Much attention has been devoted to the economic benefits of emission trading systems (ETSs), but research concerning the SO2 ETS in China is scarce. We examine China's SO2 ETS in 2007 from the perspective of industrial sub-sectors and employ the difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD) model to test whether the SO2 ETS can promote industrial total factor productivity (TFP). We identify whether it is the average effect or the dynamic effect of the SO2 ETS that can improve industrial TFP. The heterogeneity test results indicate that this policy has diverse influence in different regions and industries, and the effect is better in pollution-intensive industries. We also find that the policy enhances industrial TFP by promoting efficient technological innovation and capital allocation. Our findings provide evidence that supports the Porter Hypothesis and a guide for the industrialization of developing countries. Chinese policymakers should strengthen environmental enforcement, set quotas accordingly, and encourage technological innovation to improve industrial TFP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study proposes four kinds of hybrid source–grid–storage systems consisting of photovoltaic and wind energy, and a power grid including different batteries and hydrogen storage systems for Sanjiao town. HOMER-PRO was applied for the optimal design and techno-economic analysis of each case, aiming to explore reproducible energy supply solutions for China's industrial clusters. The results show that the proposed system is a fully feasible and reliable solution for industry-based towns, like Sanjiao, in their pursuit of carbon neutrality. In addition, the source-side price sensitivity analysis found that the hydrogen storage solution was cost-competitive only when the capital costs on the storage and source sides were reduced by about 70%. However, the hydrogen storage system had the lowest carbon emissions, about 14% lower than the battery ones. It was also found that power generation cost reduction had a more prominent effect on the whole system's NPC and LCOE reduction. This suggests that policy support needs to continue to push for generation-side innovation and scaling up, while research on different energy storage types should be encouraged to serve the needs of different source–grid–load–storage systems. The high-quality development of the logistics industry, which is an essential and strategic industry supporting the national economic operation and a fundamental component of modern industrial system construction, is not only a key component of the high-quality development of the national economy but also the main driving force for the high-quality growth of the national economy. As the supporting industry of the national economy, the logistics industry will also face spatial disequilibrium during development. Therefore, to achieve the coordinated development of the logistics industry, the high-quality development and the spatial-temporal unbalanced development status of the logistics industry in each province must be figured out first. This research established a comprehensive evaluation system for the logistics industry development, which included 14 basic indexes based on the provincial-level panel data of 30 provinces in China during 2009–2020. Then, the regional logistics development level score in China was measured using the entropy weight TOPSIS method, and the differences in the regional logistics development level in China and the dynamic evolution law of their distribution were deeply explored through the Dagum Gini coefficient model. The research results revealed that the evaluation index system (14 basic indexes) for the regional logistics industry development level in China was relatively scientific and reasonable; the regional logistics industry development level in China was increasing year by year, showing a steady upward trend, and the imbalance in the eastern, central, and western regions regarding the regional logistics development was shrinking year by year; the average intergroup contribution rate was 36.33%, the intragroup contribution rate was 31.49%, and the contribution rate of intensity of trans variation was 32.19%, proving that the regional differences exerted a most extraordinary influence on the spatial differences in the regional logistics industry development level in China. The research results have important reference value for summarizing the meaning of high-quality logistics industry development, constructing the evaluation index system for logistics industry development, and exploring the reasons for the temporal and spatial differences in logistics industry development in China. Recent changes in the relationship between the postponement of the statutory retirement age, pension participation, and the precariousness of employment in China may conceal the lasting negative effects on workers' current and ongoing welfare. Grounded on China's normalised precarious employment with individualisation, insecurity, and instability, and identifying the current Urban Employee Basic Pension (UEBP) as based on traditional industrialism, the empirical evidence from 68 workers in precarious employment shows how limited UEBP participation even extends working life. Under the institutionalised inequality of UEBP, and without long-term coworkers who can promote understanding of the system, the uncertainties of future livelihood and "voluntary" participation in the UEBP (re)shape the rationality of precarious workers towards minimum participation. Hence, raising the statutory retirement ages is unlikely to improve their UEBP participation, but rather lengthen the period of precarious employment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rational division of environmental management powers between governments is the institutional basis for promoting the transformation of industrial ecology (IE). Based on panel data of 105 prefecture-level cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) of China from 2006 to 2020, this study analyzes the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of IE and environmental decentralization (ED) in the YREB by constructing evaluation index systems. The spatial econometric model is used to explore the effects of ED on IE under economic growth pressure (EGP) and officials' tenure (LT). The results indicate that regional differences in IE in the YREB exhibit a fluctuating downward trend and that the imbalance between regions is the leading cause of overall differences. Furthermore, IE presents a significant spatial positive correlation. ED has a restraining effect on IE and is regulated by EGP and LT. Moderate EGP can mitigate the negative effects of ED on IE, while LT intensifies the negative effects of ED on IE. Heterogeneity exists in the relationship between ED and IE in regional locations and pollution control pressure areas. These results are significant for developing a modern industrial system, formulating differentiated environmental protection strategies, and improving the government performance appraisal system. Against the backdrop of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goals in China, the park-level integrated energy system is a significant approach to meeting the energy consumption demand of users and improving the utilization rate of new energy. To take into account both the interests of integrated energy services (IES) providers and the current power market rules in China, targeting at low-carbon energy consumption, a balancing service mode for integrated energy services providers is created herein based on the idea of balancing multiple interests of regional integrated energy services providers. It aims to break down the market barriers and address the tricky problem that the integrated energy services industry fails to establish a sophisticated industrial system under the original mode. Combining the integrated energy services with the auxiliary market of power balance, the paper analyzes the characteristics of energy flow within the system, and puts forward the optimization scheme of regional integrated energy balancing services under the low-carbon background. The objective is solved by Mayfly algorithm and compared for analysis, and the results show that the optimal daily operating cost is 2632.59 yuan and the daily carbon emission is 3869.90 kg under the typical industrial scenario. The examples provided here show that the optimization plan for integrated energy balancing services can reduce carbon emissions from the park-level integrated energy system and boost the revenue for integrated energy service providers. Rapid urbanization and industrialization promote economic growth as well as bring carbon emissions, which seriously threaten the eco-environment and socioeconomic sustainable development. Facing increasing resource constraints, improving carbon emissions efficiency (CEE) is conducive to promote coordinated development of economy and environmental protection. In recent years, regional economic integration (REI) has rapidly developed. It can not only promote factors flow between regions but also achieve industrial and economic agglomeration. However, few studies have been reported in the literature about the relationship between the REI and CEE. In this study, we first illustrate how the REI influences CEE in theory, then take the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) as a case study to conduct empirical research. The results show that (1) the overall CEE value in the YRD has exhibited an upward trend from 2000 to 2020, and its spatial distribution has revealed a significant auto-correlation pattern. (2) On the whole, the REI act a noteworthy positive impact on CEE. When considering types of cities, it is found to have significant positive impacts for the CEE in economically developed cities, while it exhibits a negative impact in the less-developed ones. (3) Upgrading industrial structure and increasing per capita GDP can promote the CEE, but hinder its growth in surrounding areas. Our findings suggest that the government should formulate a unified overall plan to facilitate REI development and establish a modern industrial system of clean and low-carbon to promote regional sustainable development. To address the increasing hydrogen demand and carbon emissions of industrial parks, this paper proposes an integrated energy system dispatch strategy considering multi-hydrogen supply and comprehensive demand response. This model adopts power-to-gas technology to produce green hydrogen, replacing a portion of gray hydrogen and incorporates a carbon capture system to effectively reduce the overall carbon emissions of the industrial park. Meanwhile, incentive-based and price-based demand response strategies are implemented to optimize the load curve. A scheduling model is established targeting the minimization of procurement, operation, carbon emission, and wind curtailment costs. The case study of a northern industrial park in China demonstrates that the joint supply of green and gray hydrogen reduces carbon emissions by 40.98% and costs by 17.93% compared to solely using gray hydrogen. The proposed approach successfully coordinates the economic and environmental performance of the integrated energy system. Since the 21st century, as the digital economy has flourished and the Fourth Industrial Revolution has deepened, emerging technologies have exerted a significant influence on social development, leading to the rapid informatization and digitalization of society. Therefore, in the digital age, industrial intellectualization and energy intensity may interact. In this study, an industrial intelligent system is constructed considering three aspects, and the relationship is explored between industrial intellectualization and energy intensity from 2006 to 2018 in China. Industrial intellectualization can effectively improve energy efficiency and thus restrain energy intensity with a significant lag effect. In addition, China's energy intensity is highly spatially autocorrelated and spatially agglomerated. The negative spatial spillover effect of industrial intellectualization on energy intensity is also of concern. Finally, the nonlinear effects of industrial intellectualization on energy intensity are comprehensively analyzed under different levels of economic growth, technological progress, industrial restructuring, educational progress, fi- nancial development, and environmental regulation. Correctly identifying causal relations among the industries provide accurate orientation to the dynamical industry connection, which is crucial to drive the industrial structure modification and optimization for a country. Since the non-separability, causality in industrial system has different formalization, in this paper, we exploit both dynamical and statistical measures driven by industry indexes to identify direct causation from indirect ones, which the variables are non-separable, weakly or moderately interacting. Partial cross mapping is employed to eliminate indirect causal influence among the 28 industries in China, further to explore real causal links for nonlinear industrial network system. The individual, local and overall linkage effects are measured out. Data experience shows that service-oriented industries are more active than before the epidemic of COVID-19, which brings benefits to the industries of communication, bank, textile and garment. Manufacturing industry is the central node of industrial chain network, which exhibits higher and stronger motivation under the background of COVID-19, and banking sector shows a persistent and strong influence on other industries at the post-epidemic era. Radix pseudostellariae is one of the well-known genuine medicinal herbs in Fujian province, China. However, the continuous cropping obstacles with respect to R. pseudostellariae have seriously affected the sustainable utilization of medicinal resources and the development of related industrial systems. The occurrence of continuous cropping obstacles is a comprehensive effect of multiple deteriorating biological and abiotic factors in the rhizosphere soil. Therefore, intensive ecological methods have been the key to abating such obstacles. In this study, four treatments were set up, i.e., fallow (RP-F), fallow + bacterial fertilizer (RP-F-BF), rice-paddy-upland rotation (RP-R), and rice-paddy-upland rotation + bacterial fertilizer (RP-R-BF), during the interval between two plantings of R. pseudostellariae, with a newly planted (NP) treatment as the control. The results show that the yield of R. pseudostellariae under the RP-F treatment decreased by 46.25% compared to the NP treatment. Compared with the RP-F treatment, the yields of the RP-F-BF, RP-R, and RP-R-BF treatments significantly increased by 14.11%, 27.79%, and 62.51%, respectively. The medicinal quality of R. pseudostellariae treated with RP-R-BF was superior to that achieved with the other treatments, with the total saponin and polysaccharide contents increasing by 8.54% and 27.23%, respectively, compared to the RP-F treatment. The ecological intensive treatment of RP-R-BF significantly increased the soil pH, content of organic matter, abundance of beneficial microbial populations, and soil enzyme activity, thus remediating the deteriorating environment of continuous cropping soil. On this basis, the ecological intensive treatment RP-R-BF significantly increased the activity of protective enzymes and the expression levels of genes related to disease and stress resistance in leaves and root tubers. Redundancy and Pearson correlation analyses indicated that rice-paddy-upland rotation improved the soil structure, promoted the growth of eutrophic r-strategy bacterial communities, enhanced compound oxidation and reduction, broke the relationship between the deteriorating environment and harmful biological factors, and eventually weakened the intensity of harmful factors. The subsequent application of bacterial fertilizer improved the beneficial biological and abiotic factors, activated various ecological functions of the soil, enhanced the ecological relationship between various biological and abiotic factors, and reduced the stress intensity of R. pseudostellariae, thereby improving its disease and stress resistance, and ultimately reflecting the recovery of yield and quality. The results indirectly prove that the intensive ecological amelioration of the soil environment was the main factor for the yield recovery of R. pseudostellariae under continuous cropping. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is not only an important economic center in China, but also one of the major regions contributing to China's carbon emissions. Revealing the spatial distribution between carbon emissions and economic growth is essential for the formulation of low-carbon development policies. Following the principle from macro to micro, this paper investigates the spatial evolution trend and distribution characteristics between carbon emissions and economic growth in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region from 2005 to 2020 by applying imbalance index model, the rank-scale rule, and decoupling index model. The results show that the imbalance index of carbon emissions decreased between 0.0601 and 0.0533 in a fluctuating way, indicating that the imbalance of spatial distribution of carbon emissions decreases. The imbalance index of economic growth increased between 0.0738 and 0.0851, indicating that economic growth has become more disequilibrated, and the spatial evolution of carbon emissions is not coordinated with economic growth. The Zipf dimension of carbon emissions declined from 1.1806 in 2005 to 0.9594 in 2020, and carbon emissions declined in big cities and increased in cities of the middle order. The Zipf dimension of economic growth increased from 1.1384 in 2005 to 1.2388 in 2020, and the economic growth monopoly in big cities increased. The decoupling coefficient of carbon emissions to economic growth declined, and the driving effect of economic growth on carbon emissions diminished. It is recommended that the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region should coordinate the allocation of factors and coordinate industrial adjustment. Environmental regulation with spatial spillover effect is an important way to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of modern water resources structure, and then achieve sustainable development of China's water resources. How does environmental regulation affect the GWRE to alleviate or solve China's water shortage? In this paper, the GWRE is measured based on panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2000–2020, and the impact of high pressure (low suction) and heterogeneity on GWRE by environmental regulations is explored. The results revealed that the high pressure of environmental regulation significantly promoted the improvement of GWRE, but the improvement effect of low suction power was not significant. Similar conclusions are drawn under the tests of population size-economic distance and population size-technology distance. The high pressure of market-type and autonomous-type environmental regulation has a significant effect on GWRE, while the improvement effect of command-type environmental regulation is weak. The high pressure of environmental regulation in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions has a decreasing effect on GWRE. It is recommended to break the principle of GDP performance appraisal, establish and improve the "green performance" evaluation system, adopt regional differentiated environmental regulation policies, and establish a modern green water resources industrial structure system. Traditional industrial enterprises are primarily high pollution enterprises and high energy consumption. The achievement of the "dual carbon" motive in Chinese economic activities and environmental protection plays a chief role incorporating the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) into the risk management system of industrial enterprises. However, the industrial enterprises participating in ESG rating account for 46.97% of the listed enterprises, and the industrial enterprises that pay attention to ESG information disclosure account for 35.77% of the listed enterprises. Is ESG rating essential for the enhancement of industrial enterprises? Based on the transformation and upgrading of industrial enterprises, this research investigates how the ESG rating and ESG information disclosure affect the financial risk of industrial enterprises in China. The findings suggest that: (1) In China for industrial enterprise ESG plays an essential role which results in decrease in financial problems of industrial enterprise. (2) ESG is influential on monetary risk of industrial enterprise, the quality of enterprise ESG information disclosure plays an important intermediary role. (3) The lagging of ESG rating by one period is significantly positive related to the financial risk of industrial enterprises, and the financial risk prediction of industrial enterprises can be effectively indicated by the ESG rating data, which exhibits a stronger correlation coefficient than the existing rating system. It is of great practical significance to analyze the differences of actual tax burden value-added tax (VAT) from the perspective of industrial linkage for accelerating the construction of a modern industrial system and promoting the formation of a new development pattern. This paper explains the differences and causes of the actual VAT tax burden in the manufacturing industry from the perspective of industrial linkage. According to the research results, the closer the intermediate input connection between an industry and other industries, the lower the actual VAT tax burden it bears. The characteristics of production network have a moderating effect on the relationship between the linkage of the manufacturing industries and the actual VAT tax burden. For the industries in the center of the production network, a stable backward linkage weakens the influence of industrial linkage on their actual tax burden. It is difficult for industries located in the spillover block to reduce their tax burden by adjusting the linkage of intermediate goods. In addition, highly linked manufacturing enterprises can also reduce their actual VAT tax burden by tax avoidance, tax shifting, adjusting the types of intermediate inputs and so on. Smoothing the domestic production network of the manufacturing industry and optimizing the VAT burden bearing mechanism of each manufacturing sub-industry will help promote the stable growth of the manufacturing industry and healthy development of the macro economy in China. Poverty alleviation through industrial development in China contributes to the long-standing debate on how the poor could benefit from the development. It creates four industrial organizing approaches (i.e. households operating independently, intermediary organizations providing linkages, modern enterprise leading and asset income distribution) and three ways of participation for the rural poor (i.e. participating as petty commodity producers, wage workers and shareholders), in which productivity has been improved and production relations adjusted. While highlighting the specificity of China's situation, this paper argues for the more general implications of China's case for other developing countries due to its theoretical hybridity in addressing poverty alleviation and development. Industrial ecology (IE) is the process of constructing industrial-ecological systems (IES) with the realization of the mutual benefits for industrial system (IS) and ecological system (ES). Therefore, the IE level depends on the IES development and the relationship between IS and ES. This paper calculated the development index of ES and IS to account for IES development and adopted the grey Lotka–Volterra to analyze the relationship between IS and ES. Choosing the π-shaped curve area in the Yellow River basin of China as the study area, this paper analyzed its IE level and influence factors from 2005 to 2019. Findings include: (1) The development level of IES in the Area presented significant spatial differentiation and could be classified into three levels. (2) IS and ES remained in the stage of isolated development or mutual restriction. (3) IE was found to be positively correlated with scientific innovation, economic development, openness degree, pollution control, and industrial structure while negatively correlated with urbanization, resource consumption, and government influence. This paper responds to the contributions to the review symposium on How China Escaped Shock Therapy. I discuss the strategy of economic system reform that started from the non-essential parts of the industrial system in order to eventually transform the commanding heights; the spatial dimension of reform in relation to "dual circulation" and the coastal development strategy; the nature and meaning of Chinese gradualism; and China's price stabilization strategies of the 1980s in relation to later inflationary challenges. The industrial sector is China's major element of energy consumption and carbon emissions, and carbon emissions reduction in industrial parks has become an important foothold in carbon reduction work. Predicting the future evolution trend of carbon emissions in industrial parks under different policy orientations is of great significance for China to achieve the carbon emissions peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Based on the current status of electricity consumption and carbon emissions in industrial parks, this paper takes a light industrial park as the research object, analyzes the source of carbon emissions in this park, combines the characteristics of resource endowment and industrial structure, and considers the factors influencing society, load curve, energy supply and carbon sink, thus constructing a system dynamics model of carbon emission evolution for this park. Different influencing factors are selected to set multiple target scenarios, and the GDP, carbon emissions, carbon emissions reduction and near‐zero carbon evaluation coefficient of light industrial parks are used as characterization indicators for simulation analysis. The analysis results revealed that the comprehensive scenario set by increasing the maximum installed capacity of renewable energy units and raising the proportions of environmental and science and technology inputs while adjusting the industrial growth rate of the park performed best. Formulating carbon emission reduction at the regional level is key to achieving the "dual carbon" strategy. A composite model is used to analyze the carbon emission reduction in Huaibei City based on the data from 2012 to 2021 and predict its change trend of carbon emission from 2022 to 2030. The study finds that: (1) the effects of observed factors on carbon emission in Huaibei City are complicated. Among them, the secondary industry has the greatest impact on carbon emission (weight is 0.32), and it is the key constraint factor of carbon emission. Population has the smallest impact on carbon emission (weight is 0.13), but its obstacle effect is significant. (2) The observed factors have a significant positive effect on the "dual carbon" strategy, but the improvement pressure is high. Among them, the conditions of all indicators have been improved except population, and it is found that each indicator can reach the level I before 2030, the "dual carbon" strategy can be achieved. This study deepens the understanding of regional carbon emission in China and the following conclusions are formed: (1) Grasping the carbon reduction effect of urbanization on the population to consolidate the new model of low-carbon development. (2) Identifying the key areas of carbon emission reduction to build a low-carbon emission oriented industrial system. China's rapid industrialization has brought about a series of severe resource and environment problems. The systematic analysis of industrial resource and environment pressures is of great theoretical and practical significance for promoting the green transformation of China's industrial. Taking 285 prefecture level and above cities in China as the research objects, this paper constructs the evaluation index system of industrial resource and environmental pressures, uses ArcGIS spatial analysis method, variation coefficient and Taylor index to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of industrial resource and environmental pressures in China from 2006 to 2019 at national and regional scales. Based on spatial Dubin model, the main influencing factors of industrial resource and environmental pressures in China are analyzed. The results show that: ① The industrial resource pressure in China is increasing and shows the spatial change characteristics of gradually decreasing from coastal to inland areas. The degree of spatial agglomeration is increasing, and the hot spots of industrial resource pressure are concentrated in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta region, the scope of hot spots is expanding. ② The industrial environmental pressure in China shows a fluctuating downward trend, and the spatial differentiation characteristics are "high in the east and north, low in the west and south". Areas with high industrial environmental pressure are mostly located at the junction of provincial administrative regions, the degree of spatial agglomeration is declining, and hot spots are transferred to the Bohai Rim and Yangtze River Delta regions.③ The factors with significant positive correlation with China's industrial resource pressure are total industrial assets, industrial added value and three industrial wastes average treatment rate, and the factors with significant negative correlation with China's industrial resource pressure are the number of industrial enterprises, labor productivity and the proportion of the output value of foreign-invested industrial enterprises in the total industrial output value. ④ The factors with significant positive correlation with China's industrial environmental pressure are the total industrial assets, and the output value of foreign-invested industrial enterprises in the total industrial output value, the factors with significant negative correlation with China's industrial environmental pressure are the three industrial wastes average treatment rate, and labor productivity. In order to meet the strategic goals of carbon peak and carbon neutralization on schedule, it is crucial to examine the effects and limitations of green finance on the green transformation of industry. This research utilizes the entropy method, the Global Malmquist–Luenberger technique, and panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2018 to estimate the extent of industrial green transformation and green finance development in each province. It builds static and dynamic panel models to experimentally examine the effect of green finance on industrial green transformation. After introducing environmental regulation (ER), this paper presents how ER influences the link between green finance and industrial green transformation. The research finds the following. (1) According to geographical differences in the growth of green finance and industrial green transformation, the economically developed east region is more advanced than the central and west regions, and the central region is more advanced than the west region. (2) Green finance has a significantly positive impact on industrial green transformation, and this positive influence has certain continuity and inertia. (3) Environmental regulation has a favorable impact on the link between green finance and industrial green transformation; specifically, a rise in the level of environmental regulation stimulates the process of green finance that boosts industrial green transformation. Production, living, and ecological space are three of the most important components in the rural living environment system. The interactions among the three spaces are outstanding in the rapidly urbanizing areas with a concentrated population and frequent production activities. It is very necessary to clarify the impact of the interactions on rural livability. Taking Lishui District of Nanjing in China as an example, a rural "Production-Living-Ecological Space" classification index system was built using land use and POI (Point of interest) data. Three spaces were identified comprehensively, according to the entropy weight, linear weighting, and spatial analysis function of ArcGIS. Then, an evaluation system of rural livability was established to consider the functions of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" and the interaction among them. The rural livability of each town was classified in 2010 and 2018. The levels of rural livability were also analyzed in the towns. A systematic analysis was made to clarify the influence of the interaction of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" on the evaluation of rural livability. The interactivity indicators were removed from the rural livability evaluation system. The livability scores were calculated without considering the interaction of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space". The results showed that: 1) The production space was dominant in the rural "Production-Living-Ecological Space" in 2010 and 2018, which was mostly distributed in the periphery of the living space. The ecological space was the second, which was clustered in many areas of the district. The living space was the smallest near the intersection of traffic roads. The composition and distribution of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" varied greatly in each town. The distribution of production, living, and ecological space roughly overlapped with that of arable land, rural settlements, and water and forest meadows. The area of rural living space generally increased. The newly increased living space was mainly concentrated in the middle of each town, especially in Yongyang, Shiqiu, and Zhetang. By contrast, the area of production space decreased, where Zhetang, Yongyang, and Shiqiu had the greatest decrease among the eight towns. 2) The overall level of rural livability was not high in 2010 and 2018, where the average score declined slightly in the eight years. The high and low livability areas were located in Hefeng and Baima Town in 2010, respectively, whereas, those were located in Yongyang and Dongping Town in 2018, respectively. Among them, Hefeng Town was ranked the first in the study area in 2010, in terms of livability levels, but Baima Town was ranked the last. Until 2018, Yongyang Town shared the highest livability score, whereas, Dongping Town was the lowest. The livability rank of Yongyang Town increased, while that of Dongping and Shiqiu Town decreased during the eight years. 3) The livability score of Zhetang Town was higher than that of Hefeng Town, whereas, the livability score of Baima Town was higher than that of Jingqiao Town, without considering the interaction among the "Production-Living-Ecological Space". It was exactly the opposite after considering the interaction, indicating more in line with local reality. Therefore, the interaction among the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" posed a certain influence on the livability of the countryside, indicating a new idea for the study of rural livability. Among the towns with "high" livability, Yongyang Town should maintain the integrity of the ecosystem and adhere to the innovation-driven development strategy for the modern industrial system. Hefeng Town should maintain ecological health to strengthen the construction of public facilities. Among the towns with "relatively high" livability, Zhetang Town should pay attention to the rational layout of production, living, and ecological space, in order to strengthen the construction and protection of ecological space. Honglan Town should focus on the industrial transformation and upgrading in the future construction, in order to reduce the negative impact of production space on the living and ecological space. Jingqiao Town with its "relatively low" livability should continue to introduce effective policies, and then reduce the negative impact of production and living space on ecological space for the better protection of water areas. Among the towns with "low" livability, Shiqiu Town should rationalize the production and living space layout, in order to reduce the pollution from production activities via the policy measures. Dongping Town should strengthen the construction of public facilities and roads, with an emphasis on the industrial transformation for better ecological environment protection. Baima Town should focus on the infrastructure to optimize the production and living space layout for the sound transportation system. Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework sets out key actions for biodiversity conservation worldwide in the coming period, including integrating biodiversity and its multiple values into economic and social activities. As a party to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), China has made unremitting efforts to promote the biodiversity mainstreaming, integrating biodiversity conservation into top-level national decision-making and major strategic planning, and integrating it into the policies, norms and assessment mechanisms of ecological environments, natural resources and other relevant industries. Different functional departments, scientific research institutions, enterprises, social organizations and other organizations have carried out extensive and in-depth researches based on multiple aspects of biodiversity conservation and management. Benchmark the objectives of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and refer the advanced experience of biodiversity mainstreaming practices in other countries, we discussed and analyzed the conceptual connotation of biodiversity mainstreaming, summarized the practice and stage results of biodiversity mainstreaming in China. Then focusing on different actors including governments, enterprises and the public, we propose the implementation path of promoting biodiversity mainstreaming in an all-round way for China in the new era, including: (1) To import a consistent action framework which is mitigation protection hierarchy with four steps, contains avoidance, mitigation, recovery, and offset; (2) To give play to the leading role of government governance, and to integrate biodiversity conservation into government governance systems and industrial development layout with the help of various planning and policy tools; (3) To support enterprises to take joint actions and internalize ecological and environmental hazards into business operations which can promote sustainable production and consumption; (4) To raise public awareness to promote broad participation in biodiversity conservation, establish a system of public participation in biodiversity conservation through various publicity and education actions, to guide the public to practice a green and low-carbon lifestyle, and to translate into real benefits of biodiversity and climate mitigation and improvement. By taking the above actions, we will strive to integrate biodiversity into the policy mechanisms of government departments at all levels and social production and life practices, so as to provide references for improving biodiversity governance decisions. An effective combination of resilience and efficiency will help to promote the high-quality development of the digital economy. In this paper, we use the entropy method, the Super-SBM model, and the Haken model to measure the digital economy resilience, digital economy efficiency, and their synergistic evolution mechanisms in 31 Chinese provinces and autonomous regions from 2013 to 2020, respectively. The results show that: (1) The resilience of the digital economy is the order parameter leading synergistic development, playing a prominent role in promoting the development of the digital economy from disorder to order. (2) Synergistic evolution has evolved from low-level to high-level, but it is in the primary stage as a whole, and the fluctuation of its development is not obvious, showing a unipolar development pattern. (3) There are significant regional differences in synergistic evolution, showing a polarization pattern, with the "Matthew effect" that the stronger the start the stronger the development. (4) Overall, the resilience and efficiency of the digital economy show a positive synergistic effect, but some provinces show a negative feedback mechanism that inhibits the orderly development of the system, there is a bias effect, and the development levels of the resilience and efficiency of the digital economy are mismatched. (5) The four paths that drive the synergistic evolution of resilience and efficiency in a high digital economy are the "Resilience Dominates Driven Path", the "Basic Driven Path", the "Innovation Driven Path", and the "Balanced Driven Path", respectively. In short, the synergistic evolution of the resilience and efficiency of the digital economy shows that the future development of the digital economy needs to cultivate endogenous momentum, pay attention to strengthening resilience in the process of continuing to build a diversified industrial system, and continuously improve the operational efficiency of the digital economy, in order to promote its high-quality development. The Capital Economic Circle (CEC) is one economic growth pole and occupies important position in China. However, imbalance of allocation of technological resources leads to heterogeneous industrial productivity and economic development in the CEC. To analyze and solve this problem, we combined input-output and network methods to explore structural defects of technology diffusion system of CEC and effective measures to promote industrial technology synergy and integrated development. Firstly, the principles of Multi-Regional Industrial Technology Flow Tree (MR-ITFT) modelling and methods were proposed. Secondly, the structural indexes and the effect indicators including technology spillover and absorption intensity, and spillover and absorption multiplier were designed based on MR-ITFT, which were applied to identify structural defects of industrial system and its effects on technology diffusion. The empirical research shows that heterization and polarization, imbalance of supply and demand, non-integrated vertical function, and centralization and convergence in industrial technology system are structural factors that interferes the circulation of technology flow, and further was reflected in the reduced, inverse and unstable structural effects. Contradiction between low return and high demand of technology investment results in an unsustainable circulation system of CEC. The Yellow River Basin is an important ecological function area and economic zone in China that faces the dual pressure of economic development and ecological protection. Industrial ecology designs industrial activities by imitating the ecosystem and would solve the dilemma in the development process of the Yellow River Basin. In this study, we evaluated the industrial ecology of 100 prefecture-level cities along the Yellow River Basin from 2003 to 2020 using the entropy weight method and analyzed their long-term spatial and temporal evolution trends. We also deconstructed the driving factors affecting the industrial ecology in the Yellow River Basin, regarding both internal and external aspects, using the coupled coordination model and the panel quantile model. We found the following: (1) The industrial ecology in the Yellow River Basin was slowly increasing in a "N"-type transformation trajectory, but the overall was still relatively low. (2) The slow improvement in ecosystem efficiency and the low coordination between the industrial system and the ecosystem are the main internal factors limiting the improvement in industrial ecology. (3) The population agglomeration, human capital accumulation, government guidance, and technology level are all important for improvements in industrial ecology in the Yellow River Basin. The impact of the financial level on industrial ecology in the Yellow River Basin was found to be negative. Therefore, it is necessary to take the correlation and coordination between the industrial system and the ecosystem as the main means and actively and positively promote the role of the external influencing factors to improve the industrial ecology in the Yellow River Basin. How to control industrial air pollution is an urgent policy problem to be solved. Through efficiency evaluation, we can test the implementation effect of the policy, to provide decision support for industrial development. China's provincial industrial system consists of production stage and emission reduction stage. Taking the number of industrial waste gas treatment facilities as a carry-over variable (i.e., connecting multiple periods), this study establishes a dynamic two-stage, slacks-based measure data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) model considering shared inputs to evaluate the operating efficiency of China's provincial industrial systems from 2011 to 2019. The results show that (1) The industrial waste gas treatment facilities (carry-over variables) have a significant impact on the overall efficiency and stage efficiency of the industrial system; (2) The average overall efficiency and average stage efficiency of the provincial industrial system have improved during 2011-2019, but they are still inefficient, and the inefficiency has certain geographical characteristics; (3) During the 12th Five Year Plan period (2011-2015), the average efficiency of the emission reduction stage was higher than that of the production stage, but the situation reversed during the 13th Five Year Plan period (2016-2019). Purpose: Despite the considerable research into China's industrial relation system, little attention has been focused on what do Chinese unions at the enterprise level do and how their daily work influences employees' work-related outcomes. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior, this paper aims to examine the impact of Chinese enterprise union practices on employees' change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior through the mediating roles of psychological safety, perceived insider status, and role breadth self-efficacy. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected from 450 employees at 45 unionized enterprises in China through a three-wave survey. Multilevel analyses were conducted to test the hypothesized effects. Findings: Chinese enterprise union practices positively predicted change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Critically, psychological safety and role breadth self-efficacy mediated the positive relationship between Chinese enterprise union practices and change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Originality/value: This study provides new evidence on the effectiveness of Chinese enterprise union practices from a perspective of employees' work-related outcomes. It also enriches the existing literature on antecedents of change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior and provides a "planned" perspective to understand the mechanism that underlies the relationship between Chinese enterprise union practices and change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. This paper aims to study the decoupling status and emission reduction potential of China's petrochemical industry from 1996 to 2019. Firstly, the IPCC method is used to calculate the CO2 emissions of the petrochemical industry in China, then the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method is used to identify the influencing factors of CO2 emissions, then the decoupling index is constructed to analyze the dependence of economic development on CO2 emissions, and finally the emission reduction potential model is established by using the influencing factors to reflect the CO2 emission reduction potential of the petrochemical industry. The results reveal that (1) the CO2 emissions can be divided into two stages of slow decline (1996–2000), (2015–2019), and one stage of rapid growth (2000–2015). (2) The energy intensity effect is the most effective factor to restrain CO2 emission, the economic growth effect is the key factor to promote CO2 emission. (3) From 1996 to 2019, there was a weak decoupling relationship between CO2 emission of petrochemical industry and economic development. Strong decoupling only occurred in 1996–2000 and 2015–2019. The CO2 emissions show only three decoupling score: I, II, and III. (4) CO2 mitigation occurred in four sub periods: 1996–2000, 2005–2010, 2010–2015, and 2015–2019. Therefore, the government should establish an energy-saving and environment-friendly industrial production system, intensify the use of clean energy, and optimize the labor force structure. It not only effectively strengthens the decoupling between the petrochemical industry and economic development, but also provides an empirical example for the carbon emission reduction and economic sustainable development of the petrochemical industry in other countries in the world. In today's industry development, the integration of manufacturing and logistics industries has received increasing attention from the international community. The Chinese government has set a strategic agenda for the deep integration and innovative development of logistics and manufacturing industries (DIIDLMI). However, it is still unclear what impact DIIDLMI has on the development of two industries. Especially with significant differences in resource endowments, it is interesting to see whether such impacts vary between coastal and inland regions. Therefore, this study focuses on the regional collaborative development mechanism and analyzes the performance of DIIDLMI by using the Spatial Durbin Model with provincial data in China. The analysis result indicates that, first, DIIDLMI has positive local effect and positive spatial spillover effect on digital intelligence technology development of the two industries, positive spatial spillover effect on low-carbon transformation and profit level of the logistics industry, positive local effect on low-carbon transformation of the manufacturing industry, and positive local effect on profit level of the two industries. Second, we also obtain some counterintuitive results, i.e., DIIDLMI has no local effect on low-carbon transformation of the logistics industry, no spatial spillover effect on low-carbon transformation and profit level of the manufacturing industry. Third, compared to coastal regions, DIIDLMI in inland regions has a more positive local effect on digital intelligence technology development of the logistics industry, a more positive spatial spillover effect on low-carbon transformation of the logistics industry, a more positive local effect on low-carbon transformation of the manufacturing industry, and a more positive local effect on profit level of the manufacturing industry. China's "Made in China (2025)" strategic plan aims to increase the industrial sector's ability to innovate independently. Cleaner production and green technology will also be used to build green industrial systems. To help achieve these goals, the Chinese government has implemented research and development (R&D) preferential policies. Over the years 2010–2020, this article examines how government subsidies and R&D spending will affect China's energy-intensive enterprises' energy efficiency using the CS-ARDL approach. It also evaluates the effectiveness of economic growth, urbanization, and financial resources on energy efficiency. The outcome reveals that R&D expenditures and economic growth contribute to energy efficiency. Likewise, the findings of urbanization, financial resources, and government subsidies are inversely associated with energy efficiency. Moreover, the panel causality test results show the bi-directional association between urbanization and energy efficiency, government subsidies and energy efficiency, and economic growth and energy efficiency. Likewise, the one-way causal association from R&D expenditures to energy efficiency and from financial resources to energy efficiency. China has put great efforts into air pollution control over the past years and recently committed to its most ambitious climate target. Cost and benefit analysis has been widely used to evaluate the control policies in terms of past performance, future reduction potential, and direct and indirect impacts. To understand the cost and benefit analysis for air pollution control in China, we conducted a bibliometric review of more than 100 studies published over the past two decades, including the current research progress, most commonly adopted methods, and core findings. The control target in cost and benefit analysis has shifted in three stages, from individual and primary pollution control, moving to joint prevention of multiple and secondary pollutants, and then towards synergistic control of air pollution and carbon. With the expansion of the research scope, the integrated assessment model has gradually demonstrated the necessity for long-term ex-anti policy simulation, especially for dealing with complex factors. To ensure long-term air quality, climate, public health, and sustainable economic development, substantial evidence from published studies has suggested that China needs to continue its efforts in the upstream adjustment of the energy system and industrial structure with multi-regional and -sector collaboration. This cost and benefit review paper provides decision-makers with the fundamental information and knowledge gaps in air pollution control strategies in China, and direction for facing future challenges. Using a relational two-stage network data envelopment analysis (DEA) model considering undesirable outputs, this paper evaluates both the process and system performances of industrial environmental governance in China's 30 provincial-level regions during 1998–2015. Furthermore, this is the first study to apply the spatial econometric models with a geographical distance matrix to investigate the local and spatial spillover effects of environmental regulations on heterogeneous environmental governance performance (i.e. clean production and end-of-pipe treatment performances). The results show that clean production performance is generally higher than end-of-pipe treatment performance, but both performances present a declining trend during the sample period. The estimation results of the spatial econometric models confirm the Porter hypothesis market-based environmental regulations improve local clean production performance. By contrast, we also find that command-and-control environmental regulations improve end-of-pipe treatment performance but curb clean production performance, and exert a "race-to-the-top" effect on local governments. Since China's reform and opening up, the domestic economic structure has undergone significant changes, and the industrial system has gradually developed to the tertiary industry. As the core of the tertiary sector and service industry, tourism has, therefore, entered a stage of vigorous development. At the same time, in the context of promoting new-type urbanization, industrial parks created by the theory of industry-urban integration have entered a new stage of development. Due to the respective characteristics of industrial parks and tourism, tourism industrial parks with comprehensive coverage and a strong driving ability have gradually formed under the promotion of industry-urban integration. As a new carrier of the tourism industry, tourism industrial parks are being built all over China. However, due to the differences in the development level of each region, how to improve the competitiveness in the construction of tourism industrial parks has become a problem worth studying. Based on the diamond model in the competitiveness theory, this paper first improves the model according to the actual situation and constructs the competitiveness evaluation index system of tourism industrial parks from the perspective of new-type urbanization. Second, the weight of each index is calculated using the Analytic Network Process (ANP), and then the competitiveness evaluation model is constructed by the matter-element method. Finally, the evaluation model is verified by taking the Suining city Tourism Industrial Park as an example, and corresponding improvement suggestions are put forward for this case. At the same time, the feedback from this evaluation process also provides a scientific method and theoretical basis for enhancing the competitiveness of tourism industrial parks and provides a new idea for the future development of such parks. As pointed out in the Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the next five years (2022–2027) will be crucial for beginning to build a modern socialist country in all respects. Firstly, the next five years will be a period of historical transition in the central task of the CPC. The central task of the CPC will be to realize the Second Centenary Goal of building China into a great modern socialist country in all respects. At this crucial stage for getting our efforts off to a good start, China should understand and pursue the Five-Sphere Integrated Plan to advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts through a Chinese path to modernization. Secondly, the next five years will be a period of deep reform in which strategic opportunities, risks and challenges are concurrent. Alongside a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation well underway, the new principal contradiction facing Chinese society, a historical transition in the central task of the CPC, and a shift in the international balance of power, profound and complex changes are taking place in China’s internal and external environment for development. Uncertainties and unforeseen factors are rising and must be dealt with appropriately. Thirdly, the next five years will be a key period of achieving China’s overall development objectives for 2035. It is a paramount stage of meeting the 14th Five-Year Plan goals, formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan goals, and realizing Chinese modernization by 2035. China should uphold the CPC’s overall leadership, follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, apply a people-centered development philosophy, remain committed to deepening reform and opening up, and carry forward our fighting spirit. Fourthly, the next five years will be a crucial period of accelerating the creation of a new pattern of development and pursuing high-quality development. Chinese modernization should be advanced through a series of strategic initiatives, such as building a high-standard socialist market economy, modernizing the industrial system, propelling rural revitalization across the board, promoting coordinated regional development, and boosting high-standard opening up. Fifthly, the next five years will be an impact period of unprecedented downward pressure on the national economy under various factors and risks beating expectations. In order to achieve the 14th Five-Year Plan goals and the overall development objectives by 2035, it is necessary to defuse the threefold pressure composed of increasing demand shrinkage, supply shocks and flagging market expectations, as well as intensifying potential risks. To accomplish the main objectives and tasks for the next five years, it is necessary to observe objective laws, apply the new development philosophy, continue to pursue economic development as central task, adopt system-based thinking, take steady steps to sustain progress, and promote high-quality development in a scientific and effective manner. China is in a critical period of economic restructuring and optimization, and the vigorous development of the digital economy plays a vital role in the transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure. Using the panel data of 249 prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2018, this study empirically investigates the relationship and mechanism between digital economy and industrial structure upgrading. The results show that the digital economy significantly promotes the upgrading of the industrial structure, and this conclusion is still valid after robustness tests such as selecting historical data as instrumental variables. The analysis of the mechanism of action shows that the improvement of labor efficiency and the promotion of technology spillover are the important mechanisms of the digital economy to promote industrial structure upgrading. Finally, the study of regional differences shows that the eastern region has the most obvious promotion effect of digital economy development, the central region is the second, and the western region has the least impact. The research here promotes the understanding of the motivation of industrial structure upgrading and the effect, mechanism, and regional differences of the digital economy enabling the development of a modern industrial system. This paper designs a recommendation algorithm for innovation and entrepreneurship talent training model based on potential Dirichlet distribution (LDA) theme model and alternating least squares (ALS) collaborative filtering, which not only improves the accuracy of the recommendation results of talent training model but also improves the accuracy of the recommendation results of talent training model. On the premise of stable recommendation, the diversity of recommendation results has increased, which meets the needs of innovative and entrepreneurial talent training of higher vocational finance and economics majors under the background of "great wisdom and cloud" and provides a certain reference for the practical teaching reform of higher vocational finance and economics majors in China. Improving the coordination between technological innovation in high-tech industries and regional economic development is an important measure for all provinces (cities) to implement the innovation-driven development strategy. Based on the analysis of the mechanism of high-tech industrial technological innovation and regional economic development, this paper constructs the measurement index system of high-tech industrial technological innovation and regional economic development, and the chain network DEA model, entropy weight method, coupling coordination model, and exploratory spatial data analysis technology are comprehensively used to empirically analyze the technological innovation efficiency of high-tech industries, regional economic development level, and the coupling coordination relationship between them and the spatiotemporal evolution trend in 24 provinces (cities) of China from 2009 to 2018. The results show that (1) there are significant differences in the average level of technological innovation efficiency of high-tech industry in each stage, which is the most prominent in the technology research and development stage, followed by the industrialization stage, and finally in the technology transformation stage. (2) The degree of coupling and coordination between high-tech industrial technological innovation and regional economic development is increasing year by year, which is in the adaptation stage of high-tech industrial technological innovation and regional economic development. (3) From the perspective of spatial pattern, there is a positive spatial autocorrelation between the coupling coordination degree of high-tech industrial technological innovation and regional economic development. The number of provinces (cities) with low coupling coordination degree is much larger than that with high coupling coordination degree, showing a serious imbalance of regional heterogeneity and forming two spatial aggregation areas of "high-high" diffusion effect and "low-low" low-speed growth. Public health highlights "public utilities," emphasizes the attributes of public goods and services, and aims to clarify the responsibility of government leadership; highlighting "maintaining health equity" aims to make it clear that public health not only guarantees health but also focuses on fairness; the purpose extends to "maintaining social stability and development," emphasizing that the function of public health is not only to protect health; emphasizing that public health is "one science" and aims to call for respect for the laws of science and the cross-integration of medicine with other natural and social sciences; and emphasizing that public health "focuses on practice" makes it clear that strengthening the implementation of various policies and measures is the key to achieving purpose and values. The development of the entertainment and sports industry is directly related to the development, stability, and people's welfare of the country. Under the common influence of various factors, such as the increasing level of social economy and technology, the growth of people's leisure time, and the change in social consumption concept, the development of China's entertainment and sports industry has shown a certain scale effect, social correlation effect, and employment effect. However, due to the continuous advancement of the development process of China's entertainment and sports industry, some problems have emerged, such as uneven development speed, small industrial scale, low industrial technology level, lack of service commodity types, unreasonable market resource allocation, and serious shortage of professionals in relevant fields. Thus, it limits the development process of China's entertainment and sports industry and is not conducive to the ecological development of China's entertainment and sports industry. On this basis, the state has formulated the guiding opinions on improving China's leisure sports policies and regulations: adjusting the method, intensity, and direction of the state's direct financial investment; strengthening the support for social funds and sports clubs; reducing the price and reducing the cost of entertainment; and establishing a reasonable industrial integrity system and standards; a government supervision and performance evaluation system has been initially formed. It aims to highlight that all aspects of society should also serve health while enjoying health; comprehensive policies are the guarantee for promoting the benign operation of the system. The implementation of the rural revitalization strategy opens a new historical chapter for alleviating relative poverty and dealing with issues related to ‘agriculture, rural areas, and farmers.’ Industrial prosperity is the primary task and fundamental guarantee of rural revitalization. By studying the ways of evaluating industrial prosperity, the types of industries, and their key restrictive factors, this article explored the path to achieving industrial prosperity in the poverty alleviation areas in central and western China. Firstly, the article constructed a comprehensive benefit evaluation system for industrial prosperity, including four dimensions of political benefit, social benefit, economic benefit, and ecological benefit, and 12 specific indicators. These benefits should be considered no matter which type of industry is developed. Secondly, based on the comprehensive evaluation system of industrial prosperity, the AHP-FCE method was used to evaluate different types of industries, and the results based on the scores of comprehensive benefits were as follows: labor-intensive industries > rural tourism industry > characteristic handicraft industry > characteristic planting industry > characteristic breeding industry. At the same time, from the perspectives of theory, practice, and development space, the feasibility of developing labor- intensive industries in these poverty alleviation areas was supported. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that the rural areas in the poverty alleviation areas in central and western China should seek development beyond agricultural activities and establish industrial parks in the center of townships (towns) to undertake labor-intensive industries transferred from the eastern coastal areas. Finally, this study selected 16 potential factors restricting the development of labor-intensive industries in these areas from the four dimensions: development foundation, development concept, development elements, and development environment, and used the DEMATEL- ISM method to extract key constraints, including infrastructure, public services, endogenous power, and business environment. It was found that solving these key constraints is the premise of industrial prosperity in the poverty alleviation areas in central and western China. In recent years, the global booming of the digital economy has become a booster for China’s high-quality development. In the digital economy era, the digital upgrading of the industrial structure has become obvious. Based on a grey relational entropy model and dissipative structure theory, our empirical study reveals that the impact of the digital economy on the industrial structure varies over time. Since 2013, the digital economy has become an engine for China’s continuous industrial structure upgrading. By comparing the influence of the development of digital industrialization and the industrial digitization on industrial structure upgrading, we find that the former has a foundational leading role in the upgrading of the industrial structure, but the latter has a stronger impact. Therefore, the digital economy is an important driving force being able to lead the future upgrading of the industrial structure. China should rapidly promote the construction of new digital infrastructure and implement strategic spatial layouts for the development of digital industrialization while concurrently accelerating the industrial digitization. This will enable China’s economy to achieve higher-quality, more efficient and more secure development in the postepidemic era. The liberal theory of industrialism is one of the chief political theories impacting education. Such a framework associates academic achievement directly with employability and establishes education's dominant position in mediating social mobility. However, Chinese graduates are confronted with the broken promises of higher education, since college credentials are no longer regarded as 'golden tickets' that guarantee decent jobs or high social status. Therefore, this paper establishes a critical framework for analysing the liberal theory of industrialism. By referencing to empirical research, the current study provides an in‐depth discussion from the national perspective and offers explanations from both quantitative and qualitative evidence. The study suggests that the implementation of the theory in egalitarian societies has been largely compromised with regard to meritocratic selection. Meanwhile, the theory relies on a veil of ignorance, for it assumes that people would have a unanimous perception regarding social status. In both respects, it is argued to be incompatible with the contemporary Chinese context.
