Introduction: Soil physicochemical properties and nutrient composition play a significant role in shaping microbial communities, and facilitating soil phosphorus (P) transformation. However, studies on the mechanisms of interactions between P transformation characteristics and rhizosphere microbial diversity in Pdeficient soils on longer time scales are still limited. Methods: In this study, rhizosphere soils were collected from a pure plantation of Parashorea chinensis (P. chinensis) at six stand ages in the subtropical China, and the dynamic transformation characteristics of microbial diversity and P fractions were analyzed to reveal the variation of their interactions with age. Results: Our findings revealed that the rhizosphere soils across stand ages were in a strongly acidic and P-deficient state, with pH values ranging from 3.4 to 4.6, and available P contents ranging from 2.6 to 7.9 mg·kg-1. The adsorption of P by Fe3+ and presence of high levels of steady-state organic P highly restricted the availability of P in soil. On long time scales, acid phosphatase activity and microbial biomass P were the main drivers of P activation. Moreover, pH, available P, and ammonium nitrogen were identified as key factors driving microbial community diversity. As stand age increased, most of the nutrient content indicators firstly increased and then decreased, the conversion of other forms of P to bio-available P became difficult, P availability and soil fertility began to decline. However, bacteria were still able to maintain stable species abundance and diversity. In contrast, stand age had a greater effect on the diversity of the fungal community than on the bacteria. The Shannon and Simpson indices varied by 4.81 and 0.70 for the fungi, respectively, compared to only 1.91 and 0.06 for the bacteria. Microorganisms play a dominant role in the development of their relationship with soil P. Discussion: In conclusion, rhizosphere microorganisms in P. chinensis plantations gradually adapt to the acidic, low P environment over time. A total of 120 patients admitted to affiliated hospitals of the North Sichuan Medical College between September 2020 and June 2022 were recruited for this study and received percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage. Patients in the control group received parenteral nutrition support, whereas patients in the treatment group received parenteral and combined enteral nutrition support. Compared to the control group, the time of first exhaustion and defecation in the treatment group was faster, and the postoperative activity time and hospital stay were shorter. Serum albumin and prealbumin levels in both groups decreased on the 1st day after surgery and recovered on the 7th day, with the treatment group reaching higher levels. After surgery, the decline in alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin levels was higher in the treatment group. CD4+, CD8+ levels, and CD4+/CD8+ ratios in both groups were elevated, with the treatment group showing higher levels. The occurrence of complications in the treatment group was lessened relative to the control group. In summary, enteral combined parenteral nutrition support for patients with malignant obstructive jaundice after surgery can promote faster recovery of gastrointestinal function, improve nutritional status, facilitate the recovery of liver function, and promote immune function. Salinity stress is a great threat to the growth and productivity of crops, and development of salt-tolerant crops is of great necessity to ensure food security. Although a few genes with natural variations that confer salt tolerance at germination and seedling stage in rice have been cloned, effective intragenic markers for these genes are awaited to be developed, which hinder the use of these genes in genetic improvement of salt tolerance in rice. In this study, we first performed haplotype analysis of five rice salt-tolerant-related genes using 38 rice accessions with reference genome and 4,726 rice germplasm accessions with imputed genotypes and classified main haplotype groups and haplotypes. Subsequently, we identified unique variations for elite haplotypes reported in previous studies and developed 11 effective intragenic makers. Finally, we conducted genotyping of 533 of the 4,726 rice accessions from worldwide and 70 approved temperate geng/japonica cultivars in China using the developed markers. These results could provide effective donors and markers of salt-tolerant-related genes and thus could be of great use in genetic improvement of salt tolerance in rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food in many countries around the world, particularly in China. The production of rice is seriously affected by the bacterial leaf streak and rice blast, which can reduce rice yield or even cause it to fail to be harvested. In this study, susceptible material 58B was edited by CRISPR/Cas9, targeting a target of the Pi21 gene and a target of the effector-binding element (EBE) of the OsSULTR3;6 gene, and the mutants 58b were obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated method. The editing efficiency of the two targets in the T0 generation was higher than 90.09%, the homozygous mutants were successfully selected in the T0 generation, and the homozygous mutation rate of each target was higher than 26.67%. The expression of the edited pi21 and EBE of Ossultr3;6 was significantly reduced, and the expression of defense responsive genes was significantly upregulated after infected with rice blast. The lesion areas of rice blast and bacterial leaf streak were significantly reduced in 58b, and the resistance of both was effectively improved. Furthermore, the gene editing events did not affect the agronomic traits of rice. In this study, the resistance of 58b to rice blast and bacterial leaf streak was improved simultaneously. This study provides a reference for using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats/Cas9 (CRISPR/Cas9) to accelerate the improvement of rice varieties and the development of new materials for rice breeding. For a comprehensive response to climate change and low carbon development mode, the 3S-based regional terrestrial carbon cycle model in Luanhe basin is constructed in accordance with componentbased development strategy to identify carbon cycle evolution of terrestrial ecosystem under the background of local changes, combining measured weather data, prototype observation data of soil and plants as well as remote-sensing information in different spatial and temporal scales. The model has the ability of describing canopy fluxes, net primary productivity, biomass allocation and turnover, mortality, decomposition of soil organic matter and other dynamic processes. The carbon cycle evolution in Luanhe Basin from 1995 to 2010 is simulated and analyzed. The results are shown as follows: 1) in the temporal scale, inter-annual change of leaf area index with a slight growth trend is larger than that of net primary productivity (NPP), ground and underground biomass and soil carbon content; 2) There are obvious regional differences in spatial view, spatial distribution of results are consistent with those of watershed plant and soil, displaying the characteristics that the above major variables of mountainous regions in middle-upper reaches are greater than those of grassland meadows in the upstream and plains in the downstream. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are transcripts of more than 200 nucleotides (nt) in length, with minimal or no protein-coding capacity. Increasing evidence indicates that lncRNAs play important roles in the regulation of gene expression including in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is an important medicinal plant in China. Diterpenoid tanshinones are one of the main active components of S. miltiorrhiza. To better understand the role of lncRNAs in regulating diterpenoid biosynthesis in S. miltiorrhiza, we integrated analysis of lncRNAs, mRNAs, and transcription factors (TFs) to identify network modules underlying diterpenoid biosynthesis based on transcriptomic data. In transcriptomic data, we obtained 6,651 candidate lncRNAs, 46 diterpenoid biosynthetic pathway genes, and 11 TFs involved in diterpenoid biosynthesis. Combining the co-expression and genomic location analysis, we obtained 23 candidate lncRNA-mRNA/TF pairs that were both co-expressed and co-located. To further observe the expression patterns of these 23 candidate gene pairs, we analyzed the time-series expression of S. miltiorrhiza induced by methyl jasmonate (MeJA). The results showed that 19 genes were differentially expressed at least a time-point, and four lncRNAs, two mRNAs, and two TFs formed three lncRNA-mRNA and/or TF network modules. This study revealed the relationship among lncRNAs, mRNAs, and TFs and provided new insight into the regulation of the biosynthetic pathway of S. miltiorrhiza diterpenoids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (S-AKI) is considered to be associated with high morbidity and mortality, a commonly accepted model to predict mortality is urged consequently. This study used a machine learning model to identify vital variables associated with mortality in S-AKI patients in the hospital and predict the risk of death in the hospital. We hope that this model can help identify high-risk patients early and reasonably allocate medical resources in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: A total of 16,154 S-AKI patients from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database were examined as the training set (80%) and the validation set (20%). Variables (129 in total) were collected, including basic patient information, diagnosis, clinical data, and medication records. We developed and validated machine learning models using 11 different algorithms and selected the one that performed the best. Afterward, recursive feature elimination was used to select key variables. Different indicators were used to compare the prediction performance of each model. The SHapley Additive exPlanations package was applied to interpret the best machine learning model in a web tool for clinicians to use. Finally, we collected clinical data of S-AKI patients from two hospitals for external validation. Results: In this study, 15 critical variables were finally selected, namely, urine output, maximum blood urea nitrogen, rate of injection of norepinephrine, maximum anion gap, maximum creatinine, maximum red blood cell volume distribution width, minimum international normalized ratio, maximum heart rate, maximum temperature, maximum respiratory rate, minimum fraction of inspired O2, minimum creatinine, minimum Glasgow Coma Scale, and diagnosis of diabetes and stroke. The categorical boosting algorithm model presented significantly better predictive performance [receiver operating characteristic (ROC): 0.83] than other models [accuracy (ACC): 75%, Youden index: 50%, sensitivity: 75%, specificity: 75%, F1 score: 0.56, positive predictive value (PPV): 44%, and negative predictive value (NPV): 92%]. External validation data from two hospitals in China were also well validated (ROC: 0.75). Conclusions: After selecting 15 crucial variables, a machine learning-based model for predicting the mortality of S-AKI patients was successfully established and the CatBoost model demonstrated best predictive performance. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the predictive performance of different deep learning models using gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI in predicting microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: The data of 233 patients with pathologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated at our hospital from June 2016 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Three deep learning models were constructed based on three different delineate methods of the region of interest (ROI) using the Darwin Scientific Research Platform (Beijing Yizhun Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., China). Manual segmentation of ROI was performed on the T1-weighted axial Hepatobiliary phase images. According to the ratio of 7:3, the samples were divided into a training set (N=163) and a validation set (N=70). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the predictive performance of three models, and their sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were assessed. Results: Among 233 HCC patients, 109 were pathologically MVI positive, including 91 men and 18 women, with an average age of 58.20 ± 10.17 years; 124 patients were MVI negative, including 93men and 31women,with an average age of 58.26 ± 10.20 years. Among three deep learning models, 2D-expansion-DL model and 3D-DL model showed relatively good performance, the AUC value were 0.70 (P=0.003) (95% CI 0.57--0.82) and 0.72 (P<0.001) (95% CI 0.60-0.84), respectively. In the 2D-expansion-DL model, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 0.7143, 0.739 and 0.688. In the 3D-DL model, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were 0.6714, 0.800 and 0.575, respectively. Compared with the 3D-DL model (based on 3DResNet), the 2D-DL model is smaller in scale and runs faster. The frames per second (FPS) for the 2D-DL model is 244.7566, which ismuch larger than that of the 3D-DL model (73.3374). Conclusion: The deep learning model based on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI could preoperatively evaluate MVI in HCC. Considering that the predictive performance of 2D-expansion-DL model was almost the same as the 3D-DL model and the former was relatively easy to implement, we prefer the 2Dexpansion-DL model in practical research. A rich of global land use/land cover (LULC) products exist, such as DISCover, FORM-GLC30, CCI_LC, MCD12Q1, etc. These products play an extremely important role in the study of the earth’s biochemical cycles and climate change simulations. However, these LULC products vary in spatial and temporal scale. Scale conversion is one of the effective means to solve this difference, which can realize the spatial matching between different LULC products and complete the effective integration of LULC products with other geographic element products. Due to data acquisition limitations, this study adopted China as a case study for examining the accuracy of upscaling of five LULC products, FORM-GLC30, GLC_FCS30, CCI_LC, MCD12Q1, and CNLUC. The original resolution of FORM-GLC30 and GLC_FCS30 is 30 m, and that of CCI_LC, MCD12Q1, and CNLUCC is 300 m, 500 m, and 1 km, respectively. There are four different upscaling methods of grid center, maximum area, maximum aggregation, and nearest neighbor to amplify the resolution to 1 ∼ 8 km. Within the upscaling experiment, using area change index and Shannon index to assess accuracy of LULC Product upscaling. The results showed that: (1) the rank of the upscaling methods according to upscaling accuracy was nearest neighbor > grid center > maximum area > maximum aggregation. (2) The most suitable scales for upscaling of FORM-GLC30, GLC_FCS30, CCI_LC, MCD12Q1, and CNLUCC are 2 km, 2 km∼6 km, 2 km∼5 km, 2 km, and 3 km∼5 km, respectively. (3) The CNLUCC dataset in China was shown to be suitable for conducting relevant long-term time-series research due to its long time span, high data accuracy, and relatively higher accuracy when upscaled. BACKGROUND Several studies have proved the safety and feasibility of robot-assisted percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in reducing the occupational hazards of interventionists while achieving precision medicine. However, an independently developed robot-assisted system for PCI in China has not yet emerged. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of a robot-assisted system for elective PCI in China. METHODS This preclinical trial included 22 experimental pigs and preliminarily supported the safety and feasibility of the ETcath200 robot-assisted system for PCI. Then, eleven patients with coronary heart disease who met the inclusion criteria and had clinical indications for elective PCI were enrolled. PCI was performed using a robot-assisted system. The primary outcomes were clinical success (defined as visual estimated residual stenosis < 30% after PCI and no major adverse cardiovascular events during hospitalization and within 30 days after PCI) and technical success (defined as the ability to use the robot-assisted system to complete PCI successfully without conversion to the traditional manual PCI). RESULTS Eleven patients were included in this clinical trial. A drug-eluting stent with a diameter of 3 mm (interquartile range: 2.75-3.5 mm) and a length of 26 mm (interquartile range: 22-28 mm) was deployed in all patients. The clinical success rate was 100%, with no PCI-related complications and no in-hospital or 30-day major adverse cardiovascular events, and the technical success rate was 100%. Objective: Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (LRP-1) and survivin are associated with radiotherapy resistance in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). This study aimed to evaluate the value of a radiomics model based on dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) for the preoperative assessment of LRP-1 and survivin expressions in these patients. Methods: One hundred patients with pathologically confirmed LARC who underwent DCE-MRI before surgery between February 2017 and September 2021 were included in this retrospective study. DCE-MRI perfusion histogram parameters were calculated for the entire lesion using post-processing software (Omni Kinetics, G.E. Healthcare, China), with three quantitative parameter maps. LRP-1 and survivin expressions were assessed by immunohistochemical methods and patients were classified into low- and high-expression groups. Results: Four radiomics features were selected to construct the LRP-1 discrimination model. The LRP-1 predictive model achieved excellent diagnostic performance, with areas under the receiver operating curve (AUCs) of 0.853 and 0.747 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The other four radiomics characteristics were screened to construct the survivin predictive model, with AUCs of 0.780 and 0.800 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical usefulness of the radiomics models. Conclusion: DCE-MRI radiomics models are particularly useful for evaluating LRP-1 and survivin expressions in patients with LARC. Our model has significant potential for the preoperative identification of patients with radiotherapy resistance and can serve as an essential reference for treatment planning. Background. Diet, environment, and genomic context have a significant impact on humans' intestinal microbiota. Moreover, migration may be accompanied by changes in human eating habits and living environment, which could, in turn, affect the intestinal microbiota. Located in southwestern China, Tibet has an average altitude of 4,000 meters and is known as the world's roof. Xianyang is situated in the plains of central China, with an average altitude of about 400 meters. Methods. To understand the association between intestinal microbiota and population migration, we collected the fecal samples from 30 Tibetan women on the first day (as TI1st), six months (as TI2nd), and ten months (as TI3rd) following migration from Tibet to Xianyang. Fecal samples were collected from 29 individuals (belonging to the Han women) as a control. The dietary information of the Tibetan women and the Han women was gathered. We performed a 16S rRNA gene survey of the collected fecal samples using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Results. Following the migration, the alpha and beta diversity of Tibetan women's intestinal microbiota appeared unaffected. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) analysis showed that Klebsiella, Blautia, and Veillonella are potential biomarkers at TI1st, while Proteobacteria and Enterobacteriaceae were common in TI3rd. Finally, functional prediction by phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt) found no significant up-regulation or down-regulation gene pathway in the intestinal microbiota of Tibetan women after migration. The present study reveals that the higher stability in Tibetan women's intestinal microbiota was less affected by the environment and diet, indicating that Tibetan women's intestinal microbiota is relatively stable. Objective: To compare the characteristics of COVID-19 patients and healthy people, including living habits and living environment in Danzhou, Hainan province, to provide evidence for policy making for disease control. Methods: Case-control study was used, and the 1:1 control group in Danzhou based on the matching conditions including same age and sex, age ±2 years. The main contents of the questionnaire included social democracy characteristics, living habits, living environment, and exposure history. Results: There were 14 COVID - 19 patients in Danzhou. In the comparison of the daily habits, it was found that the number of people in the case group who had the habit of wearing masks after catching a cold was lower than that in the control group. And the number of people in the case group who had the habit of spitting was higher than that in the control group. Besides, the results of the survey on eating habits showed that there was less than half of the subjects used serving chopsticks and spoons when having dinner with family members or others, both in the case group and the control group. In the comparison of preferred food types, 6 people (42.9%) in the case group preferred cold vegetables, while only 2 people (14.3%) in the control group preferred cold vegetables. In comparison with the travel history and contact history of COVID-19, 12 people (85.7%) in the case group had travel history in Wuhan or other regions, but only two in the control group had a history of living in Wuhan or other places.1:1 paired analysis showed that 5 pairs of had habits of spitting in the case group but had no habits of spitting in control group, and 1 pair had habits of spitting in control group but had no habits of spitting in the case group, the OR value was 5.0. Besides, there were 2 pairs of had the habit of wearing a mask when they went out after catching a cold in control group but not in the case group, and 4 pairs of had the habit of wearing a mask when they went out after catching a cold in control group but no such habit in case group, and the OR value was 0.5. In the investigation of dietary habits, the comparison results of whether like cold vegetables, tea and parties showed that the OR values were all greater than 1. To improve students' performance effectively, many Chinese universities are establishing systems to predict student's academic performance and sending student's academic early alerts. With student's population of over 600,000, Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools (CFCRS) has become one of the booming higher education forms in China. Compared with students in the non-cooperatively running programs, CFCRS students' academic performances are weaker on average. To predict the academic-at-risk students and provide efficient supports to the students, a precise and prompt academic prediction is in great need. Therefore, this research aims at representing a more efficient and accurate model to predict academic performance of CFCRS students which will be based on graph convolutional network. In this research, student's similarity is measured on academic performance by Pearson correlation coefficient. An undirected graph in which similar students are connected is conducted. Feature matrix is composed of students' previous grades. In addition, graph convolutional network is trained based on the undirected graph and feature matrix. In the experiment, it shows that this model predicts certain student's performance on certain course from the final exam results in previous semesters, which might improve learning efficiency and teaching quality. Background China is facing a more severe stroke challenge. In 2017, China fully implemented the zero-margin drug policy (ZMDP), cancelling 15% of drug markups in public hospitals. Based on the "System of Health Accounts 2011" (SHA 2011), this paper explores the changes in the economic burden of stroke in China after implementing ZMDP to provide an accurate reference for policymakers. Methods Stroke patients from 2016 to 2018 were selected by multistage stratification probability-proportional random sampling in Shanxi Province. A total of 223 187 samples were included. Regression discontinuity design (RDD) was used to measure the change of drug proportion and cost. Sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis were implied to determine the stability of the results. Results The current curative expenditure on stroke from 2016 to 2018 was 4374.69, 3727.22, and 3752.52 million Chinese Yuan (CNY). About 90% of the cost occurred during hospitalization, and 60% in general hospitals. After the implementation of ZMDP, the drug proportion from 46.54% (interquartile range (IQR) = 37.10%, 55.14%) in 2016 to 36.40% (IQR = 25.82%, 48.58%) in 2018, and average hospitalization cost per stay was from 7950.02 (IQR=4938.76, 12 639.90) CNY in 2016 to 7362.08 (IQR=4892.82, 11 501.40) CNY in 2018. RDD showed the drug proportion decreased by 2.76% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.17%, 4.35%, P = 0.001), and the expense decreased by 4698.34 (95% CI = 3047.59, 6349.09, P < 0.001) CNY. Conclusions The economic burden of stroke patients in China was severe. ZMDP played a noticeable effect in reducing drug proportion and hospitalization costs. As eco-compensation is considered an effective economic instrument for controlling the industrial water pollution in transboundary basin, this study aims to explore a transboundary eco-compensation mechanism for Songhua River Basin that is one of the seven major drainage basins in China. Using a panel dataset of eleven cities in this basin tracked from 1992 to 2016, we empirically examined the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis by analyzing the relationship between economic development and industrial water pollution. Then, we developed two econometric models to quantify the wastewater discharge allowance and eco-compensation of investigated cities, respectively. The results specifically reveal the inverted U-curve effects of GRP (gross regional product) on industrial wastewater discharge, which displays an evidence of EKC in the field of transboundary water pollution in China. Moreover, our results verify the polluter pays principle that polluter should be responsible for its pollution behavior through paying of eco-compensation. Chitin is a linear homopolymer of acetylated β-(1,4)-linked glucosamine residues and among the most abundant polysaccharides in the world. Here, we identified and purified a novel chitosanase (CCHA) from Aspergillus oryzae NKY2017 obtained from Hu'bei province in China. Construction of a cDNA library from this strain revealed the gene sequence subsequently expressed in Pichia pastoris and subsequent construction of multi-copy expression plasmids (CCHA1/2/3/4). The results demonstrated elevated levels of CCHA expression in multi-copy strains, with strain CCHA4 chosen for high-density fermentation and enzyme-activity experiments. High-density fermentation achieved a CCHA yield of 22,500 U/mL, and temperature and pH optimization resulted in the highest CCHA activity at 40°C and 4.0, respectively. We used this enzyme for a large-scale preparation of oligosaccharides: 4 g enzyme could convert 150 kg chitosan into oligosaccharides in 24 h at 40°C. The results show that factor-market distortion has both direct and indirect effects on industrial wastewater discharge and that technological innovation functions as a partial intermediary in the process of factor-market distortion influencing industrial wastewater discharge, with the intermediate effect value of 18.8%. With the improvement of technological innovation level, an inverted U-shaped curve law of “intensifying first and then improving” appears between factor-market distortion and industrial wastewater discharge. Background. The COVID-19 outbreak required the significantly increased working time and intensity for health professionals in China, which may cause stress signs. Methods. From March 2-13 of 2020, 4,618 health professionals in China were included in an anonymous, self-rated online survey regarding their concerns on exposure to the COVID-19 outbreak. The questionnaires consisted of five parts: basic demographic information and epidemiological exposure; occupational and psychological impact; concerns during the episode; coping strategies; and the Huaxi Emotional-Distress Index (HEI). Results. About 24.2% of respondents experienced high levels of anxiety or/and depressive symptoms since the COVID-19 outbreak. Respondents who worried about their physical health and those who had COVID-19 infected friends or close relatives were more likely to have high HEI levels, than those without these characteristics. Further, family relationship was found to have an independent protective effect against high HEI levels. Their main concerns were that their families would not be cared for and that they would not be able to work properly. Compared to respondents with clear emotional problems, those with somewhat hidden emotional issues adopted more positive coping measures. Conclusions. About a quarter of medical staff experienced psychological problems during the pandemic of COVID-19. The psychological impact of stressful events was related to worrying about their physical health, having close COVID-19 infected acquaintances and family relationship issues. The Huaihe River Basin is located in-between the north-south climate transitional zone in China and is China's important congested area and production base. The land-use of the environment was occupied by the land-use for social and economics. This paper aims to have a comprehensive understanding about land-use and vegetation evolution of the basin over the past 30 years. In view of 5 years (1985, 1990, 2000, 2005, and 2014) land-use data and remote sensing data about NDVI, land-use dynamic degree, and land-use transfer matrix were used to analyze the dynamics of land use. Spatial overlay was used to study vegetation change characteristics of the basin. The present study investigates the evolution trend of vegetation coverage based on spatial overlay analysis. We found that water bodies and urban lands of the basin increased during 1985-2014. On the other hand, the area of artificial vegetation, natural vegetation, and wetland were reduced. The impact was gradually increased by human intervention on various land use types. Overall vegetation coverage level shows deteriorative development, and distribution areas were discrete. The excellent vegetation coverage of natural vegetation and wetland didn't have obvious changes, but the high coverage significantly decreased. Taken as a whole, the natural vegetation coverage was reduced. The vegetation coverage level of artificial water in the land-use for social and economics had greatly increased, but the overall trend of vegetation coverage level of artificial vegetation and resident construction land showed a decreasing trend. With the acceleration of urbanisation and industrialisation, atmospheric particulate pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems in China. In this study, green spaces in Baoji city were classified into different patterns on the basis of vegetation structural parameters, i.e., horizontal structure, vertical structure and vegetation type. Eleven types of green space with different structures were selected for investigating the relationships between atmospheric particulate matter (PM) concentration and green spaces with different vegetation structure, based on the "matrix effect" of environmental factors, i.e., location, time, wind velocity, temperature, humidity and area to the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 in the green spaces. The results showed that: (1) Location, time, wind velocity, temperature and humidity had highly significant effects on the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10. In sunny and breeze weather conditions, PM2.5 and PM10 concentration increased with the wind velocity and humidity, and decreased with the temperature. The range of PM10 concentration was greater than the range of PM2.5 concentration. (2) Less than 2 hectares of the green space had no significant influence on the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10. (3) The concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 showed no significant difference between all the green spaces and the control group. There was no significant difference in the reduction of PM2.5 concentration between different structural green spaces, but there was a significant difference in the reduction of PM10 concentration. The above results will provide a theoretical basis and practical methods for the optimisation of urban green space structures for improving urban air quality effectively in the future. The article reports on the introduction of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and its impact on the risk for vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) in Beijing, China, from 2014 to 2016. The government introduced IPV into the city's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in December 2014. Acute flaccid paralysis surveillance was used to identify VAPP cases in the city during the period.

Background: There is global health concern that the mass movement of pilgrims to and from Mecca annually could contribute to the international spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). In China, about 11,000 Muslim pilgrims participate in the Hajj gathering in Mecca annually. This is the first report of MERS-CoV and respiratory virus molecular screening of returning pilgrims at points of entry in China from 2013 to 2015.Methods and Results: A total of 847 returning Hajj pilgrims participated in this study. The test results indicated that of the travelers, 34 tested positive for influenza A virus, 14 for influenza B virus, 4 for metapneumo virus, 2 for respiratory syncytial virus, and 3 for human coronavirus. There was a significant difference in the rates of positive and negative influenza virus tests between Hajj pilgrims with symptoms and those without. The detection rates of influenza virus were not significantly different among the three years studied, at 5.3, 6.0 and 6.3% for 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The MERS-CoV and respiratory viruses detection results at points of entry in China from 2013 to 2015 indicated that there were no MERS-CoV infection but a 5.7% positive influenza viruses in returning Chinese pilgrims. Forsythiae Fructus, Lianqiao in Chinese, is one of the most fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Both green Forsythia (GF) and ripe Forsythia (RF) are referred to Forsythiae Fructus in medicinal applications. In most cases, they are used without distinction. In this study, a metabolomics approach was performed to compare componential differences of two Forsythiae Fructus aqueous extracts subtypes. Principal component analysis (PCA) score plots from the UPLC-MS data showed clear separation between the two subtypes, indicating there are significant differences in the chemical components between GF and RF. Meanwhile, the anticancer activity of them was also compared. GF exhibited much stronger antitumor activity than RF against B16-F10 murine melanoma both in vitro and in vivo. 15 chemical compounds were identified as specific markers for distinguishing GF and RF. Among these marker compounds, forsythoside I, forsythoside A, forsythoside E and pinoresinol were demonstrated to be key important active compounds that account for the different anticancer efficacies of GF and RF. Our data suggest that GF and RF should be distinctively used in clinical applications, particularly in the anticancer formulas, in which GF should be preferentially prescribed. Background: The incidence of young coronary heart disease (CHD, ≤45 years) in China is increasing. Secondary prevention to counter this trend is an important contemporary public health issure.Methods: A total of 5288 patients (≤45 years) diagnosed with CHD and hospitalized at the Chinese PLA General Hospital and Anzhen Hospital, both in Beijing, were enrolled after satisfying the inclusion criteria.Results: Young CHD patients increased in number from 2010 to 2014, especially men. Among the studied patients, there was no significant change over those years in blood pressure, but heart rate increased significantly (P < 0.05) and body mass index showed a rising trend (P > 0.05). The incidence of hypertension increased from 40.7 to 47.5%, diabetes from 20.3 to 26.1%, and hyperlipidemia from 27.3 to 35.7% (P < 0.05). However, the incidences of smoking and drinking both trended downward (P < 0.05). The levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides also showed a downward trend (P < 0.05), as did levels of low-density lipoprotein, but not to the point of statistical significance (P > 0.05). Mortality during hospitalization decreased significantly from 2010 to 2014 (P < 0.05), but there was no significant improvement in the incidences of cardiac death and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) after 1-year follow-up (P > 0.05).Conclusions: Over the 5 years studied, the overall incidence of cardiac death and MACE for young CHD patients (≤45 years) has shown little improvement. Urban expansion form is the most direct manifestation of urban expansion in space. Although it has been widely and vigorously studied, relatively little attention has been paid to reveal its spatiotemporal characteristics at the administrative level over a long timeframe. In this study, 31 Chinese municipalities and provincial capitals were selected as subjects to identify the urban expansion forms of provincial and higher level cities in China. First, urban expansion processes of these cities in the past four decades were reconstructed using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) technology. Then, the overall characteristics of urban expansion were presented to scientifically determine the urban expansion forms of the provincial and higher level cities in China. Afterwards, the annual expansion area per city (AEAC) index was employed to describe the urban expansion processes and determine the important time nodes of the 31 cities. Lastly, the urban expansion type (UET) index was adopted to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of urban expansion forms. Results indicate that (1) from the 1970s to 2013, urban lands in provincial and higher level cities in China expanded dramatically, with the central built-up area increasing by over 5 times, and urban expansion demonstrating an apparent spatial difference. The expansion rate of cities in East China was fastest with an AEAC of 13.78 km2, followed by that in Central China (AEAC = 9.67 km2). The urban expansion rate was slowest in West China (AEAC = 7.11 km2); (2) Affected by the national macro policies, urban expansion processes successively experienced four different stages: a slow expansion period (1970s-1987), an accelerating expansion period (1987-1995), a slowdown expansion period (1995-2000), and a high-speed fluctuating expansion period (after 2000); (3) The urban expansion forms of municipalities and provincial capitals were mainly edge-expansion supported by infilling expansion. The leapfrog form contributed minimally to urban expansion; (4) The edge-expansion form surged before 2010 and gradually slowed down after 2010. Background: The outcome of preterm infants has been varied in different hospitals and regions in developing countries. Regular clinical monitor are needed to know the effects of health care. This study aimed to describe the survival and morbidity rates of extreme to very preterm infants in 15 neonatal-intensive care hospitals in China. Methods: Data were collected from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014 for preterm neonates with gestational age (GA) between 24 and 31 complete weeks born in hospitals from our collaborative study group. The primary outcomes were survival and major morbidities prior to hospital discharge. Major morbidities included bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and sepsis. Mutivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factor influencing on the outcomes. Results: The preterm birth rate was 9.9 % (13 701/138 240). The proportion of extreme to very preterm infants was 1. 1 % and 11.8 % respectively. The survival rate prior to discharge was increased with increasing GA (0, 24 weeks; 28 %, 25 weeks; 84.8 %, 26 weeks; 83.5 %, 27 weeks; 87.4 %, 28 weeks; 90.7 %, 29 weeks; 93.9 %, 30 weeks; 96 %, 31 weeks). Rate of survival and without severe morbidity according to GA were 0 at 24 weeks, 8 % at 25 weeks, 60.6 % at 26 weeks; 53.2 % at 27 weeks; 62.3 % at 28 weeks; 67.9 % at 29 weeks; 79.1 % at 30 weeks, 85.8 % at 31 weeks respectively. Rate of antenatal steroid use was 56 %. The antenatal steroid use was lower in GA < 28 weeks infants than that in GA between 28 and 32 weeks (28-44.3 % vs 49.7-60.1 %, P < 0.05). Infants at the lowest GAs had a highest incidence of morbidities. Overall, 58.5 % had respiratory distress syndrome, 12.5 % bronchopulmonary dysplasia, 3.9 % necrotizing enterocolitis, 15.4 % intraventricular hemorrhage, 5.4 % retinopathy of prematurity, 28.4 % patent ductus arteriosus, and 9.7 % sepsis. Mortality and morbidity were influenced by gestational age (OR = 0.891, 95 % CI: 0.796-0. 999, p = 0.0047 and OR = 0.666, 95 % CI: 0.645-0.688, p = 0.000 respectively), birth weight (OR = 0.520, 95 % CI: 0.420-0. 643, p = 0.000 and OR = 0.921, 95 % CI: 0.851-0.997, p = 0.041 respectively), SGA (OR = 1.861, 95 % CI: 1.148-3.017, p = 0. 012 and OR = 1.511, 95 % CI: 1.300-1.755, p = 0.000 respectively), Apgar score <7 at 5 min (OR = 1.947, 95 % CI: 1.269-2. 987, p = 0.002 and OR = 2.262, 95 % CI: 1.950-2.624, p = 0.000 respectively). The survival rate was increased with more prenatal steroid use (OR = 1.615, 95 % CI: 1.233-1.901, p = 0.033). Conclusion: Although most of the preterm infants with GAs ≥26 weeks survived, a high complication in survivors still can be observed. Rate of survival of GAs less than 26 weeks was still low, and quality improvement methods should be used to look into increasing the use of antenatal steroids in the very preterm births. To describe the trends of the HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Chengdu city, China, consecutive cross-sectional surveys were conducted by the Chengdu Center for Disease Control and Prevention. These surveys were carried out between 2009 and 2014 according to the protocol of the national HIV Sentinel Surveillance System. For the 2422 MSM who participated in the survey, the overall HIV prevalence was 15.5% (375/2422, 95% CI 14.0-16.9%). Between 2009 and 2014, the HIV prevalence of MSM remained high, with HIV-positivity rates of 15.0%, 15.1%, 16.3%, 13.9%, 17.8% and 14.0% each year respectively (χ2 for trend = 0.008, P = 0.931). However, the majority (89.8%) of participants had had anal sex in the six months prior to the interview, and the percentage always using condoms during anal sex increased over the study period (36.7% in 2009, 39.8% in 2010, 36.9% in 2011, 46.2% in 2012, 65.1% in 2013, 49.0% in 2014; Chi-square for trend = 49.883, P < 0.001). HIV prevalence among MSM in Chengdu city has remained high. Given the continuing high levels of unprotected anal intercourse and high HIV prevalence among MSM, more effective intervention strategies are required to increase the coverage of MSM by risk-reduction interventions and to promote HIV testing among this population. Although the mapping of spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion has been widely studied, relatively little attention has been paid to detailed comparative studies on spatiotemporal patterns of urban growth at the regional level over a relatively longer timeframe. This paper was based on multi-sensor remote sensing image data and employs several landscape metrics and the centroid shift model to conduct a multi-angle quantitative analysis on urban expansion in Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan (Jing-Jin-Tang) in the period from 1970-2013. In addition, the impact analysis of urban growth on land use was adopted in this research. The results showed that Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan all experienced rapid urbanization, with an average annual urban growth rate of 7.28%, 3.9%, and 0.97%, respectively. Beijing has especially presented a single choropleth map pattern, whereas Tianjin and Tangshan have presented a double surface network pattern in orientation analysis. Furthermore, urban expansion in Beijing was mainly concentrated in Ring 4 to Ring 6 in the northwest and southeast directions, whereas the major expansion was observed in the southeast in Tianjin, primarily affected by dramatic development of Binhai New Area and Tianjin South Railway Station. Naturally, the urban expansion in Tangshan was significantly influenced by the expansion of Beijing and was primarily southwestward. The hot-zones of urbanization were observed within the ranges of 7-25 km, 6-18 km, and 0-15 km, accounting for 93.49%, 89.44% and 72.44% of the total expansion area in Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan, respectively. The majority of the newly developed urban land was converted from cultivated land and integrated from other built-up land over the past four decades. Of all new urban land in the Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan, more than 50% was converted from cultivated land, and there was a general tendency for smaller cities to have higher percentages of converted land, accounting for 50.84%, 51.19%, and 51.58%, respectively. The study revealed significant details of the temporal and spatial distributions of urban expansion in Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan and provided scientific support for the collaborative development of the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) regions. Various environmental factors affect net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland ecosystem. Extensive reports on the effects of environmental variables on NPP can be found in literature. However, the agreement on the relative importance of various factors in shaping the spatial pattern of grassland NPP has not yet been reached. Here a grassland in situ NPP database comprising 602 samples in northern China for 1980-1999 was developed based on a literature review of published biomass and forage yield field measurements. Correlation analyses and dominance analysis were used to quantify the separate and combined effects of environmental variables (climate, topography and soil) on spatial variation in NPP separately. Grassland NPP ranged from 4.76 g C m-2a-1 to 975.94 g C m-2a-1, showing significant variations in space. NPP increased with annual precipitation and declined with annual mean temperature significantly. Specifically, precipitation had the greatest impact on deserts, followed by steppes and meadows. Grassland NPP decreased with increasing altitude because of water limitation, and positively correlated with slope, but weakly correlated with aspect. Soil quality showed positive effects on NPP. Objective: To determine the breast-feeding pattern of four main ethnic groups (the Han, Uygur, Tibetan and Zhuang) living in rural western China.Design: The study utilized a cross-sectional design.Setting: Forty-five counties in ten provinces in western China in 2005.Subjects: A sample of 11 783 children younger than 36 months old (8960 Han, 1281 Uygur, 792 Tibetan and 750 Zhuang) and their mothers were recruited using a stratified, multistage, cluster random sampling method.Results: The rates of exclusive breast-feeding of children at 6 months of age in the Han, Uygur, Tibetan and Zhuang ethnic groups were 11.6 %, 0.8%, 4.4% and 13.8%, respectively. The rates of any breast-feeding for children at 24 months of age were 8.5%, 25.7%, 3.0% and 4.3% in the four ethnic groups, respectively. After adjusting for related factors, Zhuang children had a higher odds ratio of exclusive breast-feeding to 6 months compared with Han children, whereas Uygur and Tibetan children had lower odds ratio (Zhuang: OR=1.291; 95% CI 1.006, 1.657; Uugur: OR=0.062; 95% CI 0.032, 0.121; Tibetan: OR=0.323; 95% CI 0.220, 0.475). Uygur children had a lower hazard ratio of discontinued breast-feeding compared with Han children, whereas Tibetan children had a higher hazard ratio (Uygur: HR=0.368; 95% CI 0.333, 0.408; Tibetan: HR=1.366; 95% CI 1.244, 1.500).Conclusions: The breast-feeding pattern differed among the Han, Uygur, Tibetan and Zhuang ethnic groups. Orthogonal experiment was applied to optimize the water extraction parameters of zinc from Flammulina velutipes, and then the extracts were separated by membrane filter (0.45 mm) and D101 macroporous resin. Six different species of Zn were obtained and the Zn content of various species were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The optimized conditions for the extraction of Zn were: ratio of dried material to water, 1:30; extraction temperature, 75°C; extraction time, 120 minutes. About 34.43 mg Zn was extracted from 1 g dried F. velutipes powder under the optimal conditions. The recovery value for Zn was 96.5% with a low relative standard deviation. In addition, the content of the organic state of Zn was more than that of the inorganic state, and most of the organic state Zn was found in the polysaccharide and protein fractions. Background: Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan that affects most species of endothermic animals including humans with a great infection rate. The vertical transmission of T. gondii causes abortion, constituting a serious threat to humans and leading to great losses in livestock production. Distinct from population structure of T. gondii in North America and Europe, Chinese 1 (ToxoDB #9) is a dominant genotype prevalent in China. Among the isolates of Chinese 1, the Wh3 and Wh6 have different virulence and pathogenicity in mice. However, little has been known about their difference at the genomic level. Thus the next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach was used to discover the association of the phenotypical variations with the genome sequencing data and the expression and polymorphisms of the key effectors. Results: We successfully sequenced the genome of Chinese 1 strains of Wh3 and Wh6. The average sequencing depths were 63.91 and 63.61 for Wh3 and Wh6, respectively. The variations of both isolates were identified in comparison with reference genome of type I GT1 strain. There were 505,645 and 505,856 SNPs, 30,658 and 30,004 indels, 4661 and 2320 SVs, and 1942 and 3080 CNVs for Wh3 and Wh6, respectively. In target search variations of particular factors of T. gondii, the dense granule protein 3 (GRA3) and rhoptry neck protein 3 (RON3) were found to have 35 SNPs, 2 indels and 89 SNPs, 6 indels, respectively. GRA3 and RON3 were both found to have higher expression levels in less virulent Wh6 than in virulent Wh3. Both strains of type Chinese 1 share polymorphic GRA15II and ROPI/III with type I, II, and III strains. Conclusions: Sequencing of the two strains revealed that genome structure of Chinese 1 and type I strains has considerable genomic variations. Sequencing and qRT-PCR analyses of 26 effectors displayed a remarkable variation that may be associated with phenotype and pathogenic differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The objective of this study was to present the real-world patients’ portrait, and the results of niraparib treatment in China. Methods: This study included 142 patients treated with niraparib from 8 hospitals in China between December 2018 and September 2021. Patients’ characteristics were summarized. The efficacy and safety in first-line maintenance (1L-M), platinum-sensitive recurrence maintenance (PSR-M), and treatment for ovarian cancer were evaluated. Survival outcomes and the factors influencing progression-free survival (PFS) were estimated. Results: The 93 patients received Niraparib as 1L-M, 31 as PSR-M and 18 as salvage. BRCA status was wild type or unknown in 87.3% of patients. With a median follow-up time of 8.7 months, the median PFS (mPFS) for 1L-M has not yet been reached, and the mPFS for PSR-M and salvage therapy was 10.5 and 5.7 months, respectively. Responses to last chemotherapy and cancer antigen 125 value before taking niraparib were 2 important factors affecting PFS among 1L and PSR patients. The 12.7% (18/142) of patients experienced grade ≥3 hematologic adverse events and 23.2% experienced dose adjustment. It was noteworthy that when the interval of chemotherapy and niraparib <21 days, the incidence of grade ≥3 adverse events increased significantly (p=0.0355). Conclusion: Generally, niraparib was effective and well tolerated, which was consistent with the results of prospective trials. Objectives. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of guided imagery training on heart rate variability in individuals while performing spaceflight emergency tasks. Materials and Methods. Twenty-one student subjects were recruited for the experiment and randomly divided into two groups: imagery group (n=11) and control group (n=10). The imagery group received instructor-guided imagery (session 1) and self-guided imagery training (session 2) consecutively, while the control group only received conventional training. Electrocardiograms of the subjects were recorded during their performance of nine spaceflight emergency tasks after imagery training. Results. In both of the sessions, the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), the standard deviation of all normal NN (SDNN), the proportion of NN50 divided by the total number of NNs (PNN50), the very low frequency (VLF), the low frequency (LF), the high frequency (HF), and the total power (TP) in the imagery group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Moreover, LF/HF of the subjects after instructor-guided imagery training was lower than that after self-guided imagery training. Conclusions. Background: Osteoporosis (OP) and osteoarthritis (OA) are prevalent skeletal disorders among postmenopausal women. Coexistence is common especially that of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) and lumbar OA. An hypothesis has been raised that OP and OA might share the same pathogenic mechanism, and pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) were reported to have anti-osteoporosis and anti-osteoarthritis properties, but this suggestion was based primarily on biomarker data. Therefore, whether these two effects could take place simultaneously has not yet been investigated. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) is designed to explore the effect of PEMFs for PMO and concomitant lumbar OA.Methods/design: The study will include PMO patients (postmenopausal women; aged between 50 and 70 years; have been postmenopausal for at least 5 years and diagnosed with OP using proximal femur T-score) with concomitant lumbar OA (patients with confounding disorders like diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and previous fracture history, etcetera, will be excluded) will be randomly assigned to two arms: PEMFs group and sham PEMFs group. There will be 25 participants in each arm (50 in total) and the outcome assessment, including the primary endpoint (proximal femur bone mineral density), will be performed at 5 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after enrollment.Discussion: PMO and lumbar OA are prominent public health problem, especially for postmenopausal women. Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of smoothened protein (Smo), a sonic hedgehog (Shh) signalling component, in synovium of RA and its role in the survival and apoptosis of endothelial cells. Methods. The expression of Smo pxrotein in RA synovial tissue was examined by immunohistochemistry. Real-time PCR and western blotting techniques were employed to measure the expression of Shh signalling components in EA.hy926 endothelial cells exposed to TNF-α in the presence or absence of cyclopamine (a Smo-specific antagonist). Lastly, the effect of cyclopamine and Smo small interfering RNA on apoptosis induced by TNF-α and actinomycin D (ActD) was determined. Results. We found that Smo was highly expressed in synovial tissues of RA, especially in endothelial cells, compared with the trauma group. TNF-α significantly increased the expression of Shh signalling components in EA.hy926 endothelial cells, while cyclopamine decreased the expression of Shh signalling components. EA.hy926 endothelial cells treated with various concentrations of cyclopamine (2–8 μmol/l) showed a significant decrease in cell viability and cell survival rate, and an increase in the rate of cell apoptosis compared with endothelial cells treated with TNF-α and ActD ( P < 0.05). EA.hy926 endothelial cells transfected with Smo-siRNA also showed a lower cell survival rate and higher apoptotic rate, compared with cells in the control group ( P < 0.05). Conclusion. Background Currently, there is no cure for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD/BMD). However, clinical trials with new therapeutic strategies are being conducted or considered. A comprehensive database is critical for patient recruitment and efficacy evaluation. China has the largest population, yet, no comprehensive database for DMD/BMD is available. Our study registered the data of the DMD/BMD patients in East China. Methods A modified registry form of Remudy (http://www.remudy.jp/) was applied to Chinese DMD/BMD patients through the outpatient clinic at Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai during the period of August 2011 to December 2013. The data included geographic distribution of patients, age at diagnosis, clinical manifestation, genetic analysis and treatment status. Results 194 DMD and 35 BMD patients were registered. Most patients lived in East China, namely Jiangsu province, Anhui province, Zhejiang province, Shanghai, Jiangxi province, Fujian province and Shandong province. All individuals aged less than 18 years (age limit to a children's hospital). Diagnosis was made for a majority of patients during the age of 3-4 (16.6%) and 7-8 (14.8%) years old. Exon deletion was the most frequent genetic mutations (65.5% and 74.3%) followed by point mutations (14.4% and 11.4%), duplications (9.8% and 8.6%) and small insertion/deletion (9.3% and 2.9%) for DMD and BMD, respectively. 82.5% of DMD registrants were ambulatory, and all the BMD registrants were able to walk. 26.3% of DMD registrants have been treated with steroids. Cardiac functions were examined for 46.4% DMD boys and 45.7% BMD boys and respiratory functions were examined for 18.6% DMD boys and 14.3% BMD boys. Four boys with abnormal cardiac function were prescribed for treatment with cardiac medicine. 33.2% of DMD patients are eligible for exon skipping therapy, and among them 9.2% and 4.3% patients are eligible for skipping exon 51 and 53, respectively. Conclusions The database is the first linking accurate genetic diagnosis with clinical manifestation and treatment status of dystrophinopathy patients in East China. It provides comprehensive information essential for further patient management, especially for promotion of international cooperation in developing experimental therapies such as exon skipping and read-through of nonsense mutations targeting a subgroup of DMD patient population. Background. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an individualized medicine by observing the symptoms and signs (symptoms in brief) of patients. We aim to extract the meaningful herb-symptom relationships from large scale TCM clinical data. Methods. To investigate the correlations between symptoms and herbs held for patients, we use four clinical data sets collected from TCM outpatient clinical settings and calculate the similarities between patient pairs in terms of the herb constituents of their prescriptions and their manifesting symptoms by cosine measure. To address the large-scale multiple testing problems for the detection of herbsymptom associations and the dependence between herbs involving similar efficacies, we propose a network-based correlation analysis (NetCorrA) method to detect the herb-symptom associations. Results. The results show that there are strong positive correlations between symptom similarity and herb similarity, which indicates that herb-symptom correspondence is a clinical principle adhered to by most TCM physicians. Furthermore, the NetCorrA method obtains meaningful herb-symptom associations and performs better than the chi-square correlation method by filtering the false positive associations. Conclusions. Symptoms play significant roles for the prescriptions of herb treatment. The herb-symptom correspondence principle indicates that clinical phenotypic targets (i.e., symptoms) of herbs exist and would be valuable for further investigations. physicians can encourage the development of novel clinical prescriptions and the detection of effective empirical TCM clinical therapies [1]. Strobilanthes tonkinensis Lindau is a member of the family Acanthaceae, which was originated from Yunnan province of China and is used as tea and health promotion. Here, we reported the complete chloroplast genome sequence of S. tonkinensis using Illumina high-throughput sequencing approach. The size of the chloroplast genome is 144,765 bp in length, containing a pair of inverted repeats (IRs, 17,362 bp) that are separated by the large single-copy (LSC, 92,248 bp), and small single-copy (SSC, 17,793 bp) regions. A total of 129 genes were identified, including 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 84 protein-coding genes. The overall GC content is 38.21%. Interests in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data analysis is driven by the constantly increased spatial resolutions of the acquired images, where the geometries of scene objects can be better defined than in lower resolution data. This paper addresses the problem of the built-up areas extraction in high-resolution (HR) SAR images, which can provide a wealth of information to characterize urban environments. Strong backscattering behavior is one of the distinct characteristics of built-up areas in a SAR image. However, in practical applications, only a small portion of pixels characterizing the built-up areas appears bright. Thus, specific texture measures should be considered for identifying these areas. This paper presents a novel texture measure by combining the proposed labeled co-occurrence matrix technique with the specific spatial variability structure of the considered land-cover type in the fuzzy set theory. The spatial variability is analyzed by means of variogram, which reflects the spatial correlation or non-similarity associated with a particular terrain surface. The derived parameters from the variograms are used to establish fuzzy functions to characterize the built-up class and non built-up class, separately. The proposed technique was tested on TerraSAR-X images acquired of Nanjing (China) and Barcelona (Spain), and on a COSMO-SkyMed image acquired of Hangzhou (China). In order to better understand the spatiotemporal variations and interrelationships of greenhouse gases (GHG), monthly surface fluxes and profile concentrations of GHG (CO, NO and CH) in karst areas in the Guizhou Province, southwest China, were measured from June 2006 to May 2007. GHG fluxes showed high variability, with a range of 460.9-1,281.2 mg m h for CO, −25.4 to 81.5 μg m h for NO and −28.7 to −274.9 μg m h for CH, but no obvious seasonal change trends of the fluxes existed. Profile concentrations of CO, NO and CH varied between 0.5 and 31.5 mL L, 0.273 and 0.734, and 0.1 and 3.5 μL L, respectively. In general, concentrations of CO and NO increased with depth, while CH had an inverse trend. However, in October, November and January, the reversal of depth patterns of GHG concentrations took place below 15 cm, close to the soil-rock interface. The spatiotemporal distribution of CO in soil profile was significantly positively correlated with that of NO ( p < 0.05-0.01) and negatively correlated with that of CH ( p < 0.01). The correlation analysis showed that soil temperature and moisture may be responsible for GHG dynamics in the soils, rather than the exchange of GHG between land and atmosphere. Conlarium duplumascospora gen. et. sp. nov. and Jobellisia guangdongensis sp. nov. are described and illustrated from submerged wood collected from Guangdong Province, China. Conlarium duplumascospora is characterized by gregarious, coriaceous and beaked ascomata; cylindrical, unitunicate asci with a bipartite apical ring; biseriate, fusiform, hyaline, 0-5-septate ascospores with or without appendages; and anamorph with muriform conidia. Jobellisia guangdongensis is characterized by globose to subglobose, gregarious and papillate ascomata; three-layered peridium; cylindrical, unitunicate asci with a refractive apical ring; and one-septate, fusiform, greenish brown ascospores. Sequence analyses of partial nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) were performed to infer the phylogenetic affinities of these new taxa. A key to species of Jobellisia is provided. This study is to clarify the impact of vitamin A or vitamin A combined with other micronutrients supplementation on anemia and growth in preschoolers. In the present study, a total of 290 preschoolers, aged 36-72 months old were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups: vitamin A (A group), vitamin A plus zinc (AZ group), and vitamin A combined with additional multiple-micronutrient (AMM group). After 6-month supplementation, the height and height-for-age z-score gains of the AZ group were significantly higher than the other groups; the weight gain of the AMM group was greater than the other groups. Compared with baseline values, the concentrations of hemoglobin, and zinc at the end significantly increased in all 3 groups. The incremental concentrations of hemoglobin in the AMM group were significant higher than in the other two groups. Furthermore, the incremental concentrations of serum retinol in the AMM group, and the increase in serum zinc concentrations in the AZ group were significantly higher, respectively, than in the other groups. These 3 kinds of supplements in the present study are effective in enhancing height gains and are effective in reducing the prevalence of anemia. Supplementation of zinc plus vitamin A is a better way for improving children's height and height-for-age z-score. Fruits of Broussonetia papyrifera from South China were analyzed for their total chemical composition, and antioxidant activities in ethanol and aqueous extracts. In the fruit of this plant, the crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates was 7.08%, 3.72% and 64.73% of dry weight, respectively. The crude protein, crude fat and carbohydrates were 15.71%, 20.51% and 36.09% of dry weight, respectively. Fatty acid and amino acid composition of the fruit were analyzed. Unsaturated fatty acid concentration was 70.6% of the total fatty acids. The percentage of the essential amino acids (EAAs) was 40.60% of the total amino acids. Furthermore, B. papyrifera fruit are rich in many mineral elements and vitamins. Total phenolic content was assessed using the Folin-Ciocalteau assay, whereas antioxidant activities were assessed by measuring the ability of the two extracts to scavenge DPPH radicals, inhibit peroxidation, and chelate ferric ions. Their reducing power was also assessed. Results indicated that the aqueous extract of B. papyrifera was a more potent reducing agent and radicalscavenger than the ethanol extract. GC-MS analysis of the ethanol extract showed the presence of some acid-containing compounds. The changes in total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in B. papyrifera from four different regions grown under normal conditions were assessed. The antioxidant activity of different extracts was positively associated with their total phenolic content. These results suggest that the fruit of B. papyrifera could be used in dietary supplement preparations, or as a food additive, for nutritional gain, or to prevent oxidation in food products. Abstract: Laboratory continuous flow-through riverbank filtration (RBF) models were developed to study the organic substances and ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency in the riverbank filtration process. The results indicated that the priority pollutants, organic substances and ammonia nitrogen, could be removed to a great extent. Dramatic progress has occurred in neonatal intensive care in tertiary centers in mid-eastern China. We investigated the characteristics of neonatal respiratory failure (NRF) including the incidence, management, outcomes and costs in 14 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of Hebei, a province at an intermediate economic level in China. Over a period of 12 consecutive months in 2007-2008, perinatal data were collected prospectively from all NICU admissions (n = 11,100). NRF was defined as severe hypoxemia requiring respiratory support for more than 24 h, and was diagnosed in 1,875 newborns (16.9%). The average birth weight of newborns with NRF was 2,200 g (range 600-5,500 g), with 60.9% <2,500 g, and 2% <1,000 g. The male:female ratio was 2.6:1. The leading diagnosis was respiratory distress syndrome; 58.3% of newborns with respiratory distress syndrome received surfactant. Continuous positive airway pressure was used more than ventilation (73.3 vs. 49.1%,p < 0.001). Overall, the mortality rate until discharge was 31.4% (583/1,859). Most deaths (432, 74.1%) followed a parental decision to withdraw care. NRF mortality varied in association with different gross domestic product levels, family annual income and nurse-to-bed ratios. The median cost of a hospital stay was 10,169 CNY (interquartile range: 6,745-16,386) for NRF survivors. We conclude that, despite the available respiratory support in these emerging NICUs, the mortality of NRF remains. This was associated with prematurity, standard of care but also with socioeconomic factors affecting treatment decisions. Assessment of efficacy of respiratory support for NRF in such emerging neonatal services should account for both standard of care and socioeconomic conditions. Copyright © 2010 S. Recently, increasing nutrient (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus) concentrations have been observed in the surface water of many countries and this nonpoint source (NPS) pollution has become an important factor in the deterioration of water quality in the upper reach of the Yangtze River Basin. In this paper, the NPS pollution loads in the upper reach of Yangtze River Basin in the year 2000 were estimated using export coefficient model and remote sensing techniques. The spatial distributions of the NPS loads within the watershed were then displayed using geographical information system. Results indicated that the total nitrogen load was 1.947×106 t and the total phosphorus load was 8.364×104 t. Aim To create a fine-scale map of the distribution of Asiatic black bears, identify landscape variables affecting the spatial range of this species and assess population trends using presence–absence data and opinions of local villagers. Location Sichuan Province, south-western China. Methods We divided the province into 15 × 15 km cells, stratified them by forest cover, elevation and road density and randomly selected 494 cells (21% of province) for surveys. In each cell, we interviewed villagers and ground-verified their reports of bear presence. We ground-truthed reports of bear absence by conducting transects for bear sign in the best available habitat. We used logistic regression to identify key variables affecting presence of bears and predict their occurrence in unsampled cells. Results We detected bears in 360 cells (73%). Models correctly predicted bear occurrence in 90.3% of cells where we detected bears and 84.5% of sampled cells where bears were absent. Models predicted 42.7% of Sichuan to be occupied by bears. Bear occurrence was strongly related to forest cover throughout the province. Roads had a negative effect in western region of province. Agricultural lands had a negative effect only when they were distant from forests. Villagers were accurate in their knowledge of bear presence or absence. Interviewed villagers ( n = 1816) thought that bears were increasing in 32%, stable in 10%, and decreasing in 58% of cells with bears. Where bear populations were perceived to be declining, villagers identified poaching as the most common cause. Main conclusions Our fine-scale distribution map can be used for future monitoring and the key landscape factors related to occupancy by bears can be used in management plans for this species. Interviewing local villagers is an efficient and reliable means of assessing distribution, and changes therein, for animals such as bears that often interact with people and leave obvious signs.
