A new technology for obtaining ethanol through the fermentation of synthesis gas, which is produced from lignocellulose by special bacteria-acidogenes is discussed in the review. The technology has a set of fundamental advantages compared to traditional methods of fermentation of sugars: versatility and high yield of alcohol. In 2012-2013, in the United States and China, industrial plants using this technology will be commissioned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
