In our study, 1,105 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and 1,430 normal controls recruited from Hunan province, southern China were typed for human leukocyte antigen (HLA)‐B locus by Sanger sequencing exons 2–4. Besides confirming the NPC association with HLA‐B*46:01 allele, HLA‐A*02:07‐B*46:01 and HLA‐A*33:03‐B*58:01 haplotypes (all positive), and HLA‐B*13 lineage (negative), all of which were relatively common, strong negative associations were observed for five low‐frequency and rare alleles or lineages, including HLA‐B*07, ‐B*27:04, ‐B*39, ‐B*51:02 and ‐B*55:02, with odds ratio (OR) ranging from 0.16 to 0.3 (all pcorrected < 0.05). These strong protective associations were independent of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between HLA‐A and HLA‐B loci. Further analysis indicated a single amino acid change from histidine to tyrosine at residue 171 is probably crucial for the mutant allele, HLA‐B*51:02, to mediate resistance to NPC. A subset of NPC cases (n = 821) and normal controls (n = 1,035) were tested for antivirus capsid antigen immunoglobulin A (anti‐VCA IgA), which differed drastically between the two groups [67.7% vs. 5.5%, OR (95% confidence interval) = 36 (26.55–48.81), p < 0.0001]. HLA‐B allelic variation did not associate with seropositivity for anti‐VCA IgA in either group. Results from our study show, more clearly than previously, the existence of a cluster of low‐frequency and rare HLA‐B variants conferring low, or very low risk to NPC, a phenomenon not observed in other ethnic groups. Our data shed new insights into genetic susceptibility to NPC in southern Chinese populations. Future independent studies are warranted to replicate the findings reported in our study. What's new? An efficient and effective spatiotemporal prediction algorithm for PM2.5 (i.e. particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers) is urgently needed to study the distribution of PM2.5 over a continuous spatiotemporal domain, which not only helps to make scientific decisions on the prevention and control of PM2.5 pollution but also promotes meaningful assessment of the quantitative relationship between adverse health effects and PM2.5 concentrations over time. Existing spatiotemporal interpolation algorithms are usually based on the assumption that interpolation models follow explicit and simple mathematical descriptions. Unfortunately, the real world does not really follow these perfect mathematical models. Combining data fusion techniques and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN), we present a novel spatiotemporal interpolation model, which is able to achieve high estimation accuracies over a long time period and a large area. By fusing the daily PM2.5 data, meteorological data, elevation data, and land-use data collected from China in 2016, four experiments were conducted in this study to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The study aimed to retrospectively investigate the clinical significance of anti‐rods and rings (anti‐RR) antibodies in antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) test samples of western China. Between January 2016 and November 2018, the laboratory data and clinical details of patients with positive anti‐RR antibodies were collected and analysed. The results showed that total of 197 227 patients tested, 109 453 patients presented with positive ANAs (55.50%), but only 107 patients with positive anti‐RR antibodies (0.10%), including 51 females and 56 males. Diagnose were established in 51 of 107 patients: 25 were hepatopathy (HCV 8/25, HBV 12/25); 13 were autoimmune diseases (AID); and 7 were renal insufficiency; 6 were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We make the conclusions that anti‐RR antibodies have a low prevalence, and there is no gender difference. Anti‐RR antibodies exist other diseases besides hepatitis C, such as HBV, some autoimmune diseases, renal insufficiency and COPD, which we need further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Denitrifying bacterial communities play an important role in nitrogen removal. The diversity, abundance and distribution of denitrifiers can be applied in eutrophication assessment for the bay ecosystems. In this study, the composition and variation of cytochrome cd1-type nitrite reductase gene (nirS)-type denitrifiers in the sediments of Haizhou Bay were investigated by using a PCR-based cloning approach. A total of 156 valid sequences were grouped into 76 OTUs based on 97% sequence similarity. The nirS sequences were identified with their closest-matched sequences from sediments of estuary and eutrophied bay, indicating similarity of the denitrifying bacterial communities in similar coastal environments. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that nitrogen nutrient and dissolved oxygen were the major contributing parameters for the diversity and spatial distribution of denitrifying bacteria of Haizhou Bay. The thermal behavior of coal gangue selected from Zhungeer, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The XRD data indicated that the mineral compositions of the coal gangue were kaolinite, boehmite, and quartz. The coal-gangue sample was considered as belonging to a typical mixture of kaolinite and boehmite. The XRD and FT-IR spectra clearly showed that the structural changes and dehydroxylation of coal gangue occurred with increased temperature from 100 to 900 °C. The reaction activity of coal gangue could be effectively improved by calcination. The calcined coal gangue contained considerable active amorphous AlO and SiO and had significant loss on ignition. The optimum activation temperature range of coal gangue was from 600 to 700 °C. The dissolution contents of SiO and AlO were 92.31 and 64.44 %, respectively, when the calcination temperature at 700 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aim Studies focused on the naturally occurring resistance mutation rate in treatment-naïve chronic hepatitis B ( CHB) patients have set off a furious dispute. We conduct this meta-analysis to appraise the pooled incidence of spontaneous hepatitis B virus resistance mutations worldwide and its distribution. Methods We searched Pub Med, EMBASE, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure until December 31, 2013. Cross-sectional or case-control studies reporting incidence of natural resistance mutations in untreated CHB patients were included. Pooled incidence was performed in fixed- or random-effects models, and heterogeneity among studies was assessed. Results A total of 106 studies were included involving 12 212 naive CHB patients. The summarized incidence of natural mutations worldwide was 5.73% (95% confidence interval [ CI]: 4.85-6.61%), primary mutation rate 5.39% (95% CI: 4.54-6.24%), and secondary mutation rate 2.94% (95% CI: 1.59-4.29%). The pooled incidence reached up to 8.00% (95% CI: 6.63-9.38%) in China, higher than that in other countries (1.88% [95% CI: 1.06-2.69%]). Mutation rt M204 V/ I had the highest incidence of 4.89% (95% CI: 4.13-5.65%), and other primary mutations seldom spontaneously occurred. In subgroup analysis, genotype C hepatitis B virus infection, male, and hepatitis B antigen ( HBe Ag) negative patients had a slightly higher natural mutation rate. Conclusion The resistance mutations occurred frequently in untreated CHB patients, especially in China. The lamivudine resistance had the highest natural prevalence rate, while other nucleos(t)ide analogues showed rarely spontaneous resistance. Purpose -- This paper aims to explore the extent of adequacy and confidence that can be enjoyed by minority shareholders in the supervisory controls on Boards in listed companies in China. Design/methodology/approach -- This study draws upon the legislative controls and case-studies in China. Findings -- Being the cornerstone of the development of capital markets, listed companies are in complementary relationship with the latter, which in turn serves as the financing tool for the former. Recently, the financial markets all over the world have been thrown into deep crisis and the financing functions of the domestic capital markets have almost been paralyzed. In this context, it is high time for us to exert more efforts to improve the institutional arrangements of the supervisory functions in the governance of listed companies in China, to strengthen corporate governance, to restrain the actions and behaviors of major shareholders, directors and the executives, to strengthen their concerned responsibilities, to put greater attention and more protection on the promotion of minor shareholders' confidence on capital markets, and to maintain the steady and sustainable development of capital markets in the long run. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a highly heritable complex inflammatory arthritis disease. Genetic factors are thought to be crucial in the pathogenesis of AS. However, few data are available on the relationship between HLA-DP/DQ and STAT4 polymorphisms and AS susceptibility in the Chinese population. Therefore, we examined HLA-DP/DQ and STAT4 polymorphisms (rs3077, rs9277535, rs7453920 and rs7574865) in a total of 779 subjects, including 400 AS and 379 age- and sex-matched healthy controls in Chinese. No significant difference was observed between AS patients and healthy controls in the allele frequency of rs3077, rs9277535 and rs7574865. However, there was a significant association between the HLA-DQ rs7453920 G/A variant and AS patients, with minor allele A correlated with a reduced risk of AS (allelic frequency, adjusted OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.55–0.78, p = 4.0E − 06; dominant model, adjusted OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.66–0.85, p = 1.1E − 05). Moreover, the haplotypes block AAA and GGA in the HLA gene significantly correlated with reduced risk of AS. This is the first study demonstrating the significant associations of SNP rs7453920 and the haplotypes in the HLA gene with the risk of AS in Southwest Chinese population. Background: Racial and ethnic disparities in stillbirth risk had been documented in most western countries, but it remains unknown in China. This study was to determine whether exist ethnic disparities in stillbirth risk in mainland China., Methods: Pregnancy outcomes and ethnicity data were obtained from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project (NEPHEP), a nationwide prospective population-based cohort study conducted in Yunnan China from 2010-2018. The Han majority and other four main minorities including Yi, Dai, Miao, Hani were investigated in the analysis. The stillbirth hazards were estimated by life-table analysis. The excess stillbirth risk (ESR) was computed for Chinese minorities using multivariable logistic regression., Results: Compared with other four minorities, women in Han majority were more likely to more educated, less multiparous, and less occupied in agriculture. The pattern of stillbirth hazard of Dai women across different gestation intervals were found to be different from other ethnic groups, especially in 20-23 weeks with 3.2 times higher than Han women. The ESR of the Dai, Hani, Miao, and Yi were 45.05, 18.70, -4.17 and 12.28%, respectively. Adjusted for maternal age, education, birth order and other general risk factors, the ethnic disparity still persisted between Dai women and Han women. Adjusted for preterm birth further (gestation age <37 weeks) can reduce 16.91% ESR of Dai women and made the disparity insignificant. Maternal diseases and congenital anomalies explained little for ethnic disparities., Conclusions: We identified the ethnic disparity in stillbirth risk between Dai women and Han women. General risk factors including sociodemographic factors and maternal diseases explained little. Considerable ethnic disparities can be attributed to preterm birth.

Objectives: Posttransplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a major complication after solid organ transplantation. This study is to investigate the association of nine genetic variant factors and PTDM in Chinese Han patients., Methods: HLA-DP (rs3077, rs9277535), HLA-DQ (rs7453920), signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (STAT4) (rs7574865), IL-28B (rs12979860, rs8099917, and rs12980275), and IL-18 (rs1946518 and rs187238) were investigated in 260 liver transplant recipients (PTDM vs non-PTDM) by high-resolution melting curve analysis. Serum interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-17, interferon-γ, inducible protein-10, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1b were analyzed by a Bio-Plex suspension array system (Bio-Plex Multiplex Immunoassays, Bio-Rad, Hercules, CA, USA)., Results: Signal transducer and activator of transcription 4 (rs7574865) T allele and IL-18 (rs1946518) A allele increase the risk for insulin resistance and PTDM., Conclusions: Recipients with STAT4 (rs7574865) T allele are associated with an increased concentration of IL-1β, interferon-γ, monocyte chemoattractant protein, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1b. Deletion of major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related genes A (MICA*Del) was investigated in 3,411 DNA samples from two southern Chinese Han populations (Hunan Han, HNH; Guangdong Han, GDH), two northern Chinese populations (Inner Mongolia Han, IMH; Inner Mongolia Mongol, IMM) and one southeastern Chinese Han population (Fujian Han, FJH) using an in-house polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific priming (PCR-SSP) assay, which enables direct discrimination between heterozygote and homozygote for MICA*Del. MICA*Del showed a frequency ranging from 0.8% in FJH to 5.7% in IMM (P corrected < 0.05), indicating northward increase in frequency of MICA*Del in Chinese populations. In contrast to the association reported recently in a Taiwan Chinese population and a Malaysian Chinese cohort, MICA*Del distribution did not differ between 1,120 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and 1,483 normal controls in the HNH population (1.03% in NPC cases vs 1.18% in the controls, OR (95% CI) = 0.87 (0.51-1.47), p = 0.69). Further gender-stratified analysis also failed to disclose any male-specific association reported in a Taiwan Chinese population. Multi-locus typing of the 94 samples carrying MICA*Del revealed two new haplotypes, HLA-A*11:01-B*13:01-MICA*Del-MICB*009N-DRB1*04:06 and HLA-B*35:01-MICA*Del-MICB*009N-DRB1*15:01, in addition to HLA-B*48-MICA*Del. Unexpectedly, two samples with MICA*Del in the HNH population were each consistently found to have two distinct MICA alleles, indicating the existence of two MICA gene copies on certain HLA haplotypes. An association between polymorphisms in the sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) and the natural course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in the Chinese Han population has been noted. However, it is not known whether these polymorphisms are associated with the risk of developing chronic HBV infection in other racial or ethnic populations. Accordingly, we conducted a candidate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association study in Tibetan and Uygur HBV-infected patients. A total of 1302 subjects including 871 Tibetans and 431 Uygurs were recruited. According to their serological and clinical characteristics, each ethnic group was divided into two groups comprising spontaneous clearance individuals and persistently infected patients. Three SNPs were genotyped by a high resolution melting curve methodology. Among the SNPs, rs2296651 exhibited a minor allele frequency of <0.01. The frequency of allele A at rs4646287 was much higher in Tibetans (9.4% for Tibetans and 4.6% for Uygurs, p<0.001) than in Uygurs, but the frequency of allele A at rs7154439 was the opposite (15.7% for Tibetans and 20.5% for Uygurs, p=0.002). Irrespective of race, no significant differences in the frequency distributions of the three SNP alleles or genotypes were observed between the case and clearance groups. Moreover, none of the NTCP haplotypes were statistically different between the two groups. Data from the Tibetan patients could be grouped by HBeAg status, viral load and HBV genotype; however, no significant differences were found in the SNP genotype distribution for each characteristic. In conclusion, the NTCP polymorphisms we identified tended to be ethnicity-dependent. For Tibetans and Uygurs, no association of the three SNPs (rs7154439, rs4646287 and rs2296651) and their haplotypes with HBV chronicity was observed. In this study, copy number variation (CNV) of NKG2C gene was investigated in 1129 normal, unrelated individuals representing two southern Chinese Han populations (Hunan Han and Guangdong Han), two northern Chinese populations (Inner Mongolia Han and Inner Mongolia Mongol) and one southeastern Chinese Han population (Fujian Han) using polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific priming (PCR-SSP) method. CNV of NKG2C gene did not vary significantly among the five Chinese populations, with NKG2C gene deletion showing a frequency ranging from 0.2031 to 0.2688. Compared with worldwide ethnic groups, very significant difference was observed between the five Chinese populations and the Mexican mestizos (all Pcorrected=0.0025), and between the Fujian Han population and the German population (Pcorrected=0.005). We further examined CNV of NKG2C and HLA-E allelic distribution in 653 patients afflicted with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in Hunan province. Neither CNV of NKG2C nor HLA-E was associated with NPC. There was a trend of reduced NPC risk in individuals who were homozygous for both HLA-E(∗)01:03 and NKG2C deletion (0.46% vs. 2.51%, P=0.0076, Pcorrected=0.0684, OR (95% CI)=0.1794 (0.0473-0.6809)). Objective: In recent years, sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) was newly identified as a hepatitis B virus (HBV) receptor, which partly shed light on the reason for HBV hepatotropism and its host specificity. However, the related researches were limited to in vitro or animal experiments. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of NTCP polymorphisms with HBV natural course in humans., Methods: According to their serological and clinical characteristics, 933 Chinese Han individuals were divided into two major groups, 352 viral clearance controls and 581 persistently infected patients. The latter one included 186 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 395 non-HCC subjects. A total of five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected from HapMap dataset and genotyped by high resolution melting (HRM) curve method., Results: The rs7154439 AA genotype was observed slightly more common in viral clearance group than in persistently infected group [16 (4.5%) subjects vs. 10 (1.7%) subjects. p=0.008, adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.33, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.15-0.75 in a codominant model; and p=0.006, AOR=0.32, 95% CI=0.14-0.72 in a recessive model]. While the rs4646287 AA genotype was observed slightly more frequent in HCC group than in non-HCC group [6 (3.2%) subjects vs. 1 (0.3%) subject. p=0.018, AOR=15.74, 95% CI=1.59-155.54 in a codominant model; and p=0.018, AOR=15.91, 95% CI=1.61-157.01 in a recessive model]. There were no statistically significant differences of allele or haplotype distribution between any two groups., Conclusions: This study suggests that polymorphisms in the NTCP region may be associated with the natural course of HBV infection. The rs7154439 AA genotype was associated with HBV clearance, while the rs4646287 AA genotype was associated with HCC occurrence. In this study, the 5'promoter region of MHC class I chain-related gene A (MICA) was investigated in 104 healthy, unrelated Han individuals recruited from northern China, using PCR-sequencing method. Twelve variable sites were detected, which were in very strong linkage disequilibrium with each other. Twelve different MICA 5'promoter haplotypes were identified, among which Promoter-7 predominated (0.5529). Twenty-six extended haplotypes incorporating MICA 5'promoter and MICA exons 2-5 were observed in this population, 9 of which were in significant linkage disequilibrium (LD). Phylogenetic analysis of 5'promoter refined MICA sub-lineage structure previously constructed according to MICA coding and 3'untranslated regions. Ewens-Watterson homozygosity statistics at MICA 5'promoter region were consistent with neutral expectations. None of the five variable sites detected within the minimal promoter of MICA gene was located in the putative binding sites for transcription factor. Our study provided for the first time the sequence information about 5'promoter of MICA gene at a human population level. In this study, the 3'untranslated region (3'UTR) of MHC class I chain-related gene A (MICA) were investigated in 104 healthy, unrelated Han individuals recruited from northern China, using PCR-sequencing method. Nine polymorphic sites were detected, which were in very strong linkage disequilibrium with each other .Seven different MICA 3'UTR alleles were identified, among which UTR1 predominated (0.6971),followed by UTR2 (0.2356). Twenty-one extended haplotypes incorporating the 3'UTR and MICA exons 2-5 were observed in this population. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the existence of two MICA lineages, each with multiple subsets. The 2 lineages were primarily linked to UTR1 and UTR2 in the 3'UTR, respectively. Ewens-Watterson homozygosity statistics at MICA coding and 3'UTR regions were consistent with neutral expectations. Our data provided for the first time the data of genetic variation in the 3'UTR of MICA gene in human populations. The aim of this study was to detect the association between 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs2910164 G>C and rs3746444 T>C, in pre-miRNA (hsa-mir-146a and hsa-mir-499) and the chronic inflammation in the Chinese Han population with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Two hundred sixty-two Han Chinese patients with RA were recruited in this study. The SNPs were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism. C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and the plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) were measured. There was a significant difference in the levels of CRP and ESR among different genotypes in rs3746444 (p = 0.031 and p = 0.047, respectively). The heterozygote CT had significantly higher levels of CRP and ESR compared with homozygotes CC and TT. No significant association was observed between the SNP rs2910164 and the levels of CRP, ESR, IL-6, TNF-α, and TGF-β1 (all p > 0.05). The results of this study provided the first evidence that the SNP rs3746444 in pre-miR-499 could affect the inflammatory reaction in patients with RA. Major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related gene B (MICB) has only been characterized for allelic variation in very few human populations. The MICB polymorphism remains largely unknown in Chinese populations. In this study, 104 healthy unrelated Han subjects recruited from central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northern China, were investigated by sequence-based typing for MICB allelic variation, the association of MICB alleles with AluyMICB insertion/deletion dimorphism located in MICB intron 1, linkage disequilibrium of MICB with human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B and MICA, and HLA-A-C-B-MICA-MICB haplotypic diversity. Ten kinds of MICB alleles were observed, among which MICB*005:02/010, MICB*002:01, and MICB*004:01 were the most frequent alleles with frequencies of 51.44, 16.35, and 11.54%, respectively. Significant linkage disequilibrium (LD) was observed for 9 of the 21 HLA-B-MICB haplotypes and 6 of the 17 MICA-MICB haplotypes with a frequency >1.5%. In particular, HLA-B*13:01 and HLA-B*13:02, both of which were frequently represented in this population, exhibited a distinct LD pattern with the MICB allele. A new MICB allele, MICB*023, was identified, which differed from MICB*005:02/010 by a single mutation of G to A at position 86 in exon 2, resulting in an amino acid change from arginine to histidine at codon 6. HLA-A*30-C*06-B*13:02-MICA*008:01-MICB*005:02/010 was the most common haplotype, with a frequency of 8.64% in this population. HLA-A*02-C*08-B*48-MICA*Del-MICB*009N demonstrated a frequency of 2.4% in this population. Our results provide for the first time data regarding the MICB genetic polymorphism in northern Chinese Han populations and will form the basis for future studies of the potential role of MICB in allogeneic organ transplantation and disease association in related ethnic groups., (Copyright © 2011 American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
