Plant and root fungal interactions are among the most important belowground ecological interactions, however, the mechanisms underlying pairwise interactions and network patterns of rhizosphere fungi and host plants remain unknown. We tested whether neutral process or spatial constraints individually or jointly best explained quantitative plant–ectomycorrhizal fungal network assembly in a subtropical forest in southern China. Results showed that the observed plant–ectomycorrhizal fungal network had low connectivity, high interaction evenness, and an intermediate level of specialization, with nestedness and modularity both greater than random expectation. Incorporating information on the relative abundance and spatial overlap of plants and fungi well predicted network nestedness and connectance, but not necessarily explained other network metrics such as specificity. Spatial overlap better predicted pairwise species interactions of plants and ectomycorrhizal fungi than species abundance or a combination of species abundance and spatial overlap. There was a significant phylogenetic signal on species degree and interaction strength for ectomycorrhizal fungal but not for plant species. Our study suggests that neutral processes (species abundance matching) and niche/dispersal-related processes (implied by spatial overlap and phylogeny) jointly drive the shaping of a plant-ectomycorrhizal fungal network. Abstract: A new isocoumarin, 7-hydroxyl-4-methyl isocoumarine (1), together with three known monoterpenes, (3R, 4R, 6S)-3, 6-dihydroxy-1-menthene (2), (+)-(1R, 3S, 4R, 6S)-6-hydroxymenthol (3) and 4-isopropyl-1-methylcyclohex-2-ene-1, 6-diol (4), was isolated from the methanol extract of Brickellia rosmarinifolia. The structures were determined by spectroscopic means. Compounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 showed antifungal activities against Colletotrichum musae and Peronophythora litchii in vitro. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background and Objectives: Recent studies have suggested that plasma soluble dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (sDPP4) have important physiologic effects, which may influence the prognosis of ischemic stroke. Our study aimed to examine the relationship between plasma sDDP4 levels and long-term clinical outcomes among patients with acute ischemic stroke., Methods: Secondary analysis was conducted among 3,564 participants (2,270 men and 1,294 women) from the China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischemic Stroke with baseline measurement of plasma sDPP4 levels. We evaluated the associations between plasma sDPP4 levels and 2-year clinical outcomes using logistic regression and Cox regression models. We further investigated the predictive utility of sDPP4 by calculating net reclassification index and integrated discrimination improvement., Results: The highest plasma sDPP4 quartile was associated with lower risk of cardiovascular events (hazard ratio [HR] 0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.45-0.87), recurrent stroke (HR 0.70, 95% CI 0.49-0.99), all-cause mortality (HR 0.62, 95% CI 0.44-0.87), stroke-specific mortality (HR 0.65, 95% CI 0.44-0.94), and poor functional outcomes (odds ratio 0.66, 95% CI 0.53-0.82) at 2 years compared with the lowest sDPP4 category in multivariable models. The addition of plasma sDPP4 to conventional risk factors model significantly improved risk prediction of all outcomes., Discussion: In this study, we found that higher plasma sDPP4 levels in patients with acute ischemic stroke were associated with decreased risks of cardiovascular events, recurrent stroke, all-cause mortality, and poor functional outcomes after ischemic stroke. Background and Aims: Prior studies have shown an association between positive urinary protein and an elevated risk of long-term mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS); however, data on the short-term prognostic significance of urinary protein and urinary ketone bodies in patients with AIS is sparse., Methods and Results: A total of 2842 AIS patients enrolled from December 2013 to May 2014 across 22 hospitals in Suzhou city were included. Patients were divided into urinary protein positive and negative, urinary ketone bodies positive and negative by urine dipstick. Cox and logistic regression models were used to estimate the effect of urinary protein and urinary ketone bodies on all cause in-hospital mortality and poor outcome upon discharge (modified Rankin Scale score ≥3) in AIS patients. Patients with positive urinary protein was associated with a 2.74-fold and 1.62-fold increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality (adjusted HR 2.74; 95% CI, 1.54-4.89; P-value = 0.001) and poor outcome upon discharge (aOR, 1.62; 95% CI 1.26-2.08; P-value <0.001) in comparison to negative urinary protein after adjusting for potential covariates. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing guidelines have compelled stroke practices worldwide to reshape their delivery of care significantly. We aimed to illustrate how the stroke services were interrupted during the pandemic in China., Methods: A 61-item questionnaire designed on Wenjuanxing Form was completed by doctors or nurses who were involved in treating patients with stroke from 1 February to 31 March 2020., Results: A total of 415 respondents completed the online survey after informed consent was obtained. Of the respondents, 37.8%, 35.2% and 27.0% were from mild, moderate and severe epidemic areas, respectively. Overall, the proportion of severe impact (reduction >50%) on the admission of transient ischaemic stroke, acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) and intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) was 45.0%, 32.0% and 27.5%, respectively. Those numbers were 36.9%, 27.9% and 22.3%; 36.5%, 22.1% and 22.6%; and 66.4%, 47.5% and 41.1% in mild, moderate and severe epidemic areas, respectively (all p<0.0001). For AIS, thrombolysis was moderate (20%-50% reduction) or severely impacted (>50%), as reported by 54.4% of the respondents, while thrombectomy was 39.3%. These were 44.4%, 26.3%; 44.2%, 39.4%; and 78.2%, 56.5%, in mild, moderate and severe epidemic areas, respectively (all p<0.0001). For patients with acute ICH, 39.8% reported the impact was severe or moderate for those eligible for surgery who had surgery. Those numbers were 27.4%, 39.0% and 58.1% in mild, moderate and severe epidemic areas, respectively. For staff resources, about 20% (overall) to 55% (severe epidemic) of the respondents reported moderate or severe impact on the on-duty doctors and nurses., Conclusion: We found a significant reduction of admission for all types of patients with stroke during the pandemic. Patients were less likely to receive appropriate care, for example, thrombolysis/thrombectomy, after being admitted to the hospital. Background: Pre-hospital delay was a critical factor affecting stroke patients receiving intravenous thrombolytic therapy. The aim of this study was to explore the factors associated with pre-hospital delay and thrombolysis in China., Methods: Patient data were obtained from emergency department (ED), and the factors of patient pre-hospital delay were recorded through a well-designed form., Results: A total of 630 patients were eventually included in the study. 317 patients were admitted to the ED during the thrombolysis time window, and only 105 patients received intravenous thrombolytic therapy. In the univariate analysis, transportation (OR: 0.15; 95% CI: 0.44 - 0.518; p = 0.001), atrial fibrillation (OR: 0.555; 95% CI: 0.372-0.828; p = 0.004) and response of symptoms (OR: 0.002; 95% CI: 0.000-0.013; p = 0.000) were associated with early arrival. Speech disturbances (OR: 2.095; 95% CI: 1.294-3.391; p = 0.002), smoking (OR: 2.563; 95% CI: 1.527-4.304; p = 0.000), alcohol consumption (OR: 2.155; 95% CI: 1.159-4.005; p = 0.014) and referral presentation (OR: 2.837; 95% CI: 1.584-5.082; p = 0.000) were associated with thrombolysis. In the logistic regression analysis, direct visiting to the hospital after onset and rushing to emergency after onset were independent predictor of early arrival of AIS and intravenous thrombolytic., Conclusions: The pre-hospital delay of acute ischemic stroke in China was still serious. Background: In this study, we developed novel logistic regression models for the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of ischemic stroke., Methods: A total of 288 ischemic stroke patients and 300 controls admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were included in the testing group. Two validation groups from The Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University and The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were included to assess our novel assessment models., Results: Results from the testing group indicated that the diagnostic assessment model for ischemic stroke prediction was: Logit(P) = 437.116 - 87.329 (Hypertension) - 89.700 (Smoking history) - 87.427 (Family history of ischemic stroke) - .090 (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]) - 1.984 (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]) - 17.005 (Lp(a)) - 15.486 (Apo A/Apo B), and the final prognostic assessment model of ischemic stroke was: Logit(P) = 458.437-92.343 (Hypertension) - 89.763 (Smoking history) + .251 (NLR) - .088 (HDL-C) - 1.994 (LDL-C) - 2.883 (hs-CRP) - .058 (IL-6) - 6.356 (TNF-α) - 16.485 (Lp(a)) - 17.658 (Apo A/Apo B). In the validation groups, our novel diagnostic assessment model showed good identification (with 87.5% sensitivity and 84.2% specificity in The Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University, with 85.5% sensitivity and 89.0% specificity in The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University). Moreover, our novel prognostic assessment model has a high value in identifying poor prognosis patients in the validation groups from The Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University (χ 2  = 8.461, P = .004), and The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University (χ 2  = 7.844, P = .005)., Conclusions: The diagnostic and prognostic assessment models we have established are of great value in the diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of ischemic stroke., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Evidence about whether neutrophil counts, neutrophil ratio linked with clinical outcome in patients with minor stroke after thrombolysis is scarce. The purpose of this study is to explore the association of neutrophil counts, neutrophil ratio with the 90-day clinical outcome in patients with minor stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis., Materials and Methods: A total of 163 patients with minor stroke treated with thrombolysis within window time were recruited from 2013 to 2017. Their total neutrophil and leukocyte counts on admission were measured. Disability or death (defined as a modified Rankin scale score ≥2) at 90-day were captured. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between neutrophil counts, and neutrophil ratio to clinical outcome. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive value of neutrophil counts or neutrophil ratio., Results: At the 90-day follow-up, 36 patients (21%) had disability or death after stroke onset. Compared to the first tertile, the higher neutrophil counts increased the risk of 90-day disability or death (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] for third tertile: 2.93 (1.08-7.96); P for trend = .03). Similarly, higher neutrophil ratio also increased the risk of disability or death (aOR for third tertile: 5.81 (1.7-19.88); P for trend = .005). The comparison of area under the curve for neutrophil ratio versus neutrophils was .1 (P = .04). Thus, neutrophil ratio with the cutoff point of .74 had a better discriminative ability to the outcome (6.11, 2.36-15.86)., Conclusions: Baseline higher neutrophil counts and neutrophil ratio were associated with an increased risk of 90-day disability or death in patients with minor stroke who received thrombolytic therapy., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. This study aimed to determine whether an association existed between breastfeeding and myopia in children aged 6-12 years in Tianjin, China, using a cross-sectional study of 527 children. The spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) were determined by ocular examination, and information regarding the children's demographics, breastfeeding history and other myopia-related risk factors were investigated using a questionnaire. The myopia prevalence rate, mean SER, and mean AL were 53.9%, -0.99 ± 1.69 D, and 23.56 ± 1.11 mm, respectively. In total, 442 (83.9%) participants were breastfed; among the breastfed participants, 132 (29.9%) were breastfed <6 months. Children who were breastfed were less likely to have myopia (breastfeeding duration <6 months: OR = 0.399, P = 0.011; >6 months: OR = 0.502, P = 0.033, multiple logistical regression). The mean SER of children breastfed <6 months was 0.653 D more hyperopic than that of non-breastfed children (P = 0.008, multiple linear regression). No significant association was observed between breastfeeding and AL. In conclusion, breastfeeding was associated with a decreased risk of myopia among children aged 6-12 years in Tianjin. Breastfeeding during the first 6 months of infancy was associated with more hyperopic SER. Furthermore, breastfeeding was associated with myopic refraction and was not related to AL, and this association could exist in childhood.
