A recent study conducted by researchers at Tianjin University in China explored the potential of using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a type of yeast, as an oral vaccine for infectious bursal disease (IBD) in poultry. IBD is a highly infectious immunosuppressive disease that causes significant economic losses in the poultry industry. The researchers constructed a recombinant S. cerevisiae strain that expressed the capsid protein VP2 of the IBD virus and found that it elicited high levels of specific antibodies in mice, indicating potential efficacy in preventing IBDV infection.
