The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the use of foreign languages affects individuals' dishonesty. We recruited native Chinese speakers who can speak English as a foreign language at universities in China, and they were randomly assigned to a native language (NL) or foreign language (FL) condition. Participants in each condition were required to finish the same tasks, in which they would benefit more from lying; the tasks were administered in either Chinese or English. We conducted one die-roll game in Study 1 and one cheap-talk sender-receiver game in Study 2. In both Study 1 and Study 2, we found that the proportion of lying was significantly lower in the FL condition than in the NL condition. Our results imply that the FL effect on dishonesty may be due to the cognitive load of communicating in a FL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the development of moral judgments of blue lies, which occur when a speaker makes false statements to benefit a group of which he or she is a member. We investigated this issue in China, where there is substantial emphasis on the nature of children's associations with groups they belong to. Participants ranged in age from 9 to 17, and we asked them to evaluate lies that were told to benefit a team representing a speaker's class, school, or country. Judgments varied systematically as a function of age, with the 17-year-olds rating lying for any form of collective less negatively than did the younger age groups. In addition, across the age groups, children's affinity tended to shift from smaller groups to broader and more abstract collectives: 9- and 11-year olds were least critical of blue lies told to benefit a speaker's class, 13-year olds were least critical of blue lies told to benefit a speaker's school, and 17-year olds were least critical of blue lies told to benefit a speaker's country. We explore whether individuals are averse to telling a Pareto white lie—a lie that benefits both themselves and another. We first review and summarize the existing evidence on Pareto white lies. We find that the evidence is relatively limited and varied in its conclusions. We then present new experimental results obtained using a coin-tossing experiment. Results are provided for both the UK and China. We find evidence of willingness to tell a partial lie (i.e., inflating reports slightly) and high levels of aversion to telling a Pareto white lie that would maximize payoffs. We also find no significant difference between willingness to tell a Pareto white lie and a selfish black lie—a lie that harms another. We find marginal evidence of more lying in China than the UK, but the overall results in the UK and China are very similar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the case of a 46-year-old gentleman originally from China who presented to the acute surgical assessment unit complaining of upper abdominal discomfort, dyspepsia and early satiety ongoing for the previous 6 months. On exam he had a palpable mass in the left upper quadrant. He underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy which was normal and later received a CT abdomen which identified a well-circumscribed soft tissue mass in the mesenteric fat and lying adjacent to the transverse colon with no obvious cleavage plane between them. Colonoscopy was then performed which was normal. After discussion at MDT he was taken for laparotomy. At laparotomy the mass was found to be adherent to major vessels, small bowel and large bowel necessitating an extended right hemicolectomy and small bowel resection. The mass itself could not be completely excised. Histology from the resected specimen confirmed desmoid tumour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
