Background: China experienced an overwhelming COVID-19 pandemic from middle December 2022 to middle January 2023 after lifting the zero-COVID-19 policy on December 7, 2022. However, the infection rate was less studied. We aimed to investigate the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate in children shortly after discontinuation of the zero-COVID-19 policy. Methods: From February 20 to April 10, 2023, we included 393 children aged 8 months to less than 3 years who did not receive COVID-19 vaccination and 114 children aged 3 to 6 years who received inactivated COVID-19 vaccines based on the convenience sampling in this cross-sectional study. IgG and IgM antibodies against nucleocapsid (N) and subunit 1 of spike (S1) of SARS-CoV-2 (anti-N/S1) were measured with commercial kits (Shenzhen YHLO Biotech, China). Results: Of the 393 unvaccinated children (1.5 ± 0.6 years; 52.2% boys), 369 (93.9%) were anti-N/S1 IgG positive. Of the 114 vaccinated children (5.3 ± 0.9 years; 48.2% boys), 112 (98.2%) were anti-N/S1 IgG positive. None of the unvaccinated or vaccinated children was anti-N/S1 IgM positive. The median IgG antibody titers in vaccinated children (344.91 AU/mL) were significantly higher than that in unvaccinated children (42.80 AU/mL) (P < 0.0001). The positive rates and titers of anti-N/S1 IgG had no significant difference between boys and girls respectively. Conclusion: Vast majority of children were infected with SARS-CoV-2 shortly after ending zero-COVID-19 policy in China. Simple Summary: Two fruit fossil species of Ceratophyllum L. are discovered from South China, namely C. cf. muricatum Chamisso from the upper Eocene of the Maoming Basin, Guangdong, and C. demersum L. from the Miocene of the Guiping Basin, Guangxi. Our findings provide evidence for the distribution of Ceratophyllum in South China in the late Eocene, and its wide expansion in subtropical China during the Miocene. Ceratophyllum L. is a cosmopolitan genus of perennial aquatic herbs that occur in quiet freshwaters. Fossils of this genus have been widely reported from the Northern Hemisphere, most of them occurring in the temperate zone. Here, we describe two species of fossil fruits discovered from subtropical areas of China. The fossil fruit discovered from the upper Eocene Huangniuling Formation of the Maoming Basin is designated as C. cf. muricatum Chamisso, and fruits discovered from the Miocene Erzitang Formation of the Guiping Basin are assigned to the extant species C. demersum L. The discovery of these two fossil species indicates that Ceratophyllum had spread to South China by the late Eocene and their distribution expanded in subtropical China during the Miocene. In precision agriculture, suitable soil moisture and nutrient levels are important for crop production. Therefore, studying the spatial variability in soil moisture and nutrient, and their impact on crop yield is essential. In this study, spatial variability in soil mechanical composition, bulk density, water content and nutrient content in north China along with its impact on crop yield is investigated. Results show that soil mechanical composition and bulk density respectively exhibited moderate and weak spatial variation at the 0–80 cm soil depth. Soil moisture and NH4+-N contents at the 0–80 cm soil depth showed moderate spatial variation, while soil NO3−-N content showed a moderate spatial variation from the seedling stage to the filling stage and a strong spatial variation from the milk-riping stage to the maturing stage. The maximum attainable yield was achieved under the optimum soil moisture, NH4+-N, or NO3−-N contents for the whole growth period and each growth stage. At high soil water condition, both soil NH4+-N and NO3−-N contents were found to be significantly different between the high and low yield areas, while at low soil water condition, only soil NO3−-N content affected the crop yield significantly. At either low or high soil NO3−-N level, soil NH4+-N content in high-producing areas was significantly lower than that in low-producing areas. Excess fertilization was found in the experimental area. The two recently collected mammalian dentary fragments from the Eocene Youganwo Formation of Guangdong Province, southern China, are referred to the anthracotheriid species Anthracokeryx naduongensis based on phylogenetic analysis and size comparison. One of these specimens (SYSU-M-1) is the first mammal fossil described from the Youganwo Formation. It was attributed previously to the perissodactyl genus Lunania. Anthracokeryx naduongensis was described originally from the lower upper Eocene Na Duong Formation in Northern Vietnam. The second record of this species supports a basal upper Eocene correlation for the Youganwo Formation, which was estimated previously as middle or late Eocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cadurcodon maomingensissp. nov. is described based on a partial skull and associated vertebrae from the middle–upper Eocene Youganwo Formation in the Maoming Basin, Guangdong Province, China. The taxonomy ofCadurcodonKretzoi, 1942 ( =SianodonXu, 1965, syn. nov.; =ParacadurcodonXu, 1966, syn. nov.) is revised, and a new diagnosis of the genus is provided. It includes six species:C. ardynensis(Osborn, 1923),C. kazakademiusBiryukov, 1961,C. bahoensis(Xu, 1965) comb. nov.,C. suhaituensis(Xu, 1966) comb. nov.,C. houldjinensisB.-Y. A new phylogenetic hypothesis of Amynodontidae is based on the cladistic analysis of the distribution of 48 characters in 16 amynodontid taxa. The family is divided into two sister taxa, Metamynodontini (Paramynodon,MegalamynodonandMetamynodon) and Cadurcodontini (Procadurcodon,Zaisanamynodon,CadurcodonandCadurcotherium). The remaining amynodontid genera are consideredincertae sedis. The evolution of amynodontids was confined mainly to Central and East Asia, with four dispersal events to North America (Amynodon,Amynodontopsis, Metamynodontini andProcadurcodon), and one to Europe and South Asia (Cadurcotherium). The holotype ofC. maomingensissp. nov. is an adult male with body mass estimated as 1.4 tons. Extant Asplenium is one of the most widespread fern groups and occurs in the temperate and tropical regions. However, the fossil records of this genus are poorly documented, especially in the low latitudes. Here, a new species, Asplenium sanshuiense sp. nov. is described from the early Eocene of Sanshui Basin, Guangdong Province, South China. This is the lowest modern latitude fossil record of Asplenium and the first fossil assignment of A. section Darea (Jussieu) Bak., as well as the first fossil record of Asplenium reported from South China. This new species shows that Asplenium had already spread into South China by the early Eocene and the section Darea (Jussieu) Bak. was identifiable within the genus Asplenium during that time. As a traditional Chinese medicine, Naoxintong capsule (NXT) has been approved by China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), which is used for cardiocerebrovascular disease treatment. Here we found that NXT extract significantly promoted H9c2 cardiomyocyte cell autophagy involved in increased autophagy-associated gene expression leading to inhibition of mTOR signaling. Moreover, NXT extract increased PPARγ protein expression and transcription activity of H9c2 cell. Consistent with this, in PPARγ gene silenced H9c2 cells, NXT had no effect on autophagy and mTOR signaling. Furthermore, NXT/PPARγ-mediated H9c2 autophagy led to inhibition of cardiomyocyte cell hypertrophy. Machilus maomingensis Jin et Tang, sp. nov. from the Eocene Youganwo Formation of the Maoming Basin, South China, is studied in detail from the perspective of the leaf architecture and the excellently preserved cuticle. The leaf margin is entire, the primary venation is pinnate; 6 to 8 secondary veins are present and the major secondary venation is eucamptodromous. Stomata are paracytic and occur on the lower epidermis. Trichome bases are unicellular. Oil cells are present in the upper epidermis. The new fossil species described has features of the Lauraceae, particularly of the extant genus Machilus Rumphius ex Nees, and it is most similar to Machilus chinensis (Bentham) Hemsley, an extant species distributed in southern China and Vietnam. Hence, Machilus maomingensis sp. nov. is inferred to live in a warm and humid climate. The discovery of the present fossil indicates that Machilus has existed in South China from at least the Eocene. The genus Paliurus is characterized by its distinctive orbicular-winged fruits and a trilocular (or bilocular) ovary. Macrofossil records suggested this genus was distributed widely in North America, Europe, and Asia during the Paleogene and Neogene, before its present limitation to Eurasia. In this study, we describe some Paliurus fossil winged fruits from the lower part of Youganwo Formation (middle Eocene) and Huangniuling Formation (late Eocene) of the Maoming Basin, South China. These fruits are recognized as Paliurus favonii Unger based on a detailed study on the fossil morphology and cuticle characteristics. This represents the earliest occurrence of Paliurus fossil fruits in eastern Asia, and to date is the world's lowest latitude appearance for this genus. The most ancient records of Paliurus throughout the world are from the middle Eocene of North America and the late Eocene of Japan, leading some researchers to conclude the Paliurus may have originated in North America. Premise of research. Petrified wood has never been described from the Miocene of South China, and the Miocene flora from this region is also poorly known. The fabaceous fossil wood introduced in this article not only contributes to the scant knowledge of petrified woods in South China but also provides significant fossil evidence to study the Miocene floristic diversity in the modern tropical area of China. Methodology. Anatomically preserved petrified woods collected from the Early-Middle Miocene of Jialai-Nanbao Basin, Hainan Island, were sectioned in accordance with standard methods of cutting, grinding, and polishing. We determined their taxonomic positions based on comparative work in anatomy with similar extant and fossil wood slides. Pivotal results. Woods in two different degrees of fossilization represent the same species and correspond closely to wood structure of modern genera Afzelia and Intsia and their fossil counterparts Pahudioxylon. The wood is recognized as Pahudioxylon bankurensis Chowdhury, Ghosh, et Kazmi, which had been reported from the Neogene of India. Six species of Pahudioxylon (P. sahnii Ghosh et Kazmi, P. deomaliense Prakash, P. welkitii Lemoigne et Beauchamp, P. assamicum Prakash et Tripathi, P. indicum Prakash, and P. bengalensis Ghosh et Roy) have been reconsidered as its synonyms. Conclusions. This studied Pahudioxylon species represents the first occurrence of this genus in China as well as rarely reported Miocene plant megafossils in South China. Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the effects of genetic polymorphisms (CYP1B1*2 G355T, CYP1B1*3 C4326G, and CYP2E1*5 G-1293C) and environmental factors (smoking and drinking) on susceptibility to laryngeal cancer in a Han Chinese study group. Methods: This case-control study included 552 Han Chinese patients diagnosed with laryngeal cancer and 666 healthy control subjects of the same ethnicity, similar age, and gender. Genetic polymorphisms were examined using multi-PCR and Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF MS) methodology. The association of these genetic and environmental factors with susceptibility to laryngeal cancer was evaluated using a statistical approach. Results: The frequencies of all three polymorphisms in the patient cohort were significantly different from those in the control cohort. Compared to the control cohort, carriers of variant alleles of CYP1B1*2 355T and CYP2E1*5 -1293C showed a higher risk for developing laryngeal cancer (for CYP1B1*2 355T, adjusted OR = 2.657, P <0.001; for CYP2E1*5 -1293C, adjusted OR = 1.938, P <0.001), while carriers of mutation allele CYP1B1*3 4326G showed a lower risk (adjusted OR = 0.562, P <0.001). Joint effects of these polymorphisms were observed. When compared to haplotype G355C4326G−1293, haplotypes T355C4326G−1293 (adjusted OR = 1.809, P <0.001), G355C4326C−1293 (adjusted OR = 1.644, P = 0.044), and T355C4326C−1293 (adjusted OR = 3.104, P <0.001) were associated with a significantly higher laryngeal cancer risk. The adjusted ORs for non-smokers, non-drinkers, smokers, and drinkers with the GT/TT genotype at CYP1B1*2 G355T were 2.190 (P = 0.006), 2.008 (P = 0.001), 5.875 (P <0.001), and 4.518 (P <0.001), respectively. Conclusions: CYP1B1*2 355T and CYP2E1*5 -1293C are associated with an increased laryngeal cancer risk, while CYP1B1*3 4326G is associated with a decreased risk. These polymorphisms showed joint effects on laryngeal cancer risk. The Huadu flora of Guangdong Province, South China contains the lepidodendrid Lepidodendron shanyangense Wu et He, its putative rhizophore Stigmaria cf. ficoides (Brongniart) Sternberg; sphenophyte s.l. Archaeocalamites scrobiculatus (Brongniart) Stur; bowmanitid Sphenophyllum tenerrimum (Ettingshausen) Stur; pteridophyll Sphenopteris sp. of uncertain taxonomic position; undetermined ferns gen. et sp. nov.; lyginopterid pteridosperm Rhodeopteridium hsianghsiangense (Sze) Zhang, Zhao et Wu, a trigonocarpoid pteridosperm represented by fronds and isolated pinnules of Paripteris gigantea (Sternberg) Gothan, male fructifications of Potoniea sp., and seeds of Trigonocarpus sp. Ecologically, the Early Carboniferous (Visean) Huadu vegetation was divided into two neighboring communities: (1) a near-shore hydrophilous 'community A' with predominating Archaeocalamites and Rhodeopteridium; and (2) a wet forest 'community B' with predominating shrubby trigonocarpalean pteridosperm Paripteris gigantea (Sternberg) Gothan and tall tree-like lepidodendrid Lepidodendron shanyangense Wu et He. Disanthus cercidifolius subsp. longipes is an endangered species in China. Genetic diversity and structure analysis of this species was investigated using amplified fragments length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting. Nei's gene diversity ranged from 0.1290 to 0.1394. The AMOVA indicated that 75.06% of variation was distributed within populations, while the between-group component 5.04% was smaller than the between populations-within-group component 19.90%. Significant genetic differentiation was detected between populations. Genetic and geographical distances were not correlated. PCA and genetic structure analysis showed that populations from East China were together with those of the Nanling Range. These patterns of genetic diversity and levels of genetic variation may be the result of D. c. subsp. longipes restricted to several isolated habitats and “excess flowers production, but little fruit set”. Modern palms are diverse and widespread in the tropics and subtropics, especially the tropical rainforests. However, most fossil palm records have been reported from regions of relatively higher latitude. In this paper seven species of coryphoid palm from the Eocene Changchang Basin of Hainan Island of South China are reported. These are Sabalites asymmetricus sp. nov., S. robustus sp. nov., S. tenufolius sp. nov., S. szei Guo, S. changchagnensis Guo, Livistona sp., and Amesoneuron sp. According to leaf morphological characteristics, they can be classified as members of the subfamily Coryphoideae. In extant flora of Hainan Island, only three species of Livistona have costapalmate leaves. These palm fossils indicate that, during the Eocene, flora in Hainan Island included a diversity of coryphoid palms, which have some bearings on the reconstruction of the palaeoclimate of South China. * Premise of the study: Dipterocarps are the representative component of tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia and hold important economic and ecological significance, but their origin and migration are controversial. Information on dipterocarpaceous fossils, particularly the more convincing reproductive structures, not only can improve the phylogenetic and phytogeographic studies of this family, but also provide important information for reconstructing paleoclimate. * Methods: Morphologically preserved winged fruits and associated leaves were collected from the Late Eocene Huangniuling Formation, Maoming Basin, South China. We determined their taxonomic positions based on comparative morphology with similar extant and fossil specimens and discuss their phytogeographic and paleoclimatic implications by consulting the distribution and habitat of fossil and modern populations. * Key results: The Late Eocene winged fruits are attributed to Shorea Roxburgh ex Gaertner (Dipterocarpaceae) as Shorea maomingensis sp. nov. The associated leaves are recognized as Shorea sp. based on leaf architecture, and they are likely to be conspecific with the winged fruits. * Conclusions: The discovery of dipterocarps indicates that they had arrived in tropical and humid South China by the Late Eocene. Dipterocarps including Shorea exhibit a wide range of physiological tolerance to climate; palynological analysis suggests an increase in aridity and seasonality in the Maoming Basin from the Late Eocene. Dipterocarps became adapted to this seasonal climate from the Late Eocene to Early Miocene, expanded northward in the climatic optimum of the Middle Miocene, and declined and gradually disappeared from the southeastern part of the continent from the Late Miocene. Abstract: This study reports the first fruit fossil record of the genus Morinda from the Eocene. Morinda chinensis sp. nov. was found in the Eocene coal-bearing series in the Changchang Basin of Hainan Island, south China, and belongs to Sect. Roioc of Morinda according to the characters of its infructescence. This is the first fossil report of Morinda in a tropical area of China and it moves the fossil record of this genus from the Miocene back to the Eocene. Fossil reproductive structure from the Eocene of the Changchang Basin (Hainan Island, South China) is recognized as Chaneya hainanensis sp. nov. This new species is characterized by persistent corolla of five obovate petals with three subparallel primary venation linked by arching secondary veins, circular central disk bearing two orbicular ovaries or fruit bodies. This discovery confirms the presence of the extinct fruit genus Chaneya in low-latitude tropical area, providing significant fossil evidence for investigating the origin, migration, and phytogeography of this genus and discussing the Tertiary floristic exchanges among North America, eastern Asia, and Europe. Considering the distribution of this genus and its extant relatives and the climate changes during the Cenozoic, we hypothesize that Chaneya was a widespread tropical or subtropical taxon, but, with climate cooling, became extinct in northern latitudes and evolved into Picrasma (Simaroubaceae) and Rutaceae mainly in modern tropics and subtropics. Background: This phase II study is performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of capecitabine combined with preoperative radiotherapy (RT) in Chinese patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC).Methods: Between February 2007 and December 2008, 62 patients with LARC were treated with capecitabine (825 mg/m(2), twice daily) and concurrent RT (50.4 Gy/28 fractions). Patients underwent surgery after 6-8 weeks of combined therapy, followed by 4 cycles of adjuvant capecitabine (1,250 mg/m(2), twice daily on days 1-14, every 3 weeks). The primary endpoint was the rate of pathologic complete response (pCR).Results: Fifty-eight patients (93.5%) completed the preoperative chemoradiation course as initially planned. The most severe hematologic adverse event was leucopenia, which occurred with grade 2 intensity in 12 (19.7%) patients and grade 3 in 2 (3.3%) patients. Grade 3 diarrhea and hand-foot syndrome (HFS) were observed in one (1.6%) and two (3.3%) patients, respectively. However, no grade 4 toxicity was observed. There were no treatment-related deaths during this study. Of the 59 patients treated with surgery, all had radial margins (R0 resections). Among the 29 patients with the primary tumor ≤5 cm from the anal verge, 18 (62.1%) underwent sphincter-preserving surgical resections. pCR was found in eight patients (13.6%). The pathologic stage was lower than the initial clinical stage in 57.6% (34/59), 63.4% (26/41), and 81.4% (48/59) of the resected tumors for the primary tumor (T), lymph node (N), and combined TN categories, respectively. The estimate of disease-free survival and overall survival at 24 months were 80.6% (95% CI, 70.8-90.4%) and 92.5% (95% CI, 85.9-99.1%), respectively.Conclusion: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy with capecitabine and RT appears to be a safe, well-tolerated, and effective neoadjuvant treatment modality for LARC. Abstract: The modern distribution centre of the genus Craigia is situated in South China and adjacent northernmost Vietnam, but it was widely distributed in Europe, North America and East Asia during the Tertiary. Up to now, the genus Craigia includes only two extant and two fossil species. Based on a detailed study of the fossil material from the coal-bearing deposits of the Changchang Formation (Eocene) from the Changchang Basin of Hainan Island, China, Craigia hainanensis sp. nov. is established. This is the first fossil record of Craigia in its modern distribution centre which provides a new data on the origin and phytogeographic history of this genus. The distribution of extant and fossil Craigia in North America, Europe, Central and East Asia suggests that the Far East of Russia is a possible centre of origin of Craigia where the fossil record of this genus goes back to the Paleocene. During the Eocence global warming event, Craigia had dispersed rapidly to North America, Spitzbergen, East and Central Asia, and reached its modern distribution centre in South China no later than in the early Late Eocene. Abstract: Two types of fossil fruit, one belonging to Palaeocarya sp. (Juglandaceae) and the other to Acer cf. A. miofranchetii Hu et Chaney (Aceraceae), are found in the Eocene coal-bearing series from the Changchang Basin of Hainan Island, China. This is the first fossil record of Palaeocarya and Acer in a tropical area of China. These fossils provide evidence for an investigation of the phytogeographic history of these two genera. Since their extant relative genera are distributed mostly in northern temperate or tropical–subtropical mountainous regions, I propose that the Changchang Basin of Hainan Island was close to a mountainous region in the Eocene; the plants bearing these fruits were growing at a mid-high altitude with a relatively cool climate, and the fruits were not preserved in situ but transported to the fossil site. Fossil records indicate that the genus Pinus L. split into two subgenera by the Late Cretaceous, although subgenus Strobus (D. Don) Lemmon is less well documented than subgenus Pinus L., especially in eastern Asia. In this paper, Pinus maomingensis sp. nov. is established based on a compressed seed cone from the upper Eocene of the Maoming Basin of southern China. This species is attributed to genus Pinus, subgenus Strobus, section Quinquefoliae Duhamel, subsection Strobus Loudon based on the combination of morphological characters obtained from the cone scales, specifically from the terminal umbo, rhombic apophysis, and cuticle structure. Associated fascicles of needle leaves with deciduous sheaths and bulbous bases are recognized as Pinus sp. and also represent Pinus subgenus Strobus. This new discovery from the Maoming Basin constitutes the first megafossil record of subgenus Strobus from southern China and implies that the members of this subgenus arrived in the southern region of China by the late Eocene. The extant species of subgenus Strobus are mainly distributed in northern temperate and tropical to subtropical mountainous regions. Abstract: Petrified dicotyledonous wood is reported for the first time from the Eocene Youganwo Formation of the Maoming Basin, South China. The combination of anatomical features including solitary and radial multiples of vessels, simple perforation plates, medium to large alternate intervessel pits, septate and non-septate fibers, rare axial parenchyma, heterocellular rays, and crystals in chambered ray cells and axial parenchyma cells occurs in extant Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Elaeocarpaceae, Salicaceae, Phyllanthaceae and the fossil wood genus Paraphyllanthoxylon. Closest resemblance to extant Bischofia javanica is justified and a new fossil wood species Bischofia maomingensis sp. nov. is proposed after comparing with these taxa. Abstract: A new species of Nelumbo Adanson is described from the Eocene of the Changchang Basin, Hainan Island, South China. This is the first comprehensive report on a fossil Nelumbo species from the Eocene of the Changchang Basin, Hainan Island. The co-occurrence of fruits, tubers, rhizomes with numerous adventitious roots, leaves, and receptacles indicates that the plants grew where they are preserved. These specimens, combined with palynological assemblage and other macrofossils, indicate a tropical or subtropical humid climate in the Changchang Basin from the late early Eocene to early late Eocene. The Pleistocene Epoch, marked by significant climatic fluctuations and glaciations, profoundly impacted plant populations. However, our understanding of the influences of last glaciations on tropical-subtropical flora and vegetation remains limited due to insufficient data. Here, we present mummified wood of Magnolia insignis (Wall.) Bl. from the Upper Pleistocene (33–30 ka cal. BP) of Maoming, South China, providing direct evidence of a broader historical range for this species during the period prior to the LGM in the last glaciation. Combining these findings with results from MaxEnt modeling, we demonstrate an expanded range of M. insignis into lower latitudes during last glaciation with subsequent interglacial contraction. This represents the second documented case of such a scenario for a cold-tolerant high-elevation plant species at low latitudes. The results of MaxEnt modeling and a comparison of climatic data across different time periods indicate that the contraction of M. insignis from the Maoming and other low latitude regions of East Asia was driven by the increase in summer temperatures during Holocene. This study not only sheds light on the responses of cold-adapted mountainous species at low latitudes of East Asia to last glaciation, but also justifies the importance of their protection in the view of nowadays and future climate changes. Background Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and its prohormone activating enzyme are associated with central obesity, suggesting there may be a potential relationship between proANP 1–98 and central obesity. However, the association is still lack of population-based evidence. We explored the association in a general population of China. Methods We measured plasma proANP 1–98 , waist circumference and other traditional biomarkers in 2203 participants aged ≥ 30 y. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the association between plasma proANP 1–98 and central obesity, and odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Results High proANP 1–98 was significantly associated with increased risk of central obesity in participants, and the multivariate adjusted OR (95% CI) of central obesity associated with the second, third and fourth quartiles of proANP 1–98 were 1.33 (1.03–1.72), 1.69 (1.31–2.19) and 1.76 (1.35–2.29), respectively, compared with the lowest quartile of proANP 1–98 . There was a dose-response relationship between proANP 1–98 and risk of central obesity among the participants (P trend < 0.001). Sensitivity analyses further confirmed these associations. Adding proANP 1–98 to a model containing conventional risk factors improved discriminatory power of central obesity (as shown by significant improvement in continuous NRI and IDI). Conclusions Contrary to known reduced ANP levels in central obesity, we found that plasma proANP 1–98 was positively associated with central obesity, suggesting that elevated plasma proANP 1–98 may be a marker or a risk factor for central obesity. The onset and development of the Asian monsoon systems is a topic that has attracted considerable research effort but proxy data limitations, coupled with a diversity of definitions and metrics characterizing monsoon phenomena, have generated much debate. Failure of geological proxies to yield metrics capable of distinguishing between rainfall seasonality induced by migrations of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) from that attributable to topographically modified seasonal pressure reversals has frustrated attempts to understand mechanisms underpinning monsoon development and dynamics. Here we circumvent the use of such single climate parameter metrics in favor of detecting directly the distinctive attributes of different monsoon regimes encoded in leaf fossils. Leaf form adapts to the prevailing climate, particularly under the extreme seasonal stresses imposed by monsoons, so it is likely that fossil leaves carry a unique signature of past monsoon regimes. Leaf form trait spectra obtained from fossils from Eocene basins in southern China were compared with those seen in modern leaves growing under known climate regimes. The fossil leaf trait spectra, including those derived from previously published fossil floras from northwestern India, were most similar to those found in vegetation exposed to the modern Indonesia–Australia Monsoon (I–AM), which is largely a product of seasonal migrations of the ITCZ. The presence of this distinctive leaf physiognomic signature suggests that although a monsoon climate existed in Eocene time across southern Asia the characteristics of the modern topographically-enhanced South Asia Monsoon had yet to develop. By the Eocene leaves in South Asia had become well adapted to an I–AM type regime across many taxa and points to the existence of a pervasive monsoon climate prior to the Eocene. This paper describes a new species of the genusAdocus(A. inexpectatus, sp. nov.), based on an almost complete shell from the upper Eocene Youganwo (= Youkanwo) Formation of the Maoming Basin, China. The inclusion ofA. inexpectatusin a phylogenetic analysis of Adocusia resulted in a polytomy withAdocus aksaryandA. amtgai(both from the Upper Cretaceous of Asia). This clade formed a polytomy with the North American species ofAdocus. Like other ‘true’Adocus,A. inexpectatushas overlapping of the marginals onto the costals in the middle and posterior parts of the carapace and sculpturing of the shell surface with small grooves and pits. Thus,A. inexpectatusrepresents the first ‘true’Adocusfrom the Paleogene of Asia. Other specimens from the Paleogene of Asia that have been referred toAdocus, characterized by shell sculpturing with small dots and unknown condition of the marginal/costal overlapping, are distinct from ‘true’Adocusand herein referred to as ‘Adocus’ spp. Here we also report the presence of ‘Adocus’ from the Paleocene of North America. Our study indicates that the evolutionary and biogeographic history of the Adocidae was more complicated than considered previously, including previously unrecognized dispersal events between Asia and North America. Background: Epidemics of infectious diseases have a great negative impact on people's daily life. How it changes over time and what kind of laws it obeys are important questions that researchers are always interested in. Among the characteristics of infectious diseases, the phenomenon of recrudescence is undoubtedly of great concern. Understanding the mechanisms of the outbreak cycle of infectious diseases could be conducive for public health policies to the government., Method: In this study, we collected time-series data for nine class C notifiable infectious diseases from 2009 to 2021 using public datasets from the National Health Commission of China. Oscillatory power of each infectious disease was captured using the method of the power spectrum analysis., Results: We found that all the nine class C diseases have strong oscillations, which could be divided into three categories according to their oscillatory frequencies each year. Then, we calculated the oscillation power and the average number of infected cases of all nine diseases in the first 6 years (2009-2015) and the next 6 years (2015-2021) since the update of the surveillance system. The change of oscillation power is positively correlated to the change in the number of infected cases. Background: COVID-19 was first reported in 2019, and the Chinese government immediately carried out stringent and effective control measures in response to the epidemic., Objective: Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) may have impacted incidences of other infectious diseases as well. Potential explanations underlying this reduction, however, are not clear. Hence, in this study, we aim to study the influence of the COVID-19 prevention policies on other infectious diseases (mainly class B infectious diseases) in China., Methods: Time series data sets between 2017 and 2021 for 23 notifiable infectious diseases were extracted from public data sets from the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China. Several indices (peak and trough amplitudes, infection selectivity, preferred time to outbreak, oscillatory strength) of each infectious disease were calculated before and after the COVID-19 outbreak., Results: We found that the prevention and control policies for COVID-19 had a strong, significant reduction effect on outbreaks of other infectious diseases. A clear event-related trough (ERT) was observed after the outbreak of COVID-19 under the strict control policies, and its decreasing amplitude is related to the infection selectivity and preferred outbreak time of the disease before COVID-19. We also calculated the oscillatory strength before and after the COVID-19 outbreak and found that it was significantly stronger before the COVID-19 outbreak and does not correlate with the trough amplitude., Conclusions: Our results directly demonstrate that prevention policies for COVID-19 have immediate additional benefits for controlling most class B infectious diseases, and several factors (infection selectivity, preferred outbreak time) may have contributed to the reduction in outbreaks. Although many fossil and molecular data suggest migrations from Malesia and Asia to Australia appear to dominate floristic exchange between Australian and Asian rainforests, evidence is emerging that demonstrate dispersal of plant groups from Australia to Asia. In this paper, a new species Agathis ledongensis sp. nov. is described on the basis of silicified wood from the late Oligocene-early Miocene of the Qiutangling Formation in Ledong, Hainan Island, South China. It is the first fossil record of Agathis in the Northern Hemisphere, and the only known fossil evidence of its dispersal outside of Gondwana. The close affinity of the fossil wood from Ledong with the genus Agathis was confirmed by comparing quantitative traits in 31 wood samples of 20 species representing all three extant genera of the Araucariaceae. The percentage of tracheids with uniseriate pitting on radial walls is shown as an additional diagnostic trait for separating Agathis and Wollemia from Araucaria. The wood of Agathis ledongensis provides evidence for the dispersal of this important plant group from Australia, or another Gondwanan terrane, to eastern Asia based on reliable fossil data. It records the occurrence of this genus in Hainan Island by the early Miocene, i.e. at the beginning of the formation of the island chains between Australia and the South-East Asia and thus the provision of a land migration route. As the land routes between these continents were restricted at that time, the migration of Agathis to Malesia and Asia was presumably facilitated by long-distance dispersal of its winged seeds by wind.

A new fossil leaf species, Liquidambar bella (Altingiaceae), is described from the lower part of the Eocene Huangniuling Formation, Maoming Basin, South China. Suprabasal venation in the fossil lobed Liquidambar leaves is reported for the first time. The new species provides additional palaeobotanical evidence on the morphological variability of this genus supporting the idea of combining the genera Liquidambar, Semiliquidambar and Altingia into the single genus Liquidambar as proposed based on molecular markers.

Background: Association between pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (proANP) and hyperuricemia has not yet been investigated in population. This study aimed to examine the association in Chinese Han women., Methods: We measured plasma proANP, serum uric acid, and other traditional biomarkers in 1360 women older than 30 years residing in the Gusu district of Suzhou City. Association between plasma proANP and hyperuricemia was analyzed in women aged ≥45 years and those aged <45 years, respectively., Results: In women aged ≥45 years, the odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] of hyperuricemia with high proANP (over the median) was 0.57 (0.34-0.97) compared to those with low proANP (p=0.040). After adjustment for age and other potential covariates, a high plasma proANP was associated with a decreased risk of hyperuricemia in women aged ≥45 years (OR 0.40; 95% CI, 0.19-0.84), when the highest and lowest categories were compared. In contrast, there was no association between plasma proANP and hyperuricemia in women aged <45 years. We did not observe a significant interaction between age and proANP (pinteraction=0.113). Sensitivity analyses further confirmed these age-specific findings., Conclusions: Plasma proANP was significantly and inversely associated with hyperuricemia in Chinese Han women aged ≥45 years. This study suggests that an increased plasma proANP should be a protective factor of hyperuricemia among middle-aged and old women.

Background: Corin has been suggested to be associated with hypertension by cell- and animal-based studies. However, the association still lacks population-based evidence which critically promotes translation from basic research to clinical and preventive practice. Here, we aimed to explore the association in a general population of China., Methods: From January to May 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional study in 2,498 participants aged above 30 years, residing in Gusu district of Suzhou. Serum soluble corin and blood pressure were measured., Results: Hypertensive participants had a higher level of serum corin than nonhypertensive participants (median (interquartile range): 1,836.83 (1,497.85-2,327.87) pg/ml vs. 1,579.14 (1,322.18-1,956.82) pg/ml, P < 0.001). Higher serum corin was positively associated with prevalent hypertension (odds ratio (OR) = 2.01, P < 0.001). In the multiple analysis, participants in the third (OR = 1.43, P = 0.007) and fourth (OR = 1.96, P < 0.001) quartiles had significantly increased odds of hypertension compared to those in the lowest quartile of serum corin. ORs of hypertension positively and significantly increased with serum corin levels (P for trend <0.001). Further subgroup analysis showed that ORs of hypertension associated with high corin (over the median level of serum corin: 1,689.20 pg/ml) were still significant in subgroups by age, body mass index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting plasma glucose (all P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Our study showed that hypertensive participants had an increased serum corin level compared to those without hypertension. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of several molecular markers, fruit anatomy, and pollen morphology, the genera Altingia and Semiliquidambar were formally transferred to the genus Liquidambar. The new species of Liquidambar from the Eocene of South China significantly extends our knowledge of the variability of the morphological characters of this genus in the geological past. Fossil leaves in conjunction with data on the associated reproductive structures allow us to make inferences about patterns in the evolutionary history of Liquidambar.•, Methods: Fossil leaves and associated reproductive structures preserved as impressions were described and compared with the corresponding organs of extant and fossil relatives. The morphological variation of numerous leaves was examined by stereomicroscopy.•, Key Results: Liquidambar maomingensis sp. nov. is characterized by polymorphic leaves including both palmately lobed and unlobed leaves. This study presents the first observations of such dimorphism in the fossil record of Liquidambar leaves. Two distinct leaf groups are interpreted as sun and shade leaves.•, Conclusions: The fossil leaves and associated infructescences from Maoming probably belong to the same plant. Objective: Corin has been suggested to be associated with obesity by cell- and animal-based studies. However, the association has not yet been studied in populations. Here, the aim was to explore the association in a general population of China., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Data on demographic information, lifestyle risk factors, and personal medical history were collected; body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressures were measured; and serum corin, blood lipids, and blood glucose were determined in 2498 participants aged above 30 years., Results: Log-transformed corin correlated to body mass index (r = 0.197, P < 0.001) and waist circumference (r = 0.289, P < 0.001). In the risk factor-adjusted analysis, compared with participants in the lowest quartile of serum corin, participants in the 4th quartile had significantly increased risk of prevalent overweight or obesity (OR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.67-3.04) and central obesity (OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.30-2.34). ORs of overweight or obesity and central obesity positively and significantly increased with serum corin levels (P for trend < 0.001)., Conclusions: Serum soluble corin was significantly and positively associated with obesity.
