Zhayu is a type of traditional fermented fish product in China that is made through the fermentation of salted fish with a mixture of cereals and spices. Inoculation fermentation was performed using Pediococcus pentosaceus P1, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum L1, and a mixture of two strains, which were isolated from cured fish in Hunan Province. Compared with the natural fermentation, inoculation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) accelerated the degradation of myosin and actin in Zhayu, increased the trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble peptide content by about 1.3-fold, reduced the colony counts of Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus aureus by about 40%, and inhibited their lipid oxidation. In the texture profile analysis performed, higher levels of hardness and chewiness were observed in the inoculation groups. In this study, the bacterial community and volatile flavor compounds were detected through 16S high-throughput sequencing and headspace solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Inoculation with L. plantarum L1 reduced around 75% abundance of Klebsiella compared with the natural fermentation group, which was positively correlated with 2,3-Butanediol, resulting in a less pungent alcohol odor in Zhayu products. The abundances of 2-pentylfuran and 2-butyl-3-methylpyrazine were increased over threefold in the L1 group, which may give Zhayu its unique flavor and aroma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors (PHNETs) are extremely rare NETs originating from the liver. These tumors are associated with heterogeneous prognosis, and few treatment targets for PHNETs have been identified. Because the major genetic alterations in PHNET are still largely unknown, we performed whole‐exome sequencing of 22 paired tissues from PHNET patients and identified 22 recurring mutations of somatic genes involved in the following activities: epigenetic modification (BPTF, MECP2 and WDR5), cell cycle (TP53, ATM, MED12, DIDO1 and ATAD5) and neural development (UBR4, MEN1, GLUL and GIGYF2). Here, we show that TP53 and the SET domain containing the 1B gene (SETD1B) are the most frequently mutated genes in this set of samples (3/22 subjects, 13.6%). A biological analysis suggests that one of the three SETD1B mutants, A1054del, promotes cell proliferation, migration and invasion compared to wild‐type SETD1B. Our work unveils that SETD1B A1054del mutant is functional in PHNET and implicates genes including TP53 in the disease. Our findings thus characterize the mutational landscapes of PHNET and implicate novel gene mutations linked to PHNET pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets. What's new? Here the authors sequenced tumors from 22 patients in China and provide a first look at the mutational landscape of primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors. ABSTRACT This study examines Chinese consumers' preferences for organic and non-GM (genetically modified) attributes of soybeans used in soymilk. An enumerated consumer survey was conducted in three types of grocery outlets in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. We found that respondents were willing to pay a premium for organic and non-GM attributes as well as for information on where soybeans were produced. The organic attribute certified by U.S. agencies was valued more than that certified by Chinese agencies, but the converse was true for the non-GM attribute. Over the past decade, immunological research in China has developed rapidly. Currently, little is known about China's contribution to the immunology field. The present study was designed to study research output in immunology journals during 1999–2008 in the three different regions of China—Mainland China (ML), Hong Kong (HK) and Taiwan (TW). We also examined the research output from other top-ranking countries—the United States (USA), Japan, Germany, United Kingdom (UK) and France during 1999–2008. Articles published in 114 journals related to immunology were retrieved from the PubMed database. The number and percentage of articles in the world's output showed significantly positive trends during 1999–2008 in ML and TW, but the trend for HK was not significant. China contributed 2.7% of the total 114 journals, 0.3% of the top 10% journals with the impact factor (IF) scores. The USA contributed 32.1% of the total world's output, 47.5% of the top 10% journals with the IF scores and ranked first. Our analysis describes the research output from the three regions of China and the positive trend in China during 1999–2008. Also, by contrast with other top-ranking countries, our results imply China falls behind the ranks in conducting immunology research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the composition of China's international trade from 1980 to 1997, with a focus on agriculture and a view towards understanding agriculture's changing trade structure relative to other sectors. We analyse the time series behaviour of individually traded goods at the Standard Industrial Trade Classification three-digit level, categorised into three groups: agricultural commodities, 'other' primary commodities and manufactures. We find that China's agricultural trade has expanded along comparative advantage lines in only a very modest way, suggesting that World Trade Organization membership will have a large impact on China's agricultural trade patterns. Trastuzumab has been approved for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive advanced gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancers (GC and GJC) in combination with chemotherapy. The aim of this HER2 early/advanced gastric epidemiology (HER-EAGLE) study was to evaluate the frequency of HER2 over-expression and to evaluate agreement on HER2 status assessment in GC and GJC patients in local laboratories versus a central laboratory in China. Tumor samples from 734 GC or GJC patients who were enrolled at 11 different hospitals in China were examined. HER2 status was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC), and followed by dual-color silver-enhanced in Situ hybridization (DSISH) in IHC 2+ cases. Clinicopathologic characteristics were collected from all of the patients. HER2-positive tumors were identified in 12.0% (88/734) of the GC and GJC cases. There were significantly higher rates of HER2 positivity in patients with GJC (GJC: 18.1%, GC: 9.7%, P=0.002), and intestinal-type cancers using the Lauren classification (intestinal: 23.6%, diffuse/mixed: 4.3%, P<0.0001). No significant difference in HER2 positivity was identified between resection and biopsy samples, or between early and advanced disease stages. The agreement between local laboratories and the central laboratory on HER2 status scoring was good (kappa=0.86). The main reason of HER2 status discordance between local and the central laboratories was IHC result mis-interpretation in local laboratories. These results suggest that IHC followed by DSISH testing is an accurate and cost-effective procedure in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The present study was designed to study the research output in pathology journals from the United States (USA), Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom (UK), France, and China between 2000 and 2009. Articles published in 67 pathology-related journals were retrieved from the PubMed database. US-American publications, which rank first, accounted for 30.9% of the total world''s output and for 35.4% in the top 10% journals with impact factor (IF) scores. Chinese publications accounted for 2.8% of a total of 67 journals, and for 2.0% in the top 10% journals with IF scores. Our analysis investigated the research output of these six countries and revealed a positive trend in China for the period 2000–2009. Also, in contrast to other top-ranking countries, our results imply that China''s research in the field of pathology falls behind that of the developed countries, and appropriate steps should be taken to improve the role of pathologists in clinical activity and to gear up for high-quality pathological studies. While the epidemiologic association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is established, little is known more than this epidemiologic evidence. We studied a cohort of 587 patients with DLBCL for HBV infection status, clinicopathologic features, and the immunoglobulin variable region in HBV surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients. Eighty-one (81/587, 13.8%) patients were HBsAg-positive. Compared with HBsAg-negative DLBCL, HBsAg-positive DLBCL displayed a younger median onset age (45 vs. 55 years), more frequent involvement of spleen or retroperitoneal lymph node (40.7% vs. 16.0% and 61.7% vs. 31.0% respectively, both p < 0.001), more advanced disease (stage III/IV: 76.5% vs 59.5%, p = 0.003), and significantly worse outcome (2-year overall survival: 47% versus 70%, p < 0.001). In HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients, almost all (45/47, 96%) amino acid sequences of heavy and light chain complementarity determining region 3 exhibited a high homology to antibodies specific for HBsAg, and the majority (45/50, 90%) of IgHV and IgLV genes were mutated. We conclude that 13.8% of DLBCL cases are HBV-associated in HBV-endemic China and show unique clinical features and poor outcomes. Furthermore, our study strongly suggests that HBV-associated DLBCL might arise from HBV antigen-selected B cells.

Introduction: Centrosome aberrations and cell-cycle deregulation have important implications for ovarian cancer development. The AURKA, BRCA1, CCNE1 and CDK2 genes play pivotal roles in centrosome duplication and cell-cycle regulation., Methods: Using a haplotype-based analysis, this study aimed to investigate whether genetic polymorphisms in these four genes may contribute to ovarian cancer susceptibility. A total of 22 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in these four genes were genotyped in 287 cases of ovarian serous cystadenocarcinomas and 618 age-matched cancer-free controls from the Chinese Han population, and then haplotype blocks were reconstructed according to our genotyping data and linkage disequilibrium (LD) status of these SNPs., Results: For AURKA, we found that haplotype GA [rs6064391 (T→G)+rs911162 (G→A)] was strongly associated with decreased ovarian cancer risk (adjusted OR=0.31, 95% CI=0.15-0.63, P=0.0012). For BRCA1, we found that haplotype CGTAG was associated with decreased ovarian cancer risk (adjusted OR=0.64, 95% CI=0.41-0.98, P=0.0417). Moreover, women harboring homozygous GA/CGTAG haplotypes showed the lowest risk (OR=0.12, 95% CI=0.02-0.94, P=0.0438). In CCNE1, the SNPs rs3218035 and rs3218042 were significantly associated with increased ovarian cancer risk (rs3218035: adjusted OR=5.20, 95% CI=1.85-14.52, P=0.0017; rs3218042: adjusted OR=4.98, 95% CI=1.75-14.19, P=0.0027). For CDK2, no significant association was found., Conclusions: This study indicates that genetic polymorphisms of AURKA, BRCA1 and CCNE1 may affect ovarian cancer susceptibility in Chinese Han women., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common cancer among the Chinese population in the southern part of China. The incidence of this cancer drops markedly in northern China. A 6- to 24-fold difference exists between southern and northern Chinese. To investigate the early genetic events involved in the development of this cancer, we have examined loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 9p, being one of the most frequent genetic alterations in NPC, in nasopharyngeal tissues including normal epithelia (NP), dysplastic lesions (DNP) and invasive carcinoma (NPC) from high-risk and low-risk regions. We found similar frequencies of 9p LOH in NPC from high-risk (77.8%) and low-risk (63.6%) regions (p = 0.43). In contrast, 45% of normal nasopharyngeal epithelia from the high-risk region showed 9p LOH, while none of the NP from the low-risk region showed such abnormalities (p = 0.002). Deletions of chromosome 9p were found in 66.7% dysplastic nasopharyngeal lesions. These findings suggest that LOH of chromosome 9p is an early event in the tumorigenesis of NPC. The increased risk of NPC in southern Chinese may be related to early loss of genetic materials as indicated by 9p LOH in the NP from high- and low-risk regions. We also reported previously that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latent infection was present in all high-grade DNP and NPC but not in any NP from fetuses or normal adults.
