People with endocrine disorders are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, yet their knowledge of osteoporosis prevention is rarely studied. This study aimed to assess the knowledge related to osteoporosis prevention and its associated factors among people with endocrine disorders in China. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a Chinese hospital's Department of Metabolism and Endocrinology. A total of 562 people with endocrine disorders completed the Chinese version of the Osteoporosis Prevention and Awareness Tool to assess their knowledge of osteoporosis prevention. Results showed that participants had a mean knowledge of 59.36 ± 23.90 out of 100, with only 52.1% scoring above 60 points. Being female, having higher education, with comorbidities, with a recent osteoporosis diagnosis, and having received health education related to osteoporosis prevention were associated with higher knowledge of osteoporosis prevention. Our study indicates that more efforts are needed to improve the knowledge related to osteoporosis prevention among people with endocrine disorders. This may be realized by strengthening and expanding diverse education, focusing on males and those with lower education and without comorbidities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An unexpected surge of osteoporosis outpatients occurred after COVID-19 lockdown was lifted in China. To confirm the observation and identify possible reasons driving patients care seeking behaviors post-pandemic, we compared the outpatient volumes at the osteoporosis clinic in January through May, 2019–2022 and surveyed seven osteoporosis specialists across China to validate the phenomenon before devising an online questionnaire to collect patients' characters and physical activity levels. Univariate and binary logistic regression analyses were calculated to identify predictors of post-lockdown care-seeking. We received 480 valid responses, including 397 (82.7%) patients having visited the clinic after lockdown and 83 (17.3%) having not. Four significant predictors were identified, including being female, experiencing pain, aggravating symptoms, and heightened anxiety during lockdown (P < 0.05). Both groups experienced lower physical activity levels during lockdown, which however was not a significant predictor (P = 0.317). The surge in osteoporosis outpatient visits after COVID-19 lockdown suggests vast latent demand for osteoporosis care accumulated during the pandemic. Four significant factors predict post-lockdown outpatient care-seeking, including being female, experiencing pain and aggravating symptoms, and heightened anxiety levels. Though physical activity levels decreased during lockdown, it failed to predict care-seeking. This demonstrates resilience of osteoporosis patients to resume regular care despite disruption and stress the substantial backlog of unmet healthcare needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exercise is significantly beneficial for patients with osteoporosis. However, physiological and psychological factors such as pain and kinesiophobia prevent patients from participating in exercise. Therefore, it is important to understand how these patients perceive participation in exercise. This qualitative study was conducted in China using conventional content analysis. Using a purposeful sampling method, 17 patients with primary osteoporosis were recruited. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview and managed using ATLAS.ti 21. Nine generic categories were developed from 26 subcategories and two main categories were identified: Barriers and facilitators, support systems, network resources, positive emotions, and reactions were the facilitators for exercise in this study. In addition, mindful exercise was positively viewed by the patients. Inefficient awareness, weak support systems, and burdens were identified as barriers. To improve compliance in clinical practice, targeted exercise protocols should be developed for patients based on these perceptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The multidisciplinary co-management program for geriatric patients with hip fracture is cost-effective in the Chinese population and it has the potential to be scaled up in China. Introduction: The study aimed to investigate the cost-effectiveness of a multidisciplinary co-management program for patients with hip fracture in China. Methods: Hip fracture patients who were admitted to an orthopedic hospital in Beijing were included in the multidisciplinary co-management program. The cost-effectiveness of intervention was evaluated compared to the conventional management. A Markov microsimulation model was developed to simulate lifetime costs and effectiveness. Costs including intervention, hospitalization, medications, and long-term care costs were expressed using 2019 US dollars and the healthcare perspective was adopted. Effectiveness was evaluated using both 1-year mortality-averted and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Costs and effectiveness were discounted at 5% per annum. The willingness-to-pay (WTP) threshold was set at $26,481 per QALY gained which was three times gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in China. One-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted. Results: The lifetime cost for the conventional management (n = 1839) and intervention group (n = 1192) was $11,975 and $13,309 respectively. The lifetime QALYs were 2.38 and 2.45 years and the first-year mortality was 17.8% and 16.1%. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was $19,437 per QALY gained or $78,412 per 1-year mortality-averted. Given the Chinese WTP threshold, the intervention had a 78% chance being cost-effective. The cost-effectiveness of the intervention was sensitive to cost of intervention and the proportion of patients who underwent surgery within 48 h. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary co-management program for patients with hip fracture is cost-effective and it has the potential to be scaled up in the Chinese population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim was to compare the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) and the UK National Osteoporosis Guideline Group (NOGG) guidelines for the detection of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal Chinese women. The NOF guidelines had higher accuracy than the UK guidelines for spinal radiography examination., Purpose: To compare the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) and the UK National Osteoporosis Guideline Group (NOGG) guidelines for the detection of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal Chinese women., Methods: A cross-sectional study on 255 community-dwelling postmenopausal women was conducted in Hunan province in 2017. Demographic and clinical characteristics and risk factors were recorded through questionnaires. Height and weight were measured using standard methods, and bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Vertebral fractures were diagnosed by radiography using semi-quantitative morphometry., Results: The prevalence of vertebral fractures was 9.4%. Women with vertebral fractures were significantly older and shorter, had higher years-since menopause and height loss values and lower BMD and T-scores at the femoral neck and total hip, and were more likely to have a history of previous fractures. The sensitivity and specificity of the NOF guidelines were 91.7% and 39.8%, respectively, while the NOGG guidelines had lower sensitivity (87.5%) and specificity (32.5%). However, a higher percentage had indications for radiography in the 50-64 years age group according to the NOGG guidelines, while a higher percentage had indications for radiography in the ≥ 65 year group according to the NOF guidelines., Conclusions: The NOF guidelines were better than the NOGG guidelines for spinal radiography examination in the Chinese postmenopausal women.

In the present study, we revise the Cochylini fauna of the Korean Peninsula and northeast China. In total, 54 species of 10 genera are recognized including two new species ( Aethes bistigmatus sp. nov. and Phalonidia coreana sp. nov.) and three new records ( Cochylidia heydeniana (Herrich‐Schäffer), Eugnosta ussuriana (Caradja), and Phalonidia fraterna Razowski) for China plus one subspecies ( Eugnosta hydrargyrana mongolica Razowski) newly reported from Northeast China. All the available information, including geographical distribution and biology of each taxon, is provided. The keys to the genera of Cochylini of this region are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
