The study investigated the relationship between listening and reading vocabularies and their contributions to English listening comprehension of advanced Chinese EFL learners from two universities in China. Measures of reading and listening vocabularies consisted of 5,000 and academic vocabularies. Two tasks involved in the listening comprehension test were gap-filling and multiple-choice. Results showed the moderate correlation between listening and reading vocabularies; Chinese EFL learners' reading vocabulary knowledge outperformed the listening counterpart. Listening academic vocabulary made a unique contribution to the performance on both the gap-filling task and the entire listening section above and beyond other subcategories of vocabulary. Reading vocabulary was not a predictor of the multiple-choice task. However, the significant effect of reading vocabulary on the gap-filling task suggested that the task might not be an appropriate instrument to assess learners' listening skill. Importance: Previous studies have shown that Jinlida (JLD) granules, an approved treatment for type 2 diabetes in China, can reduce blood glucose level, reduce glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and improve insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes., Objective: To evaluate the effect of long-term administration of JLD vs placebo on the incidence of diabetes in participants with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and multiple metabolic abnormalities., Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial (FOCUS) was conducted across 35 centers in 21 cities in China from June 2019 to February 2023. Individuals aged 18 to 70 years with IGT and multiple metabolic abnormalities were enrolled., Intervention: Participants were randomly allocated 1:1 to receive JLD or placebo (9 g, 3 times per day, orally). They continued this regimen until they developed diabetes, withdrew from the study, were lost to follow-up, or died., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the occurrence of diabetes, which was determined by 2 consecutive oral glucose tolerance tests. Secondary outcomes included waist circumference; fasting and 2-hour postprandial plasma glucose levels; HbA1c; fasting insulin level; homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR); total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels; ankle-brachial index; and carotid intima-media thickness., Results: A total of 889 participants were randomized, of whom 885 were in the full analysis set (442 in the JLD group; 443 in the placebo group; mean [SD] age, 52.57 [10.33] years; 463 [52.32%] female). Following a median observation period of 2.20 years (IQR, 1.27-2.64 years), participants in the JLD group had a lower risk of developing diabetes compared with those in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.46-0.74; P < .001). During the follow-up period, the JLD group had a between-group difference of 0.95 cm (95% CI, 0.36-1.55 cm) in waist circumference, 9.2 mg/dL (95% CI, 5.4-13.0 mg/dL) in 2-hour postprandial blood glucose level, 3.8 mg/dL (95% CI, 2.2-5.6 mg/dL) in fasting blood glucose level, 0.20% (95% CI, 0.13%-0.27%) in HbA1c, 6.6 mg/dL (95% CI, 1.9-11.2) in total cholesterol level, 4.3 mg/dL (95% CI, 0.8-7.7 mg/dL) in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, 25.7 mg/dL (95% CI, 15.9-35.4 mg/dL) in triglyceride levels, and 0.47 (95% CI, 0.12-0.83) in HOMA-IR compared with the placebo group. After 24 months of follow-up, the JLD group had a significant improvement in ankle-brachial index and waist circumference compared with the placebo group., Conclusions and Relevance: The findings suggest that JLD can reduce the risk of diabetes in participants with IGT and multiple metabolic abnormalities., Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Register: ChiCTR1900023241.

Introduction: Radiographic bone age (BA) assessment is widely used to evaluate children's growth disorders and predict their future height. Moreover, children are more sensitive and vulnerable to X-ray radiation exposure than adults. The purpose of this study is to develop a new, safer, radiation-free BA assessment method for children by using three-dimensional ultrasound (3D-US) and artificial intelligence (AI), and to test the diagnostic accuracy and reliability of this method., Methods and Analysis: This is a prospective, observational study. All participants will be recruited through Paediatric Growth and Development Clinic. All participants will receive left hand 3D-US and X-ray examination at the Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital on the same day, all images will be recorded. These image related data will be collected and randomly divided into training set (80% of all) and test set (20% of all). The training set will be used to establish a cascade network of 3D-US skeletal image segmentation and BA prediction model to achieve end-to-end prediction of image to BA. The test set will be used to evaluate the accuracy of AI BA model of 3D-US. We have developed a new ultrasonic scanning device, which can be proposed to automatic 3D-US scanning of hands. AI algorithms, such as convolutional neural network, will be used to identify and segment the skeletal structures in the hand 3D-US images. We will achieve automatic segmentation of hand skeletal 3D-US images, establish BA prediction model of 3D-US, and test the accuracy of the prediction model., Ethics and Dissemination: The Ethics Committee of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital approved this study. Rationale: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious acute condition affecting the abdomen and shows high morbidity and mortality rates. Its global incidence has increased in recent years. Inflammation and oxidative stress are potential therapeutic targets for AP. This study was conducted to investigate the intrinsic anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of Prussian blue nanozyme (PBzyme) on AP, along with its underlying mechanism. Methods: Prussian blue nanozymes were prepared by polyvinylpyrrolidone modification method. The effect of PBzyme on inhibiting inflammation and scavenging reactive oxygen species was verified at the cellular level. The efficacy and mechanism of PBzyme for prophylactically treating AP were evaluated using the following methods: serum testing in vivo , histological scoring following hematoxylin and eosin staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling fluorescence staining, polymerase chain reaction array, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis and Western blotting analysis. Results: The synthetic PBzyme showed potent anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in reducing oxidative stress and alleviating inflammation both in vitro and in vivo in the prophylactic treatment of AP. The prophylactic therapeutic efficacy of PBzyme on AP may involve inhibition of the toll-like receptor/nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway and reactive oxygen species scavenging. Conclusion: The single-component, gram-level mass production, stable intrinsic biological activity, biosafety, and good therapeutic efficacy suggest the potential of PBzyme in the preventive treatment of AP. We aimed to (i) develop a population pharmacokinetic model of tacrolimus in Chinese lung transplant recipients and (ii) propose model-based dosing regimens for individualized treatment. We obtained 807 tacrolimus steady-state whole blood concentrations from 52 lung transplant patients and genotyped CYP3A5*3. Population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling. Monte Carlo simulations were employed to determine the initial dosing regimens. Tacrolimus pharmacokinetics was described by a one-compartment model with first-order absorption and elimination processes. In CYP3A5*3/*3 70-kg patients with 30% hematocrit and voriconazole-free therapy, the mean estimated apparent clearance was 13.1 l h -1 with 20.1% between-subject variability, which was lower than that in Caucasian lung transplant patients (17.5-36.5 l h -1 ). Hematocrit, postoperative days, tacrolimus daily dose, voriconazole concomitant therapy, and CYP3A5*3 genotype were identified as significant covariates for tacrolimus clearance. To achieve target trough concentration (10-15 ng ml -1 ) on the 8th day post-transplant, a higher initial dosage than the current regimen of 0.04 mg kg -1 every 12 h is recommended for CYP3A5*1/*3 patients without voriconazole concomitant therapy. This study aimed to explore the influence of remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) on radial artery occlusion (RAO) and distinguish the risk factors for RAO. A total of 640 consecutive patients who prospectively underwent transradial artery coronary angiography (TRACA) (322 patients received RIC before TRACA) were enrolled. RIC was not performed in 318 patients. RAO was estimated using Doppler ultrasonography after the procedure. Patients were divided into two groups according to the protocol of RIC: RIC and non-RIC. The rate of RAO was significantly lower in the RIC group than in the non-RIC group. Patients were divided into two groups according to the patency of radial artery: radial artery patency (RAP) and RAO. The radial artery diameter was significantly narrower in the RAO group (2.31 ± 0.53) than in the RAP group (2.59 ± 0.47). The rate of applying β-blocker was significantly higher in the RAP group (69%) than in the RAO group (41%). The rate of applying trimetazidine was significantly higher in the RAP group (49.1%) than in the RAO group (17.6%). The multiple logistic regression analysis using radial artery diameter, RIC, β-blocker, and trimetazidine treatments revealed that small radial artery diameter, lack of β-blockers, and RIC were independent predictors of RAO. RIC might help in improving the rate of RAO. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the lack of β-blockers, RIC, and small radial artery diameter were independent predictors of RAO.

Background/aims: The epidermal growth factor and its receptor play an important role in the development of gastric cancer. We investigate the potential association between epidermal growth factor and its receptor gene polymorphisms with gastric cancer in a Chinese Han population., Methodology: Polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism strategies were used to genotype EGF +61 G/A and EGFR+2073 A/T in 207 gastric cancer cases and 318 healthy controls., Results: The A allele of EGF +61 G/A was less frequently in gastric cancer patients than in controls(OR=0.73, 95%CI=0.55-0.95, p=0.02). The A allele frequency was also associated with deeper tumor invasion(OR=1.74, 95%CI=1.05-2.89, p=0.03), increased lymph node metastasis (OR=1.74, 95%CI=1.08-2.82, p=0.02)and shorter survival time (95%CI=9.27-16.72, p=0.038).A T allele frequency in the EGFR +2073 A/T polymorphism was associated with increased lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer (OR=1.62, 95%CI=1.06-2.47,p=0.03)., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the A allele of EGF +61 G/A polymorphism decreases the risk of gastric cancer. However, the presence of either the A allele of EGF +61 G/A or the EGFR +2073 T allele indicated a poor prognosis for gastric cancer patients.
