Teachers' discourse is instrumental in facilitating the emergence of students' scientific discourse. Many studies have shown that teachers' cognitive demand levels and discursive moves are the main factors in eliciting students' scientific discourse, but few focus on whole-class (non-grouped) teaching settings. This research explored the correlation between teachers' discourse strategies (the cognitive demand of questions and discursive moves) and students' scientific discourse quality in whole-class teaching without intervention. Applying the chi-square test, correspondence analysis, and content analysis, the study revealed the correlation structure between teachers' discourse strategies and students' scientific discourse quality. The teachers' lower (remembering and understanding) cognitive demand questions, primarily elicited students' low-quality (everyday discourse and elementary) scientific discourse responses. High (analyzing and creating) cognitive demand questions, primarily elicited students' high-quality (moderate and advanced) scientific discourse responses. The teachers' discursive moves also elicited students' high-quality scientific discourse, particularly following the teacher's high cognitive demand questions. High-control discursive moves (e.g., "providing opinion") elicited students' moderate scientific discourse responses, and low-control discursive moves ("allocation and organization") elicited students' moderate and advanced scientific discourse responses. Based on these findings, suggestions were made for science teachers.

Developing effective oral business English (OBE) curricula requires clearly understanding student needs. This study evaluated the speaking needs of Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduates majoring in business English for specific purposes (ESP), aiming to inform the design of a teaching module that bridges the gap between current speaking abilities and the escalating demand for advanced communication skills in business contexts. A needs analysis questionnaire, reflecting the first phase of the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation), was administered to 398 randomly selected participants using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Results revealed that while students struggle with speaking errors and lack communication confidence, they favor interactive activities such as presentations, discussions, and role-plays. Concerns about current OBE pedagogy and materials highlight a need for more collaborative learning and teacher support. Statistical analysis using independent-samples t-test and one-way ANOVA showed no significant differences in speaking needs based on gender, age, years of English study, or English proficiency. However, a significant difference was reported between fourth-year and third-year students. This study offers some insights for developing more effective interventions to address the specific needs of Chinese business English undergraduates in Chinese ESP education.

In 2023, China leads the world in the number of Open Online Courses (OOC, over 64500) and learners (over 1.88 billion). In this article, we provide a brief review of the development of OOCs in China and outline the current situation of Chinese OOC focusing on learning platforms, course size and structure, and micro-credential courses. We also summarize the development and application of OOC in China focusing on national policy guidance, the organizational structure of OOCs, different modes of OOC development, and the establishment of a standardized quality assurance system. We also discuss the OOC credit recognition, blended learning, and multi-school collaborative teaching. Finally, we consider the future development trend of OOCs in China from the perspective of improving digital teaching literacy of instructors and expanding international exchange and cooperation.

Objective: To examine the manifestation of cognitive control deficit of children with different levels of hyperactivity, an "at risk" dimension for ADHD. Method: A group of children with high hyperactivity (N = 40) and another group of children with low levels of hyperactivity (N = 38) performed a modified stop-signal anticipation task, a revised Go/NoGo task, and the AX-continuous performance test (AX-CPT). Results: Children with higher levels of hyperactivity displayed: (1) significantly prolonged stop signal reaction time (SSRT) in the modified stop-signal anticipation task; (2) no notable differences in commission errors in the revised Go/NoGo task; (3) increased reaction time (RT) in stop-signal task and Go/NoGo task with increased probabilities of stop or NoGo signal; and (4) positive proactive behavioral index scores in AXCPT. Conclusion: The results suggested that children with heightened hyperactivity exhibited impaired reactive control, especially for responses already underway, but preserved proactive control. Further studies concerning these children are warranted.

With the introduction and implementation of core literacy, scientific thinking (ST) has become an essential goal and key dimension of science teaching. At present, there is no agreement on how to cultivate students' ST. This study took 238 sixth grade students from a public primary school in urban China as research sample, built a theoretical model of scientific thinking development based on the theory of the Bronfenbrenner' ecological systems theory, and used multiple data to explore and analyze the impact path of ST development of primary school students using the fuzzy sets of qualitative comparative analysis method (fsQCA). The development of urban primary school students' ST is the result of multiple factors at the level of individual drive, family environment, school teaching, and social resources. The result of data analysis showed that the influence path of ST development of urban primary school students driven by multiple factors includes three paths: parent participation leading, scientific practice leading, and home-school-community integration. We have interpreted the influence mechanism of each path in detail and put forward the enlightenment for science education policy and practice.

The mental health problems have been increasingly threatening the development of adolescence in China, it is very necessary to explore the protective factors preventing adolescents' negative mental health. Previous studies suggested that growth mindset benefits mental health. However, the internal psychological mechanism underlying this relationship is still unclear. This study investigated the relation between growth mindset and negative mental health among Chinese adolescence, and simultaneously tested the mediating effect of psychological resilience and the moderating role of gender in the mediation process of this relation. A total of 1204 middle school students (624 male students and 580 female students) in China completed measures on growth mindset, psychological resilience, and negative mental health. The results revealed that growth mindset not only directly predicted negative mental health, but also indirectly predicted negative mental health through the mediating path of psychological resilience. Moreover, the mediating effect of psychological resilience in the relationship between growth mindset and negative mental health was moderated for females and not males. These findings indicated that intervention focus on growth mindset could improve psychological resilience and prevent negative mental health among middle school students.

Previous studies have suggested that bullying may be contagious in adolescents. The present study examined whether ego depletion mediated the association between peer bullying and participant bullying and whether the mediating process was moderated by participant trait self-control. A sample of 2217 Chinese high school students (16.92 ± 0.94 years; 1068 boys and 1084 girls) were invited to fill in the questionnaires. The results reveal that after controlling for gender, grade and neuroticism, ego depletion partially mediates the positive relationship between peer bullying and participant bullying. Further, participant trait self-control moderates the relationship between peer bullying and participant bullying and that between peer bullying and participant ego depletion. That is, the strength of the contagion effect is lower in adolescents with high trait self-control compared to those with low trait self-control. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence of the contagion of bullying in adolescents. Limitations and implications for research and practice are discussed.

Several studies have demonstrated the relevance of job demands-resources theory in examining the subjective well-being of Chinese university teachers. Nevertheless, the specific impact and mechanisms of various dimensions of job demands and resources on faculty members' subjective well-being are not well understood. This study seeks to identify the primary predictors of subjective well-being and to explore the connection between specific job demands-resources and subjective well-being through an examination of the sequential mediation of work stress and work-life balance. Questionnaires were completed by a total of 2302 faculty members from 302 universities in China. Correlation analysis and path analysis were employed to examine the relationships between job demands-resources and subjective well-being, as well as their influencing mechanisms. Job demands measured by work hours have a significant negative impact on the subjective well-being of university faculty, with teaching hours emerging as the primary negative predictor. Conversely, job resources have a significantly positive effect on faculty's subjective well-being, particularly decision participation, job security and extensive training, which serve as positive predictors. The relationship between job demands and faculty's subjective well-being is mediated by their work stress, and is further serially mediated by their work stress and work-life balance. Similar patterns are observed in the influence mechanism of job resources on subjective well-being.

The present study sought to understand the nature and level of foreign language (FL) anxiety among primary school students and the relationship between FL anxiety and FL achievement. Changes in FL anxiety across groups of three primary school years were also examined. A total of 631 (324 male, 307 female) primary school students aged 9-11 years completed the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) that measured students' FL anxiety. Our participants' FL achievements as measured by low-stakes regular assessments and high-stakes formal examinations were also collected. On average, primary school students reported levels of FL anxiety comparable to those of adults observed in previous studies. Factor analysis on FLCAS generated four components of FL anxiety: communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, test anxiety and negative attitude towards classroom. Correlation analyses showed that students' FL anxiety was inversely correlated with their FL achievements. The correlation was stronger for formal examinations with higher stakes as compared to regular assessments with lower stakes. Finally, the correlation strengthened as a function of higher instructional level. Results are discussed in relation to previous research. Implications to FL education are also considered.

Learning engagement is malleable to environmental change. An important learning environment created by teacher-student interactions is perceived teacher autonomy support, which may trigger learning engagement directly and/or indirectly by enhancing academic self-efficacy. In this study, we apply a network approach to explore the relationships between the specific facets of perceived teacher autonomy support, academic self-efficacy and learning engagement, and a sample consisting of 215 students in the fifth and sixth grades from a primary school in Changchun of China is used. Node centrality indicators and the accuracy and stability of the network are also calculated. The results reveal that there are no edges between the three facets of perceived teacher autonomy support and the three facets of learning engagement, and the shortest path connecting the two constructs is through academic ability self-efficacy. Furthermore, learning support, academic ability self-efficacy, and dedication have the top three strengths in the network, which indicates that the three facets are more closely related to other facets of the network.

Guangxi is a border area where ethnic minorities are distributed, with poor economic development foundation, slow growth, relatively traditional, high turnover rate and outdated education. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact and to identify the path of principals' transformational leadership on teachers' teaching effectiveness in ethnic autonomous region of China. A regression analysis survey design was adopted to collect the data from the teachers of elementary schools. Based on 5-point Likert Scale of 771 questionnaires from Guangxi Province of China, the survey concluded: (1) principals' transformational leadership, teachers' organizational commitment, and teachers' teaching effectiveness differed significantly by gender and age, (2) principals' transformational leadership significantly influenced teachers' teaching effectiveness, in addition, teachers' organization commitment can partially mediate the effects, (3) gender can moderate the path of principals' transformational leadership to teachers' organization commitment, specifically, male teachers carry more weight. The study findings may serve as a guide for further research on management and leadership of leaders and members in educational organizations.

Although questionnaire surveys are widely applied in second-language research, there is still little research on the application of questionnaire among early career researchers. Problems such as the lack of details concerning why the questionnaire survey is adopted, how the questionnaire is constructed, and how the survey is administered and reported are prevalent in student teachers' research proposals or theses, which greatly impairs the quality of their academic work. However, few studies have been conducted to address these problems. This study aims to explore the real situation of the questionnaire survey application by examining student teachers' perceptions of a questionnaire survey and their application of this research method to their theses. Using a mixed-method approach, the study collected quantitative and qualitative data from 138 student teachers, including 103 fresh undergraduates and 35 post-graduates. Quantitative data analysis used descriptive statistics, while qualitative data analysis used semi-structured interviews and content analysis. The study found that: (1) student teachers had some basic but unsystematic perceptions of the questionnaire survey. They had insufficient awareness of the rules of writing good questions, piloting questionnaires, sampling strategies, doing reliability, and validity analysis, etc. (2) Most student teachers developed questionnaires based on existing questionnaires without explaining reasons and adjustments. They introduced questionnaire design in their theses in an incomplete way, with piloting, selecting sample strategies, and statistical analysis methods often missing. Thus, some pedagogical implications can be drawn to improve student teachers' awareness and competencies of the questionnaire survey.

In conventional ancient Chinese poetry learning, students tend to be under-motivated and fail to understand many aspects of poetry. As generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has been applied to education, image-GAI (iGAI) provides great opportunities for students to generate visualized images based on their descriptions of poems, and to situate students in a context similar to what a poem describes. In addition, the progressive prompt is a strategy that can progressively provide students with clues and guidance in technology-enhanced learning environments. Hence, this study proposed a progressive prompts-based image-GAI (PP-iGAI) approach to support students' ancient Chinese poetry learning. To evaluate its effectiveness, the present study employed a quasi-experiment design and recruited 80 fifth-grade elementary school students to engage in one of two conditions: one class was assigned as the experimental group and adopted the PP-iGAI approach, while the other class was assigned as the control group and used the conventional prompt-based iGAI (C-iGAI) approach. The results revealed that the PP-iGAI approach could better promote students' learning achievement, extrinsic motivation, problem-solving awareness, critical thinking, and learning performance. In addition, no significant differences were found in the two groups' cognitive load. Moreover, the results of the interview disclosed the learning perceptions and experiences of both groups. Accordingly, the present study can provide a reference not only for ancient Chinese poetry learning but also for the application of GAI in educational fields for future research.

A national survey of basic education teaching-research institutions was conducted as the first nationwide comprehensive survey that involved teaching-research officers and institutions in China. The structures and functions of the provincial, prefectural, and county teaching-research institutions, as well as their role differentiation, were analyzed. The future position and development of teaching-research institutions remain important for teachers' professional development, as well as the development of teaching and research.

Digital citizenship participation refers to the utilization of digital technology by individuals or groups for the purpose of engaging in networked participatory behaviors. It involves four interconnected elements: individual, policy, political, and social participation. This study surveyed 446 college students from a private university in China and conducted interviews to explore their digital citizenship participation. It is found that college students' digital citizen participation is characterized by "strong individual interest-driven participation", "weak political concern", and "good digital citizen literacy". In order to improve college students' participation as digital citizens, it is crucial to cultivate digital literacy by applying the core competency framework of digital citizenship as a guiding principle. To create a sustainable path for students' participation, a four-pronged approach is proposed involving multi-stakeholders, namely society, government, schools, and teachers.

This research investigated the impact of processing instruction (PI) on the acquisition of the English third-person singular present tense by Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners and whether this effect would extend to the acquisition of other language components. This study featured the pretest-immediate-posttest design and participants were required to participate in all tests (pretest, immediate posttest, delayed posttest). Two classes were assigned to receive PI and Traditional Instruction (TI) respectively, while another class served as the control group. A language background check was conducted 2 weeks before the main experiment. And after three consecutive class hours, there is an immediate posttest and a delayed posttest in 2 weeks. By comparing the results of the three tests, the study measured and compared the primary effects, secondary transfer-of-training (TOT) effects, and cumulative TOT effects of PI and TI. The findings showed that both PI and TI had significant effects, although they differed in the extent and duration of improvement in acquisition effectiveness. PI was found to be superior to TI, which could be reflected in primary and two TOT effects except the interpretation tasks related to passive voice. This study suggests that PI can be utilized in grammar teaching due to its efficacy in teaching specific linguistic structures and its transfer-of-training effects on other grammar rules.

In Chinese universities, most English majors are taught by teachers, and students attend classes and do homework. Students are often passive in their study, which can make them lose study interest, negatively affect their study and cause boredom in class. Although previous studies have studied the class-related boredom of some English courses, they have not compared the level of it between different English courses. Besides, in previous studies, study interest and perceived autonomy support, two factors that affect class-related boredom, have received a lot of attention, while student enthusiasm has not received enough attention. Based on Control Value Theory, this study examines the degree of class-related boredom experienced by English majors in various English courses from the three factors including study interest, perceived autonomy support and student enthusiasm in an effort to diminish it in a more focused manner. The respondents are 884 English majors (94.1% female) from a university in Shanxi Province, China. And SPSS 26.0 is used for descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis. Studies show that Advanced English Listening has the lowest degree of class-related boredom, but Basic English has the highest one. This study also finds that study interest, perceived autonomy support and student enthusiasm in English major courses are significantly negatively correlated with class-related boredom.

Kahoot!, a game-based student response system, is increasingly being incorporated into classrooms to maintain student engagement, improve classroom dynamics, and enhance learning outcomes. However, empirical studies exploring how using Kahoot! affects university students' learning, particularly in China, are scant. This exploratory, one-group, mixed-methods study investigates the effects of Kahoot! usage on pre-service teachers' academic achievement and perceptions within a Modern Educational Technology course in China. The results reveal that integrating Kahoot! into the course appears to positively impact students' test scores. Pre-service teachers maintain positive perceptions of using the tool in terms of its perceived learning effect, expected outcome, entertainment, engagement, and competition. Furthermore, the majority of pre-service teachers would like to use Kahoot! for future learning and teaching. The study underscores the potential of Kahoot! to improve pre-service teachers' learning outcomes, providing implications and recommendations for future practice and research.

While feedback literate teachers play critical roles in enhancing feedback efficacy and students' learning, there is a paucity of studies on writing teacher feedback literacy. To address this issue, this study draws from the notion of teacher feedback literacy to explore two second language (L2) writing teachers' feedback practices in the context of L2 writing for doctoral publishing at a Chinese research-intensive university. The analysis of the interviews, classroom observations and such textual data as the participants' profile sheets and course materials informs the development of a contextualised, two-dimension framework of teacher feedback literacy, encompassing feedback design and process management. The first dimension features an integrated, purposeful and enabling design of feedback practices that aligns with the design of curriculum and teaching, and addresses specific pedagogical goals and practical constraints arising from the teaching context. The second dimension involves meticulous management of feedback process to ensure effective feedback enactment in teaching, contributing to developing student feedback literacy. This dimension underscores students' skills development, as well as internal and external feedback interactions characterised by varying patterns of student feedback engagement. The paper concludes with implications for L2 writing feedback research and practices.

Given that input-based language and literacy environments provide socioculturally-enriched contexts for bilingual and biliteracy acquisition, the current study aims to explore the contribution of early input in various sociocultural contexts to later biliteracy development among ­college-level Chinese heritage language (CHL) students. A group of CHL students (N = 195) participated in this study and completed a background survey about their early oral and print experiences in different sociocultural contexts. Biliteracy measurements including Chinese-English bilingual morphological awareness and reading ability were administered to the participants. Drawing on multivariate analyses, the study verified both intralingual and interlingual contributions of input-based experiences to biliteracy development. The study suggests that (1) community and after-school language and literacy support can have a long-term impact on the maintenance of heritage language literacy skills. (2) heritage language input experiences do not create obstacles for dominant language literacy development. (3) heritage language literacy input provides facilitations for the abstraction of bilingual structures and units.

Based on ecological systems theory and the genetic and environmental research paradigm, the current study explored the effect of school interpersonal relationship quality (peer and teacher-student) on adolescent depression and the role of perceived stress and the OXTR gene. Based on the statistical power of previous G*E interaction studies, A follow-up survey was conducted with 603 Chinese adolescents (average age = 14.76 ± 0.72 years at the time of the initial measurement; range: 13 to 15) using a questionnaire method (Short Form of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, The Chinese version of Perceived Stress Scale, short form of Friendship Quality Questionnaire and Teacher-student Relationship) and DNA typing technique. The study found that (1) school interpersonal relationship quality influenced adolescent depression; (2) perceived stress fully mediated the relationship between school interpersonal relationship quality and adolescent depression; (3) the OXTR gene rs2254298 and rs53576 polymorphisms moderated both the direct pathway and the second half of the indirect pathway. Specifically, individuals carrying the rs2254298 polymorphism A/G genotype and the rs53576 polymorphism A genotype exhibited a significantly enhanced effect of interpersonal relationship quality and perceived stress on adolescent depression, supporting the differential susceptibility model.

The manner in which educators use commands, a form of language that serves to guide and regulate behaviour, constitutes an essential component of children's learning experiences in relation to language and social interactions. This study investigated nine Chinese and nine Japanese educators' use of commanding language in educator-child free play interactions. Totally, 4296 clauses generated by the educators were analysed, drawn on systemic functional linguistic theory that classifies command based on its semantic feature. The results show that Chinese educators generally uttered more commanding language than Japanese educators. The proportion of direct & non-suggestive commands (revealing speakers' authority) dominated in both cohorts, yet Chinese educators rated significantly higher than Japanese educators. The proportion of indirect and suggestive commands (carrying negotiation tones) in Japanese educators' language was significantly higher than Chinese educators. The effect of child age on the educators' commanding language was identified. Compared to the Chinese educators, Japanese educators uttered much less commands when interacting with children under four years, however, the gap was narrowed when communicating with children above four years. The findings illustrate how the educators create culturally-different language experiences for children in daily interactions, which has implications for worldwide preschool education in multicultural contexts.

Due to the digital revolution, online education based on the B2B2C (Business to Business to Consumer) model is growing Understanding students' expectations, concerns, and experiences of these courses are crucial to the successful of education. Based on the research framework of value co-creation and value co-destruction and the theory of social practice, this paper adopts online content analysis to study the comment data of Tencent Classroom to establish a theoretical framework of practical value for students' experience in B2B2C online education. Six categories of value experience are identified, namely, technical effect, online teaching, learning interaction, course support, recommendation, and thanking. Then, based on the practice types of co-creation, co-destruction, co-recovery, and co-reduction, the research reveals value formation in the online teaching experience. Subsequently, the formation of experiential value in the response situation is discussed, and the practice experience of value co-creation and value co-destruction is recognized. This study explores the online education experience of B2B2C mode, which helps to deepen the management of B2B2C mode education. At the same time, this study establishes a thematic framework of value co-creation and co-destruction for online education experience research and provides a new theoretical perspective of management science for related research.

This paper proposes to use depth perception to represent raters' decision in holistic evaluation of ESL essays, as an alternative medium to conventional form of numerical scores. The researchers verified the new method's accuracy and inter/intra-rater reliability by inviting 24 ESL teachers to perform different representations when rating 60 essays written by Chinese ESL learners. During numerical representation, the raters expressed their evaluation in the form of numbers, while with the DP-based method, the raters expressed their evaluation by marking distances with nail tags on a wood ruler with hidden scale marks. Then the researchers translated the distance results into numbers and compared the accuracy and inter/intra-rater consistency of the two approaches by referring to these essays' criteria scores from eight expert raters. The results showed that DP-based method could improve raters' performance, producing more similar results to experts' scores, with higher consistency both among different raters and within the same individual rater.

Considering the real-world dilemma of leaders' high long-term orientation and employees' insufficient innovative behaviors in practice, this study systematically explored the relationship between leaders' long-term orientation and employees' innovative behaviors using challenge and threat appraisals as the mediating variables and promotion focus as the moderating variable. An empirical analysis was performed on 348 two-stage leader-employee matching questionnaires collected from emerging industries in China. Leaders' long-term orientation was positively related to employees' innovative behaviors overall, and had positive and negative indirect relationships with employees' innovative behaviors via employees' challenge and threat appraisals, respectively. Employees' promotion focus positively moderated the relationship between leaders' long-term orientation and employees' challenge appraisal, negatively moderated the relationship between leaders' long-term orientation and employees' threat appraisals, and further moderated the mediating role of challenge or threat appraisal in the relationship between leaders' long-term orientation and employees' innovative behaviors. This study revealed the relationship between leaders' long-term orientation on employees' innovative behaviors and its boundaries. It expands theoretical research on leaders' long-term orientation and employees' innovative behaviors.

Three experiments explored how retrieval practice and corrective feedback affect a third language (L3) vocabulary learning. In the first two experiments, Chinese-English bilinguals without prior French language experience studied English (Second Language, L2)--French (L3) word pairs in repeated studying or retrieval practice without (Experiment 1)/with (Experiment 2) corrective feedback. A final recognition test was administered after a 30-min retention interval. Experiment 3 was identical to Experiment 2 in all respects, except that Chinese (First Language, L1)--French (L3) word pairs were used as study materials. Experiment 1 found that repeated studying led to greater accuracy and faster response time on the final test than retrieval practice without feedback. However, the opposite results were found in Experiment 2: retrieval practice with feedback yielded superior performance compared with repeated studying. The benefit of retrieval practice plus feedback was also found in Experiment 3, while it produced larger gains than Experiment 2. These results demonstrate that retrieval practice plus feedback is a powerful learning strategy, and L1-L3 learning is more effective than L2-L3 learning for L3 vocabulary learning. Our findings support the bifurcation model of the retrieval practice effect.

Although the educational potential of social media has been widely acknowledged, it remains unclear whether social media use might present opportunities for the development of math identity. This study drew on the socialization framework of math identity to examine the relationships between social media use for math learning, bicultural identity integration, ethnic-math beliefs and math identity among ethnic minority high school students in China. Structural equation modelling results showed that (a) social media use was positively related to math identity; (b) high bicultural identity integration was positively associated with math identity, while biased ethnic-math beliefs were negatively related to math identity and (c) social media use suppressed the socialization process of math identity, weakening the maladaptive roles of low bicultural identity integration and biased ethnic-math beliefs in shaping math identity. Our findings highlight the beneficial role of social media use in student math learning. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

This study explored the effect of parental emotion socialization behavior (ESB) on depressive symptoms with a focus on the mediating effect of emotion regulation and the moderating role of family cohesion. A total of 236 Chinese adolescents were surveyed and reported on parental ESB, family cohesion, emotion dysregulation, and depressive symptoms. The results indicated that parental ESB toward negative emotions was associated with adolescents' depressive symptoms, as mediated by emotion dysregulation. Moreover, higher levels of family cohesion both enhanced the negative relationships between supportive ESB toward anger/sadness and emotion dysregulation and strengthened the positive relationship between non-supportive parental ESB toward sadness and emotion dysregulation. These findings clarify the interactive effects of multiple components of emotional parenting, reveal the double-edged effects of family cohesion in the association between parental ESB and depressive symptoms in adolescents, and highlight the importance of evaluating the family emotional context in research and clinical interventions.

College students are currently facing various crises due to psychological issues, driving universities to prioritise their mental health. Perceived overqualification negatively affects students' well-being. Drawing on the person-organisation fit theory, we propose that perceived overqualification reduces students' organisational identification, study engagement, and personal accomplishment. Furthermore, serving as a student leader and the frequency of extracurricular activities (ECA) participation play moderating roles. We conducted a two-wave survey with 423 freshmen at a university in China. Results showed that perceived overqualification negatively affected all three outcomes. In addition, serving as a student leader mitigated the negative effects of perceived overqualification on organisational identification and personal accomplishment, whereas the moderating effect of the frequency of ECA participation was not significant. Nonetheless, a supplementary analysis found that when students participated in ECA related to social practice, their perceived overqualification enhanced their personal accomplishment. Finally, our theoretical contributions to the existing literature are discussed, and suggestions are proposed for universities to impede the harmful effects of students' perceived overqualification.

Objective: The present study aims to examine whether secondhand smoke exposure (SHSE) in university students can affect three indices of self-satisfaction related to depression as indiced by appearance, weight, and freedom of life choice. Participants: We collected data from 740 nonsmoking students in the summer of 2018, of which 57.84% were exposed to secondhand smoke. Methods: Depressive symptoms, SHSE, smoking status, weight satisfaction, appearance satisfaction, and freedom of life choice were self-reported via a questionnaire. Results: The generalized linear analyses revealed that SHSE was linked to lower scores of perceived freedom of life choice but not significantly associated with weight nor appearance satisfaction. The mediation analyses indicated that perceived freedom of life choice fully mediated the association between SHSE and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: These findings shed light on the importance of SHSE and its effects on mental health in university students. Preventive strategies should therefore locally target university campuses.

Robotics education has received widespread attention in K-12 education. Studies have pointed out that in robotics courses, learners face challenges in learning abstract content, such as constructing a robot with a good structure and writing programs to drive a robot to complete specific learning tasks. The present study proposed the embodied learning-based computer programming approach and applied it to the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics course. To evaluate its effectiveness, a quasi-experiment was conducted in one public primary school to explore its effects on students' learning achievement, learning motivation, learning attitudes, learning engagement, and cognitive load. The experimental group (40 students) adopted the embodied learning-based computer programming approach, while the control group (40 students) adopted the conventional computer programming approach. The results showed that the experimental group had significantly better learning achievement in robotics than the control group, and that there was no significant difference in the cognitive load of the two groups. In terms of learning motivation, although both groups showed improvement, the experimental group had higher intrinsic learning motivation. In addition, the experimental group outperformed the control group with regard to learning attitudes and learning engagement (including cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement). Accordingly, this study could contribute to future research for developing more effective robotics teaching approaches and computer programming activity design.

Education systems worldwide have shown much interest in "21st Century Competencies." In response to the call for better assessment of these competencies, we draw on a 4Cs framework (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking) and develop the 21st Century Competencies Scale-4C on a sample of 5857 Grades Four to Nine Chinese students. The Scale demonstrates good validity and reliability, yet statistical variance exists across the urban and the rural subsamples. Our discussion revolves around rural-urban disparity. Our findings provide insights into policy, practice, and research regarding 21st Century Competencies that account for sociocultural dynamics within student populations. These findings may have implications for understanding 21st Century Competencies elsewhere.

The starting reasoning and promoting switch from intuitive system 1 to deliberate system 2 for provoking creative thinking is lacking feasible model, especially during the global pandemic. We established a visible, trainable and learnable (VTL) model with digital technique to promote this dual switch for creative thinking. This study was registered this project in Chinese clinical trial registry(Registration number: ChiCTR2200065100; Date of registration: 10-27,2022). Considering the education equity for each class, we performed this study in formal college classes utilizing a self-controlled study by testing the related indicators. We performed the VTL model and evaluated the related indicators in questionnaire from students who entered University in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 in the same major and with the same knowledge background. And we found that this model helped students to get the positive effect of other psychological processes on starting human reasoning. What's more, this model promoted social factors to provoke the switch from intuitive system 1 to deliberate system 2 in students' reasoning. With this model, students had a better performance in the innovative initiative and a better master the content in the class, and also offered significantly more problem-solving solutions. Finally, digital technique also accelerated internal switch. This VTL model with digital technologies could significantly promote the dual switching, especially during COVID-19 pandemic.

This article examines the formation of social capital and the relevance of guanxi (a Chinese concept closely related to that of social capital), among ethnic minority students and Han students in a Chinese university. Using data from 42 semi-structured interviews with university students, our study demonstrates that three distinct student categories (Min Kao Min, Min Kao Han, and Han students) access social capital in similar ways, including via the Chinese class-based cohort model, faculty and staff, engagement in social media and online platforms, and other on and off-campus social connections. However, these three groups of students showed significant differences in the formation and use of social capital. Due to the influence of pre-college education and Internet literacy, MKM and MKH students are relatively restricted in using social media and other online platforms to obtain social capital. The varying awareness of and attitude towards the concept of "guanxi" affect its formation and utilization, with many ethnic minority students viewing it as a cultural symbol of Han society and more likely to form bonding social capital within their own ethnicity. This shows that though the diverse campus environment effectively reduces the physical space between students of different ethnicity, it does little to break through the cultural barriers, making it challenging for minority students to form cross-ethnic bridging social capital.

Take-home exam (THE) use has been reported in various disciplines, but research on THE use in language modules in higher education appears to be scarce. The current study employed surveys and interviews to examine how the shift to written THE, in place of the traditional in-class exam (ICE) during the pandemic, impacted language learning and teaching on the China campus of a British university. Additionally, correlation analyses were conducted with ranking data of students from the same cohort under THE and ICE to explore patterns in student performance under these exam conditions. In surveys and interviews, teachers reported that their teaching foci did not change under THE, while many students reported that their learning practices were different under THE and ICE. Students also exhibited a tendency to spend more time practicing skills that they expected to be assessed in the exam. Overall, both teachers and students expressed preference for ICE, with many raising concerns about fairness issues in THE. Furthermore, correlation analyses showed that, overall, for a given group of students, written ICE rankings exhibited strong correlations with each other but written THE rankings did not, suggesting relative instability of THE results. However, when written THE and oral ICE results from the same module are combined, the resultant rankings strongly correlated with pure ICE rankings. This indicates that combining ICE and THE components for assessment could help mitigate some perceived shortcomings, including the instability issue, of THE used alone.

This study addresses the problems in traditional English literature teaching methods for Chinese English majors, proposing a new teaching approach based on smart education concepts to enhance learning effectiveness. An evaluation of a semester-long reform in teaching methods is conducted using a quantitative methodology. The findings reveal significant differences in learning outcomes between the experimental and control classes, suggesting the new model's positive influence on student academic performances. Machine learning algorithms are also used to analyze student classroom behavior, indicating a significant increase in active engagement. In conclusion, students' learning outcomes, as well as engagement, can be substantially improved by integrating smart education techniques into English literature instruction.

Given its negative consequences for children's mental health and academic performance, parental burnout has recently drawn researchers' attention. However, its effects on children's behavior remain unclear. To fill this gap, this study examined the relationship between parental burnout and adolescents' phubbing as well as the mediating roles of parental phubbing and adolescents' psychological distress based on the family system theory. This study included 871 adolescents and their primary caregivers. Results indicated positive correlations between parental burnout, parental phubbing, adolescents' psychological distress and adolescents' phubbing. Parental burnout had a direct relationship with adolescents' phubbing; it also had an indirect relationship with adolescents' phubbing through the independent mediating roles of parental phubbing and adolescents' psychological distress as well as the chain-mediating roles of these two factors. The findings contribute to our understanding of how parental burnout is related to adolescents' phubbing and highlight the importance of attending to parental phubbing and adolescents' psychological distress in preventing and intervening in adolescents' phubbing.

The success of bilingual immersion programmes has promoted the debate about whether learners' first language (L1) should be used in foreign language classrooms. Nevertheless, Content and Language Integrated Learning, a pedagogical approach embedded in the development of multilingualism and multiliteracy theories, has overstepped the monolingual principle by allowing for more flexibility in the choice of instructional languages. Previous research has emphasised chiefly the reasons and effects of embracing a shared language, other than the target language, in content-based bilingual classrooms, while this paper intends to investigate the correlations between L1 use with learner factors, the understanding of which can shed light on more efficient translanguaging practices. Through a cross-sectional approach, the present study was contextualised in a large-scale, content-based English as a foreign language programme and drew on 335 undergraduates, who completed a series of questionnaires and tests. Correlation and regression analyses primarily demonstrated that English proficiency was the most significant predictor of learners' overall attitude to L1 instruction in classrooms, followed by content proficiency and language learning motivation. Gender was a non-significant variable for learners' overall perspective on L1 employment but was related to the constructs about using the L1 for phatic purposes, with male students requiring more translanguaging assistance. The paper concludes with the implication that the desire for L1 use is associated with various learner factors and that teachers should be aware of how to encourage and regulate translanguaging practices for differing instructional purposes as per the changing needs in classrooms.

Self-regulation and language learning motivation have always been the research focus of foreign language acquisition. In higher education, the heterogeneity of college students creates diversity in SRL abilities, especially with the prevalence of online learning nowadays. The current study investigates the profiles of college EFL learners' self-regulation and predictive role of self-determination motivation on the membership of SRL profiles in an online learning environment. Online self-regulation learning questionnaire was administered to examine the potential profiles, and self-determination motivation questionnaire to reveal the relationship between online self-regulation and self-determination motivation with a total of 439 college EFL learners. Latent profile analysis yielded three subgroups of online self-regulation: high, median, and low. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that external regulation, intrinsic motivation-stimulation, and intrinsic motivation-accomplishment in self-determination motivation can effectively predict the online self-regulation profiles membership. These results altogether suggest that online SRL profiles can be predicted by several aspects in self-determination motivation in EFL learning.

Flexible education is considered the primary function of e-learning, however, empirical evidence during the COVID-19 pandemic has also demonstrated that students may seek emotional comforts in e-learning to alleviate their negative emotions. This study aims to provide a holistic view of the antecedents of college students' e-learning acceptance by integrating social support theory with the technology acceptance model. Specifically, drawing upon social support theory, this study adopted perceived educational support and perceived emotional support as two driving factors and examined their influences on students' continuous intention in e-learning. The model was empirically validated using survey data from 512 college respondents in China during the first wave of the pandemic. Our results suggested that while perceived educational support exerts a major influence on e-learning acceptance, perceived emotional support also has an important role to play. Besides, the analytics results suggested that the two facets of support had different influencing patterns: perceived educational support has a positive and significant relationship with both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, whereas perceived emotional support solely has a significant relationship with perceived ease of use. Additionally, compared with the prior studies, the effect size ([beta]) between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness is larger in the present study (COVID-19 context). These findings stress the need to better understand the mechanism by which social support influences college students' e-learning acceptance and to make use of various kinds of social supports to enhance perceived ease of use (e.g. human-computer interface), promote perceived usefulness, and ultimately motivate more students' continuance intention in e-learning.

Background: Previous studies indicated that working memory (WM) updating and WM capacity play essential roles in mathematical ability. However, it is unclear whether WM capacity mediates the effect of WM updating on mathematics, and whether the cascading effects vary with different mathematical domains. Aims: The current study aims to explore the longitudinal mediating role of WM capacity between WM updating and mathematical performance, and how the relations change with the age and domains. Sample: A total of 131 Chinese first-graders participated the study. Methods: Participants were required to complete tasks on WM updating and WM capacity in Grade 1 and Grade 2, as well as paper-and-pencil tests on mathematics achievement in Grade 3. The role of WM updating and capacity in the development of pupil's mathematical achievement was examined. Results: Results revealed that verbal WM updating in Grade 1 predicted basic arithmetic and logical-visuospatial ability in Grade 3 via its cascading effect on verbal WM capacity in Grade 2. Moreover, visuospatial WM updating in Grade 1 predicted visuospatial WM capacity in Grade 2. Visuospatial WM capacity in Grade 1 predicted logical-visuospatial ability in Grade 3 instead of basic arithmetic ability in Grade 3. Conclusions: The findings suggested that WM updating exerts effect on pupil's mathematical performance via WM capacity, meanwhile, this effect depends on children's mathematics domain.

The current study examines the mediating roles of self-efficacy and sleep disturbance and the moderating role of gender in the association between the duration of youth/parent communication on depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 isolation period in China. We used the self-designed demographic variable questionnaire, General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Self-Rating Depression Scale, and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale with 1,772 youths aged 15-24 from 26 provinces in China during the COVID-19 lockdown. We performed demographic variable analysis, correlation analysis, mediation analysis, and moderated analysis. The duration of daily communication with parents was significantly positively correlated with self-efficacy and significantly negatively correlated with sleep disturbance, depression, and anxiety. The chain mediation analysis revealed that the duration of communication with parents directly affected depression and anxiety. Self-efficacy, sleep disturbance, and self-efficacy sleep disturbance had significant mediating and chain-mediating effects on the duration of communication with parents, depression, and anxiety. The interactions between sleep disturbance and gender (B = 0.35, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.64, p = 0.02 < 0.05) were significant. The duration of parent/youth communication directly affected depression and anxiety and indirectly affected depression and anxiety via the chain-mediating effect of self-efficacy and sleep disturbance. Gender moderates the relationships between sleep disturbance and depression.

Parents of children with autism experience significant stress and challenges in daily life that can impact their well-being. Using a daily diary method, the present study examined the same-day and next-day associations between child-related stress, social support, coping, and parental well-being outcomes (i.e. life satisfaction, positive and negative affect). A total of 76 parents (58 mothers) of autistic children participated in the study and completed daily diaries for 14 consecutive days. Multilevel modeling analyses indicated that child-related stress and social support were associated with same-day life satisfaction only in mothers. Moreover, positive coping on a given day was not only related to more positive affect and higher life satisfaction on the same day but also to higher life satisfaction on the next day, whereas negative coping was only related to higher negative affect and lower positive affect on the same day in both parents. These findings emphasize the benefits of positive coping and social support in raising children with autism, which may contribute toward the further development of existing support programs for parents of children with autism.

We consider the problem of assessing the changing performance levels of individual students as they go through online courses. This student performance modeling problem is a critical step for building adaptive online teaching systems. Specifically, we conduct a study of how to utilize various types and large amounts of log data from earlier students to train accurate machine learning models that predict the performance of future students. This study is the first to use four very large sets of student data made available recently from four distinct intelligent tutoring systems. Our results include a new machine learning approach that defines a new state of the art for logistic regression based student performance modeling, improving over earlier methods in several ways: First, we achieve improved accuracy of student modeling by introducing new features that can be easily computed from conventional question-response logs (e.g., features such as the pattern in the student's most recent answers). Second, we take advantage of features of the student history that go beyond question-response pairs (e.g., features such as which video segments the student watched, or skipped) as well as background information about prerequisite structure in the curriculum. Third, we train multiple specialized student performance models for different aspects of the curriculum (e.g., specializing in early versus later segments of the student history), then combine these specialized models to create a group prediction of the student performance. Taken together, these innovations yield an average AUC score across these four datasets of 0.808 compared to the previous best logistic regression approach score of 0.767, and also outperforming state-of-the-art deep neural net approaches. Importantly, we observe consistent improvements from each of our three methodological innovations, in each diverse dataset, suggesting that our methods are of general utility and likely to produce improvements for other online tutoring systems as well.

Students' problem-solving ability depends on their understanding of related scientific concepts. Therefore, the modeling and assessment of students' understanding of specific scientific concepts is important to promote students' problem-solving ability, as it can find students' understanding difficulties and explore breakthrough strategies accordingly. Inspired by the theory of knowledge integration and combined with the situational characteristics of science education in China, this study established a conceptual framework about buoyant force, which was applied to model students' different understandings of it. And based on the established framework, an assessment of buoyant force was designed and tested among 622 Chinese lower-secondary school students. Through the analysis of the test data and the interview outcomes, it was found that students' understanding of buoyant force could be divided into three levels of knowledge integration including novice, intermediate, and expert. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that an emphasis on the nature of buoyant force can be an effective strategy to help students achieve a deeper conceptual understanding of buoyant force, leading to a more integrated knowledge structure.

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of writing strategies, namely, planning, execution, monitoring and revising by Chinese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in their English writing. It also investigated the emotions of Chinese EFL writers in terms of anxiety and enjoyment as well as how the employment of writing strategy was linked to the emotional aspects. A mixed method approach was employed to collect both the quantitative and qualitative data from the participants. A total of 54 Chinese undergraduates were given the Foreign Language Writing Strategy Survey Questionnaire (FLWSSQ) and the Foreign Language Writing Emotion Survey Questionnaire (FLWESQ). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a selection of participants. Results show that EFL learners report a moderate level of frequency use of writing strategies and a moderate level of anxiety and enjoyment of EFL writing. Moreover, the use of writing strategies is positively correlated with participants' writing enjoyment. Since writing strategies and emotion are crucial factors influencing students' perception and behaviors regarding writing, the current study provides some insights into understanding students' use of writing strategies and emotional experiences in an EFL context. It also suggests some pedagogical implications for teaching L2 (Second Language) writing through strategy-based instruction and activating positive emotion in classrooms.

Globally, increasing attention has been paid to disability inclusion in the education sector, from international development to national policymaking. Discussions on inclusive education appear in various conferences, events, policy briefs, academic articles, and global reports. The 2020 Global Education Monitoring Report centralizes inclusion in education, advocates the message of "All Means All", and highlights inclusive education as its core recommendation (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 2020). In the context of increasing global discourse around disability inclusion in education, how does education for people with disabilities fare at local and national levels? Building on the author's prior research experience and connection to disability rights movement in China, this study sets out to explore the educational landscape for a specific population -- Chinese people with visual impairments, and identifies various challenges and opportunities facing education inclusion in greater details.

Family, peers, and academics are three central sources of stress for Chinese adolescents, which have potential negative implications for youth's adjustment. This study investigated how within-person fluctuations in daily domains of stress (i.e., family, peer, and academic) and between-person differences in average stress levels were associated with four Chinese adolescent adjustment indicators (i.e., positive and negative emotions, sleep quality, and subjective vitality). Participants included 315 Chinese adolescents (48.3% girls; M[subscript age] = 13.05 years, SD = 0.77 years) who completed a 10-day diary on each domain of stress and indicators of adjustment. Multilevel models revealed that peer stress had the most detrimental association with Chinese adolescents' adjustment at both within-person (i.e., higher same-day and next-day negative emotions) and between-person (i.e., higher negative emotions, worse sleep quality, and lower subjective vitality) levels. Academic stress was only significant at the between-person level, corresponding to worse sleep quality and increased levels of negative emotions. Family stress exhibited mixed associations and was positively associated with positive and negative emotions and subjective vitality. These findings underscore the need to examine the impact of multiple domains of stress on Chinese adolescent adjustment. Further, identification and intervention for adolescents with elevated peer stress may be particularly helpful for increasing healthy adjustment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate current Chinese preschool teachers' use of behavior management (BM) strategies in preschool classrooms during the challenging juncture of routine care and their impact on children's behavior performances, as well as the features of high-quality BM. Using a stratified, random sampling procedure from data collected as part of a large, longitudinal study in the Guangdong province of China, 37 teachers agreed to participate. While preschools from high to low SES were invited, 18 teachers in high SES and 19 teachers in low SES regions provided consent to participate, resulting in a total sample of 37 teachers. Both quantitative methods and descriptive statistics were employed through CLASS to analyze teachers' use of BM strategies and possible associations with children's behavioral performances. Findings showed that teachers generally missed opportunities to use high-quality strategies. Features of strategies were identified in this study that were used only to control children's behaviors and to elicit children's situational compliance instead of eliciting their receptive compliance. Results also revealed that most Chinese preschools were generally highly controlled environments. Realizing the need for children in preschool classrooms to establish early and positive behavioral habits as imperative, the results of this study point to necessary professional development to become more intentional in using effective behavior management strategies, such as clear behavioral expectations, proactive strategies, and correction of misbehavior, during routine care activities to meet children's behavioral needs and encourage receptive compliance.
