Based on the perspective of flight technology and flight safety, the unsaturated clayey foundation soil of a high plateau airport in the mountainous area of southwest China is taken as the research object, and the calculation method of the composite modulus of CFG pile composite foundation with the soil between the piles as the unsaturated soil is established according to the relevant characteristics of unsaturated soil, and the calculation method of the composite foundation's settlement is carried out on the basis of this method. At the same time, Plaxis finite element analysis software is used to model the actual project and numerically analyze the settlement characteristics of the composite foundation. Finally, the calculation results of the two methods are compared and studied with the actual settlement monitoring values on site. The study shows that: 1) the theoretical analysis method is able to consider the effects of pile length, pile modulus, and matrix suction in unsaturated soil of rigid piles on the composite modulus, which is more in line with the reality than the conventional composite modulus method that does not consider the unsaturated nature of the soil between the piles; 2) the resultant values computed by the theoretical and numerical analysis methods recommended in this paper are both smaller than those measured at the site but the difference is within the range of 10%, so that in the actual plateau of the High Plains airports can choose the two analysis methods recommended in this paper to conduct related research. Soil properties are crucial in forest ecological management and rare vegetation protection. In this study, Fanjing Mountain, a typical subtropical forest, was used to investigate and analyze the differences in soil properties and climate change characteristics of Fanjing Mountain in 1982 and 2014. Then redundancy analysis was used to analyze the influence of climate factors on soil properties. The results showed that: 1) Compared to 1982, the soil properties of Fanjian Mountain changed significantly in 2014. The soil texture evolved from a silty loam in 1982 to a silty clay loam in 2014. There was a significant increase in soil clay particles. In addition, the soil showed acidification, weakened cation exchange capacity, and relatively stable soil total nitrogen but significant loss of soil organic matter and total phosphorus nutrients. 2) In the past 32 years, the environmental climate of Fanjing Mountain has shown the characteristics of increasing annual average temperature and annual rainfall, frequent extreme temperature, widening the annual temperature range and decreasing annual relative humidity. 3) Soil type and maximum annual temperature have a highly significant effect on the evolution of soil properties, while annual rainfall and slope orientation significantly affect the evolution. Natural source zone depletion (NSZD) is the main process of LNAPL (Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid) removal under natural conditions. The NSZD rates assessed ranged from 0.55 to 11.55 kg·m−2·a−1 (kilograms per square meter per year) in previous studies. However, most of these data were obtained from sandy sites, with few clayey sites. To gain knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil sites, the study assessed the NSZD of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated clayey soil site in China, combining the concentration gradient method with metagenomic sequencing technology. The results show that the abundance of methane-producing key enzyme mcrA gene in the source zone was more abundant than in background areas, which suggests that there was methanogenesis, the key process of NSZD. The concentration gradients of oxygen and carbon dioxide existed only in shallow soil (<0.7 m), which suggests that there was a thin methane oxidation zone in the shallow zone. The calculated NSZD rates range from 0.23 to 1.15 kg·m−2·a−1, which fall within the moderate range compared to previous NSZD sites. This study expands the knowledge of NSZD in clayey soil and enriches the attenuation rate data for contaminated sites, which is of significant importance in managing petroleum contaminants. • Calibration of red clay with different water contents based on EDEM software. • The Hertz-Mindlin with JKR Cohesion model was used to model red clay soil's physical properties. • Experimental studies provide insights into the impact of soil moisture content on its properties. • Technical references for future research on soil-tool interactions were provided. Distinct physical properties of red clay soil in hilly and mountainous regions of southwest China, including high adhesiveness and density, challenge the operation of agricultural machinery. A scarcity of accurate discrete element simulation parameters for this soil type restricts computational modeling. The study was focused on red clay soil with a moisture content of 12.50% ± 1% and a measured repose angle of 35.54°. The soil's inherent physical properties were identified through experimental assessments. Soil contact mechanical parameters were obtained from the GEMM database, and optimal contact parameter ranges were determined using Steepest Ascent Experiments, with the simulated soil particle repose angle serving as the response value. A second-order regression model was developed using a quadratic regression rotation orthogonal combination test. By taking the actual repose angle as the optimization criterion, parameters were optimized. The optimal contact mechanical parameters in EDEM simulations were identified as: JKR surface energy at 8.981 J/m2, recovery coefficient at 0.474, dynamic friction coefficient at 0.196, and static friction coefficient at 0.45. The model yielded a repose angle of 36.21°, closely corresponding with the observed value, with a relative error of 1.80%. The Mg isotopic compositions of siliciclastic components (δ26Mgsili) of sediments and sedimentary rocks have been commonly used to constrain the intensity of continental weathering, based on observations of, (1) an upward enrichment of 26Mg in modern weathering profiles, (2) preferential uptake of 26Mg in soil clays, and (3) general positive correlations between weathering intensities and δ26Mgsili values. However, not all weathering profiles display an upward increase of δ26Mgsili, and not all soil clays enrich in 26Mg, complicating the interpretations of δ26Mgsili data of sediments and sedimentary rocks. To further explore the controls of δ26Mgsili of sediments and sedimentary rocks, here we measured δ26Mgsili, mineralogical compositions and major element compositions of deep sea sediments from South China Sea (SCS) and carbonate rock samples from two late Paleozoic sections in South China. Carbonate samples show decreasing trends of both normalized Mg concentration (Mgnorm) and δ26Mgsili values with the increase of weathering intensity, while SCS sediments samples do not show any correlation between Mgnorm or δ26Mgsili values and weathering intensity. A three-stages weathering model is developed to explain the observed Mgnorm and δ26Mgsili data. In the new model, weathering can be divided into three stages, (1) the preliminary weathering stage characterized by dissolution of primary minerals and formation of secondary clay minerals in saprolite, (2) the transitional stage with massive vermiculite and chlorite formation on the bottom of soil, and (3) the advanced stage showing dissolution of vermiculite and chlorite in the top of soil. The new model explains an δ26Mgsili increase and Mgnorm decrease with an increase weathering intensity in preliminary weathering stage and decrease of Mgnorm and δ26Mgsiliwith increase weathering intensity in advanced weathering stage. Soil salinization affects more than 25% of land globally. Subsurface pipe drainage is known for its effectiveness in improving saline–alkali land. The red clay layer (RCL) hinders soil improvement in the Hetao Irrigation District of Inner Mongolia, China. The soil water and salt migration rules at different buried depths and RCL were studied based on the field subsurface pipe drainage test and simulation using the DRAINMOD-S model (Version 6.1). The following implications can be drawn from the results: (1) Although the RCL affected the accuracy of the model, the calibrated statistical results met the application requirements, and the DRAINMOD-S model can be used to analyze subsurface pipe drainage under different distribution conditions of the RCL. (2) The RCL can reduce the drainage efficiency of the subsurface pipe, specifically when the distribution is shallow. (3) The soil desalting rate increased with an increase in the buried depth of the subsurface pipe. The desalination effect of shallow soil was better than that of deep soil. The RCL reduced the drainage and salt removal efficiency of the subsurface pipe. Burying the subsurface pipe as far above the RCL as possible should be considered. Lily bulb is an underground tuber crop, which is mainly grown in southern China. At present, lily bulb harvesting mainly adopts manual excavation, resulting in low labor efficiency. Coupled with the high soil viscosity in lily bulb planting area, there are some problems in lily bulb mechanized harvesting, such as difficulty in fruit-soil separation and high damage rate of lily bulb. In order to solve the problems of poor separation effect, high rate of buried fruit and high crushing rate during lily bulb harvest in sticky soil, a kind of throwing roller lily bulb harvester suitable for operation in sticky soil was designed. The throwing roller lily bulb harvester is composed of vibration conveying device, throwing roller set, excavating shovel and other parts. It has the functions of vibrating crushing soil, throwing crushing soil and material conveying. It can effectively realize the secondary crushing of clay soil, and the separation effect of fruit-soil is good and does not hurt lily bulb, which is very suitable for the mechanical harvesting of lily bulb under the condition of clay soil. Combined with the growth condition of lily bulb and the requirements of planting agriculture, the motion process and separation mechanism of fruit and soil mixture on the vibration conveying device and the throwing roller set were analyzed, the dynamic model of throwing and colliding crushed soil on the throwing roller was established, and the relationship between the structure size of the throwing roller and the crushing of the clay-heavy soil block was established. Through the analysis, the structure and maximum swing Angle of the vibration conveying device, the series of throwing roll sets, the number of throwing roll teeth, the diameter of throwing roll and the contour size and other parameters were obtained. Through theoretical analysis and calculation, the structural parameters of vibration conveying device and throwing roller set of key components were determined. The length of vibration grating rod of vibration conveying device was 150mm, the distance between vibration grating rod was 50 mm, and the swing Angle of vibration grating rod was 59.12°. The number of teeth of the throwing roller wheel was 4 teeth. The radius of the throwing roller wheel was 250 mm. The spacing of the throwing roller wheel was 50 mm. According to the designed structural parameters, a prototype was built and the multi-factor test of operation parameters was carried out. The forward speed of the fruit-soil separation mechanism, the rotation speed of the throwing roller and the digging depth were taken as the test factors, and the embedding rate and crushing rate of lily bulb were taken as the test indicators. Box-Benhnken test method was used to establish the regression equation of factors and test indicators and the influence law of factors on lily bulb harvest index was obtained. When the optimum parameter combination was 0.6 m/s, 90 r/min and 170 mm, the field test values of the rate of buried fruit and the rate of broken lily bulb were 6.3% and 7.1%, respectively. To achieve the carbonization utilization of Triarrhena lutarioriparia straw and relieve the environmental pressure caused by improper disposal in the Dongting Lake area, the agricultural efficiency of biochar derived from Triarrhena lutarioriparia was clarified. Two typical paddy soils in southern China, namely reddish clayey soil developed from a Quaternary laterite parent material and granitic sandy soil developed from a granite parent material, were selected. Six treatments with different dosage of biochar (0, 1%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% of the soil mass，0-20 cm soil depth) were set. Rice pot experiments were conducted in 2020 to study the effects of different application rates of Triarrhena lutarioriparia biochar on rice nutrient utilization characteristics in two typical soils. The results showed different application rates of Triarrhena lutarioriparia biochar and soil types had certain effects on dry matter accumulation and nutrient uptake by rice organs and aboveground structures. With the addition of biochar, compared with the treatment without biochar, the accumulation of dry matter of rice increased from 0.6% to 18.6% and from 15.5% to 42.4% in the granitic sandy soil and reddish clayey soil, respectively. With the addition of 4% biochar, the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients in the rice plant of the treatment increased by 8.6%, 10.5%, and 82.5% in the granitic sandy soil and by 33.8%, 100.0%, and 125.3% in the reddish clayey soil, respectively. The quadratic regression equation and fertilizer – carbon coupling model fitting showed that the optimal addition amounts of biochar in the granitic sandy soil and reddish clayey soil were 2.51% and 4.80% for nitrogen utilization, 4.33% and 7.03% for phosphorus utilization, and 4.67% and 4.81% for potassium utilization, respectively. Therefore, the application of Triarrhena lutarioriparia biochar is conducive to promoting the accumulation and growth of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrients in rice, and the amount of biochar added and soil conditions are important factors affecting the coupling effect of fertilizer and carbon. Soil moisture content (SWC) can change the diversity and composition of soil fungal communities by affecting soil texture and soil nutrients. To explore the response of soil fungal communities to moisture in the grassland ecosystem on the south shore of Hulun Lake, we set up a natural moisture gradient that was subdivided into high (HW), medium (MW), and low (LW) water contents. Vegetation was investigated by quadrat method, and aboveground biomass was collected by the mowing method. Soil physicochemical properties were obtained by internal experiments. The composition of the soil fungal community was determined using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed significant differences in soil texture, nutrients, and fungal species diversity under the moisture gradients. Although there was significant clustering of fungal communities in different treatments, the fungal community composition was not significantly different. According to the phylogenetic tree, the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most important branches. The fungal species diversity was smaller when SWC was higher, and in this environment (HW), the fungal-dominant species were significantly related to SWC and soil nutrients. At this time, soil clay formed a protective barrier for the survival of the dominant classes Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes and increased their relative abundance. In summary, the fungal community responded significantly to SWC on the southern shore of the Hulun Lake ecosystem in Inner Mongolia, China, and the fungal community composition of the HW group was stable and easier to survive. Although a number of studies have provided information on soil texture, soil classification, and depth to bedrock throughout China, few studies have combined this information, which is the basis for agricultural field management. A total of 81% of China's cultivated lands are distributed among the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain (18.2%), arid and semiarid North China Plain (18.2%), Northeast Plain (17%), Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (16.1%), and Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau (11.6%). The Huang-Huai-Hai Plain has the highest density of agricultural land (58.5%) and the greatest depth to bedrock of cultivated land (243–402 m). The lowest cultivated depth to bedrock (4–84 m) is concentrated in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding regions. The main cultivated soil types are Anthrosols, Fluvisols, Cambisols, Phaeozems, Luvisols, Kastanozems, Leptosols, and Acrisols, under the main topsoil texture classes of loam, clay loam, silty clay loam, silt loam, sandy loam, and clay. The Fluvisols had the largest depth to bedrock (156 m) on the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain and Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, with the highest silt soil distributions but comparable lower sand contents. The Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau had the highest clay soil content. The cultivation under Kastanozems and Leptosols on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and in arid and semiarid North China and under Phaeozems on the Northeast Plain should be restricted and managed very cautiously facing erosion risk. The higher percentages of Anthrosols are on the Middle–Lower Yangtze Plain (37%), in Southern China (32%), and on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau (26%). The same cultivation aim (i.e., more crop 0production) has produced a similar range of properties over time among the soils developed on agricultural fields, which are classified as Anthrosols. However, various soil types can still be found in agroecosystems because of the variations in climate and topography. Our results highlight that the agriculture-based soil climate and topography shape the interaction of the soil development and not only the pedogenic history of the soil development under variations in the soil depth to bedrock but also the cultivation of distinct pedogenic features. This study provides cultivated soil information on the depth to bedrock, soil classification, and soil texture in China, as well as instructions for field strategies for sustainable agricultural development. Over-fertilization has a significant impact on soil microbial properties and its ecological environment. However, the effects of long-term fertilization on microbial properties on a large scale are still vague. This meta-analysis collected 6211 data points from 109 long-term experimental sites in China to evaluate the effects of fertilizer type and fertilization duration, as well as soil and climate conditions, on the effect sizes on various microbial properties and indices. The organic fertilizers combined with straw (NPKS) and manure (NPKM) had the highest effect sizes, while the chemical fertilizers N (sole N fertilizer) and NPK (NPK fertilizer) had the lowest. When compared with the control, NPKM treatment had the highest effect size, while N treatment had the lowest effect size on MBN (111% vs. 19%), PLFA (110% vs. −7%), fungi (88% vs. 43%), Actinomycetes (97% vs. 44%), urease (77% vs. 25%), catalase (15% vs. −11%), and phosphatase (58% vs. 4%). NPKM treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on bacteria (123% vs. 33%). NPKS treatment had the highest while N treatment had the lowest effect sizes on MBC (77% vs. 8%) and invertase (59% vs. 0.2%). NPKS treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on the Shannon index (5% vs. 1%). The effect sizes of NPKM treatment were the highest predominantly in arid regions because of the naturally low organic carbon in soils of these regions. The effect sizes on various microbial properties were also highly dependent on soil texture. In coarse-textured soils the effect sizes on MBC and MBN peaked sooner compared with those of clayey or silty soils, although various enzymes were most active in silty soils during the first 10 years of fertilization. Effect sizes on microbial properties were generally higher under NPKM and NPKS treatments than under NPK or N treatments, with considerable effects due to climate conditions. The optimal field fertilizer regime could be determined based on the effects of fertilizer type on soil microorganisms under various climate conditions and soil textures. This will contribute to the microbial biodiversity and soil health of agricultural land. Such controls should be used for adaptation of fertilization strategies to global changes. Based on the soil temperature and humidity data of soybean farmland under conservation tillage in Northeast China in the published article, the impact of conservation tillage measures on the soil hydrothermal status of soybean farmland in Northeast China was quantitatively assessed by using conventional tillage (CT) as a control, no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT), straw mulching (SM), and no-till straw mulching (NTSM) as treatments. The results showed: compared with CT, conservation tillage increased the soil volume water content of 0-170cm soil layer in soybean farmland in Northeast China by 9.2%, and reduced the temperature of the shallow soil layer (0-30cm) by 8.2%. Four conservation tillage could increase soil moisture under different climatic conditions; straw mulching could increase soil moisture content throughout the growth period of soybeans, and the effect on soil hydrothermal was greatest during the nutrition period of soybean, and soil temperature increased with the increase of straw mulching; the magnitude of soil temperature reduction by conservation tillage decreases with the decrease of soil clay particles, the magnitude of soil moisture increased by conservation tillage decreases with the increase of soil depth. Among them, NTSM at different soil depths was the most obvious effect of water storage and moisture retention, and the soil moisture in the soil layer of 0-20cm was increased by 32.9%. In summary, conservation tillage could increase soil moisture but reduce soil temperatures. Temperature, precipitation, growth period, straw mulching amount, soil type and soil depth all had an impact on soil hydro-thermality in soybean farmland under conservation tillage. Identifying the impact path of climate and soil factors on soil δ15N is very crucial for better understanding the N turnover in soils and the integrated information about ecosystem N cycling. Many studies have showed that climate and soil variables influence the change of soil δ15N. However, most of the existing studies focused on the overall impact of factor on soil δ15N, without distinguishing between the direct and indirect effect. Although scholars have studied the relationships among temperature, precipitation, soil N, soil pH, and soil δ15N rather than estimating all the causal relationships simultaneously. To answer the above-mentioned questions, a regional-scale soil collection was conducted across a temperate grassland in northern China. Meanwhile, a PLS-PATH analysis was utilized to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of various factors on soil δ15N and to explore the causal relationships among variables. The results showed that along the transect, mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT) directly and significantly reduced soil δ15N, and indirectly affected soil δ15N through their effects on soil pH, soil clay, soil N and soil C/N. Soil C/N ratio has a significant direct impact on soil δ15N with a negative correlation. Soil clay, soil N content, and soil pH have a total positive effect on soil δ15N, but the total positive impact of soil pH is very weak because it has a negative indirect impact on soil δ15N by affecting soil clay, soil N and soil C/N ratio. The total influence is, in order, MAP > MAT > soil C/N > soil clay > soil N > soil pH (in absolute value). The spatial variability in soil water content in the Daliuta mining area in western China was studied before and after coal mining using ground penetrating radar and geostatistical methods. The relationships among soil water content, soil physical properties, topographical factors, and vegetation density were analysed using classical statistics. The average surface soil water content changed slightly between the two detection events at the centre of the subsidence, from 0.084 cm3/cm3 to 0.079 cm3/cm3; there, the distribution of the soil water content was more closely related to terrain than any of the other factors being considered. Along the subsidence boundary, the surface soil water content decreased significantly after mining, from 0.099 cm3/cm3 to 0.083 cm3/cm3 at one location. The total soil porosity, soil organic matter, and soil clay content were positively correlated with soil water content before mining. However, after mining, the relationship between total soil porosity and soil water content significantly strengthened while the relationships between other soil physical and chemical properties and soil water content weakened. Vegetation was determined to be the main factor controlling the surface soil water content before and after coal mining at one location in a small (1,600 m2) area of the subsidence boundary. Seedling establishment is critical for grain yield and net benefits of wheat in wet clay soil after puddled rice harvest in the Yangtze River basin (YRB) of China. A wet-resistant rotary strip-till seeder (WR seeder) was developed to drill seeds in zero tillage (ZT) conditions with complete rice residue mulching. The rotary blades adopted were medium radius C type blades creating a 50–60 mm wide and 30–50 mm deep furrow for seed placement. The pressing roller, usually used in the traditional wheat seeders, has been replaced by two ground wheels covered in rubber to reduce the mud adhesion. Moreover, a stainless-steel chain was installed behind the machine for better seed covering with soil. Based on three-year long field comparisons with the traditional deep tillage seeder (DT seeder) and a rototiller disc-type seeder with shallow tillage (SHT seeder), the six-row WR seeder significantly enhanced seedling establishment, and reduced energy consumption by 51.3% and 24.5%, respectively. The WR seeder also conserved the topsoil moisture. Over three years, the WR seeder produced similar grain yield to the SHT seeder, but 3.1% more than the DT seeder. Moreover, the net profit with WR seeder increased by 39.4% and 0.9% compared to the DT and SHT seeders, respectively. Furthermore, comparisons across the YRB also confirmed the positive effects of the WR seeder on grain yield and economic benefits over the conventional seeding practices. The effects of irrigation on winter wheat yield and water use efficiency (WUE) were mostly explored based on site-based experiments in North China Plain (NCP) region. However, due to the influences of contrasting environmental factors (e.g. climate and soil properties), these results cannot be accurately cross-compared among different studies, resulting in the difficulty to get the generalizable pattern at regional scale. Here meta-analysis was conducted to comprehensively evaluate the effects of irrigation on winter wheat yield and WUE in NCP region, with the observation data of 1876 pairs from 186 field experimental papers totally. The differences of the irrigation effects in different regions, precipitation year types, soil texture, and nitrogen (N) application levels were explored, and the corresponding optimal irrigation amounts for reaching high yield and WUE were ascertained. Results showed that compared with non-irrigation during the winter wheat growing period, irrigation increased the yield of winter wheat in NCP by 32.0%-38.3%, and reduced the WUE by 27.1%-30.1%. The yield increment due to irrigation in the northwest of NCP (39.6%-53.5%) with total precipitation during the winter wheat growing period below 150mm was higher than that in the southeast of NCP (24.3%-27.1%) with total precipitation during the winter wheat growing period higher than 150mm, while the decrease of WUE due to irrigation in northwest of NCP (32.4%-37.5%) was higher than that in the southeast of NCP (22.0%-24.3%). The optimum irrigation amount for high yield and WUE of winter wheat was 150-180mm in the northwest and 120-150mm in the southeast. Specifically, for different precipitation year types, the optimum irrigation amounts were 120-150mm with 2 times during jointing and flowering stages for dry year, during jointing and heading stages for normal year, and during jointing and booting stages for wet year. For different soil texture, irrigation under loamy soil had the highest increases in yield, while clay soil had the lowest decreases in WUE; the optimum irrigation amounts of winter wheat with four different soil texture of sandy soil, loam, clay loam and clay were 60-90mm, 120-150mm, 180-210mm, and 150-180mm, respectively. For different N application levels, N application of 120-240kg.ha-1 led to the highest yield and WUE under the irrigation amounts of 80-140mm, of which the higher yield was obtained under irrigation amounts of 110-140mm, and the higher WUE was obtained under the irrigation amounts of 80-110mm. Collectively, the NCP region can achieve the goals of high yield and WUE when irrigation amount was 120-150mm with 2 times but at different stages during different precipitation year types (i.e. dry year, normal year and wet year). Soil erosion is the most severe form of land degradation globally. Farmland shelterbelts are important for reducing erosion, especially erosion caused by the co-occurrence of water and wind. However, few studies have focused on how the distance from the shelterbelt associated with farmland topography affects the redistribution of soil quality indicators. The aims of this study is to reveal the relative importance of these two factors to soil quality under typical wind and water erosion conditions concurrent with the Songnen Plain, China. Topsoils (0–10 cm) were sampled at seven distances from the shelterbelt with three replicates, where topography heterogeneity was also considered. We found that the silt/clay content and soil nutrients at sites farther from the shelterbelt were significantly greater than those at sites closer to the shelterbelt (P < 0.05). Similarly, deposition was dominant at sites farther from the shelterbelt and downslope positions, while erosion was dominant at sites closer to the shelterbelt and upslope positions. Moreover, we discovered that the relative influence of distance from the shelterbelt and farmland elevation varied with individual soil quality indicators. Soil nutrients increased through the deposition of more fine-textured soil (silt/clay) positions farther from the shelterbelt. The downslope region responds to soil deposition by enhancing the plough pan thickness and lowering the bulk density and pH. Overall, distance from the shelterbelt and farmland elevation had interactive effects on soil quality, and erosion was primarily affected by distance from the shelterbelt (63.4 %), followed by elevation (22.7 %). Furthermore, the sites closer to the shelterbelt (i.e., 20 to 420 m) warrant particular attention due to the deposition of coarse-texture materials here. In this study, five loessial soils with varying physicochemical properties were collected in the Loess Plateau of China, and simulated rainfall experiments were carried out in a metal box with a slope of 20 degrees under rainfall intensities of 1, 1.5, and 2 mm min−1. Runoff samples were collected to analyze the variation in erosion rates and effective particle size distribution of eroded sediments during the rainfall process. The results showed that the stream power was the optimal parameter to model the erosion rate, and a power function incorporating the clay content and stream power could well predict the erosion rate of different soils. The enrichment ratio indicated the enrichment of fine particles and depletion of coarse particles. And the sediment sorting degree increased with increasing soil clay content. The critical particle size for distinguishing different transport mechanisms varied among soils, with more than 55.46 % of the total sediment transported by suspension/saltation. A linear function and power function including the original soil particle size distribution and stream power were developed to quantify the sediment clay content and the relative contribution of different transport mechanisms. • Patchiness caused significant reduction of SOC and TN stocks. • Reduced vegetation input and increased erosion output accounted for SOC and TN loss. • Grasslands with high patchiness had a great potential for C and N sequestration. Patchiness acts as an indicator of terrestrial ecosystem degradation and can lead to considerable loss of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen. However, quantitative assessments of the effects of patchiness on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks and their associated mechanisms remain limited. This study aimed to explore the influence mechanisms of patchiness on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks and to project the quantitative contribution of the further expansion of patchiness and vegetation recovery. Soil properties, soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks were investigated using a combination of field sampling and aerial photography in four grassland types, alpine meadow, alpine steppe, temperate grassland, and desert grassland, at 47 sites in northwestern China. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen densities in the bare patches were 34–54 % and 23–41 % lower, respectively, compared to the original vegetation. At the plot-scale, current soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks ranged from 30.85 to 77.80 T/ha and 3.26 to 10.19 T/ha, respectively, across grassland types; with a 10–27 % and 7–24 % potential loss of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks, respectively, from the further expansion of patchiness but a 10–50 % and 9–37 % potential increase in soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks, respectively, from vegetation recovery. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks were positively correlated with vegetation biomass, soil clay content, and precipitation (p < 0.001), whereas they were negatively correlated with patchiness (p < 0.001). In summary, patchiness reduced soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks by decreasing vegetation inputs and increasing erosion outputs, while vegetation recovery showed potential for increasing carbon and nitrogen stocks. Knowledge of soil organic carbon (OC) components and enzyme activities is essential to maintain soil health and for sustainable land use during long-term vegetation restoration. The effects of vegetation restoration on soil physicochemical properties have been widely documented; however, knowledge of the relationships among soil OC components, enzyme activities, and soil properties in restored ecosystems remains unclear. Here, the soil from four successional stages of restored Robinia pseudoacacia vegetation (10, 20, 30, and 40 years) were sampled in China's Loess Plateau. The soil water content (SWC), bulk density (BD), pH, total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) contents, OC components (labile and recalcitrant OC), and soil enzyme (hydrolytic and oxidase) activities were measured. We found that restoration time significantly affects soil physicochemical properties, OC components and enzyme activities. Across the restoration time, the SWC decreased from year 10 to year 30, then increased from year 30 to year 40. Soil OC and TN increased with restoration time, while soil clay content decreased with restoration time. Following 40 years of restoration, soil MBC and MBN significantly increased by 214% and 88%, respectively. For OC components, 40 years of restoration significantly increased recalcitrant C component rather than labile C component. Soil hydrolytic enzyme activities significantly increased by 76.9% and 80.3% in 40 years stand compared with that of in 10 years stand, respectively, while soil oxidase enzyme activities significantly decreased with restoration time. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the SOC and MBC content significantly influenced soil recalcitrant C component and hydrolytic enzyme activities, while MBC and clay content significantly influenced soil oxidase enzyme activities. These results provided useful insights on the responses of forest restoration on soil OC components and related OC degrading enzymes and the understanding of soil C sequestration in the restored ecosystems in such areas. High potential toxic element (PTE) concentrations in soils that exceed local regulatory threshold values have been reported in non-polluted mountainous areas worldwide. However, there have been few studies that have comprehensively investigated the contribution of natural factors including the parental material, pedogenesis processes and physiochemical properties of soils on the distribution of PTEs in these soils. Therefore, in this study, we studied the distribution of 13 PTEs in sloping farmland soils collected from a mountainous watershed in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. The contributions of natural influencing factors were analyzed using a geostatistical analysis and a geographic detector method. All of the PTEs were unevenly distributed, especially Sb, and the average contents of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sb, Tl, Pb and Hg were 57.15, 36.20, 4.61, 12.61, 13.36, 63.50, 11.94, 0.78, 0.37, 6.44, 0.48, 27.42 and 0.36mg/kg, respectively. The proportion of samples with Cd, Hg and As exceeding the screening value of the soil pollution risk of agricultural land in China was 46.7%, 5.9% and 4.4%, respectively. Except for Cd and Pb, the q values of the PTEs calculated from the geographical detector were above 0.05, indicating that altitude changes, which affect the pedogenesis process, have a great impact on the spatial distribution. Stratigraphic factors contributed greatly to the distribution of Co, Ni and Cu, which indicates their similarity in parental material. The combined effect of clay content, topographic factors and agricultural land types had the strongest explanatory power for V, Cr, Mo and Pb. The distributions of As, Sb, Tl and Hg are strongly associated with a potential source of mercury ore, and their accumulation is also enhanced by the adsorption on soil clay. The Yellow River Delta is one of the most abundant offshore energy areas in China, and the construction of offshore projects is rapidly developing. In this paper, four typical regions of the Yellow River Delta in different periods were selected as research objects. In-situ cone penetration tests (CPTs), geotechnical testing, electron microscope scanning testing, and soil type indexing (Ic) was used to classify and identify the soil layers. At the same time, a modified calculation model based on CPT for the shear wave velocity of fine-grained seabed soil was sought and verified with the measured values. The results showed that: (1) the obtained soil layers are mainly classified by clay and silty soil, which is in line with the conclusions of previous scholars on the classification of the Yellow River Delta soil layer. (2) The measured shear wave velocity is generally between 100 m/s and 250 m/s, and it gradually increases with depth. (3) The depth, cone resistance, and soil behavior index are directly related to the calculation of the shear wave velocity in this area. In order to provide a theoretical basis for the evaluation of carbon sequestration potential, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and influencing factors of dissolved organic carbon（DOC）in typical farmland soils with different fertilization treatments in China. Four typical farmland soils, namely black soil, gray desert soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and red soil, were selected to apply different fertilizer levels of no fertilizer（CK）, chemical N fertilizer（N）, chemical NP fertilizer（NP）, chemical NPK fertilizer（NPK）, and NPK plus organic manure（NPKM）to determine the DOC adsorption capacities by the equilibrium adsorption method. The results showed that the DOC adsorption capacities of different types of soils at the same equilibrium concentration were very different, and were generally in the order of gray desert soil and red soil>black soil>fluvo-aquic soil.Q max appeared in the order of red soil>gray desert soil>black soil>fluvoaquic soil in various soils. Among them, the adsorption characteristics of each soil type were quite different under different fertilization treatments. The formation of mineral-bound organic carbon (OC) complexes is important for the long-term preservation of soil organic carbon (SOC) in wetlands. Many coastal wetlands globally have been threatened by plant invasion and land development, but information on the effects on mineral-bound OC is limited. We measured the soil contents of Ca-OC, Fe(Al)–OC and residual OC across 21 coastal wetlands in southern China that have gone through the same sequence of land cover change, from native mudflats (MFs) to Spartina alterniflora marshes (SAs) then to earthen aquaculture ponds (APs). Residual-OC was the main component of SOC (74.1–78.2 %), followed by Fe(Al)–OC (18.4–22.8 %) and Ca-OC (<3.5 %). All three components in the soil increased when MFs were converted to SAs, but decreased in subsequent conversion of SAs to APs. Land cover change affected Fe(Al)–OC the most, but SOC storage increased more strongly with increasing Ca-OC. Nitrogen supply in the form of NH 4 +-N and clay content both positively affected the changes in mineral-bound OC. Our results suggest that different land cover change scenarios had different effects on the amounts of mineral-bound OC and their liability to microbial turnover, resulting in different degrees of SOC preservation and carbon emissions. A significant proportion of the Earth's natural forests has been continuously degraded each year as a result of human activities and global environmental changes. Meanwhile, there has been a rise in the establishment of plantations through numerous planting trees initiatives, including those recently spearheaded by the United Nations (UN) Decade (2021–2030). Yet, considerable global uncertainty remains on drivers of carbon (C) sequestration (defined by C stocks and annualized accumulation rates) in plantations. By using the meta -data from 257 plantation plots in China, we quantified above- and below-ground C stocks and annualized C accumulation rates in tree organs, i.e., stems, branches, leaves, and roots, based on biomass allometric equations and scaling rules. Multiple linear regression models were used to explore the drivers (i.e., stand age, climate and soil factors) of plantation above- and below-ground C stocks and accumulation rates. We show that above- and below-ground C stocks increased with stand age (β = 0.55 to 0.66; P < 0.001) followed by temperature (β = 0.29 to 0.36; P = 0.001 to < 0.001), precipitation seasonality (β = 0.23 to 0.41; P = 0.013 to < 0.001), and somehow by climatic humidity (β = 0.17 to 0.35; P = 0.105 to 0.002), but decreased with isothermality (β = -0.14 to -0.16; P = 0.024 to 0.019). Soil clay content increased stem C stock (β = 0.15; P = 0.016) whereas soil cation exchange capacity increased branch C stock (β = 0.23; P = 0.003), even though soil factors did not significantly affect annualized C accumulation rates (β = -0.12 to 0.14; P = 0.908 to 0.078). This coarse-scale study suggests that C sequestration in China's plantations increases over time with increasing climatic temperature and soil fertility, thereby sustaining environmental conditions by capturing C from the atmosphere and storing it in tree organs. Thus, conserving environment-friendly plantations, having no disruption to native biodiversity, as land resources can reduce pressures on natural forest resources while improving environmental integrity through feedback. The sandy clayey purple soil is widely distributed in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, serving as one of the main soil resources in the mountainous areas of southwest China. Intense physical weathering, loose structure, and low erosion resistance are the main characteristics of sandy clayey purple soil. Therefore, environmental disturbance, such as the water fluctuation near reservoirs, heavy rainfall, and groundwater, often induces soil erosion, landslide, settlement, and soil-water disasters of purple soil. A serious threat has been posed on the village buildings and roads, even the agricultural production. The properties of water immersion disintegration with the sandy clayey purple soil can also be an important reason for water and soil disasters in the southwest mountainous areas. It is necessary to clarify the disintegration characteristics and reinforcement for the water-soil disasters prevention and control. In this study, a disintegration test was performed on the purple soil samples with different initial dry densities, water content, and grain gradation using a self-developed instrument. Meanwhile, the disintegration and evolution of sandy clayey purple soil were also analyzed from the perspective of unsaturated effective stress. Bacillus megaterium was selected to reinforce the soil samples with the Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP), as the more suitable as Sporosarcina pasteurii in the sandy clayey purple soil areas. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was then utilized to characterize the morphologies of the soil sample, thereby determining the MICP improvement on the disintegration characteristics of sandy clayey purple soil. The results show that: 1) Four stages were divided in the whole process of immersion and disintegration of sandy clayey purple soil, including the air-water conversion, equilibrium, disintegration development, and disintegration residual stage. 2) The initial dry density, water content, and grain gradation obviously affected the disintegration characteristics of sandy clayey purple soil. Specifically, the disintegration rate and the average disintegration velocity decreased, with the increase of initial dry density and water content. In addition, the average disintegration velocity of soil increased by the content of fine particles. 3) The evolution of water and air was ranging from the pore water closed, double connected, and pore air closed morphology, with the increasing of the initial saturation. Water was rapidly absorbed into the pores under the matric suction, where the pore pressure was changed significantly. Subsequently, the effective stress of unsaturated soil rapidly reduced to the negative, leading to an interparticle compressive stress (the negative tensile stress). Once the tensile stress reached the value of effective cohesion, the unsaturated strength of purple soil was lost completely. Finally, the soil sample was then destroyed under disintegration. The more severe disintegration was also obtained with the decrease in the initial saturation of a soil sample. The decay process of the unsaturated effective stress depended greatly on the initial saturation after the purple soil was immersed in water. Specifically, the average disintegration velocity attenuated exponentially with the increase of the initial saturation. 4) The disintegration rate and the average disintegration velocity of the MICP treated soil samples decreased by 73 to 97 percentage points and 84%-99%, respectively, compared with the untreated soil. Calcium carbonate crystals formed by solidification and deposition greatly reduced the micro-cracks and large pores in the soil structure. As such, a denser pore structure was achieved to enhance the strength of intergranular cementation for the higher resistance to the disintegration of the soil. Increasing use is being made of phytoliths for quantitative palaeovegetation and palaeoclimatic reconstruction, and consequently studies of phytolith transport are attracting increasing attention. In this context, we conducted a detailed study of factors affecting the soil phytolith transport in six representative natural soil types in Northeast China. We define a phytolith transport index (T) which indicates that transport rates are the lowest in chernozem and chestnut soils, intermediate in dark brown and albic soils, and obviously higher in black and alluvial soils. Additionally, there are differences in the vertical transport of different phytolith types in the soils; however, the transport characteristics are essentially the same among the different soil types. Transport rates are lowest for tabular and blocky phytoliths, followed by bulliform phytolith. By contrast, the rates for short cell, lanceolate and elongate phytoliths are significantly higher, and, notably, these phytolith types have different size and aspect ratios. The transport of phytoliths is also mainly influenced by mean annual precipitation (MAP), soil pH and soil clay content. Climatic factors, especially MAP, are a more significant factor for phytolith transport than phytolith size and aspect ratio. Overall, our findings are significant for the palaeoenvironmental interpretation of soil phytolith assemblages in topsoils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft marine deposits are widely distributed in the coastal region of China. The marine soft clays have high water content and high sensitivity, which shows high compressibility and low strength. The installation of precast piles for wind turbines over soft marine clay will generate high excess pore water pressure (EPWP) with very low dissipation rate, resulting in low bearing capacity and large postconstruction settlement, which will affect long-term stability. This study investigated the generation and dissipation of the EPWP correlated with the change in soil structure during the installation of pile foundations in a project of 100 MW wind-power generation in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China. The results show that the marine soft clay soils feature strong natural structures based on the intrinsic compression concept. The EPWP decreases with increasing distance from the pile, whose influence reaches a distance of 6 m (about 10 times the pile side length). The structural strength of natural sedimentary clay has a remarkable impact on the generated EPWP. The dissipation rate of the EPWP is very slow in mucky clay with more than half the residual value after 30 days, which is mainly attributed to the sharp decline of consolidation coefficient induced by the disturbance of natural clay soils from pile driving. Moreover, hydraulic fracturing can well explain the dissipation characteristics of the EPWP in clay. Miscanthus spp. are increasingly cultivated in cropland worldwide due to their bioenergy potential and multiple ecological services. Effects of long‐term cropland‐to‐Miscanthus conversion without N fertilizer on soil microbiome and N cycling largely remain unknown. We aimed to explore the effects of Miscanthus conversion on soil microbiome and N cycling over a 15‐year period. We analyzed diversity, composition, and abundance of bacterial and archaeal communities using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and abundances of N‐cycling‐related genes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction of 0–10 cm soils collected from bare land, cropland, 10‐year Miscanthus × giganteus, and 15‐year Miscanthussacchriflorus land in Beijing. Conversion decreased soil sand and micro‐aggregate proportion, nitrate N (NiN), available phosphorus levels, conductivity, temperature, and pH, while increasing proportion of soil clay and macro‐aggregate (MAA), soil organic C (SOC), available N (AN), exchangeable Mg2+ (EMg2+), and available potassium (AK) contents as well as microbial C/N. Consequently, diversity, composition, and abundance of soil bacterial community exhibited larger changes than those values of archaeal community after conversion. Soil AP, EMg2+, AK, and SOC were key factors in shifting microbiome from the cropland to Miscanthus pattern. Moreover, abundances of bacterial and archaeal communities and the N fixer gene nifH increased, whereas that of the bacterial ammonia monooxygenase gene decreased. The copies of other N‐cycling‐related genes in the two Miscanthus lands seemed similar to those values of cropland. The nifH copies negatively correlated with soil NiN and positively correlated with AN, EMg2+, ECa2+, SOC, AK, and MAA. We conclude that changes in soil microbiome pattern induced by the variation of soil properties enhance microbial N fixation potential, maintaining stable N levels and robust N cycling with lower N leakage risk after conversion. Soil structure is a key factor to determine the different functions of soil, such as water infiltration and retention, soil permeability, and nutrients availability. The dynamic behavior of soil also depends mainly on the tillage, crop roots, and soil organic matter return. Black soil is one of the most important arable soil with high clay content, but hard soil structure is one of the main factors limiting crop growth. It is still lacking on the effect of organic amendment on soil pore structure in the black soil. In this study, a field experiment was carried out in the black soil region located in Hailun City, Heilongjiang Province of China, in order to clarify the effects of organic amendment and depths on soil physical properties and pore structure before maize sowing in 2019. Four treatments were conducted using random block design with four replicates, including shallow tillage with maize straw return in 0-15 cm soil layer (T1), deep tillage with maize straw return (T2), or combined maize straw and organic manure return (T3) in 0-35 cm soil layer, conventional tillage without organic amendment as control. Maize straw and organic manure were also incorporated into the soil layers by shovel using manual work, where the application rates were 10 000 and 30 000 kg/hm2, respectively. CT scanning was adopted to visualize and quantify soil pore structure after maize harvesting. The constant head method was used to measure the saturated hydraulic conductivity. The results demonstrated that the bulk density under T1, T2, and T3 treatments significantly decreased 3.77%-5.66%, compared with CK, while the saturated hydraulic conductivity increased by 2.2-5.00 times, and the field water capacity increased by 6.91%-11.01% within 0-15 cm soil layer (P<0.05). T2 and T3 treatments also improved the bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and field water capacity within >15-35 cm soil layer after one maize growing season. Furthermore, the number of soil pores and porosity of >500 μm aperture under T1, T2, and T3 treatments significantly increased by 18.1%-180% and 69.2%-256% (P<0.05) in 0-15 cm soil layer, respectively, compared with CK treatment (P<0.05). Specifically, the soil pore number and porosity of >1 000 μm aperture were more 6.06%-150% and 17.4%-196% under T2 treatment than the rest. It infers that the treatments with organic amendment increased the number of soil pores with optimal distribution. In addition, the complexity and connectivity of soil pore also increased significantly, in presence of connected and sender pore. The Euler number values under T1, T2, and T3 treatments were decreased by 21.7%-54.3%, whereas, the fractal dimension under T1 treatment increased by 1.5% in 0-15 cm soil layer (P<0.05), compared with CK treatment. T2 and T3 treatments improved the soil pore structure in >15-35 cm soil layer, as shown in that the Euler decreased by 65.9%-70.5%, anisotropy, fractal dimension, and circularity increased by 50.0%-110%, 12.8%-13.9%, and 12.2%-14.9%, respectively, compared with CK treatment (P<0.05). The Euler and porosity of >1 000 μm aperture presented the largest contribution both for the bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity in 0-35 cm soil layer, whereas, the anisotropy and Euler presented the largest contribution for the field capacity in 0-15 cm and >15-35 cm soil layers. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that the extremely significant negative relationship was found between bulk density and saturated hydraulic conductivity, field water capacity, soil porosity within 0-15 cm soil layer (P<0.01), while the extremely significant or significant correlation was found between bulk density and all indicators, excepting for the anisotropy and Euler. Consequently, the improved physical properties of soil were attributed to the fact that the organic amendment regulated soil structure, including optimal distribution of soil pore, complex, and connectivity of pore structure. Correspondingly, the organic amendment can be expected to serve as an effective approach for the pore structure of black soil. In north-west China, extensive areas of gravel desert exist, whose surface properties have an important effect on the wind-erosion threshold friction velocity u ∗ t . In this study, we use four models and field observations of gravel mass fraction, soil physical crust, and soil clay content to assess the effect of gravel-surface properties on the value of u ∗ t . Results show that gravel coverage in north-west China ranges between 0.07 and 1.00 (with a mean of 0.67), and about 81% of the sites investigated are covered by soil physical crust. Clay content is 2.4% on average in the study region, less than 2% in 52.1% of that region, and between 2 and 4% in the remaining study regions. The four regions where clay content is greater than the mean include the western Alxa Plain, the alluvial fan of the western Alxa Plain, the northern Alxa Plain, and the Hexi Corridor. In the study region, the value of u ∗ t ranges between 0.12 and 0.78 m s−1 (with a mean of 0.45 m s−1). Soil moisture, gravel coverage, and soil physical crust all affect the magnitude of u ∗ t . A principal component analysis indicates that the soil crust contributes of about 62% of the u ∗ t variations, soil moisture 25%, and surface roughness 9%. A variance analysis shows clear spatial differences in the magnitude of u ∗ t in north-west China due to the spatial variations in gravel land-surface properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calcic vertisol is a typical kind of low-yield field with a total area of about 4 million hm2 in China. Calcareous concretion with particle size larger than 2 mm has been one of the representative characteristics of calcic vertisol. The limitation of soil available water is an important reason for crop failure in this region. Therefore, the curve of soil water retention dominates the estimation of available water content. However, most studies focused on the effects of calcareous concretion on soil water retention of calcic vertisol mainly under laboratory conditions. It is lacking that under field conditions. In this study, both field surveys and laboratory experiments were conducted to explore the effect of calcareous concretion distribution in 0-1 m soil profile on soil water retention. Firstly, the spatial distribution of calcareous concretion was investigated in the study plot with 150 m length, 50 m width, and 1 m depth. After then, soil profiles (0-1 m soil depth) were chosen to divide into 5 layers with a 20 cm interval. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in each layer. Physicochemical properties were evaluated to measure the distribution of soil particle size, size and content of calcareous concretion, bulk densities of soil, and calcareous concretions. Meanwhile, the curves of soil water retention were determined using high speed centrifuge. A pressure plate method was conducted to measure water retention curves in calcareous concretion. The results showed that the mass contents of clay, silt, and sand were 30.56%-39.75%, 39.88%-45.34%, and 18.67%-24.45%, respectively, which belonged to silty clay soil in the classification standard of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Clayey particles decreased, but sandy particles increased significantly with the increase of soil depth. Calcareous concretion was mainly distributed in the soil depth of >20-100 cm, where the content and size increased as soil depth increased. Calcareous concretions content in the surface soil (0-20 cm) was very low (with mass content 0.02%), where only a few calcareous concretions of 2-5 mm were discovered. The maximum content of calcareous concretion was detected at > 80-100 cm (up to 11.42%), where the calcareous concretion content was 8.04% in the size of >8-30 mm. Soil bulk density ranged from 1.23-1.61 g cm-3. The densities of calcareous concretions were 2.01, 2.21, and 2.23 g cm-3 with the size of 2-5 mm, >5-8 mm, and >8-30 mm, respectively. Soil bulk density increased along with the calcareous concretion content increasing. Water retention curves of soil and calcareous concretion were well fitted by the van Genuchten model, with the determination coefficient larger than 0.95. The saturated water content of surface soil (0-20 cm) was significantly higher than that of 20-100 cm soil. Nevertheless, the Gravitational-water content in the surface soil (0-20 cm) was much larger than that in the soil of > 20-100 cm, which was related to macropores formed during tillage. In the subsurface (>20-100 cm), soil gravitational-water content and available water-holding capacity increased with the increase of soil depth, but the field capacity and wilting point decreased. Calcareous concretion maintained a non-negligible amount of water, 0.25, 0.22, and 0.20 cm3 /cm3 in the particles with the size of 2-5 mm, >5-8 mm, and >8-30 mm, respectively. But the water-holding capacities of calcareous concretion were significantly lower than that of soil. The effects of calcareous concretion on water-holding capacity mainly occurred in the subsurface soil. Soil saturated water content, field capacity, and wilting point decreased with increasing calcareous concretion. Interestingly, calcareous concretion content was positively correlated with the soil sand content, but negatively correlated with the soil clay content. Calcareous concretion can bind soil particles together to prevent sand weathering, and thereby effectively improve soil texture. More calcareous concretion led to higher sand contents, and thus increased the available water-holding capacity in soil. The article examines an important problem of studying greenhouse gas emissions in forest ecosystems. The CH4 emission and absorption dynamics in the soil have been studied based on the physical–chemical and microbiological analysis of forest products. The changes in forest methanogenesis in relation concerning the value of the hydrothermal coefficient have been examined. It was established that the most intensive emission of greenhouse gases was observed within the value of the hydrothermal coefficient (HTC) of 1.8 ... 2. For soils with the HTC value of <1.3, almost no increase in greenhouse gases level was observed. It was found that fluctuations of methane levels in soil were seasonal. Statistical analysis of the obtained results showed sufficient convergence of the results. Thus, the determination coefficient of the obtained results was R2 > 0.7, the Pearson criterion – χ2 ∼ 1, and the Student's t-criterion >0.8. The results showed that methane is almost completely absorbed by forest soils, while CO2 and N2O are released into the atmosphere. Laboratory studies of soil's adsorption capacity relative to hydrocarbon under dynamic conditions have been performed and it has been established that soils with a high composition of organic matter showed significantly higher absorption capacity in comparison with sandy and clayey soils. In the design of reclamation, long-term settlement is seriously concerned. This paper presents a case study on the ground settlement of a reclamation project in Nansha, China. Fourteen undisturbed soil samples were taken at different depths from this site. Both oedometer tests on fourteen specimens and triaxial hydraulic conductivity tests on nine specimens were conducted. Finite element (FE) modelings using soft soil creep (SSC) model or soft soil (SS) model for modeling clayey soils with or without creep and the calculation using a new simplified method were performed to analyze the consolidation settlement of clay deposits subjected to filled loadings. The FE simulated results and calculated results from the new simplified method were compared with the monitored data in the field. Results show that the curves of the FE modeling using SSC model and the calculation from new simplified method have the same trends as those of the measured settlements. The creep contributes to excess pore pressure dissipation during the consolidation. Furthermore, ground settlements of the reclamation are predicted with the aid of the FE and new simplified method analysis. Conventional X-ray diffraction spectrum and synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction spectrum were used to study the characteristics of soil clay mineral in the terrestrial ecosystem of northern China. The former showed that mineral composition was mainly 2:1 type secondary clay mineral. The existence of clay mineral in the forest soils was identified in the synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction spectrum, whereas there was no evidence for their presence in the other spectrum. Compared with the conventional method, the synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction had better resolution, compactedness and scanning range. Ecological restoration is considered an effective strategy for increasing soil carbon storage and mitigating climate change. However, the impact of revegetation in desert areas on the stability of soil organic carbon (SOC) is still unclear. We investigated the content and stability of SOC in restoration sites along a chronosequence in the Tengger Desert, focusing on the mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) fractions. The content of SOC significantly increased with site age from 0.37 g kg−1 at year 0–5.32 g kg−1 at year 66. Revegetation significantly changed the SOC fraction and improved SOC stability as a factor of site age. In the 66-year-old site, the levels of MAOC and POC were increased by 255.67 and 9.24 times, respectively. The percentage of MAOC was increased from 1.50% to 28.92%, whereas that of POC was decreased from 98.50% to 71.08%. Based on our findings, the content and proportion of MAOC and POC are closely related to plant input, soil variables, and the soil microbial community. We estimate that the maximum content and proportion of MAOC are 2.65 g kg−1 and 36.71% with continuous succession, based on the soil clay and silt contents. Overall, revegetation improved the stability of SOC. Our study highlights the importance of the revegetation of temperate desert areas to further mitigate climate change. • Soil texture effect in temperate grassland region of China is examined. • A strong inverse soil texture effect on vegetation is evidenced. • Loam soil can be used as a benchmark to quantify effect of various textured soils. • Precipitation threshold for inverse texture effect increases with soil coarseness. The inverse texture effect of soil on vegetation has been reported in a few arid regions, but no information is available on the vast Chinese temperate grassland. In addition, no consistent criteria and approaches have been used to classify soil texture groups, determine the precipitation threshold (P θ) below which the inverse texture effect occurs, and quantify the effect size (Z), which has limited the generalization of the rules of the soil texture effect in different ecosystems. We analyzed the soil texture effect on vegetation using the remotely sensed vegetation data (MODIS/NDVI) and the Chinese soil profile texture data at 6851 sites in temperate grasslands of China. We found, first, a strong inverse texture effect, i.e., a higher NDVI on coarse- (>50 % sand) than fine-textured soil in low precipitation areas, and P θ was variable with annual precipitation and averaged 260 mm in the region. Second, we proposed a novel method to use the loam soil as a benchmark against which to quantify the effect of various textured soils, and determine P θ as the point on precipitation gradient where the soil texture effect shift from positive to negative or vice versa. As such, P θ decreased with soil coarseness, and increased with precipitation; and the texture effect decreased from positive to negative for sandy soils, whereas it increased from negative to positive for silt or clay soils, on the gradient of precipitation increase. Our results provide new insights into the relations of vegetation pattern and dynamics with precipitation and soil texture, and a method for quantifying and comparing soil texture effect across ecosystem types. Conventionally, red clay is used for agricultural purposes in southern China. Fertilizers, especially urea, are commonly introduced into the red clay to improve the crop yields. However, due to the rapid urbanization in China, large areas of lands with red clays have been converted into sites for domestic and industrial constructions. Nevertheless, few researchers focused on the effect of urea on the strength and compressibility of red clay. In this research, the shear strength and compressibility of the red clay saturated by different concentrations of the (NH4)2CO3 solution (urea's hydrolysates) were experimentally investigated using direct shear as well as oedometer tests, respectively. It was noticed that both the shear strength and stiffness of the red clay significantly decreased after exposure to the urea solution. In addition, the micromechanisms of the strength and compressibility of the red clay treated by the (NH4)2CO3 were studied by the scanning electron microscope test and X‐ray diffraction test. Based on the test results, a new model was developed to simulate the chemomechanical behavior of saturated clayey soil by modifying the Barcelona basic model (BBM) for unsaturated soils. The proposed model introduces four additional parameters, compared to the BBM, to account for the nonlinear shear strength behavior of the red clay. This model accounts for most of the complex features related to the strength and stiffness behavior of clayey soils. The parameter calibration procedures, by using the oedometer and direct shear test results, are also presented. To validate the proposed model, experimental results from the literature are considered in which illite clay samples were either mechanically or chemically or both mechanically and chemically loaded. Part of the experimental results is used to calibrate the model parameters and the other part along with the calibrated parameters is used to verify the proposed model. A comparison between experimental data and predicted results demonstrated that the proposed model is able to capture the main features related to the chemomechanical coupling behavior of saturated soils. Acid rain (AR) has become an important environmental problem in southern China. In addition, the pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils is increasingly drawing people's attention. In this work, we conducted a series of the simulated acid rain (SAR) soaking tests to study the distribution of organo-mineral aggregates and the release of PAHs in those aggregates. The results showed that the contents of silt and clay in organo-mineral aggregates increased after being soaked by SAR; while the contents of coarse sand and fine sand decreased, the extent of impact increased with increase of SAR pH. The AR facilitated the release of PAHs in organo-mineral aggregates differentially; based on the size of the compounds, the PAHs with less aromatic rings (≤4) in clay and silt released significantly, but the impact of SAR on the release of PAHs with more aromatic rings (≥5) was slight. The amount of PAHs released from organo-mineral aggregates increased with the increase of SAR pH. The contents of clay and hematite in the soil decreased significantly after being soaked by SAR, which results in the decomposition of organo-mineral aggregates, the desorption of organic matter with lower molecular mass from organo-mineral aggregates, and the release of PAHs bond to the aggregates. Black soil in northeast China is well known as high natural fertility for grain production, but the growth and yield of crop can be limited due to the high clay content of black soil can deteriorate physical properties. In this case, both tillage and straw return can be expected to serve as the important agronomic practices, in order to efficiently improve soil physical properties. However, the optimal depth of tillage and straw return into soil for favorable soil physical properties still remained unknown, particularly in black soil region. In this study, a field experiment, referred to the depth of tillage and straw return into soil, was conducted for six years in the black soil region in northeast China, in order to investigate the effects of incorporation depth of tillage and straw return into soil on soil physical properties of black soil. Seven treatments consisted of four replicates and random block design, including no tillage (D0), shallow tillage (0-20 cm) without or with straw return (D20 or D20S), deep tillage (0-35 cm) without or with straw return (D35 or D35S), super deep tillage (0-50 cm) without or with (D50 or D50S) straw return. In the treatments with straw return, a straw rate of 10 000 kg/hm2 was set to return into the corresponding tilled soil layer. Bulk density and water holding capacity were measured using cutting ring method, while the hydraulic conductivity was determined using constant head method, and the aggregate was measured using wet sieving method. The results showed that: 1) Compared with initial soil values, D0 treatment significantly increased soil bulk density, while decreased soil porosity, water holding capacity, hydraulic conductivity and >0.25 mm water stability aggregate (WAS>0.25) within 0-20 cm soil layer (P<0.05). However, there was no significantly impact on those indicators in soil layer within 20-50 cm (P>0.05). 2) In D20, D35 and D50 treatments, there was no obvious impact on the soil physical properties within 0-20 cm soil layer with exception for WAS>0.25 in D50 treatment, but D20S and D35S treatments remarkably all indicators of soil physical properties within 0-20 cm soil layer. 3) D35, D35S, D50 and D50S treatments significantly improved soil physical properties within >20-35 cm soil layer with exception of bulk density in 2014, while D50 and D50S treatments dramatically enhanced soil physical properties within in >35-50 cm soil layer (P<0.05). Specially, aeration porosity and hydraulic conductivity increased significantly, within the corresponding soil layers, while the higher effect was found in the treatment with straw return, compared with only tilled treatments. The comprehensive evaluation also showed that D35S and D50S treatments reached the best effect for improving soil physical properties. Therefore, the findings demonstrated that deep tillage or super deep tillage with straw return can efficiently improve soil physical properties within the whole tilled soil layers, concurrently to increase the depth of tilled soil layer, and thereby to enhance the water infiltration rate and soil water storage in black soil with heavy clay. In view of the positive effect of deep tillage and super tillage with straw return on soil physical properties and the limit of no tillage, the combined tillage practices of deep tillage (or with straw return) and no tillage were proposed for the black soil with high clay in northeast China and other regions. Rice-wheat rotation area, with heavy clay soil texture, that it is wheat planting area accounts for more than 37% of the total wheat sowing area in China as one of the major grain production bases, and rice-wheat rotation is the main cropping pattern in this region. Meanwhile, because of the shortage crop stubble and more rainfall in autumn, which lead to serious wet damage during the tilling and seeding stage for this field. Currently, most of the existing no-tillage and less-tillage seeding equipment for wheat sowing in rice stubble areas were optimized and developed on the basis of traditional contact-type wheat seeding technology, which lead to adhesion and serious blockage phenomenon, as well as increasing of operating resistance and power consumption during working. Therefore, a innovative technical proposal of non-contact type pneumatic seeding technology that could avoid contacting between sowing parts and soil was introduced in this paper, which in order to solve the problems of soil adhesion, blockage, drag increment as well as poor sowing quality for wheat seeders under the condition of sticky heavy loam clay in rice-wheat rotation areas. Experiment that utilized a self-made platform for wheat pneumatic seeding was conducted, which could rip wheat seed into the soil condition of clean seed bed without straw and stubble mulching by high pressure accelerating airflow. During the pneumatic seeding experiment, keeping a certain pneumatic seeding height HG and incident angle α between the accelerating tube and topsoil surface, high-pressure gas was injected from the upper apex of the air nozzle and ejected from the bottom of it, which a stable high-speed airflow was formed in the accelerator tube (the length of the accelerator tube is 600 mm and the diameter is 10 mm). Then wheat seeds were put into the seed entrance and absorbed at a high speed under the negative air pressure of the ejector, during which the rubber sleeve could protect wheat seeds from damaging. After mixing with airflow, wheat seeds were accelerated by high-speed air flow in the accelerating tube. Finally, the wheat seeds flew out and ripped into the soil at a certain incident angle and high pneumatic seeding velocity. At the same time, high-speed photography technology was used to study the parameters of pneumatic seeding velocity, vertical velocity and pneumatic seeding depth under six levels (15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°) of incident angles, and pneumatic seeding experiments under five different accelerating air pressures of 0.2 MPa, 0.4 MPa, 0.6 MPa, 0.8 MPa and 1 MPa for each incident angle were carried out respectively. Pneumatic seeding experimental results showed that: For pneumatic seeding in soil without straw and stubble mulching, when the incident angle increases continuously, wheat seeds can achieve higher vertical component of pneumatic seeding velocity deeper and pneumatic seeding depth at the same accelerating air pressures, the probability of horizontal slip and bounce of wheat seeds after touching soil show an decreasing trend, and pneumatic seeding depth has a positive correlation with pneumatic seeding velocity under each incident angle. Moreover, wheat seeds show various pneumatic seeding depth and soil impact effect without damage after pneumatic seeding. When the incident angles and the vertical component of pneumatic seeding velocity were more than 45° and 25 m/s respectively, wheat seeds can be completely ripped into the soil and the emergence rate is more than 86%. The best pneumatic seeding effect achieved as incident angle is 90°. In order to realize wheat vertical pneumatic seeding in field operation, the horizontal component of pneumatic seeding velocity should be equal to the operating speed of seeder and the vertical component of pneumatic seeding velocity should be greater than 25 m/s, which the seeder operating speed shows positively and negatively correlated with pneumatic seeding velocity and incident angle, respectively. Earth pressure balance shield (EPBS) has become the mainstream construction method for metro tunnels in China, which inevitably generates a large amount of discharged soil, putting enormous pressure on the environment and the cost. In order to realize the resource utilization of shield dregs, this paper explored the feasibility of recycling the waste silty clay as a soil conditioner in EPBS tunnel construction. Mixtures of bentonite, wasted silty clay, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and tap water in different ratios were prepared. Defining the substituted ratio as the mass ratio of silty clay to (bentonite + silty clay), the effect of the substituted ratio on the apparent viscosity, flow curve, rheological model and physical stability of bentonite-silty clay composite slurry were investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between slurry microstructures and macroscopic rheological properties was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the constitutive relationship of bentonite slurry (0% substituted ratio) can be well described by Herschel-Bulkley model. The silty clay has a deteriorating effect on the rheological behavior and physical stability, and changes the flow pattern of the composite slurry. Microscopically, CMC makes the clay particles in slurries form agglomerates with larger particle sizes, and can absorb excess free water from the slurry, thus significantly increasing the yield stress and apparent viscosity. The recycling scheme proposed in this study can not only greatly reduce the procurement cost of raw materials, but also eliminate the transportation and disposal costs of discharged soil, which has significant environmental benefits and promising application prospects. Unraveling the distributions and controls of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) accumulation is conducive to providing guidance for sustainable ecosystem management. Although the factors that affect soil C and N accumulation have been widely investigated, the relative importance of these factors and whether they confer direct or indirect effects remain unclear. Herein, we examined the distributions of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil inorganic carbon (SIC), and total nitrogen (TN) stocks across the 0–200 cm soil profiles in grasslands, forestlands, and shrublands on the Loess Plateau. Moreover, we determined the relative contributions of land use, topography, and soil properties (texture, water, phosphorus, and available nitrogen) to their variations. The results showed that with increasing soil depth, SOC and TN stocks decreased, while SIC stocks fluctuated. However, large amounts of SOC, SIC, and TN were stored in the deep soil layers (100–200 cm), with values of 3.06, 26.63, and 0.50 kg/m2, respectively. In the 0–200 cm soil layers, the total SIC stock was 53.40 kg/m2 and was 6.8 times higher than the total SOC stock. Among different plant communities, grasslands had the highest SIC stock (54.83 kg/m2), while Armeniaca sibirica and Robinia pseudoacacia had the highest SOC stock (10.06 kg/m2) and TN stock (1.49 kg/m2), respectively. Furthermore, approximately 85% of the variations in SOC, SIC, and TN stocks were jointly affected by land use, topography, and soil properties, in which soil properties acted as the most important driving factors, followed by topography and land use. In particular, topography affected SOC, SIC, and TN stocks mainly through its effects on soil texture and water. Overall, vegetation restoration scenarios incorporating grasslands and Robinia pseudoacacia are highly recommended and should be tailored according to specific topographic features. • SIC stock was 6.8 times higher than SOC stock in the 0–200 cm soil layers. • Grasslands performed better in soil C accumulation than forests and shrubs. • Land use, soil property, and topography explained 80% of the changes in C and N. • Land use played a less important role in affecting C and N than topography. • Topography affected soil C and N accumulation by influencing soil clay and water. Results indicated that RGB values can effectively model background values of metals (p < 0.01). I geo and RI assessment showed that Cd was the primary pollutant, which showed no contamination to moderate contamination (I geo > 0) and moderate ecological risk (ecological risk factor > 40) in upper downstream of the river. Besides, Cd showed moderate to strong contamination (I geo > 2) and considerable ecological risk (ecological risk factor > 160) at site 24, which is located in the intersection of Poyang Lake and Yangtze River and strongly affected by natural erosion and human activities of Poyang Lake drainage. THQ assessment indicated low health risk of metals from consuming fish influenced by suspended sediment. RDA and VPA analysis indicated that explanation rate of land use composition, sediment property and landscape configuration on metals was 27.01–55.1 %, 36.66 %, 9.77 %-12.52 %, respectively. The total explanation rate was significantly higher at 1 km scale (82.5 %), which was mainly contributed by land use composition and its interaction with sediment property and landscape configuration (55.11 %). Specifically, percentage of farmland, grassland, wetland and forest, content of TN, TOC, silt and clay in soil and landscape configuration index of NumP were positively correlated with metals, and content of sand in soil and landscape index of MSI negatively correlated with metals in riparian sediment at different buffer scales. Abstract Local topography and elevation gradients can exert important influences on soil formation processes such as elemental migration, mineral weathering, and soil organic matter (SOM) accumulation, yet these influences remain insufficiently investigated to date, particularly in surface soils of subtropical monsoonal regions. Here, we report on an investigation of a series of surface soils collected from four different topographic locations across the subalpine Dajiuhu Critical Zone Observatory (CZO), representing hillslope (planar), swale and river channel (convergent), and bulge (divergent) microtopographic sites. Evidence provided by rare-earth element (REE) patterns, immobile element ratios, clay-mineral compositions, and particle-size distributions suggests that these soils have rather uniform parent materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that secondary clay minerals in these soils are complex, being dominated by various interstratified clays. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy shows similar patterns among the swale, bulge, and river-channel soils that differ from those of the hillslope soils. Most soils at convergent sites with poor drainage contain more smectitic clays (interstratified illite/smectite and chlorite/smectite) and less vermiculitic clays (hydroxyl-interlayered vermiculite and interstratified illite/hydroxyl-interlayered vermiculite), and exhibit weaker chemical weathering and fewer elemental losses than those from non-convergent sites. The diversity of clay types can be ascribed to the complexity and heterogeneity, in particular of pH and hydrology, in these soil environments. Across the range of microtopographic sites investigated here, elemental migration and chemical weathering are generally coupled, with greater elemental losses associated with more intense chemical weathering. Soil organic carbon (SOC) content generally increases at higher elevations, which is attributable to lower temperatures and a consequent reduction of microbial remineralization, and under more reducing soil water conditions. Though influenced by eolian dust, variations in Fe/Mn, Ce anomaly, and C org /P can reflect redox conditions of different soils. SOC retention is also closely associated with soil redox status, with more reducing conditions being more conducive to SOC preservation. Abstract The Song-Nen Plain in northeastern China holds one of the three largest expanses of soda saline-alkali soil in the world. Due to its disadvantageous geotechnical properties, the saline soil in this area is unable to meet the needs of construction projects. This study evaluates the stabilizing effect of adding lime to such soils. Specifically, it investigates how the physicochemical and mechanical properties and microstructure of soda saline-alkali soil are altered by lime and how these changes are affected by both freeze-thaw cycling and the duration of curing. The results reveal that adding lime to saline soil transforms clay particles into sand and silt particles and causes the pore size distribution (PSD) to become bimodal, with small-pore and macropore populations. An increase in lime content leads to an increase in the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) but a gradual decrease in both the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and plastic index. Freeze-thaw cycles break up coarse particles and aggregate finer particles, increasing the diameter of macropores and decreasing the USC; however, the effect on specimens with >9% lime is negligible. It is further shown that the geotechnical properties of the soil change immediately after the addition of lime, indicating that the cation exchange reaction takes place very quickly. Furthermore, the pozzolanic reaction leads to an increase in the percentage of sand-sized particles and a decrease in porosity after 28 days of curing. Overall, these results indicate that it is feasible to use lime to improve the engineering properties of soda saline-alkali soil in this area. In order to obtain the interaction parameters which can be used for discrete element simulation between the soil-engaging components and clayey black soil in northeast China, the Hertz-Mindlin with JKR Cohesion contact model in EDEM2.7 was used to simulate the clayey black soil. Aiming at the actual working environment with moisture content of 10%-20%, 2 kinds of clayey black soil with moisture content of 12.46%±1% and 17.15%±1% were prepared respectively. The rolling friction coefficient, recovery coefficient, JKR surface energy parameter and the static friction coefficient between the soil particles were used as the model calibrated parameters. The soil repose angle simulated under the simulation parameters was set as the response value. The regression model of the soil repose angle was established based on the Box-Behnken response surface method, and the regression model was optimized by using the soil repose angles under 2 moisture contents obtained by physical experiments. The optimal solution of the contact model parameters of the clayey black soil particles with 2 moisture contents was obtained. The parameter range of the discrete element contact model of clayey black soil with moisture content between 10%-20% were given. The soil repose angle and stacked shape obtained by the simulation experiment with the optimized solution had a high similarity with that of the physical test. At the same time, the static friction coefficients of 3 kinds of soil contact materials such as 65Mn plate, UHMW-PE plate and PTFE plate were tested under the conditions of 4 kinds of moisture content, which were 0, 12.46%, 17.15% and 23.5% respectively. Then for the 2 typical soil contact materials such as 65Mn and PTFE, the slope physical test bench were constructed for the clayey black soil with moisture content of 17.15%±1%. The slope simulation models of 65Mn and PTFE materials were established under the EDEM2.7 software platform. Based on the critical simulation parameters such as JKR surface energy parameter, static friction coefficient, rolling friction coefficient and recovery coefficient between soil particle and soil contact material, the simulated rolling distance of the soil ball on different soil contact materials was set as the response value. The excellent fit regression model of rolling distance for the 2 kinds of typical soil contact materials were established based on the response surface optimization method of Box-Behnkende. The 2 regression models were optimized by the sliding distance obtained by the physical experiment. Then the optimized solution of the contact model parameters of different materials was obtained. The simulation results showed that when the surface energy of JKR between soil and 65Mn was 5.5 J/m2, the recovery coefficient was 0.61, the static friction coefficient was 0.57 and the rolling friction coefficient was 0.056, the rolling distance simulation result was 153.56 mm, which was close to the average rolling distance obtained from physical experiments of 155.93 mm, and the relative error was 1.52%; When the surface energy of JKR between soil and PTFE was 4.08 J/m2, the recovery coefficient was 0.6, the static friction coefficient was 0.52 and the rolling friction coefficient was 0.045, the simulation result of rolling distance was 269.35 mm, which was close to the average rolling distance of 269.55 mm obtained from physical experiment, and the relative error was 0.07%. And the optimized parameters can be used to simulate the discrete parameters between the clayey black soil and the soil-engaging components. Slow- and controlled-release (SCR) nitrogen (N) fertilizers improve crop production and N utilization efficiency. However, responses of biological soil characteristics to the long-term application of N fertilizer have received little attention. In this work, a five-year field experiment was performed to assess the influence of different N fertilizer treatments (no N fertilizer application [CK] and applications of polymer-sulfur coated urea [PSCU], conventional prilled urea [PU], and urea-formaldehyde [UF]) on soil microbial communities in yellow clayey paddy soils in southern China. The types of N fertilizers had a stronger impact on soil bacterial diversity and community structure than fungal diversity and community structure. The soil microbial communities of PU and UF treatments did not differ from those of CK regarding alpha diversity indices. However, the PSCU treatment significantly decreased the Shannon index by 2.16% for bacteria but had no significant effect on the Shannon index of fungi. This might be due to the application of PSCU significantly reducing the soil pH by 0.16 units compared to CK and leading to soil acidification. Co-occurrence network analysis determined the keystone species mainly belonging to Proteobacteria and Ascomycota. Notably, these keystone species played an important role in PSCU-treated soils. Soil Ca2+, Na+, and NH 4 + were the main determinants of microbial network stability. Soil contamination by microplastics (MPs) has gained widespread attention, whose fate may be influenced by land use types. The effects of land use types and the intensity of human activities on the distribution and sources of soil MPs at the watershed scale are unclear. In this study, 62 surface soil sites in representing five land use types (urban, tea garden, dryland, paddy field and woodland) and 8 freshwater sediment sites were investigated in the Lihe River watershed. MPs were detected in all samples, and the average abundance of soil and sediments was 401.85 ± 214.02 and 222.13 ± 54.66 items/kg, respectively. The soil MPs abundance followed the sequence: urban > paddy field > dryland > tea garden > woodland. Soil MP distribution and MP communities were significant different (p < 0.05) among land use types. The similarity of MP community highly correlated with geographic distance, and woodlands and freshwater sediments may be a potential fate for MPs in the Lihe River watershed. Soil clay, pH, and bulk density significantly correlated with MP abundance and fragment shape (p < 0.05). The positive correlation between population density, Total- Point of Interest (POI) and MP diversity indicates the importance of intensity of human activities in exacerbating soil MP pollution (p < 0.001). Plastic waste sources accounted for 65.12%, 58.60%, 48.15% and 25.35% of MPs in urban, tea garden, dryland and paddy field soils, respectively. Differences in the intensity of agricultural activities and cropping patterns were associated with different percentages of mulching film sources in the three types of agricultural soils. This study provides new ideas for the quantitative analysis of soil MP sources in different land use types. • The response of soil water content (θg) to vegetation restoration mode varied highly. • θg increased with soil depth and the distance from the ephemeral gully (EG) head. • θg was less on EG top with artificial plant than on EG top with natural plant. • Natural succession is recommended to control soil erosion and maintain soil water. Vegetation restoration in an ephemeral gully (EG) can alter the traits of soil, vegetation, and microtopography, and therefore likely influences soil water. Nevertheless, few results have been reported regarding the response of soil water regime to vegetation restoration modes in EGs in semiarid region. This research was designed to clarify the spatial variation in soil water in an EG with different restoration modes on the Loess Plateau of China. For the selected EG, the two banks of ephemeral gully were well restored by natural succession and artificial planting. Soil water content (θg) was quantified on the ephemeral gully floor (F), natural successional restored ephemeral gully top (NT), and artificial planted restored ephemeral gully top (AT) in both the vertical and longitudinal directions. A sloping farmland was selected as the control. The results revealed that θg increased significantly with soil depth (i.e., 0–1 m) and the distance from the ephemeral gully head (i.e., 0–60 m). In the vertical direction, the mean θg of the six test points of the ephemeral gully floor was 1.1 to 1.2 times greater than that of the control in each soil layer, while the mean θg of the six test points of NT and AT decreased by 12.3 % to 15.6 % and 29.2 % to 29.9 % compared to the control in each soil layer. Along the longitudinal direction, the θg (i.e., 0–1 m soil layer) abided by the pattern of F > NT > AT. The difference in θg between the three ephemeral gully units and their variations in the vertical and longitudinal directions were mainly driven by the variations in soil clay content, bulk density, organic matter content, plant root density, plant litter density, and the distance from the ephemeral gully head.
