Importance: Epidemiological evidences regarding the association between whole grain intake and the risk of new-onset hypertension are still controversial. Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between whole grain intake and new-onset hypertension and examine possible effect modifiers in the general population. Methods: A total of 10,973 participants without hypertension from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were enrolled, with follow-up beginning in 1997 and ending in 2015. Whole grain intake was assessed by 3 consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household food inventory. Multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression model after adjusting for potential risk factors. Results: During a median follow-up of 7.0 years, 3,733 participants developed new-onset hypertension. The adjusted HRs (95% CIs) were as follows: for quartile 2 (HR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.47–0.57), quartile 3 (HR: 0.46; 95% CI: 0.42–0.51), and quartile 4 (HR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.31–0.38), compared with quartile 1. Different types of whole grain types, including wheat (adjusted HR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.32–0.39), maize (adjusted HR, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.42–0.59), and millet (adjusted HR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.30–0.48), showed significant associations with a reduced risk of hypertension. The association between whole grain intake and new-onset hypertension was stronger in individuals with older age (P for interaction < 0.001) and higher BMI (P for interaction < 0.001). Conclusion: Higher consumption of whole grains was significantly associated with a lower risk of new-onset hypertension. BACKGROUND: The flow reaching the vocal folds may be lower than that at the output of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) system. This could be due to upper-respiratory obstruction, oxygen leakage, or other factors. The objective of this study was to observe the effect of flow through a nasopharyngeal airway on intrapharyngeal pressure (IPP) in subjects undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB). METHODS: Patients scheduled for FOB were invited to participate. Measurements were performed at flows of 0-60 L/min; the subjects wore WN-N95 folding medical protective masks (N95) and either underwent FOB or not. IPP at each flow was recorded following 15 s of ventilation, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the gastric sinus was measured before and after FOB. Hypoxemia, reflux aspiration, and other pertinent events were recorded. RESULTS: Sixty subjects undergoing FOB at the Affiliated Hospital of Jiaxing University participated in this trial from October 2022-September 2023. IPP increased significantly with an increase in flow and also increased after placing the N95 mask with the same flow (P < .001). When results from before to after FOB were compared, the difference in CSA was statistically significant 263.6 (220.7-300.5) mm² vs 305.5 (275.4-329.5) mm², P < .001, but the difference in the risk of reflux aspiration was not statistically significant (0% vs 6.7%, P = .13). Complication rates during treatment were 8.3% for hypoxemia, 0% for reflux aspiration, 1.7% for hypertension, 1.7% for hypotension, 6.7% for tachycardia, 5% for bradycardia, and 10% for postoperative nausea and vomiting. CONCLUSIONS: HFNC can provide effective oxygen therapy for people undergoing FOB, and increases in IPP with flow in the range of 0-60 L/min may not increase the risk of reflux aspiration. Background: Existing research indicates that the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on preventing and treating hypertension. However, its specific effect on hypertension among elderly Chinese individuals is unclear. Aims: The objective of this research was to explore the association between the Chinese version of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (cMIND) diet and hypertension among elderly Chinese individuals, aiming to offer novel strategies for alleviating the burden of hypertension in this demographic. Methods: In this study, we used cross-sectional data published in 2018 by the China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) to develop a binary logistic regression model to investigate the correlation between cMIND diet and hypertension in a Chinese elderly population. Restricted cubic spline was used to test for linear associations, and further subgroup analyses were performed to test for interactions. Results: In total, 7,103 older adults were included in the study, with a prevalence of hypertension of 39.0%. When the cMIND diet score was used as a continuous variable, a significant protective effect against hypertension was present (OR = 0.955, 95% CI:0.923–0.988, p = 0.008); when used as a categorical variable, this protective effect was still present at higher levels (compared to lower levels) of the cMIND diet (OR = 0.869, 95% CI: 0.760–0.995, p = 0.042). Discussion: Although the Mediterranean diet has great potential to reduce the chance of hypertension, it should also consider the effect on the Chinese population. The results of this study provide new ways to reduce the disease burden of hypertension in Chinese older adults and improve quality of life in later life. Evidence regarding the combined effects of green space and air pollutants on hypertension remains limited and complex. This study aims to investigate the varying effects of greenness under different air pollution levels in China, using data from the wave 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) involving 17 468 adults (aged ≥ 45 years). As a result, the prevalence rate of hypertension was 42.04%. Logistic regression analyses revealed the positive associations between air pollution concentrations at the city level and prevalent hypertension and the negative associations between NDVI and prevalent hypertension, all of which were more prominent in the populations of the eastern and rural regions. Notably, the negative effect of green space was greater at the lowest quartiles of each air pollutant (OR for PM2.5 quartiles = 0.724, 0.792, 0.740, and 0.931). Simple Summary: The PELICan hypothesis speaks to the role of perinatal and early life stressors (including malnutrition) in the causation of young-onset cancers. To date, there is no evidence correlating perinatal malnutrition and the risk of young-onset cancer. The Great Famine of China was a significant event in human history. The present study compared the incidence of young-onset cancers in individuals born during and just after the famine to those born prior to the famine. Perinatal exposure to famine, especially in females, was associated with a higher risk of young-onset cancer. This was particularly evident for young-onset genitourinary cancers. Background/Objectives: Perinatal exposure to malnutrition has been hypothesised to influence the development of young-onset cancer (≤50 years of age). This study aimed to determine if perinatal malnutrition in individuals exposed to the Great Famine of China increased their risk of developing young-onset cancer compared to other individuals born prior to the famine. Subjects/Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 7272 participants from the China Health and Nutrition Survey who were classified into four groups based on birth year: participants born between 1953 and 1955 (before the famine) were designated as the pre-famine group (unexposed); the remainder formed perinatal exposure groups comprised of those exposed during the famine (1959–1961), those exposed in the early post-famine period (1962–1964), and those exposed in the late post-famine period (1965–1967). Multivariable adjusted log-binomial regression models were used to calculate the RR and 95% CI of young-onset cancer (including genitourinary cancer) across four groups. Results: Perinatal exposure to early post-famine (RR 2.08; 95%CI 1.04, 4.34; p = 0.043) and the female sex (RR 15.6, 95%CI 4.54, 60.3; p < 0.001) were noted to have a significantly increased risk of young-onset cancer. In addition, the early (RR 13.8; 95%CI 2.68, 253; p = 0.012) and late post-famine (RR 12.3; 95%CI 2.16, 231; p = 0.020) cohorts demonstrated a significantly increased risk of young-onset genitourinary cancer. The latter was accompanied by an increased risk of hypertension (RR 3.30; 95%CI 1.28, 7.87; p = 0.009). Conclusions: Perinatal exposure to famine, especially in females, was associated with a higher risk of young-onset cancer. This was particularly evident for young-onset genitourinary cancers. Objective: Previous studies focused on the benefits of adequate prosthodontic treatment, while few studies have investigated the prosthodontic‐related risks to health. As a modifiable oral health indicator, the association of ill‐fitting prosthesis (IFP) with hypertension has not been fully explored. Methods: This cross‐sectional study involved 158,659 adults in Beijing (2009–2017) receiving intra‐oral examinations and blood pressure measurements. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of IFP with the prevalence of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≧ 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≧ 90 mmHg, as well as subgroup analyses by different fixed IFP subgroups (according to involved teeth number) and removable IFP subgroup. We further investigated effect modifications among stratified populations. Results: 158,659 individuals were included for analysis, 346 (26.86%) in IFP group and 27,380 (17.40%) in non‐IFP group (p < 0.001) were hypertensive. After adjustment of sex, age, obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, hsCRP, family history of CVD, self‐reported smoking, self‐reported drinking and WC, ORs of hypertension, SBP ≧ 140 mmHg and DBP ≧ 90 mmHg were 1.330 (95% CI: 1.162–1.522), 1.277 (95% CI: 1.098–1.486) and 1.376 (95% CI: 1.186–1.596), respectively (p < 0.05). Furthermore, after full adjustment, the number of involved teeth showed a significant incremental trend with hypertension risk in the population with and without IFP (p for trend <0.001). The IFP–blood pressure associations were more pronounced in females, 18–60 years, non‐obese and diabetic participants. INTRODUCTION This study examined the prevalence of tobacco exposure and drinking and ascertained the relationships between tobacco exposure, alcohol drinking, concurrent smoking and drinking, and hypertension in rural southwestern China. METHODS Data were collected from a cross-sectional health interview and examination survey, which included 7572 adults aged ≥35 years, in rural China. Participant demographic characteristics, smoking habits, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), and alcohol drinking habits were obtained using a standard questionnaire. Blood pressure (BP), height, weight, and waist circumference were measured for each participant. RESULTS The overall prevalence of smoking, SHS exposure, drinking, concurrent smoking and drinking, concurrent exposure to SHS and drinking, and hypertension was 37.7%, 27.4%, 16.2%, 12.6%, 1.6%, and 41.3%, respectively. Males had a significantly higher prevalence of smoking (74.1% vs 2.2%, p<0.01), drinking (31.1% vs 1.7%, p<0.01), and concurrent smoking and drinking than females (25.3% vs 0.3%, p<0.01). However, females had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure than males (30.2% vs 20.6%, p<0.01). Ethnic minorities had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure, drinking, and concurrent smoking and drinking, than Han participants (p<0.01). Participants with a higher education level had a higher prevalence of smoking, drinking, and concurrent smoking and drinking than their counterparts (p<0.01). In contrast, participants with a lower education level had a higher prevalence of SHS exposure than their counterparts (p<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis found that smokers (AOR=1.31; 95% CI: 1.13-1.51), individuals exposed to SHS (AOR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.11-1.43), drinkers (AOR=1.31; 95%: CI: 1.15-1.50), and concurrent smokers and drinkers (AOR=1.45; 95% CI: 1.25-1.67) all had a higher probability of having hypertension (p<0.01). Additionally, concurrent smoking and drinking had the strongest association with the prevalence of hypertension (AOR=1.45; 95% CI: 1.25-1.67; p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Socioeconomic factors play an important role in influencing the prevalence of smoking, exposure to SHS, and drinking in rural southwest China. Interventions to prevent and reduce hypertension should, in particular, focus on smokers, individuals exposed to SHS, drinkers, and, in particular, concurrent smokers and drinkers. Background: Insulin resistance (IR) and obesity are established risk factors for hypertension, with triglyceride-glucose (TyG) serving as a recognized surrogate marker for IR. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between TyG-BMI and hypertension in the general population. Methods: A total of 60,283 adults aged ≥18 years who underwent face-to-face questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory examination were included in this study. Multivariable logistic regression models and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) were used to determine the association between TyG-BMI and hypertension. The restricted cubic spline model was used for the dose-response analysis. Results: After fully adjusting for confounding variables, multivariate logistic regression model showed a stable positive association between TyG-BMI and hypertension (OR: 1.61 per SD increase; 95% CI: 1.55–1.67; P-trend < 0.001). The multivariate adjusted OR and 95% CI for the highest TyG-BMI quartile compared with the lowest quartile were 2.52 (95% CI 2.28–2.78). Dose-response analysis using restricted cubic spline confirmed that the association between TyG-BMI index and hypertension was linear. Subgroup analyses showed that stronger associations between TyG-BMI index and hypertension were detected in young and middle-aged individuals (P for interaction < 0.05). ROC analysis showed that TyG-BMI index could better predict the risk of hypertension than other parameters (TyG-BMI cut-off value: 207.105, AUC: 0.719, sensitivity 65.5%, specificity 66.8%), particularly among young and middle-aged people. Background and aims: Using structural equation model (SEM) to test a conceptual model of pathways of developing hypertension among dysglycemia (IFG and T2DM) adults in Eastern China, emphasizing the unique mediation effect of insulin resistance and obesity on the relationship between modified/unmodified factors and hypertension. Methods and results: Participants with dysglycemia (n = 10,401) were extracted from the survey of Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province in China. Dietary patterns were identified by using principal component analysis (PCA). SEM was employed to evaluate multiple pathways of hypertension among participants with IFG and T2DM. Three dietary patterns were derived using PCA. The tuber animal food pattern (OR = 0.825, 95% CI 0.723–0.940) and the balanced food pattern (OR = 0.812, 95% CI 0.715–0.922) were negatively associated with hypertension, while the Chinese rural food pattern (OR = 1.163, 95% CI 1.019–1.328) was positively associated with hypertension. The best SEM model showed that BMI (0.140), smoking (0.048) and Chinese rural food pattern (0.022) positively associated with hypertension; while tuber animal food pattern (− 0.025) had a negative direct effect on hypertension. Notably, insulin resistance could mediate the link between lifestyles (smoking and dietary patterns) and hypertension. Conclusion: Accordingly, we emphasized the importance of lifestyle intervention, mainly including obesity management, choosing healthy diets and decreasing smoking control, which may profoundly benefit this high-risk group among Chinese population. Introduction: Hypertension (HT) is a major public health problem globally, and it is the commonest chronic disease with a prevalence of 27% among people aged 15 years or above in Hong Kong. There is emerging literature confirmed that patients with resistant hypertension (RHT) give its increased risk for adverse clinical outcomes and higher rate of documented target organ damage. This study aims to identify the prevalence of RHT among Chinese hypertensive patients managed in public primary care setting of Hong Kong and exploring its associated risk factors. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. Chinese hypertensive patients aged 30 or above with regular follow-up between 1st July 2019 and 30th June 2020 in 10 public primary care clinics under the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong were included. Demographic data, clinical parameters and drug profile of patients were retrieved from its computerized record system. The prevalence of RHT was identified and the associated risk factors of RHT were explored by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Among the 538 sampled Chinese hypertensive patients, the mean age was 67.4 ± 11.5 years old, and 51.9% were female. The mean duration of hypertension was 10.1 ± 6.4 years, with a mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of 128.8 ± 12.3 and 72.9 ± 10.8 mmHg respectively. 40 out of 538 patients were found to have RHT, giving an overall prevalence of 7.43%. Four factors were found to be associated with increased risk of RHT, in ascending order of odds ratio: duration of hypertension (OR 1.08), male gender (OR 2.72), comorbid with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM, OR 2.99), and congestive heart failure (CHF, OR 5.39). Conclusion: The prevalence of RHT among Chinese hypertensive patients in primary care setting of Hong Kong is 7.43%. RHT is more common in male patients, patients with longer duration of hypertension, concomitant T2DM and CHF. This study examines associations between sleep apnea risk and hypertension in a sample of immigrant Chinese and Korean Americans. The dataset included Chinese and Korean patients ages 50–75 recruited from primary care physicians' offices from April 2018 to June 2020 in the Baltimore-Washington DC Metropolitan Area (n = 394). Hypertension risk was determined using a combination of blood pressure measurements, self-reported diagnosis of hypertension by a medical professional, and/or self-reported use of antihypertensive medications. Linear regression models examined the associations between sleep apnea risk and blood pressure (systolic blood pressure [SBP] and diastolic blood pressure [DBP]). Poisson regression models examined associations sleep apnea risk and hypertension. Models controlled for body mass index (BMI), demographic, and socioeconomic risk factors. We further examined models for potential effect modification by age, gender, Asian subgroup, and obesity, as well as effect modification of daytime sleepiness on the association between snoring and hypertension risk. High risk of sleep apnea appeared to be associated positively with SBP (β = 6.77, 95% CI: 0.00–13.53), but not with DBP. The association was positive for hypertension, but it was not statistically significant (PR = 1.11, 95% CI: 0.87–1.41). We did not find effect modification of the associations between sleep apnea and hypertension risk, but we did find that daytime sleepiness moderated the effect of snoring on SBP. Snoring was associated with higher SBP, primarily in the presence of daytime sleepiness, such that predicted SBP was 133.27 mmHg (95% CI: 126.52, 140.02) for someone with both snoring and daytime sleepiness, compared to 123.37 mmHg (95% CI: 120.40, 126.34) for someone neither snoring nor daytime sleepiness. Background and objectives: To investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and blood biochemical indicators in early adolescence, and to provide ideas for early prevention of diseases and explore possible disease-related predictors. Methods: 3125 participants aged 10 ∼ 14 years were selected from China from the survey of "China Nutrition and Health Surveillance (2016 ∼ 2017) ". Employing advanced statistical methods, including generalized linear models, heatmaps, hierarchical clustering, and generalized additive models, the study delved into the associations between BMI and various biochemical indicators. Results: In early adolescence, indicators including systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, weight, height, BMI, hemoglobin, blood uric acid, serum creatinine, albumin, vitamin A presented increasing trends with the increase of age (P < 0.05), whereas LDL-C, vitamin D, and ferritin showed decreasing trends with the increase of age (P < 0.05). The increase in hemoglobin and blood uric acid levels with age was more pronounced in males compared to females (P < 0.05). BMI was positively correlated with blood glucose, hemoglobin, triglyceride, LDL-C, blood uric acid, serum creatinine, ferritin, transferrin receptor, hs-CRP, total protein, vitamin A (P < 0.05). There was a significant BMI × age interaction in the correlation analysis with LDL-C, transferrin receptor, serum creatinine, and hs-CRP (P < 0.05). BMI was a risk factor for hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, low high density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, and metabolic syndrome in all age groups (OR > 1, P < 0.05). Conclusions: High BMI was a risk factor for hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, low high density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, and MetS in early adolescents. Maternal poor sleep quality may increase blood pressure during pregnancy, but sound evidence is still limited and inconsistent. To evaluate whether sleep disturbances in early gestation are risk factors for the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, we conducted the Early Life Plan Project from June 2016 to December 2019. Maternal sleep patterns were assessed at 12–16 weeks of gestation by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire. For gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, we estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using multinomial logistic regression models adjusting for potential confounders. Among 5,532 eligible women, we observed that maternal blood pressure in early gestation was significantly higher in women with low sleep efficiency (≤85%), long sleep duration (≥9 hours/night), and snoring. Compared with nonsnorers, snoring in early gestation was independently associated with preeclampsia (OR = 1.72 (95% CI: 1.09, 2.73) for snoring once or twice per week; OR = 2.06 (95% CI: 1.01, 4.31) for snoring 3 or more times per week), particularly for term preeclampsia (OR = 1.79 (95% CI: 1.08, 2.95) and 2.26 (95% CI: 1.03, 4.95), respectively). Few studies have investigated the association between PM2.5 and hypertension among floating populations. We therefore examined the relationship using binary logistic regression. Each grade of increment in the annual average PM2.5 (grade one: ≤15 µg/m3; grade two: 15–25 µg/m3; grade three: 25–35 µg/m3 [Excluding 25]; grade four: ≥35 µg/m3) was associated with an increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 1.081, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.034–1.129). Among the female floating population (OR = 1.114, 95% CI: 1.030–1.204), those with education level of primary school and below (OR = 1.140, 95% CI: 1.058–1.229), construction workers (OR = 1.228, 95% CI: 1.058–1.426), and those living in the eastern region of China (OR = 1.241, 95% CI: 1.145–1.346) were more vulnerable to PM2.5. These results indicate that PM2.5 is positively associated with hypertension in floating populations. Purpose. Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most common adverse drug reactions to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), but little is known about its clinical risk factors. The aim of this study was to elucidate the association between baseline clinical characteristics and the occurrence of HTN in advanced gastric cancer (GC) patients prescribed apatinib, a commonly used VEGF-TKI in China, in a real-world setting. Patients and Methods. Fifty-five GC patients treated with apatinib from December 1st, 2016, to December 1st, 2020, were retrospectively included in electronic medical records. Adverse drug reactions were defined according to the National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v5.0. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to investigate potential clinical risk factors for apatinib-related HTN. Results. The incidence of apatinib-related HTN of all grades was 45.45%, and grade 3 HTN occurred in 16.36% of patients. The median maximal systolic blood pressure (SBP) during apatinib treatment was 153 mm·Hg, and the median time to event was 25 days. New-onset HTN occurred in 10/33 (30.30%) patients. Preexisting HTN (odds ratio [OR]: 4.155; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.252, 13.787; p = 0.020) was the key independent risk factor associated with apatinib-related HTN. Conclusion. The incidence of HTN was high in patients treated with apatinib, and preexisting HTN was an independent risk factor. Objective: Hypertension refers to the persistent elevation of blood pressure above the established normal range, resulting in increased pressure exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels during its circulation. Recent studies have identified significant associations between obesity and lipid-related indices, as well as hypertension. Nevertheless, these studies have yet to comprehensively examine the correlation between the two variables. Our objective is to identify the fat and lipid-related indices that have the strongest correlation with hypertension. Method: There was a total of 9488 elderly and middle-aged Chinese citizens who participated in this investigation. The participants in this research were separated into distinct gender cohorts. The participants were classified into normal and hypertensive categories according to their gender, with hypertension defined as a blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher, or a history of hypertension. Through the utilization of binary logistic regression analyses and the receiver operator curve (ROC), the optimal among fourteen indicators associated with obesity and lipids were identified. Results: After adjusting for variables, statistical analysis showed that all 14 measures of obesity and lipid were risk factors for hypertension. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis reveals that the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) has the highest degree of relationship to hypertension. Simultaneously, a statistically significant association between hypertension and these 14 variables was observed in both males and females. Conclusion: There was a significant independent association between various parameters related to obesity and lipid-related index and the presence of hypertension, indicating that these factors can be considered risk factors for hypertension. Background: Body mass index (BMI) is an important risk factor for hypertension in diabetic patients. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Although liver-derived biological intermediates may play irreplaceable roles in the pathophysiology of diabetes, few studies have explored them in the association between BMI and hypertension in diabetes. Objective: To investigate the role of liver enzymes in mediating the relationship between BIM exposure and hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: We included a total of 1765 participants from the China National Diabetic Chronic Complications Study Cohort. Associations between liver enzymes and hypertension were estimated using multivariable regression models. The function of liver indicators in the relationship between BMI and hypertension was assessed using mediation analysis. Mediation analysis was conducted, taking into account age, diabetes duration, current smoking, fasting plasma glucose level, glycated hemoglobin, anti-diabetic therapy, and family history of diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and hyperlipidemia. Results: For men, the association of BMI with hypertension was partially mediated by alanine aminotransferase (ALT), with a proportion of mediation was 68.67%, by aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was 27.02%, and by γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) was 38.58%, by AST/ALT was 63.35%; for women, the proportion mediated by ALT was 36.93%, and by AST was 37.47%, and GGT was 44.60%, and AST/ALT was 43.73% for BMI (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The effect of BMI on hypertension is partly mediated by liver indicators (ALT, AST, GGT, and AST/ALT) in diabetic patients. Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and metabolic stress, involved in the stepwise development of cardiovascular complications. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a novel hepatokine involved in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, and has been linked to the prediction, treatment, and improvement of prognosis in multiple cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between FGF21 levels and vascular diseases (VDs) including carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) and hypertension (HP) in patients with T2DM. Methods: Baseline serum FGF21 was determined in a cross-sectional study of 701 patients with T2DM and 258 healthy control. Results: The morbidity of CAS was increased in T2DM patients with HP as compared with those without (p < 0.001). The average serum FGF21 level of healthy was [123.9 (67.2-219.3)]. Baseline FGF21 was significantly higher in those who developed CAS or HP than in those who did not [305.9 (177.2-508.4) vs. 197.2 (129.7-308.3) pg/mL, p < 0.001]. In addition, an elevated serum FGF21 was observed in T2DM patients with HP and CAS than that of T2DM patients with CAS or HP [550.5 (312.6-711.3) vs. 305.9 pg/mL, p < 0.001]. Serum FGF21 levels were positively correlated with body mass index and carotid intima media thicknes (p < 0.05), the association remained significant after adjusting for age and T2DM duration. Furthermore, the multinomial logistic regression showed that serum FGF21 was independently associated with CAS and HP in patients with T2DM after adjustment for demographic and traditional VDs risk factors (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Baseline FGF21 is elevated in VDs during diabetes, changes of serum FGF21 levels were appropriately matched to metabolic stress. Repeated measurement study was conducted to investigate the dynamic changes between blood Pb levels and blood pressure, our results showed Pb exposure caused an average annual increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressure with a level of 0.98/0.81 mm Hg, which provided basic data for health surveillance of exposed workers. Objectives: To explore the differences in the increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in 3 consecutive years among lead (Pb) workers. Methods: Four hundred forty-eight Pb workers were enrolled in this repeated-measure study. Blood Pb, SBP, and DBP were measured in 2015 to 2017. Repeated measure of analysis of variance was used to compare the differences in the increase of SBP and DBP. Results: The mean SBP values were 124.0/125.5/126.9 mm Hg, and the mean DBP values were 75.4/77.4/77.8 mm Hg from 2015 to 2017. The differences in the increase of SBP and DBP were 2.94/2.42 mm Hg during the 3-year period. The average annual increase of SBP or DBP showed an upward trend in different Pb dose groups (F = 4.904, P = 0.002; F = 3.612, P = 0.013). Background: Nuts and algae have been shown to improve BP levels, but their effectiveness is controversial. Aims: This study aims to illustrate the effect of dietary pattern with nuts and algae-less on BP levels in children and adolescents from a cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 5645 children from the Chongqing Children's Health Cohort, aged 9.34 ± 1.74 years with 52.05% males, were analyzed. Stratified analysis was conducted to explore the differences between the two dietary patterns in urban or rural areas, as well as the differences in different gender. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influence factors of increased BP. And a GLM was used to analyze the influence of the two dietary patterns on systolic blood pressure (SBP, mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (DBP, mmHg), and mean arterial pressure (MAP, mmHg). Results: Children with nuts and algae-less dietary patterns had higher SBP (104.68 ± 10.31 vs 103.81 ± 9.74, P = .006), DBP (64.27 ± 7.53 vs 63.55 ± 7.52, P = .002), and MAP (77.74 ± 7.75 vs 76.97 ± 7.52, P = .001) compared with those children with a balanced diet. After adjusting for covariates, the nuts and algae-less diet was a risk factor for hypertension in children when compared with the balanced diet(OR(95%CI):1.455(1.097,1.930), P = .009). The nuts and algae-less diet has a significant influence on SBP (104.68 ± 10.31 mmHg vs.103.81 ± 9.74 mmHg, P = .006). Stratified analysis by sex showed that nuts and algae-less dietary patterns had a more significant impact on females than males. It is a common local inflammatory disease associated with hypertension, this study aims to explore the relationship between periodontitis and uncontrolled hypertension and whether inflammation indication such as white blood cell (WBC) count or neutrophil count is a mediator of this relationship. Methods: One thousand four hundred eighty-eight elders attending annual physical and oral examinations in Zhejiang province were included in this study. The staging of Periodontitis was classified as none, mild-moderate and severe. Participants are categorized into two groups based on blood pressure: hypertensive(positive high blood pressure(HBP) history or underwent HBP medication or blood pressure(BP) ≥ 140/90 mmHg) and uncontrolled hypertensive (systolic blood pressure(SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg or distolic blood pressure(DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg). Peripheral blood samples were collected, information on hypertension history and potential confounders (age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise frequency, diabetes) was collected in questionnaires. The correlation between periodontitis and hypertension was investigated using logistics regression analyses, mediation analysis was assessed for the effect of inflammation on hypertension. Results: The study population includes 1,488 participants aged 55–90 years. Odds of uncontrolled hypertension increased significantly along with periodontitis in the regression models both in unadjusted model (odds ratio(OR): 1.407, 95% confidence intervals(CI): 1.037 ~ 1.910) and fully adjusted model (OR: 1.950, 95% CI: 1.127 ~ 3.373). Mediation analysis confirmed that WBC and neutrophic count function as a full mediator of the association between periodontitis and uncontrolled hypertension either in the unadjusted or the adjusted model. Conclusions: In a study of urban elderly population in southeast China, periodontitis is found to be significantly associated with uncontrolled hypertension, such relation is mediated by WBC and neutrophil count. Periodontitis can increase the difficulty of controlling hypertension. Background: Metabolic risk factors in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have not been well described in China. Additionally, it is unclear whether these factors have an impact on the prognosis of PBC patients. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of main metabolic risk factors in PBC, and to evaluate their prognostic values for liver-related outcomes. Methods: A cohort of 789 PBC patients was retrospectively studied between July 2008 and September 2019 by investigating the main metabolic risk factors and analyzing liver-related outcomes. Results: At presentation, 271 (34.3%) patients had concomitant hyperlipidemia, 126 (16.0%) had hypertension, 94 (11.9%) had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and 17 (2.2%) had nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Hyperlipidemia was found to be associated with the lower risk of liver-related death [P<0.0001, hazard ratio (HR): 0.397, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.268–0.588] and adverse outcomes (P<0.0001, HR: 0.487, 95% CI:0.367–0.646), while hypertension was noted as a risk factor for liver-related death (P=0.001, HR: 1.788, 95% CI:1.268– 2.521) and adverse outcomes (P=0.014, HR: 1.417, 95% CI:1.074–1.869). Moreover, age ≥ 55 years old (P=0.005) and cirrhosis (P<0.0001) had superimposition effects on hypertension as a risk factor for liver-related death, while only cirrhosis (P<0.0001) had an effect on hypertension as a risk factor for adverse outcomes. Additionally, anti-sp100 was associated with adverse outcomes (P=0.013) in PBC patients with hypertension in univariate Cox regression analysis. Conclusion: Hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and T2DM were found as main metabolic risk factors in PBC in China. Hyperlipidemia indicated a benign clinical outcome of PBC, while hypertension indicated a poor outcome of PBC. Background. Reliable epidemiologic data on the present burden of hypertension are needed in developing region-specific strategies since previous studies have suggested that China is lagging in risk factor management. Objective. The study aimed at exploring the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors among adult residents in Ganzhou, China. Methodology. A multistage, stratified, and cluster random sampling method was used to conduct the cross-sectional survey. The study selected four county-level districts in Ganzhou City, China, as the investigation area. Permanent residents aged ≥18 years who have settled in the area for 6 months or more were selected. A total of 7430 residents were involved in the study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify predictors of hypertension. Results. The prevalence of hypertension in Ganzhou was 28.5%, and the age-standardized prevalence of hypertension was 22.4%. Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that multiple variables have a statistically significant effect on the prevalence of hypertension. The elderly (odds ratio [95% CI]: 2.791 [2.594–3.004]), men (1.805 [1.583–2.058]), lower educated (0.848 [0.805–0.893]), a family history of hypertension (4.575 [3.900–5.368]), higher body mass index (1.344 [1.215–1.488]), central obesity (1.532 [1.304–1.799]), and less vegetable intake (1.150 [1.023–1.294]) were the major risk factors for hypertension. Simple Summary: The impact of stroke on patients with cancer is of significant concern, as gynecologic oncologists occasionally face medical challenges in managing patients who experience stroke during cancer treatment. However, the relationship between stroke and gynecological cancers has not been sufficiently explored. Here, we evaluated the risk factors for stroke in patients with three major types of gynecological cancers and their effects on cancer prognosis. Out of the 644 patients, 54 (8.4%) experienced a stroke, which is notably higher than the 2% of stroke occurrence rate in the general population. Stroke is significantly associated with age and hypertension. Contrary to our initial concerns, stroke was not found to be an independent prognostic factor for progression-free or overall survival. These findings suggest the importance of an appropriate management plan that considers the age, medical history, and tumor characteristics of the patient, rather than an excessive concern about stroke itself. Increased life expectancy and cancer prevalence rates expose patients to a higher risk of developing other comorbidities such as stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors for and prognosis of stroke in patients with gynecological cancers. A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with cervical, endometrial, and epithelial ovarian cancers. Patients were classified into three groups based on the period of stroke onset: at least one year before cancer diagnosis, within one year before cancer diagnosis to six months after the last treatment date, and six months after the last treatment date. Among the 644 patients, stroke occurred in 54 (8.4%). In univariate analysis, stroke was significantly associated with overall survival. In contrast, in multivariate analysis, stroke was significantly associated with age and hypertension, but not with overall survival. Age, pulmonary thromboembolism/deep vein thrombosis, histological grade, and tumor stage were significantly associated with overall survival. Therefore, it is important to establish an appropriate examination and treatment plan for patients with gynecologic cancers using a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates the patient's age, medical condition, and tumor characteristics rather than excessively considering the adverse effects of stroke on cancer prognosis. Aim: Smoking is harmful to human health. However, the relationship between smoking and blood pressure (BP) has not been consistent. This study aimed to analyse nurses' smoking behaviours and their relationship with BP. Methods: This cross‐sectional study recruited 128 009 nurses in 11 cities in China. They were surveyed with questionnaires including BP measurements. The main contents of the questionnaire included smoking status and other factors that might be associated with hypertension. Multiple linear regression analyses and binary logistic regression analyses were used to analyse the data. Results: The results showed there was a significant difference in the smoking rate among nurses with different characteristics (P < 0.05). For both male and female nurses, smoking was associated with increased diastolic BP and mean arterial pressure, but only with increased systolic BP of male nurses. The prevalence of hypertension among male and female nurses was not related to smoking. Conclusion: Despite a relatively low overall smoking rate, rates among some groups are high. Different cities, hospitals, and departments can combine local data and conditions to formulate targeted tobacco control measures to improve nurses' physical and mental health. Background: Previous studies examined the effects of breastfeeding on measured values of body circumferences or blood pressure during childhood. However, limited data are available for the association between child feeding and a specific disease diagnosed as central obesity or hypertension. Hence, we aimed to examine whether the type and duration of breastfeeding are associated with obesity/central obesity or hypertension in young school-aged children. Methods: We matched the data obtained from a cross-sectional survey in 2019 with retrospective breastfeeding information recorded in the database. Heights, weights, waist circumferences, and blood pressures of 8480 children in first grade of primary schools in Shanghai, China were measured to diagnose obesity, central obesity, and hypertension. Data on child feeding was collected retrospectively from clinical records. Associations between the type/duration of breastfeeding and children's measured values of body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure were analysed by linear regression. Associations between the type/duration of breastfeeding and risks of obesity, central obesity, and hypertension were analysed by generalised linear models. Results: Breastfeeding duration was inversely associated with blood pressure values in children in the first grade. Each month's increase in the duration of any breastfeeding was associated with a 0.07 mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure (P < 0.01) and a 0.05 mmHg decrease in diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.01). Any breastfeeding > one month was associated with a reduced risk of hypertension (adjusted risk ratio 0.84; 95% CI 0.73, 0.96, P = 0.01). Exclusive breastfeeding > one month was associated with a reduced risk of central obesity (adjusted risk ratio 0.76; 95% CI: 0.60, 0.96, P = 0.02). Any breastfeeding > 12 months was linked with a lower risk of hypertension (adjusted risk ratio 0.83; 95% CI 0.70, 0.98, P = 0.03). Conclusions: Lack of breastfeeding is associated with higher risks of central obesity and hypertension during middle childhood. As a potential component of the public health strategy to reduce population levels of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, breastfeeding could be a vital prevention strategy. Objective: The aim of the study is to assess the association between solid fuel use for cooking or heating and the risk of hypertension among individuals older than 45 years. Methods: Baseline questionnaires were used to collect self-reported primary cooking and heating fuel usage. Outcomes were defined as the time of first diagnosis of hypertension. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Solid fuel use for cooking was associated with a higher risk of hypertension. The association between solid fuel for cooking and hypertension remained significant among residents in north China, individuals aged 45 to 65 years, urban residents, and nonsmokers. Solid fuel for heating was associated with a higher risk of hypertension only in South China. Conclusions: Solid fuel use may result in an increased risk of hypertension. Background: Comorbidity is a common problem among elderly people, significantly damaging individuals' health and healthcare systems. However, observational studies may be susceptible to residual confounding factors and bias. The present study aimed to assess the causal effect of common chronic disease comorbidity using the Mendelian randomization (MR) approach.Methods: Data for the present study were obtained from a community survey conducted between 2018 and 2020 in four counties in Ganzhou City, southern China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method. A total of 1756 valid questionnaires were collected to analyze common chronic disease comorbidities. Genetic variants associated with hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and hyperlipidemia-related factors were selected as instrumental variables for univariate and multivariate MR analyses.Results: The self-reported prevalence of chronic disease in the older adult population in Southern China was 68.1%, with hypertension (46.1%), diabetes (10.5%), and hyperlipidemia (8.5%) being the three most common conditions. The prevalence of chronic disease comorbidity was 20.7% among the 12 chronic diseases studied. Hypertension was identified as a predictor of diabetes (OR [95% CI]: 1.114 [1.049, 1.184], p < 0.001), and diabetes mellitus was equally identified as a risk factor for hypertension (OR [95% CI]: 1.118 [1.069, 1.187], p < 0.001). Furthermore, high triglyceride levels were identified as a risk factor for hypertension (OR [95% CI]: 1.262 [1.129, 1.411], p < 0.001). In contrast to intracranial hemorrhages, hypertension had a significant impact on ischemic stroke (OR [95% CI]: 1.299 [1.161, 1.454], p < 0.001).Conclusion: The causal association between multiple cardiovascular and metabolism-related diseases is mediated by hypertension, with a bidirectional cause-and-effect relationship between hypertension and diabetes. Hypertension is a risk factor for ischemic stroke, and the hyperlipidemia-related factor triglycerides (TG) influence hypertension. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of death among urban and rural residents in China, and elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a risk factor for ASCVD. Considering the increasing burden of ASCVD, lipid management is of the utmost importance. In recent years, research on blood lipids has made breakthroughs around the world, hence a revision of China guidelines for lipid management is imperative, especially since the target lipid levels in the general population vary in respect to the risk of ASCVD. The level of LDL-C, which can be regarded as appropriate in a population without frisk factors, can be considered abnormal in people at high risk of developing ASCVD. As a result, the "Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia" were adapted into the "China Guidelines for Lipid Management" (henceforth referred to as the new guidelines) by an Experts' committee after careful deliberation. The new guidelines still recommend LDL-C as the primary target for lipid control, with CVD risk stratification to determine its target value. These guidelines recommend that moderate intensity statin therapy in adjunct with a heart-healthy lifestyle, be used as an initial line of treatment, followed by cholesterol absorption inhibitors or/and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, as necessary. The new guidelines provide guidance for lipid management across various age groups, from children to the elderly. Background: Chronic total coronary occlusion (CTO) is serious and the "last bastion" of percutaneous coronary intervention. Hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCY) are synergistic and significantly increase cardiovascular event risk. The relationship between H-type hypertension and CTO remains unclear; thus, this cross-sectional study investigated this potential association. Methods: Between January 2018 and June 2022, 1446 individuals from southwest China were recruited to participate in this study. CTO was defined as complete coronary artery occlusion persisting for over three months. H-type hypertension was defined as hypertension with plasma homocysteine levels ≥ 15 µmol/L. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to assess the association between H-type hypertension and CTO. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to determine the accuracy of H-type hypertension in predicting CTO. Results: Of the 1446 individuals, 397 had CTO, and 545 had H-type hypertension. After multivariate adjustment, the odds ratio (OR) for CTO in individuals with H-type hypertension was 2.3-fold higher (95% CI 1.01–5.26) than that in healthy controls. The risk of CTO is higher in individuals with H-type hypertension than in those with isolated HHCY and hypertension. The area under the ROC curve for CTO was 0.685 (95% CI, 0.653–0.717) for H-type hypertension. Conclusions: In southwest China, H-type hypertension is significantly related to the occurrence of CTO. Background: Thrombospondin Type 1 Domain Containing Protein 1 (THSD1) has been suggested to be a new regulator of endothelial barrier function in the angiogenesis process, preserving vascular integrity. We sought to characterize the association of THSD1 genetic variants and mRNA expression with the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) with population-based evidence. Methods: A case–control study was conducted with 843 HS cases and 1,400 healthy controls. A cohort study enrolled 4,080 participants free of stroke at baseline in 2009 and followed up to 2022. A synonymous variant, the main tag SNP rs3803264 of the THSD1 gene, was genotyped in all subjects, and peripheral leukocyte THSD1 mRNA expression was detected using RT-qPCR in 57 HS cases and 119 controls. Results: In the case–control study, rs3803264 AG/GG variations are associated with a decreased risk of HS with odd ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the dominant model of 0.788 (0.648–0.958), p = 0.017. In addition, rs3803264 and dyslipidemia had a multiplicative interaction [OR (95% CI) = 1.389 (1.032, 1.869), p = 0.030]. In the cohort study, a similar association strength of rs3803264 dominant model and the risk of HS was observed with the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 0.734 and p-value of 0.383. Furthermore, the risk of HS showed a nonlinear as THSD1 mRNA expression increased (p for non-linearity <0.001). For the subjects without hypertension, we observed THSD1 mRNA expression had a negative correlation with systolic blood pressure (SBP; ρ = −0.334, p = 0.022). We investigated the association of birthweight with overweight, obesity, and blood pressure (BP) among adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 857 participants aged 11–17 years from Liangshan, southwest China. Birthweight information was collected from the participants' parents. The participants' height, weight, and BP were measured. High birthweight was defined as a value greater than the sex-specific upper quartile. Participants were classified into four groups based on their weight change at birth and adolescence: normal weight at both time points, weight loss, weight gain, and high weight at both time points. High birthweight was positively associated with overweight and obesity in adolescence [odds ratio (95% confidence interval), OR (95% CI): 1.93 (1.33, 2.79)]. Compared with participants with normal weight at both time points, those with high weight at both time points were more likely to have elevated BP in adolescence (OR [95% CI]: 3.02 [1.65, 5.53]), while those with weight loss had similar odds of elevated BP. The sensitivity analysis results did not change significantly when high birthweight was defined alternatively as birthweight > 4 kg. Objective: A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3) gene polymorphism and essential hypertension in the Han, Miao, and Buyi populations in Guizhou China. Methods: DNA was collected from the blood samples of 353 essential hypertension patients and 342 healthy controls from Guizhou province of China. Eight polymorphisms of the NOS3 gene were genotyped using the Sequenom MassARRAY platform. For genetic analysis, SPSS 26.0, Haploview, SNPStats, SHEsis, and MDR were utilized. Results: All SNPs (rs11771443, rs1808593, rs753482, rs3918186, rs3918188, rs3918227, rs7830, and rs891512) satisfied the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test (P > 0.05). The allele and genotype frequencies of rs7830 and rs1808593 in case-control groups demonstrated significant differences (P < 0.05). Compared to the TT genotype of rs1808593, the TG or GG genotype reduced the risk of hypertension in the Miao population (OR = 0.410, 95% CI: 0.218–0.770, P = 0.006). Compared to the GG or GT genotype of rs7830, the TT genotype increased the risk of hypertension in the overall populations (OR = 1.716, 95%CI: 1.139–2.586, P = 0.010). The CATT (rs3918227-rs391818186-rs1808593-rs7830) haplotype was a risk factor for hypertension in the Miao and Han populations (OR = 1.471, 95%CI: 1.010–2.143, P = 0.044 and OR = 1.692, 95%CI: 1.124–2.545, P = 0.011). The CAGG haplotype in the Miao population was a protective factor against hypertension (OR = 0.555, 95%CI: 0.330–0.934, P = 0.025). The rs3918188, rs1808593, and rs7830 in the Miao population showed an interaction effect on hypertension (P < 0.001). The rs11771443, rs3918188, and rs7830 in the Buyi and Han populations showed an interaction effect on hypertension (P = 0.013 and P < 0.001). We focused on the association between night shift and hypertension. Hypertension is a common chronic disease and a major contributor to the global disease burden. Shift work is becoming more and more popular in modern industrial society. Therefore, it is important to explore the impact of night shift on hypertension. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of night-shift work on the risk of hypertension for improving workers' health. Methods: A total of 10,038 Chinese participants were constituted in the cross-sectional study. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were used to estimate the effect of night shift on hypertension. Results: There were higher odds of having hypertension in any night-shift workers (odds ratio [OR], 1.16 [95% confidence interval, 1.03–1.30]) when compared with day workers. Having 5 to 10 night shifts per month were significantly more likely to be hypertensive (OR, 1.19 [95% confidence interval, 1.03–1.38]). The OR for hypertension increased as the number of night shifts increased as the result of the restricted cubic spline. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and obesity can increase the risk of hypertension, but the combined effects of these two conditions on hypertension are not yet known. We collected the basic characteristics, sleep parameters, and glucose levels of subjects with a polysomnography test and divided them into four groups, according to whether they had severe OSA and obesity or not. The main effects of severe OSA and obesity and the interactions of the two on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) levels were detected using analysis of covariance. The association between obesity and severe OSA and abnormal blood pressure and their combined effects were detected with logistic regression. In total, 686 subjects were included. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, the strong main effects of obesity and severe OSA were detected in the SBP and DBP levels, with no combined effects from the two conditions on SBP or DBP. Obesity was independently associated with the presence of hyper-systolic blood pressure (hyper-SBP) and hypertension, and severe OSA was independently associated with the presence of hyper diastolic blood pressure (hyper-DBP) and hypertension. No effects of the interaction between severe OSA and obesity on the presence of abnormal blood pressure were observed. Both severe OSA and obesity were associated with hypertension, while obesity was closely associated with hyper-SBP, and severe OSA was associated with hyper-DBP. Hypertension is a common and costly public health burden in China, while the interaction effects of individual and contextual level factors on the risk of hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether the interaction effects between individual education and regional chemical fertilizer consumption are associated with the risk of hypertension based on a cross-level interaction perspective. Data was from the China Hypertension Survey (CHS) study, which used a nationally representative sample, and was conducted between 2012 and 2015. A total of 379 467 participants aged over 18 years from 221 counties in 31 provinces were included. A cross-sectional study design and two-level logistic models were conducted to investigate the cross-level interaction between individual education and regional chemical fertilizer consumption on the risk of hypertension after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Compared to individuals with high education (college or more), the adjusted OR (95%CI) for hypertension among those in the high school, middle school, and elementary school or less was 1.16 (1.12–1.21), 1.25 (1.20–1.30), and 1.49 (1.43–1.55), respectively. The association between regional chemical fertilizer consumption and hypertension was not significant. Interaction analysis showed that regional chemical fertilizer consumption was associated with an increased risk of hypertension for individuals with lower education. These patterns were consistent after stratified by sex. This study provided evidence from the Chinese population that interaction between individual education and regional chemical fertilizer was associated with risk of hypertension. Aim: To examine the optimal gestational weight gain (GWG) for Chinese pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on the Chinese‐specific body mass index (BMI) classification. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the 2017–2020 data from pregnant women with GDM in a tertiary hospital. A quadratic function model and the total predicted probability of adverse pregnancy outcomes were developed to obtain the optimal GWG. Differences in the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes between our optimal GWG recommendations and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2009 GWG guidelines were also analyzed. Results: A total of 8103 pregnant women with GDM were analyzed. Based on the Chinese‐specific BMI classification, the optimal GWG range was 11.0–17.5 kg for underweight women, 3.7–9.7 kg for normal‐weight women, −0.6 to 4.8 kg for overweight women, and − 9.8 to 4.2 kg for obese women. Excessive GWG had a higher risk of large for gestational age (LGA) (OR: 2.99, 95% CI: 2.42–3.70), macrosomia (OR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.77–3.12), pre‐eclampsia (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.37–2.65), gestational hypertension (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.24–2.19), cesarean section (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15–1.44), postpartum hemorrhage (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02–1.64); insufficient GWG had a higher risk of small for gestational age (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.20–2.75). Compared to the IOM 2009 GWG guidelines, the prevalence of macrosomia, LGA, and postpartum hemorrhage were significantly lower in pregnant women following the implementation of our recommended GWG range (p < 0.05). Background. Hypertension poses a major threat to human health, and inflammation is associated with hypertension. The monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) represents a new inflammatory indicator. However, the relationship between the MHR and hypertension remains unclear. The present study investigated the association of MHR with hypertension. Method. For this cross-sectional study, we continuously collected data from the Physical Examination Centre of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University (N = 6632). The data included patients' demographic information and clinical information including blood pressure, blood biochemical measurements, and MHR. The relationship between the MHR and hypertension was examined using different methods in univariate and multivariate logistic analysis, smooth function analysis, the threshold saturation effect analysis and subgroup analysis. Results. The results showed that MHR was positively associated with hypertension without adjustment (odds ratio [OR] = 1.10, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–1.12, P < 0.001). The positive association still existed in minimally and fully adjusted models (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.06–1.10, P < 0.001 ; OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.05–1.10, P < 0.001). Smooth function analysis of a generalized additive model revealed a continuous positive linear association between the MHR and hypertension throughout all MHR data (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.05–1.10, P < 0.001). Background Insulin resistance (IR) plays an important role in the progression of hypertension (HTN); therefore, early identification of IR is clinically important for preventing HTN. Our study aims to explore the relationship between the metabolic score for IR (METS-IR) and HTN in Chinese population who maintained non-overweight. Methods A total of 4678 adults who underwent annual health check-up in our institution from 2010 to 2017, did not have HTN at the first check-up and maintained non-overweight at follow-up were selected as subjects. The baseline METS-IR was calculated and the outcome was incident HTN. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate hazards ratios of HTN for METS-IR. Additionally, sensitive analyses and stratification analyses were used to deeply verify the relationship of METS-IR with HTN. The dose–response association between METS-IR and HTN risk was investigated using restricted the cubic spline analysis fitted for the Cox proportional hazards model. Results Compared with the first quartiles of METS-IR, the risk of incident HTN was increased by 58% [hazard ratio (HR) 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–2.22] and 96% (HR 1.96, 95% CI 1.40–2.76) in the Q3 group and the Q4 group, respectively. The results remained consistent when analyses were restricted to people without abnormal high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride or fasting plasma glucose level at baseline. A linear dose–response relationship between METS-IR and HTN risk was identified (HR 1.08, 95% CI 1.04–1.12). Conclusions The risk of incident HTN was associated with elevated METS-IR levels in non-overweight individuals. METS-IR could help predict the risk of HTN in non-overweight individuals. Background. Dietary modulation is a primary lifestyle approach for reducing the risk of hypertension. However, evidence of the potential role that a dietary taste preference plays in the risk of hypertension remains limited. Methods. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted based on the Shaanxi baseline survey of the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study. We used self-reported salt consumption and intensity preferences for sourness and spiciness to calculate the taste preference score, which was categorized into bland, moderate, and strong. A generalized linear mixed model and quantile regression were performed to estimate associations between taste preferences and hypertension/blood pressure. Results. Among 27,233 adults, 72.2% preferred a moderate taste and 21.4% preferred a strong taste. Compared with a bland taste, a stronger taste preference might be associated with a higher risk of hypertension (adjusted OR for a moderate taste = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.49; adjusted OR for a strong taste = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.15, 1.71; Ptrend = 0.002), especially in females (adjusted OR for a moderate taste = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.66; adjusted OR for a strong taste = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.32, 1.83; P t r e n d < 0.001). Quantile regression showed that the taste preference was positively associated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P5-P80) in females, with an average increase of 3.31 mmHg for a strong taste (β = 3.31, P < 0.001) and 1.77 mmHg for a moderate taste (β = 1.77, P = 0.008). Conclusions. A preference for stronger multitastes of salty, sour, and spicy might be associated with a higher risk of hypertension, especially in females. Objectives: The relationship of dietary iron intake with the risk of hypertension remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the prospective association between dietary iron intake and new-onset hypertension among Chinese adults. Design: A nationwide cohort study. Setting: Using data from seven rounds of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) from 1997 to 2015. Participants: A total of 12,245 participants without hypertension at baseline were included in this study. Exposures: Dietary intake was measured by three consecutive 24-h dietary recalls combined with a household weighing inventory. Measurements: The study outcome was new-onset hypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg or diagnosed by physician or currently under antihypertensive treatment during the follow-up. Results: During a median follow-up of 6.1 years, 4,304 (35.1%) participants developed hypertension. Overall, there was a U-shaped association between dietary total iron intake and new-onset hypertension (P for nonlinearity <0.001), with the lowest risk observed at 18.2–<22.1 mg/day (quintile 2–3). Similarly, a U-shaped association between dietary nonheme iron intake and new-onset hypertension was found (P for nonlinearity <0.001), with the lowest risk at 17.4–<21.3 mg/day (quintile 2–3). However, the association between dietary heme iron intake and new-onset hypertension followed a L-shape (P for nonlinearity <0.001), and a significantly lower risk of new-onset hypertension was found in participants with quintile 2–5 of dietary heme iron intake (adjusted HR, 0.75; 95% CI: 0.68, 0.82), compared with those in quintile 1 (<0.25 mg/day). Conclusions: The association between dietary iron and new-onset hypertension was nonlinear in Chinese adults, following a U-shape for total or nonheme iron intake, and a L-shape for heme iron intake. Background: Hypertension, a well-known risk factor, contributes to millions of deaths from cardiovascular and renal diseases worldwide. However, evidence on the association between frequency of dairy product consumption and hypertension is inconsistent. Methods: The data for the present study are from the Tongxiang baseline dataset of the China Kadoorie Biobank prospective study. A total of 53,916 participants aged 30–79 years were included in the final analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized to evaluate the association of dairy product consumption with hypertension, and multiple linear regression was conducted to assess the association of dairy product consumption with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Results: Of the 53,916 participants, 2.6% reported consuming dairy products weekly, and 44.4% had prevalent hypertension. After adjusting for socio-demographic status, lifestyle factors, BMI, waist circumference, sleep duration and snoring, when compared with participants who never consumed dairy products, the odds ratios (95% CI) for hypertension among those consuming dairy products less than once per week, and ≥ 1 time per week were 0.85 (0.77–0.95) and 0.74 (0.65–0.84), respectively. The corresponding odds ratios (95% CI) for men were 0.85 (0.71–1.02) and 0.75 (0.61–0.92), respectively (Ptrend = 0.001), and for women were 0.88 (0.76–1.01) and 0.77 (0.65–0.91), respectively. Background: Several studies have investigated the association of insulin resistance (IR) surrogates and the risk of hypertension. However, it is unclear whether there exist differences between different IR surrogates and hypertension risk. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association of four IR surrogates (triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), triglyceride-glucose index with body mass index (TyG-BMI), triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-c), and metabolic score for IR (METS-IR)) with the prevalence of hypertension. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a total of 117,056 participants. Data were extracted from a computerized database established by Rich Healthcare Group in China, which included all medical records of participants who received a health check-up from 2010 to 2016. IR surrogates were grouped into quartiles as continuous variables, and multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between different IR surrogate levels and the prevalence of hypertension. Results were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Missing data were accounted by multiple imputation. These analyses were considered as the sensitivity analysis. Meanwhile, the Bayesian network (BN) model was constructed to further evaluate the relationship between baseline characteristics and the four IR surrogates and the prevalence of hypertension, as well as the importance of every single variable for the prevalence of hypertension. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that TyG-BMI and METS-IR were independent risk factors for the prevalence of hypertension that increased significantly with increasing TyG-BMI and METS-IR (p for trend < 0.001). The area under the TyG-BMI curve (AUC) was 0.681 [95% CI: 0.677–0.685], and the cut-off value was 199.5, with a sensitivity and specificity of 65.57% and 61.18%, respectively. While the area under the METS-IR curve (AUC) was 0.679 [95% CI: 0.674–0.683], and the cut-off value was 33.61, with a sensitivity and specificity of 69.67% and 56.67%, respectively. The BN model presented that among these four IR surrogates and related variables, TyG-BMI was the most important predictor of hypertension prevalence, with a significance of 34%. The results before and after multiple imputation were similar. Conclusion: TyG-BMI and METS-IR were independent risk factors for the prevalence of hypertension. Little is known about the impact of modifiable risk factors on blood pressure (BP) trajectories and their associations with hypertension (HTN). We aimed to identify BP trajectories in normotensive Chinese adults and explore their influencing factors and associations with HTN. We used data from 3436 adults with at least four BP measurements between 1989 and 2018 in the China Health and Nutrition Survey, an ongoing cohort study. We measured BP using mercury sphygmomanometers with appropriate cuff sizes in all surveys. We used group-based trajectory modelling to identify BP trajectories between 1989 and 2009 and multiple logistic and Cox regression models to analyse their influencing factors and associations with HTN in 2011–2018. We identified five systolic blood pressure (SBP) trajectories, 'Low-increasing (LI)', 'Low–stable (LS)', 'Moderate-increasing (MI)', 'High-stable (HS)' and 'Moderate-decreasing (MD)', and four diastolic blood pressure (DBP) trajectories classified as 'Low-increasing (LI)', 'Moderate–stable (MS)', 'Low-stable (LS)' and 'High-increasing (HI)'. People with higher physical activity (PA) levels and lower waist circumferences (WC) were less likely to be in the SBP LI, MI, HS and MD groups (P < 0·05). People with higher fruit and vegetable intakes, lower WCs and salt intakes and higher PA levels were less likely to be in the DBP LI, MS and HI groups (P < 0·05). Participants in the SBP HS group (hazard ratio (HR) 2·01) or the DBP LI, MS and HI groups (HR 1·38, 1·40, 1·71, respectively) had higher risks of HTN (P < 0·05). Background. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global threat that pushes healthcare to its limits. Hypertension is one of the most common risk factors for cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 and is strongly associated with disease severity and mortality. To date, clinical mechanisms by which hypertension leads to increased risk in COVID-19 are still unclear. Furthermore, additional factors might increase these risks, such as the consideration of age and sex, which are of interest when in search of personalized treatments for hypertensive COVID-19 patients. Methods. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 543 COVID-19 patients in seven provinces of China to examine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in this population and to determine risk factors of hypertensive COVID-19 patients. We also used univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with hypertensive COVID-19 patients in different age and sex subgroups. Results. Among the enrolled COVID-19 patients, the median age was 47 years (interquartile range (IQR) 34.0–57.0), and 99 patients (18.23%) were over 60 years old. With regard to comorbidities, 91 patients (16.75%) were diagnosed with hypertension, followed by diabetes, coronary disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Of the hypertensive COVID-19 patients, 51 (56.04%) were male. Multivariable analysis showed that old age, comorbid diabetes or coronary heart disease on admission, increased D-dimer, increased glucose, and decreased lymphocyte count were independent risk factors associated with hypertensive COVID-19 patients. Elevated total bilirubin (odds ratio [OR]: 1.014, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.23–1.05; p = 0.043) and triglycerides (OR: 1.173, 95% CI: 0.049–1.617; p = 0.007) were found to be associated with elderly hypertensive COVID-19 patients. In addition, we found that decreased lymphocytes, basophil, high-density lipoprotein, and increased fibrinogen and creatinine were related to a higher risk of disease severity in male patients. The most common abnormal clinical findings pertaining to female hypertensive COVID-19 patients were hemoglobin, total bile acid, total protein, and low-density lipoprotein. Conclusions. Factors associated with increased risk of hypertensive COVID-19 patients were identified. Results to the different age and sex subgroups in our study will allow for better possible personalized care and also provide new insights into specific risk stratification, disease management, and treatment strategies for COVID-19 patients with hypertension in the future. Background: We aimed to investigate the relationship between a dietary pattern associated with C‐reactive protein (CRP) levels and trajectories of blood pressure in Chinese adults. Methods: This prospective cohort study consisted of 7020 adults using three waves of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (2009, 2011 and 2015). Group‐based trajectory modelling was used to identify trajectories of blood pressure. The dietary pattern associated with C‐reactive protein (CRP) was measured using the reduced rank regression method. Logistic regression models were fit to explore the associations of the scores on inflammation‐related dietary patterns and trajectories of blood pressure. Results: We identified a dietary pattern associated with CRP at baseline, which was high in red meat, snacks and nuts, but low in grains, poultry and fish. The odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) pertaining to the highest dietary pattern score group for the high‐normal systolic blood pressure (SBP) group and the high SBP group were 1.316 (1.155–1.498) and 1.295 (1.030–1.627), respectively. However, no significant association was observed between dietary patterns and trajectories of diastolic blood pressure (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Dietary pattern associated with CRP resulted in higher risk of high‐normal and high levels of SBP. Obesity is thought to be a risk factor for hypertension, and BMI (body mass index) is widely used to evaluate the obesity and hypertension risk. However, the abdominal obesity and visceral fat accumulation are more obvious in the East Asian population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of fatty liver for hypertension in the Chinese population. We compared the predictive value of BMI and fatty liver for the hypertension and its complication in 1386 patients with hypertension in Shanghai China. In the analysis of 1386 patients with hypertension in Shanghai China, we found that the prevalence and risk of hypertension and its complications were higher in the fatty liver group than that in the group of BMI≥24. Furthermore, the areas under the ROC curve of fatty liver for hypertension and its complications were superior to that of BMI. These results suggested that fatty liver is a more sensitive early warning for hypertension and its complication than BMI in Chinese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mental stress has been recognized as an essential risk factor for hypertension. Therefore, experts specializing in cardiology, psychiatry, and Traditional Chinese Medicine organized by the Psycho-Cardiology Group of College of Cardiovascular Physicians of Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Hypertension Group of Chinese Society of Cardiology proposed the expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of adult mental stress-induced hypertension in March 2021, which includes the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the mental stress-induced hypertension. This consensus will hopefully facilitate the clinical practice of this disorder. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the primary global sources of psychosocial stressors since the beginning of 2020, and the revision of this expert consensus in 2022 has increased the relevant content. This consensus consists of Part A and Part B. Purpose. Northeast China is a region with a serious aging population. There are fewer articles on epidemiological surveys on the prevalence of chronic diseases in aging areas of China. The study is aimed at understanding the prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) in Liaoning Province, northeast China, and analyzing the risk factors for these chronic diseases. Methods. A questionnaire survey and physical examination were conducted in 5008 permanent residents in 2 streets (Henan Street and Hebei Street) covered by Liuerbao Central Health Center in Liaoyang and 4 villages (Miaogou Village, Wangjia Village, Heyan Village, and Shuiquan Village) covered by Shuiquan Health Center in Tianshui Town of Liaoyang from January 2020 to December 2020. Results. A total of 4990 patients were included. The prevalence rates of hypertension, DM, dyslipidemia, and obesity in residents in Liaoyang were 54.13%, 12.30%, 43.31%, and 20.52%, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension and DM was highest in both male and female patients aged 40-60 years, which was higher than that in the other age groups (P < 0.05). The prevalence of dyslipidemia was highest in men over 60 years old and women 18 − < 40 years old. Obesity was most common in men aged over 60 and in women 40 − < 60 years old. The proportion of male smokers in all age groups was significantly higher than that of female smokers. Smoking, dyslipidemia, and significant overweight or obesity are common risk factors for hypertension and DM. Conclusion. In Liaoyang, northeast China, the prevalence of noninfectious chronic diseases was high, and the prevalence rate in people over 40 years old was significantly higher than that in people under 40 years old.
