The Madi rare metal granite is a complex massif, which contains a variety of rare metals, such as Nb, Ta, Li, and Be. In this paper, the geochemical characteristics of the granite were obtained by multi‐collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS). The precise crystalline age of the granite was obtained from monazite U‐Pb dating, and the source of the granite was determined using Li‐Nd isotopes. The Madi rare metal granite is a high‐K (calc‐alkaline), peraluminous, S‐type granite. The U‐Pb monazite age indicates that the crystalline age of the granite is 175.6 Ma, which is Early Jurassic. The granite is characterized by a relatively wide range of δ7Li values (+2.99‰ to +5.83‰) and high lithium concentrations (181 ppm to 1022 ppm). The lithium isotopic composition of the granite does not significantly correlate with the degree of magmatic differentiation. An insignificant amount of lithium isotope fractionation occurred during the granitic differentiation. The lithium isotopic composition of the granite significantly differs from that of the wall rock, but it is very similar to that of a primitive mantle peridotite xenolith (mean δ7Li value +3.5‰). The plot of Li concentration versus δ7Li indicates that the Li isotopic composition of the granite is similar to that of island arc lavas. Background: A large cranial defect following decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a common sequela in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Such a defect can cause severe disturbance of cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation. This study investigated the impact of cranioplasty on CBF in these patients. Methods: Patients who underwent DC and secondary cranioplasty were prospectively studied for a severe TBI. CT perfusion was used to measure CBF before and after cranioplasty. The basal ganglia, parietal lobe and occipital lobe on the decompressed side were chosen as zones of interest for CBF evaluation. Results: Nine patients representing nine cranioplasty procedures were included in the study. Before cranioplasty, CBF on the decompressed side was lower than that on the contralateral side. During the early stage (10 days) after cranioplasty, CBF on the decompressed side was increased and this increase was significant in the parietal and occipital lobe. CBF was also increased on the contralateral side. In addition, the difference in CBF between the contralateral side and the decompressed side was reduced after cranioplasty. Further, the CT perfusion showed that the CBFs decreased again 3 months post-cranioplasty among four cases, but was still higher than those before cranioplasty. Conclusions: This study indicates that cranioplasty may increase CBF and benefit the recovery in patients with DC for TBI. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Streptococcus agalactiae is the main pathogen of tilapia, causing huge economic losses to the tilapia aquaculture industry in China. To elucidate the role of the EII complexes of the cellobiose-phosphotransferase system (cel-PTS) in the regulation of S. agalactiae virulence, the △ cel-EII mutants of a high virulence strain (THN0901) and a low virulence strain (TFJ0901) were constructed using homologous recombination. The results showed that after the deletion of cel-EII complexes, the biological characteristics of THN0901 and TFJ0901 were consistent, including their cellobiose metabolism. Their biofilm formation abilities were significantly reduced (P < 0.01), and their ability to adhere to tilapia brain cells and compete when mixed in vitro and in vivo were enhanced. The virulence and histopathological lesions caused by △ cel-EII -TFJ0901 were significantly enhanced relative to those of TFJ0901, while △ cel-EII -THN0901 showed no significant differences relative to THN0901. The histopathological lesions caused by △ cel-EII -TFJ0901 tend to be serious, especially in the liver, spleen, and heart. The expression levels of manA and ascA/C of PTS, ciaR and dltR of two-component signal transduction systems (TCS), and pavA , bca and spb1 of virulence genes of △ cel-EII -TFJ0901 were significantly upregulated compared with TFJ0901 (P < 0.01), whereas those of △ cel-EII -THN0901 were significantly downregulated (P < 0.01), or somewhat downregulated, compared with THN0901. Taken together, cel-EII complexes may have a negative effect on the virulence of TFJ0901 by regulating the expression of virulence-related genes, but the negative regulation mechanism of the cel-EII complex has no obvious effect on the virulence of THN0901. • Cel-EII improves the biofilm formation ability in S. agalactiae. • Cel-EII negatively regulates the ability of adhesion and mixed competition ability. • Cel-EII involves in regulating some genes of PTS, TCS and virulence proteins. • Cel-EII-mediated virulence regulation is different in low- and high-virulence strains. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of trypanosomes on cultured largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and describe the taxonomic identification of the parasite. The effects of the parasite on M. salmoides were examined based on clinical symptoms, hemograms, histopathology, and serum biochemistry. Diseased fish showed typical clinical symptoms of trypanosomiasis, which included lethargy, anorexia, and histopathological lesions in the liver, head kidney, and spleen. The serum of diseased fish had significantly lower concentrations of glucose, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein, and significantly higher alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities. The morphology of the trypanosomes was also analyzed using light microscopy, and their 18S rDNA sequence was analyzed to establish genetic relationships with other known strains. We found that the trypomastigote form of the trypanosomes from M. salmoides was similar to those isolated from Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. The trypanosomes had a slender and narrow body with a relatively long free flagellum, not well-developed undulating membrane, and an oval kinetoplast located near the subterminal posterior end of the body. The 18S rDNA sequences of the trypanosome from M. salmoides had the highest similarity (99.8%) with that of P. fulvidraco, suggesting they are identical species. Based on the differences in morphological characteristics and 18S rDNA sequence compared to trypanosomes isolated from other freshwater fish, it is considered as a new species and we propose the name Trypanosoma micropteri n. sp.

A high performance versatile composite hollow fiber nanofiltration (NF) membrane is reported for the separation of glyphosate from saline waste streams. Preparation of SPEEK based on an amorphous poly (ether ether ketone, PEEK) was investigated. The membrane was prepared by coating sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) onto a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) hollow fiber membrane. The composite membrane was characterized by water permeability, scanning electron microscopy, and rejection toward sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄), sodium chloride (NaCl), and calcium chloride (CaCl₂). About 90% rejection toward sulfate anions and only 10% rejection for calcium cations were obtained. A water permeability around 10-13 LMHBar and 90% rejection for polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a molecular weight of 4000-6000 Da were observed. In the separation of glyphosate from saline wastewater, the membrane rejected less than 20% of NaCl and higher than 90% of glyphosate at an operating pressure of 5 bars and pH = 11.0. An economic analysis indicated that the cost for recovery of glyphosate was comparably low to the value gained by an increase in the productivity. Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deterioration of language functions. The Han language bears some unique features from the Latin languages; however, the features of PPA in the Han language-speaking population are not well understood. In this study, we performed a 3-year follow-up on a Han language-speaking PPA patient with corresponding changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). During the early stage, linguistic analysis revealed several symptoms including difficulty with auditory comprehension, right-left disorientation, reading disorders, and agraphia, specifically the execution of serial oral instructions. This Chinese PPA patient presented with a reading disorder, but his word comprehension ability remained intact. There are two different possible modalities of incorrect writing in this case. The patient also presented with noun-verb double dissociation. The early-stage MRI showed atrophy of the left frontal lobe, which was most severe in the inferior frontal gyrus. Three years later, the patient was found to have progressive atrophy in the parietal, frontal, and temporal lobes, among which the frontal lobe remained the most severely affected region. The brain imaging of the Chinese-speaking PPA patient showed changes similar to those of a Latin language-speaking PPA patient. The prominent change was asymmetrical atrophy in the frontal and temporal lobes. This is the first report of noun-verb double dissociation existing in a Chinese-language speaking PPA patient. The dissociation may be related to an impaired function of the inferior frontal gyrus, which is likely associated with verb-naming in Chinese-speaking people. Several unique features were observed in this case, including impairment in writing ability.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an autosomal recessive, lipid storage disorder which is extremely rare in the Chinese population. It is characterized by progressive neurologic dysfunction and enlargement of tendon xanthomas, and is often accompanied with neuropsychiatric symptoms. Few reports are available regarding depression and antidepressant medication in CTX patients.
