Flexible education is considered the primary function of e-learning, however, empirical evidence during the COVID-19 pandemic has also demonstrated that students may seek emotional comforts in e-learning to alleviate their negative emotions. This study aims to provide a holistic view of the antecedents of college students' e-learning acceptance by integrating social support theory with the technology acceptance model. Specifically, drawing upon social support theory, this study adopted perceived educational support and perceived emotional support as two driving factors and examined their influences on students' continuous intention in e-learning. The model was empirically validated using survey data from 512 college respondents in China during the first wave of the pandemic. Our results suggested that while perceived educational support exerts a major influence on e-learning acceptance, perceived emotional support also has an important role to play. Besides, the analytics results suggested that the two facets of support had different influencing patterns: perceived educational support has a positive and significant relationship with both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, whereas perceived emotional support solely has a significant relationship with perceived ease of use. Additionally, compared with the prior studies, the effect size ([beta]) between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness is larger in the present study (COVID-19 context). These findings stress the need to better understand the mechanism by which social support influences college students' e-learning acceptance and to make use of various kinds of social supports to enhance perceived ease of use (e.g. human-computer interface), promote perceived usefulness, and ultimately motivate more students' continuance intention in e-learning.

Lysimachia foenum-graecum Hance (Primulaceae) is a medicinal plant used for cold, pain, ascariasis, etc., in China. Triterpenoid saponins have been found to be the main components of this genus. In this work, a pair of oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins with an unprecedented 4/5/6 fused tricyclic skeleton, foegraecumoside O (1) and foegraecumoside P (2) were isolated from the butanol fraction of the aerial parts of L. foenum-graecum. Their structures were determined using chemical methods and extensive spectroscopic analyses, along with quantum chemical calculations. Compound 2 displayed moderate cytotoxicity against HepG2, MGC-803, T24, NCI-H460, A549, and A549/CDDP (drug-resistant lung-cancer cell line) with IC50 at 12.4–19.2 μM in an MTT assay, comparing with the positive control doxorubicin, which had IC50 at 0.53–4.92 μM, but was inactive for A549/CDDP. Specimens of Crinipellis and Marasmius (Marasmiaceae) collected from Beijing, North China, were studied by morphological and molecular methods. Phylogenetic analyses were performed separately for the two genera based on ITS sequence data. Two new species, C. deutziae and M. pinicola, were found, and C. rhizomaticola was reported from China for the first time. Crinipellis deutziae is characterized by small basidiocarps, large and variably shaped basidiospores measuring 8.8–11 × 7.5–9.5 µm, the presence of both cheilocystidia and pleurocystidia, and growing on Deutzia parviflora. Marasmius pinicola is characterized by small basidiocarps, cylindrical, reniform to phaseoliform basidiospores measuring 6–8 × 3.5–4.2 µm, often capitate cheilocystidia, and pleurocystidia, and growing on fallen leaves of Pinus tabuliformis. Selenium (Se) is a beneficial microelement for humans, and its varying abundances and shortages have attracted widespread concern. The accumulation process of soil Se is quite complicated, being controlled by multiple factors. However, the influence mechanism of soil properties, climate, and topographic conditions on Se distribution is still unclear in Se-deficient areas. For this study, we collected 2804 samples from cropland soil to assess the levels of Se and the factors that influence those levels in Se-deficient areas of southwestern China. The Se content in this area (0.17 mg/kg) was less than the mean value of China as a whole (0.29 mg/kg). Moran's I index and a random forest (RF) model showed that higher Se levels were mostly observed in the southern and northern sections of the area we studied. The RF model had excellent performance in predicting soil Se content, with an accuracy of 64%. The use of Shapley additive explanations indicated that soil organic matter (SOM) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) were the critical factors determining Se distribution. The areas with high SOM and MAP showed high Se levels. The information obtained from this work can provide guidance for agricultural planning in Se-deficient areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The present study aimed to reveal the spatial distribution of soil nutrients in southwest China and to quantitatively evaluate the effect of environmental factors on spatial variability of soil nutrients under different cropping systems. Methods: Semivariogram, random forest (RF), and partial dependence plots (PDP) were applied to investigate the relationships between environmental factors and soil nutrients variability. A total of 142 samples were collected from topsoil under rice and maize cropping systems in southwest China. Results: Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in the topsoil of the study area were higher than their corresponding background and geochemical baseline values of China. Semivariogram analysis indicated that SOC and TN have weak spatial dependence, and TP has strong spatial dependence. The soil nutrient contents were predicted well by the RF models. The mean absolute error, root mean square error, and coefficient of determination were 0.14–0.47 g/kg, 0.19–3.67 g/kg, and 0.30–0.46, respectively. For different soil nutrients, the relative importance of environmental variables varied greatly. Cropping system, topographic wetness index (TWI), and slope were critical factors that controlled SOC variability. Cropping system, TWI, and mean annual temperature explained most variation of TN. Soil pH, aspect, and cropping system were dominant factors affecting TP variability. Conclusion: In this study, SOC and TN had weak spatial autocorrelation, while TP had strong spatial autocorrelation. Meanwhile, cropping system and topography had greatly impact on the variability of soil nutrients, which should be considered in formulating agricultural measures in the future. Peniophora is an old corticioid genus, from which two small satellite genera, Dendrophora and Duportella, were derived based on morphological differences. Molecular systematic studies showed that they belong to Peniophoraceae, Russulales, but the inter- and intra-generic phylogenetic relationships are still unclear. Moreover, the species diversity of this group in subtropical and tropical Asia has not been sufficiently investigated and studied. In this study, we carried out an intensive taxonomic and phylogenetic study on Peniophora sensu lato based on analyses of concatenated ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS, Internal Transcribed Spacer) and 28S (D1–D2 domains of nuc 28S rDNA) sequence data of all available species worldwide. In the phylogenetic trees, species of Peniophora s. l. (sensu lato) including types of Peniophora s.s. (sensu stricto), Dendrophora and Duportella were interspersed within a strongly supported clade. It means that the morphological delimitations of the three genera are not reliable, and they should be regarded as a large genus. As a result, eight species of Duportella were transferred to Peniophora, although five of them have not been sequenced. Four new distinct lineages, corresponding to Peniophora cremicolor, P. major, P. shenghuae and P. vietnamensis spp. nov., were recovered in the trees. Peniophora taiwanensis is treated as a later synonym of P. malaiensis based on morphological and molecular evidence. Duportella renispora is excluded from Peniophoraceae, because BLAST results of the ITS and 28S sequences of the holotype showed that it is closely related to Amylostereum. Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the four new species, and an identification key is given for all 25 species of Peniophora in China. Purpose: Despite the huge potential of social media, its functionality and impact for enhanced risk communication remain unclear. Drawing on dialogic theory by integrating both "speak from power" and "speak to power" measurements, the article aims to propose a systematic framework to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach: The impact of social media on risk communication is measured by the correlation between "speak from power" and "speak to power" levels, where the former primarily spoke to two facets of the risk communication process – rapidness and attentiveness, and the latter was benchmarked against popularity and commitment. The framework was empirically validated with data relating to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) risk communication in 25,024 selected posts on 17 official provincial Weibo accounts in China. Findings: The analysis results suggest the relationship between the "speak from power" and "speak to power" is mixed rather than causality, which confirms that neither the outcome-centric nor the process-centric method alone can render a full picture of government–public interconnectivity. Besides, the proposed interconnectivity matrix reveals that two provinces have evidenced the formation of government–public mutuality, which provides empirical evidence that dialogic relationships could exist in social media during risk communication. Originality/value: The authors' study proposed a prototype framework that underlines the need that the impact of social media on risk communication should and must be assessed through a combination of process and outcome or interconnectivity. The phylogenetic analyses of the family Irpicaceae were carried out based on a complete global sampling. The dataset that included concatenated ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and nrLSU sequences of 67 taxa of Irpicaceae from around the world was subjected to the maximum likelihood analyses and Bayesian inference. In the phylogenetic tree, species from 14 genera were distributed in nine clades, among which five genera— Irpex, Phanerochaetella, Byssomerulius, Cytidiella , and Meruliopsis , received high support values. The genus Efibula was shown to be paraphyletic and four subclades could be recognized, while Phanerochaete allantospora, Leptoporus mollis , and several species from Ceriporia and Candelabrochaete formed a large clade with relatively strong support. Based on the molecular and morphological evidence, seven new corticioid species — Candelabrochaete guangdongensis, Efibula grandinosa, E. hainanensis, E. shenghuae, E. taiwanensis, Irpex alboflavescens , and Phanerochaetella sinensis , were revealed from the materials mostly from East Asia. The monotypic genus Flavodontia , newly described from southwestern China, is regarded as a later synonym of Irpex , and the new combination I. rosea is proposed. In addition, Phanerochaetella queletii is proposed for a taxon first described from Italy and newly recorded from China; Phanerochaete jose-ferreirae from Portugal is determined to be a later synonym. Descriptions and illustrations of the new species and the newly combined taxa are presented, and morphological comparisons for the known species of Efibula and Phanerochaetella are provided. Deeply investigating the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI), fiscal expenditure and green total-factor productivity (GTFP) is beneficial to formulating effective policies to promote the high-quality development in China. Based on theoretical mechanism analysis, with panel data of China's mainland 30 provinces during 2003–2017, this paper utilizes spatial econometric model to empirically explore the effects of FDI, fiscal expenditure and their interaction item on the growth of GTFP in China. The results show that FDI significantly promote the growth of the local and its neighboring GTFP, and both fiscal expenditure and the interaction between FDI and fiscal expenditure exert significantly negative effects on the growth of GTFP in the local and its neighboring regions. A series of robustness checks and the endogeneity test can ensure the reliability of these results. In addition, great heterogeneity can be found across China's different regions in the relationship between FDI, fiscal expenditure and GTFP. The conclusions suggest that it is necessary to give fully play to the synergy between FDI and fiscal expenditure and formulate regionally targeted policies to improve GTFP and promote high-quality development in China. A catastrophic landslide occurred in Xinmo village, Maoxian County, China, on June 24, 2016. The landslide destroyed the whole village and caused 10 deaths, and 73 people were reported to be missing. In this study, the contributions of historical earthquakes to rock damage and progressive deformation are the main focus. A detailed field investigation revealed that historical earthquakes seriously damaged the rock mass in the source area, and there were five macrocracks in this area before the landslide. The landslide was initiated along the cracks and foliation plane of the phyllite under long-term gravity. The rock damage induced by historical earthquakes was tested by uniaxial cyclic loading tests. The results indicate that the damage in the phyllite induced by earthquakes is significantly greater than that to slate and metamorphic sandstone. Moreover, the static loading after earthquakes can trigger the long-term deformation of phyllite, and it is accelerated with the incremental damage in the phyllite. Finally, catastrophic failure was triggered when the phyllite was in a significantly damaged state. As a result, the joint influence of historical earthquakes and long-term gravity loading contributed to the progressive deformation of the Xinmo landslide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An in-depth study of the phylogeny and taxonomy of the corticioid genus Phlebiopsis (Phanerochaetaceae) was conducted. Phylogenetic analyses of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and nrLSU sequences demonstrated that Phlebiopsis is a strongly supported clade which is distinct from its sister clades of Phaeophlebiopsis , Hapalopilus , and Rhizochaete. Two genera, Australohydnum and Hjortstamia , are reduced to synonyms under Phlebiopsis as generic type species A. griseofuscescens and H. friesii , respectively, are embedded in the Phlebiopsis clade. Twenty-four lineages are resolved in the ITS phylogenetic tree of Phlebiopsis , including six new taxa, viz. P. albescens , P. brunnea , P. cylindrospora , P. magnicystidiata , P. membranacea and P. sinensis , from Sri Lanka and China. Five new combinations, viz. Phaeophlebiopsis mussooriensis , Phlebiopsis bambusicola , P. dregeana , P. griseofuscescens and P. novae-granatae , are proposed. Phlebiopsis crassa is a morphological species complex with three distinct lineages. Phlebiopsis lamprocystidiata is determined to be a later synonym of P. darjeelingensis. The new taxa are described, illustrated, and compared and contrasted to morphologically similar species. Background: Rice paddy wetlands may serve as a nutrient source or sink in agricultural ecosystems. However, the pattern of nutrient loss on a watershed scale is not clear. A year-round on-site observation study based on 6-h intervals was conducted. Rainfall, temperature, runoff nutrient concentrations, and adjacent stream water samples were automatically monitored to uncover the temporal changes in the runoff losses of the predominant nutrient proxies (total N and total P) from a typical rice-planting area (120 ha) in the Yangtze river delta region of China. Results: A high total N concentration in the rice-planting area was observed during the rice-planting season; however, significant fluctuation in the total P was evident throughout the year. The Δtotal N (drainage minus stream) parameter showed negative values with a mean of −0.25 mg L−1, while Δtotal P showed positive values with a mean of 0.06 mg L−1. The annual average N and P runoff from paddy field were 11.6 kg ha−1 and 1.5 kg ha−1, respectively. The window phases for the total N loss were mainly concentrated in the rice-growing season. However, the window phase for the total P loss was more dispersive throughout the year. No apparent relationships were found between rainfall and N and P concentrations by self-organizing map analysis. Conclusions: The high-resolution monitoring, in this study, suggested that nutrient loss loading rather than nutrient concentration was strongly related to surface runoff Therefore, fertilization before high-intensity rainfall should be avoided to mitigate the nutrient runoff losses and maintain the rice wetland eco-function. Intervening in college students' environmental behavior is crucial not only to counter the increasing decline in their engagement in pro-environmental actions but also to facilitate a transition toward a more environmentally friendly lifestyle in the future. This study investigates the impact of a common policy instrument, financial incentives, in intervening to promote pro-environmental behavior among college students. Our specific focus is on how financial incentives directly influence behavior and their moderating role on three types of norms (moral norms, injunctive norms, and descriptive norms). The proposed model is empirically tested on 408 college students from four cities in China regarding their waste recycling behavior. Findings suggest that behavior is predominantly influenced by perceived behavioral control, attitude, and moral norms. Financial incentives are found to be insignificantly related to either intention or behavior and may potentially have an undermining effect on the relationship between moral norms and behavior. The degradation of chlorpyrifos (CP) by an endophytic bacterial strain (HJY) isolated from Chinese chives (Allium tuberosumRottl. ex Spreng) was investigated. Strain HJY was identified asSphingomonassp. based on morphological, physiological, and biochemical tests and a 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Approximately 96% of 20 mg L−1CP was degraded by strain HJY over 15 days in liquid minimal salts medium (MSM). The CP degradation rate could also be increased by glucose supplementation. The optimal conditions for the removal of 20 mg L−1CP by strain HJY in MSM were 2% inoculum density, pH 6.0, and 30–35°C. The CP degradation rate constant and half-life were 0.2136 ± 0.0063 d−1and 3.2451 ± 0.0975 d, respectively, under these conditions, but were raised to 0.7961 ± 0.1925 d−1and 0.8707 ± 0.3079 d with 1% glucose supplementation. The detection of metabolic products and screening for degrading genes indicated thatO,O-diethylO-3,5,6-trichloropyridinol was the major degradation product from CP, while it was likely that some functional genes were undetected and the mechanism responsible for CP degradation by strain HJY remained unknown. Promoting lifestyle change is considered a low-cost and effective solution to address the detrimental impacts of human activity on the ocean environment. However, the prevailing study may fall short of offering nuanced insights into how to encourage such change: empirical evidence on how to foster behavioral changes in the ocean environment context remains limited. To address this gap, this study takes the lead in proposing a model that integrates ocean literacy and two incentives with the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to dissect individuals' ocean-friendly behavioral intentions. The model is empirically validated through responses from 181 college students in three cities in China. The results of the multivariable analysis highlight that promoting ocean literacy is significantly and positively related to ocean-friendly behavioral inattention. In addition, the two incentives have demonstrated different influential mechanisms: for the high-attitude group, psychological recognition is more effective, whereas, for the low-attitude group, material rewards are most effective. These findings highlight that enhancing ocean literacy among college students is critical, while it is also necessary to provide diversified incentives relating to differences in attitudes to the ocean among individuals to promote behavioral change in more ocean-friendly forms. These areas also offer strong carbon sequestration and storage capacity. However, human activities and climate change have led to an ongoing decline in wetland areas. As an important wetland reserve in China, the coastal wetlands of Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, bring together a great number of water resources, land resources, biological resources, landscape resources, mineral resources, energy resources, and many other resources. However, in recent years, the coastal wetlands of Yancheng have also faced a continuous reduction in area. In this study, an integrated model of the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm and multi-criteria evaluation-cellular automata-Markov (MCE-CA-Markov) model was designed to determine the importance of the driving factors of landscape pattern change and predict the landscape pattern of coastal wetlands in 2025, based on the analysis of landscape pattern changes in 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020 in Yancheng coastal wetlands, Jiangsu Province. The results showed that the landscape configuration of coastal wetlands in Yancheng changed significantly during 2005–2020. The total natural wetland landscape area declined steadily over that 15-year span, showing a total decrease of 2.971 × 10 4 ha; on the contrary, the artificial wetlands increased. The analysis of the driving factors of wetland damage showed that gross domestic product (GDP), distance to roads, and average precipitation were the key factors. Based on this model, the natural wetland landscape of Yancheng's coastal wetlands is predicted to decline sharply in 2025, and the wetland salt marsh vegetation will be extensively converted to aquaculture and agricultural land. Constructed land is predicted to increase significantly, and the trend of urban expansion is obvious. The study concludes with practical suggestions for the sustainable development and ecological conservation of the Yancheng coastal wetland ecosystem based on the predicted scenario. Two new species, Vararia bispora and V. montana collected from southern China, are described and illustrated based on morphological characters. Vararia bispora is characterized by cinnamon-buff to yellowish brown basidiocarps, clamped generative hyphae, ventricose gloeocystidia, 2-sterigmata basidia, and large fusiform to cylindrical basidiospores that are negative in Melzer's reagent. Vararia montana is characterized by small pulvinate basidiocarps, clamped generative hyphae, rather strongly dextrinoid dichohyphae, and broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with a peculiar beak-like extension, and without reactions in Melzer's reagent. In addition, V. ambigua and V. amphithallica are reported from China for the first time, and descriptions and illustrations are also provided for these two species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amylostereum orientale S. H. He & Hai J. Li on Cunninghamia lanceolata is described from China as a new species, and A. areolatum is reported for the first time from China. Amylostereum orientale is very similar to A. laevigatum in mor phology, but the former has distinctly ellipsoid basidiospores and the host is a plant native in China. Representatives of the new taxon form a distinct clade in the phylogenetic tree inferred from the analysis of ITS rDNA sequences. Hymenochaete rhododendricola sp. nov. and Hymenochaete quercicola sp. nov. are described from Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet), southwestern China. Hymenochaete rhododendricola is distinct in the genus by its large and heavily enmeshed setae, and growing on dead branches of Rhododendron. Hymenochaete quercicola differs from other species by its smooth or tuberculate hymenophore, presence of a cortex, relatively large and oblong-ellipsoid basidiospores, and living on dead branches of Quercus. BACKGROUND: Hypertension-induced renal damage is a serious and complex condition that has not been effectively treated by conventional blood pressure-lowering drugs. Tengdan capsule (TDC) is a China FDA-approved compound herbal medicine for treating hypertension; however, its chemical basis and pharmacological efficacy have not been fully investigated in a preclinical setting. METHODS: High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to identify and quantify the major chemical components of TDC extracted from ultrapure water. Adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and age/sex-matched Wistar Kyoto normotensive rats (WKY) were both treated with TDC, losartan, or saline for one month, and their blood pressure (BP) was monitored at the same time by tail-cuff BP system. Biochemical indexes such as urine creatinine (CRE) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were determined. Kidney tissue sections were examined with (H&E), and Masson staining to evaluate the pathological effect of TDC on SHR's kidneys. After TDC treatment, the differentially expressed proteins in the kidneys of SHR were identified by the TMT-based quantitative proteomics analysis, which may provide the targets and possible mechanisms of TDC action. In addition, Western blot analysis, RT-qPCR, and ELISA assays were carried out to further verify the proteomics findings. Finally, two different models involving in vitro renal injuries were established using human kidney HEK293 cells; and the molecular mechanism of TDC kidney protection was demonstrated. RESULTS: Seven chemical compounds, namely Notoginsenoside R1, Ginsenoside RG1, Ginsenoside Re, Ginsenoside Rb1, Sodium Danshensu, Protocatechualdehyde, and Salvianolic acid B, were identified and quantified from the water-soluble extracts of TDC by HPLC. In vivo study using rats showed that TDC effectively reduced BP, BUN, and CRE levels and attenuated renal fibrosis in SHR, and ameliorated damage to the kidneys. Proteomics and subsequent bioinformatics analyses indicated that periostin-mediated inflammatory response and TGFβ/Smad signaling pathway proteins were closely related to the therapeutic effect of TDC in rat kidneys. Western blot analysis and RT-qPCR showed that TDC markedly downregulated the mRNA and protein expression of periostin in renal tissues compared to the untreated SHR. In addition, TGF-β and COL1A1 mRNA levels also decreased in SHR renal tissues following TDC treatment. In vitro studies showed that low to medium doses of TDC down-regulated the expression of periostin in the injury model of HEK293 cell. In addition, medium to high doses of TDC significantly inhibited collagen deposition in TGFβ1-induced HEK293 cell fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: Major components from the compound herbal medicine Tengdan Capsule are identified and quantified. TDC effectively lowers blood pressure and protects against renal damage caused by hypertension in SHR. Mechanistically, TDC blocks periostin by regulating the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway in the kidney, both in vivo and in vitro. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the need to address the mental health issues for the future adoption of e-learning among massive students in higher education. This study takes a lead to investigate whether and how general anxiety will influence college students' e-learning intention to provide knowledge to better improve the e-learning technology.Methods: We adopted the Technology acceptance model (TAM) to examine the difference between students with and without general anxiety in the e-learning intention where the students are classified based on the General Anxiety Disorder-2 scale. The model is empirically analyzed based on a survey of 512 college students in China regarding their e-learning experience in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.Results: Results demonstrate that the TAM is powerful in explaining the e-learning intention among college students with general anxiety. Besides, all effects associated with perceived usefulness (PU) are reinforced while those associated with perceived ease of use (PEOU) are attenuated in the anxiety group. The results suggest that instructors and higher education institutions should take advantage of the significant PU-intention relationship by providing quality e-learning, which is paramount to coping with the general anxiety among students.Limitations: This study provides a prototype attempt to investigate the influence of anxiety on e-learning where the different types of anxiety sources are synthesized. However, anxiety can stem from internal sources (computer anxiety, academic stress) and external sources (fear of the virus, lack of social interaction), which requires further investigations. Purpose – This study aims to investigate scholars’ roles in resolving environmental community conflict, as environmental community conflict is becoming an increasingly serious problem in contemporary China, and it explored the underlying factors and mechanisms that influence successful conflict resolution. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a combination of three types of sources – interviews, participant observation and existing literature, the study compared and contrasted 35 cases through a two-stage study project with 25 environmental community conflict cases in the first stage and ten non-environmental cases in the second. Findings – Results indicate that scholars serve seven roles in community conflict resolution: identification persons for potential sources of community conflict and supporters for the people who evaluate conflict problems before attempting to solve them; advisers for conflict protagonists; leaders of many knowledge-related activities; organizers of entrepreneurial activities for other community members; information brokers between community members and other stakeholders; representatives of the government, firms, community members and other stakeholders; and self-interested participants. While scholars’ participation is important for resolving community conflict, their actions are often not effective. Successful community conflict resolution involving scholars must satisfy eight underlying factors: local scholars’ sustained participation; high capacity; improvement on the organizational level of community members; emphasis on high efficiency knowledge and information transmission; effective finding and use of the community’s social capital; continual optimization on their action strategies; obtainability of some benefits; and non-local scholars’ sustained external support through social capital. The more closely these rules are followed, the more successful scholars’ participation in community conflict resolution will be. Originality/value – The findings have practical implications for improving the effectiveness of scholars’ participation in community conflict resolution in contemporary China and even in other countries. Background: Emotional support in social media can act as a buffer against the negative impact of affective disorders. However, empirical evidence relating to emotional support in social media and how it influences the wider public remains scanty. The objective of this study is therefore to conduct a prototype investigation into the translation mechanism of emotional support in social media, providing empirical evidence for practitioners to use to tackle mental health issues for the wider public.Methods: A regression model is proposed to examine the relationship between perceived and received emotional support. Received emotional support is set as the dependent variable and measured using public activity. Perceived emotional support is derived using Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based content analysis. The model is then analyzed using a panel date with a total number of 61,297 posts from 17 Weibo accounts in 17 provincial administrative units in China.Results: The relationship between perceived and received emotional support is not linear but complex, suggesting that translation of emotional support is not automatic. Further, our empirical evidence suggests that the translation of emotional support in social media is affected by frequency and pandemic stage.Limitations: The study does not examine the direct relationship between perceived and received emotional support, instead adopting public activity as a proxy for the latter construct. Aim of this study: Qiwei Baizhu Powder (QWBZP) is a traditional herbal prescription that has been used traditionally for the treatment of infantile diarrhea, including the infantile diarrhea caused by Human Rotavirus (HRV). In this study, we investigated the pharmacological activity of QWBZP extract. Materials and methods: NIH suckling mice with HRV induced diarrhea were used. Density of CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, mRNA expression of IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10 in intestinal mucosa epithelial cells were assayed. Results: QWBZP extract promoted the expressions of mRNA of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-γ in intestinal mucosa epithelial cells. Also, we found that the density of CD8+ cells in intestinal mucosa epithelial cells was significantly lower in QWBZP group than in Model group, while the density of CD8+ cells was significantly higher in QWBZP group than in Model group. Conclusion: These data suggest that QWBZP extract may exhibit antiviral effects through modulating the densities of T-cell subsets and the expressions of their cytokines in small intestinal mucosa epithelial cells. Variations in the UBQLN2 gene are associated with a group of diseases with X-linked dominant inheritance and clinical phenotypes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and/or frontal temporal lobe dementia (FTD). Cases with UBQLN2 variations have been rarely reported worldwide. The reported cases exhibit strong clinical heterogeneity. Here, we report two adult-onset cases with UBQLN2 variations in Han Chinese. Whole exome sequencing revealed the hemizygous P506S (c.1516C > T) and the heterozygous P509S variation (c.1525C > T), both of which were located within the hotspot mutation region. The patient with the P506S variation was a 24-year-old male. The clinical feature was spastic paraplegia without lower motor neuron damage. The patient's mother was an asymptomatic heterozygote carrier with skewed X-chromosome inactivation. The patient with the P509S variation was a 63-year-old female. Clinical features included ALS and parkinsonism. 18 F-fluorodopa PET-CT revealed presynaptic dopaminergic deficits in bilateral posterior putamen. Background: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) carries a high economic burden worldwide. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is advantageous for improving cognition and can be safely used in the treatment of depression. The effectiveness of tDCS of the left and right orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) as adjuvant treatment in patients with TRD has rarely been explored. Therefore, the objective of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness there of when administering left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) positive stimulation or OFC negative stimulation in patients with TRD., Methods: Ninety eligible participants will be recruited to receive intervention at Shanghai Mental Health Center. Treatment will be randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion. Participants will receive either DLPFC (n = 30), OFC (n = 30), or sham (n = 30) tDCS, while continuing their usual pharmacotherapy at a stable dosage for at least 2 weeks before enrollment and throughout the stimulation period. All participants will receive 20 weekday stimulation sessions of 60 minutes duration each. Participants in the active group will be stimulated at 2 mA throughout the session, whereas the sham group will receive only a brief period of stimulation to mimic the sensation. After 20 stimulation sessions, no further treatment will be administered. Measurements will be conducted at regular points throughout and at 8 weeks after trial completion. The primary outcome is the change in the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) score after 20 sessions. Secondary outcomes were defined as changes in other measurement scales, cognitive function, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), and serum biomarkers., Discussion: We hypothesize that, in contrast to the sham group, both the active DLPFC and OFC tDCS groups will show superiority in HAMD-17 score reduction after 5, 10, and 20 sessions. Moreover, associations of the improvement of depressive symptoms with variations in rs-fMRI and TRD-related biomarkers will be evaluated. Our study may suggest that adjunctive intensive tDCS with left DLPFC positive stimulation or right OFC negative stimulation may be effective as a novel method to relieve depressive symptoms in patients with TRD. Introduction: Adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy (ADLD) is a rare genetic leukoencephalopathy caused by duplication of the lamin B1 gene (LMNB1) or LMNB1 upstream deletions. Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is another leukoencephalopathy due to GGC repeat expansion in the 5'-untranslated region of the NOTCH2NLC gene. Here, we report two Chinese ADLD families with neuroimaging and clinical features mimicking NIID., Methods: We conducted detailed medical history inquiry, neurological examinations, and magnetic resonance imaging in the two families. Candidate gene sequencing and whole exome sequencing (WES) with copy number variation analysis were used to screen the genetic variations. The special points on the clinical and neuroimaging findings in the current families and differential diagnosis of ADLD with NIID are discussed., Results: The two families presented with slowly progressive, multiple central nervous system symptoms, including spastic paraplegia, autonomic dysfunction, ataxia, deep sensory loss, and tremor. Clinical phenotypes were consistent within the family. Transient hypoglycemia and transient dilated pupils indicating autonomic dysfunctions were recorded for the first time in ADLD. Brain MRI showed band-like hyperintensities at the cortico-medullary junction on DWI, typical for NIID. Skin biopsy and genetic sequencing of the NOTCH2NCL gene did not support the diagnosis of NIID. Further whole exome sequencing (WES) identified the duplication mutation spanning the entire LMNB1 gene., Conclusions: The novel feature of transient hypoglycemia and dilated pupils broadens the spectrum of autonomic dysfunction in ADLD. Objective: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) due to ERLIN2 gene mutations was designated as spastic paraplegia 18 (SPG18). To date, SPG18 families/cases are still rarely reported. All early reported cases shared the autosomal recessive (AR) inheritance pattern. Over the past 3 years, autosomal dominant (AD) or sporadic SPG18 cases had been continuously reported. Here, we reported the clinical and genetic features of the first autosomal dominant SPG18 pedigree in Chinese., Methods: We conducted detailed medical history inquiry, neurological examinations of the proband and his family members, and charted the family tree. The proband underwent brain and cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electromyography (EMG), and whole exome sequencing. Sanger sequencing was performed to verify the genetic variation in the proband and some family members. A literature review of all reported SPG18 families/cases was carried out to summarize the clinical-genetic characteristics of SPG18 under different inheritance patterns., Results: Four patients were clinically diagnosed as chronic spastic paraplegia in three consecutive generations with the autosomal dominant inheritance model. All the patients presented juvenile-adolescent onset and gradually worsening pure HSP phenotype. Clinical phenotypes were consistent within the family. Whole exome sequencing in the proband identified a previously reported heterozygous c.502G > A (p.V168M) mutation in exon 8 of ERLIN2 gene. This mutation was cosegregated with the phenotype in the family and was classified as likely pathogenic according to American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines. To date, eight AR-SPG18 families, five AD-SPG18 families, and three sporadic cases had been reported. Clinical phenotype of AD-SPG18 was juvenile-adolescent onset pure HSP, while the phenotype of AR-SPG18 was mostly complicated HSP with earlier onset and more severe conditions. In rare cases, the initial spastic paraplegia could evolve to rapidly progressive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)., Conclusions: We reported the first autosomal dominant SPG18 pedigree in Chinese Han population, which added more pathogenic evidence for V168M mutation. As more SPG18 cases reported, the essentials of SPG18 need to be updated in clinical practice. The clinical presentation in Chinese patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) may be unique due to the big difference in the codon 129 polymorphism of the prion protein gene (PRNP). This study retrospectively reviewed 26 cases of sCJD diagnosed in a single center in recent years. All 26 sCJD patients received brain magnetic resonance imaging scan, cerebrospinal fluid 14-3-3 protein detection, electroencephalogram, and PRNP gene screening. The codon 129 polymorphism were all homozygous MM in 26 sCJD patients. The main onset symptoms of sCJD patients were rapidly progressive dementia, visual impairment, and cerebellar ataxia. At the time of diagnosis, the incidence of myoclonus and akinetic mutism were relatively low (<50%). For auxiliary examinations, the positive rate of the typical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities, cerebrospinal fluid 14-3-3 protein, and electroencephalogram-periodic sharp wave complex was 96%, 64%, and 50%, respectively. As MM genotype is dominant and brain MRI is sensitive, brain MRI seems to play a major role in diagnosis of sCJD in Chinese.

Background: The ubiquitin conjugating enzyme E2L3 (UBE2L3) gene is associated with susceptibility to many autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between UBE2L3 gene and autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) and their clinical phenotypes., Methods: We genotyped five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs131654, rs5754217, rs2298428, rs140489 and rs5998672 of UBE2L3 gene in case groups including 1028 patients with AITDs [676 cases of Graves' disease (GD) and 352 cases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT)] and control group including 897 healthy individuals. The genotyping was performed with the method of polymerase chain reaction-ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR)., Results: The frequencies of allele and genotype of five SNPs in gene UBE2L3 showed no statistically significant difference between case groups and control group, respectively. Moreover, no significant differences in frequencies of allele and genotype of five SNPs of the gene were found between clinical subphenotypes of AITDs and control group. Such subphenotypes included GD, HT, and thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). The negative results were also found in the frequency of other haplotypes of the gene except the haplotype of TCGGC, which was significantly higher in HT group than in control group (P = 0.031, OR = 1.441)., Conclusions: The present findings indicate that TCGGC haplotype is associated with an increased risk of HT and UBE2L3 gene is likely to be a susceptibility factor to HT in a Chinese Han population.

Background: Several studies support a link between autoimmunity and interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) gene polymorphisms. We have taken the opportunity to examine association of the autoimmune disease risk gene, the interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) to survey its susceptibility to autoimmune thyroid disease. "A total of 667 patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases and 301 healthy controls were genotyped for rs10954213, rs2004640, rs3807306, rs752637 and rs7808907 of IRF5 gene polymorphisms". We further investigated the association between BANK1 gene and IRF5 gene in AITD patients., Results: For IRF5 gene, both in allele and genotype frequencies from both GD and HT patients were not significantly different from those of controls. Association between rs7808907C allele and Graves' disease showed trend towards significance (P=0.067). Haplotype results in IRF5 represented in the same block, without significant association. No significant association was found between all IRF5 SNPs and ophthalmopathy in Graves' patients. Additive interaction analysis revealed no interactions between IRF5 and BANK1 gene in AITD patients., Conclusion: Our data fail to reveal IRF5 as a susceptibility gene to AITD and do not support additive effect of IRF5 to BANK1 gene., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) polymorphisms and autoimmune thyroid diseases and clinical features. We genotyped six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs1053005, rs2293152, rs744166, rs17593222, rs2291281, and rs2291282 of STAT3 gene in 667 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (417 Graves' disease (GD) and 250 Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT)) and 301 healthy controls. The allele A from rs1053005 was significantly less frequent in both GD and HT patients (P = 0.0024, OR = 0.6958, 95%CI = 0.5508-0.8788; P = 0.0091, OR = 0.7013, 95%CI = 0.5397-0.9112, respectively). The AA genotype of rs1053005 was less in GD and HT patients too (P = 0.0025,OR = 0.6278, 95%CI = 0.466-0.847) and (P = 0.0036,OR = 0.601, 95%CI = 0.428-0.843). The allele G from rs17593222 increased the susceptibility to the ophthalmopathy development both in autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and GD patients (P = 0.0007, OR = 3.980, 95%CI = 1.871-8.464; P = 0.0081, OR = 3.378, 95%CI = 1.441-7.919, respectively). The allele A and AA genotype of SNP rs1053005 may protect individuals from the susceptibility to AITD and their frequency decreased in AITD patients. In addition, the allele G of rs17593222 may increase the ophthalmopathy risk in AITD patients. Our findings suggest the existence of association between STAT3 gene and AITD, thus adding STAT3 gene to the list of the predisposing genes to AITD.

Objective: To describe total drinking water intake among primary and middle school students in one district of Shenzhen and to provide scientific evidence for adequate intakes of drinking water for different people in China., Method: A total of 816 students from three primary and middle schools of Shenzhen was selected using three-stage random sampling method. The information on amounts and types of daily drinking water was recorded by subjects for seven consecutive days using a 24 hours measurement. The amounts and types of daily drinking water among different ages and between boys and girls were analyzed., Results: The average total drinking water of subjects was (1225+/-557) ml/d, and the consumption of total drinking water in boys ((1303+/-639) ml/d) was significantly higher than that in girls ((1134+/-478) ml/d, P<0.01). The consumption of total drinking water of secondary school students ((1389+/-541) ml/d) and high school student ((1318+/-641) ml/d) was no statistically difference, but was higher than primary school students ((1097+/-525) ml/d, P<0.01). The average plain water and beverages of the subjects was (818+/-541) ml/d and (407+/-294) ml/d respectively., Conclusion: Major of fluid intake comes from drinking water in children and adolescenct of Shenzhen. The knowledge of drinking water of primary school students is need to comprehensive enough.
