstrated the best differentiation between healthy controls (HCs) and PD patients (AUC: 0.928, 95% CI: 0.908–0.947; accuracy: 0.844, 95% CI: 0.814–0.871; sensitivity: 0.826, 95% CI: 0.786–0.866; specificity: 0.861, 95% CI: 0.820–0.898; precision: 0.849, 95% CI: 0.807–0.891; F1 score: 0.837, 95% CI: 0.803–0.868) in the validation set. Constipation, olfactory decline, and daytime somnolence significantly influenced predictability. Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) remains a common and challenging clinical entity, and its economic burden has not been well described in China thus far. A total of 101 CRSwNP patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were included to investigate direct costs in the first year post-surgery. Costs for outpatient visits, medication use, and examination costs were obtained from the Hospital Information System, and differences were compared between subgroups. Multiple linear regression analysis was adopted to investigate the main influencing factors on annual total direct costs for CRSwNP patients. Ninety-two subjects completed the study. The individual mean total direct cost for a CRSwNP patient 1 year post-surgery was $742.4. The largest contributors were pharmacy costs ($580.2), followed by examination costs ($108.1) and outpatient visits ($54.1). Total direct costs were higher in subgroups of patients with uncontrolled clinical status, asthma comorbidity, and eosinophilic CRSwNP compared to their counterparts. The main influencing factors were clinical control status (P = 0.016) and asthma comorbidity (P = 0.035). The individual mean total direct cost of CRSwNP in 1-year post-surgery was $742.4. Objective: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer and is second leading cause of death from malignancy among women worldwide. In addition to tumor factors, the host characteristics of tumors have been paid more and more attention by the medical community. This study aimed to develop a breast cancer prediction model for the Chinese population using clinical and biochemical characteristics. Methods: This is a retrospective study. From 2012 to 2021, we selected 19,751 patients with breast diseases from the Guangdong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which included 5660 patients with breast cancer and 14,091 patients with benign breast diseases—75% of patients were randomly assigned to the training group and 25% to the test group using a total of 34 clinical and biochemical characteristics. Significant clinical signs were investigated, and logistic regression with recursive feature elimination (RFE) model was used to develop a prediction model for distinguishing benign from malignant breast diseases. The prediction model's accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were calculated. Results: Clinical statistics demonstrated that the prediction model comprised 19 clinical characteristics had statistical separability in both the training group and the test group, as well as good sensitivity and prediction. Conclusions: This model based on biochemical parameters demonstrates a significant predictive effect for breast cancer and may be useful as a reference for invasive tissue biopsy in patients undergoing BI-RADS 3 and 4A breast imaging. Background: School factors play important roles in adolescent suicide. However, little is known about how school climate is associated with adolescent suicide. This study examined the relationship between perceived school climate and adolescent suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and whether these relations were explained by adolescent sleep quality. Methods: A total of 1529 Chinese adolescents (mean age = 14.74 years; 52% boys) participated in the study. They provided self-report data on control variables, perceived school climate, sleep quality, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Results: After controlling for sex, age, family structure, socioeconomic status, and parent-adolescent attachment, we found that perceived school climate negatively predicted adolescent suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR] = 0.66, p < 0.001) and suicide attempts (OR = 0.72, p < 0.001). Moreover, perceived school climate positively predicated adolescent sleep quality (ß = 0.13, p < 0.001), which in turn, negatively predicted adolescent suicidal ideation (OR = 0.75, p < 0.001) and suicide attempts (OR = 0.76, p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings, although cross-sectional, indicate that perceived school climate plays an important role in adolescent suicidality. Moreover, the relation between perceived school climate and adolescent suicidality was largely mediated by adolescent sleep quality.

Aim: Smoking is harmful to human health. However, the relationship between smoking and blood pressure (BP) has not been consistent. This study aimed to analyse nurses' smoking behaviours and their relationship with BP. Methods: This cross‐sectional study recruited 128 009 nurses in 11 cities in China. They were surveyed with questionnaires including BP measurements. The main contents of the questionnaire included smoking status and other factors that might be associated with hypertension. Multiple linear regression analyses and binary logistic regression analyses were used to analyse the data. Results: The results showed there was a significant difference in the smoking rate among nurses with different characteristics (P < 0.05). For both male and female nurses, smoking was associated with increased diastolic BP and mean arterial pressure, but only with increased systolic BP of male nurses. The prevalence of hypertension among male and female nurses was not related to smoking. Conclusion: Despite a relatively low overall smoking rate, rates among some groups are high. Different cities, hospitals, and departments can combine local data and conditions to formulate targeted tobacco control measures to improve nurses' physical and mental health. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic?: The number of tobacco‐related diseases has been steadily increasing worldwide over the past few decades.A decrease in the smoking rate of medical staff can lead to a decrease in the smoking rate of the general population.The association between smoking and blood pressure remains controversial, and further clarification is required. What this paper adds?: There was a significant difference between the smoking rates of nurses with different characteristics.The smoking rates were relatively high for nurses in emergency departments and operating rooms and those with >10 night shifts per month within the last 6 months.Among nurses, smoking is related to increase in diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure in both men and women but only to increased systolic blood pressure in men; however, there was no association with hypertension risk. The implications of this paper: This study can support nursing managers to take targeted interventions to target smoking populations to reduce their smoking rates.For nurses who smoke due to high pressure, it is suggested that the working hours and cycles should be adjusted appropriately, the proportion of nurses should be increased, and the work intensity should be reduced to alleviate the work pressure.Nurses with high blood pressure should especially be dissuaded from smoking. Holding large conferences and events usually encourages the corresponding government to upgrade the host city. For this process, incorporating additional costs to increase accessibility for the elderly is a feasible means for a city to develop in an age-friendly manner. Providing evidence-based reports to policy makers is conducive to implementing the policies of age-friendly cities. This study used the scenario method to simulate the effect of promoting the "age-friendly cities" strategy on residents' psychological capital and social engagement (SE). We found that promoting the construction of age-friendly cities can significantly improve residents' psychological capital and SE and that residents from all age groups can benefit. In a sample of 1252 Chinese adolescents (mean age = 15.00 years), this study examined the direct relations between gratitude and adolescents' suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. This study also examined indirect relations between gratitude and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts via two self-system beliefs--coping efficacy and self-esteem. Finally, this study examined the extent to which stressful life events moderated the direct and indirect relations between gratitude and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The odds of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts were lower among adolescents who scored higher on gratitude, after controlling for demographic variables. Self-esteem mediated the relations between gratitude and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, while the mediating role of coping efficacy was not significant. Moreover, stressful life events moderated the mediated path through self-esteem. This indirect effect was stronger for adolescents low on stressful life events than that for those high on stressful life events. With the increasingly serious problem of land desertification in Western China, it is urgent to plant trees and improve forest coverage. Therefore, according to the land characteristics of Southern Xinjiang, a ZS 70-2 high-efficiency tree planting machine for desertification soil was developed, and the key components such as frame, ditching device, and soil covering pressing device were designed, analyzed, and modeled. The static analysis of the plow in the ditching device was carried out by using ANSYS software to obtain its maximum stress and strain position. The obtained tree planting machine integrated trenching, seedling throwing, soil covering, and pressing, and had simple structure and reliable operation, and the operation production efficiency is ≥ 2.5 hm²/h. It can realize large-area continuous tree planting operation, and greatly improve the efficiency of tree planting operation while saving human and material resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, there has been widespread concern regarding the carbon footprint (CF) of food waste due to the key impact of CF on climate change, particularly as China's food waste is rising with its economic development. China has the largest scale of higher education in the world, and the amount of food waste in university canteens is considerable and cannot be ignored. This study attempts to assess the carbon footprint (CF) of food waste at Chinese universities for the first time based on a national survey. It is estimated that 1.55 million tons of food were wasted in Chinese university canteens in 2018, based on 9,192 samples covering 29 provinces in China. The associated CF was 2.51 Mt CO2eq. The top two food categories contributing to the total CF were meat and grains, accounting for 46.28% and 36.52%, respectively. Furthermore, the location of the university was significantly associated with the CF of plate waste. It also indicated that household income, meal satisfaction, sex, education, meal days, and food-saving campaigns were important factors influencing the CF of food waste. This study highlights areas that can help reduce the environmental impact of plate waste. It also provides targeted measures to reduce the associated CF of food waste in Chinese universities. Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by predominant impairment of upper and lower motor neurons. Over 50 TARDBP mutations have been reported in both familial (FALS) and sporadic ALS (SALS). Some mutations in TARDBP, e.g. A382T and G294V, have genetic founder effects in certain geographic regions. However, such prevalence and founder effect have not been reported in Chinese. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed in 16 Chinese FALS patients, followed by Sanger sequencing for the TARDBP p.Gly298Ser mutation (G298S) in 798 SALS patients and 1,325 controls. Haplotype analysis using microsatellites flanking TARDBP was conducted in the G298S-carrying patients and noncarriers. The geographic distribution and phenotypic correlation of the TARDBP mutations reported worldwide were reviewed. Results: WES detected the TARDBP G298S mutation in 8 FALS patients, and Sanger sequencing found additional 8 SALS cases, but no controls, carrying this mutation. All the 16 cases came from Southern China, and 7 of these patients shared the 117-286-257-145-246-270 allele for the D1S2736-D1S1151-D1S2667-D1S489-D1S434-D1S2697 markers, which was not found in the 92 non-carrier patients (0/92) (p < 0.0001) and 65 age-matched and neurologically normal individuals (0/65) (p < 0.0001). The A382T and G298S mutations were prevalent in Europeans and Eastern Asians, respectively. Additionally, carriers for the M337V mutation are dominated by bulbar onset with a long survival, whereas those for G298S are dominated by limb onset with a short survival. Conclusions: Some prevalent TARDBP mutations are distributed in a geographic pattern and related to clinical profiles. The compounds in volatile flavor substances in duck meats of three different body parts (breast, leg, and wing) were extracted by headspace solid‐phase micro‐extraction and determined by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry. A total of 16 main volatile compounds including 4 hydrocarbons, 4 alcohols, 2 acids, 3 aldehydes, and 3 others (N‐containing, S‐containing) were identified in raw duck meats from three different body parts. The hydrocarbon compounds account for more than 50% of all volatile substances in all three body parts. And the percentage of hydrocarbon compounds in raw duck breast meat reaches 82.76%. A total of 81 volatile compounds including 15 hydrocarbons, 10 alcohols, 7 acids, 12 aldehydes, 4 esters, 19 S‐containing and N‐containing compounds, and 14 others were isolated and identified in 1 hr‐marinated and cooked duck meats. A total of 101 kinds of volatile flavor compounds including 13 hydrocarbons, 14 alcohol, 7 acids, 8 aldehydes, 12 esters, 23 S‐containing and N‐containing compounds, and 24 others were detected in 3 hr‐marinated duck meats of the three body parts. It was proved in this study that under the same conditions, the volatile compounds in duck legs are more than those in duck breasts and wings, and the types of volatile flavor substances increase significantly in duck meats after cooked. Practical applications: Prepared and cooked duck meat, especially wings and legs are popular food in China. The results suggest that Pickling makes duck meat more flavory while proper pickling time is less than 3 hr. Duck wings are better for marinating and cooking compared with duck breasts and legs. The acceptance study of duck meat from different body parts and the analysis of volatile flavor compounds are beneficial for optimizing utilization of whole parts of duck meat. Tin and tungsten are important metals for the industrializing society. Deciphering the origin and evolution of hydrothermal fluids responsible for their formation is critical to underpin genetic models of ore formation. Traditional approaches obtain isotopic information mainly from bulk analysis of both ore and gangue minerals, or less frequently from in situ analysis of gangue minerals, which either bear inherited complexities and uncertainties or are indirect constraints. Hence, directly obtaining isotopic information from ore minerals such as cassiterite by in situ techniques is warranted. However, this has been hampered by challenges from both analytical and applicational aspects. In this study, we first demonstrate a lack of crystallographic orientation effects during cassiterite ion microprobe oxygen isotope analysis. Along with our newly developed matrix-matched reference material, the Yongde-Cst, which has a recommended δ18O value of 1.36 ± 0.16‰ (VSMOW) as defined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry, in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite now is possible. We further refine the oxygen isotope fractionation (1000 ln α) for quartz-cassiterite by first-principles calculations, which is given by the equation of 1.259 × 106/T2 + 8.15 × 103/T − 4.72 (T is temperature in Kelvin). The 1000 ln α for quartz-cassiterite has a sensitive response to temperature, and makes cassiterite-quartz an excellent mineral pair in oxygen isotope thermometry, as described by the equation of T (℃) = 2427 × (δ18Oqtz − δ18Ocst)−0.4326 − 492.4. Using the well-established 1000 ln α of quartz-water, 1000 ln α of cassiterite-water is derived as 2.941 × 106/T2 − 11.45 × 103/T + 4.72 (T in Kelvin), which shows a weak response to temperature. This makes cassiterite an ideal mineral from which to derive δ18O of fluids as robust temperature estimates are no longer a prerequisite. We have applied oxygen isotope analysis to cassiterite samples from six Sn(-W) deposits in China. The results show considerable variability in δ18O values both within a single deposit and among studied deposits. Combining the δ18O of cassiterite samples and the equilibrium oxygen isotope fractionation, we find that the δ18O values of ore-forming fluids show a strong magmatic affinity with variable but mostly no to low degree involvements (~0-10%) of meteoric water, hence our results invite a reassessment on the extent and role of meteoric water in Sn-W mineralization. This study demonstrates that in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite is a promising tool to refine sources of ore-forming fluids, and to decode hydrothermal dynamics controlling tin and tungsten mineralization. The Cryogenian Period (717–635 Ma) experienced two low‐latitude "snowball Earth" glaciations, the Sturtian and the Marinoan of contrasting 57 and <16 Myr durations, respectively. A lack of reliable age controls on extensional tectonics and associated magmatic rocks during the Marinoan has hampered an understanding of the deglaciation. Furthermore, although deglaciation is generally assumed to have occurred once ongoing magmatism accumulated enough atmospheric CO2, as suggested by cap carbonates, specific geologic evidence linking volcanic events with deglaciation are lacking. Here, we present high‐precision zircon geochronology with chemical abrasion‐isotope‐dilution isotope ratio mass spectrometry that indicates an extensive and thick sequence of rift‐related magmatic rocks in South Qinling, Central China, erupted 2–6 Myr before the termination of the Marinoan. Climate modeling proposes a scenario explaining why the Marinoan was the shorter snowball and how volcanism may have driven the deglaciation. Plain Language Summary: Volcanic CO2 and dust emissions have been regarded as the major driver for Marinoan deglaciation. Most of CO2 outgassing is associated with seafloor spreading and subduction (arc magmatism), which are ongoing processes on geological timescales. To drastically increase CO2 emissions, there must have been many active rift zones during Marinoan glaciation. We provide age constraints on a previously little‐known major Marinoan rift‐related volcanic suite in South Qinling, which reveals volcanic activity lasting 4 Myr and ending 2 Myr before the termination of the Marinoan snowball Earth. Utilizing in situ oxygen isotope analysis, we demonstrate the potential of cassiterite as a robust recorder of fluid source and evolution. Cassiterite is an ore mineral, and its mineral–water oxygen isotope fractionation factor is only weakly temperature-dependent. Unlike most explored gangue minerals such as quartz, cassiterite can provide a direct and robust archive of ore-forming fluids, e.g., fluid oxygen isotope composition (δ18O values). Core and rim domains of a representative cassiterite crystal from the Piaotang tin-tungsten (Sn-W) deposit, China, are characterized by contrasting δ18O values. Cassiterite δ18O values are –2.14 ± 0.41 ‰ for the core and 2.36 ± 0.36 ‰ for the rim, which equate to fluid δ18O values of ~ 4.1 ‰ (core) and ~ 8.6 ‰ (rim). Additionally, the cassiterite rim is enriched in niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) compared to the mineral core. The δ18O, and Nb and Ta data are interpreted to reflect core to rim crystallization from distinct pulses of magmatic-hydrothermal fluids that possessed a discrete oxygen isotopic, and Nb and Ta composition. Such a pulsed process could be a common feature for Sn-W deposits, and is critical to the formation of giant deposits with high metal grades. Involvement of meteoric water associated with the first mineralization stage reaches ~ 33%, but is limited (~ 7%) in the second (main) mineralization stage. Therefore, cooling induced by fluid mixing may not be necessary for tin deposition, and our new findings invite a reassessment of the role of meteoric water in other Sn-W deposits. Our petrologic modelling shows that fluids exsolved from a 10 – 15 km3 parental granitic magma can yield the Sn-W endowments recorded at Piaotang. Further, during magma fractionation, Sn and W are preferentially transferred into fluids compared to Nb and Ta. As a consequence, fluid chemistry is the primary factor controlling metal endowment and zoning in W-Sn deposits, as observed at Piaotang, and explains the predominant magmatic origin of Nb–Ta deposits. Paleo‐Pacific subduction generated a prolonged active continental margin along the coast of the South China Block (SCB). A Triassic magmatic gap was argued to have occurred and was ascribed to flat‐slab subduction of an oceanic plateau. We study for the first time a >330‐m‐long core of typical arc volcanics dated at ca. 218 Ma from the Meiji Atoll in the southern South China Sea (SCS). Paleomagnetism suggests 4.1°± 1.5° of post‐eruption southward drift. These observations clearly support the existence of a Triassic arc in the SCB and imply that part of the arc later split off and drifted southward during the opening of the SCS in the Oligocene. Our results better constrain the lateral extent of the proposed flat‐slab subduction along the margin of the SCB. Moreover, we provide direct evidence of how the breakaway of ribbon continents operated in active continental margins, a recurrent scenario that has been invoked for Phanerozoic tectonics and continental growth throughout Asia. Background: Though many randomized control trials had examined the effectiveness and safety of taking insulin therapy with or without metformin, there are limited real-world data, especially among Chinese type 2 diabetes patients initiating basal insulin (BI) with uncontrolled hyperglycemia by oral agents. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness and safety of BI therapy combined with or without metformin in a real-world national cohort study. Methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who initiated BI treatment due to uncontrolled hyperglycemia (HbA1c≥7 %) by oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) were recruited in Chinese real-world settings between 2011 and 2013. A total of 12,358 patients initiated BI without bolus insulin and completed a 6-month follow-up were selected as the study population and divided into BI with metformin or BI without metformin group based on whether metformin was simultaneously prescribed or not at baseline. Propensity score adjustment was used to balance baseline covariates between two groups. A sub-analysis was also conducted among 8,086 patients who kept baseline treatment regimen during the follow-up. Outcomes were HbA1c, hypoglycemia, weight gain and insulin dose in two groups. Results: 53.6 % (6,621 out of 12,358) patients initiated BI therapy concomitant with metformin. After propensity score adjustment, multivariate regression analysis controlled with number of OADs, total insulin dose, physical activity and diet consumption showed that BI with metformin group had a slightly higher control rate of HbA1c <7.0 % (39.9 % vs. 36.4 %, P = 0.0011) at 6-month follow-up, and lower dose increment from baseline to 6-month (0.0064 vs. 0.0068 U/day/kg, P = 0.0035). The sub-analysis with patients remained at same BI therapy further showed that BI with metformin group had higher HbA1c control rate (47.9 % vs. 41.9 %, P = 0.0001), less weight gain (-0.12 vs. 0.15 kg P = 0.0013), and lower dose increment during 6-month follow-up (0.0033 vs. 0.0037 U/day/kg, P = 0.0073) when compared with BI without metformin group. Conclusions: In alliance with current guidelines, the real-world findings also support the insulin initiation together with metformin. The Karst aquifers are usually characterized by high spatial heterogeneity in the humid tropics and subtropics, evidenced by specific landforms features (e.g., heavily fractured outcrops, sinkholes, etc.) and complex subterranean conduit networks. The marked high heterogeneity leads to the temporal–spatial variability of hydrological and hydro-chemical processes, making its environments extremely vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic hazards. The complicated temporal–spatial variability of hydrochemistry in karst systems depends on several underlying factors which influence the hydro-chemical processes. Investigating the factors of the karst water hydrochemistry variability is necessary to understand the hydro-chemical processes and mitigate natural and anthropogenic hazards for ensuring the sustainability of karst water resources. In this paper, an attempt is made to couple geostatistical and geochemical analysis to extract the underlying controlling factors and effective information about the geochemical evolution behave of karst water in Houzhai karst area, southwestern China. Factor analysis was performed to obtain significant statistical relationship of the hydrochemistry variation in the Houzhai karst basin. The ordinary kriging method was applied to the factor scores to investigate the contributions of factors on different regions. The results of the factor analysis indicated four principal factors which explained > 81.678% of the total sample variance: (1) the dilution effect by rainfall; (2) the dissolution effect dominated by calcite; (3) the human agricultural activities effect; (4) the migration of dissolved components under the control of alkaline environments in karst water. It revealed that the dilution effect was more significant (36.579%) than the dissolution effect (22.036%) and human agricultural activities effect (14.596%). These factors made more significant difference of contributions on the karst area in the dry periods than in the rainy periods. The dilution process by rainfall and the dissolution process of carbonate rock had a great influence on the upstream area whereas the human agricultural activities played important roles in the middle-stream area, especially in the dry periods. This integrated approach which combine factor analysis with kriging method is effective in the identification and interpretation of factors related to the variability of hydrochemistry, as well as the contributions of these factors on space and time. Objective: To evaluate the neglect of left-behind children (LBC) in China. Method: Participants: Children separated from one or both parents for at least 6 months. Intervention: Trauma of separation. Comparison: Non-left-behind children (NLBC). Outcomes: Neglect rates and severity. Only case–control studies were included. Results: Thirteen studies were included; there were 18,688 LBC in a large sample (N = 42,003) of children aged 0–18 years in China. The overall neglect rate was significantly higher in LBC compared to NLBC (odds ratio [ OR ] = 1.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.50, 1.67], p <.01) based on the Chinese Rural Child Neglected Evaluation Model (CRCNEM) and the Parents–Child Conflict Tactics Scales (OR = 1.44, 95% CI [1.35, 1.54], p <.01). The overall neglect severity in LBC was also significantly higher than NLBC (SMD = 0.31, 95% CI [0.28, 0.33], p <.01). The same trends were observed in sex subgroups. With regard to subtypes, LBC were significantly more likely to have emotional neglect (OR = 2.29, 95% CI [1.88, 2.78], p <.01), medical neglect (OR = 1.79, 95% CI [1.62, 1.98], p <.01), physical neglect (OR = 1.75, 95% CI [1.60, 1.91], p <.01), security neglect (OR = 1.52, 95% CI [1.32, 1.75], p <.01), educational neglect (OR = 1.50, 95% CI [1.31, 1.72], p <.01), and social neglect (OR = 1.33, 95% CI [1.18, 1.51], p <.01). Furthermore, LBC had significantly higher severity in medical neglect (SMD = 0.31, 95% CI [0.27, 0.35], p <.01), emotional neglect (SMD = 0.28, 95% CI [0.24, 0.32], p <.01), physical neglect (SMD = 0.24, 95% CI [0.18, 0.29], p <.01), security neglect (SMD = 0.26, 95% CI [0.23, 0.29], p <.01), educational neglect (SMD = 0.25, 95% CI [0.20, 0.31], p <.01), and social neglect (SMD = 0.25, 95% CI [0.10, 0.40], p <.01). Conclusion: The neglect rates and severity in LBC in China were both significantly higher than those in NLBC. There was a strong association between neglect and LBC. Background: Glycemic control remains suboptimal in developing countries due to critical system deficiencies. An innovative mobile health (mHealth)-enabled hierarchical diabetes management intervention was introduced and evaluated in China with the purpose of achieving better control of type 2 diabetes in primary care.Methods and Findings: A community-based cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among registered patients with type 2 diabetes in primary care from June 2017 to July 2019. A total of 19,601 participants were recruited from 864 communities (clusters) across 25 provinces in China, and 19,546 completed baseline assessment. Moreover, 576 communities (13,037 participants) were centrally randomized to the intervention and 288 communities (6,509 participants) to usual care. The intervention was centered on a tiered care team-delivered mHealth-mediated service package, initiated by monthly blood glucose monitoring at each structured clinic visit. Capacity building and quarterly performance review strategies upheld the quality of delivered primary care. The primary outcome was control of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; <7.0%), assessed at baseline and 12 months. The secondary outcomes include the individual/combined control rates of blood glucose, blood pressure (BP), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C); changes in levels of HbA1c, BP, LDL-C, fasting blood glucose (FBG), and body weight; and episodes of hypoglycemia. Data were analyzed using intention-to-treat (ITT) generalized estimating equation (GEE) models, accounting for clustering and baseline values of the analyzed outcomes. After 1-year follow-up, 17,554 participants (89.8%) completed the end-of-study (EOS) assessment, with 45.1% of them from economically developed areas, 49.9% from urban areas, 60.5 (standard deviation [SD] 8.4) years of age, 41.2% male, 6.0 years of median diabetes duration, HbA1c level of 7.87% (SD 1.92%), and 37.3% with HbA1c <7.0% at baseline. Compared with usual care, the intervention led to an absolute improvement in the HbA1c control rate of 7.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.0% to 10.0%) and a relative improvement of 18.6% (relative risk [RR] 1.186, 95% CI 1.105 to 1.267) and an absolute improvement in the composite ABC control (HbA1c <7.0%, BP <140/80 mm Hg, and LDL-C <2.6 mmol/L) rate of 1.9% (95% CI 0.5 to 3.5) and a relative improvement of 21.8% (RR 1.218, 95% CI 1.062 to 1.395). No difference was found on hypoglycemia episode and weight gain between groups. Study limitations include noncentralized laboratory tests except for HbA1c, and caution should be exercised when extrapolating the findings to patients not registered in primary care system.Conclusions: The mHealth-enabled hierarchical diabetes management intervention effectively improved diabetes control in primary care and has the potential to be transferred to other chronic conditions management in similar contexts.Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR) IOC-17011325. Do foreign banks enjoy a competitive edge in the Chinese banking market or are they disadvantaged vis-à-vis domestic banks? This is the question that the present paper seeks to answer. The issue is important since on the one hand, these banks face the challenges the liability of foreignness brings, but at the same time, they have bank-specific advantages. We examine this issue in light of the literature of the liability of foreignness. In our path-breaking study, we found that due to the cost of foreignness, foreign banks' performance was not as good as that of the local banks. Furthermore, despite the same amount of location- and bank-specific advantages, they performed badly as compared to their local counterparts. It was found that the cost of location-based disadvantages outweighed the cost of bank-specific disadvantages for foreign banks, and recent policy changes may help them overcome some of the cost of foreignness. Aim: The mechanisms underlying the maintenance of biodiversity remain to be elucidated. Taxonomic diversity alone remains an unresolved issue, especially in terms of the mechanisms of species co‐existence. We hypothesized that phylogenetic information could help to elucidate the mechanism of community assembly and the services and functions of ecosystems. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms driving floral diversity in subtropical forests and evaluate the relative effects of these mechanisms on diversity variation, by combining taxonomic and phylogenetic information. Location: We examined 35 1‐ha tree stem‐mapped plots across eight national nature reserves in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Taxon: Trees. Methods: We quantified the taxonomic and phylogenetic β‐diversity between each pair of plots using the (abundance‐based) Rao's quadratic entropy and the (incidence‐based) Sørensen dissimilarity indices. Using a null model approach, we compared the observed β‐diversity with the expected diversity at random and calculated the standard effect size of the observed β‐diversity deviation. Furthermore, we used distance‐based redundancy analysis (dbRDA) to partition the variations in taxonomic and phylogenetic observed β‐diversity and β‐deviation into four parts to assess the environmental and spatial effects. Results: The taxonomic β‐deviation was related to and higher than the phylogenetic β‐deviation (r =.74). This indicated that the species turnover between pairwise plots was mainly the turnover of closely related species. Higher taxonomic and phylogenetic β‐deviation were mainly concentrated in the pairwise karst and nonkarst forest plots, indicating that the species in karst forests and nonkarst forests were predominantly from distantly related clades. A large proportions of the variation in taxonomic and phylogenetic β‐deviation were explained by the joint effect of environmental and spatial variables, while the contribution of environmental variables was greater than that of spatial variables, probably owing to the influence of the sampling scale dependence, integrality of sampling size and species pool, and the unique climatic and geomorphic characteristics. Main conclusions: Our study highlights the importance of phylogeny in biodiversity research. The incorporation of taxonomic and phylogenetic information provides a perspective to explore potential underlying mechanisms that have shaped species assemblages and phylogenetic patterns in biodiversity hotspots. Young migrants have been the major migrant labor force in urban China. But they may be more vulnerable in quality of life and mental health than other groups, due to their personal characteristic and some social/community policies or management measures. It highlights the need to focus on psychological wellbeing and probe driving and reinforcing factors that influence their mental health. This study aimed to investigate the influence of subjective/objective status and possible pathways of young migrants' life satisfaction and psychological distress. Data on 9838 young migrants in the China Migrants Dynamic Survey were analyzed by LISREL 8.8. A total of 94.03% migrated for jobs or business. Subjective status, including subjective socioeconomic status, social adaptation, and psychological integration, had positive effects on life satisfaction, whereas social adaptation and psychological integration negatively affected psychological distress. Objective status, including objective socioeconomic status and health insurance, had adverse effects on life satisfaction, whereas they positively affected psychological distress. Social participation and city belonging had only significant positive mediating roles on life satisfaction. It is essential to increase social adaptation and decrease integration stress according to younger internal migrants' practical needs. Many countries have been implementing various control measures with different strictness levels to prevent the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from spreading. With the great reduction in human mobility and daily activities, considerable impacts have been imposed on the global air transportation industry. This study applies a hybrid SARIMA-based intervention model to measure the differences in the impacts of different control measures implemented in China, the U.S. and Singapore on air passenger and air freight traffic. To explore the effect of time span for the measures to be in force, two scenarios are invented, namely a long-term intervention and a short-term intervention, and predictions are made till the end of 2020 for all three countries under both scenarios. As a result, predictive patterns of the selected metrics for the three countries are rather different. China is predicted to have the mildest economic impact on the air transportation industry in this year in terms of air passenger revenue and air cargo traffic, provided that the control measures were prompt and effective. The U.S. would suffer from a far-reaching impact on the industry if the same control measures are maintained. More uncertainties are found for Singapore, as it is strongly associated with international travel demands. Suggestions are made for the three countries and the rest of the world on how to seek a balance between the strictness of control measures and the potential long-term industrial losses. Life history of Caenis lubrica Tong and Dudgeon, 2002 (Ephemeroptera: Caenidae) was studied for the first time. We investigated it in Pangxie Stream, which feeds into the Xiangxi River Bay, Three Gorges Reservoir in subtropical Central China. Monthly samples of larvae were taken from January to December, 2017. Caenis lubrica was determined to exhibit trivoltinism in this system, having an overwintering generation and two summer generations. The cohort production interval (CPI) of the overwintering generation was six months, from November to April, and the CPIs of the two summer generations were one month each, from June to July and from July to August. The Accumulated Degree Days of C. lubrica for larval development of the overwintering generation and the two summer generations were estimated to be 1829.24 °C, 904.84 °C, and 859.83 °C, respectively. While the fund performance management literature has clearly documented that the fund size, fund family size, and net cash flow are important antecedents of equity fund performance, prior empirical studies have revealed mixed results that have not been adequately explained. Through the lens of the contingency perspective, we developed a conceptual model that examines how the expense ratio and management compensation as contextual factors interact with the fund size, fund family size, and net cash flow to affect equity fund performance. The empirical analyses were based on panel data including 690 equity funds in China over a 7-year period from 2009 to 2015. The results show that the expense ratio and management compensation moderate the effects of the fund family size and net cash flow on fund performance, and management compensation also moderates the relationship between the fund size and fund performance. In the context of the freshwater crisis, accounting for water withdrawal could help planners better regulate water use in different sectors to combat water scarcity. However, the water withdrawal statistics in China are patchy, and the water data across all sectors at the city level appear to be relatively insufficient. Hence, we develop a general framework to, for the first time, estimate the water withdrawal of 58 economic–social–environmental sectors in cities in China. This methodology was applied because only inconsistent water statistics collected from different data sources at the city level are available. We applied it to 18 representative Chinese cities. Different from conventional perceptions that agriculture is usually the largest water user, industrial and household water withdrawal may also occupy the largest percentages in the water‐use structure of some cities. The discrepancy among annual household water use per capita in the urban areas of different cities is relatively small (as is the case for rural areas), but that between urban and rural areas is large. As a result, increased attention should be paid to controlling industrial and urban household water use in particular cities. China should specifically prepare annual water accounts at the city level and establish a timetable to tackle water scarcity, which is a basic step toward efficient and sustainable water crisis mitigation. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of the excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and the possible association of ERCC1 polymorphisms with susceptibility and response to chemotherapy of OSCC in a Chinese Han population. The expression of ERCC1 was determined by real-time PCR in eight patients. Four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs11615, rs3212948, rs3212961, and rs735482 of ERCC1 were genotyped in 113 OSCC patients and 184 healthy controls using a PCR restriction matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) assay. We found that a higher gene expression of ERCC1 was observed in tumor tissue as compared to pericarcinomatous tissue in OSCC patients. All genotypic and allelic frequencies of the tested ERCC1 polymorphisms were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The genotypic and allelic frequencies of rs11615, rs3212948, rs3212961, and rs735482 of ERCC1 were not different between OSCC patients and controls. No correlation was observed between ERCC1 polymorphisms and the response to chemotherapy. Our results show that ERCC1 is increased in the tumor tissue of OSCC patients. The investigated ERCC1 gene polymorphisms (rs11615, rs3212948, rs3212961, and rs735482) are not associated with the susceptibility and response to chemotherapy of OSCC in our investigated Chinese Han population. Background: The benefit of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme system metabolized medications, especially clopidogrel, was reported more pronounced in smoking than nonsmoking patients, but limited evidence was available from Asian patients. We analyzed data from a large registry-based study of Chinese patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to understand if the above finding could be reproduced.Methods: A total of 14 658 patients with AMI were prospectively recruited from 101 hospitals across China. Generalized estimating equation was applied to assess the association between CYP450 enzyme system metabolized medications (clopidogrel, statins, calcium channel blockers) and in-hospital death in smoking and nonsmoking patients, separately, adjusting for hospital clustering effects and propensity score of using the medication in question.Results: There were 86%, 93%, and 10% of study patients who received clopidogrel, statins, and calcium channel blockers during the hospitalization. Compared with patients not receiving clopidogrel, patients receiving the drug had a significantly lower risk of in-hospital death (adjusted relative risk [RR] = 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.40-0.91) in current smokers but an insignificant lower risk (adjusted RR = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.71-1.01) in nonsmokers, and the P for interaction was <.01. The corresponding adjusted RR was 0.45 (95% CI: 0.24-0.86) in current smokers and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.68-1.29) in nonsmokers (P for interaction <.01) for statins use and 1.00 (95% CI: 0.53-1.89) in current smokers and 0.66 (95% CI: 0.48-0.90) in nonsmokers (P for interaction = .23) for calcium channel blockers use.Conclusions: Our study in a large cohort of Chinese patients with AMI found that the treatment effect in reducing risk of in-hospital death was significantly larger in smokers than in nonsmokers as for clopidogrel and statins but not for calcium channel blockers. Background: As the country with the largest aging population, China faces an enormous challenge with its elderly support and care. One of the proposed solutions is the development of volunteerism for elderly care. The Senior Care Volunteers Training Program (SCVTP) was initiated by the Red Cross Society of China with the purpose of training volunteers to care for community seniors. As one of the four pilot provinces, Jiangsu Province launched the program since 2017. Aims: The present study was conducted to investigate the dropout rate of trained volunteer group leaders, the characteristics of the retained trained volunteer group leaders and the activities that their groups conducted. Additionally, the exploration of the factors influencing the SCVTP's performance was listed as another aim. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed. The study used purposive sampling to select participants who meet the criteria from all the trained volunteer group leaders (n = 623). Demographic questionnaire, volunteer role identity (VRI) scale, attitude toward helping others (AHO) scale, team climate and atmosphere (TCA) scale, and volunteer program performance evaluation (VPPE) questionnaire were used to collect the data online. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the dropout rate and general characteristics of the retained volunteers and the activities. A multiple linear regression equation was developed to study the factors that influence program performance. Results: In total, 307 questionnaires were valid in the study. About 67.9%, 53.7%, and 30.0% of the trained volunteer group leaders dropped out of the program in the year of 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively. The retained trained volunteer group leaders were more likely to be females (84.7%), those in excellent health (75.2%) and with a bachelor's degree or above (87.6%). Less attention has been paid to frailty care (n = 76) than other volunteer caring activities (e.g., safe care: n = 277, diet care: n = 250, drug management care: n = 226). VRI (β = 0.118, p = 0.017), AHO (β = 0.134, p = 0.021), TCA (β = 0.459, p<0.001), and financial sustainability (β = 0.179, p<0.001) affected the SCVTP's performance significantly (adjusted R2 = 0.356). Conclusion: High rate of trained volunteer group leaders' dropout should be brought to the policymaker's attention. The characteristics of the retained trained volunteer group leaders provide a useful reference for the recruitment of trainees in the future. Frailty care may need more training by the volunteer service provider. In order to enhance program performance, a better team climate and atmosphere, financial sustainability, and volunteers with appropriate attitude and role identity are also necessary for the volunteer program. Aim: To investigate the relationship between hemoglobin levels and the progression of IgA nephropathy (IgAN).Methods: In a two-center cohort of 1,828 cases with biopsy-proven IgAN, we examined the association of hemoglobin levels with the primary outcome of a composite of all-cause mortality or kidney failure defined as a 40% decline in eGFR, or ESKD (defined as eGFR <15 mL/min/1.73 m2 or need for kidney replacement therapy including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation), or the outcome of kidney failure, assessed using Cox and logistic regression models, respectively, with adjustment for confounders.Results: At baseline, mean age, eGFR, and hemoglobin levels were 33.75 ± 11.03 years, 99.70 ± 30.40 mL/min/1.73 m2, and 123.47 ± 18.36 g/L, respectively. During a median of approximately 7-year follow-up, 183 cases reached the composite outcome. After adjustment for demographic and IgAN-specific covariates and treatments, a lower quartile of hemoglobin was nonlinearly associated with an increased risk of the primary outcome or kidney failure in the Cox proportional hazards models (primary outcome: HR for quartile 3 vs. 4, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.83-2.25; HR for quartile 2 vs. 4, 1.18; 95% CI, 0.68-2.07; HR for quartile 1 vs. 4, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.15-3.17; kidney failure: HR for quartile 3 vs. 4, 1.39; 95% CI, 0.84-2.31; HR for quartile 2 vs. 4, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.68-2.11; HR for quartile 1 vs. 4, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.09-3.07) in the fully adjusted model. Then, hemoglobin levels were transformed to a binary variable for fitting the model according to the criteria for anemia of 110 g/L in the women and 120 g/L in men in China. The participants in the anemia group had an increased risk of developing outcomes compared with the nonanemia group in both genders (primary outcome: male: HR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.01-2.68; female: HR, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.02-2.76; kidney failure: male: HR, 1.60; 95% CI, 0.97-2.64; female: HR, 1.58; 95% CI, 0.95-2.61) in the fully adjusted model.Conclusions: A low level of hemoglobin was nonlinearly associated with IgAN progression. Background: To date, the missed diagnosis rate of pulmonary hypertension (PH) was high, and there has been limited development of a rapid, simple, and effective way to screen the disease. The purpose of this study is to develop a deep learning approach to achieve rapid detection of possible abnormalities in chest radiographs suggesting PH for screening patients suspected of PH. Methods: We retrospectively collected frontal chest radiographs and the pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) value measured by Doppler transthoracic echocardiography from 762 patients (357 healthy controls and 405 with PH) from three institutes in China from January 2013 to May 2019. The wohle sample comprised 762 images (641 for training, 80 for internal test, and 41 for external test). We firstly performed a 8-fold cross-validation on the 641 images selected for training (561 for pre-training, 80 for validation), then decided to tune learning rate to 0.0008 according to the best score on validation data. Finally, we used all the pre-training and validation data (561+80 = 641) to train our models (Resnet50, Xception, and Inception V3), evaluated them on internal and external test dataset to classify the images as having manifestations of PH or healthy according to the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC/ROC). After that, the three deep learning models were further used for prediction of PASP using regression algorithm. Moreover, we invited an experienced chest radiologist to classify the images in the test dataset as having PH or not, and compared the prediction accuracy performed by deep learing models with that of manual classification. Results: The AUC performed by the best model (Inception V3) achieved 0.970 in the internal test, and slightly declined in the external test (0.967) when using deep learning algorithms to classify PH from normal based on chest X-rays. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the best model for prediction of PASP value was smaller in the internal test (7.45) compared to 9.95 in the external test. Manual classification of PH based on chest X-rays showed much lower AUCs compared to that performed by deep learning models both in the internal and external test. Conclusions: The present study used deep learning algorithms to classify abnormalities suggesting PH in chest radiographs with high accuracy and good generalizability. Water quality, size, connectivity and other physical properties of hydrological systems might have different functions in the formation and maintenance of biodiversity, but this remains mostly unclear due to the lack of undisturbed sites for experimental modelling. Alpine freshwater habitats such as micro-waterbodies (MWB) represent a kind of natural system suitable for biodiversity research. In order to assess potential linkages between environmental factors, connectivity of MWBs and aquatic species richness, we conducted a pilot study in two separated MWB systems located in Gaoligong Mountain, northwest Yunnan province, China. A total of 27 MWBs have been analyzed, including 22 connected and 5 isolated bodies. 13 conventional environmental factors were tested while all kinds of aquatic macro-organisms were collected and classified. Results showed a high environmental heterogeneity among MWBs and significant differences between the two systems but only a few environmental variables such as the depth of soil bottom, total Nitrogen and altitude were related to species richness and the formation of the community structure. As a benefit from the high environmental heterogeneity, the cascaded MWB systems provided divergent habitats able to support species richness at a higher level than the same number of randomly selected MWBs. This finding supports the idea that habitat connectivity matters also in extremely small aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, although still a preliminary result, a polarization effect within connected chains where edge MWBs host higher taxa and endemic taxa richness as well as larger populations, was detectable. This study gives interesting insights on the spatial processes driving community structure and a new prospective for biodiversity conservation. We investigated the life history of Drunella submontana Brodsky, 1930 using the size-frequency method at four sites at different altitudes (from 590 m to 2180 m) in Shennongjia National Park, Central China. Monthly samples of larvae were taken over a two-year period (May 2015–April 2017). Drunella submontana was considered exhibit three overlapping life cycle types: univoltinism with a short egg stage, univoltinism with a long egg stage and semivoltinism. Under diverse climatic habitats in the river ecosystem in Shennongjia National Park, some physicochemical parameters (such as temperature, conductivity, salinity, total dissolved solids and pH) of water showed significantly differences, and the developmental time of D. submontana prolongated from low to high altitudes. Ephemera wuchowensis Hsu, 1937 is a commonly encountered and widely distributed burrowing mayfly species in China, but its biological traits are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the life history of E. wuchowensis using the size-frequency method at three sites along a creek in Central China. Monthly samples of larvae were taken from January to December 2017. The life history of E. wuchowensis was found to be univoltine in this northern subtropical region, and there were no significant differences among the sites based on the size-frequency histograms. Unlike the emergence of congeneric species, which inhabit southern subtropical monsoon streams and are showed to be highly synchronised with a relatively short flight period, the adults of E. wuchowensis has a long emergence period from April to September with two distinct peaks of emergence: the first from April to June, and the second from August to September. When assessing urban eco-environmental sensitive areas (Urban Eco-ESAs) by multi-criteria evaluation method, the widely used weighted linear combination method may inevitably lead to some factors of high sensitive value being neutralized by other factors of low sensitive value, resulting in the neglect of some eco-sensitive areas as a consequence, while on the other hand, Boolean OR combination method, which give a result of high sensitive value as long as any factor has the value of high sensitivity and thus ignore the mutual compensation mechanism among ecological factors, can lead to excessively wide ranges of the eco-sensitive areas. To overcome the defects of these two methods, the authors propose an Urban Eco-ESAs synthesized assessment method giving finely controlled priority to bottleneck factors, and relative model based on selective local encouraging variable weights combination. The method is able to increase the weights of some eco-bottleneck factors on the basis of a weight-changing function in synthesizing multiple factor assessments as long as their assessment values break the bottleneck threshold values, which can guarantee the eco-sensitive areas identified by bottleneck factors being embodied in the final result, while also retain the compensation effect of multiple ecological factors, which makes the results of the assessment more reasonable. In order to deliver this empirical research, Taogang Town in China, which is adjacent to Net lake wetland nature reserve area, has been used as an example to confirm the validity of the method and the model. This study empirically examines how the bank specific factors, macro-economic, and institutional variables impact interest margins in China's banking sector. A panel data analysis of bank data for the period 1988-2015 was carried out. We found a significant association between credit quality, risk aversion, liquidity risk, and the proportion of corporate and industrial loans and the adjusted interest spread (AIS). GDP growth rate, inflation, and the proportion of national savings to the GDP were found to have significant association with the AIS. Furthermore, institutional variables were found to have a significant moderating effect on the AIS. Background: Phlegm and blood stasis syndrome (PBSS) is one of the main syndromes in coronary heart disease (CHD). Syndromes of Chinese medicine (CM) are lack of quantitative and easy-implementation diagnosis standards. To quantify and standardize the diagnosis of PBSS, scales are usually applied. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of CM diagnosis scale of PBSS in CHD. Methods: Six hundred patients with stable angina pectoris of CHD, 300 in case group and 300 in control group, will be recruited from 5 hospitals across China. Diagnosis from 2 experts will be considered as the "gold standard". The study design consists of 2 phases: pilot test is used to evaluate the reliability and validity, and diagnostic test is used to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the scale, including sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio and area under the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve. Discussion: This study will evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of CM diagnosis scale of PBSS in CHD. Abstract Objective: Left-behind children have a high incidence of behavioral problems in some Eastern countries, especially China. We sought to assess the combined effects of physical neglect, a major embodiment of the left-behind phenomenon, and the trauma of being left behind on subsequent behavioral problems. Method: 776 children (including 600 left-behind children) aged 12–16 years were chosen by cluster sampling in rural China. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form and the Conners Teacher Rating Scale were used to evaluate physical neglect and behavioral problems. Results: Left-behind children experienced more physical neglect (mean difference = 0.63; 95%CI 0.15–1.10; P = 0.01) and were more inattentive (mean difference=0.11; 95%CI 0.03–0.19; P = 0.009) than non-left-behind children. Physically neglected left-behind children had higher scores for conduct problems, inattention, and hyperactivity index than non-left-behind without physical neglect group (P < 0.05 for each). Among left-behind children, physical neglect group had significantly more conduct problems than those of controls (mean difference=0.14; 95%CI 0.05–0.23; P = 0.008). Physically neglected non-left-behind children had higher scores for conduct problems than those of left-behind children without physical neglect (mean difference=0.31; 95%CI 0.13–0.47; P = 0.003). Among physically neglected children, left-behind children had significantly higher scores for inattention than those of non-left-behind children (mean difference=0.13; 95%CI 0.04–0.22; P = 0.037). Conclusion: Left-behind children have more behavioral problems than non-left-behind children. Physical neglect may result in more severe conduct problems than those associated with staying behind, and staying behind may lead to inattention.
