- Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationships among practicing teachers' epistemic beliefs, pedagogical beliefs and their beliefs about the use of ICT through survey methodology. Participants were 396 high school practicing teachers from mainland China. The path analysis results analyzed via structural equation modelling technique indicated that the systemic relationships among these three types of beliefs were nested. Specifically, teachers' sophisticated beliefs about the source of knowledge were aligned with constructivist pedagogical beliefs and constructivist use of ICT, with one belief highly related to another.

With economic transformation and industrial development, Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI) from southern countries has increased rapidly. The theoretical system established by global north countries with their dominant position in the international investment market has been impacted by global south countries. The existing OFDI theory has always been based on developed countries and can only explain some international investment behavior of southern countries. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is applied to conduct empirical analysis for the impact of the target country's investment climate on the location determinants of OFDI, by applying China and the United States as example which is focusing on 172 countries from 2005 to 2019. The results reveal significant differences in the theoretical system of foreign investment between China and the United States. For China, investment climate factors such as energy, logistics infrastructure, and politics are discover as the main drivers of China's OFDI. However, USA's OFDI is a corporate behavior aimed at economic interests. The differences in OFDI theoretical systems and provides policy advice for northern and southern countries and departments is the major contribution of this research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an inflammation-associated common cancer worldwide. Paejang-san and Mori Cortex Radicis have been traditionally used for treating intestinal inflammatory diseases in Korea and China. In the present study, we developed a new herbal formula as an alternative to CRC treatments, which is composed of two main components of Paejangsan (Patriniae Radix (Paejang in Korean) and Coix Seed (Yiyiin in Korean)), and Mori Cortex Radicis (Sangbekpi in Korean) based on the addition and subtraction theory in traditional medicine, hence the name PSY, and explored the potential therapeutic effects of the new formula PSY in human CRC cells by analyzing viability, cell cycle and apoptosis. We found that PSY ethanol extract (EtOH-Ex), but not water extract, significantly suppressed the viability of human CRC cells, and synergistically decreased the cell proliferation compared to each treatment of Patriniae Radix and Coix Seed extract (PY) or Mori Cortex Radicis extract (S), suggesting the combination of PY and S in a 10-to-3 ratio for the formula PSY. PSY EtOH-Ex in the combination ratio reduced cell viability but induced cell cycle arrest at the G
2 /M and sub-G1 phases as well as apoptosis in CRC cells. In addition, the experimental results of Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining and reporter assays showed that PSY also inhibited STAT3 by reducing its phosphorylation and nuclear localization, which resulted in lowering STAT3-mediated transcriptional activation. In addition, PSY regulated upstream signaling molecules of STAT3 by inactivating JAK2 and Src and increasing SHP1. Moreover, the chemical profiles of PSY from UPLC-ESI-QTOF MS/MS analysis revealed 38 phytochemicals, including seven organic acids, eight iridoids, two lignans, twelve prenylflavonoids, eight fatty acids, and one carbohydrate. Furthermore, 21 potentially bioactive compounds were highly enriched in the PSY EtOH-Ex compared to the water extract. Together, these results indicate that PSY suppresses the proliferation of CRC cells by inhibiting the STAT3 signaling pathway, suggesting PSY as a potential therapeutic agent for treating CRC and 21 EtOH-Ex-enriched phytochemicals as anti-cancer drug candidates which may act by inhibiting STAT3. CONTROL elements (Nuclear reactors) , *FAST reactors - Abstract
In the reactivity measurements of the China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) start-up tests, five independent control rods were moved to compensate for the reactivity insertion. Since the recorded control rod positions were converted to reactivity via S-curves (rod worth curves), any uncertainty in the S-curves can propagate to all reactivity measurements. In this work, we rigorously derived the uncertainty of the reactivity in terms of the statistical uncertainty of the S-curves with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Additionally, the average error of the control rod worth from the MC calculation was estimated from experiments and embedded into the uncertainty formulation. The formulation shows that the error of the reactivity is highly correlated to the changes in the control rod position during the reactivity measurements. McCARD MC simulations were then conducted for the CEFR start-up tests, and the calculated reactivity and uncertainty were compared with the measurements. The main error factor of each reactivity calculation was figured out by quantifying the uncertainty components. With the uncertainty formulation, the calculation results showed a better agreement compared with the measurements, as the relative errors were observed mostly within 2 σ of the uncertainty. H7N9 Influenza ,INFLUENZA ,INFLUENZA vaccines ,INFLUENZA A virus, H7N9 subtype ,IMMUNE response - Abstract
Human infections with avian-origin H7N9 influenza A viruses were first reported in China, and an approximately 38% human mortality rate was described across six waves from February 2013 to September 2018. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce morbidity and mortality during influenza epidemics and pandemics. Egg-based platforms for the production of influenza vaccines are labor-intensive and unable to meet the surging demand during pandemics. Therefore, cell culture-based technology is becoming the alternative strategy for producing influenza vaccines. The current influenza H7N9 vaccine virus (NIBRG-268), a reassortant virus from A/Anhui/1/2013 (H7N9) and egg-adapted A/PR/8/34 (H1N1) viruses, could grow efficiently in embryonated eggs but not mammalian cells. Moreover, a freezing-dry formulation of influenza H7N9 vaccines with long-term stability will be desirable for pandemic preparedness, as the occurrence of influenza H7N9 pandemics is not predictable. In this study, we adapted a serum-free anchorage-independent suspension Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell line for producing influenza H7N9 vaccines and compared the biochemical characteristics and immunogenicity of three influenza H7N9 vaccine antigens produced using the suspension MDCK cell-based platform without freeze-drying (S-WO-H7N9), the suspension MDCK cell-based platform with freeze-drying (S-W-H7N9) or the egg-based platform with freeze-drying (E-W-H7N9). We demonstrated these three vaccine antigens have comparable biochemical characteristics. In addition, these three vaccine antigens induced robust and comparable neutralizing antibody (NT; geometric mean between 1016 and 4064) and hemagglutinin-inhibition antibody (HI; geometric mean between 640 and 1613) titers in mice. In conclusion, the serum-free suspension MDCK cell-derived freeze-dried influenza H7N9 vaccine is highly immunogenic in mice, and clinical development is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Slope structures and surface terrains are two significant factors affecting the deformation behavior of mining slopes in mountainous areas. This research is aimed at investigating the deformation characteristics of a mining slope wielding Particle Flow Code (PFC), with 9 different mining configurations (i.e., horizontal distance from extracted panel center to slope shoulder, D = −200 m, −150 m, −100 m, −50 m, 0 m, 50 m, 100 m, 150 m, and 200 m). A representative slope in Faer Town, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province, China, was selected, which was characterized by soft and hard interbedded rock strata. The results indicated that the overlying rock mass tended to move towards the sloping surface with mining beneath sloping terrain, which brought an asymmetrical subsidence funnel, and formed a wider relative disturbance range on the slope surface. With the vertical subsidence increasing additionally, the stability of the overall slope deteriorated. A safe mining range should be proposed based on evaluating the time-dependent deformation behavior at the slope shoulder and the overall slope stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reservoir bank collapse is a common hydrogeological problem in mountainous areas in the southwest region of China. This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the mechanisms and characteristics of the bank collapse problem in gravel soil, replicating the conditions of the Pubugou reservoir in Sichuan Province of China. A laboratory model was set up to monitor the hydrological responses and deformation development of the bank slopes under different slope gradients (i.e., 30°, 35° and 40°) and water level conditions (i.e., constant water level and fluctuating water level). The innovative setup enabled real-time monitoring of moisture content, pore-water pressure and deformation of the slope with the consideration of wave scouring effect. Results showed that the increase in the slope gradient would not only increase the slope mass sliding force, but also shorten the infiltration distance, making the slope more prone to saturation. The fluctuation in water level would destabilize the bank slope by deteriorating both the physical and mechanical properties of the soil, generating hydrodynamic pressure with the water level drawdown, and expanding the localized collapses to form a larger scale failure. The overall bank collapse mechanism can be divided into three stages: (1) partial collapse stage, (2) expansion and development stage, and (3) final stabilization stage. A new empirical equation was proposed to correlate the slope gradient, slope height, and coefficient of permeability with the bank collapse width in gravel soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since 1997, the highly pathogenic influenza H5N1 virus has spread from Hong Kong. According to the WHO bulletin report, the H5N1 virus is a zoonotic disease threat that has infected more than 850 humans, causing over 450 deaths. In addition, an outbreak of another new and highly pathogenic influenza virus (H7N9) occurred in 2013 in China. These highly pathogenic influenza viruses could potentially cause a worldwide pandemic. it is crucial to develop a rapid production platform to meet this surge demand against any possible influenza pandemic. A potential solution for this problem is the use of cell-based bioreactors for rapid vaccine production. These novel bioreactors, used for cell-based vaccine production, possess various advantages. For example, they enable a short production time, allow for the handling highly pathogenic influenza in closed environments, and can be easily scaled up. In this study, two novel disposable cell-based bioreactors, BelloCell and TideCell, were used to produce H5N1 clade II and H7N9 candidate vaccine viruses (CVVs). Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells were used for the production of these influenza CVVs. A novel bench-scale bioreactor named BelloCell bioreactor was used in the study. All culturing conditions were tested and scaled to 10 L industrial-scale bioreactor known as TideCell002. The performances of between BelloCell and TideCell were similar in cell growth, the average MDCK cell doubling time was slightly decreased to 25 hours. The systems yielded approximately 39.2 and 18.0 μg/ml of HA protein with the 10-liter TideCell002 from the H5N1 clade II and H7N9 CVVs, respectively. The results of this study not only highlight the overall effectiveness of these bioreactors but also illustrate the potential of maintaining the same outcome when scaled up to industrial production, which has many implications for faster vaccine production. Although additional studies are required for process optimization, the results of this study are promising and show that oscillating bioreactors may be a suitable platform for pandemic influenza virus production. Chip equipment maker J.E.T. Co.'s shares have more than doubled since their September debut in Tokyo, driven by expectations of increased semiconductor sales due to US and Japan initiatives. The company, which currently relies on China for half of its revenue, is taking steps to reduce its dependence on the Chinese market by building a factory in Japan and establishing a sales office in the US. J.E.T. aims to expand its customer base and increase sales in the US and Japan, while also exploring potential acquisitions to expand its product lineup. However, some skeptics believe there may be limited room for growth in the Japanese market. [Extracted from the article]

China has launched an international charm offensive in earnest since around 2004. This has consequentially stirred up expensive and intense debates over the effectiveness of China’s soft power and public diplomacy. Yet, to date, no one has investigated the change in public perceptions of China in any particular country since China’s launch of its public diplomacy. In this article, the authors scrutinize South Koreans’ evolving views of China between 2002 and 2017, decipher the factors that have influenced their views of China based on in-depth analysis of various surveys, and consider the relevant opinions of South Korean scholars and the public. The findings suggest that China’s charm offensive has not been effective during the past decade. Not only have South Koreans’ views on China’s global influence deteriorated between 2004 and 2017, but their favorable opinion of China has not improved over the same period. In terms of soft power, China has surpassed Japan since around 2013, yet still lags far behind the U.S. Given the characteristics of the negative factors related to ideological, emotional, and conflicting strategic interests, it is unlikely that we will see a positive trend in South Koreans’ views on China for some years ahead. The origin of PM 2.5 has long been the subject of debate and stable isotopic tools have been applied to decipher. In this study, weekly PM 2.5 samples were simultaneously collected at an urban (Seoul) and rural (Baengnyeong Island) site in Korea from January 2014 through February 2016. The seasonal variation of isotopic species showed significant seasonal differences with sinusoidal variation. The isotopic results implied that isotope species from Baengnyeong were mostly originated from coal combustion during China's winter heating seasons, whereas in summer, the isotopic patterns observed that were more likely to be from marine. In Seoul, coal combustion related isotopic patterns increased during China's winter heating period while vehicle related isotopic patterns were dominated whole seasons by default. Therefore, aerosol formation was originated from long-range transported coal combustion-related NO x by vehicle-related NH 3 in Seoul. δN-NH 4 + in Seoul showed highly enriched 15 N compositions in all seasons, indicating that NH 3 from vehicle emission is the important source of NH 4 + in PM 2.5 in Seoul. In addition, Baengnyeong should be consistently considered as a key region for observing the changes of isotopic features depend on the contribution of individual emissions to the atmospheric as a result of the reduction of coal consumption in China. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there were gender-specific depressive symptom profiles or gender-specific patterns of psychotropic agent usage in Asian patients with depression. Method: Clinical data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for Antidepressant study (1171 depressed patients) were used to determine gender differences by analysis of covariates for continuous variables and by logistic regression analysis for discrete variables. In addition, a binary logistic regression model was fitted to identify independent clinical correlates of the gender-specific pattern on psychotropic drug usage. Results: Men were more likely than women to have loss of interest (adjusted odds ratio = 1.379, p = 0.009), fatigue (adjusted odds ratio = 1.298, p = 0.033) and concurrent substance abuse (adjusted odds ratio = 3.793, p = 0.008), but gender differences in other symptom profiles and clinical features were not significant. Men were also more likely than women to be prescribed adjunctive therapy with a second-generation antipsychotic (adjusted odds ratio = 1.320, p = 0.044). However, men were less likely than women to have suicidal thoughts/acts (adjusted odds ratio = 0.724, p = 0.028). Binary logistic regression models revealed that lower age (odds ratio = 0.986, p = 0.027) and current hospitalization (odds ratio = 3.348, p < 0.0001) were independent clinical correlates of use of second-generation antipsychotics as adjunctive therapy for treating depressed Asian men. Conclusion: Unique gender-specific symptom profiles and gender-specific patterns of psychotropic drug usage can be identified in Asian patients with depression. Hence, ethnic and cultural influences on the gender preponderance of depression should be considered in the clinical psychiatry of Asian patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Avian-origin influenza A (H7N9) viruses emerged as human pathogens in China in early 2013 and have killed >100 persons. Influenza vaccines are mainly manufactured using egg-based technology which could not meet the surging demand during influenza pandemics. In this study, we evaluated cell-based influenza H7N9 vaccines in ferrets. An egg-derived influenza H7N9 reassortant vaccine virus was adapted in MDCK cells. Influenza H7N9 whole virus vaccine antigen was manufactured using a microcarrier-based culture system. Immunogenicity and protection of the vaccine candidates with three different formulations (300μg aluminum hydroxide, 1.5μg HA, and 1.5μg HA plus 300μg aluminum hydroxide) were evaluated in ferrets. In ferrets receiving two doses of vaccination, geometric mean titers of hemagglutination (HA) inhibition and neutralizing antibodies were <10 and <40 for the control group (adjuvant only), 17 and 80 for the unadjuvanted (HA only) group, and 190 and 640 for the adjuvanted group (HA plus adjuvant), respectively. After challenge with wild-type influenza H7N9 viruses, virus titers in respiratory tracts of the adjuvanted group were significantly lower than that in the control, and unadjuvanted groups. MDCK cell-derived influenza H7N9 whole virus vaccine candidate is immunogenic and protective in ferrets and clinical development is highly warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Polyporus umbellatus sclerotia have been used as a diuretic agent in China for over two thousand years. A shortage of the natural P. umbellatus has prompted researchers to induce sclerotial formation in the laboratory. Methodology/Principal Finding: P. umbellatus cultivation in a sawdust-based substrate was investigated to evaluate the effect of low temperature conditions on sclerotial formation. A phenol-sulfuric acid method was employed to determine the polysaccharide content of wild P. umbellatus sclerotia and mycelia and sclerotia grown in low-temperature treatments. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, expressed as the fluorescence intensity of mycelia during sclerotial differentiation was determined. Analysis of ROS generation and sclerotial formation in mycelia after treatment with the antioxidants such as diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI), apocynin (Apo), or vitamin C were studied. Furthermore, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of sclerotial differentiation were observed. Sclerotia were not induced by continuous cultivation at 25°C. The polysaccharide content of the artificial sclerotia is 78% of that of wild sclerotia. In the low-temperature treatment group, the fluorescent intensity of ROS was higher than that of the room temperature (25°C) group which did not induce sclerotial formation all through the cultivation. The antioxidants DPI and Apo reduced ROS levels and did not induce sclerotial formation. Although the concentration-dependent effects of vitamin C (5–15 mg mL
−1 ) also reduced ROS generation and inhibited sclerotial formation, using a low concentration of vitamin C (1 mg mL−1 ) successfully induced sclerotial differentiation and increased ROS production. Conclusions/Significance: Exposure to low temperatures induced P. umbellatus sclerotial morphogenesis during cultivation. Low temperature treatment enhanced ROS in mycelia, which may be important in triggering sclerotial differentiation in P. umbellatus. Moreover, the application of antioxidants impaired ROS generation and inhibited sclerotial formation. Our findings may help to provide new insights into the biological mechanisms underlying sclerotial morphogenesis in P. umbellatus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this paper, we empirically examine the volatility process of China's stock market returns using daily and weekly Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indices during January 1990 to August 2008. To investigate the property of the process, we used the FIGARCH (fractionally integrated GARCH) model including GARCH and IGARCH processes as special cases. Since the FIGARCH model allows fractional integration order, it can detect hyperbolically decaying volatility processes which cannot be explained by previous models with integer integration order. Our results show that the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock indices exhibit long-term dependencies. The long memory properties of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets do not seem to be spuriously induced without exception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present paper was to compare the efficacy and safety of duloxetine with paroxetine in the acute treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). In a randomized, double-blind trial of 8 weeks active treatment, patients with non-psychotic MDD were randomized to duloxetine 60 mg ( n = 238) or paroxetine 20 mg ( n = 240) once daily. Efficacy was primarily measured on change in the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD
17 ) using a non-inferiority test with a margin of 2.2. Secondary efficacy measures included the HAMD17 subscales, Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, Clinical Global Impressions–Severity, Patient Global Impressions–Improvement, Somatic Symptoms Inventory and Visual Analog Scales (VAS) for pain. Safety measures included treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAE), vital signs, weight, laboratory analyses and electrocardiograms. Non-inferiority of duloxetine to paroxetine was demonstrated because the upper bound of the confidence interval for mean difference in HAMD17 change (0.71) was less than the non-inferiority margin. Secondary efficacy end-points did not differ significantly between treatments with the exception of VAS back pain, where the pooled mean was lower in the duloxetine group (17.1) compared with the paroxetine group (20.3, P = 0.048). No significant differences were observed in the number of early discontinuations and overall TEAE. However, significantly greater proportions of patients in the duloxetine group experienced nausea and palpitations. No clinically relevant changes in laboratory values, vital signs, weight or electrocardiograms were observed with either treatment. The present study verifies the utility of duloxetine as an efficacious and safe treatment for both emotional and physical symptoms of MDD in this predominantly Asian patient sample. ENTEROVIRUSES , *CLINICAL pathology , *ECHO viruses , *VACCINES , *ACQUISITION of data , *CLINICAL trials - Abstract
Enteroviruses (EV), the major pathogens of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina, affect millions of children each year. Most human enteroviruses cause self-limited infections except polioviruses, enterovirus A71 (EV-A71), enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), and several echoviruses (Echo) and coxsackieviruses (CV). Especially, EV-A71 has repeatedly caused large-scale outbreaks in the Asia-Pacific region since 1997. Some Asian countries have experienced cyclical outbreaks of severe EV-A71 infections and initiated development of EV-A71 vaccines. Five EV-A71 vaccine candidates have been clinically evaluated and three of them were approved for marketing in China. However, none of the China-approved products seek marketing approval in other countries. This situation supports a role for collaboration among Asian countries to facilitate clinical trials and licensure of EV-A71 vaccines. Additionally, enterovirus D68 outbreaks have been reported in the US and Taiwan currently and caused severe complications and deaths. Hence, an Asia-Pacific Network for Enterovirus Surveillance (APNES) has been established to estimate disease burden, understand virus evolution, and facilitate vaccine development through harmonizing laboratory diagnosis and data collection. Founded in 2017, the APNES is comprised of internationally recognized experts in the field of enterovirus in Asian countries working to raise awareness of this potentially fatal and debilitating disease. This article demonstrated the summaries of the first expert meeting, 2017 International Workshop on Enterovirus Surveillance and Vaccine Development, held by APNES in Taipei, Taiwan, March 2017. • The new vaccine was produced using a vaccine strain expressing P1 of the O Taiwan97 strain. • No significant immunological difference in antibody production was observed in cattle and pigs. • The complete protection in the vaccinated pigs induced from the challenge of the SEA topotype virus (O/Jincheon/SKR/2014). Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease and causes economic damage at a national level. In particular, the type O FMD virus (FMDV) is a serotype that causes FMD outbreaks most frequently in the world. In recent years, Southeast Asia (SEA), Middle East-South Asia (ME-SA), and Cathay topotype-mediated FMD are prevalent in Asia, among which the SEA and ME-SA topotypes cause a majority of the outbreaks. The SEA topotype virus is more likely to infect both cattle and pigs simultaneously, thereby resulting in more severe damages; thus, it is necessary to study the protection ability of the candidate vaccines of this topotype after immunization. In this study, an experimental vaccine for pigs was produced using a vaccine strain that contains the structural protein of the O Taiwan97 strain, which was derived from the Cathay topotype, and its effect was evaluated. In the immunization test in pigs and cattle, the antibody titers were found to be elevated two weeks after immunization and very high titers of neutralizing antibodies were formed after four weeks. After the second inoculation, very high titers of neutralizing antibodies were produced in both species in the fourth week after immunization, and the antibodies maintained for up to six months and three months in cattle and pigs, respectively. No significant immunological difference in antibody production was observed in cattle and pigs. This study confirmed that complete protection from the challenge of the SEA topotype virus (O/Jincheon/SKR/2014), although the antibody titers against O/Jincheon/SKR/2014 strain were not that high, was achieved through immunization with the newly developed Cathay topotype vaccine in pigs. - Abstract
The co-processing of secondary wastes during ordinary Portland cement (OPC) can result in high heavy metal concentrations in OPC products. However, earlier studies have not evaluated the concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in OPC as a function of secondary input materials. Further, the health risk assessment (HRA) model has, thus far, has not been employed to assess the potential health risks associated with secondary raw materials and secondary fuels in OPC. Hence, to address these knowledge gaps, herein, monthly data for six HMs in the input materials and fuels from seven OPC manufacturers in the Republic of Korea were analyzed and modeled. Pb and Cu concentrations were found to be approximately 10-200 and 4-200 times higher than those of the other HMs, respectively. Furthermore, maximum Pb and Cu concentrations were 2-3 and 2-5 times higher than those reported in other countries, respectively. The quantity of input material had a significant influence on the observed patterns, and secondary raw materials, secondary additives, and secondary fuels were also determined to be important. Based on HRA assessment, although the risk levels were within permissible ranges, carcinogenic hazards attributable to Cr and Pb were not negligible. The results can aid in informed decision making and in implementing effective measures for managing risks associated with HMs in the OPC industry, thereby ameliorating threats to human health and environment., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Aim: Depressive disorders are common in old age. Antipsychotics (APs) are often used as an adjunctive treatment with antidepressants (ADs) in this population but its patterns of use in Asia are not known. This study explored the rate of combination of APs and ADs in older adult psychiatric patients in Asia., Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the database of a multicentre study which recorded participants' basic demographical and clinical data in standardised format in 10 Asian countries and territories. The data were analysed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses., Results: A total of 955 older adult psychiatric in- and outpatients were included in this study. The proportion of concurrent AP and AD use was 32.0%, ranging from 23.3% in Korea to 44.0% in Taiwan. Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that younger age, inpatient status and diagnosis of schizophrenia, anxiety and other mental disorders were significantly related to a higher proportion of concurrent use of APs and ADs., Conclusion: Around a third of older adult psychiatric patients had concurrent AP and AD use in the Asian countries/regions surveyed. Considering the uncertain effectiveness and questionable safety of the AP and AD combination in this patient population, such should be cautiously used., (© 2019 Japanese Psychogeriatric Society.)

- Abstract
Introduction: Research in prescription pattern of antidepressants in Asia is lacking. This study aims to compare the antidepressants prescription pattern in Asia in 2003-2004 and 2013., Methods: The Research in East Asia Psychotropic Prescription Pattern on Antidepressants (REAP-AD) had worked collaboratively in 2003-2004 (REAP-AD 2003/2004) and 2013 (REAP-AD 2013) to study the prescription pattern of antidepressants in Asia. The REAP-AD 2013 study was conducted in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand using a unified research protocol and questionnaire., Results: Forty psychiatric centers participated in REAP-AD 2013 and a total of 2,319 patients receive antidepressants were analyzed. In 2013, 39.6% of the antidepressant prescriptions were for diagnoses other thandepressive disorder compared with 38.4% in REAP-AD 2003/2004. Out of all the antidepressants listed in the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification index by the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Drug Statistics Methodology (Oslo), only 38% antidepressants were prescribed in participating centers in 2013 compared with 46% in REAP-AD 2003/2004. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were the most common antidepressant prescribed in the participating centers, which was similar to the 2003-2004 survey. Prescription of newer generation antidepressants had increased in 2013 survey; on the contrary, prescription of tricyclic antidepressants had reduced., Discussion: This study has contributed significantly in relation to the changing patterns of antidepressant use in all the participating Asian centers in the last 10 years. The findings are important in shaping optimal antidepressant prescription and future policy making., (© 2015 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

- Abstract
Background: Recently, 41 new genetic susceptibility loci for breast cancer risk were identified in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted in European descendants. Most of these risk variants have not been directly replicated in Asian populations., Methods: We evaluated nine of those nonreplication loci in East Asians to identify new risk variants for breast cancer in these regions. First, we analyzed single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in these regions using data from two GWAS conducted among Chinese and Korean women, including 5,083 cases and 4,376 controls (stage 1). In each region, we selected an SNP showing the strongest association with breast cancer risk for replication in an independent set of 7,294 cases and 9,404 controls of East Asian descents (stage 2). Logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) as a measure of the association of breast cancer risk and genetic variants., Results: Two SNPs were replicated in stage 2 at P < 0.05: rs1419026 at 6q14 [per allele OR, 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03-1.12; P = 3.0 × 10(-4)] and rs941827 at 10q25 (OR, 0.92, 95% CI, 0.89-0.96; P = 5.3 × 10(-5)). The association with rs941827 remained highly statistically significant after adjusting for the risk variant identified initially in women of European ancestry (OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.82-0.97; P = 5.3 × 10(-5))., Conclusion: We identified a new breast cancer risk variant at 10q25 in East Asian women., Impact: Results from this study improve the understanding of the genetic basis for breast cancer.

- Abstract
In a consortium including 23 637 breast cancer patients and 25 579 controls of East Asian ancestry, we investigated 70 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 67 independent breast cancer susceptibility loci recently identified by genome-wide association studies (GWASs) conducted primarily in European-ancestry populations. SNPs in 31 loci showed an association with breast cancer risk at P < 0.05 in a direction consistent with that reported previously. Twenty-one of them remained statistically significant after adjusting for multiple comparisons with the Bonferroni-corrected significance level of <0.0015. Eight of the 70 SNPs showed a significantly different association with breast cancer risk by estrogen receptor (ER) status at P < 0.05. With the exception of rs2046210 at 6q25.1, the seven other SNPs showed a stronger association with ER-positive than ER-negative cancer. This study replicated all five genetic risk variants initially identified in Asians and provided evidence for associations of breast cancer risk in the East Asian population with nearly half of the genetic risk variants initially reported in GWASs conducted in European descendants. Taken together, these common genetic risk variants explain ~10% of excess familial risk of breast cancer in Asian populations.

- Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to review the prescription patterns of antidepressants in different countries in East Asia. The survey was conducted in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan from October 2003 to March 2004 using the unified research protocol and questionnaire. Twenty teaching hospitals and major psychiatric hospitals participated and a total of 1898 patients receiving antidepressants were analyzed. The survey provided a number of interesting characteristics on the prescription patterns of antidepressant in East Asia. Out of 56 antidepressants listed in the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification (ATC) index by the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Drug Statistics Methodology (Oslo), only 26 antidepressants were prescribed in participating countries in East Asia. On average 38.4% of prescriptions of antidepressants were for patients with diagnoses other than depressive disorders. The availability and commonly prescribed antidepressants varied greatly by country. The selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) and other newer antidepressants were prescribed in approximately 77.0% of all cases. At the time of the survey, only two SSRI medications were available in Japan. However, five types of SSRI were available and were often prescribed in Korea.
