Ideal family sizes remain at or above two in most low-fertility settings, but sub-replacement fertility ideals have been reported for urban China. The presence of restrictive family planning policies has led to a debate as to whether such ideals are genuine. This study exploits the ending of the one-child policy and the beginning of a universal two-child policy in October 2015 to investigate whether relaxing the restrictions led to an increase in ideal family size. We apply difference-in-differences and individual-level fixed-effect models to longitudinal data from a near-nationwide survey. For married individuals aged 20–39, relaxing the restrictions from one to two children increased the mean ideal family size by around 0.2 and the proportion who desired two or more children by around 19 percentage points. Findings suggest that although reported ideal family sizes have been reduced by policy restrictions, sub-replacement ideal family sizes in urban China appear to be genuine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about the social media use of online gamers compared with nongamers and whether the two forms of technology use manifest as the cumulative risk for relational and well-being outcomes in adolescents. Self-report data from 320 Chinese secondary school students (12-17 years) was collected for online gaming and social media use frequency, depression, satisfaction with life, and relationship quality with parents, teachers, and classmates. Once the sample was split into nongamers, light gamers, and heavy gamers, results showed that heavy gamers (cut-off at [greater than or equal to]2 or [greater than or equal to]3 h/d) were more depressed, used social media and the Internet more frequently and social media differently, and experienced more negative interactions with parents and classmates compared with nongamers. Significant differences were also found between light gamers and nongamers on certain variables. Findings indicate that heavy gamers are also using other media at heavy levels which places them in a more at-risk group for adverse well-being and relational outcomes.

Water N-NO3− (mg L−1) pollution is attracting global concern in the face of combating climate change and human health risks. However, there have been comparatively few comprehensively researched studies on water N-NO3− pollution with respect to N-NO3− deposition, soil nitrogen, and land-use changes. We collected a total of 7707 published sampling points on N-NO3− surface and groundwater during flooding and non-flooding seasons during 2000–2020 in China. The types of water N-NO3− pollution (>20) can be categorized as point pollution (ΔTN ≤ 0 or > 1.5) and non-point pollution (0 < ΔTN ≤ 1.5), which were then assessed with respect to soil nitrogen (ΔTN g kg−1) and water N-NO3− changes in this study. We found non-point pollution was concentrated in the Huaihe River Basin and Haihe River Basin with higher urbanization (+6%, +4%), cropland (72%, 45%), nitrogen fertilization (g m−2 yr−1) (>10), and increased wet N-NO3− deposition (WND) (kg ha−1 yr−1) (+4.6, +3). The Haihe River Basin was found to have the highest N-NO3− on its surface (306) and in its groundwater (868) and nitrogen fertilization (32). Point pollution was concentrated in the Songhua and Liaohe River Basin with the highest WND (+7.9) but slow urbanization (+1%). N-NO3− increased during the flooding season compared with the no-flooding season in serious pollution areas. N-NO3− increased in the Liaohe River and middle and low Yangtze River but was reduced in the Weihe River. Therefore, stringent criteria and management, especially during the flooding season are urgently required to mitigate the degree of N-NO3− water pollution that occurs due to intensive agriculture and urbanization with increased N-NO3− deposition. A new myxomycete species, Arcyria similaris, was reported herein. The specimens were found and collected in the field on dead bark from Jingangtai National Geopark in Henan Province of China. This species has distinct and unique morphological characteristics, including dark grayish olive sporothecae that fade to smoke gray with age, shallow saucer-shaped cups with marked reticulations and thick papillae on the inner surface, a netted capillitium with many bulges, uniformly marked with low, dense, and irregular reticulations, and spores (8.0–)9.3–10.1(–10.9) μm in diameter, marked with sparse small warts and grouped prominent warts. Apart from a comprehensive morphological study, partial sequences of the nuclear 18S rDNA and elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1α) genes were also provided in this study. Soy sauce, being a conventional condiment known for its rich flavor, has the ability to enhance the flavor of food and satisfy people's pursuits for a more enjoyable culinary experience. Consequently, it is extensively utilized in Asian cuisine. A comprehensive strategy was employed in this study, which involved multivariate statistical analysis, sensory analysis and chemical analysis of soy sauce from three production processes. Sensory analysis revealed that three types of sauce were significantly different in floral, fruity and nutty/baked aromas. Through GC × GC-TOF–MS analysis, a total of 358 potential aroma compounds were identified, among which 35 compounds were identified as markers for distinguishing the three types of soy sauce. Pyrazines were abundant in Chinese traditional-type soy sauce, while esters were predominant in Japanese soy sauce. The potential relationship between aroma compounds and aroma characteristics of soy sauce produced through three different processes was investigated. Background: Mathematics homework is highly prevalent in East Asia. Teachers and parents expect mathematics homework to improve students' performance; however, studies have not clearly defined the effectiveness of the assignment of different amounts of homework. Aims: This study analyses the differential effect of homework amount on various facets of Chinese students' mathematics achievement using a longitudinal design. It aims, thereby, to contribute to the existing knowledge of homework effectiveness and mathematics learning and to provide insights for student development. Sample: The sample included 2383 grade 9 students from a mid‐sized city with a moderate level of economic and educational development in central China. Methods: We administered a student‐reported questionnaire, collected school reports of mathematics achievements to track retrospective longitudinal variations in mathematics over half a year and analysed the differential effectiveness of homework on mathematics achievement at four hierarchical cognitive levels with Hierarchical Linear Model. Results: The results indicated that assigning more homework at the class level could enhance students' mathematics achievement at a low cognitive level, although this effectiveness tended to disappear when the set homework time reached about 1.5–2 h. We did not find evidence that assigning more homework enhances students' mathematics achievement at higher cognitive levels. Paralipsa gularis (Zeller) is a storage pest; however, in recent years it has evolved into a considerable maize pest during the late growth stage in the border region between China and other Southeast Asian countries. Bt transgenic insect-resistant maize is an effective measure in controlling a wide range of lepidopteran pests, but there is a lack of research on the toxic effects of storage pests. We tested the toxicity of Bt-Cry1Ab, Vip3Aa, and their complex proteins against P. gularis via bioassay and investigated the efficiency of Bt-(Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa) maize in controlling P. gularis during the late growth stage of maize in the period 2022–2023. The bioassay results show that the susceptibilities of P. gularis to the two Bt proteins and their complex proteins were significantly different. The LC50 values of DBNCry1Ab ("DBN9936" event), DBNVip3Aa ("DBN9501" event), DBN Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa ("DBN3601T" event), and Syngenta Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa ("Bt11" event × "MIR162" event) were 0.038 μg/g, 0.114 μg/g, 0.110 μg/g, and 0.147 μg/g, and the GIC50 values were 0.014 μg/g, 0.073 μg/g, 0.027 μg/g, and 0.026 μg/g, respectively. Determination of the expression content of the insecticidal protein in different tissues of Bt-(Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa) maize shows that the total Bt protein content in different tissues was in the following order: stalk > bract > cob > kernel. However, the bioassay results show that the mortalities of P. gularis feeding on Bt-(Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa) maize in different tissues at different growth stages were all above 93.00%. The field trial indicates that the occurrence density of larvae and plant damage rate for conventional maize were 422.10 individuals/100 plants and 94.40%, respectively, whereas no larvae were found on Bt-(Cry1Ab+Vip3Aa) maize. Castanopsis is one of the most common genus of trees in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests and tropical monsoon rainforests in China. Castanopsis hainanensis and Castanopsis wenchangensis are endemic to Hainan Island, but they were once confused as the same species due to very similar morphologies. In this study, nuclear microsatellite markers and chloroplast genomes were used to delimit C. hainanensis and C. wenchangensis. The allelic variations of nuclear microsatellites revealed that C. hainanensis and C. wenchangensis were highly genetically differentiated with very limited gene admixture. Both showed higher genetic diversity within populations and lower genetic diversity among populations, and neither had further population genetic structure. Furthermore, C. wenchangensis and C. hainanensis had very different chloroplast genomes. The independent genetic units, very limited gene admixture, different distribution ranges, and distinct habitats all suggest that C. wenchangensis and C. hainanensis are independent species, thus they should be treated as distinct conservation units. Based on the hourly rainfall gauge data and ERA5 reanalysis for the period 1980–2020, typical synoptic patterns responsible for summer regional hourly extreme precipitation events (RHEPE) over the middle and lower Yangtze River basin have been objectively identified using a circulation clustering method. It is found that the Meiyu front with different locations and intensities imbedded in the East Asian summer monsoon, and landfalling typhoons are the leading contributors. As the dominant synoptic pattern, the Meiyu front pattern is associated with ∼92% of the total RHEPE occurrence and can be categorized into a southerly strong‐Meiyu type and a northerly weak‐Meiyu type. The RHEPE occurrence shows a predominant morning peak associated with the southerly strong‐Meiyu type and a secondary late afternoon peak related to the northerly weak‐Meiyu type, in which the Meiyu front is pushed northward by the strengthened western North Pacific subtropical high accompanied by accelerated low‐level southwesterly flow. Plain Language Summary: Using ERA5 reanalysis and hourly gauge rainfall measurements in summers of 1980–2020, this study investigates the driving mechanisms and temporal variation of summer regional hourly extreme rainfall events over the middle and lower Yangtze River basin. In the context of China's increasing rural-urban migration, few studies have investigated how parental migration affects children's experience in school. The high cost of schooling, taken together with the institutional barriers in destination cities, have compelled many rural parents in China to migrate without their children, leaving them in the care of their spouses, grandparents, relatives or other caregivers. Still other parents migrate with their children, many of whom then attend urban migrant schools in their destination city. Understanding the academic engagement of children of migrant workers is particularly salient because the poor qualities of migrant schools, a lack of parental support, and exposure to competing alternatives to schooling may render both migrant children in the cities and left-behind children in the rural villages vulnerable to disengagement, and ultimately school dropout. Using data collected in 2008 in the urban Haidian and Changping districts of Beijing and rural Henan and Shaanxi provinces, the authors of this paper investigate the association between parental migration status and two measures of academic engagement, academic aspirations and the odds of liking school, by comparing migrant children attending migrant schools and left-behind children with their rural counterparts who do not have migrant parents. The authors' findings show that migrant children attending migrant schools have lower academic engagement compared to rural children of non-migrant parents. The correlation between academic engagement and parental migration status can be accounted for in part by the support children receive from family and teachers. The association between certain measures of family and school support and academic engagement also varies by parental migration status: for example, high teacher turnover rates significantly reduce migrant children's odds of liking schools, but do not affect children of non-migrant parents.

A large variety of complaint reports reflect subjective information expressed by citizens. A key challenge of text summarization for complaint reports is to ensure the factual consistency of generated summary. Therefore, in this paper, a simple and weakly supervised framework considering factual consistency is proposed to generate a summary of city-based complaint reports without pre-labeled sentences/words. Furthermore, it considers the importance of entity in complaint reports to ensure factual consistency of summary. Experimental results on the customer review datasets (Yelp and Amazon) and complaint report dataset (complaint reports of Shenyang in China) show that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in ROUGE scores and human evaluation. Objective: This study focused on casual sex motivation to explore why some users tend to have more sexual partners and are more likely to take risks in sexual practices, thereby raising their chances of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Methods: We recruited Chinese heterosexual dating app users (N = 582) online to investigate the serial mediation model. Results: Casual sex motivation for dating app use was not directly related to the diagnoses of STIs. Number of sexual partners and frequency of risky sexual behavior serially mediated the relationship between casual sex motivation and STI diagnoses. Conclusions: Using dating apps for casual sex motivation is not necessarily associated with higher incidences of STIs, provided that users do not engage in risky sexual practices. This paper outlines the field of higher education research in China from its historical roots through to its current development. It is a case study of how the field of higher education research emerged and was co-constructed by the state and the academic community of higher education researchers to become an established and recognised discipline in a national context. The rise and formation of higher education as a research field in China has been closely related with the substantive growth of the higher education system itself. Knowledge production in the field is currently characterised by being increasingly outward-looking and supported by the state. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)

As China has appeared only recently as an important knowledge producer with growing global economic significance, little is known internationally about how these processes develop and are managed within China. The rapidly expanding Chinese higher education system is playing an increasingly important role in China's knowledge economy and therefore in the global knowledge society. This paper reviews historically the changing role of Chinese universities from the planned economy to the knowledge economy, analyses their contribution of knowledge and knowledge workers, and critically reflects on the mechanisms driving or confining their future contribution to the knowledge economy. Castanopsis sclerophylla (Lindl.) Schott. is a canopy tree species of evergreen broad-leaved forests in subtropical China. In this study, the genetic diversity and population structure of C. sclerophylla were investigated by using chloroplast DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellite markers. Permutation tests with chloroplast DNA sequences indicated the presence of phylogeographic structure in C. sclerophylla. Based on nuclear microsatellite markers, Bayesian clustering analysis revealed eastern-to-western differentiation in C. sclerophylla, and the analysis of molecular variance suggested population divergence has arisen along the Xuefeng, Luoxiao, and Wuyi mountain ranges. The approximate Bayesian computation demonstrated that the genetic diversity pattern of C. sclerophylla could be explained by geographic isolation followed by secondary contact. Ecological niche modelling showed that distribution of C. sclerophylla shrank southward at the Last Glacial Maximum and expanded northward at the Mid Holocene. These results suggested that the uplift of the Xuefeng, Luoxiao, and Wuyi mountain ranges and the interglacial–glacial climate change shaped the genetic diversity of C. sclerophylla. The Luoxiao mountain range should be considered as a key conservation unit of C. sclerophylla due to its higher level of genetic diversity. Our study supplies important information for prioritizing the conservation and sustainable utilization of C. sclerophylla, and provides insight on the dynamics of evergreen broad-leaved forests in subtropical China. A growing number of biological studies suggest that exogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) at a certain concentration may promote human resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the results of most relevant studies are inconsistent, and few studies have explored the relationship between SO2 exposure and tuberculosis risk at provincial level. In addition, occupational exposure has long been considered to have a certain impact on the human body, so for the first time, we discussed the differences between different occupations in the study on the relationship between air pollutant exposure and tuberculosis risk, and evaluated the impact of occupational exposure. This study aimed to explore the association between short-term SO2 exposure and the risk of outpatient visits to tuberculosis in Anhui province and 16 prefecture-level cities from 2015 to 2020. We used several models for multi-stage analysis, including distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM), Poisson generalized linear regression model, and random-effects model. The association was assessed using the 28-day cumulative lag effect RR and 95%CI for each 10-unit increase in SO2 concentration. We divided all patients into the following six occupations: Worker, Farmer, Retired people, Children and Students, Cadre and Office clerk, and Service staff (catering, business, etc.). Sex, age, and season were analyzed by subgroup. Finally, the robustness of the multi-pollutant model was tested. At provincial level, the overall effect value of SO2 was RR=0.8191 (95%CI: 07702~0.8712); after grouping all patients by occupation, the association found only among Farmers (RR = 0.7150, 95%CI: 0.6699–0.7632, lag 0–28 days) and Workers (RR = 0.8566, 95%CI: 0.7930–0.9930, lag 0–4 days) was still statistically significant. Estimates for individual cities and using random-effects models to estimate average associations showed that SO2 exposure was associated with a reduced risk of outpatient TB visits in 14 municipalities, which remained significant when aggregated (RR = 0.9030, 95%CI: 0.8730–0.9340). Analysis of patients grouped by occupation in each municipality showed that statistical significance was again observed only in the Farmer (RR = 0.8880, 95%CI: 0.8610–0.9160) and Worker (RR = 0.8250, 95%CI: 0.7290–0.9340) groups. Stratified analysis of age, sex, and season showed that the effect of SO2 exposure was greater for middle-aged people (18–64 years old) and males, and less for seasonal changes. In summary, we found that exposure to SO2 reduces the risk of outpatient visits to tuberculosis, with farmers and workers more susceptible to SO2. This paper introduces a method of combining phase space reconstruction and symbolic dynamics to study the causality between urbanization and economic growth at different regional levels in Shandong Province and finds that there is a strong positive relationship between urbanization and economic growth from China, indicating that the development of urbanization can drive the economic growth. Then, according to the results of correlation analysis between respective subvariables belonging to urbanization and economic growth and the principle of "deleting strong and reserving weak," the paper selects the independent variable and dependent variable to explore the hidden causal mechanisms that drive the developing of urbanization and economic growth from China. The results show that (1) the pattern causality between the independent variable and the dependent variable is dominated by dark causality at the provincial level; (2) the pattern causality between the independent variable and the dependent variable is dominated by dark causality at the Jinan economic circles and the Lunan economic circles, but the positive causality is dominated at the Jiaodong economic circles; (3) the types of causality between the same evaluation index and PU in different regions are different, and furthermore the degrees of positive, negative, and dark causality are different at two levels and three regions. The conclusion shows that although there is an obvious positive interaction between urbanization and economic growth, the influences of many factors are neither positive nor negative causality, but dark causality, which plays an important role in developing urbanization and economic growth. Fagaceae species are increasingly used as models to elucidate the process and mechanism of adaptation and speciation by integrating ecology, evolution and genomics. The genus Castanopsis belongs to the family Fagaceae and is mainly distributed across subtropical and tropical Asia. In the present study, we reported the first chromosome‐scale genome assembly of Castanopsis tibetana, a common species of evergreen broadleaved forests in subtropical China. The combination of Nanopore sequencing and Hi‐C technologies enabled a high‐quality genome assembly. The final assembled genome size of C. tibetana was 878.6 Mb (97.6% of the estimated genome size), consisting of 477 contigs with an N50 length of 3.3 Mb. The benchmarking universal single‐copy orthologue (BUSCO) assessment indicated a completeness of 93.0%. Hi‐C scaffolding generated 12 pseudochromosomes, representing 98.7% of the assembled genome. Subsequently, 40,937 protein‐coding genes were predicted and 90.04% of them were functionally annotated. More than 476.9 Mb of repetitive sequences (54.3% of the genome) were identified, and the percentage of the genome covered by TE elements was 39.98%. Comparative genomics analysis revealed that C. tibetana was most closely related to Castanea mollissima and diverged at 18.48 Ma, and that C. tibetana has undergone considerable gene family expansion and contraction. Evidence of positive selection was detected in 53 genes, which showed different arrangement pattern compared to Quercus robur. The chromosome‐scale genome assembly of C. tibetana will expand Fagaceae genome resources across the family and provide a powerful comparative framework to study the adaptation and evolution of Fagaceae trees. Despite pervasive evidence of more educated women having lower fertility, it remains unclear whether education reduces women's fertility. This study presents new evidence of the causal effect of women's education on fertility from China, where fertility has remained below the replacement level since the early 1990s. To account for endogeneity, the study exploits the timing and varying intensity of China's higher education expansion as exogenous sources of increase in women's education. Using data from China General Social Survey (2010–2012), findings show that each year of women's education induced by the higher education expansion increases the number of children ever born by 10%. According to the average marginal effects, each additional year of women's education increases the number of children ever born by 0.14, decreases the probability of having no children by 3 percentage points, and increases the probability of having two or more children by 4 percentage points. Two mechanisms drive the positive effect of education: first, education does not cause an increase in the mean age at first marriage; second, among ever-married women, education increases their demand for children. Over nearly three rainy seasons of lightning activity in North China, numerical prediction experiments were carried out using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with electrification and discharge schemes (WRF-Electric). The numerical forecast results were evaluated using the neighborhood-based equitable threat score (ETS) and fraction skill score (FSS) verification methods based on nationwide observational lightning data. An algorithm was used to generate the coverage of the total flash (intracloud and cloud-to-ground flashes) by fitting the cloud-to-ground flash data. The numerical results showed that the region of lightning activity could be well predicted by the mesoscale WRF-Electric model, particularly during a 6–12-hour forecasting period. The average ETS score of the 6–12-hour forecasting period was 0.34 for a 20 km neighborhood radius. The predictive skill of the model varied not only monthly but also diurnally. The model showed better forecasting skills during the main rainy season (June–July–August) and at 14 : 00–20 : 00 local time. The predictability of the model was enhanced with increasing thunderstorm scale. On the other hand, the coverage of predicted lightning activity was relatively concentrated, and the lightning flash density was higher than the observations. The main discrepancies in the model prediction were related to the design of the discharge parameterization. Thus, in discharge parameterization, the initial threshold for lightning should be modified according to the model resolution, while the magnitude of the neutralization charge in a single discharge should be referenced to the observational results. Purpose: Poor sleep quality is closed related with driving accidents. However, due to the lack of a valid instrument for assessing drivers' sleep quality, few studies have examined drivers' sleep quality and its associations with driving behaviours and traffic accidents in China. The aim of this paper is to revise the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) and assess its reliability and validity in Chinese drivers. Methods: 522 Chinese drivers aged from 18 to 56 years old agreed to complete the SQS, Daytime Sleepiness Perception Scale version 4 (DSPS-4), Self-report of Risky Driving Behavior (RD-SR) and Self-assessment of the Likelihood of Being Involved in a Risky Driving Situation (RD-SA). Results: The final Chinese version of the SQS contained 23 items across four factors: difficulty in getting up, difficulty in falling asleep, sleep recovery and daytime dysfunction. Second, man scored lower on the difficulty in falling asleep factor but higher on the sleep recovery factor than women. Third, low to moderate correlations were found between the SQS factors and the DSPS-4, RD-SA and RD-SR, indicating that the validity of the revised scale was satisfactory. More importantly, daytime dysfunction factor is an effective predictor of violation involvement and accident involvement. Objectives. To introduce a new implementation of radiomics analysis for cartilage and subchondral bone of the knee and to compare the performance of the proposed models to classic T2 relaxation time in distinguishing knees predisposed to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and healthy controls. Methods. 114 patients following ACLR after at least 2 years and 43 healthy controls were reviewed and allocated to training (n = 110) and testing (n = 47) cohorts. Radiomics models are built for cartilage and subchondral bone regions of different compartments: lateral femur (LF), lateral tibia (LT), medial femur (MF), and medial tibia (MT) and combined models of four compartments on T2 mapping images. The model performance of discrimination between patients and controls was illustrated with the receiver operating characteristic curve and compared with a classic T2 value-based model. Results. The T2 value model of cartilage yielded moderate predictive performance in discerning patients and controls, with an AUC of 0.731 (95% confidence interval, 0.556–0.875) in the testing cohort, while the radiomics signature of cartilage and subchondral bone of different compartments demonstrated excellent performance, with AUCs of 0.864–0.979. Furthermore, the combined model reported an even better performance, with AUCs of 0.977 (95% confidence interval, 0.919–1.000) for the cartilage and 0.934 (95% confidence interval, 0.865–0.994) for the subchondral bone in the testing cohort. Conclusion. The radiomics features of the cartilage and subchondral bone may be able to provide powerful tools with more sensitive detection than T2 values in differentiating knees at risk for PTOA after ACLR from healthy knees. BACKGROUND In China, hypertension prevalence is high and increasing while the control rate is low, especially in rural areas. Traditionally, village doctors play an important role in infectious disease control and delivering essential health services to rural residents. We aim to test the effectiveness of a village doctor-led multifaceted intervention compared with usual care on blood pressure (BP) control and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among rural residents with hypertension in China. METHODS In the China Rural Hypertension Control Project (CRHCP), a cluster randomized trial, 163 villages were randomly assigned to the village doctor-led intervention and 163 villages to control. A total of 33,995 individuals aged ≥40 years with an untreated BP ≥140/90 mm Hg or treated BP ≥130/80 mm Hg or with an untreated BP ≥130/80 mm Hg and a history of clinical CVD were recruited into the study. The village doctor-led multifaceted intervention is designed to overcome barriers at the healthcare system, provider, patient, and community levels. Village doctors receive training on standard BP measurement, protocol-based hypertension treatment, and health coaching. They also receive technical support and supervision from hypertension specialists/primary care physicians and performance-based financial incentives. Study participants receive health coaching on home BP monitoring, lifestyle changes, and adherence to medications. The primary outcome is BP control (<130/80 mm Hg) at 18 months in phase 1 and CVD events over 36 months in phase 2. CONCLUSIONS The CRHCP will provide critically important data on the effectiveness, implementation, and sustainability of a hypertension control strategy in rural China for reducing the BP-related CVD burden. Background: Cartilage degeneration is a common issue in patients with chronic lateral ankle instability. However, there are limited studies regarding the effectiveness of lateral ligament surgery on preventing talar and subtalar joint cartilage from further degenerative changes. Purpose: To longitudinally evaluate talar and subtalar cartilage compositional changes using magnetic resonance imaging T2* mapping in anatomic anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)–repaired and ATFL-reconstructed ankles and to compare them with measures in asymptomatic controls. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Between January 2015 and December 2016, patients with chronic lateral ankle instability who underwent anatomic ATFL repair (n = 19) and reconstruction (n = 20) were prospectively recruited. Patients underwent 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and 3-year follow-up. As asymptomatic controls, 21 healthy volunteers were recruited and underwent imaging at baseline. Talar dome cartilage was divided into (1) medial anterior, central, and posterior and (2) lateral anterior, central, and posterior. Posterior subtalar cartilage was divided into (1) central talus and calcaneus and (2) lateral talus and calcaneus. Ankle function was assessed using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scores. Results: There were significant increases in T2* values in medial and lateral posterior and central talus cartilage from baseline to 3-year follow-up in patients who underwent repair. T2* values were significantly higher in ATFL-repaired ankles at follow-up for all cartilage regions of interest, except medial and lateral anterior and lateral central, compared with those in healthy controls. From baseline to 3-year follow-up, ATFL-reconstructed ankles had a significant increase in T2* values in lateral central and posterior cartilage. T2* values in ATFL-reconstructed ankles at follow-up were elevated in all cartilage regions of interest, except medial and lateral anterior, compared with those in healthy controls. ATFL-repaired ankles showed a greater decrease of T2* values from baseline to follow-up in lateral calcaneus cartilage than did ATFL-reconstructed ankles (P =.031). No significant differences in American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society score were found between repair and reconstruction procedures (mean ± SD, 19.11 ± 7.45 vs 16.85 ± 6.24; P =.311). Conclusion: Neither anatomic ATFL repair nor reconstruction could prevent the progression of talar dome and posterior subtalar cartilage degeneration; however, ankle function and activity levels were not affected over a short period. A large body of research has examined the relationship between family size and child well-being in developing countries, but most of this literature has focused on the consequences of high fertility. The impact of family size in a low-fertility developing country context remains unknown, even though more developing countries are expected to reach below-replacement fertility levels. Set in China between 2010 and 2016, this study examines whether an increase in family size reduces parental investment received by the firstborn child. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study improves on previous research by using direct measures of parental investment, including monetary and nonmonetary investment, and distinguishing household-level from child-specific resources. It also exploits the longitudinal nature of the CFPS to mediate the bias arising from the joint determination of family size and parental investment. Results show that having a younger sibling significantly reduces the average household expenditure per capita. It also directly reduces parental investment received by the firstborn child, with two exceptions: (1) for firstborn boys, having a younger sister does not pose any competition; and (2) for firstborn children whose mothers have completed primary education or more, having a younger brother does not reduce parental educational aspirations for them. Findings from this study provide the first glimpse into how children fare as China transitions to a universal two-child policy regime but have wider implications beyond the Chinese context. Aim: The development process of self‐acceptance in breast cancer survivors is a dynamic process that is poorly understood. The objective of the present study was to explore and delineate the dynamic progression toward self‐acceptance in Chinese women with breast cancer. Methods: Data were collected through individual in‐depth face‐to‐face interviews with 20 women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer at the breast center in a large tertiary care hospital in Ningbo, China between September 2016 and June 2017. Data analysis occurred through the open, axial, and selective coding stages of grounded theory and used the constant comparative method. Results: Based on the interviewer responses, one core category, three categories, and seven subcategories were identified that pertained to the process of self‐acceptance in Chinese women with breast cancer. The core category of self‐acceptance was normalization, returning to the pre‐illness state with an identity and image that conformed to the cultural norm. To reach normalization, women progressed through a crisis stage, a compromise stage, and a managing impressions stage. Conclusion: This study proposes that self‐acceptance in breast cancer survivors is a dynamic and active process. Background: The specialist critical care nurse plays a vital role in the delivery of evidence‐based practice, and specific competency guidance has been established to facilitate critical care nursing practice and education development in many developed countries. However, no research has been conducted to develop a competency framework for specialist critical care nurses in China. Aims and objectives: To construct a competency framework specific to specialist critical care nurses in China. Design and methods: A two‐phased procedure was implemented. In phase 1, a literature review and four focus groups were used to develop the initial competency framework, which consisted of 101 statements. During phase 2, three rounds of a modified Delphi process were conducted and involved a national panel of 30 experts, including physicians, specialist critical care nurses, managers, and educators, who responded to the survey using a 5‐point Likert‐type scale to indicate their level of agreement with the competency framework. A 75% threshold for each competency was used to achieve panel consensus. Results: Experts in the field of critical care responded to rounds 1 (n = 29), 2 (n = 28), and 3 (n = 28). Seventy‐eight competencies were agreed upon after round 1, increasing to 88 after round 2 and 92 after round 3. The final competency framework was classified into six domains: evidence‐based practice, complex decisions, professionalism, communication and co‐operation, education and development, and leadership. Conclusion: The output of this study is an expert consensus competency framework that provides a sound foundation for the assessment and training of specialist critical care nurses. Relevance to clinical practice: The proposed competency framework should be used to assess nursing performance, promote continuing professional development, and further improve the delivery of quality health care and optimal patient outcomes. Background: The aim of this study was to examine the association between childhood socioeconomic status (SES) and edentulism. Methods: The edentulous status of Chinese in mid-late adulthood was determined using self-reported lost all of teeth from the Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Childhood SES was determined based on the following parameters: the education, occupation and working status of the parents; financial situation of the family; relationship with the parents; care, love and affection from the mother; quarrels and fights between parents; primary residence; neighbors' willingness to help and with close-knit relationships. Adulthood SES was assessed by educational achievements. This study used principal component analysis (PCA) to select variables and binary logistic regression models to determine the association between childhood SES and edentulism. Results: Data were available from a total of 17,713 respondents, 984 of whom were edentulous (2.9%). The prevalence of edentulism in mid- to late-age Chinese individuals was higher in those with poor childhood SES. In final regression model, edentulism was significantly associated with willingness of neighbors to help with close-knit relationships (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.79–0.99), parents with high school education or above (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.01–1.39) and drinking and smoking habits of the father (OR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.97–1.24). Conclusion: Childhood SES was significantly associated with the prevalence of edentulism in mid- to late-age Chinese individuals. In particular, parents with high school education or above, unwillingness of neighbor to help with close-knit relationships, drinking and smoking habits of the father independent of adulthood SES were significantly associated with edentulism. Accordingly, the development of optimal recommendations and more effective intervention strategies requires considering the experiences in early life associated with poor SES contributes to poor oral health. Private supplementary tutoring (PT) is practiced worldwide to improve students' academic performance and is highly prevalent in East Asia. However, studies have not clearly defined the effectiveness of PT. This study examined student-report questionnaires and school reports of mathematics achievements from approximately 2000 secondary school students to track retrospective longitudinal variations of PT over a year and analysed the differential effectiveness of regular mathematics PT participation on mathematics achievement at four hierarchical cognitive levels. Based on a sub-sample of students who regularly took PT in three consecutive periods (n = 773) as well as students who did not take PT (N = 758), the results indicated that the effect size of PT effectiveness decreased from low to high cognitive levels (from positive to negative). These results raise questions concerning the role of PT. Background: Despite current interest in the unfavorable impact of cardiometabolic index (CMI) and lipid accumulation product (LAP) on diabetes and cardiovascular risk, information regarding the relation of CMI and LAP to left ventricular (LV) geometry has not been specifically addressed. We aimed to examine the hypothesis: (1) CMI and LAP represent an independent determinant of LV remodeling in general population of rural China; (2) there are gender differences in obesity-related alterations in terms of LV morphology.Methods: The sample for this cross-sectional analysis included 11,258 participants (mean age 53.9 years; 54.0% females) who underwent assessment of basic metabolic and anthropometric parameters in rural areas of northeast China. Comprehensive echocardiography-defined LV geometric pattern was determined according to left ventricular mass index and relative wall thickness.Results: The prevalence rate of eccentric and concentric LV hypertrophy (LVH) presented a proportional increase with elevated quartiles of CMI and LAP in a dose-response manner (all P < 0.005). When CMI and LAP were entered as a continuous variable in multivariable adjusted model, we observed the independent effect of 1 SD increment in CMI and LAP with the probability of eccentric and concentric LVH, while this relationship was more pronounced in females than in males. Likewise, the odds ratio comparing the top versus bottom quartiles of CMI were 2.105 (95%CI:1.600-2.768) for eccentric LVH and 2.236 (95%CI:1.419-3.522) for concentric LVH in females. Males in the highest CMI quartile exhibited a nearly doubled (OR:1.724, 95%CI:1.287-2.311) and 1.523-fold (95%CI:1.003-2.313) greater risk of eccentric and concentric LVH, respectively. Increasing LAP entailed a higher possibility of eccentric LVH by a factor of 3.552 and 1.768 in females and males, respectively. In contrast to females, where LAP fourth quartile and concentric LVH were positively associated (OR:2.544, 95%CI:1.537-4.209), higher LAP did not correlate with concentric LVH in males (OR:1.234, 95%CI:0.824-1.849).Conclusions: CMI and LAP give rise to a new paradigm of accounting for gender difference in obesity-related abnormal LV geometry, an effect that was substantially greater in females. We propose stochastic convex semidefinite programs (SCSDPs) to handle uncertain data in applications. For these models, we design an efficient inexact stochastic approximation (SA) method and prove the convergence, complexity, and robust treatment of the algorithm. We apply the inexact method for solving SCSDPs where the subproblem in each iteration is only solved approximately and show that it enjoys the similar iteration complexity as the exact counterpart if the subproblems are progressively solved to sufficient accuracy. Background: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of hypertension with or without diabetes on left ventricular (LV) remodeling in rural Chinese population.Methods: A total of 10,270 participants were classified into control group, hypertension without diabetes (HT) group, and hypertension with diabetes (HT + DM) group. We compared clinical characteristics and echocardiographic parameters, and used multivariable logistic regression analysis to assess the associations of interest.Results: HT + DM group had higher interventricular septal thickness (IVSd), posterior wall thickness (PWTd), left ventricular mass (LVM), LVM index (LVMI), relative wall thickness (RWT), left atrial diameter (LAD), A wave and lower E wave than HT group (all P < 0.05). The prevalence rates of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and abnormal geometry were statistically different among three groups (P < 0.001) and eccentric hypertrophy was the highest proportion of geometry abnormality. Logistic regression analysis suggested that subjects in HT and HT + DM groups had odds ratio (OR) values of 2.81, 4.41, 2.24 and 3.94, 7.20, 2.38 for LVH, concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy in the total population, respectively, compared to control group. When compared with HT group, those in HT + DM group had approximately 1.40-, 1.61- and 1.38-, 1.71-fold increased risk for LVH and concentric hypertrophy in the total and female population separately, but no association of HT + DM with LVH and abnormal geometrical patterns was found in men.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that, to varying degrees, hypertension was associated with LV remodeling in rural Chinese population, and this risk association was obviously increased for LVH and concentric hypertrophy when accompanied by diabetes, especially for women. Objectives: Hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) is a known cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor. Observational studies had supported the role of lifestyle factors such as physical activity, diet and alcohol consumption in CVD prevention. Our study aimed to determine the relationship between Hhcy and lifestyle factors in general Chinese population.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 7135 adults (3320 men and 3815 women) aged 35 years or older were recruited from the rural Northeast China. Data on lifestyle factors, such as physical activities, sleep duration, current smoking and drinking status, dietary habits and familial factors were collected in interviews and laboratory examinations were performed by well-trained personnel.Results: Plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) level was higher in men than in women, and greater in the elderly than in other age groups. Subjects with Hhcy were more likely to be current smokers (men: OR 1.328, 95% CI 1.143-1.543, p<0.001; women: OR 1.465, 95% CI 1.214-1.767, p<0.001). Separately, men with Hhcy were more likely to have an education of primary school or below (OR 1.251, 95% CI 1.068-1.465, p=0.006) and less likely to eat more vegetables (OR 0.927, 95% CI 0.863-0.996, p=0.037) than the normal-tHcy participants. In women, participants with Hhcy were more likely to have longer sleeping time (>9h/d) (OR 1.677, 95% CI 1.292-2.177, p<0.001), low physical activity (OR 1.721, 95% CI 1.197-2.475, p=0.044) and increased diet score (OR 1.126, 95% CI 1.007-1.259, p=0.037) and less likely to be current drinkers (OR 0.488, 95% CI 0.297-0.802, p=0.005) than the normal-tHcy participants.Conclusion: Our study revealed that physical activity and current drinking status were not significantly associated with Hhcy in males, but inversely associated in females. In both genders, current smoking status and dietary habits were significantly associated with Hhcy. Objective. To compare T2⁎ value of healthy and diseased Achilles tendons (AT) with a recently introduced three-dimensional ultrashort echo time (3D-UTE) sequence and analyze the correlation between T2⁎ value and clinical scores. Methods. Ten patients with symptomatic Achilles tendon and ten healthy volunteers were investigated with 3D-UTE sequence on a 3T magnetic resonance (MR) scanner. T2⁎ values of four regions in Achilles tendons were calculated. The clinical outcomes of patients were evaluated according to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and Achilles Tendon Rupture Score (ATRS). An independent sample t-test was used to compare the differences of T2⁎ value and clinical scores between two groups. The Pearson correlation coefficient between clinical scores and T2⁎ values was assessed. Results. The T2⁎ values of Achilles tendon were statistically significantly different between patients and volunteers. The Pearson correlation coefficients between T2⁎ and AOFAS or ATRS scores of patients were r=-0.733 and r=-0.634, respectively. Conclusion. The variability of T2⁎ in healthy and pathologic AT can be quantified by UTE-T2⁎. T2⁎ may be a promising marker to detect and diagnose AT tendinopathy. Objective To ascertain whether sleep abnormalities including daytime sleepiness, snoring, apnea, sleep disruption and sleep duration abnormity are significantly associated with hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy). Methods A total of 5992 participants were involved in the cross-sectional study. Sleep abnormalities were evaluated by a structured questionnaire. Hhcy was defined as plasma levels of homocysteine ≥ 15 μm/L. Results After adjustment for age, gender, education, current smoking status and current drinking status, daytime sleepiness (OR, 1.597; 95%CI, 1.210–2.110, P = 0.001), sleep duration < 6 h (OR, 1.273; 95%CI, 1.063–1.524, P = 0.009) and sleep duration > 8 h (OR, 1.205; 95%CI, 1.065–1.364, P = 0.003) were significantly associated with Hhcy. While snoring (OR, 1.065; 95%CI, 0.950–1.195, P = 0.279), apnea (OR, 1.170; 95%CI, 0.924–1.482, P = 0.193), and sleep disruption (OR, 1.065; 95%CI, 0.852–1.331, P = 0.580) were not. After further adjustment for body mass index, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, total cholesterol, physical activity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, depression, glomerular filtration rate, hypertension and hyperuricemia, still the increased OR could be found in the daytime sleepiness group (OR, 1.569; 95%CI, 1.145–2.150, P = 0.005). However, sleep duration < 6 h (OR, 1.067; 95%CI, 0.788–1.445, P = 0.676) and sleep duration > 8 h groups (OR, 1.080; 95%CI, 0.883–1.320, P = 0.453) were no longer significantly associated with Hhcy. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in Chinese type 2 diabetic patients and identify contributing risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in rural areas of China, and 1,198 type 2 diabetic patients with complete data were recruited. Elevated ALT and AST levels were defined as >40 U/L. Prevalence of abnormal liver enzymes was analyzed and multivariable analysis was used to identify independent risk factors. Results: 10.3% and 6.1% diabetic patients had elevated ALT and elevated AST, respectively. The prevalence of elevated liver enzymes was gender-related; it was 13.8% in men and 7.5% in women for elevated ALT, and 7.4% in men and 3.1% in women for elevated AST. High triglyceride was positively associated with both elevated ALT (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.08–3.01, p = 0.024) and elevated AST (OR 2.24, 95%CI 1.08–4.65, p = 0.031), while taking anti-diabetes medicine was inversely related to both elevated ALT (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.29–0.80, p = 0.005) and elevated AST (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.17–0.82, p = 0.014). The risk of elevated ALT in diabetic patients increased with the presence of obesity (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.07–6.01, p = 0.034), and was lower in women (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.19–0.72, p = 0.003). Hypertension (OR 4.33, 95% CI 1.41–13.30, p = 0.011), current drinking status (OR 2.90, 95% CI 1.21–6.96, p = 0.017) and national minority (OR 3.26, 95%CI 1.31–8.12, p = 0.011) were risk factors for elevated AST. Conclusion: A relatively high prevalence of abnormal serum liver enzymes in diabetic patients was demonstrated in China, especially in males. Background: Studies regarding the association between prehypertension and the structual changes of left heart are scanty. However, which type of the geometrical change of left heart is predominated one in prehypertension and hypertension is controversial. It is therefore important to investigate geometrical and functional changes of left heart in adults with prehypertension and hypertension because of their prognostic significance.Methods: The study was based on a cross-sectional design, a total of 10547 participants were classified into normotension group, prehypertension group and hypertension group. We analyzed clinical characteristics, echocardiographic parameters and distribution of left ventricular (LV) geometrical patterns in different groups.Results: Participants with prehypertension had higher values of most of echocardiographic parameters than those with normotension. The prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH) was statistically different among three groups (P <0.001), and the rates of LVH in the three groups were 5.9, 8.6, 28.4 % by indexation to height(2.7) and 4.9, 5.3, 19.3 % by indexation to BSA, respectively. The prevalence rates of eccentric hypertrophy, concentric remodeling and concentric hypertrophy were 7.3 %, 5.3 % and 1.4 % in prehypertension group, and 17.8 %, 8.8 % and 10.6 % in hypertension group. Logistic regression analysis showed that systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean artery pressure (MAP) were all independent risk factors for left cardiac structural changes, and pulse pressure (PP) was independent risk factor for concentric and eccentric hypertrophy. Among four indices, DBP levels with OR values of 1.192, 1.759 and 1.278 were the strongest indicator for concentric remodeling, concentric hypertrophy and eccentric hypertrophy, respectively (P <0.001).Conclusions: There exists LV geometrical change in adults with prehypertension and hypertension in rural Chinese population, and the eccentric hypertrophy was the highest proportion of geometric alterations. In this paper, we implement three scales of fracture integrated prediction study by classifying it to macro- (> 1/4 λ), meso- (> 1/100 λ and < 1/4 λ) and micro- (< 1/100 λ) scales. Based on the multi-scales rock physics modelling technique, the seismic azimuthal anisotropy characteristic is analyzed for distinguishing the fractures of meso-scale. Furthermore, by integrating geological core fracture description, image well-logging fracture interpretation, seismic attributes macro-scale fracture prediction and core slice micro-scale fracture characterization, an comprehensive multi-scale fracture prediction methodology and technique workflow are proposed by using geology, well-logging and seismic multi-attributes. Firstly, utilizing the geology core slice observation (Fractures description) and image well-logging data interpretation results, the main governing factors of fracture development are obtained, and then the control factors of the development of regional macro-scale fractures are carried out via modelling of the tectonic stress field. For the meso-scale fracture description, the poststack geometric attributes are used to describe the macro-scale fracture as well, the prestack attenuation seismic attribute is used to predict the meso-scale fracture. Finally, by combining lithological statistic inversion with superposed results of faults, the relationship of the meso-scale fractures, lithology and faults can be reasonably interpreted and the cause of meso-scale fractures can be verified. The micro-scale fracture description is mainly implemented by using the electron microscope scanning of cores. Therefore, the development of fractures in reservoirs is assessed by valuating three classes of fracture prediction results. An integrated fracture prediction application to a real field in Sichuan basin, where limestone reservoir fractures developed, is implemented. The application results in the study area indicates that the proposed multi-scales integrated fracture prediction method and the technique procedureare able to deal with the strong heterogeneity and multi-scales problems in fracture prediction. Moreover, the multi-scale fracture prediction technique integrated with geology, well-logging and seismic multi-information can help improve the reservoir characterization and sweet-spots prediction for the fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs. Rapid urbanization has generated great pressure on natural resources. This research paper illustrates the utility of linking socioeconomic and remotely sensed imagery in order to investigate the interaction between ecological and socioeconomic processes within the context of urban growth. The approach focuses on the vegetation degradation index (VDI) developed from time series SPOT-VGT NDVI, the normalized difference vegetation index based on vegetation data provided by the vegetation sensor onboard the SPOT satellites. The VDI value of each square kilometer pixel has been calculated to depict spatial pattern of vegetation degradation, which are then aggregated into the city level. In terms of urbanization, 13 factors have been chosen and valued from statistics books and vector digital maps.With the sample set of 50 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region of China, spearman correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis have been adopted to investigate the causal relationships between urbanization and vegetation degradation. The findings are as follows: First, three hot-spot areas in vegetation degradation have been identified, which are spatially correlated with urban land expansion. The composite index of VDI has been manifested as an effective tool for assessing vegetation degradation. Second, economic and demographic variables, rather than the urban land expansion variables, have been verified to be the determinant factors for vegetation degradation. The rise of GDP growth rate, population growth or GDP per capita has significantly deepened regional vegetation degradation. Third and finally, the distinctively local findings that incomplete urbanization and idling cropland have probably increased vegetation degradation rates are worth noting. Although further studies are required for probing into detailed mechanisms and universality, the specific findings may provide a reference to similar studies, and should be quite useful for policy makers. Background: Associated meniscal injury is well recognized at anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and it is a known risk factor for osteoarthritis. Purpose: To evaluate and characterize the postoperative appearance of articular cartilage after different meniscal treatment inACL-reconstructed knees using T2 relaxation time evaluation on MRI.Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 62 consecutive patients who under ACL reconstruction were recruited in this study, including 23 patients undergoing partial meniscectomy (MS group), 21 patients undergoing meniscal repair (MR group), and 18 patients with intact menisci (MI group) at time of surgery. Clinical evaluation, including subjective functional scores and physical examination, was performed on the same day as the MRI examination and at follow-up times ranging from 2 to 4.2 years. The MRI multiecho sagittal images were segmented to determine the T2 relaxation time value of each meniscus and articular cartilage plate. Differences ineach measurement were compared among groups. Results: No patient had joint-line tenderness or reported pain or clicking on McMurray test or instability. There were also no statistically significant differences in functional scores or medial or lateral meniscus T2 values among the 3 groups (P > .05 for both). There was a significantly higher articular cartilage T2 value in the medial femorotibial articular cartilage for the MS group (P < .01) and the MR group (P < .05) compared with that of the MI group, while there was no significant difference in articular cartilage T2 value between the MS and MR groups (P > .05) in each articular cartilage plate. The medial tibial articular cartilage T2 value had a significant positive correlation with medial meniscus T2 value (r = 0.287; P = .024) Conclusion: This study demonstrates that knees with meniscectomy or meniscal repair had articular cartilage degeneration at 2 to 4 years postoperatively, with higher articular cartilage T2 relaxation time values compared with the knees with an intact meniscus. In the context of China's increasing rural-urban migration, few studies have investigated how parental migration affects children's experience in school. The high cost of schooling, taken together with the institutional barriers in destination cities, have compelled many rural parents in China to migrate without their children, leaving them in the care of their spouses, grandparents, relatives or other caregivers. Still other parents migrate with their children, many of whom then attend urban migrant schools in their destination city. Understanding the academic engagement of children of migrant workers is particularly salient because the poor qualities of migrant schools, a lack of parental support, and exposure to competing alternatives to schooling may render both migrant children in the cities and left-behind children in the rural villages vulnerable to disengagement, and ultimately school dropout. Using data collected in 2008 in the urban Haidian and Changping districts of Beijing and rural Henan and Shaanxi provinces, the authors of this paper investigate the association between parental migration status and two measures of academic engagement, academic aspirations and the odds of liking school, by comparing migrant children attending migrant schools and left-behind children with their rural counterparts who do not have migrant parents. The authors' findings show that migrant children attending migrant schools have lower academic engagement compared to rural children of non-migrant parents. The correlation between academic engagement and parental migration status can be accounted for in part by the support children receive from family and teachers. The association between certain measures of family and school support and academic engagement also varies by parental migration status: for example, high teacher turnover rates significantly reduce migrant children's odds of liking schools, but do not affect children of non-migrant parents. Purpose: To explore the prevalence and clinical features, especially the reproductive function, of 45,X mosaicism patients in northeast China. Methods: GTG-banding was performed on a series of 2,250 patients from our genetic counseling clinic. Each of these patients underwent a physical examination and was interviewed about their medical history and reproductive problems. Literature on 45,X mosaicism was accessed using PubMed and reviewed. Results: The prevalence of 45,X mosaicism in northeast China is 0.36 % (8/2250), and the mosaic karyotype of our study accounted for 61.54 % (8/13) of Turner syndrome cases. This is comparable with studies from Asia, Europe, South America and other regions. The affected patients showed genital abnormalities, abnormal pregnancy or infertility. Conclusion: 45,X mosaicism is commonly seen in the genetic counseling clinic. Extensive cytogenetic assessment may improve the detection rate in patients with congenital dysplasia, or history of abnormal pregnancy or infertility. The relationship between conscientiousness and job performance has been found to be nonlinear in the West, which challenges conceptually and empirically the traditional assumption of the single linear relationship. In this research, we examined the nonlinear effects of conscientiousness on both overall job performance and performance dimensions (i.e., task performance, adaptive performance and contextual performance) in the Chinese context. The results of our two studies supported some evidence for the nonlinear effect of conscientiousness on overall job performance. In addition, it was found that conscientiousness has different (linear or nonlinear) effects on performance dimensions. These findings suggest that the nonlinear effects of conscientiousness on job performance deserve further investigation, and a distinction should be made with regard to job performance in personnel evaluation. It is a case study of how the field of higher education research emerged and was co-constructed by the state and the academic community of higher education researchers to become an established and recognised discipline in a national context. Background: Currently, there is an ongoing debate regarding the optimal graft choice between autograft and allograft tendons in reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It has been reported that allograft tendons have a slower onset and rate of revascularization compared with autograft tendons. Hypothesis: Allograft tendons might have inferior graft maturity compared with autograft tendons in ACL reconstruction at 2 years postoperatively. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A total of 52 participants with ACL reconstruction were recruited in this study, including 30 using allograft tendons and 22 using autograft tendons. All of them had unilateral ACL reconstruction and were followed up using 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at least 2 years postoperatively. Clinical examination was performed on the same day when the MRI examination was performed, including subjective functional examinations (International Knee Documentation Committee [IKDC] and Tegner Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale [TLKS]) and physical examinations (anterior drawer test and Lachman test). Four measurements based on MRI were focused on graft orientation (including tibial tunnel position and graft angles), the edematous condition of the graft, intra-articular graft width at different sites, and signal intensity of the ACL graft using the signal/noise quotient (SNQ) from a region of interest analysis. Differences in each measurement were compared between the allograft group and the autograft group. Results:All the participants returned to normal sports activities at the follow-up time point, as all of them acquired full functional strength and stability. There was no significant difference between the autograft and the allograft group with respect to IKDC or TLKS score. The knees in both of the groups were confirmed stable by physical examination before MRI. On MRI measurements, the allograft group displayed no significant difference in graft orientation compared with the autograft group (P > .05). Moreover, there was also no significant difference between allograft group and autograft group in graft width of the distal site (P > .05), middle site (P > .05), and proximal site (P > .05). However, the mean SNQ value of the allograft group was significantly higher than that of the autograft group in the distal site (6.54 ± 6.58 vs 2.98 ± 5.48; P = .0173), the middle site (7.21 ± 6.31 vs 3.56 ± 4.62; P = .0149), and the proximal site (6.61 ± 8.08 vs 2.45 ± 8.12; P = .0018). Conclusion: The allograft group had a significantly higher SNQ value compared with the autograft group in this study, indicating that allograft tendons might have inferior graft maturity than autograft tendons in ACL reconstruction at 2 years postoperatively. As China has appeared only recently as an important knowledge producer with growing global economic significance, little is known internationally about how these processes develop and are managed within China. The rapidly expanding Chinese higher education system is playing an increasingly important role in China’s knowledge economy and therefore in the global knowledge society. This paper reviews historically the changing role of Chinese universities from the planned economy to the knowledge economy, analyses their contribution of knowledge and knowledge workers, and critically reflects on the mechanisms driving or confining their future contribution to the knowledge economy. The present study is aimed at examining implicit and explicit attitudes toward persons with disabilities among Chinese college students. The Implicit Association Test was used to measure their implicit attitudes, whereas their explicit attitudes toward persons with disabilities were measured by using a scale of three items. Participants were 56 randomly recruited undergraduate students at a university in Beijing. The results showed that implicit and explicit attitudes were antagonistic to each other. Students tended to hold negative attitudes implicitly and positive attitudes explicitly toward persons with disabilities. In particular, students from rural areas exhibited more negative implicit attitudes than those from urban areas; males demonstrated more negative explicit attitudes than females. Abstract: Although the importance of material wealth to population growth is the core of Malthusian theory about population dynamics in pre-transitional societies, our understanding of the relationship between wealth and reproductive success in China is still limited. Until recently, there was little in the way of relevant data. In the absence of empirical evidence to the contrary, conceptions of the Chinese demographic regime were largely Malthusian, in that they did not account for the possible role of a fertility-based preventive check. In this study, we examine wealth differentials in reproduction in historical rural China by using newly available longitudinal individual level demographic and household level land holding data for 108,100 immigrants and their descendants living in 120 villages in Shuangcheng, Northeast China, between 1866 and 1907. Our study demonstrates a positive correlation between land holding status and marital fertility among the population under study. In addition, there is also a clear pattern of fertility differentials according to household context and other measures of socioeconomic status. Our findings suggest that these fertility differentials are not only results of certain social institutions and customs but also the consequences of couple''s behavior of fertility control in response to socioeconomic and other household conditions.
