Several hundred meteorites with a total mass of over 100 kg were collected as the Alatage Mountain (AM) strewn field located in the Kumtag desert, Xinjiang Province, China. Twelve AM meteorites were studied in this work. Petrography, mineralogy, bulk chemistry, bulk oxygen isotopic compositions, and light noble gas concentrations and isotopic compositions were determined for all or for a selection of the meteorites. The studied meteorites are L‐chondrites that suffered a very strong impact; impact melt veins and melt pockets are widely distributed. More than 50% of the troilite exists in the form of blebs and veins in olivine and pyroxene. Some of these meteorites are impact melt recrystallized rocks (e.g., AM 037). The strong impact caused the decomposition of troilite, which led in AM 034 to the sulfidization reaction of olivine. The metal in most meteorites is almost completely altered, and the troilite has been significantly oxidized. Weathering resulted in the depletion of Mg, Fe, Co, and Ni, and the enrichment of Sr, Ba, Pb, and U in these meteorites. The cosmic ray exposure (CRE) ages measured for these specimens range between 6.2 ± 1.9 Ma and 9.0 ± 2.7 Ma, depending on the cosmogenic nuclide used. The average CRE age is 7.6 ± 1.3 Ma. Both 4He and 40Ar gas retention ages indicate that the strong impact which caused the shock effects occurred about 320 Ma ago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Distinct, non-mass-dependent 17O depletion was reported in barite from Marinoan cap dolostones (~635Ma) in South China, and has been interpreted as an indication of an extremely high-pCO2 atmosphere (Bao et al., 2008). There is a significant variation in the magnitude of the 17O anomaly even among samples from the same outcrops. Understanding the origins of this barite and particularly the source of sulfate is critical to interpreting the anomalous 17O signature and its implication on sulfur and oxygen cycles at the aftermath of Marinoan glacial meltdown. In this study, we analyzed 160 micro-sampled barite samples from 20 hand specimens collected from two cap dolostone sections in South China. Together with field, petrographic, and Sr isotope data, the expanded dataset 1) confirms the large variability in ∆17O (from −0.09‰ to −0.87‰, VSMOW), δ18O (+13.3‰ to +23.5‰, VSMOW), and δ34S (+20.0‰ to +45.5‰, VCDT) of barite; 2) demonstrates a hyperbolic relationship between the ∆17O and δ34S of various barite samples with more negative Δ17O values generally corresponding to lower δ34S values; 3) reveals that individual barite crystal fans and fans of the same layer possess a well-clustered set of δ18O, Δ17O, and δ34S values; and 4) shows, correspondingly, that barite crystal fans of different layers bear different sets of Δ17O, δ18O, and δ34S values. The study suggests that 17O-depleted barite crystals were formed under supersaturation when Ba2+ from sulfate-free deepwater came to mix with sulfate-bearing shallow water. There were multiple upwelling episodes which resulted in multiple barite layers. The large variability in sulfur and triple-oxygen isotope composition and the high 87Sr/86Sr ratios indicate that the two sites from South China were sufficiently close to the continent so that the isotopic composition of sulfate was easily influenced by changes in riverine flux when seawater sulfate concentration at that time was exceedingly low. Our depositional model for the barite is consistent with the proposed sequence of events after the meltdown of Marinoan glaciation in South China by Zhou et al. (2010), and is also consistent with the proposed atmospheric origin of sulfate 17O depletion by Bao et al. (2008). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Acritarchs from the Chuanlinggou Formation (ca. 1700Ma) were first reported by Xing and Liu (1973) [Xing, Y.S., Liu, G.Z., 1973. On Sinian micro-flora in Yenliao Region of China and its geological significance. Acta Geological Sinica 1, 1–64] and some were later described as eukaryotes by Yan (1982) [Yan, Y.Z., 1982. Schizofusa from the Chuanlinggou Fromation of Changzhougou System in Jixian county. Bulletin of the Tianjin Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources 6, 1–7]. The eukaryotic affinity has been questionable, however, for lack of indisputable morphological evidence. Chuanlinggou acritarchs are some of the oldest acritarchs found on Earth and are well preserved for ultrastructure study. In this study, Chuanlinggou acritarchs were examined by jointly using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In most cases, an ovoidal group of acritarchs represents a half vesicle following a complete longitudinal rupture, which is a morphological model different from a whole envelope with medial splits as proposed by earlier studies. This ovoidal group displays a bipolar morphology, longitudinal rupture, and occasionally striated wall structures that are consistent with a eukaryotic affinity. Thus, the Chuanlinggou ovoidal acritarchs probably extends the eukaryotes body fossil record into the Paleoproterozoic, ∼200 million years earlier than the morphologically more complex acritarchs from Mesoproterozoic Roper Group (ca. 1500Ma). The Neoproterozoic Quruqtagh Group in eastern Chinese Tianshan consists of, in ascending order, the Bayisi, Zhaobishan, Altungol, Tereeken, Zhamoketi, Yukkengol, Shuiquan, and Hankalchough Formations. Diamictite units occur in the Bayisi–Altungol, Tereeken, and Hankalchough Formations. Our field observations confirm the glacial origin of the Tereeken and Hankalchough diamictites, but the glacial origin of diamictites in the Bayisi and Altungol Formations remain ambiguous. While siliciclastic strata dominate the succession, carbonate units are recognized between the diamictites and immediately atop the Tereeken and Hankalchough diamictites. Carbonates in the Altungol Formation are characterized by highly positive δ13C values (up to +10.4‰ versus PDB), comparable to those of pre-Marinoan but post-Sturtian carbonates. High-resolution sampling of the pinkish cap dolostone (ca. 10 m-thick) overlying the Tereeken diamictite shows a consistent δ13C chemostratigraphic pattern (ca. −5‰ at the base and slightly decreasing upsection) similar to that of Marinoan cap carbonates. This cap dolostone is also characterized by macropeloids similar to those in the Marinoan-age Raventhroat cap carbonate, Mackenzie Mountains. Chemostratigraphic and sedimentary features are suggestive of a Marinoan age for the Tereeken glaciation. Thus, the younger Hankalchough diamictite may represent a post-Marinoan glaciation. This interpretation is consistent with the occurrence of vendotaenid fossils in the Shuiquan Formation. The alternative interpretation—the Tereeken and Hankalchough diamictites are, respectively, Sturtian and Marinoan in age—is not consistent with the above evidence or the chemostratigraphic features of the Shuiquan Formation and the Hankalchough cap carbonate. A post-Marinoan age for the Hankalchough and other glaciogenic deposits indicates that the disappearance of Doushantuo-type acritarchs and the subsequent radiation of macroscopic animals are closely linked, in geochronological terms, with a Neoproterozoic glaciation. Frequently occurred severe haze events in heavily populated China in recent years have beenattributed to extensive industrial and residential emissions, together with enhancedsecondary aerosol formation under stagnant meteorological condition, especially inwinter. Sulfate, as the major inorganic component of fine particles (PM2.5), has beenfound to form rapidly under high relative humidity conditions. Currently, a largegap exists in model-estimated sulfate concentration and field observation, withthe latter often being magnitudes higher. While model simulation is improving,multiple oxygen and sulfur isotopic compositions of atmospheric sulfate offer anindependent, often specific constraint on atmospheric secondary sulfate formationpathways. Here we report inorganic components, together with sulfur (δ34S) and triple-oxygenisotopes (δ18O, Δ17O) of sulfate in PM2.5 samples collected every 12 hours in the city ofBeijing, northern China in winter 2015. During the sampling period, PM2.5 concentrationwent up to as high as 178.9 ± 154.9 μg m−3. Sulfate had an average concentration of 20.9 ±20.9 μg m−3, with a mean δ34S values of 5.5±2.4‰ ranging from 1.3‰ to 9.4‰Ṫhe δ34Sis higher during heavily polluted days (average at 6.8‰) than that during relatively cleandays (average at 2.0‰). Meanwhile, the average sulfate Δ17O (Δ17O = δ18O -0.5305×δ17O) during heavy haze episodes was 0.62 ± 0.33‰ suggesting that aqueousoxidation pathway of S(IV)–H2O2 played a significant role on the enhanced sulfateformation during the evolution of haze episodes associated with fog processing. The estimated contribution of "primary" combustion sulfate to the total atmospheric sulfate flux is inconsistent, hindering our interpretation of the atmospheric "missing sulfate". We expect combustion sulfate to inherit the characteristic triple oxygen isotope composition of air O 2 to variable degrees. To test the hypothesis, we extracted sulfate from soot samples collected from 48 residential chimneys throughout China. The mean sulfate's Δ′17O 0.5305 and δ18O values are −0.27 ± 0.06‰ and 12.8 ± 3.6‰, respectively, and the Δ′17O 0.5305 and δ18O values correlate negatively and extend to air O 2 's triple oxygen isotope composition as an endmember, suggesting that combustion sulfate is generated dominantly by S(IV) multiphase oxidation via O 2 in the plume, with possible additional pathways through •OH in aqueous films or droplets and NO 2 at soot surface. Oxygen sources (i.e., air O 2 , fuel, ambient moisture) and oxidation kinetics determine the triple oxygen isotope composition of combustion sulfate. • Massively bedded barite (MBB) deposits occur mostly in Paleozoic sedimentary basins. • Sulfate-limited euxinic water is prone to be sulfate-free which accumulates hydrothermal Ba2+. • MBB deposits form when Ba2+-rich water encountering sulfate-bearing water. • Petrology, hyalophane, and δ 34 S and Sr isotope data support the new model. Existing models for massively bedded barite (MBB) deposits (e.g., sedimentary exhalative and diagenetic/ cold-seep) satisfy some geological and geochemical observations, but none explain the Paleozoic clustering of MBB deposits in Earth history. Here we bring seawater redox history into the picture and propose a sulfate-limited euxinic seawater (SLES) model where hydrothermally sourced Ba2+ accumulates as dissolved ion while other metal ions precipitate as insoluble metal sulfides. A subsequent encounter of this Ba2+-rich water mass with a sulfate-bearing one results in the deposition of MBB, thus physically separated from the accompanied metal sulfide deposits. We tested the SLES model using early Cambrian MBB deposits in South China through petrographic and isotope analyses. Syngenetic sphalerite and barite layers show a clear separation. A wide range of 87Sr/86Sr values (0.7082 to 0.7120) of the MBB supports a mixing of seawater and hydrothermal sources. A large range of δ 34 S values (32.2 to 61.1‰) of the MBB and the occurrence of mineral hyalophane supports an overall sulfate-limited but sulfate-concentration temporally and spatially heterogeneous ocean. Our model established the genetic link between MBB deposits and the accompanied metal sulfide deposits in the Paleozoic. The dearth of MBB deposits before and after the Paleozoic is due to widespread ferruginous oceans with little sulfate and complete oxygenated oceans with too much sulfate, respectively. Abstract: In order to understand spatial variations of stable isotope geochemistry in the Quruqtagh basin (northwestern China) in the aftermath of an Ediacaran glaciation, we analyzed carbonate carbon isotopes (δ 13 C carb), carbonate oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O carb), carbonate associated sulfate sulfur (δ 34 S CAS) and oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O CAS), and pyrite sulfur isotopes (δ 34 S py) of a cap dolostone atop the Ediacaran Hankalchough glacial diamictite at four sections. The four studied sections (YKG, MK, H and ZBS) represent an onshore–offshore transect in the Quruqtagh basin. Our data show a strong paleobathymetry-dependent isotopic gradient. From the onshore to offshore sections, δ 13 C carb values decrease from −2‰ to −16‰ (VPDB), whereas δ 18 O carb values increase from −4‰ to −1‰ (VPDB). Both δ 34 S CAS and δ 34 S py show stratigraphic variations in the two onshore sections (MK and YKG), but are more stable in the two offshore sections (H and ZBS). δ 18 O CAS values of onshore samples are consistent with terrestrial oxidative weathering of pyrite. We propose that following the Hankalchough glaciation seawater in the Quruqtagh basin was characterized by a strong isotopic gradient. The isotopic data may be interpreted using a three-component mixing model that involves three reservoirs: deep-basin water, surface water, and terrestrial weathering input. In this model, the negative δ 13 C carb values in the offshore sections are related to the upwelling of deep-basin water (where anaerobic oxidation of dissolved organic carbon resulted in 13 C-depleted DIC), whereas sulfur isotope variations are strongly controlled by surface water sulfate and terrestrial weathering input derived from oxidative weathering of pyrite. • Calcites precipitated from the solutions with identical chemical and isotopic compositions have different δ 13 C values. • The DBL thickness affects the pH and the δ 13 C value of HCO − 3 at the mineral-solution interface. • Our finding offers a mechanistic interpretation on the variability of the ε calcite / DIC in riverine or cave environments. It is often assumed that the carbon isotope composition (δ 13 C) of carbonate minerals records that of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) species with insignificant disequilibrium effect. However, results from field observations and laboratory experiments have shown that the δ 13 C difference between calcite and solution can vary up to 3‰ even under a similar set of solution composition and temperature, raising uncertainties on the δ 13 C's paleoclimate and paleoecology implications. One likely cause is the variable calcite precipitation rates and pH values induced by different thicknesses of the stagnant liquid layer between solid and well mixed bulk solution (i.e., diffusion boundary layer, DBL). To test this hypothesis, we selected a well-studied natural travertine deposit (Baishuitai, SW China) which consists of meter-scale travertine terraces. Calcite crystals at both the pool bottom and the rim of the terraces are inorganically precipitated from solutions identical in chemical, isotopic composition and temperature, but different only in hydrodynamics. This difference results in thicker DBL for water at the pool-bottom than for water flowing across the rim. We found that the δ 13 C and Mg/Ca ratios are higher while Sr/Ca ratios are lower for the pool-bottom calcites than for the rim calcites. By applying a mass transfer model, we quantitatively link the differences in carbon isotope and elemental compositions of the abiogenic calcites to the different hydrodynamic conditions. The inverse variation in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios in calcites arises from the different precipitation rates between at the pool-bottom and at the rim, while the consistently lower δ 13 C for calcites at the rim is due to their higher pH at the solid-solution interface than for calcites precipitated at the pool-bottom. In contrast, calcite precipitation rate has little influence on carbon isotope fractionation between calcite and HCO − 3 . Our results demonstrate the role of DBL thickness in governing the δ 13 C of HCO − 3 at mineral surface, which can assist to interpret the variable δ 13 C values of calcites in riverine or cave environments. Abstract: To improve our knowledge about the geochemical and environmental aftermath of Neoproterozoic global glaciations, we analyzed stable isotopes (δ 13C, δ 18O, δ 34S) and elemental concentrations (Ca, Mg, S, Sr, Fe, and Mn) of the ∼10-m-thick Zhamoketi cap dolostone atop the Tereeken diamictite in the Quruqtagh area, eastern Chinese Tianshan. Available chemostratigraphic data suggest that the Tereeken diamictite is probably equivalent to the Marinoan glaciation. Our new data indicate that organic and carbonate carbon isotopes of the Zhamoketi cap dolostone show little stratigraphic variations, averaging −28.2‰ and −4.6‰, respectively. In contrast, sulfur isotopes show significant stratigraphic variations. Carbonate associated sulfate (CAS) abundance decreases rapidly in the basal cap dolostone and δ 34SCAS composition varies between +9‰ and +15‰ in the lower 2.5 m. In the overlying interval, CAS abundance remains low while δ 34SCAS rises ∼5‰ and varies more widely between +10‰ and +21‰. The range of δ 34Spy of the cap dolostone overlaps with that of δ 34SCAS, but direct comparison shows that δ 34Spy is typically greater than δ 34SCAS measured from the same samples. Hypotheses to explain the observations must account for both the remarkable sulfur isotope enrichment of pyrites and the inverse fractionation. We propose that CAS and pyrite were derived from two isotopically distinct reservoirs in a chemically stratified basin or a basin with a sulfate minimum zone. In this model, CAS was derived from shallow, oxic surface waters with moderate sulfate concentration and depleted in 34S due to the post-glacial influx of sulfur from continental weathering. In contrast, pyrite was derived from anoxic bottom waters (or a sulfate minimum zone) with low sulfate concentration and 34S enrichment due to long-term syn-glacial sulfate reduction. The rapid shift in CAS abundance and sulfur isotope composition within the cap dolostone is interpreted to reflect the mixing of the two reservoirs after initial deglaciation. Comparison with other post-Marinoan cap carbonates shows significant spatial heterogeneity in δ 34SCAS, which together with strong temporal variation in δ 34SCAS, points to generally low sulfate concentrations in post-Marinoan oceans. The ~635 Ma Marinoan glaciation is marked by dramatic Earth system perturbations. Deposition of nonmass-dependently (17)O-depleted sulfate (SO4(2-)) in worldwide postglacial sediments is, thus far, unique to this glaciation. It is proposed that an extremely high-pCO2 atmosphere can result in highly (17)O-depleted atmospheric O2, or the Marinoan Oxygen-17 Depletion (MOSD) event. This anomalous (17)O signal was imparted to sulfate of oxidative weathering origin. However, (17)O-depleted sulfate occurs in limited sedimentary intervals, suggesting that Earth surface conditions conducive to the MOSD had a finite duration. An MOSD duration can, therefore, provide much needed constraint on modeling Earth system responses at that time. Unfortunately, the sulfate (17)O record is often sparse or lacks radiometric dates. Here, we report 11 barite layers from a post-Marinoan dolostone sequence at Wushanhu in the South China Block. The (17)O depletion fluctuates in magnitude in lower layers but is persistently absent up section, providing the most confident first and last sedimentary appearance of the anomaly. δ(13)C chemostratigraphy is used to correlate the Wushanhu section to two proximal sections on the same shallow platform that lack barite layers but have published U-Pb dates that occur in dolostone and shale. Assuming a similar pattern and rate for carbonate and shale deposition among the different sections, we estimate the MOSD duration at 0-0.99 My. This number can be further constrained by new radiometric dates from equivalent sequences worldwide, thus underpinning models on the nonsteady-state Earth system response in the immediate aftermath of the Marinoan meltdown.

Abundant graphite particles occur in amphibolite-grade quartzite of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Wutai Metamorphic Complex in the Wutaishan area of North China. Petrographic thin section observations suggest that the graphite particles occur within and between quartzite clasts and are heterogeneous in origin. Using HF maceration techniques, the Wutai graphite particles were extracted for further investigation. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis of a population of extracted graphite discs indicated that they experienced a maximum metamorphic temperature of 513 +/- 50 degrees C, which is consistent with the metamorphic grade of the host rock and supports their indigenicity. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the particles bear morphological features (such as hexagonal sheets of graphite crystals) related to metamorphism and crystal growth, but a small fraction of them (graphite discs) are characterized by a circular morphology, distinct marginal concentric folds, surficial wrinkles, and complex nanostructures. Ion microprobe analysis of individual graphite discs showed that their carbon isotope compositions range from -7.4 per thousand to -35.9 per thousand V-PDB (Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite), with an average of -20.3 per thousand, which is comparable to bulk analysis of extracted carbonaceous material. The range of their size, ultrastructures, and isotopic signatures suggests that the morphology and geochemistry of the Wutai graphite discs were overprinted by metamorphism and their ultimate carbon source probably had diverse origins that included abiotic processes. We considered both biotic and abiotic origins of the carbon source and graphite disc morphologies and cannot falsify the possibility that some circular graphite discs characterized by marginal folds and surficial wrinkles represent deflated, compressed, and subsequently graphitized organic-walled vesicles. Together with reports by other authors of acanthomorphic acritarchs from greenschist-amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks, this study suggests that it is worthwhile to examine carbonaceous materials preserved in highly metamorphosed rocks for possible evidence of ancient life.
