We examined the relations between mothers' reading skills, home literacy environment (HLE), and children's emergent literacy skills and word reading and whether their relations vary across urban and rural contexts in China. Four hundred third-year kindergarten Chinese children (M[subscript age] = 74.50 ± 3.77 months) were recruited from Jining (N = 232) and the small towns of Luqiao and Mapo (N = 168). The children were assessed on emergent literacy skills (pinyin letter knowledge, phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming [RAN], and vocabulary) and word reading. Their mothers were also assessed on reading skills and completed a questionnaire on HLE (direct teaching, shared book reading, and access to literacy resources [ALR]). Results of structural equation modeling showed that (a) mothers' reading skills correlated with shared book reading and ALR in both groups, (b) direct teaching predicted children's pinyin letter knowledge, and ALR predicted phonological awareness and vocabulary in both groups after controlling for mothers' reading skills and parents' education, and (c) mothers' reading skills had an indirect effect on children's word reading through vocabulary (in the urban group) or phonological awareness (in the rural group). Multigroup analyses further showed that the effect of direct teaching on RAN was stronger in the rural group. These findings suggest that HLE exerts its effect on children's emergent literacy skills and word reading across contexts, even after controlling for mothers' reading skills.

We examined the relation between home literacy environment (HLE), parents' reading skills, and children's emergent literacy skills (pinyin letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and vocabulary) and reading (word reading and reading comprehension) in a sample of 168 Chinese children (M[subscript age] = 74.26 months) followed from kindergarten to Grade 1. Results of structural equation modeling showed that code-related HLE activities and access to literacy resources continued to predict children's emergent literacy skills after controlling for the effects of family's socioeconomic status and both parents' reading skills. Parents' reading skills also exerted a direct effect on children's reading comprehension. These findings suggest that HLE exerts a true environmental effect on children's reading skills that is not due to a genetic confound.

Purpose: We examined whether the relations between home literacy environment (HLE), children's independent reading, and emergent literacy and reading skills are confounded by parents' reading skills (a genetic proxy). Method: One hundred eighty-nine Chinese children (M[subscript age] = 74.26 months, 40% female) were followed from kindergarten to Grade 2 and were assessed on emergent literacy skills (pinyin knowledge, phonological awareness, and vocabulary) and word reading in kindergarten and on reading comprehension in Grade 2. Their parents (both mothers and fathers) were also assessed on reading (word reading and reading comprehension) and completed questionnaires on HLE (code-related activities, meaning-related activities, and access to literacy resources) in kindergarten and their children's independent reading in Grade 2. Results: Results of structural equation modeling showed that access to literacy resources was associated with children's vocabulary, and code-related activities indirectly predicted reading comprehension through pinyin knowledge after controlling for parents' reading skills. Parents' reading skills indirectly predicted children's reading comprehension through children's independent reading. Conclusion: Code-related activities and access to literacy resources may have a true effect on children's reading development over and above the effect of parents' reading skills as a proxy for genetic transmission. The children of parents with better reading skills may engage in more independent reading, which may be related to their better reading comprehension.

Purpose: We examined the role of distal (parents' education, family's income, parents' expectations, and parents' attitudes to the home teaching of literacy) and proximal (formal and informal home literacy environment, access to literacy resources, and extracurricular activities) parental factors in children's early literacy skills and whether the relations vary across affluent and disadvantaged societies in China. Method: Five hundred fifty-three third-year kindergarten Chinese children (M[subscript age] = 74.59 months) were recruited from Jining, Luqiao, and Mapo and were assessed on measures of phonological awareness, vocabulary, pinyin knowledge, and word reading. Their parents filled out a questionnaire on their education and income as well as on the frequency of engaging in different home literacy activities, their expectations and attitudes to the home teaching of literacy, and their children's extracurricular activities. Results: Results of multigroup analyses and mediation analyses revealed both direct and indirect effects of both distal and proximal parental factors on emergent literacy skills and word reading. In addition, the models were strikingly similar across the two settings. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the pathways of differential influences from parental factors to children's early literacy skills may be similar across socioeconomic contexts.

A long-standing question in developmental science is how the neurodevelopment of the brain influences cognitive functions. Here, we examined the developmental change of resting EEG power and its links to vocabulary acquisition in school-age children. We further explored what mechanisms may mediate the relation between brain rhythm maturation and vocabulary knowledge. Eyes-opened resting-state EEG data were recorded from 53 typically-developing Chinese children every 2 years between the ages of 7 and 11. Our results showed first that delta, theta, and gamma power decreased over time, whereas alpha and beta power increased over time. Second, after controlling for general cognitive abilities, age, home literacy environment, and phonological skills, theta decreases explained 6.9% and 14.4% of unique variance in expressive vocabulary at ages 9 and 11, respectively. We also found that beta increase from age 7 to 9 significantly predicted receptive vocabulary at age 11. Finally, theta decrease predicted expressive vocabulary through the effects of phoneme deletion at age 9 and tone discrimination at age 11. These results substantiate the important role of brain oscillations at rest, especially theta rhythm, in language development. The developmental change of brain rhythms could serve as sensitive biomarkers for vocabulary development in school-age children, which would be of great value in identifying children at risk of language impairment.

We examined the developmental relationship between cognitive-linguistic skills (nonverbal IQ, vocabulary, phonological awareness, rapid automatised naming [RAN]), home environment factors (direct teaching, shared book reading, access to literacy resources, parents' expectations, family's socioeconomic status [SES]), and pinyin letter knowledge in kindergarten, pinyin reading accuracy at the beginning of Grade 1, and pinyin reading fluency at the middle of Grade 1 in a sample of 159 Chinese children (mean age = 72.70 months). Results showed that phonological awareness, RAN, and direct teaching were associated with pinyin letter knowledge. RAN consistently predicted pinyin reading accuracy and fluency. Moreover, parents' expectations and family's SES predicted pinyin reading indirectly through RAN and direct teaching. These findings suggest that the cognitive-linguistic and home environment predictors of pinyin reading are similar to those for Chinese reading, except that vocabulary and access to literacy resources may be less important for pinyin reading.

Although several studies have examined the role of home literacy environment (HLE) in learning to read in Western societies, little is known about the role of HLE in Chinese reading. In addition, the few studies in Chinese have not tested the possible effects of HLE on reading comprehension. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of different aspects of HLE (formal literacy experiences, informal literacy experiences, and access to literacy resources) on reading comprehension in Chinese. One hundred fifty-nine third year kindergarten children (70 girls and 89 boys; M[subscript age] = 72.62 months) participated in the study. In kindergarten, they were assessed on emergent literacy skills (vocabulary, phonological awareness, pinyin knowledge, rapid naming), in Grade 1, on word reading, and, in Grade 2, on reading comprehension. In addition, parents filled out a questionnaire on their education and income, the frequency of different HLE activities, the number of children's books at home, and their expectations, when their children were in kindergarten. Results of structural equation modeling showed that formal literacy experiences predicted reading comprehension through the effects of pinyin knowledge on word reading. Access to literacy resources predicted reading comprehension through the effects of rapid naming, phonological awareness, and vocabulary. Finally, informal literacy experiences did not predict any of the emergent literacy skills or reading outcomes. Our findings provide only partial support of the home literacy model and suggest that the culture in which environmental effects take place may determine what aspects of the home literacy environment contribute to children's reading performance and what not.

The purpose of this study was to examine which of the components of executive functions (EF)--inhibition, shifting, and working memory--predict reading and mathematics achievement and if the effects of these components are the same across two cultures (Western and East Asian). One hundred twenty English-speaking Canadian (65 females, 55 males; M[subscript age] = 82.12 months) and 181 Mandarin-speaking Chinese (82 females, 99 males; M[subscript age] = 85.85 months) children were assessed on nonverbal IQ, speed of processing, rapid naming, inhibition (Color-Word Stroop), shifting (Planned Connections), working memory (Digit Span Forward and Backward), reading (word identification and reading comprehension), and mathematics (numerical operations and math reasoning). The results of structural equation modeling indicated first that among the EF components only working memory predicted reading and mathematics in the Canadian sample, while inhibition and working memory predicted reading and mathematics in the Chinese sample. The results also showed that inhibition was a stronger predictor of reading and mathematics in the Chinese sample. Taken together, these findings suggest that not all EF components are equally important for reading/mathematics and that culture may influence the relations between specific EF components and academic achievement.

The authors examined whether different measures of print exposure assess the same underlying concept and how these different measures relate to vocabulary breadth and depth. One hundred forty-seven students attending the third year of kindergarten in Jining, China, were assessed on nonverbal IQ, vocabulary breadth and depth, and their knowledge of book titles. Parents also participated in the study by filling out a questionnaire on the frequency of shared book reading and the number of children's books at home, recording their daily parent-child reading activities (diary), and completing the children's title and author recognition checklists. Results of exploratory factor analysis indicated that the measures of print exposure were loading on three interrelated factors. The items measuring the frequency of shared book reading at home along with diary formed one factor, the children's title recognition checklist and number of children's books at home formed a second factor, and children's knowledge of book titles formed a third factor. In addition, the results of hierarchical regression analyses indicated that whereas all factors accounted for unique variance (3-6%) in vocabulary breadth, only children's knowledge of book titles predicted vocabulary depth, after controlling for children's age, parents' education and income, and children's nonverbal IQ. Taken together, these findings suggest that different measures of print exposure may capture different aspects of print exposure and that these aspects may exert a different role in vocabulary breadth and depth.

Although rapid automatized naming (RAN) is one of the best predictors of reading across languages, its nature remains elusive. In the present study, we aim to elucidate the nature of RAN by examining the cognitive and environmental correlates of RAN. One hundred forty-one second-year kindergarten Chinese children (71 girls, 70 boys; mean age = 58.99 months) were assessed on measures of nonverbal cognitive ability, attention, visual processing, conceptual processing, semantic processing, phonological processing, short-term memory, articulation, speed of processing, RAN (digits and objects), and discrete naming. We also collected information on mothers' education and occupation, and children's home learning experiences. The results showed that formal home learning experiences, visual processing, phonological processing, and articulation were unique correlates of both RAN tasks. Semantic processing also correlated significantly with RAN objects. However, controlling for the effects of discrete naming eliminated the effects of most subprocesses on RAN. These findings suggest that RAN is indeed multicomponential, but not all components contribute the same way to RAN performance. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Both reading difficulties (RD) and mathematics difficulties (MD) are common neurodevelopmental disorders. The co-occurrence of RD and MD, known as comorbid RDMD, is estimated to range between 21% and 45% of children with learning disabilities. Deficits in working memory have been reported in both RD and MD groups, as well as among comorbid RDMD. However, previous comorbidity studies have only examined the role of some components of working memory, and they do not strictly match their groups on relevant reading and mathematics tasks. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the nature of working memory deficits in comorbid RDMD after matching groups based on reading and mathematics tasks. We assessed four groups of children (RD [n = 21, Mage = 10.96 years], MD [n = 24, Mage = 11.04 years], comorbid RDMD [n = 26, Mage = 10.90 years], and chronological-age controls [n = 27, Mage = 10.96 years]) on measures of the phonological loop (word span and digit span forward tasks), central executive (complex word and digit span), and updating tasks (word and digit 2-back). The results of ANCOVA (covarying for gender and non-verbal IQ) showed first that the RD and RDMD groups performed significantly worse than the MD and control groups in both measures of the phonological loop. For the central executive and updating tasks, we found an effect based on stimulus type. For word-related tasks, the RD and comorbid RDMD groups performed worse than the MD and control groups, and for number-related tasks, the MD and comorbid RDMD groups performed worse than the RD and control groups. Taken together, our findings provide support for the correlated liability model of comorbidity, which indicates that working memory deficits experienced by the RDMD group are an additive combination of deficits observed in the RD and MD groups, suggesting that working memory tasks used to examine underlying deficits in reading and/or mathematics difficulties may dictate whether or not significant group differences are found. The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the extent to which Chinese dyslexic children experience deficits in phonological and orthographic processing skills and (b) to examine if Chinese dyslexia is associated with deficits in Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive (PASS) processing. A total of 27 Grade 4 children with dyslexia (DYS), 27 Grade 4 chronological age (CA) controls, and 27 Grade 2 reading age (RA) controls were tested on measures of phonological awareness, rapid naming, phonological memory, PASS, reading accuracy, and reading fluency. The results indicated that the DYS group performed significantly poorer than the CA and RA groups on both measures of phonological awareness and on a measure of orthographic processing but comparably to the RA group on a measure of rapid naming and both measures of phonological memory. In regard to the PASS processing skills, the DYS group performed worse than the CA controls on Successive and Simultaneous processing but comparably to the RA group on all PASS processing skills. Invasive alien plants, together with organisms introduced for biological control, are ideal study systems with which to address questions of whether, and how fast, organisms adapt to changing environments. We compared populations of common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, from native (USA) and introduced (China) ranges at similar latitudes, together with herbivores introduced for biological control, to understand the rate of evolutionary adaptive response of an invasive plant to novel environments.Evolution of phenotypic traits associated with invasiveness was assessed by comparing differentiation in quantitative traits (QST) to that of neutral microsatellite genetic loci (FST) and through climate data. A common‐garden experiment estimated quantitative genetic variation associated with competition with grasses and biological control history by beetles.Three growth traits (height, total and stem biomass) and plasticity associated with additional nutrients were significantly greater in invasive compared to native populations and differed from expectations from genetic drift alone. Native, but not invasive, populations exhibited traits showing evidence of past selection and correlations with climate, consistent with the recent timing of introductions. Competition experiments between invasive populations and a US bunch grass showed reduced competitive ability in populations with a history of biological control that might indicate a trade‐off between competitive ability and herbivore resistance in invasive populations.Synthesis. Our results demonstrate the rapid rate at which traits favouring invasion can evolve in invasive weeds, such as A. artemisiifolia, but also that adaptation may reflect joint effects of release from specialist herbivores and novel climatic conditions. In 2014, the IMF reported that China became the largest economy in the world according to Purchasing Power Parity rates. This study aims to explain the Chinese economic miracle. It focuses on frequently suggested factors influencing China’s real gross domestic product (GDP), such as export promotion, exchange rate policy, and foreign direct investment (FDI). The paper employs the Bounds test of the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to test for cointegration. Once cointegration is established, Granger Causality is investigated using the vector autoregressive model and the Toda and Yamamoto (1995) method. Two different combinations of the real macroeconomic variables exports, exchange rate, imports, and FDI were employed to examine Granger causal relationships. All explanatory variables, except for the exchange rate, were found to have plausible relationships with GDP. The exchange rate and GDP relationship was unexpected; a Renminbi appreciation was associated with an increase in GDP. To investigate this paradox, a third ARDL model was estimated with exports as the dependent variable and the exchange rate, world GDP, and FDI as the independent variables. In this model, we found evidence of cointegration and a plausible relationship between real exports and the real exchange rate. Exchange rate devaluation increased exports and thus indirectly increased GDP. Such findings help to resolve the unexpected results. Nonetheless, according to the Granger causality tests the established statistical evidence is rather weak. The question concerning the legality of China’s nine dash line has been the subject of arbitration proceedings at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at The Hague. The case, which was submitted to the PCA by the Philippines for adjudication, raised issues which went beyond the main question concerning the legal status of the dash line as a maritime boundary under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 provisions. These included,inter alia, complaints concerning China’s activities within the area enclosed by the nine dash line, the status of maritime features within the maritime enclosure and alleged environmental damage caused by Chinese dredging and infrastructure-building activities within the contested area. On 12 July 2016 the PCA rendered its judgement on the merits of the case. The situation for China's urban state workers has eroded in recent years as failing state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have closed in large numbers and those that remain solvent are cutting employee benefits. In this context, employee stock ownership and profit sharing should serve both firm and worker by providing capital for the former and greater job security and financial compensation for the latter. This theory was tested using data from traditional SOEs and SOEs that had undergone employee ownership (EO) reform in Shangdong province. Econometric modeling revealed a performance advantage due to EO reform. Employee participation in governance exhibited a negative relationship to performance but participation in management at the shop-floor level was significantly positive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this 4-year longitudinal study was to specify the direction of the relationship between RAN and word reading (accuracy and fluency) in Chinese. This is important in light of arguments that the developmental relationships between RAN and reading can disclose changes in the reading processes underlying reading as development proceeds. One hundred thirty-five Mandarin-speaking Chinese children (65 boys, 70 girls;Mage = 96.40 months) were assessed on RAN (digits), word-reading accuracy (Character Recognition), and word-reading fluency (One-Minute Reading). The children were assessed on the same measures when they were in Grades 3, 4, and 5. The results of path analysis indicated that the effects between RAN and word reading were unidirectional and subject to the type of reading outcome: Only RAN predicted word reading and only when word reading was operationalized with a reading fluency measure. Background: We aimed to investigate neurological outcomes in elderly patients with multiple trauma, and to review their clinical outcomes following neurosurgical operations. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted in a regional trauma center in Hong Kong. We collected prospective data on consecutive trauma patients from January 2001 to December 2008. Patients with multiple trauma (as defined by Injury Severity Score of 15 or more), with both head injury and extracranial injury, were included for analysis. Results: Age over 65 years, admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and Injury Severity Score were significantly poor prognostic factors in logistic regression analysis. Eleven (32%) of the 34 patients aged over 65 who underwent neurosurgical operations attained favorable neurological outcomes (GCS 4-5) at 6 months. Conclusions: Age was an important prognostic factor in multiple trauma patients requiring neurosurgical operations. Future randomized controlled clinical trials should be designed to recruit elderly patients (such as age between 65 and 75 years) at clinical equipoise for traumatic hematoma (such as subdural hematoma or traumatic intracerebral hematoma) evacuation and assess the quality of life, neurological, and cognitive outcomes. Abstract: An international partnership between Canada and China was established to improve performance and reduce emissions from coal-fired utility boilers. A well-tested computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling tool was used to identify the improvement strategies for 11 selected units ranging from 200 to 600MWe, to increase operation availability and realize the reduction of coal consumption, acid rain precursor NOX and green house gas CO2 emissions. Sustainability measures were introduced to promote replication of project results by the Chinese partners to maximize impact beyond the duration of the project. It is estimated that the study results could potentially be extended to 23% of the 2005 coal-based power generation capacity in China to achieve significant CO2 emissions reduction prior to implementing advanced clean coal technologies like Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and oxy-coal combustion with CO2 capture. Background: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Hong Kong is rising. The trend of colonoscopy demand is uncertain. Aim: To investigate colonoscopy demand and practice in a Hong Kong regional hospital over the past nine years. Methods: Colonoscopy data from 1st January 1997 to 31st August 2005 were retrieved and divided into two equal periods for comparison. Colonoscopy practice and findings between the two periods were compared. Results: There was no change in the number of endoscopists and colonoscopy sessions in the two periods. The number of colonoscopy done in the two periods was 2,681 and 2,871, respectively. The indications for screening of CRC/polyp (9.3 vs. 24.7%, p < 0.0001) and surveillance of CRC/polyp (4.7 vs. 10.9%, p < 0.0001) were increased, but decreased for diarrhea (18 vs. 10.2%, p < 0.0001) and per rectal bleeding (19 vs. 8.1%, p < 0.0001). The waiting time was lengthened from 2 to 4 weeks (p < 0.0001). The percentage of colonic adenomas (19.9 vs. 27.2%, p < 0.0001) was increased. A right-shift was observed in both CRC (37 vs. 50%, p = 0.018) and adenoma (21.6 vs. 38.1%, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The number of colonoscopies performed was governed by capacity partly through lengthening of waiting time to cope with demand. Ways to improve capacity for colonoscopies is needed. This article discusses the importance of employee empowerment as a solution to mass urbanization and economic stagnation in the 1990s. The growth of employee stock-ownership in the U.S. may be related to performance advantage. While econometric studies offer only weak positive correlation between enterprise productivity and worker ownership of equity, they do indicate that enterprise productivity and growth are both substantially positively correlated to equity sharing combined with worker participation in management. Beyond the performance advantage for individual enterprises, it has been estimated that employee ownership of equity provides the macroeconomic benefit of expanded consumerism. National economies that develop substantial employee ownership might also experience accelerated growth due to increased demand. Trends in employee ownership are just as promising in developing countries as in industrialized ones. In Brazil, 10 percent of the population are currently members of cooperatives. In China, employee ownership has enjoyed a revival during the reform era. The country's credit crisis has caused a number of state-owned enterprises to become joint-stock companies and to sell shares as a means of raising investment capital. Thirty-five developing countries and formerly socialist countries that have implemented free-market reforms have created employee-ownership legislation.

Understanding the spread of SARS-CoV-2, how and when evidence emerged, and the timing of local, national, regional, and global responses is essential to establish how an outbreak became a pandemic and to prepare for future health threats. With that aim, the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response has developed a chronology of events, actions, and recommendations, from December, 2019, when the first cases of COVID-19 were identified in China, to the end of March, 2020, by which time the outbreak had spread extensively worldwide and had been characterised as a pandemic. Datapoints are based on two literature reviews, WHO documents and correspondence, submissions to the Panel, and an expert verification process. The retrospective analysis of the chronology shows a dedicated initial response by WHO and some national governments, but also aspects of the response that could have been quicker, including outbreak notifications under the International Health Regulations (IHR), presumption and confirmation of human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV-2, declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, and, most importantly, the public health response of many national governments. The chronology also shows that some countries, largely those with previous experience with similar outbreaks, reacted quickly, even ahead of WHO alerts, and were more successful in initially containing the virus. Mapping actions against IHR obligations, the chronology shows where efficiency and accountability could be improved at local, national, and international levels to more quickly alert and contain health threats in the future. In particular, these improvements include necessary reforms to international law and governance for pandemic preparedness and response, including the IHR and a potential framework convention on pandemic preparedness and response. We examined (a) the cross-lagged relationships between the home learning environment and academic achievement in Chinese, and (b) whether parents’ socioeconomic status (SES) and child's gender moderate the relations. One hundred seventy-seven Chinese children were followed from Grade 1 to Grade 2 and were assessed on reading and mathematics. Their parents also responded to a questionnaire assessing the frequency of engaging in different home literacy and numeracy activities. Results showed that reading ability in Grade 1 negatively predicted informal home literacy activities in Grade 2. In turn, mathematics ability in Grade 1 negatively predicted formal home numeracy activities in Grade 2. Neither parents’ SES nor child's gender moderated any of the observed cross-lagged relationships. These findings suggest first that different facets of the home learning environment may relate to reading and mathematics in Chinese. Second, once children go to Grade 1, the relationship between home learning environment and academic achievement becomes unidirectional: early reading/mathematics ability predicts future home literacy/numeracy activities and the effect is negative. This suggests that parents engage more frequently in home activities when they notice that their children experience difficulties in reading or mathematics. The present study examined both the development of behavioral and electrophysiological rhythm processing and their contribution to phonological awareness and word reading in Chinese. We followed a sample of 47 Mandarin-speaking Chinese children from age 9 (Grade 3) to age 11 (Grade 5). Results showed first a significant improvement over time in behavioral beat perception and in P3as for small beat changes. Second, behavioral and neural beat sensitivities at age 9 predicted phonological awareness (phoneme deletion and tone identification) at age 11 and its development over the two-year span of the study. Neural beat sensitivities at age 9 also explained unique variance in reading accuracy (but not reading fluency) at age 11 and its two-year development. Taken together, these findings suggest that rhythm and Chinese reading-related skills are intricately related. Previous studies have shown that the ability to simultaneously process multiple items when these appear in serial format (called "cascaded" processing) is an important element of reading fluency. However, most evidence in support of cascaded processing comes from studies conducted in European orthographies. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine whether the same findings generalize to nonlinear and nonalphabetic orthographies (i.e., Korean and Chinese). Serial and discrete naming of digits and objects were measured in a sample of 610 Chinese and Korean children from Grades 1, 3, 5, and 6. Children were also assessed on discrete word reading and on word- and text-reading fluency. Results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that discrete naming was the main predictor of discrete word reading in both languages as early as Grade 1. Serial digit naming was the main predictor of word-reading fluency across grades and languages. Finally, serial object naming made a unique contribution to word- and text-reading fluency in Chinese upper grades. Taken together, these findings suggest that, beyond accurate and fast word recognition, there is a universal multi-item (or cascaded) processing skill involved in serial naming and reading fluency., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic reached the African continent in less than three months from when the first cases were reported from mainland China. As COVID-19 preparedness and response plans were rapidly instituted across sub-Saharan Africa, many governments and donor organizations braced themselves for the unknown impact the COVID-19 pandemic would have in under-resourced settings with high burdens of PLHIV. The potential negative impact of COVID-19 in these countries is uncertain, but is estimated to contribute both directly and indirectly to the morbidity and mortality of PLHIV, requiring countries to leverage existing HIV care systems to propel COVID-19 responses, while safeguarding PLHIV and HIV programme gains. In anticipation of COVID-19-related disruptions, PEPFAR promptly established guidance to rapidly adapt HIV programmes to maintain essential HIV services while protecting recipients of care and staff from COVID-19. This commentary reviews PEPFAR's COVID-19 technical guidance and provides country-specific examples of programme adaptions in sub-Saharan Africa., Discussion: The COVID-19 pandemic may pose significant risks to the continuity of HIV services, especially in countries with high HIV prevalence and weak and over-burdened health systems. Although there is currently limited understanding of how COVID-19 affects PLHIV, it is imperative that public health systems and academic centres monitor the impact of COVID-19 on PLHIV. The general principles of the HIV programme adaptation guidance from PEPFAR prioritize protecting the gains in the HIV response while minimizing in-person home and facility visits and other direct contact when COVID-19 control measures are in effect. PEPFAR-supported clinical, laboratory, supply chain, community and data reporting systems can play an important role in mitigating the impact of COVID-19 in sub-Saharan Africa., Conclusions: As community transmission of COVID-19 continues and the number of country cases rise, fragile health systems may be strained. Utilizing the adaptive, data-driven programme approaches in facilities and communities established and supported by PEPFAR provides the opportunity to strengthen the COVID-19 response while protecting the immense gains spanning HIV prevention, testing and treatment reached thus far., (Published 2020. The purpose of this commentary is to discuss the key points addressed in the papers included in the special issue on child and adolescent development in China. The reviews included here suggest that, for the most part, child and adolescent development in China is not significantly different from that reported in Western countries. I further argue that to better understand the role of Chinese culture in academic achievement (this appears to be the major outcome in most studies), we need more cross-cultural studies that contrast the role of multiple factors (e.g., cognitive, linguistic, environmental) simultaneously., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Migration is a key life history strategy for many animals and requires a suite of behavioural, morphological and physiological adaptations which together form the 'migratory syndrome'. Genetic variation has been demonstrated for many traits that make up this syndrome, but the underlying genes involved remain elusive. Recent studies investigating migration-associated genes have focussed on sampling migratory and nonmigratory populations from different geographic locations but have seldom explored phenotypic variation in a migratory trait. Here, we use a novel combination of tethered flight and next-generation sequencing to determine transcriptomic differences associated with flight activity in a globally invasive moth pest, the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera. By developing a state-of-the-art phenotyping platform, we show that field-collected H. armigera display continuous variation in flight performance with individuals capable of flying up to 40 km during a single night. Comparative transcriptomics of flight phenotypes drove a gene expression analysis to reveal a suite of expressed candidate genes which are clearly related to physiological adaptations required for long-distance flight. These include genes important to the mobilization of lipids as flight fuel, the development of flight muscle structure and the regulation of hormones that influence migratory physiology. We conclude that the ability to express this complex set of pathways underlines the remarkable flexibility of facultative insect migrants to respond to deteriorating conditions in the form of migratory flight and, more broadly, the results provide novel insights into the fundamental transcriptional changes required for migration in insects and other taxa., (© 2015 The Authors. We examined in a series of studies the mechanism that may underlie the relationship between Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) and reading (accuracy and fluency) in Mandarin Chinese. Study 1 examined the "arbitrary" connections hypothesis in a sample of Grade 2 children (N=182). Study 2 contrasted the phonological processing, orthographic processing, and speed of processing hypotheses in a sample of Grade 2 children followed until Grade 5 (N=72). Finally, Study 3 contrasted the same hypotheses in a sample of Grade 4 children with dyslexia (n=30) and chronological-age controls (n=30). The results indicated that (a) RAN is unrelated to Paired Associate Learning (PAL) tasks that tap the ability to form arbitrary connections between characters and their pronunciation, (b) controlling for nonverbal IQ and orthographic processing was sufficient to explain the RAN-reading accuracy relationship but not the RAN-reading fluency relationship, and (c) the observed differences between dyslexics and controls in RAN diminished after controlling for orthographic processing. Taken together, these findings suggest that RAN is related to reading accuracy (and partly to reading fluency) because children must access orthographic representations from long-term memory. Although accessing these representations is sufficient for accurate word recognition, it is not sufficient for fluent reading, which also requires efficient parafoveal processing., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. The impact of sulfate (SO4(2-)) and chloride (Cl(-)) on phosphorus (P) release from sediment in the drinking water reservoir of Yangtze River Estuary was studied systematically. A significant correlation between sodium (Na(+)), Cl(-), SO4(2-) and total P was found, suggesting that P was directly or indirectly associated with these ions. SO4(2-) and Cl(-) were important factors that had an impact on P release from the sediment. The results showed that both sulfate and chloride enhanced phosphorus release from sediment. In the sulfate treatment, the decrease of organic phosphorus (OP) suggested that the mineralization of OP enhanced P release from sediment. Phosphonate was the main factor affecting the P release under sulfate condition. In chloride treatment, the sediment composition of iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) increased. The P fractions of Fe/Al-P, Ca-P and OP in sediment also increased. However, the increase of P was unstable after chloride treatment and was easy to release under disturbance. In this study, it was observed that sulfate and chloride could increase the risk of eutrophication in the Yangtze River Estuary drinking water reservoir.

Decompensated liver cirrhosis (LC), a life-threatening complication of chronic liver disease, is one of the major indications for liver transplantation. Recently, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transfusion has been shown to lead to the regression of liver fibrosis in mice and humans. This study examined the safety and efficacy of umbilical cord-derived MSC (UC-MSC) in patients with decompensated LC. A total of 45 chronic hepatitis B patients with decompensated LC, including 30 patients receiving UC-MSC transfusion, and 15 patients receiving saline as the control, were recruited; clinical parameters were detected during a 1-year follow-up period. No significant side-effects and complications were observed in either group. There was a significant reduction in the volume of ascites in patients treated with UC-MSC transfusion compared with controls (P < 0.05). UC-MSC therapy also significantly improved liver function, as indicated by the increase of serum albumin levels, decrease in total serum bilirubin levels, and decrease in the sodium model for end-stage liver disease scores. UC-MSC transfusion is clinically safe and could improve liver function and reduce ascites in patients with decompensated LC. Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-specific T-cell responses are important in the natural history of HBV infection. The number of known HBV-specific T-cell epitopes is limited, and it is not clear whether viral evolution occurs in chronic HBV infection. We aimed to identify novel HBV T-cell epitopes by examining the relationship between HBV sequence variation and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type in a large prospective clinic-based cohort of Asian patients with chronic HBV infection recruited in Australia and China (n = 119). High-resolution 4-digit HLA class I and II typing and full-length HBV sequencing were undertaken for treatment-naïve individuals (52% with genotype B, 48% with genotype C, 63% HBV e antigen [HBeAg] positive). Statistically significant associations between HLA types and HBV sequence variation were identified (n = 49) at 41 sites in the HBV genome. Using prediction programs, we determined scores for binding between peptides containing these polymorphisms and associated HLA types. Among the regions that could be tested, HLA binding was predicted for 14/18 (78%). We identified several HLA-associated polymorphisms involving likely known anchor residues that resulted in altered predicted binding scores. Some HLA-associated polymorphisms fell within known T-cell epitopes with matching HLA restriction. Enhanced viral adaptation (defined as the presence of the relevant HLA and the escaped amino acid) was independently associated with HBeAg-negative disease (P = 0.003). Thus, HBV appears to be under immune pressure in chronic HBV infection, particularly in HBeAg-negative disease.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine anxiety and depression and their effects on the quality of life (QOL) of patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy., Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. Data were collected from a self-report survey derived from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)-Cantonese/Chinese version, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for Breast Cancer (FACT-B)-Chinese version, and from demographic and clinical characteristics. Chi-square tests and the General Linear Model (GLM) were used for secondary data analysis., Sample: The study group consisted of 218 women (> or = 18 years old) who were midway through chemotherapy or radiotherapy for stage I-III breast cancer. All subjects were recruited from the outpatient sections of the Departments of Clinical Oncology or Breast Centers of the four Hong Kong public hospitals., Results: The percentage of participants with anxiety (chi2=6.56, p=0.01) or depression (chi2=7.26, p=0.007) was higher in the chemotherapy group. More participants in the chemotherapy group had both anxiety and depression than those in the radiotherapy group, though no statistically significant difference was reported. Anxiety and depression had detrimental effects on the overall and other domains of QOL of these women undergoing adjuvant therapy for breast cancer., Conclusion: This study should increase nurses' awareness of the importance of integrating psychological symptom assessment into nursing assessment procedures, and enhance their clinical sensitivity in identifying high-risk groups of patients undergoing specific cancer treatments., (Copyright 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The objective of the research was to validate our results on sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and to determine factors affecting false-negative (FN) rates of SLNB in Chinese patients with invasive breast cancers., Methods: A retrospective study of patients with clinically node-negative invasive breast cancer was carried out from May 1999 to April 2006. A combination of radioisotope (99m)technetium(Tc)-albumin sulfur colloid and Patent Blue V dye was used to identify the sentinel lymph node. Sentinel lymph node biopsy was followed by standard level I and II axillary dissection in all patients. Various clinicopathologic variables were analysed to determine factors associated with FN SLNB., Results: Three hundred and sixty-five Chinese patients received SLNB consecutively during the study period. Seventy-eight patients with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and 56 patients with in situ carcinoma were excluded. A total of 231 patients were studied. Sentinel lymph nodes were identified in 221 patients (95.7%). There were 10 FN, resulting in a FN rate of 12.5% and accuracy rate of 95.5%. Only the number of sentinel lymph node harvested was found to be a significant factor affecting FN rates on univariate (P < 0.009) and multivariate logistic regression (odds ratio: 2.65; 95% confidence interval: 2.57-2.73; P < 0.000)., Conclusions: In Chinese women, after this retrospective analysis of available findings, at least should sentinel nodes should be removed to reduce risk of false negativity.

Purpose: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide. We previously showed that aberrant mRNA splicing of the liver intestine-cadherin gene CDH17 in liver tissues was triggered by the specific constellation of two CDH17 single nucleotide polymorphisms (651T and IVS6+35G). CDH17 aberrant splicing was highly associated with tumor dissemination and shorter survival of HCC patients. Consequently, it is highly relevant to assess whether the presence of these single nucleotide polymorphisms in the general population represents a risk to the development of HCC., Experimental Design: We conducted a case-control study including 164 HCC and 99 cirrhosis patients and 293 healthy controls. Genotyping was done by PCR and direct sequencing. Odds ratio (OR) and chi2 analysis were used to analyze genotypes and haplotypes., Results: Genotypes 651TT [OR, 2.62; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.34-5.03] and IVS6+35 GG (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.04-3.62) were highly associated with HCC disease. The 651T (C>T) and IVS6+35G (A>G) alleles were also overrepresented in HCC patients and, in particular, the T-G haplotype was the most prevalent in HCC patients when compared with healthy controls (OR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.167-2.109; P=0.004), which was in agreement with the aberrant splicing observed in tumor tissues. There was no significant difference in genotype and allele frequencies between cirrhosis patients and controls., Conclusion: The functional T-G haplotype of CDH17 (651 C>T and IVS6+35A>G) is a genetic susceptibility factor for the development of HCC in a Chinese population.

Background and Purpose: Active management of ruptured intracranial aneurysm in subarachnoid hemorrhage is indicated in patients with favorable prognosis. Outcome prediction is based on patient characteristics and clinical and radiological factors. Current clinical grading scales are imprecise, with low interobserver reproducibility. Therefore, outcome prediction remains inconsistent and decision making becomes difficult, especially for patients with poor clinical grade., Methods: The possible relationship between apolipoprotein E genotype and the outcome of patients suffering spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage was investigated. A prospective study was conducted on all patients with spontaneous aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted to our unit during a 2-year period. All patients were managed according to standard protocol, and treatments were given according to their clinical grading. Patient characteristics, clinical grade, radiological grade, and apolipoprotein E genotype were documented. The focus of the study was the 6-month neurological outcome for this group of patients after they were discharged., Results: Seventy-two patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage were admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin, Hong Kong, China, from February 1998 to February 2000. Their ages ranged from 24 to 95 years of age, with a mean (SD) age of 58.3 (15.0) years. Apolipoprotein E epsilon4 was found in 15 patients (21%). At 6 months, Glasgow Outcome Scale score < or = 3 was found in 29 patients (40%). Univariate analysis showed that older patients (odds ratio [OR], 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.07; P=0.07) and patients with poor Fisher's grade (OR, 4.5; 95% CI, 1.3 to 15.2; P=0.01), poor World Federation of Neurological Surgeons grade (OR, 5.8; 95% CI, 1.9 to 17.8; P=0.002), or apolipoprotein E epsilon4 (OR, 6.0; 95% CI, 1.7 to 21.3; P=0.006) were more likely to attain unfavorable outcome at 6 months. The additional effect of apolipoprotein E epsilon4 remained significant in the multiple logistic regression model (OR, 11.3; 95% CI, 2.2 to 57.0; P=0.003); the gain in predictive performance was not significant (P=0.26)., Conclusions: Apolipoprotein E epsilon4 genotype is related to poor outcome in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Objective: We wanted to determine whether obesity, abdominal fat distribution, and physical inactivity act similarly and independently as risk factors for noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in Hindu and Muslim Asian Indians, African-origin Creoles, and Chinese Mauritians., Research Design and Methods: We examined a population-based random cluster sample of 5080 adult subjects from the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Glucose tolerance was assessed with a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and World Health Organization criteria., Results: Univariate data and multiple logistic regression models indicated that age, family history of diabetes, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and physical inactivity conveyed similar risk for NIDDM (and IGT) in each ethnic group. After adjusting for all other factors, Hindu ethnicity conferred additional risk for NIDDM (but not IGT) in men, but in women there were no clear ethnic differences. Although BMI and WHR were independently significant risk factors, WHR conveyed relatively stronger risk for NIDDM than BMI in women, whereas the converse was true in men. For ethnic groups combined, the independent odds ratios for IGT associated with moderate and low physical activity scores (relative to high) were 1.56 and 1.71 (P less than 0.05), respectively, in men and 1.32 and 1.69 (P less than 0.05) in women. In subjects with asymptomatic NIDDM diagnosed during the survey, the independent odds ratios were 1.96 and 2.00 (P less than 0.05) in men and 1.73 and 2.70 (P less than 0.05) in women., Conclusions: These data indicate that BMI, abdominally distributed fat, and physical inactivity are important independent risk factors for both IGT and NIDDM in diverse ethnic groups. Attributable risk fractions for Mauritius suggest that populationwide modification of levels of these risk factors could potentially result in substantially lower occurrence of NIDDM (and IGT). Such interventions should be attempted in high-risk populations.
