Objective: To comprehend the status and changing trend in the burden of refractive errors in China from 1990 to 2019, and to furnish data-driven support for the formulation of rational strategies in refractive error prevention and control. Methods: Using the Global Burden of Disease Database 2019, data on refractive error prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) in China from 1990 to 2019 were extracted and their standardized rates were calculated. The trend of refractive error prevalence, age, period, and gender was analyzed using joinpoint regression models. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the number of cases, prevalence rate, and YLD rate of refractive errors in China showed an upward trend, which was consistent with global trends. However, the magnitude of the increase in these parameters was higher than the global average. Conversely, the age-standardized prevalence rate and age-standardized YLD rate demonstrated a declining trend, which was also consistent with global trends, but the reduction rate was less pronounced compared to global levels. Notably, all indicators for females, including prevalence and YLD, exceeded those of males. The prevalence and YLD rates of refractive errors in China increased with age. The older individuals had higher rates compared to younger individuals. In 1990, the highest prevalence and YLD rates were found in the ≥70 years group, while the lowest rates were in the <5 years group. The age group with the most substantial increase in the burden of refractive errors was the 15 to 49 years population, which remained consistent during the three decades. The joinpoint regression analysis results revealed a stage-wise fluctuation in the age-standardized prevalence and YLD rates of refractive errors in China from 1990 to 2019. Specifically, the age-standardized prevalence rate increased by 0.765% from 1990 to 2001, decreased by 0.963% from 2001 to 2014, increased by 4.214% from 2014 to 2017, and decreased by 3.029% from 2017 to 2019. In contrast, the age-standardized YLD rate decreased by 0.113% from 1990 to 1995, increased by 2.252% from 1995 to 2000, decreased by 1.102% from 2000 to 2014, increased by 4.326% from 2014 to 2017, and decreased by 5.090% from 2017 to 2019. Conclusions: The standardized prevalence of refractive errors and the standardized YLD rate in China showed a downward trend, which was less than the global average level, but the disease burden was still heavy. Gender and age emerged as significant influencing factors for the prevalence of refractive errors and YLD. It is imperative to enhance efforts in the prevention and treatment of refractive errors among the middle-aged and elderly population. Attention should also be directed towards the increasing burden in the<50 years population.

Nitrate pollution in groundwater has become a global concern. One of the most important issues in controlling the nitrate pollution of groundwater is to identify the pollution source quickly and accurately. In this review, we firstly summarized the isotopic background values of potential sources of nitrate pollution in groundwater in 17 provinces (cities, autonomous regions) and 29 study areas in China, which could provide the fundamental database for subsequent research. Secondly, we reviewed the research progress of nitrate isotopes combined with multiple tracers for tracing nitrate in groundwater, and discussed their applicable conditions, advantages, and disadvantages. We found that halides and microorganisms combined with nitrate isotopes could accurately trace the pollution sources of domestic sewage, excrement and agricultural activities. The combination of Δ 17 O and nitrate isotopes could effectively distinguish the source of atmospheric deposition of nitrate in groundwater. The combination of groundwater age and nitrate isotopes could further determine the time scale of nitrate pollution. In addition, we summarized the application cases and compared the characteristics of mass balance mixing model, IsoSource model, Bayesian isotope mixing model, and EMMTE model for quantitative identification of nitrate pollution in groundwater. For the complexity and concealment of groundwater pollution sources, the coupling of nitrate isotopes with other chemical and biological tracing methods, as well as the application of nitrate isotope quantitative models, are effective tools for reliably identifying groundwater nitrate sources and transformation processes.

Purpose: Amphotericin B colloidal dispersion (ABCD) is a less toxic formulation of amphotericin B for the treatment of invasive fungal infections. The pharmacokinetic (PK) profile and safety of a generic ABCD were investigated after a single dose (0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg) administered as an intravenous infusion in 30 healthy Chinese subjects., Methods: PK data from healthy Chinese male subjects were applied for developing a population PK model to predict the PK profiles of standard doses (3 or 4 mg/kg) in patients. A 5000-time Monte Carlo simulation of AUC 0-24 /MIC target was implemented to determine the probability of target attainment (PTA) and cumulative fraction of response (CFR) under standard doses., Findings: The PK profiles of intravenous administration of ABCD were best described by a 3-compartmental model with a time-varying clearance and a dose-dependent volume of distribution in the peripheral compartment. PK/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) analysis revealed that 3 or 4 mg/kg ABCD once a day resulted in favorable CRF (>98%) with 2-log reduction of Candida albicans. A high PTA (>90%) was achieved at MIC ≤2 mg/L for the dosing regimen of ABCD 3 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg for MIC ≤4 mg/L., Implications: PK/PD analysis indicated that a favorable efficacy of ABCD could be reached at a dose of 3 or 4 mg/kg once daily for 14 to 28 days to treat invasive fungal infections caused by C albicans. A novel Gram-stain-negative bacterium, designated strain GY 70310 T , was isolated from the intestinal tract of Konosirus punctatus collected from Minjiang River, China. Cells of the strain were rod-shaped and motile with a single polar flagellum. The result of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that strain GY 70310 T was moderately related to Crenobacter luteus YIM 78141 T (94.7%), Paludibacterium paludis KBP-21 T (93.8%) and Crenobacter cavernae K1W11S-77 T (93.0%). The draft genome of strain GY 70310 T consisted of 3.4 Mbp with DNA G+C content of 66.3 mol%, which possessed genes putatively encoding nitrate reductase, nitrite oxidoreductase and urease. The novel strain showed a whole genome average nucleotide identity (OrthoANI) value of 77.1% and a digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of 22.4% with Crenobacter luteus DSM 27258 T , followed by Crenobacter cavernae K1W11S-77 T with OrthoANI and dDDH values of 76.4% and 20.6%, respectively. The major fatty acids (>10%) were identified as summed feature 3 (C 16:1 ω6c and/or iso-C 15:0 2-OH, C 16:1 ω7c), C 16:0 and C 18:1 ω7c. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophospholipid, one unidentified lipid and one unidentified phospholipid. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses, genotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain GY 70310 T represents a novel species of the genus Crenobacter, for which the name Crenobacter intestini sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is GY 70310 T (= CGMCC 1.16821 T  = KCTC 62945 T  = NBRC 113900 T ).

Given the facts that urban land is extremely limited and ecological environment protection is confronted with severe challenges, it is of great importance to effectively construct green infrastructure (GI) network and identify relatively important landscape ecological components. We identified and prioritized GI network centers in Fuzhou downtown area using the MSPA and the landscape connectivity evaluation. The least cost path method and gravity model were used to construct the potential corridors at multiple levels. The density analysis and blind area analysis were used to extract and prioritize the GI nodes and to obtain the optimized GI network. The results showed that the first-level GI network centers were mainly distributed in the north and south of Fuzhou downtown, while those in the central region were small and scattered. The comprehensive resistance of landscape was low in the periphery but high in the middle, with poor integral connectivity. The GI corridor system with existing corridors and potential corridors was employed to enhance the connectivity among network centers. Furthermore, the GI nodes were extracted to provide a "transfer station" for material circulation and energy flow, which could partly solve the problems including excessive substrate resistance and the long connection corridor in some areas. The spatial prioritization of GI elements could make the construction of GI network more scientific and also provide reference for the future planning period and construction timing of GI network in Fuzhou.

Atmospheric ambient gaseous ammonia (NH 3 ), the most abundant alkaline gas, affects public health and climate change through its key role in the formation of secondary aerosols via reactions with acidic gases. Estimation of the contributions of ammonia sources is very challenging in the urban atmosphere. Stable nitrogen isotope ratio (δ 15 N) measurements have shown that urban aerosol NH 4 + and gaseous NH 3 are derived from fossil fuel combustion-related (FF) sources, such as coal combustion, NH 3 slip, and vehicle exhaust, and volatilization-related sources, such as agriculture and urban water volatilization. Biomass burning (BB) sources, especially residential biofuel, can produce vast quantities of NH 3 and other pollutants and may greatly influence air quality and contribute to increased urban NH 3 samples at three urban sites in Central China during autumn and analyzed the major water-soluble ions and δ 2.5 samples at three urban sites in Central China during autumn and analyzed the major water-soluble ions and δ 15 N values of aerosol NH 4 + . The concentrations of NH 4 + increased as the temperature decreased close to winter, whereas the δ 15 N values did not show this pattern. According to the Bayesian model after isotope fractionation correction, FF sources contributed to 56.4 ± 17.1%, 46.4 ± 18.2%, and 51.8 ± 14.9% of aerosol NH 4 + in Nanchang, Wuhan, and Changsha, respectively, throughout autumn. The contributions from BB sources were 34.5 ± 20.4%, 46.4 ± 21.4%, and 40.4 ± 17.4% for Nanchang, Wuhan, and Changsha, respectively. We also found the fraction of aerosol NH 4 + from BB increased in all three cities from September to November 2017, which was likely caused by increased heating demands with the decrease in temperature during the season. Furthermore, BB was responsible for a severe haze event (maximum PM 2.5 of 205.69 μg/m 3 ) in Nanchang. The determination of the spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors of PM 2.5 is of great interest to the atmospheric and climate science community, who aim to understand and better control the atmospheric linkage indicators. However, most previous studies have been conducted on pollution-sensitive cities, and there is a lack of large-scale and long-term systematic analyses. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal evolution of PM 2.5 and its influencing factors by using an exploratory spatiotemporal data analysis (ESTDA) technique and spatial econometric model based on remote sensing imagery inversion data of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), China, between 2000 and 2016. The results showed that 1) the annual value of PM 2.5 was in the range of 23.49-37.67 μg/m 3 with an inverted U-shaped change trend, and the PM 2.5 distribution presented distinct spatial heterogeneity; 2) there was a strong local spatial dependence and dynamic PM 2.5 growth process, and the spatial agglomeration of PM 2.5 exhibited higher path-dependence and spatial locking characteristics; and 3) the endogenous interaction effect of PM 2.5 was significant, where each 1% increase in the neighbouring PM 2.5 levels caused the local PM 2.5 to increase by at least 0.4%. Natural and anthropogenic factors directly and indirectly influenced the PM 2.5 levels. Tetanus consists of neonatal tetanus and non-neonatal tetanus. Non-neonatal tetanus remains a serious public health problem, although neonatal tetanus has been eliminated in China since 2012. Non-neonatal tetanus is a potential fatal disease. In the absence of medical intervention, the mortality rate of severe cases is almost 100 % . Even with vigorous treatment, the mortality rate is still 30 % -50 % globally. These specifications aim to regulate non-neonatal tetanus diagnosis and treatment in China, in order to improve medical quality and safety. These specifications introduce the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and laboratory tests, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, grading and treatment of non-neonatal tetanus.

Purpose: To determine the differences in mean ocular dimensions between urban and rural children and identify possible influencing factors., Methods: This work uses previously published data from the Shandong Children Eye Study, which was based on a random cluster sampling applied to a cross-sectional school-based study design in the rural Guanxian County and Weihai city. All children underwent auto-refractometry and biometry under cycloplegia., Results: The study included 3290 children (aged 9.35 ± 2.93 years), consisting of 888 pairs of boys and 757 pairs of girls matched by sex, age and refractive error (each pair matching one child from urban cohort with one from the rural cohort). Overall urban children were significantly taller and heavier than rural children (t-test; p < 0.001), which was confirmed for all age groups for weight. Urban ocular axial lengths were significantly longer by 0.23 mm compared to the rural population (t-test; p < 0.001), mostly in younger children and boys. Meanwhile, corneal curvatures were flatter in the urban cohort by 0.08 mm (p < 0.001). This association of axial length with urban vs rural region was reduced in magnitude by 69.7% after accounting for height., Conclusions: For the same, matched refractive error, children from urban regions had significantly longer eyes and flatter corneal curvature than rural children. A novel Gram-negative bacterium, non-motile and short rod-shaped, designated strain GY511 T , was isolated from the intestines of fish collected from Maowei Sea, China. Growth occurred at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum 7.0), 4-37 °C (optimum 28 °C) and at 0-2.5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1.0%). The result of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain GY511 T is closely related to O. oryzae NBRC 113109 T (97.6%), O. konkukae DSM 105395 T (97.4%), Ottowia beijingensis CGMCC 1.12324 T (95.9%), Ottowia pentelensis DSM 21699 T (95.2%) and Ottowia thiooxydans DSM 14619 T (95.0%). The DNA-DNA hybridization values of strain GY511 T with O. oryzae NBRC 113109 T and O. konkukae DSM 105395 T were 35.4 ± 3.1% and 26.3 ± 1.8%, respectively. The major fatty acids (> 10%) were identified as summed feature 3 (C 16:1 ω7c and/or C 16:1 ω6c), C 16:0 and summed feature 8 (C 18:1 ω7c and/or C 18:1 ω6c) and the major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and an unidentified phospholipid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 62.9 mol%. Thiosulfate could be utilized as co-substrate for aerobic growth and was oxidised to sulfate. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular data, strain GY511 T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Ottowia, for which the name Ottowia flava sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GY511 T (= NBRC 113500 T  = DSM 107425 T  = CGMCC 1.13650 T ).

Objective: To explore the relationships between trefoil factor 3（TFF3） gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to papillary thyroid carcinoma（PTC） in Han population of northern China. Method: A case-control study was performed in 123 PTC patients and 108 healthy controls. Four SNPs in the TFF3 gene, including rs225361, rs533093, rs9981660 and rs225439, were detected by gene sequencing. Result: Compared with healthy people, there was no significant difference in the genotype frequencies of rs225361, rs9981660, rs533093 and rs225439 alleles in the PTC group（ P >0.05）. The CGTC and CGTT haploids of TFF3 gene were positively correlated with the occurrence of PTC, and CGCC and TGTC haploids were negatively correlated with the occurrence of PTC. TT genotype of rs9981660 had significant differences in the distribution of PTC with and without lymph node metastasis（ P <0.05）. Conclusion: Polymorphisms in 4 SNP loci in the TFF3 gene may be unrelated to the occurrence of PTC. The CGTC, CGTT, CGCC and TGTC haploids in the TFF3 gene might be related to the development of PTC. Objective: To explore the relationship between selenium and the risk for oral cancer. Methods: We performed a case-control study in 325 cases of newly diagnosed primary oral cancer from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University and 650 controls from the same hospital and community. Unconditional logistic regression and stratification analyses were used to explore the association between selenium and oral cancer. Adjusted OR and corresponding 95 %CI were calculated. The analyses on multiple interactions between selenium and smoking or drinking status, and fruit or fish intake frequencies were conducted. Results: The level of serum selenium was 112.42 (80.98-145.06) μg/L in the case group, which was lower than 164.85 (144.44-188.53) μg/L in control group, the difference was statistical significant ( P <0.01). There was a negative correlation between serum selenium level and the risk for oral cancer regardless of smoking and drinking status, and fruits and fish intake frequencies ( P <0.05). There were multiple interactions between serum selenium level and smoking or drinking status, and fruit and fish intakes. Conclusions: The high level of serum selenium is a protective factor for the incidence of oral cancer, and serum selenium has multiple interactions with smoking or drinking status, and fruit and fish intakes. Therefore, reducing tobacco use and alcohol consumption and increasing the intakes of fruit and fish can reduce the risk for oral cancer to some extent.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, catalase- and oxidase-positive, endospore-forming bacterium, designated GY 10110 T , was isolated from mangrove soil collected from Qinzhou, Guangxi province, China. Cells were aerobic, motile with peritrichous flagella and rod-shaped. The strain grew at 15-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at 0-3 %(w/v) NaCl (1 %) and at pH 6.0-9.0 (pH 7.0). The major fatty acids of strain GY 10110 T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid profile comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphoglycolipid, glycolipid, two unidentified aminophospholipids and three unidentified phospholipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain GY 10110 T was closely related to Falsibacillus pallidus CCTCC AB 207188 T (98.0 % sequence similarity) and Bacillus oceanisediminis CGMCC 1.10115 T (96.9 %), respectively. The G+C content of strain GY 10110 T based on the whole genome sequence was 42.3 mol%. The novel strain showed an average nucleotide identity (ANI) value of 77.8 % and a digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of 15.6 % with Falsibacillus pallidus CCTCC AB 207188 T based on draft genome sequences, followed by Bacillus oceanisediminis CGMCC 1.10115 T with ANI and dDDH values of 75.2 and 12.8 %, respectively. The results of the polyphasic taxonomic study, including phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analysis, showed that strain GY 10110 T represents a novel species of the genus Falsibacillus, for which the name Falsibacillus albus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GY 10110 T (=CGMCC 1.13648 T =NBRC 113502 T ).

Objective: To explore the survival factors and construct a prognostic index (PI) for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: From January 2004 to June 2016, a total of 634 patients with pathologically confirmed OSCC were recruited in a hospital of Fujian. The clinical and follow-up data of all the patients with pathologically confirmed OSCC were collected to identify the factors influencing the prognosis of OSCC. All the patients were randomly divided into two groups: modeling group (modeling dataset, n =318) and validation group (validation dataset, n =316). Randomization was carried out by using computer-generated random numbers. In the modeling dataset, survival rates were calculated using Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. Cox regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratio ( HR s) and 95 % confidence intervals ( CI s) of prognosis factors. An PI for OSCC patients prognostic prediction model was developed based on β value of each significant variable obtained from the multivariate Cox regression model. Using the tertile analysis, patients were divided into high-risk group, moderate-risk group, and low-risk group according to the PI, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Harrell's c-statistic (C index) were used to evaluated the model's predictability. Results: Results from the multivariate Cox regression model indicated that aged ≥55 years ( HR =2.22, 95 %CI : 1.45-3.39), poor oral hygiene ( HR =2.12, 95 %CI : 1.27-3.54), first diagnosis of lymph node metastasis ( HR =5.78, 95 %CI : 3.60-9.27), TNM stage Ⅲ-Ⅳ (stage Ⅰ as reference) ( HR =2.43, 95 %CI : 1.10-5.37) and poor differentiation (well differentiation as reference) ( HR =2.53, 95 %CI : 1.60-4.01) were the risk factors influencing the prognosis of OSCC. The PI model had a high predictability in modeling group and validation group (AIC and C index were 1 205.80, 0.700 2 and 1 150.47, 0.737 3). Conclusion: Age, poor oral hygiene, first diagnosis of lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and histological grade were factors associated with the prognosis of OSCC, and the PI model has a certain significance in the clinical treatment of OSCC.

Objective: To understand the genotype distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the drug susceptibility of M . tuberculosis with different genotypes in Changping district of Beijing and evaluate the application of genotyping of M . tuberculosis in local tuberculosis (TB) prevention and control. Methods: A total of 1 099 M . tuberculosis strains isolated in Changping from 2011 to 2015 were used. Spoligotyping and 12-locus VNTR recommended by Gao were used for the genotyping of these isolates. In addition, the susceptibility of the M . tuberculosis isolates to rifampin (RFP), isoniazid (INH), ethambutol (EMB), streptomycin (SM), amikacin (AMK) and ofloxcin (OFX) were detected by using conventional drug susceptibility test. Results: From 2011 to 2015, the detection rate of OFX-resistance increased from 2.9 % to 8.9 % ( P =0.01). Of all the M . tuberculosis isolates, 976 belonged to Beijing genotype (88.8 % ), and the other 123 belonged to non-Beijing genotype (11.2 % ). In addition, there were 189 ancient Beijing genotype isolates and 787 modern Beijing genotype isolates, respectively. The proportion of Beijing genotype strains showed no significant increase in the past five years (81.1 % in 2011 vs. 82.0 % in 2015). On the basis of VTNR genotyping, only 2 isolates belonged to one cluster (0.1 % ). In addition, the AMK resistant rate of Beijing genotype strains (1.7 % ) was significantly lower than that of non-Beijing genotype strains (4.9 % , P =0.02). Compared with modern Beijing genotype strains, the SM resistant rate of ancient Beijing genotype strains was significantly higher (28.0 % vs. 15.7 % , P =0.01). Conclusions: In the past five years, the OFX- resistant rate of M . tuberculosis in Changping was in increase. There was no significant difference in the detection of Beijing genotype strains during this period. In addition, the low clustering rate indicated that the TB transmission rate was low in Changping.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of oral hygiene on risk of oral cancer in non-smoking and non-drinking women. Methods: From September 2010 to February 2016, 242 non-smoking and non-drinking female patients with pathologically confirmed oral cancer were recruited in a hospital of Fuzhou, and another 856 non-smoking and non-drinking healthy women from health examination center in the same hospital were selected as control group. Five oral hygiene related variables including the frequency of teeth brushing, number of teeth lost, poor prosthesis, regular dental visits and recurrent dental ulceration were used to develop oral hygiene index model. Unconditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios ( OR ) and 95% confidence intervals (95 %CI ). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was used to evaluate the predictability of the oral hygiene index model. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between oral hygiene index and the incidence of oral cancer. Results: Teeth brushing <2 twice daily, teeth lost ≥5, poor prosthesis, no regular dental visits, recurrent dental ulceration were risk factors for the incidence of oral cancer in non-smoking and non-drinking women, the corresponding OR (95 %CI ) were 1.50 (1.08-2.09), 1.81 (1.15-2.85), 1.51 (1.03-2.23), 1.73 (1.15-2.59), 7.30 (4.00-13.30), respectively. The AUROC of the oral hygiene index model was 0.705 9, indicating a high predictability. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the oral hygiene index was associated with risk of oral cancer. The higher the score, the higher risk was observed. The corresponding OR (95 %CI ) of oral hygiene index scores (score 1, score 2, score 3, score 4-5) were 2.51 (0.84-7.53), 4.68 (1.59-13.71), 6.47 (2.18-19.25), 15.29 (5.08-45.99), respectively. Conclusion: Oral hygiene could influence the incidence of oral cancer in non-smoking and non-drinking women, and oral hygiene index has a certain significance in assessing the combined effects of oral hygiene.

Objective: To investigate the effects between fish, seafood and pickled food intakes on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: A case-control study was carried out in Fujian area during September 2010 to December 2016, in which 604 newly diagnosed primary OSCC cases confirmed by pathological diagnosis were collected from hospital and 1 343 control subjects were enrolled from community and healthy hospital population. Demographic data, history of smoking drinking and tea drinking, oral hygiene status and dietary behaviors (fish, seafood and pickled food intakes) were collected by in-person interviews using a standard questionnaire.Using unconditional logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios ( ORs ) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals ( CIs ) to assess the effects of fish, seafood and pickled food intakes on OSCC. Analysis stratified by smoking, alcohol drinking and bad prosthesis to explore the possible difference in association between subgroups. Multiplicative interactions and additive interactions between fish and bad prosthesis, seafood and alcohol drinking, pickled food and bad prosthesis were assessed by unconditional logistic regression, relative excess risk due to interaction ( RERI ), attributable proportion due to interaction ( AP ) and synergy index (S). Results: The average age of case group and control group were separately (58.69±13.92) years old and (59.27±11.37) years old (χ(2)=4.75, P= 0.191). The people whose fish and seafood intakes ≥3 times/week had the lower risk of OSCC, the adjusted OR (95 %CI ) values were 0.63 (0.52-0.77) and 0.51 (0.41-0.64); The stratified analysis indicated that the people having bad prosthesis had the lower risk of OSCC if they eating fish ≥3 times/week, and the adjusted OR (95 %CI ) values was 0.53 (0.39-0.71); the people having bad prosthesis had the higher risk of OSCC if they eating pickled food ≥3 times/week, the adjusted OR (95 %CI ) values was 1.37 (1.02-1.88). Regularly eating seafood can decrease the risk of OSCC for non-smokers, smokers, non-drinkers, drinkers, people without bad prosthesis and had bad prosthesis, the adjusted OR (95 %CI ) values were 0.49 (0.36-0.68), 0.52 (0.37-0.73), 0.41 (0.31-0.55), 0.77 (0.51-0.96), 0.49 (0.36-0.67), 0.59 (0.42-0.83). Crossover analysis showed fish and bad prosthesis exist multiplication interaction relationship (adjusted OR= 0.66, 95 %CI: 0.44-0.97) and additional interaction relationship ( RERI =-0.81, 95 %CI: -1.43--0.19; AP= -0.76, 95 %CI: -1.35--0.17; S =0.08, 95 %CI: 0.01-0.98); pickled food and bad prosthesis exist multiplication interaction relationship (adjusted OR= 1.63, 95 %CI: 1.06-2.51) and addition interaction relationship ( RERI =0.65, 95 %CI: 0.08-1.22; AP= 0.36, 95 %CI: 0.10-0.62; S =5.19, 95 %CI: 1.32-54.49). Conclusion: Reducing the consumption of pickled food, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption, and regularly eating fish and seafood can prevent the occurrence of OSCC.

Purpose: To assess whether anterior corneal curvature radius (CCR) is associated with the increased prevalence of myopia in Asia., Methods: The investigation included the adult populations of the Central India Eye and Medical Study (CIEMS; 4711 adults) and Beijing Eye Study (BES; 3468 adults) and the children and teenager populations of the Shandong Children Eye Study (6026 children; age: 9.7 ± 3.3 years; range: 4-18 years) and Beijing Pediatric Eye Study (681 children; age: 7.7 ± 1.6 years; range: 5-13 years)., Results: In both adult study populations, CCR was not significantly (BES: P = 0.60; CIEMS: P = 0.14) associated with the level of education. In highly myopic subgroups, longer CCR was associated with a lower educational level [CIEMS: P = 0.04; standardized regression coefficient β = -0.23; nonstandardized regression coefficient B: -0.06; 95% confidence interval (CI), -0.11 to 0.01] or showed a tendency toward a lower educational level (BES: P = 0.09; β = -0.25; B: -0.06; 95% CI, -0.12 to 0.01). In the young study populations, longer CCR was significantly associated with parameters indicating a lower educational level, such as lower educational level of father (P = 0.001; β: -0.04; B: -0.01; 95% CI, -0.02 to -0.01) and mother (P = 0.0.02; β: -0.14; B: -0.05; 95% CI, -0.09 to -0.01) and more time spent outdoors (P = 0.001; β: 0.15; B: 0.05; 95% CI, 0.02 to 0.07) and less time spent indoors (P < 0.001; β: -0.15; B: -0.04; 95% CI, -0.06 to -0.02). In all study populations, longer CCR was significantly correlated (multivariate analysis) with longer axial length and lower prevalence of high myopia., Conclusions: Adult study populations and schoolchildren populations did not differ in the associations of longer CCR with parameters indicating a lower educational level, longer axial length, and lower prevalence of high myopia. CCR was not useful for the differentiation between high myopia in schoolchildren and high pathological myopia in adults.

Purpose: To describe prevalence and associations of anisometropia in children., Methods: The cross-sectional school-based study included children aged 4 to 18 years., Results: The study included 6025 (94.7%) of 6364 eligible children. Mean refractive anisometropia was 0.37 ± 0.57 diopters (median: 0.25 diopters; range: 0-7.88 diopters; prevalence [≥1 diopter]: 7.0% ± 0.3%). In multivariate analysis (regression coefficient r: 0.66), higher refractive anisometropia was associated with older age (P < 0.001; β: 0.07; B: 0.01; 95% CI: 0.01-0.02), higher maternal education level (P < 0.001; β: 0.04; B: 0.02; 95% CI: 0.01-0.03), more total time spent indoors reading or writing (P = 0.001; β: 0.04; B: 0.01; 95% CI: 0.01-0.02), larger intereye difference in axial length (P < 0.001; β: 0.57; B: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.15-1.24), shorter mean axial length of both eyes (P = 0.03; β: -0.03; B: -0.02; 95% CI: -0.03 to -0.001), larger intereye difference in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (P < 0.001; β: 0.14; B: 1.83; 95% CI: 1.54-2.12), and lower stereoacuity (P < 0.001; β: 0.08; B: 0.31; 95% CI: 0.22-0.39). Refractive anisometropia showed a U-shaped correlation with refractive error. Higher anisomyopia was associated (r: 0.57) with older age (P = 0.001; β: 0.05; B: 0.006; 95% CI: 0.002-0.009), higher level of paternal education (P = 0.001; β: 0.01; B: 0.01; 95% CI: 0.01-0.02), more total time spent indoors reading or writing (P = 0.01; β: 0.03; B: 0.01; 95% CI: 0.00-0.01), larger intereye difference in axial length (P < 0.001; β: 0.22; B: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.23-0.29), greater myopic refractive error (P < 0.001; β: -0.46; B: -0.07; 95% CI: -0.08 to -0.07), and lower corneal astigmatism (P < 0.001; β: -0.10; B: -0.06; 95% CI: -0.08 to -0.05). In the same multivariate model, hyperopic anisometropia was not significantly associated with time spent indoors with reading (P = 0.18). Cylindrical anisometropia (mean: 0.30 ± 0.32 diopters; prevalence [≥1 diopter]: 3.7% ± 0.2%) increased with higher refractive anisometropia (P < 0.001; β: 0.16; B: 0.09; 95% CI: 0.08-0.11), greater myopic refractive error (P < 0.001; β: -0.06; B: -0.01; 95% CI: -0.01 to -0.01), higher corneal astigmatism (P < 0.001; β: -0.22; B: -0.15; 95% CI: -0.17 to -0.13), and lower mean BCVA (P < 0.001; β: 0.11; B: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.68-1.17)., Conclusions: In 4- to 18-year-old children, refractive anisometropia and anisomyopia increased with systemic parameters such as age, parental education level, and lifestyle of the children, for example, more time spent indoors reading or writing. In contrast, hyperopic anisometropia and cylindrical anisometropia were not related with lifestyle parameters.

Purpose: To examine the thickness of the macular choroid and its associations in school children aged 6 to 18 years., Methods: The school-based cross-sectional Shandong Children Eye Study included 6026 (94.7%) of 6364 eligible children fulfilling the inclusion criterion of an age from 4 to 18 years. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed for a subgroup of 972 school children aged 6+ years. All participants underwent ocular examinations, including measurement of visual acuity, cycloplegic refractometry, biometry, and SD-OCT (enhanced depth imaging mode) for measurement of choroidal thickness., Results: The study included 972 children (501 girls) with a mean age of 11.3 ± 3.3 years (range, 6-18 years) and mean axial length of 24.10 ± 1.56 mm (range, 16.57-28.82 mm). Mean choroidal thickness was thicker (P < 0.001) at 500 μm temporal to the foveola (290 ± 67 μm) than in the subfoveal region (283 ± 67 μm; range, 113-507 μm) and the region 500 μm superior to the fovea (283 ± 66 μm), where it was thicker (P < 0.001) than at 500 μm inferior of the foveola (281 ± 66 μm), and it was thinnest (P < 0.001) at 500 μm nasal of the foveola (268 ± 67 μm). In multivariate analysis, thicker SFCT was (overall correlation coefficient r: 0.51) associated with shorter axial length (P < 0.001; standardized correlation coefficient β: -0.48; B: -23.7; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -27.2 to -20.3), male sex (P = 0.006; β: -0.08; B: -10.7; 95% CI: -18.3 to -3.11), and younger age (P = 0.04; β: -0.07; B: -1.46; 95% CI: -2.85 to -0.07)., Conclusions: As in adults, thicker SFCT in children and teenagers was markedly associated with shorter axial length, and to a lesser degree with male sex and older age. As in adults, increasing axial myopia in teenagers is associated with choroidal thinning and development of a leptochoroid.

Purpose: To investigate the distribution of the (CCR) and its associated factors in children., Methods: Using a random cluster sampling method, the school-based, cross-sectional Shandong Children Eye Study included children aged 4 to 18 years from the rural county of Guanxian and the city of Weihai in the province of Shandong in East China. CCR was measured by ocular biometry., Results: CCR measurements were available for 5913 (92.9%) out of 6364 eligible children. Mean age was 10.0±3.3 years, and mean CCR was 7.84±0.27 mm (range: 6.98 to 9.35 mm). In multivariate linear regression analysis, longer CCR (i.e. flatter cornea) was significantly associated with the systemic parameters of male sex (P<0001; standardized regression coefficient beta: -0.08; regression coefficient B: -0.04; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): -0.05, -0.03), younger age (P<0.001; beta: -0.37; B: -0.03; 95%CI: -0.04, -0.03), taller body height (P = 0.002; beta: 0.06; B: 0.001; 95%CI: 0.000, 0.001), lower level of education of the father (P = 0.001; beta: -0.04; B: -0.01; 95%CI: -0.02, -0.01) and maternal myopia (P<0.001; beta: -0.07; B: -0.04; 95%CI: -0.06, -0.03), and with the ocular parameters of longer ocular axial length (P<0.001; beta: 0.59; B: 0.13; 95%CI: 0.12, 0.14), larger horizontal corneal diameter (P<0.001; beta: 0.19; B: 0.13; 95%CI: 0.11, 0.14), and smaller amount of cylindrical refractive error (P = 0.001; beta: -0.09; B: -0.05; 95%CI: -0.06, -0.04)., Conclusions: Longer CCR (i.e., flatter corneas) (mean:7.84±0.27 mm) was correlated with male sex, younger age, taller body height, lower paternal educational level, maternal myopia, longer axial length, larger corneas (i.e., longer horizontal corneal diameter), and smaller amount of cylindrical refractive error. These findings may be of interest for elucidation of the process of emmetropization and myopization and for corneal refractive surgery.

Purpose: To determine the effect of 1% cyclopentolate on the refractive status of children aged 4 to 18 years., Methods: Using a random cluster sampling in a cross-sectional school-based study design, children with an age of 4-18 years were selected from kindergardens, primary schools, junior and senior high schools in a rural county and a city. Auto-refractometry was performed before and after inducing cycloplegia which was achieved by 1% cyclopentolate eye drops., Results: Out of 6364 eligible children, data of 5999 (94.3%) children were included in the statistical analysis. Mean age was 10.0±3.3 years (range: 4-18 years). Mean difference between cycloplegic and non-cycloplegic refractive error (DIFF) was 0.78±0.79D (median: 0.50D; range: -1.00D to +10.75D). In univariate analysis, DIFF decreased significantly with older age (P<0.001;correlation coefficient r:-0.24), more hyperopic non-cycloplegic refractive error (P<0.001;r = 0.13) and more hyperopic cycloplegic refractive error (P<0.001;r = 0.49). In multivariate analysis, higher DIFF was associated with higher cycloplegic refractive error (P<0.001; standardized regression coefficient beta:0.50; regression coefficient B: 0.19; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18, 0.20), followed by lower intraocular pressure (P<0.001; beta: -0.06; B: -0.02; 95%CI: -0.03, -0.01), rural region of habitation (P = 0.001; beta: -0.04; B: -0.07; 95%CI: -0.11, -0.03), and, to a minor degree, with age (P = 0.006; beta: 0.04; B: 0.009; 95%CI: 0.003, 0.016). 66.4% of all eyes with non-cycloplegic myopia (≤-0.50D) remained myopic after cycloplegia while the remaining 33.6% of eyes became emmetropic (18.0%) or hyperopic (15.7%) under cycloplegia. Prevalence of emmetropia decreased from 37.5% before cycloplegia to 19.8% after cycloplegia while the remaining eyes became hyperopic under cycloplegia., Conclusions: The error committed by using non-cycloplegic versus cycloplegic refractometry in children with mid to dark-brown iris color decreased with older age, and in parallel manner, with more myopic cycloplegic refractive error. Non-cycloplegic refractometric measures lead to a misclassification of refractive error in a significant proportion of children.

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of levofloxacin 750 mg for 5 days versus 500 mg for 7-14 days intravenous (IV) in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This clinical trial was the first of its kind conducted in Chinese people and also in Asian population. A total of 241 were enrolled and randomized to 750 mg group (n = 121) or 500 mg (n = 120) group from 10 study centers. The median treatment duration was 5.0 days in 750 mg and 9.0 days in 500 mg group. The median total dose was 3750 mg in 750 mg and 4500 mg in 500 mg group. The bacterial eradication rate was 100% in both groups. The overall efficacy rate in 750 mg group was 86.2% (94/109), and 84.7% (94/111), in 500 mg group of full analysis set visit 4, 95% confidence interval of 1.6% (-7.8-10.9%); the statistical results showed that 750 mg group was non-inferior to 500 mg group. The most common clinical adverse drug reactions were injection site adverse reactions in both 750 mg group and 500 mg group; the other common adverse drug reactions were insomnia, nausea, skin rash, etc. The most common drug-related laboratory abnormalities were neutrophil percentage decreased, decreased white blood cell count, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase elevation in both 750 mg group and 500 mg group. Most of adverse drug reactions were mild in severity and well-tolerated. In summary, the regimen of levofloxacin 750 mg IV for 5 days was at least as effective and well tolerated as 500 mg IV for 7-14 days for the treatment of CAP., (Copyright © 2014. Purpose: We examined the distribution of intraocular pressure (IOP) and its associated factors in children., Methods: Using a random cluster sampling from kindergartens, primary schools, and junior and senior high schools from rural Guanxian County and the city of Weihai, the school-based cross-sectional Shandong Children Eye Study included children aged 4 to 18 years. All participants underwent an ocular examination, including ocular biometry, cycloplegic refractometry, and noncontact tonometry., Results: Mean IOP was 17.6 ± 2.7 mm Hg (range, 10-28 mm Hg). The IOP increased up to an age of 10 years and subsequently decreased with older age. In multivariate regression analysis, higher IOP was associated with female sex (P < 0.001; standardized correlation coefficient β, 0.06; regression coefficient β, 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.18, 0.50), higher body mass index (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient β, 0.09; regression coefficient β, 0.07; 95% CI, 0.04,0.09), younger age (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient β, -0.15; regression coefficient β, -0.13; 95% CI, -0.17,-0.10), maternal myopia (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient β, 0.05; regression coefficient β, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.15,0.53), and more time spent indoors with reading/writing (P = 0.002; correlation coefficient β, 0.05; regression coefficient β, 0.07; 95% CI, 0.03,0.11), and with the ocular parameters of longer axial length (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient β, 0.14; regression coefficient β, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.21,0.37) and smaller corneal horizontal diameter (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient β, -0.06; regression coefficient β, -0.31; 95% CI, -0.46,-0.15)., Conclusions: In children aged 4 to 18 years, IOP showed an M-shaped association with age. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether risk of gastric cancer (GC) was associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a gene cluster on the chromosome 17q12-q21 (ERBB2 amplicon) in the Chinese Han population. We detected twenty-six SNPs in this gene cluster containing steroidogenic acute regulatory-related lipid transfer domain containing 3 (STARD3), protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 1B (PPP1R1B/DARPP32), titin-cap (TCAP), per1-like domain containing 1(PERLD1/CAB2), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (ERBB2/HER2), zinc-finger protein subfamily 1A 3 (ZNFN1A3/IKZF3) and DNA topoisomerase 2-alpha (TOP2A) genes in 311 patients with GC and in 425 controls by Sequenom. We found no associations between genetic variations and GC risk. However, haplotype analysis implied that the haplotype CCCT of STARD3 (rs9972882, rs881844, rs11869286 and rs1877031) conferred a protective effect on the susceptibility to GC (P=0.043, odds ratio [OR]=0.805, 95% confidence intervals [95% CI]=0.643-0.992). The STARD3 rs1877031 TC genotype endued histogenesis of gastric mucinous adenocarcinoma and signet-ring cell carcinoma (P=0.021, OR=2.882, 95% CI=1.173-7.084). We examined the expression of STARD3 in 243 tumor tissues out of the 311 GC patients and 20 adjacent normal gastric tissues using immumohistochemical (IHC) analysis and tissue microarrays (TMA). The expression of STARD3 was observed in the gastric parietal cells and in gastric tumor tissues and significantly correlated with gender (P=0.004), alcohol drinking (P<0.001), tumor location (P=0.007), histological type (P=0.005) and differentiation (P=0.023) in GC. We concluded that the combined effect of haplotype CCCT of STARD3 might affect GC susceptibility. Purpose: To examine the prevalence of refractive errors and prevalence and causes of vision loss among preschool and school children in East China., Methods: Using a random cluster sampling in a cross-sectional school-based study design, children with an age of 4-18 years were selected from kindergartens, primary schools, and junior and senior high schools in the rural Guanxian County and the city of Weihai. All children underwent a complete ocular examination including measurement of uncorrected (UCVA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and auto-refractometry under cycloplegia. Myopia was defined as refractive error of ≤-0.5 diopters (D), high myopia as ≤ -6.0D, and amblyopia as BCVA ≤ 20/32 without any obvious reason for vision reduction and with strabismus or refractive errors as potential reasons., Results: Out of 6364 eligible children, 6026 (94.7%) children participated. Prevalence of myopia (overall: 36.9 ± 0.6%;95% confidence interval (CI):36.0,38.0) increased (P<0.001) from 1.7 ± 1.2% (95%CI:0.0,4.0) in the 4-years olds to 84.6 ± 3.2% (95%CI:78.0,91.0) in 17-years olds. Myopia was associated with older age (OR:1.56;95%CI:1.52,1.60;P<0.001), female gender (OR:1.22;95%CI:1.08,1.39;P = 0.002) and urban region (OR:2.88;95%CI:2.53,3.29;P<0.001). Prevalence of high myopia (2.0 ± 0.2%) increased from 0.7 ± 0.3% (95%CI:0.1,1.3) in 10-years olds to 13.9 ± 3.0 (95%CI:7.8,19.9) in 17-years olds. It was associated with older age (OR:1.50;95%CI:1.41,1.60;P<0.001) and urban region (OR:3.11;95%CI:2.08,4.66);P<0.001). Astigmatism (≥ 0.75D) (36.3 ± 0.6%;95%CI:35.0,38.0) was associated with older age (P<0.001;OR:1.06;95%CI:1.04,1.09), more myopic refractive error (P<0.001;OR:0.94;95%CI:0.91,0.97) and urban region (P<0.001;OR:1.47;95%CI:1.31,1.64). BCVA was ≤ 20/40 in the better eye in 19 (0.32%) children. UCVA ≤ 20/40 in at least one eye was found in 2046 (34.05%) children, with undercorrected refractive error as cause in 1975 (32.9%) children. Amblyopia (BCVA ≤ 20/32) was detected in 44 (0.7%) children (11 children with bilateral amblyopia)., Conclusions: In coastal East China, about 14% of the 17-years olds were highly myopic, and 80% were myopic. Prevalence of myopia increased with older age, female gender and urban region. About 0.7% of pre-school children and school children were amblyopic.

Objective: To analyze the incidence and mortality of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer in cancer-registration areas of China in 2009., Methods: We collected data about incidence of oral cavity and pharyngeal from 72 cancer registry sites of National Central Registry Database in 2009, covering 85 470 522 person (57 489 009 were from urban areas, 27 981 513 were from rural areas).Incidence and mortality rates, proportions, cumulative rate (0-74 years old), cut rate (35-64 years old), age-specific rate were then calculated and analyzed respectively. The age-standardized rate was calculated and adjusted by the Chinese standard population in 1982 as well as the Segi's world standard population., Results: There were 2803 new diagnosed oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer cases, 1793 male and 1010 female, with the sex ratio at 1.78: 1. The crude incidence rate of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer was 3.28/100 000(2803/85 470 522). The crude incidence rate of males was 4.15/100 000(1793/43 231 554) while it was 2.39/100 000(1010/42 238 968) among females. The age-standardized incidence rates by Chinese standard population (ASIRC) and the world standard population were 1.72/100 000 and 2.23/100 000 respectively, and the cumulative rate and cut rate was separately 0.26% and 4.02/100 000. The crude incidence and ASIRC of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers were 3.87/100 000 (2225/57 489 009) and 1.97/100 000 in urban areas, whereas in rural areas, they were 2.07/100 000(578/27 981 513) and 1.17/100 000. There were 1172 death cases, including 825 males and 347 females. The crude mortality rate was 1.37/100 000 (1172/85 470 522), while it was 1.91/100 000(825/43 231 554) among males and 0.82/100 000(347/42 238 968) among females. The age-standardized incidence rates were 0.64/100 000 and 0.88/100 000 respectively, by Chinese standard population (ASMRC) and the world standard population. The cumulative mortality rate (0-74 age years old) and cut rate were separately 0.10% and 1.34/100 000. The mortality and ASMRC were 1.59/100 000(915/57 489 009) and 0.72/100 000 in urban areas, whereas in rural areas, they were 0.92/100 000(257/27 981 513) and 0.48/100 000 respectively., Conclusions: Both the incidence and mortality of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer in China were still low in 2009.

Unlabelled: X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (X-SCID) is a rare, life-threatening immune disorder, caused by mutations of the gene for the γ-chain (γc) of the interleukin-2 receptor, IL2RG. We analyzed the clinical, immunologic, and molecular characteristics of children with X-SCID, attempting to improve the diagnosis and treatment of X-SCID in China., Methods: X-SCID was suspected in male infants with recurrent or persistent infections. Eleven male infants from ten unrelated Chinese families were included. The IL2RG gene was amplified and sequenced, followed by mutation analysis in these children and their female relatives. X-linked short tandem repeat (X-STR) typing was done to define the maternal lymphocyte engraftment., Results: The 11 children exhibited recurrent infections and 10 of them had lymphopenia. B cells were present in all patients, T cells were markedly reduced in 10, and NK cells were markedly reduced in 9. Nine IL2RG gene mutations were identified in the 11 children, with 5 novel mutations. One patient was found to have the maternal lymphocyte engraftment., Conclusion: The clinical presentations and immunologic characteristics of the X-SCID patients were accordingly quite uniform despite the heterogeneity of mutations locating almost in the entire γc gene.

Purpose: This study investigated the allelic frequency of 4 short terminal repeats (STRs) in Han and She populations from eastern China., Methods: DNA samples from Han (N = 110) and She (N = 110) healthy subjects were amplified using PCR and primers specific for the STRs. D21S11 and D21S1446 (chromosome 21) and D18S865 and D18S535 (chromosome 18). The frequency and homozygocity of different STRs were evaluated., Results: For both populations, D21S11 and D18S535 were more polymorphic than D21S1446 and D18S865, and the D21S1446 1 allele was very common (48.6% and 55.0% for the Han and She groups, respectively).The Han and She groups significantly differed from one another in respect to the distribution of D21S11, D18S865, and D18S535 allelic frequency (all P -values ≤ 0.48) but had a similar allelic distribution for D21S1446 (P = 0.106). D21S1446 was found to be homozygous about 50% of the time which was significantly greater compared to the other STRs analyzed., Conclusion: This study found that the Han and She differ genetically at 3 autosomal STRs located on chromosome 18 and 21. The STR D21S1146 was often homozygous within these groups, indicating it would be poor marker for analyzing trisomy within these populations.

To reveal the genomic sequence characteristics of coxsackievirus A16 (CoxA16) strain isolated from patients with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Henan province. A total of 406 samples were detected by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and cell-culture-based isolation of coxsackievirus A16. The whole genome of CoxA16 isolate was amplified using 10 pairs of primers, the sequences were analyzed and phylogenetic tree was generated by bioinformatics software. The full length of HN1162/HN/CHN/2010 genome was 7411bp. Compared with the other CoxA16 strains released in GenBank, the nucleotide similarities were 87.0-97.9%, 77.0%-95.4%, 80.3%-96.9%, 77.9% 96.2%, 80.5-100% in 5'UTR, P1, P2, P3, 3'UTR region, respectively; The similarities of nucleotide and amino acid sequences in VP1 region were 91.4%-96.4% and 99.3%-99.7%, respectively. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that CoxA16 strains isolated from Henan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Fujian belonged to the same cluster. The newly isolated CoxA16 from Henan province belonged to subgenotype C2/B-2. These results will have great significance in monitoring CoxA16 and for prevention and control of hand-foot-mouth disease.

In this randomised, double-blind, comparator-controlled, multicentre study conducted in China, 142 hospitalised patients aged 18-75 years with pneumonia (n=80) or complicated skin and soft-tissue infection (cSSTI) (n=62) due to suspected or known Gram-positive pathogens were randomised (1:1) to receive either linezolid 600mg (n=71) or vancomycin 1g in patients aged < or =60 years or 0.75g in patients aged >60 years (n=71) intravenously every 12h. The duration of treatment was 10-21 days for patients with pneumonia and 7-21 days for patients with cSSTI. Clinical outcomes were assessed at end-of-treatment (EOT) visit and follow-up (FU) visit 7-28 days post therapy. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen at baseline and most of these isolates were resistant to meticillin. All isolates were susceptible to linezolid and vancomycin. For the evaluable patients, the effective treatment rate for linezolid was higher than that for vancomycin at EOT (86.9% (53/61) vs. 61.7% (37/60)) and at FU (83.1% (49/59) vs. 64.9% (37/57)). Pathogen eradication rates for the microbiologically evaluable patients at FU were 79.2% (42/53) for linezolid and 61.5% (32/52) for vancomycin. The incidence of drug-related adverse events (AEs) was 25.4% (18/71) for linezolid and 16.9% (12/71) for vancomycin. Four (5.6%) linezolid-treated and eight (11.3%) vancomycin-treated patients discontinued the study drug because of an AE. Linezolid was well tolerated and effective for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive pathogens, including meticillin-resistant S. aureus.

Actinomycete strain H9T was isolated from coastal sediment of the Jiao-Dong peninsula (near Tsingdao city) in China, and was identified by means of polyphasic taxonomy. The strain grew autotrophically on modified nitrifying medium and heterotrophically on Luria-Bertani medium, with NaCl ranging from 0 to 8% (w/v) (optimal growth at 3.5%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of strain H9T to members of the genus Pseudonocardia ranged from 93.0 to 97.5%, indicating that strain H9T was phylogenetically related to members of the genus Pseudonocardia. Strain H9T had type IV cell wall and type PIII phospholipid, and its major menaquinone was MK-8 (H4). DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain H9T and Pseudonocardia kongjuensis, Pseudonocardia autotrophica and Pseudonocardia compacta were 42, 13 and 11%, respectively. These results support the conclusion that H9T represents a novel species within the genus Pseudonocardia, for which the name Pseudonocardia ammonioxydans sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain H9T (= CGMCC 4.1877T = JCM 12462T).

Aim: To construct the full length cDNA library of the peripheral blood lymphocytes in Tibetans and to identify the quality of the library., Methods: The lymphocytes were separated from healthy Tibetan fresh blood, and total RNA was extracted. The full length cDNA library was constructed by SMART (switching mechanism at 5' end of RNA transcript) technique. The unamplified library was titered, and the percentage of recombinant clones were determined. The library was amplified, and the size of the inserts was identified by PCR., Results: The titer of the constructed cDNA library was 1.8x10(9) pfu/L with the percentage of recombinant clones above 98%, and that of the amplified library was 8x10(12) pfu/L. The insert's size ranged from 0.75 to 2.0 kb with the average length of 1.35 kb., Conclusion: The constructed cDNA library of peripheral blood lymphocytes of Tibetans has excellent quality, and it lays a solid founclation for further screening and cloning hypoxia-related genes of Tibetans living at high altitudes.

Objective: To investigate the FCGR3B gene frequencies and FCGR3 variants in a Chinese population from Zhejiang Province., Methods: DNA was extracted from the blood specimens of 487 healthy blood donors from Zhejiang Province. The FCGR3B gene frequencies were determined by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP). The 19 specimens with 3 different FCGR3B genotypes underwent FCGR3 gene cloning and sequencing., Results: The gene frequencies of FCGR3B(*1), FCGR3B(*2), and FCGR3B(*3) in these 487 individuals were 0.564, 0.429, and 0.000 respectively. The genotype frequency of FCGR3B(null) was 0.62% (3/487). Sequencing of FCGR3 revealed that in 7 out of the 19 Chinese individuals variants caused by single nucleotide exchanges at one or more of the polymorphic positions 141, 147, 227, 266 and 277 in exon 3 also existed in this Chinese population., Conclusion: FCGR3B(*1) gene is more frequent in a Chinese population from Zhejiang Province than the FCGR3B(*2) gene, and the FCGR3B(*3) gene seems to be absent. Gene variants caused by single nucleotide exchanges are found in addition to the well known forms, but the reason for this remains unclear.

Subjects, Material and Methods: According to a randomized two-period crossover design, 12 Chinese male volunteers were treated with 2 sertraline tablet formulations, one was made in China as test tablet, the other was made in England as reference tablet. Each volunteer received each sertraline in a single dose of 150 mg. The 2 medications were carried out by a wash-out phase of 23 days. Blood samples were obtained just before dosing and at 10 time points until 96 hours after administration, and plasma sertraline concentrations were determined by a sensitive gas-chromagraphy electron-capture method with a lower limit of quantification of 0.625 ng/ml. The bioequivalence of 2 formulations was evaluated by the shortest 90% confidence interval method which corresponds to the two one-sided test method., Results: The point estimate (90% confidence interval) of the mean ratio (test/reference) for AUC(0-96) was 97.19% (82.66% to 122.33%), for Cmax 96.27% (83.64% to 121.36%), and for t(l/2) 96.31% (85.43% to 119.57%). Regarding Tmax (test-reference), the 90% confidence interval ranged from -4 to +4 hours, but the difference between the Tmax values of 2 products is clinically of minor importance., Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that 2 sertraline tablet formulations are bioequivalent. administration, sertraline is slowly absorbed with peak plasma concentrations at 6 - 8 h, and has a terminal elimination half-life of approximately 26 h, indicating once-daily dosing is available. Clinically, it can be taken either in the morning or in the evening, with or without food [Ronfeld et al. 1997b]. In addition, it also exhibits higher plasma protein binding up to 97% and extensive first-pass metabolism. By demethylation, sertraline is metabolized primarily to N-demethylsertraline, and then eliminated by hydroxylation arid conjugation [Tremaine et al. 1989]. This study aimed at assessing of bioequivalence of two sertraline formulations (produced in China and England, respectively) in healthy male volunteers after a single dose administration.
