Despite the growing prevalence of the China threat discourse, its extensive historical complexity is seldom fully explored in existing academic literature. The article unitizes the enormous data of Google Ngram Viewer to track the evolution of the China threat discourse among American elites over the last seven decades. This article argues that understanding the China threat discourse requires a dynamic perspective that considers historical context and demonstrates that American elites' perception of China has shifted from ideological and military hostility to concerns over China's rising economic power and challenges that China's political system might pose. The article suggests that the drivers underlying the China threat discourse are historically contingent and evolve alongside changes in China's national strength and the perception of China's politics, highlighting the significance of both material and ideational drivers in shaping the China threat discourse. Truck overweight is an important cause of truck safety accidents, which has been persistent in the course of more than 30 years of the road freight market reform in mainland China, despite persistent efforts to stem it. In this paper, the accident causation mechanism of truck overweight is investigated based on accident cases. The cross-sectional microscopic formation mechanism of truck overweight phenomenon among truck-related agents, the longitudinal macroscopic evolution process of truck overweight phenomenon and some emerging trends in China are analyzed with the hope to fully reveal the various causes of truck overweight. Practical measures are finally proposed to steadily strengthen truck overweight control. This article investigates the politics behind the technologies used in Soochow Creek's environmental management during the 1920s–1970s. The management of Soochow Creek was quietly introduced in the 1920s. Under the pattern of "One City of Three Governments", the Nanking National Government did not adopt opinions from either the British or the American concessions. With limited resources for governance, the Communist Party of China (CPC) regime transformed an environmental governance project into one designed to win the public mind. The case of Soochow Creek confirms that even in Shanghai, the most modernized city in China, not only did Western technology have little influence on regional contamination governance before 1949 but also the Soviet model was consistently excluded from the Tu (local approach) due to its Yang (foreign approach). Although large-scale mass movements rarely worked to address river pollution, they did strategically guarantee a stable government under continuous environmental contamination. The findings also indicate that the adoption of foreign or local approaches was as much a political issue as a technical issue in the context of modern China. • Local approaches played a key role in the environmental governance of Soochow Creek during the 1920s–1970s. • Institutional and political context greatly influenced the pollution control of Soochow Creek. • The adoption of the local or foreign approaches was a political issue in modern China.
