Background: Globally, adolescent depression is prevalent. There is, however, a dearth of studies investigating behavioral intention to professional help-seeking regarding mental health problems among adolescents having probable depression. Based on the Stress Coping Theory, the hypothesis that personal resources and active coping would mediate between interpersonal resources and behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was investigated., Methods: Students from five junior middle schools, three senior high schools, and one vocational school were selected to participate in the survey from February to March 2022 via convenient sampling. The questionnaire collected participants' characteristics, depression, peer acceptance/support, resilience, self-compassion, active coping, and behavioral intention to professional help-seeking. The final sample included 1,425 Chinese adolescents having probable depression (Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥ 10). SPSS 23.0 and Mplus 8.3 were employed to analyze the data., Results: The prevalence of behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was 15.4%. Adjusted for background factors, peer acceptance, resilience, self-compassion, and active coping were significantly associated with behavioral intention to professional help-seeking (ORa ranged from 1.05 to 1.31). The indirect effects via active coping (β = 0.020) and a serial indirect effect via personal resources and active coping (β = 0.029) were statistically significant. The direct effect from interpersonal resources to behavioral intention to professional help-seeking was non-significant., Conclusion: The prevalence of behavioral intention to professional help-seeking among adolescents with probable depression was low and might render early detection/intervention ineffective. Background: The association between problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) and negative emotions in university students is not well understood in terms of causality and directionality. This study aims to clarify whether negative emotions trigger PMPU or whether the PMPU itself leads to increased negative emotions over time., Methods: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted involving 5568 Chinese freshmen who were surveyed at baseline and followed up after one academic year. PMPU, social media use, online game use, fear of missing out, loneliness, social anxiety, and academic burnout were measured. Cross-sectional and longitudinal connections between these variables were examined using network analysis techniques., Results: The variable with the strongest influence in both contemporaneous networks was "Productivity loss" of MAPI. Moreover, "Academic burnout" at baseline significantly predicted higher levels of problematic smartphone use and negative emotions at follow-up, suggesting that it may serve as a catalyst for addictive tendencies. Furthermore, we observed bidirectional relationships between "Escapism" and "Social anxiety", as well as between "Social anxiety" and "Inability to control craving", suggesting a potential self-perpetuating cycle., Conclusion: These findings highlight the role of academic burnout in initiating cycles of PMPU and negative emotions. In order to effectively tackle PMPU, it is crucial to consider the underlying drivers such as academic burnout and emotional states. The Self-regulatory Executive Function model elucidates how metacognitions link to the development and maintenance of gambling disorder, however whether, and how, metacognitions explain responsible gambling remains unknown. This study is the first to address this knowledge gap by: (a) examining whether both generic and gambling-specific metacognitions explain variances in responsible gambling; and (b) testing the mediating role of depression between generic/gambling-specific metacognitions and responsible gambling. A two-stage cluster random sampling method was used to obtain a probability sample of 837 Chinese adult gamblers (48.5 % men, mean age = 41.11, SD = 14.31) in Macao, China. Hierarchical regression analysis indicated that gambling-specific metacognitions contributed to an additional 23 % variance explained in responsible gambling after considering generic metacognitions and demographics. Path analysis further showed that the direct paths from generic, positive and negative gambling-specific metacognitions to responsible gambling were all significant while the positive type showing a stronger effect. Moreover, depression partially mediated the effects of both generic and gambling-specific metacognitions on responsible gambling. Independent identification of carbon emission peaks determined from fuel inventories is a challenging goal. Because of the complete depletion of radiocarbon ( 14 C) in fossil fuel sources, the measurement of atmospheric 14 CO 2 has proven to offer a means of achieving this goal. Here, we present a study identifying peak carbon emissions from two Chinese cities using urban tree-ring Δ 14 C time series during 2000-2019. After subtracting background atmospheric Δ 14 C from urban tree-ring Δ 14 C to isolate local Δ 14 C (Δ 14 C local ), we find a minimum in 2010 (-51.1 ± 4.5‰) in Beijing and in 2013 in Xi'an (-52.5 ± 0.5‰). These levels correspond to an urban carbon emission peak in 2010 and in 2013 in the two respective cities. The urban carbon emission peaks are further identified by the declines of the mean absolute interannual rate of decrease of tree-ring Δ 14 C during a period, with the respective values of 3.6 and 6.4 ‰/yr after and before a turning point in Beijing and 3.0 and 6.0 ‰/yr after and before a turning point in Xi'an. This study provides an observation method to identify carbon emission peaks in basin cities.

Desire thinking, within the metacognitive model of addictive behaviors, is conceptualized as a transdiagnostic process linked to the escalation and maintenance of craving for various addictive disorders; however, its application to the understanding of gambling and the Chinese community remains at an early stage. The present study aimed to introduce desire thinking into gambling research in the Chinese context by: (1) testing the applicability of its two-factor conceptualization and assessment tool, the Desire Thinking Questionnaire (DTQ), and (2) exploring its association with dysregulated and regulated engagements in gambling (i.e., Gambling Disorder [GD] and responsible gambling [RG], respectively). We conducted a telephone survey in Macao, China, and obtained a probability sample of 837 Chinese adult past-year gamblers (48.5% men; age: M = 41.11, SD = 14.31) with a two-stage cluster random sampling method. Our data indicated the psychometric adequacy of the two-factor DTQ (i.e., verbal perseveration and imaginal prefiguration) for measuring Chinese gamblers' desire thinking about gambling. After controlling for craving and demographics, desire thinking contributed to an additional 12.1% and 18.9% variance explained in GD tendency and RG behaviors, respectively. This study provides the first empirical evidence of the utility of desire thinking and the DTQ in facilitating gambling research on Chinese gamblers. As the number of coastal nuclear facilities rapidly increases and the wastewater from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant has been discharged into the Pacific Ocean, the nuclear environmental safety of China's marginal seas is gaining increased attention along with the heightened potential risk of nuclear accidents. However, insufficient work limits our understanding of the impact of human nuclear activities on the Yellow Sea (YS) and the assessment of their environmental process. This study first reports the 129 I and 127 I records of posthuman nuclear activities in the two YS sediments. Source identification of anthropogenic 129 I reveals that, in addition to the gaseous 129 I release and re-emission of oceanic 129 I discharged from the European Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Plants (NFRPs), the Chinese nuclear weapons testing fallout along with the global fallout is an additional 129 I input for the continental shelf of the YS. The 129 I/ 127 I atomic ratios in the North YS (NYS) sediment are significantly higher than those in the other adjacent coastal areas, attributed to the significant riverine input of particulate 129 I by the Yellow River. Furthermore, we found a remarkable 129 I latitudinal disparity in the sediments than those in the seawaters in the various China seas, revealing that sediments in China's marginal seas already received a huge anthropogenic 129 I from terrigenous sources via rivers and thus became a significant sink of anthropogenic 129 I. This study broadens an insight into the potential impacts of terrigenous anthropogenic pollution on the Chinese coastal marine radioactive ecosystem.

Shaanxi Province is located in the most important molybdenum ore district in the world, but a lot of molybdenum tailings have been released, polluting the environment and wasting resources seriously. Taking eleven tailing samples collected at the main molybdenum tailings ponds in Shaanxi Province as the research object, the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics were studied through scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and others. The ecological risk and utilization potential of molybdenum tailings were investigated through leaching test, geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk assessment, and other methods. The results demonstrated that the main chemical and mineralogical composition of various molybdenum tailings in Shaanxi Province is similar, and the predominant mineral composition is muscovite, quartz, microcline, and calcite. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in six molybdenum tailings is high, while Pb and Cd are the main pollution risk elements. Molybdenum tailings contain considerable amounts of critical minerals with huge potential economic value, and molybdenum tailings with high environmental hazards could be converted into a possible source for critical minerals by recovering the critical minerals and repurposing the secondary tailings as an additive or cement substitute. Owning to the high radiotoxicity in high concentrations, as well as the irreplaceability in quantifying soil erosion rates, demarcating the Anthropocene, and dating of sediment, anthropogenic 239,240 Pu have drawn high attention. However, the source in specific areas, preservation characteristics in different environment media, and re-distribution process after the cessation of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, have not been fully understood, which obscures the exact start year, temporal variation, and deposition flux of 239,240 Pu in sedimentary records, and hinders the wide application of 239,240 Pu in environment study. A sediment core from the Yiwu peat bog with dominance of atmospheric deposition in the source material, simple sedimentary environment, and high dust deposition flux, was collected to examine the 239,240 Pu, and explore the source, preservation, and re-distribution process. The double peaks of 239,240 Pu in 1952 CE and 1963 CE, as well as 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratios of 0.163-0.190 with an average of 0.177 ± 0.010 confirmed that the 239,240 Pu source originated predominantly from global fallout. The minimal vertical migration of plutonium in the Yiwu peat core was attributed to the near-neutral pH condition. The high inventory of 128 ± 7 Bq m -2 , as well as the atypical negative correlation between 239,240 Pu concentrations and organic matter content (r = - 0.79, P < 0.01), was attributed to the contribution of 239,240 Pu re-suspended with dust from the neighboring Gobi Desert, particularly in the cold and dry years. The total re-suspended 239,240 Pu was estimated to be 77 Bq m -2 , exceeding the direct fallout level of 51 Bq m -2 during 1945-2016 CE. Vertical observations of atmospheric pollutants play crucial roles in a comprehensive understanding of the distribution characteristics and transport of atmospheric pollutants. A hexacopter uncrewed aerial vehicle equipped with miniature monitors was employed to measure the vertical distribution of atmospheric pollutants within a height of 1000 m at a rural site in Xi'an, China, in 2021. The concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM) showed generally decreasing trends with increasing height. The ozone (O 3 ) concentration showed a general increasing trend with height followed by a gradual decreasing trend. Vertical decrements of PM 2.5 and CO from 0 to 1000 m were significantly ( p < 0.05) lower on observation days during summer (14.0 ± 8.1 μg m -3 and 8.7 ± 6.6 ppb, respectively), compared with those in winter (78.3 ± 14.1 μg m -3 and 34.8 ± 17.3 ppb, respectively). The horizontal transport of PM and CO mostly occurred in the morning and at night during winter observations at an altitude of 400-500 m. During the winter haze, the PM and CO profile concentrations below 500 m increased substantially with the decrease in the height of the thermal inversion layer. Vertical O 3 transportation was observed in the afternoon and evening during summer, and a ∼37.7% (11.6 ppb) increase in ground-level O 3 was observed in relation to vertical transport from the upper atmosphere. The results provide insights into the vertical distribution and transport of atmospheric pollutants in rural areas near cities.

Dust is an important source of atmospheric pollution, and quantitative estimation of desert dust transport is crucial for air pollution control. In this study, five typical sandy soil profiles in the Tengger Desert were collected and analyzed for 239,240 Pu concentration and 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios in order to identify the source of 239,240 Pu in this area and explore the sedimentary characteristics of dust in different profiles. The results revealed that the concentrations of 239,240 Pu in the soil profiles were between 0.002 and 0.443 mBq/g with an exception of the deep layer soil at one site. The measured atomic ratios of 240 Pu/ 239 Pu are at the global atmospheric fallout level with a mean of 0.184 ± 0.020, indicating that global fallout is the dominant source of plutonium in this region. The total inventories of 239,240 Pu in the reference sites in this area were estimated to be 39.2-44.6 Bq/m 2 , this is in agreement with the value from the global fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapon tests at the similar latitude (30-40 °N: 42 Bq/m 2 ). The estimated erosion rate in the erosion profile utilizing soil erosion intensity mode is 2491 t/km 2 /yr and the soil erosion depth is 9.86 cm, While, the stacking rate of the accumulation profile is 1383 t/km 2 /yr, and the depth of accumulation is estimated to be 5.48 cm. Aims: To examine the effectiveness of Self-Help Plus (SH+) as an intervention for alleviating stress levels and mental health problems among healthcare workers., Methods: This was a prospective, two-arm, unblinded, parallel-designed randomised controlled trial. Participants were recruited at all levels of medical facilities within all municipal districts of Guangzhou. Eligible participants were adult healthcare workers experiencing psychological stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale scores of ≥15) but without serious mental health problems or active suicidal ideation. A self-help psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization in alleviating psychological stress and preventing the development of mental health problems. The primary outcome was psychological stress, assessed at the 3-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes were depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, insomnia, positive affect (PA) and self-kindness assessed at the 3-month follow-up., Results: Between November 2021 and April 2022, 270 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to either SH+ ( n = 135) or the control group ( n = 135). The SH+ group had significantly lower stress at the 3-month follow-up ( b = -1.23, 95% CI = -2.36, -0.10, p = 0.033) compared to the control group. The interaction effect indicated that the intervention effect in reducing stress differed over time ( b = -0.89, 95% CI = -1.50, -0.27, p = 0.005). Analysis of the secondary outcomes suggested that SH+ led to statistically significant improvements in most of the secondary outcomes, including depression, insomnia, PA and self-kindness., Conclusions: This is the first known randomised controlled trial ever conducted to improve stress and mental health problems among healthcare workers experiencing psychological stress in a low-resource setting. SH+ was found to be an effective strategy for alleviating psychological stress and reducing symptoms of common mental problems. SH+ has the potential to be scaled-up as a public health strategy to reduce the burden of mental health problems in healthcare workers exposed to high levels of stress.

Background: Despite the practical importance of addressing the drug user's sleep problems to enhance the efficacy of treatment and rehabilitation, little is known about whether and how history of childhood maltreatment relates to this issue. This study takes an evolutionary perspective to investigate the associations between history of childhood maltreatment and sleep problems in adults with drug abuse via their emotion regulation difficulties, future-oriented coping, and anxiety. Methods: Participants were 604 male adults with drug abuse between the ages of 18-58 years ( M  = 36.20, SD  = 8.17) in a drug rehabilitation centre in China. In addition to bivariate correlation analysis, path analysis was conducted to examine goodness-of-fit of the conceptual model, controlling for the effect of demographic characteristics. Results: Thirty-two percent of participants ( n  = 194) reported poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5), whereas sleep disturbance (81.3%), daytime dysfunction (77.3%), and sleep latency (66.5%) were the three most common problems among them. Correlation analysis supported the hypothesised positive correlations between poor sleep quality and childhood maltreatment, emotion regulation difficulties, and anxiety, and a negative correlation with future-oriented coping. Results of path analysis showed a significant indirect effect of childhood maltreatment on sleep problems via both emotion regulation difficulties and anxiety, whereas such effects via both future-oriented coping and anxiety were statistically nonsignificant. Conclusions: The findings suggest life history theory is applicable to understanding drug users' sleep problems, and interventions regarding both emotion regulation difficulties and anxiety can lessen the risk posed by childhood maltreatment on sleep problems.

Radiocarbon ( 14 C), stable carbon isotope ( 13 C), and levoglucosan in PM 2.5 were measured in two northern Chinese cities during haze events and nonhaze periods in January 2019, to ascertain the sources and their differences in carbonaceous aerosols between the two periods. The contribution of primary vehicle emissions (17.8 ± 3.7%) to total carbon in Beijing during that haze event was higher than that of primary coal combustion (7.3 ± 4.2%), and it increased significantly (7.1%) compared to the nonhaze period. The contribution of primary vehicle emissions (4.1 ± 2.8%) was close to that of primary coal combustion (4.3 ± 3.3%) during the haze event in Xi'an, and the contribution of primary vehicle emissions decreased by 5.8% compared to the nonhaze period. Primary biomass burning contributed 21.1 ± 10.5% during the haze event in Beijing and 40.9 ± 6.6% in Xi'an (with an increase of 3.3% compared with the nonhaze period). The contribution of secondary fossil fuel sources to total secondary organic carbon increased by 29.2% during the haze event in Beijing and by 18.4% in Xi'an compared to the nonhaze period. Anthropogenic 129 I, as a long-lived fission product and volatile radionuclide, can be used to investigate dispersion of air masses and the deposition of atmospheric pollution. Surface soil and soil core samples were collected from Northern Xinjiang and analyzed for 127 I and 129 I. The results show that 129 I/ 127 I atomic ratios in surface soil are inhomogeneous with a range of (2.07-106) × 10 -9 , and the maximum values in each soil core occurred at surface-subsurface layers (0-15 cm) at undisturbed sites. The dominant source of 129 I in Northern Xinjiang is European nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (NFRP) releases, accounting for at least 70% of the total inventory; less than 20% of 129 I originates from the global fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests; less than 10% comes from the regional deposition of nuclear weapons tests at the Semipalatinsk site; and the regional deposition from the nuclear weapons tests at the Lop Nor site is insignificant. The European NFRP-derived 129 I was transported to Northern Xinjiang via long-distance atmospheric dispersion with the westerlies through Northern Eurasia. The distribution of 129 I in the surface soil in Northern Xinjiang is mainly controlled by topography, wind fields, land utilization, and vegetation coverage.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants, and limited research has focused on their exposure to terrestrial wildlife and transport mode on the remote Tibetan Plateau (TP). Therefore, we investigated MPs in the southern soil and feces of Equus kiang (Tibetan wild ass), a species peculiar to the TP, which is known as the "third pole." We found that MP median abundances were 102 and 4.01 particles/g of dry feces and soil, respectively. In both media, the MP morphology mainly comprised ∼50 μm slender fibrous particles. In total, 29 MP types were identified in the feces, compared to 26 types in the soil. Among them, the acrylate copolymer (35.9%) and polyurethane (24.9%) were predominant in the feces, while polyurethane (22.5%) and silicone (20.4%) were predominant in the soil. After ingesting MPs at one location, E. kiang may become a source of MP pollution when moving to other meadows on the TP. The potential MP transport flux of a herd of 20 kiangs has been estimated at 1736 particles m -2 a -1 . A unique "source-sink-source" MP transport model comprising an "atmospheric deposition-vegetation-feces-atmosphere" cycle on the TP was observed based on atmospheric transport simulations and terrestrial food chain transfer processes. Owing to human settlements in south and East Asia adjacent to the TP, atmospheric long-distance transmission is an essential route for MPs to enter the TP.

Introduction: Burnout in healthcare providers (HPs) might lead to negative consequences at personal, patient-care and healthcare system levels especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of burnout and the contributing variables, and to explore how, from health workforce management perspective, HPs' experiences related to carrying out COVID-19 duties would be associated with their burnout., Methods: A cross-sectional, open online survey, informed by physical and psychological attributes reportedly related to burnout, the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), was completed by HPs in Macau, China during October and December 2021. Factors associated with burnout were analysed using multiple logistic regressions., Results: Among the 498 valid responses, the participants included doctors (37.5%), nurses (27.1%), medical laboratory technologist (11.4%) and pharmacy professionals (10.8%), with the majority being female (66.1%), aged between 25-44years (66.0%), and participated in the COVID-19 duties (82.9%). High levels of burnout (personal (60.4%), work-related (50.6%) and client-related (31.5%)), anxiety (60.6%), and depression (63.4%) were identified. Anxiety and depression remained significantly and positively associated with all types of burnout after controlling for the strong effects of demographic and work factors (e.g. working in the public sector or hospital, or having COVID-19 duties). HPs participated in COVID-19 duties were more vulnerable to burnout than their counterparts and were mostly dissatisfied with the accessibility of psychological support at workplace (62.6%), workforce distribution for COVID-19 duties (50.0%), ability to rest and recover (46.2%), and remuneration (44.7%), all of which were associated with the occurrence of burnout., Conclusions: Personal, professional and health management factors were found attributable to the burnout experienced by HPs during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring actions from individual and organizational level. Food addiction is associated with both physical and mental health conditions, such as obesity and depression, and is considered a public health problem. Based on life history (LH) theory, this study aimed to test the association between unpredictable childhood environment and food addiction in adulthood and to examine LH strategies and attitudes toward self as psychological mediators of this association. A random sample of 1010 adults, aged from 18 to 88 years (44.8% male; M age  = 38.52, SD age  = 14.53), voluntarily participated in an anonymous telephone survey conducted in Macao, China. The results of a path analysis showed the significant and positive direct effect of childhood unpredictability on food addiction and its negative association with slow LH strategy, which in turn was negatively correlated with food addiction. In addition, slow LH strategy and self-judgment, rather than self-kindness, acted as serial mediators in the association between childhood unpredictability and food addiction. These findings support the applicability of LH theory to understanding food addiction, as well as pointing to the potential risk effect of self-judgment for food addiction in adulthood. The source, vertical distribution and migration behavior of plutonium in five soil profiles (from forest, grassland and desert areas) in northern China were investigated. The average 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratio of 0.184 ± 0.022 observed in these samples is in good agreement with the reported value of global fallout, suggesting that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in northern China. The 239,240 Pu inventories in five soil profiles ranges from 43.3 Bq/m 2 to 175 Bq/m 2 , lying in the reported range for global fallout in the similar latitude band. The effective convection velocity (0.04-0.16 cm/y) and effective dispersion coefficient (0.13-0.41cm 2 /y) of plutonium in different soil profiles derived using the CDE model varies significantly, attributed to multi-factors including location, topography, climate and soil types. School climate and school identification are two distinct yet closely interrelated components of school environment; both are associated with adolescents' multiple health behavioral changes. The 15-item Abbreviated version of the Dual School Climate and School Identification Measure-Student (SCASIM-St15) and its 5-factor model simultaneously and separately assess these two constructs. This study validated the Chinese version of SCASIM-St15 among 1108 students from junior middle schools, senior middle schools, and vocational high schools in Taizhou city, Zhejiang, China, via an anonymous, self-administered cross-sectional survey. Confirmatory factor analysis supports the 5-factor model of the original SCASIM-St15 with a satisfactory model fit. Its four factors (i.e., student-student relations, staff-student relations, academic emphasis, and shared values and approach) assess school climate; its fifth factor assesses school identification. The subscales of the SCASIM-St15 demonstrate good psychometric properties, including measurement invariance (across sex and school type), good internal consistency, an absence of floor effect, and good external validity with four external variables (depression, peer victimization, classmate support, and teacher-student relationship). However, some substantial ceiling effects were observed. The five subscales differ significantly across the school types but not between males and females. The validated SCASIM-St15 can be applied to simultaneously understand school climate/school identification among Chinese adolescents, which may greatly facilitate future related observational and intervention research.

Quantifying fossil fuel CO 2 (CO 2ff ) in the atmosphere provides a benchmark method to monitor anthropogenic carbon emissions. Radiocarbon ( 14 C) in atmospheric CO 2ff has been widely studied using the 14 C in plants to document regional CO 2ff patterns. However, annual CO 2ff variations, reflecting spatial distributions based on plant samples, are still scarce. In this paper, the spatial distribution and temporal CO 2ff changes in the Guanzhong Basin is established using Δ 14 C measurements from maize leaves collected in 2011 and 2012. With regard to spatial distribution, samples collected around Xi'an City showed lower Δ 14 C values (more CO 2ff ), while sites located near the perimeter of the basin showed higher Δ 14 C values (less CO 2ff ). This is likely due to the concentration of anthropogenic activities in the center of the Guanzhong Basin. The observed CO 2ff mole fractions generally matched with PKU CO 2 inventory and the ODIAC CO 2 inventory data in the spatial distribution trend. However, it seems that thermal power plants were not well captured by the PKU CO 2 inventory. Objectives: Adolescent gambling is a public health concern of increasing importance. The lack of comprehensive evaluations on adolescent gambling disorder (GD) assessment tools hinders the timely detection of Chinese adolescents with gambling problems. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents (SOGS-RA) and determine its optimal screening cutoff score among Chinese adolescent gamblers to address this gap. Methods: We surveyed 1407 Chinese secondary school students aged 11-19 years in Macao, China, among which 258 past-year gamblers' data was used for assessing SOGS-RA's performance in detecting risk for adolescent GD. Results: SOGS-RA displayed satisfactory reliability and validity for assessing probable GD among Chinese adolescent gamblers. Under the DSM-5 GD framework, we proposed ≥4 as SOGS-RA's optimal cutoff score of screening for probable GD and further identified 5.8% of past-year gamblers prone to probable GD in the present study. Objectives: The rapid increase in Chinese obesity rates has aroused research interest in addiction-like eating (AE); however, the unavailability of assessment tools is a major barrier to further investigation. To address the research gap, this study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Addiction-like Eating Behavior Scale (AEBS) and explore associations between AE and three modern eating-related habits (i.e., ordering delivery food, eating late-night meals and watching mukbang) among Chinese adults., Methods: The STROBE checklist was followed for reporting this cross-sectional study. We conducted a telephone survey with a two-stage cluster random sampling method and acquired a probability sample of 1010 community-dwelling Chinese adults (55.2% female; age: 18-88 years, M = 38.52, SD = 14.53)., Results: Results confirmed the conceptualized two-factor structure of AEBS with satisfactory model fit, reliability and validity. Chinese adults reported higher levels of AE in the context of low dietary control rather than appetitive drive. These two AE factors showed significant and positive associations with modern eating-related habits., Conclusions: The current study was the first to assess AE among Chinese adults and provided a reliable and valid assessment tool. Our correlational findings can also be utilized for designing interventions for weight management and healthy eating.

Anthropogenic 129 I has been dispersed all over the world and could be utilized as an oceanographic tracer based on its conservative nature in the ocean. The first datasets of 129 I and 127 I were obtained by analysis of seawater of 36 water columns collected in the western South China Sea during August-September 2018. The measured 129 I concentrations decreased with depth from (0.93-1.61) × 10 7 atoms/L in the upper 200 m to (0.04-0.14) × 10 7 atoms/L at 1500 m, indicating a clear anthropogenic source in the upper layer, mainly originated from the global fallout. The riverine input of the deposited 129 I on the catchment area of the Mekong River is an important source besides the direct deposition in the seas. The water mass with high 129 I from the Mekong River water moves to the east at 11°N by the North Nansha Current in the surface layer (2-25 m). The exponentially decreasing 129 I level with depth indicates that the vertical dispersion of 129 I from the upper to the lower layer was mainly through slow diffusion, and the deep water at more than 1500 m was not significantly contaminated by the upper layer water at least in the past 70 years.

With the largest online gamer population worldwide and a heightened rate of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), China has a long-lasting need to identify salient correlates of IGD and provide corresponding assessment tools to support cost-effective IGD screening and interventions. To respond to such a need, the present study aimed to validate the Metacognitions about Online Gaming Scale (MOGS) among Chinese gamers to provide an additional tool for promoting studies investigating metacognition, a promising and newly emerged correlate of IGD, in China. To evaluate the psychometric properties of MOGS, we collected data from 1340 Chinese university students with gaming experiences (59.3% female, M age  = 19.84 years), in which 262 of them also participated in the one-month retest. Our results indicated that the Chinese version of MOGS has a two-factor structure and satisfactory reliabilities (α = 0.90 and 0.92, ICC = 0.60 and 0.64, AVE = 0.56 and 0.70, ρ c  = 0.88 and 0.92). Moreover, MOGS's convergent validity was evidenced by the expected, positive associations with generic metacognitions, stress, and IGD tendency (r (1338) = 0.29-0.55, p < 0.001) as well as significant MOGS differences between probable IGD and non-IGD gamers (p < 0.001). A 6-item, short-form MOGS, which displayed equivalent psychometric soundness as its full-scale counterpart, was also developed. Wet deposition is a dominant removal pathway of carbonaceous particles from the atmosphere, but few studies have assessed the particulate carbon in precipitation in Chinese cities. To assess the characteristics and sources of particulate carbon, we measured the concentrations, fluxes, stable carbon isotopes, and radiocarbon of particulate carbon, and some cations concentrations in precipitation in Xi'an, China, in 2019. In contrast to rainfall samples, particulate carbon in snowfall samples in Xi'an showed extremely high concentrations and wet deposition fluxes. The concentrations as well as wet deposition fluxes showed no significant (p > 0.05) differences between urban and suburban sites, and they also exhibited low seasonality in rainfall samples. Water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) accounted for the majority (∼90%) of the concentrations and wet deposition fluxes of water-insoluble total carbon (WITC) in precipitation. The best estimates of source apportionment of WITC in precipitation showed that biological sources were the main contributor (80.0% ± 10.5%) in summer, and their contributions decreased to 47.3% ± 12.8% in winter. The contribution of vehicle exhaust emissions accounted for 11.7% ± 3.5% in summer and 39.0% ± 4.3% in winter, while the contributions of coal combustion were relatively small in summer (8.3% ± 7.0%) and winter (13.8% ± 8.5%). Biomass burning accounted for 25.7% ± 9.3% and 89.9% ± 0.7% of the biological sources in summer and winter, respectively, with the remainder comprising other sources of contemporary carbon. The spatial distribution of plutonium isotopes ( 239 Pu, 240 Pu) in the surface sediments collected from the northwestern South China Sea (SCS) in 2018 was investigated. The 239,240 Pu concentrations in surface sediments vary from 0.048 to 0.960 mBq/g (with mean of 0.282 ± 0.242 mBq/g) depending on the geographical feature of the sampling location such as the river estuary, continental shelf, slope and deep basin. Higher 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios (0.24-0.31) in the surface sediment of the SCS compared to the global fallout value of 0.18 were observed, this is attributed to the input of close-in fallout of the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG) transported by the North Equatorial Current and Kuroshio Current to the northern SCS. The contribution of the PPG derived plutonium in the SCS sediment was estimated to be 39%-78% using a simple two-end member mixing model based on the measured 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios in the sediment. Besides the soluble 239,240 Pu level in seawater, load of suspended particulate matter from the river runoff and biological debris, hydrographic and hydrodynamic conditions are key parameters influencing the deposition process of plutonium to the sediment., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. The high prevalence of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) among Asian youth indicates an urgent need to identify protective factors and examine their consistency across Asian cultures in order to facilitate cost-effective interventions. Based on the transactional theory of stress and coping, this study collected data of 1243 online gamers (45% males; 18-25 years) through an anonymous survey from universities in China and Japan and investigated whether three coping resources (i.e., mindfulness, coping flexibility, and social support) serve to protect Chinese and Japanese youth from the impact of psychological distress on IGD tendency. After adjusting for the measurement non-invariance across samples, we found that Japanese students reported higher levels of IGD tendency and psychological distress than Chinese students. The results of multiple-group SEM analyses showed that, after controlling for other predictors, mindfulness served as the strongest protective factor against IGD across samples. Moreover, the buffering effect of mindfulness on the association between psychological distress and IGD tendency of female (but not male) students was observed. Our findings highlighted the cross-cultural invariance of the impact of psychological distress and coping resources on IGD in Chinese and Japanese youth, which can be considered in future IGD prevention programs.

Carbonaceous aerosols are major components in PM 2.5 of both polluted and clean atmosphere. Accurate source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols may support effective PM 2.5 control. Dual-carbon isotope method ( 14 C and 13 C) was adopted to identify the contribution of three main air pollution sources biogenic and biomass (f bb ), liquid fossil (f liq.fossil ) and coal (f coal ). The aerosol samples were collected at three types of sites with distinctly different degree of air pollution: urban, rural and regional background. The seasonal variation of source apportionment of the carbonaceous aerosols in urban Beijing was discussed. Modern biogenic and biomass made an absolute dominance of 92.9 ± 0.5% contribution to the carbonaceous aerosols at the background site Mt. Yulong due to long-range transport from Southeast Asia. The three main sources contributed jointly to the atmospheric carbonaceous aerosols at the rural site Wangdu and the urban site Beijing. The biogenic and biomass source was the major contribution in summer (47.0 ± 0.3%) and autumn (49.3 ± 0.3%) of Beijing, while coal source increased from summer (26.8 ± 13.8%) to autumn (34.7 ± 11.5%). Heating significantly increased the coal source to the dominant contribution (47.0 ± 16.9%) in winter of Beijing. Separate day and night time coal contributions were used to evaluate the two origins of coal combustion: industrial use vs. residential use. Good knowledge on the stable carbon isotopic composition (δ 13 C) of fossil fuels is critical for the estimation of atmospheric CO 2 sources. Here, we complied a comprehensive δ 13 C database including 336 coal, 580 oil, and 1160 natural gas data based on the extensive literature search, and conducted field measurements in two megacities, to characterize the δ 13 C signatures of Chinese fossil fuels. Results show that coal exhibits a narrow range and the most enriched in δ 13 C signature, oil displays intermediate variations both in the distribution and value of δ 13 C. By contrast, natural gas is strongly depleted but became more enriched in δ 13 C signature due to the shift in production from isotopically light oil-type gas to isotopically heavy coal-type gas. We found an obvious overlap between the δ 13 C distributions of oil and natural gas, and the carbon isotopic difference between oil and natural gas is minimized in Ordos Basin. Therefore, we suggested that the geographic origin is a certain factor that must be considered when δ 13 C of fossil fuels is used to estimate CO 2 source contributions, and the measurement of δ 13 CO 2 signatures of local end members is a better alternative in the absence of detailed information about the geographical origins of fossil fuels. Mobile phone addiction is a robust phenomenon observed throughout the world. The social aspect of mobile phone use is crucial; therefore, phubbing is a part of the mobile phone addiction phenomenon. Phubbing is defined as ignoring an interlocutor by glancing at one's mobile phone during a face-to-face conversation. The main aim of this study was to investigate how the Phubbing Scale (containing 10 items) might vary across countries, and between genders. Data were collected in 20 countries: Belarus, Brazil, China, Croatia, Ecuador, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, UK, Ukraine and USA. The mean age across the sample (N = 7696, 65.8% women, 34.2% men) was 25.32 years (SD = 9.50). The cross-cultural invariance of the scale was investigated using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses (MGCFA) as well as the invariance analyses. Additionally, data from each country were assessed individually via confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs). Background: With concern over the rise in mental health symptoms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the present study set out to address the absence of pandemic-specific screening tools for detecting those in Chinese societies who are at-risk for experiencing mental distress due to the pandemic; thus, its aim was to validate the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and Obsession with COVID-19 Scale (OCS) in Chinese adults., Methods: With a two-stage cluster random sampling method, we surveyed 1011 Chinese community-dwelling adults (38.8% men; 41.2 years old on average with an SD of 15.8) in June and July of 2020., Results: Our psychometric evaluation results showed that the Chinese version of CAS and OCS retained their original one-dimensional structure and demonstrated measurement invariance across genders. In line with validation studies of the CAS and OCS in other languages, subsequent analyses also provided support to our Chinese version with respect to their satisfactory internal consistency (α = .87 and .73, respectively), and good concurrent validity (i.e., positive associations with negative feelings, excessive time-consumption, subjective distress, and functioning impairment)., Limitations: Due to constraints of time and cross-sectional design, we only validated CAS and OCS among Chinese adults and did not evaluate their test-retest reliability nor predictive validity., Conclusions: Considering the practical benefits of understanding the source of mental symptoms during the pandemic, we recommend the use of CAS and OCS in Chinese communities to facilitate early identification and intervention for those who require clinical attention due to their COVID-19 related anxiety and obsessive thoughts., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Concentrations of 239 Pu and 240 Pu in 163 surface soil samples and five soil cores collected from the northeast and north China were analyzed using the radiochemical separation combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurement. The average 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios (0.185 ± 0.018) for all surface soil samples indicated that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in the studied region. The 239,240 Pu concentrations of the surface soil ranged from 0.002 mBq/g to 4.82 mBq/g, lying in the range of the reported results in the areas with similar latitude, except for a few samples. The distribution of 239,240 Pu in this region is controlled by the deposition of plutonium in the atmosphere and its preservation in the soil, which were affects by multi-factors such as topography, climate, utilization of the land and vegetation coverage. Background: Fusarium species are emerging causative agents of superficial and disseminated human infections. Early diagnosis and treatment contribute to better prognosis of severe infection., Objectives: To detect the effectiveness of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS) for Fusarium identification, and evaluate the susceptibility profiles to clinical available antifungals., Methods: All 203 clinical Fusarium isolates and 25 environmental isolates were identified by using translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1) and RNA polymerase subunit II (RPB2) sequencing and MALDI-ToF MS. Antifungal susceptibility testing was determined by a microdilution method following the CLSI approved standard M38-A3 document., Results: Correct identification rates at the species and genus levels were 89.04% (203/228) and 95.18% (217/228), respectively, using Bruker Filamentous Fungi Library 1.0 combined with the novel database. Seven species complexes with 19 Fusarium species were identified, including F. solani (59.21%, n = 135), F. verticillioides (17.54%, n = 40), F. proliferatum (6.58%, n = 15) and F. oxysporum (4.39%, n = 10). Four uncommon species complexes (F. incarnatum-equiseti SC, F. dimerum SC, F. redolens SC and F. sporotrichioides SC) were also identified. A high degree of antifungal resistance was observed. Fusarium isolates exhibited lower MICs to luliconazole and terbinafine compared with amphotericin B and voriconazole, which in turn were significantly more active than amorolfine, fluconazole and itraconazole., Conclusions: MALDI-ToF MS showed good performance in Fusarium species with an adapted Bruker library and expanded database. The research on geochemical behaviors of iodine is significant for deep understanding of the source and distribution of iodine on the earth. However, as one of the most important sources, the ocean emissions and relative transport pathways of iodine, as well as the preservation after deposition are still not well known, especially in the arid areas of central Asia. A peat sediment core collected nearby Barkol Lake from northwest China was analyzed for iodine isotopes ( 127 I and 129 I). The observed high 127 I concentration in the top 2 cm indicated a significant accumulation of iodine in the surface oxic conditions due to the continuous sources of incompletely decomposed organic matter. Dissociation of iodine into pore waters occurred once the anoxic conditions established beneath the surface by a serial reduction reaction during the degradation of organic matter. The temporal variation of anthropogenic 129 I in the peat sediment recorded its sources and transport pathways. Besides the global fallout 129 I during late 1950s and early 1960s, the significantly increased air releases from the European nuclear fuel reprocessing plants during 1975-1997 and the increased marine discharges since 1990s contributed the major portion of 129 I in the peat core. Aims: Despite the high prevalence of both depression and smartphone addiction among Chinese adolescents, research examining their bidirectional relationship has been limited. Moreover, longitudinal research regarding the influence of maladaptive metacognitive beliefs on smartphone addiction is scarce. This 6-month longitudinal study aimed to address these research gaps by testing a cross-lagged panel model of maladaptive metacognition, depression, and smartphone addiction., Methods: Four hundred and fifty-nine Chinese high school students voluntarily completed an anonymous questionnaire at baseline, and 313 of them (36.1% male; age = 14 to 18; M = 16.88, SD = 0.62) completed the same questionnaire at follow-up., Results: Positive correlations were shown among depression, smartphone addiction, and maladaptive metacognition at both waves (r = 0.16 to 0.57, p < .01). The results of the cross-lagged analysis demonstrated only the prospective effect of depression on smartphone addiction (β = 0.18, p < .001) but not vice versa. Moreover, maladaptive metacognition assessed at baseline significantly predicted subsequent depression (β = 0.14, p < .01) but not smartphone addiction (p>.05). Additional path analysis showed a significant indirect effect of baseline maladaptive metacognition (0.099 [95% CI = 0.042, 0.183]) on subsequent smartphone addiction, via depression., Conclusions: Findings of this study showed that the relationship between depression and smartphone addiction was unidirectional rather than bidirectional among Chinese adolescents. Specifically, depression predicted smartphone addiction, while maladaptive metacognition predicted depression. Depression also mediated the relationship between maladaptive metacognition and smartphone addiction. Lockdown measures to control the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) sharply limited energy consumption and carbon emissions. The lockdown effect on carbon emissions has been studied by many researchers using statistical approaches. However, the lockdown effect on atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) on an urban scale remains unclear. Here we present CO 2 concentration and carbon isotopic (δ 13 C) measurements to assess the impact of COVID-19 control measures on atmospheric CO 2 in Xi'an, China. We find that CO 2 concentrations during the lockdown period were 7.5% lower than during the normal period (prior to the Spring Festival, Jan 25 to Feb 4, 2020). The observed CO 2 excess (total CO 2 minus background CO 2 ) during the lockdown period was 52.3% lower than that during the normal period, and 35.7% lower than the estimated CO 2 excess with the effect of weather removed. A Keeling plot shows that in contrast CO 2 concentrations and δ 13 C were weakly correlated (R 2  = 0.18) during the lockdown period, reflecting a change in CO 2 sources imposed by the curtailment of traffic and industrial emissions. Radiocarbon ( 14 C) is a unique and important tool for understanding carbon cycle in the nature, and its use can be significantly enhanced where reliable historical atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 records can be established. In China, continuous atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 records since the 1950s are scarce, a period when dramatic variations of Δ 14 CO 2 occurred caused by intensive human activities. In this research, Δ 14 C of Qinghai spruce tree rings collected from Huangzhong (HZ) (36.27°N, 101.67°E, 2982 m amsl) were measured by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, and a Δ 14 CO 2 time series from 1957 to 2015 was reconstructed. The results show that HZ Δ 14 C was generally higher than the contemporaneous average level in the mid-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The peak value of HZ Δ 14 C occurred in 1964 (as bomb peak) was higher than that of other tree ring records in East Asia at a similar latitude, likely due to the impact of the atmosphere nuclear tests at Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan). The record shows no obvious disturbance of Lop Nor nuclear weapons tests (in Northwest China) during 1964-1980, except for 1971. A local Suess effect began to appear since 2001, and the estimated atmospheric fossil fuel-derived CO 2 (CO 2ff ) concentration increased from 3.5 ppm to 8.8 ppm from 2006 to 2015. This is associated with the implementation of the "Western Development" strategy in China. HZ Δ 14 C records document background Δ 14 C data, useful for regional carbon cycle research and atmospheric CO 2ff quantification in the region. Background: Dengue virus causes the dengue fever as well as hemorrhagic fever in tropical and sub-tropical countries. It is now endemic in most parts of the South East Asia. Full-genome information of dengue virus 3 is not available from Yemen., Methods: In this study, the dengue virus 3 was detected by diagnostic tools like serology and RT-PCR in the samples isolated from a patient in Yemen. The full-genome was sequenced, and the identity, phylogenetic relationship and recombination analysis was performed by using BioEdit, MEGA X and RDP4 softwares., Results: The full-genome of the Yemen isolate was found to be 10,643 nt long with 3390 amino acids. The Yemen dengue virus 3 isolate showed the sequence similarity (98.5-92.4%) with dengue virus 3 isolates from China, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh respectively. The significant non-synonymous substitutions of amino acid in Yemen isolate were observed with selected isolates. The phylogenetic tree of Yemen isolate formed a unique clade within genotype III and sub-clade into lineage III. Smartphone technologies have played a crucial role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the increased use of smartphones during the pandemic period may expose the general public to a higher risk of problematic smartphone use (PSU). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of PSU among Chinese community adults and adopted a social-cognitive theory and social axiom framework to evaluate the effects of beliefs on PSU. A Chinese adult sample ( N = 616) was obtained through probability sampling via a telephone survey from Macao, China and included 591 smartphone users' data (39.4% men) for formal analysis. The prevalence of PSU was 43.3% in the overall sample, with 41.9% in women, and 45.5% in men. Two types of beliefs derived from the social-cognitive theory, pandemic-related self-efficacy and government efficacy, both showed significant and negative correlations with PSU ( r = -0.13 and -0.10, p < 0.05). As for the two beliefs from the social axiom framework, reward for application was negatively correlated with PSU ( r = -0.10, p < 0.05), whereas social cynicism was positively associated with PSU ( r = 0.25, p < 0.001). Among those four beliefs, social cynicism exerted the most substantial effect on PSU when controlling for demographics. Our findings enriched the understanding of PSU during the pandemic and provided empirical direction regarding cognition-based intervention strategies for reducing PSU.

In vitro susceptibility testing for Trichophyton rubrum has shown resistance to terbinafine, azoles and amorolfine, locally, but epidemiological cutoffs are not available. In order to assess the appropriateness of current first-line antifungal treatment for T. rubrum in China, we characterized antifungal susceptibility patterns of Chinese T. rubrum strains to nine antifungals and also described the upper limits of wild-type (WT) minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) (UL-WT) based on our study and another six studies published during the last decades. Sixty-two clinical isolates originating from seven provinces in China were identified as T. rubrum sensu stricto; all Chinese strains showed low MICs to eight out of nine antifungal drugs. Terbinafine (TBF) showed the lowest MICs of all antifungal classes tested in both the Chinese and global groups, with a 97.5% UL-WT MIC-value of 0.03 mg/L. No non-WT isolates were observed for TBF in China, but were reported in 18.5% of the global group. Our study indicated that TBF was still the most active drug for Chinese T. rubrum isolates, and all strains were within the WT-population. TBF therefore remains recommended for primary therapy to dermatophytosis caused by T. rubrum in China now, but regular surveillance of dermatophytes and antifungal susceptibility is recommended.

The deep population history of East Asia remains poorly understood owing to a lack of ancient DNA data and sparse sampling of present-day people 1,2 . Here we report genome-wide data from 166 East Asian individuals dating to between 6000 BC and AD 1000 and 46 present-day groups. Hunter-gatherers from Japan, the Amur River Basin, and people of Neolithic and Iron Age Taiwan and the Tibetan Plateau are linked by a deeply splitting lineage that probably reflects a coastal migration during the Late Pleistocene epoch. We also follow expansions during the subsequent Holocene epoch from four regions. First, hunter-gatherers from Mongolia and the Amur River Basin have ancestry shared by individuals who speak Mongolic and Tungusic languages, but do not carry ancestry characteristic of farmers from the West Liao River region (around 3000 BC), which contradicts theories that the expansion of these farmers spread the Mongolic and Tungusic proto-languages. Second, farmers from the Yellow River Basin (around 3000 BC) probably spread Sino-Tibetan languages, as their ancestry dispersed both to Tibet-where it forms approximately 84% of the gene pool in some groups-and to the Central Plain, where it has contributed around 59-84% to modern Han Chinese groups. Third, people from Taiwan from around 1300 BC to AD 800 derived approximately 75% of their ancestry from a lineage that is widespread in modern individuals who speak Austronesian, Tai-Kadai and Austroasiatic languages, and that we hypothesize derives from farmers of the Yangtze River Valley. Ancient people from Taiwan also derived about 25% of their ancestry from a northern lineage that is related to, but different from, farmers of the Yellow River Basin, which suggests an additional north-to-south expansion. Fourth, ancestry from Yamnaya Steppe pastoralists arrived in western Mongolia after around 3000 BC but was displaced by previously established lineages even while it persisted in western China, as would be expected if this ancestry was associated with the spread of proto-Tocharian Indo-European languages. Two later gene flows affected western Mongolia: migrants after around 2000 BC with Yamnaya and European farmer ancestry, and episodic influences of later groups with ancestry from Turan.

Background: Mongolian populations are widely distributed geographically, showing abundant ethnic diversity with geographic and tribal differences., Aim: To infer the genetic substructure, admixture and ancient genetic sources of Mongolians together with Kazakhs., Subjects and Methods: We genotyped more than 690,000 genome-wide SNPs from 33 Mongolian and Chinese Kazakh individuals and compared these with both ancient and present-day Eurasian populations using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), ADMIXTURE, Refine -IBD, f statistics, qpWave and qpAdm ., Results: We found genetic substructures within Mongolians corresponding to Ölöd, Chahar, and Inner Mongolian clusters, which was consistent with tribe classifications. Mongolian and Kazakh groups derived about 6-40% of West Eurasian related ancestry, most likely from Bronze Age Steppe populations. The East Asian related ancestry in Mongolian and Kazakh groups was well represented by the Neolithic DevilsCave related nomadic lineage, comprising 42-64% of studied groups. We also detected 10-51% of Han Chinese related ancestry in Mongolian and Kazakh groups, especially in Inner Mongolians. The average admixture times for Inner Mongolian, Mongolian&#95;Chahar, Mongolian&#95;Ölöd and Chinese Kazakh were about 1381, 626, 635 and 632 years ago, respectively, with Han and French as the sources., Conclusion: The DevilsCave related ancestry was once widespread westwards covering a wide geographical range from Far East Russia to the Mongolia Plateau. The formation of present-day Mongolic and Turkic-speaking populations has also received genetic influence from agricultural expansion.

The steep rise of smartphone use has raised public concerns about smartphone addiction and its associated negative health consequences, such as poor sleep quality; however, limited research has examined the psychological mechanisms underlying these associations. The current study tested the effects of smartphone addiction on poor sleep quality, through self-regulation and bedtime procrastination, among 427 Chinese undergraduate students, aged 18 or older (M = 19.36; female = 66%), who voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire. The results showed that 1/3 of participants reported poor subjective sleep quality. Smartphone addiction and bedtime procrastination had a significant positive relationship, whereas self-regulation had a significant negative association, with poor sleep quality (which was assessed by sleep latency, sleep duration, and subjective sleep quality). Despite its nonsignificant direct effects, the indirect effects of smartphone addiction, via both self-regulation and bedtime procrastination, on the three indicators of poor sleep quality were statistically significant. The findings have supported the premise that both bedtime procrastination and poor self-regulation are risk-enhancing mediators on the association between smartphone addiction on poor sleep quality. Background: This study investigated the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the short form of Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30), which is an effective tool to assess metacognitive beliefs that have been linked to mental disturbance/disorder. We also tested whether metacognition factors would correlate with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) tendency., Methods: Six hundred and eighty Chinese university students (Mean age=19.72, SD=1.38; 31.9% male) voluntarily completed an anonymous online questionnaire. Using standard translation procedures, the MCQ-30 items were translated from English into Chinese language and then back-translated. Depression, anxiety, and IGD tendency were assessed by validated scales., Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results supported the five-factor structure of the MCQ-30, with satisfactory model fit and good reliability. Criterion-related validity was also supported by significant positive correlations between the five factors and depression/anxiety symptoms. All of the five metacognition factors were also significantly correlated with IGD tendency, with positive beliefs about worry and cognitive confidence being the most salient factor after controlling for gender and age., Limitations: This study did not examine the test-retest reliability of this scale, and the generalizability of the findings to other age groups remains unclear., Conclusions: This study showed satisfactory psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the MCQ-30 and is the first to demonstrate a positive association between specific metacognition factors and IGD tendency among Chinese people. The emergence of a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak represents a challenge for the diagnostic laboratories responsible for developing test kits to identify those infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods with rapid and accurate detection are essential to control the sources of infection, to prevent the spread of the disease and to assist decision-making by public health managers. Currently, there is a wide variety of tests available with different detection methodologies, levels of specificity and sensitivity, detection time, and with an extensive range of prices. This review therefore aimed to conduct a patent search in relation to tests for the detection of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2. The greatest number of patents identified in the search were registered between 2003 and 2011, being mainly deposited by China, the Republic of Korea, and the United States. Most of the patents used the existing RT-PCR, ELISA, and isothermal amplification methods to develop simple, sensitive, precise, easy to use, low-cost tests that reduced false-negative or false-positive results. Plutonium in the environment has drawn significant attentions due to its radiotoxicity in high concentration and source term linked with nuclear accidents and contaminations. The isotopic ratio of plutonium is source dependent and can be used as a fingerprint to discriminate the sources of radioactive contaminant. 239 Pu, 240 Pu and 137 Cs in surface soil and soil cores collected from Northern Xinjiang were determined in this work. The concentrations of 239,240 Pu and 137 Cs are in the range of 0.06-1.20 Bq kg -1 , and <1.0-31.4 Bq kg -1 (decay corrected to Sep. 2017), respectively, falling in the ranges of global fallout in this latitude zone. The 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios of 0.118-0.209 and 239,240 Pu/ 137 Cs activity ratios of 0.039-0.215 were measured. Among the investigated sites, distinctly lower 240 Pu/ 239 Pu atomic ratios of 0.118-0.133 and higher 239,240 Pu/ 137 Cs activity ratios of 0.065-0.215 compared to the global fallout values were observed in the northwest part, indicating a significant contribution from other source besides the global fallout. This extra source is mainly attributed to the releases of atmospheric nuclear weapons testing at Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, which was transported by the west and northwest wind through the river valley among mountains in this region. This contribution is estimated to account for 28-43% of the global fallout in the northwest part of Northern Xinjiang. Life history (LH) strategies explain how organisms adapt to the environment and make the best use of their resources to fulfill bodily maintenance, growth, reproduction and other functions. The K-SF-42 is a short version of the 199-item Arizona Life History Battery for assessing seven different domains of LH strategies. This article aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the K-SF-42. We recruited 1,016 Chinese university students, who aged 16 to 28 years old ( M age = 19.47, SD = 1.17) to participant in an anonymous questionnaire. Results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported the second-order six-factor model (except romantic partner attachment), and the scale and subscales of such measurement displayed good internal consistencies. With the exception of religiosity, all of the subscales showed significant positive correlations with a brief unidimensional measure of LH strategies (i.e., the Mini-K). The criterion-related validity of the scale was further supported by the association between its higher score (suggesting slower LH strategies) and the lower levels of childhood harshness and unpredictability. This study provided evidence for the satisfactory applicability of the Chinese version of the K-SF-42 to a Chinese population and contributed to the further investigation of the LH strategies' mechanisms underlying human behavior across cultures.

Background and Aims: Problematic online social networking use is prevalent among adolescents, but consensus about the instruments and their optimal cut-off points is lacking. This study derived an optimal cut-off point for the validated Online Social Networking Addiction (OSNA) scale to identify probable OSNA cases among Chinese adolescents., Methods: A survey recruited 4,951 adolescent online social networking users. Latent profile analysis (LPA) and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were applied to the validated 8-item OSNA scale to determine its optimal cut-off point., Results: The 3-class model was selected by multiple criteria, and validated in a randomly split-half subsample. Accordingly, participants were categorized into the low risk (36.4%), average risk (50.4%), and high risk (13.2%) groups. The highest risk group was regarded as "cases" and the rest as "non-cases", serving as the reference standard in ROC analysis, which identified an optimal cut-off point of 23 (sensitivity: 97.2%, specificity: 95.2%). The cut-off point was used to classify participants into positive (probable case: 17:0%) and negative groups according to their OSNA scores. The positive group (probable cases) reported significantly longer duration and higher intensity of online social networking use, and higher prevalence of Internet addiction than the negative group., Conclusions: The classification strategy and results are potentially useful for future research that measure problematic online social networking use and its impact on health among adolescents. The approach can facilitate research that requires cut-off points of screening tools but gold standards are unavailable.

Fossil fuel-derived CO 2 (CO 2ff ) time series are critical to understanding urban carbon emissions, and to devise strategies to mitigate emission reduction. Using tree ring 14 C archives, we reconstruct an historical CO 2ff time series from 1991 to 2015 in the greater Xi'an region, China. CO 2ff concentrations from the urban sites reached 22.5 ppm, with an average of 14.0 ppm, while average values from rural and mountain sites averaged about 6.0 ppm. These values provide a good measure of the distribution of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions in the region. We also observed CO 2ff concentration increases from both urban and rural sites during the study period, with more significant increases among urban sites. The primary goal of this study was to examine job insecurity as a work stressor predicting psychological distress (i.e. depression, anxiety, and stress) among casino employees in Macao, China. The study was also the first one to test whether occupational future time perspective mediated the above relations. We recruited 1014 participants, who voluntarily took part in an anonymous survey in October 2016. Results suggested that job insecurity was positively related to psychological distress (i.e. depression, anxiety and stress). In line with our hypothesis, we also found that occupational future time perspective significantly mediated the association between job insecurity and psychological distress. The findings suggest that, in psychological health promotion campaigns among casino employees, job insecurity is a key factor to be addressed via organizational policies and activities.
