The distributions and correlations among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and plants were analyzed. In this study, 9 soil samples and 44 plant samples were collected near major lakes (Hongze Lake, Luoma Lake, Chaohu, Changhu, Danjiangkou Reservoir, Wuhan East Lake, Longgan Lake, Qiandao Lake and Liangzi Lake) in eastern China. The following results were obtained: The total contents of PAHs in soil varied from 99.17 to 552.10 ng/g with an average of 190.35 ng/g, and the total contents of PAHs in plants varied from 122.93 to 743.44 ng/g, with an average of 274.66 ng/g. The PAHs in soil were dominated by medium- and low-molecular-weight PAHs, while the PAHs in plants were dominated by low-molecular-weight PAHs. The proportion of high-molecular-weight PAHs was the lowest in both soil and plants. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA) identified combustion as the main source of PAHs in soil and plants. The plant PAH monomer content was negatively correlated with Koa. Acenaphthylene, anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and dibenzo[a,h]anthracene were significantly correlated in plants and soil. In addition, no significant correlation between the total contents of the 16 PAHs and the content of high-, medium-, and low-molecular-weight PAHs in plants and soil was found. Bidens pilosa L. and Gaillardia pulchella Foug in the Compositae family and cron in the Poaceae family showed relatively stronger accumulation of PAHs, indicating their potential for phytoremediation. As an ubiquitous carcinogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are closely related to anthropogenic activities. The process of urbanization leads to the spatial interlacing of farmlands and urbanized zones. However, field evidence on the influence of urbanization on the accumulation of PAHs in crops of peri-urban farmlands is lacking. This study comparatively investigated the urbanization-driven levels, compositions, and sources of PAHs in 120 paired plant and soil samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta in China and their species-specific human intake risks. The concentrations of PAHs in crops and soils in the peri-urban areas were 2407.92 ng g−1 and 546.64 ng g−1, respectively, which are significantly higher than those in the rural areas. The PAHs in the root were highly relevant to those in the soils (R2 = 0.63, p < 0.01), and the root bioconcentration factors were higher than 1.0, implying the contributions of root uptake to plant accumulations. However, the translocation factors in the peri-urban areas (1.57 ± 0.33) were higher than those in the rural areas (1.19 ± 0.14), indicating the enhanced influence through gaseous absorption. For the congeners, the 2- to 3-ring PAHs showed a higher plant accumulation potential than the 4- to 6-ring PAHs. Principal component analysis show that the PAHs in the peri-urban plants predominantly resulted from urbanization parameters, such as coal combustion, vehicle emissions, and biomass burning. The mean values of estimated dietary intake of PAHs from the consumption of peri-urban and rural crops were 9116 ng day−1 and 6601.83 ng day−1, respectively. The intake risks of different crops followed the order rice > cabbage > carrot > pea. Given the significant input of PAHs from urban to farmland, the influence of many anthropogenic pollutants arising from rapid urbanization should be considered when assessing the agricultural food safety. An analytical method of accelerated solvent extraction combined with gas chromatographic – microelectron capture detection (GC-μECD) was developed for the determination of energetic compounds (ECs) in soils from Chinese ammunition-contaminated sites. The results showed that the recoveries of most compounds were 82.86 ± 7.35 − 109.70 ± 10.82%, 82.53 ± 6.18 − 99.21 ± 1.88%, 80.44 ± 1.73 − 108.20 ± 4.58% at spiked levels of 20, 100, and 500 ng, respectively. Each spiked level was analyzed in triplicate with relative standard deviations from 3.51 to 13.34%, 1.90 to 10.51%, and 0.50 to 5.90%. GC-μECD is highly sensitive to these electronegative compounds with method detection limits (MDL) from 0.64 to 3.48 ng·g−1. This technique has the advantages of high efficiency, reduced solvent consumption, low detection limits, and suitability for a wide range of compounds. The developed approach was successfully applied to the determination of energetic compounds in soils collected from four ammunition-contaminated sites in China. The concentrations of energetic compounds in soil were from 5.60 to 9.22 × 105 ng·g−1 at these sites. Purpose: Much attention has been paid to anthropogenic activities in the metropolitan zone and associated with their organic pollutants i.e. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) discharge. This work aims to explore the impact factors, sources, and cancer risks of soil PAHs from the northern Taihu Basin, China, providing worthwhile information for soil remediation and health risk management. Materials and methods: In this study, soil samples were collected from 43 residential areas in the northern Taihu Basin of the Yangtze River Delta. Determination of 16 PAHs performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The primary sources of PAHs were discriminated by a positive matrix decomposition (PMF) model and the contributions were quantitatively evaluated. The health risk of PAHs was assessed by the increased lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model. Results and discussion: Results showed that the PAH concentration ranged from 87.15 − 947.02 ng g−1, and the compounds were mainly composed of 4–6-ring monomers, accounting for 84.11%. The soil erosion-derived input of PAHs from land to water was determined to be 15.27 kg yr−1. Source identification of PAHs by the PMF model revealed a 50.96% contribution of vehicle emission, 34.07% of coke and coal combustion, and 14.97% of the petroleum-derived source. The correlation analysis indicated that the distance from the nearest trunk road was the key factor influencing PAHs value in soils, followed by coal/coke consumption and the age of the residential area. The changes in TOC and TN contents greatly affected the adsorption of PAHs. The ILCR value was in a range of (1.09–34.00) × 10−6. Conclusions: The highest concentrations of PAHs in soils were found in the oldest urban district. PAHs in sediments are caused by soil erosion attributing approximately 10% of the total sediments in the northern Taihu Basin. Vehicle emissions were the dominant sources. The total ILCR value ranged from 10–6 to 10–4, reflecting that potential risks would occur occasionally for residents exposed to soil PAHs, with higher cancer risk for adults, and food ingestion was the dominant exposure pathway. Thirty surface sediments and three sediment cores were collected from mangrove wetlands in the Pearl River Estuary of South China to investigate the spatial and vertical distribution of Dechlorane Plus (DP). DP concentrations in the mangrove surface sediments ranged from 0.0130 to 1.504 ng/g dry weight (dw). DP concentrations in sediments from Shenzhen were significantly greater than those from Guangzhou and Zhuhai. Anti-Cl-DP, the dechlorinated product of anti-DP, was also detected in the mangrove sediments with concentrations ranged from not detected to 0.0198 ng/g dw. Significant positive relationship between anti-Cl-DP and anti-DP levels was observed in the mangrove sediments, suggesting that photo and/or microbial degradation of anti-DP might occur in the sediments. The f values in the mangrove sediments were close to those in the technical DP products, suggesting that stereoselective enrichment of anti-DP may not exist in the mangrove sediments. DP concentrations in the mangrove sediment cores generally showed an increasing trend from the bottom to top layers. As a class of synthetic sulfur drugs, sulfonamides (SAs) have been used to treat diseases and promote organism growth. Different concentrations of SAs have been detected in the water environment, which has threatened the ecological environment. In this study, the contamination of 9 SAs in water, sediments, and 8 fish species from the Hangbu-Fengle River, China, were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. The total SA concentrations in surface water, sediments, and fish were ND-5.064 ng/L, ND-5.052 ng/g dry weight (d.w.), and ND-1.42 ng/g wet weight (w.w.), respectively. The major compounds were sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in water and fish. The SA levels of in fish from different habitat preferences revealed a spatial difference, with the order of demersal species > pelagic species. Moreover, the SA concentrations were affected by trophic guilds, indicating their decrease in the order of piscivorous fish > omnivorous fish > planktivorous fish > herbivorous fish. The obtained bioaccumulation factors showed that SMZ and SMX have strong bioenrichments in Ophiocephalus argus Cantor and Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. The risk assessment indicated that SAs did not pose significant health threats to the organisms. This research is the first report of SA contamination in the Hangbu-Fenle River, which can provide an important scientific basis for their pollution prevention and ecological risk assessment in the aquatic environment. Purpose: Compared with deep oligotrophic waters, the distribution and geochemical processes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in shallow eutrophic waters are more complicated. The fourth largest freshwater lake in China (Lake Hongze) was taken as an example to study distribution, sources, bioaccumulation, and air–water exchange of PAHs in shallow eutrophic waters. Materials and methods: Eighty samples of surface sediments, air, water, and plankton were collected simultaneously from 15 sampling sites in November 2018. PAHs were extracted, concentrated, and analyzed using GC–MS. Results and discussion: Average concentrations of ∑PAH16 in the surface sediments, atmosphere, water, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and suspended particle matter were 511 ± 212 ng g−1, 119 ng m−3, 232 ± 91.2 ng L−1, 12,500 ± 70,000 ng g−1, 102,000 ± 83,600 ng g−1, and 35,100 ± 24,700 ng g−1. Log BCF of PAHs in phytoplankton ranged from 6.7 ± 7.8 to 16.0 ± 4.4. Log BAF of PAHs in zooplankton ranged from 8.2 ± 8.1 to 16.8 ± 3.9. Log BMF of PAHs from phytoplankton to zooplankton varied from − 0.25 ± 0.39 to 0.25 ± 0.55. Conclusions: Combustion of petroleum and coal was the main source for the PAHs in the surface sediments of Lake Hongze. Concentrations of PAHs in phytoplankton and zooplankton were negatively correlated to the trophic level index. Bioaccumulation of PAHs by plankton was observed. No biomagnification occurred from phytoplankton to zooplankton for most PAHs during this sampling period. The net air–water flux of low molecular weight PAHs was from water to air. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of organic pollutants. They are used as flame retardants that caused worldwide environmental concern. This study investigated the occurrence of PBDEs in soils and dusts from three plastic manufacture plants and surrounding areas in Eastern China. A total of 13 PBDE congeners were detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (electron impact ionization). The total concentrations of PBDEs range from 2.21 to 558, 19.7–4916, and 8.70–18,451 ng/g dry weight in the soils of three sampling areas, with mean of 1004 ng/g d w; in dusts, the concentrations range from 7240 to 10,469, 684–4482, and 193–3989 ng/g d w, with an overall mean of 3619 ng/g d w. The most abundant congener is the BDE-209, followed by BDE-153 and BDE-85. This indicates that the brominated flame retardant added in the plastic manufacture is mainly the commodity decabromodiphenyl ether. In comparison with other polluted areas around the world, the PBDE concentrations in the soils of the plastic manufacture plants are similar to those in soils of waste plastic disposal areas and PBDEs production sites, but orders of magnitude higher than those in agricultural soils, mountain soils and rural soils. Daily exposure was estimated using the average concentrations of the pollution sites. Braised chicken is a popular traditional chicken product in China with a special and complicated culinary method. However, there has been little research focused on the food safety problems caused by hazardous compounds in braised chicken. In this study, the contents of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in representative braised chicken samples were determined. Total HCAs in braised chicken were relatively high (6.20–27.7 ng g−1), and aminoimidazoazaarenes (AIAs) took a large proportion (54.0–86.4%). 2-Amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) was found in all samples with a high level (2.72–13.5 ng g−1), whilst 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) was low (0.14–0.41 ng g−1). 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole (Norharman) and 1-methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole (Harman) were main components in aminocarbolines (ACs). So the potential safety risk in braised chicken caused by high HCAs content should be paid attention. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyse and visualise the differences of HCAs levels among braised chicken samples. The result indicated that the differences among these samples were significant, but there were no obvious similarities between samples produced in the same regions. Moreover, there were rare significant positive correlations between chemical components (including moisture, fat, protein, creatine and free amino acids) and hazardous compounds. In this study, the distribution of phthalate esters (PAEs) in twenty surface sediment and five core sediment samples in Taihu Lake, China, was investigated, and their ecological risks were assessed. Of the 10 PAE congeners, five PAEs including diethyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP), and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were identified and quantified, and the rest 5 PAEs were below the limits of quantification. The concentrations of the total PAEs (ΣPAEs) in surface sediments and core sediments varied from 1.12 × 103 to 18.71 × 103 ng/g and 0.23 × 103 to 5.22 × 103 ng/g, respectively. The dominant PAEs were DBP and DIBP, contributing 85.90% to the ΣPAEs. Overall, the highest concentrations of ΣPAEs occurred in northern lake, followed by eastern lake and western lake, and southern lake was the least polluted area. The spatial distribution of ΣPAEs in sediments showed that the PAE distribution pattern was influenced by the riverside environment. The historical trend of the past 100 years was reconstructed in the core sediment via a 210Pb dating technique. The vertical profile of the PAE congeners indicated that concentrations of PAEs started to increase since the 1990s in northern core sediments. It was estimated that the inventories of ΣPAEs in Taihu Lake was 4868.01 t. The potential ecological risk assessment by hazard quotient (HQ) method revealed that DBP posed a moderate risk due to its relatively high concentrations, with DIBP posed a low risk, while DEP, DMP, and DEHP exhibited no risk to the aquatic system. BACKGROUND The toxicity and health risks of mycotoxins have encouraged increased awareness and strict monitoring of these contaminants in agricultural by‐products. In this paper, we developed and tested a sensitive, selective, and self‐assembling immunochromatographic (IC) strip for on‐site detection of ochratoxin A (OTA). We were able to demonstrate semi‐quantitative and quantitative detection of OTA in agricultural by‐product samples. RESULTS: The optimized IC strip had a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 ng mL−1 OTA using the naked eye for semi‐quantitative detection. When a digitized strip reader was used to achieve quantitative results, the LOD for OTA was reduced to 0.1 ng mL−1 with a linear detection range of 0.1–10 ng mL−1. We also evaluated the specificity, stability, accuracy, and precision of the IC strip and demonstrated high performance in all of these areas. We then confirmed the ability of the IC strip to visually detect OTA contamination in authentic agricultural by‐product samples from the markets in China. Furthermore, quantitative detection of OTA using the IC strip showed that the concentration of OTA ranged from 1.7 to 101.3 ng g−1 in the positive agricultural by‐product samples, correlating well with the measurements obtained via liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) have been widely used to control insect pests, while their environmental residues and associated hazardous impacts on human and ecosystem health have attracted increasing attention worldwide. In this study, we examined the current levels and associated spatial and temporal patterns of NNIs in multiple environmental media across China. Concentrations of NNIs in surface water, sediment, and soil were in the range of 9.94–755 ng·L−1, 0.07–8.30 ng·g−1 DW, and 0.009–356 ng·g−1 DW, respectively. The high levels of NNIs in surface water, such as in Yangtze River (755 ng·L−1), North River (539 ng·L−1), Nandu River (519 ng·L−1), and Minjiang River (514 ng·L−1), were dominated by imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid due to their extensive use. The levels of NNIs in sediments were relatively low, and the highest concentration (8.30 ng·g−1 DW) was observed in Dongguan ditch. Sediment–water exchange calculated from fugacity fraction indicated that NNIs in sediment can be released back into the water due to their high solubility and low KOW. Soils from agricultural zones contained the largest residual NNIs, with imidacloprid concentrations in cultivated soil reaching 119 ng·g−1 DW. The calculated leaching potential showed that clothianidin has the highest migration potential to deep soil or groundwater. The monitored data of NNIs presented a decreasing trend from 2016 to 2018, which might be caused by the implementation of relevant control policies for NNI applications. The high levels of NNIs mainly occurred in southern China due to frequent agricultural activities and warm and humid meteorological conditions. The results from this study improve our understanding of the pollution levels and environmental behavior of NNIs in different environmental media across China and provide new knowledge that is needed for making future control policies for NNIs production and application. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in a variety of coastal marine seafood from the Wentai fishing area, which is in proximity to highly urbanized areas and provides a significant portion of the marine aquatic products in Eastern China. Specifically, total PAHs ranged from 320 to 2500 ng/g d.w., whereas carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 21 to 92 ng/g d.w. According to the source diagnosis, the PAHs in the seafood were generally from sources highly related to fossil fuel. Thus, it is necessary to control the unintentional use of fossil fuels and optimize the energy structure in the terrestrial area nearby. Moreover, the food chain structure and the environmental behavior of PAHs through the food chain, which are relevant to dietary risk, were assessed. The δ15N values fell in a narrow range, which indicates a relatively short food chain, which is due to overfishing in this area. Furthermore, in this shortened food chain, the trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranged from 0.23 to 6.6, which were generally higher than those in more complex food chains. The cancer risk (ILCR) ranged from 2.2 × 10−8 to 2.2 × 10−6. It is noted that the carcinogenic risk of consuming yellow croaker, which is one of the most popular seafood among people on the east coast of China, was the highest. In conclusion, trophic magnification implied a possible elevated risk through this marine food chain, and overfishing may have increased the uncertainty associated with TMF estimations. Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) levels were determined in surface water, groundwater and sediments of the Jin River Basin, southeastern China. PFOA was detected in most of the samples, and its concentrations ranged from 0.53 to 8.77 ng/L, 0.26 to 15.1 ng/L and not detected (ND) to 23.9 ng/g in surface water, groundwater and sediments, respectively. Unlike PFOA, the detection frequency of PFOS was lower than 32%, and its concentrations ranged from ND to 2.56 ng/L, ND to 7.01 ng/L, ND to 11.1 ng/g in surface water, groundwater and sediments, respectively. The environmental risk assessment showed that PFOA could pose a high risk to surface water and groundwater, and both PFOA and PFOS posed a high risk to sediments. The present study investigated phthalate esters (PAEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in agricultural soils and vegetables from eastern China. The concentrations of PAEs ranged from 109 to 5560 ng/g in soils and 60.1 to 2390 ng/g in cabbages, with average concentrations of 946 and 601 ng/g, respectively. The concentrations of OCPs ranged from <0.1 to 662 ng/g in soils and <0.1 to 42.8 ng/g in cabbages, with average concentrations of 134 and 11.6 ng/g, respectively. OCPs were mainly in the 0-30 cm surface soil layers, while PAEs could infiltrate in deep soil profiles to 70-80 cm layer. Potential source analysis traced the occurrence of OCPs to both historical application and current usage, whereas building materials and agricultural plastic film were possible input sources of PAEs in the ambient environment. OCPs showed no apparent effect on soil microbial communities, whereas significant negative relationship was observed between PAEs and fungi in soils ( R = −0.54, p < 0.01). Human health risk assessment data revealed marginal noncarcinogenic risks and low carcinogenic risks in these soils. Notably, PAEs posed a comparable or higher risk level compared with that of OCPs. The distribution, sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in surface sediments from the Haihe River. Total PAH concentrations varied from 171.4 to 9511.2 ng g with an average of 2125.4 ng g, suggesting serious pollution of the Haihe River in comparison with other reported rivers worldwide. PAH contaminants differed significantly among 17 sampling locations with high values occurring in industrial areas and densely populated areas. The composition of PAHs was characterized by high abundance of 4-ring and 5-ring PAHs, and benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, and benzo[a]pyrene were the predominant components. Molecular diagnostic ratios have confirmed that PAHs in Haihe River sediments resulted from mixed sources, primarily including various combustion processes. Ecological risk assessment using the Sediments Quality Guidelines indicated that PAHs in sediments could cause certain negative effects on aquatic organisms in most survey regions. The Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve is a nature reserve and a site for the study of tropical and subtropical forest ecosystems. Rapid industrialization and intensive electronic waste-recycling activities around the biosphere reserve have resulted in elevated levels of industrial organic contaminants in the local environment that may cause adverse effects on wildlife that inhabits this area. In the present study, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 2 alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs)-decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE)-were investigated in the biosphere reserve and a reference site by using the kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis) as a bioindicator. Residue concentrations in kingfishers from the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve ranged from 490 ng/g to 3000 ng/g, 51 ng/g to 420 ng/g, 0.44 ng/g to 90 ng/g, and 0.04 ng/g to 0.87 ng/g lipid weight for ∑PCBs, ∑PBDEs, DBDPE, and BTBPE, respectively. With the exception of the BTBPE, these levels were 2 to 5 times higher than those detected in kingfishers from the reference site. The contaminant patterns from the biosphere reserve were also different, with larger PCB contributions in comparison with the reference site. The estimated predator-prey biomagnification factors (BMFs) showed that most of the PCB and PBDE congeners and BTBPE were biomagnified in kingfishers from the biosphere reserve. The calculated toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) concentrations of major coplanar PCB congeners in kingfishers from the biosphere reserve ranged from 18 pg/g to 66 pg/g wet weight, with some of these TEQ concentrations reaching or exceeding the levels known to impair bird reproduction and survival. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the most widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs). It has been detected in various environment media and has been approved to be high toxic to aquatic organisms. However, the exposure levels of TBBPA in the main watersheds in China have not been investigated sufficiently. In this study TBBPA concentrations in water, sediment and tissues of four fish species from Lake Chaohu were determined. Spatial and temporal distribution patterns of TBBPA in water and sediment, and the relationship among TBBPA concentrations in fish tissues and fish size were analyzed. The results showed that the maximum TBBPA concentration in sediment was 518 ng/g in March 2008. It is almost the highest value than those ever reported anywhere in the world. In lake water, TBBPA level reached the maximum value of 4.87 μg/L in July. Tissue distributions of TBBPA in four fish species were similar, and the mean concentrations in the fish were in the range of 28.5-39.4 ng/g, much higher than those reported in Japan, Europe, and the United States. The maximum concentrations of TBBPA were found in kidneys where TBBPA concentration was positively correlated with fish size of Cyprinus carpio. Results demonstrated a widespread distribution of TBBPA in Lake Chaohu. The source was mainly inflow rivers near the cities. The distribution coefficient among water, fish, and sediment was 1:28:117. Ten perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were measured in seafood collected from Bohai Bay, China in 2010. The summed concentrations of the PFAAs were in the ranges of not detected to 194 ng/g dry weight and 4.0 to 304 ng/g dry weight for invertebrates and fish, respectively. The levels of perflurooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the seafood were lower than those from North America, the Mediterranean Sea, and South Korea. Living habitat, trophic level, and feeding habits had important impacts on the bioaccumulation and distribution of PFAAs in the seafood. The species at higher trophic levels had the potential to accumulate more PFAAs than benthic invertebrates. Tidal-flat organisms tended to accumulate more PFOA than PFOS, whereas the opposite was seen for shallow-water species. For all the species, PFOS and PFOA were partitioned preferentially in the liver or viscera. In the present study, the levels of 14 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were analyzed in the blood, liver, muscle, brain, and eggs of popular farmed freshwater fish from Beijing. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the predominant compound in all samples, with the highest concentration at 70.7 ng/g wet weight. The highest mean levels of PFOS in all tissues were observed in bighead (1.48-22.5 ng/g wet wt) and the lowest in tilapia (0.260-1.63 ng/g wet wt). In addition, perfluoroundecanoic acid was the second dominant PFC in blood, liver, muscle, and eggs, with the highest concentration at 19.2 ng/g wet weight. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose great risks to lake ecosystem and human health. Comprehensive knowledge on PAHs in lakes is critical for their risk control. 118 samples were collected from different environmental medium to study the occurrence and fluxes of 16 PAH in Lake Taihu. The average ∑PAH16 in air, water, phytoplankton, zooplankton, suspended particle matter, and surface sediments were 122 ng m−3, 61.3 ng L−1, 6500 ng g−1, 4940 ng g−1, 27,900 ng g−1, and 522 ng g−1, respectively. Sediments were contaminated by PAHs from pyrogenic sources. The average fluxes of air–water, dry deposition, and sinking of the 16 individual PAHs were 2900, 300, and 251 ng m−2 d−1. In the air–water column-surface sediments system, air–water exchange was the main transport pathway. In order to ensure safety of drinking water resources for local residence, the governments are suggested to work together to reduce PAHs emission and implement new energy policy. Throughout continents, reservoirs tend to have elevated methylmercury (MeHg) concentration transformed from mercury (Hg/total Hg). This impact may be pronounced in the reservoir with less velocity of water during the charging period resulted in the deposition of sediments. In sediments on favorable conditions, methylation may be enhanced by the decomposition of flood organic material, which can release Hg and enhance microbial activity. However, much less is known about the transfer ratio of Hg and its form MeHg from sediment to biota in the hydrological reservoir during the dam charging phase. The objective of our study was to understand the interrelationship between total Hg and MeHg in two key components sediment and fish in the reservoir ecosystem. This study was performed at the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) located on upstream of the Yangtze River in China. At the TGR charging phase, during winter time, the water level was high due to blockade of water by Three Gorges Dam (TGD). Sediment and fish samples were collected in winter season for total Hg, MeHg, and several ancillary parameters. The results showed that total Hg in sediment samples of the winter season were ranged from 6.2 ± 0.001 to 193.3 ± 0.001 × 10−3 mg/kg, with an average value of 53.76 ± 51.80 × 10−3 mg/kg, and for MeHg was ranged from 12.1 ± 0.04 to 348.7 ± 0.16 × 10−2 ng/g, with an average value of 98.96 ± 93.07 × 10−2 ng/g. Total Hg and MeHg in fish samples of the winter season were from 42.48 ± 6.71 to 166 ± 52.56 ng/g, with an average value of 76.22 ± 31.23 ng/g, and from 21.09 ± 2.31 to 61.60 ± 13.30 ng/g, with an average value of 37.89 ± 11.96 ng/g. The relationship of total Hg and MeHg concentrations in fish to those of sediments from corresponding sites showed a negative relationship. This might include a strong association of total Hg with an inorganic component of sediment (e.g., bound to sulfides or coprecipitated with other metal oxides such as manganese and iron). The average concentration of fish MeHg found in this study, at rates greater than 1.72 g/day, was estimated hazardous to human health. This study concludes sediment was acting as sequestrate for total Hg and MeHg in TGR. The beta-carbolines norharman and harman, two heterocyclic aromatic amines with potential mutagenicity, have been determined in vegetable oils. Identification and analysis were carried out by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). In 88 samples analysed, the concentrations of norharman and harman were < LOD to 336.22 ng/g and < LOD to 505.14 ng/g, respectively. A high variability of norharman and harman levels among different oil types was observed. Sesame-, flaxseed-, sunflower seed-, peanut- and rapeseed oils were most contaminated. Both β-carbolines were most likely formed during roasting of the oilseeds. Oil consumption, especially of oils obtained after roasting of the seeds, was a major dietary source of the β-carbolines norharman and harman. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. SCCPs have persistence, bioaccumulation, long-range environmental mobility and biological toxicity, significant toxicity to aquatic organisms, and potential carcinogenicity. Little study was on the progress research on the current environmental pollution in China. We reviewed the pollution conditions of SCCPs in air, soil, and water and their accumulation in food and organisms in China, especially for the contaminations of aquatic ecosystem. Meanwhile, we summarize the recent studies on the toxic effects and toxicological mechanisms of SCCPs on aquatic organisms and mammals. Finally, the further direction and trends for SCCP research were proposed. Principal component analysis (PCA), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and the mean effects range-median quotient (MERM-Q) models were employed to determine occurrence levels, sources, and potential toxicological significance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the Yellow River Estuary, China. Due to the grain size of sediments, cumulative effects, and distribution of oil fields, the total concentration of the 16 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) priority PAHs (T-PAHs) measured in sediments along transects in the offshore area was 119.51 ± 39.58 ng g−1 dry weight (dw), which is notably higher than that measured in rivers (75.00 ± 12.56 ng g−1 dw) and estuaries (67.94 ± 10.20 ng g−1 dw). PAH levels decreased seaward along all the studied transects in coastal Bohai Bay. Multivariate statistical analyses supported that PAHs in sediments were principally derived from coal and biomass combustion, oil pollution, and vehicular emissions. Based on the MERM-Q (0.0050 ± 0.0017), PAHs were at low potential of ecotoxicological contamination level. Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in surface soils of Datuo karst Tiankeng (large sinkholes) in South China with the use of a gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) system. This paper provides data on the levels and distribution of PAHs from the top to the bottom of the Datuo karst Tiankeng. The results showed that the sum of the 16 EPA priority PAHs from the sampled locations from top to bottom had a relative increment in PAHs concentration. ∑PAHs ranged from 16.93 ng/g to 68.07 ng/g with a mean concentration of 42.15 ng/g. The correlated results showed the bottom of the large sinkhole, which accounts for the higher concentrations, probably acts like a trap for the PAHs. Concentrations of HCH isomers, DDT, and its metabolites have been measured in 63 soil samples collected in the urban area and outskirts of Beijing City. HCHs and DDTs were observed in all samples and their geometric mean levels were 5.78 and 38.21 ng g−1, respectively. The spatial distribution of OCPs in Beijing was clearly showed by the contour map, suggesting the sites with the higher level of OCPs are located in the west and the south region and urban areas within the study regions.” Furthermore, a t-test showed a significant difference of the level of some compounds between urban and outskirts areas. The temporal distribution of HCHs and DDTs suggested that the historical application of OCPs has a great effect on the residual level. Samples of surface sediment and shellfish were collected from Minjiang Estuary-Mazu and Xiamen-Jinmen sea areas and were analyzed for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyl-trichlorophenyl (DDT) and its degraded derivatives dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethane (DDT) and dichloro-dichlorophenyl-ethylene (DDE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by gas chromatography. Concentration ranges of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs in the sediments were 0.03–0.48, 1.10–14.3, and ND to 0.76 ng/g dw, respectively; those for shellfish samples were ND to 1.5, 21.5–892, dw and ND–3.7 ng/g dw, respectively. The results showed that the concentrations of such oganochlorine compounds (OCs) in the sediments were usually low as compared with other sea areas and estuaries, and the organochlorines were accumulated in marine bivalve mollusks, particularly in oyster. With respect to the concentrations of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs in the samples of either sediment or shellfish, DDTs were higher than HCHs and PCBs. The concentrations of OCs in shellfish samples varied with the sampling locations and organism species but were generally higher than those in the sediments. It is well established that arsenic (As) has many toxic compounds, and in particular, inorganic As (iAs) has been classified as a type-1 carcinogen. The measuring of As species in rice flour is of great importance since rice is a staple of the diet in many countries and a major contributor to As intake in the Asian diet. In this study, several solvents and techniques for the extraction of As species from rice flour samples prior to their analysis by HPLC-ICP-MS were investigated. The extraction methods were examined for their efficiency in extracting various arsenicals from a rice flour certified reference material, NMIJ-7532a, produced by the National Metrology Institute of Japan. Results show that ultrasound-assisted extraction at 60 °C for 1 h and then heating at 100 °C for 2.5 h in the oven using a thermostable α-amylase aqueous solution was highly effective in liberating the arsenic species. The recoveries of iAs and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in NMIJ-7532a were 99.7% ± 1.6% (n = 3) and 98.1% ± 2.3% (n = 3), respectively, in comparison with the certificated values. Thus, the proposed extraction method is a green procedure that does not use any acidic, basic, or organic solvents. Moreover, this extraction method could effectively maintain the integrity of the native arsenic species of As(III), As(V), monomethylarsonate (MMA), DMA, arsenobetaine (AsB) and arsenocholine (AsC). Under the optimum extraction, chromatography and ICP-MS conditions, the limits of detection (LOD) obtained were 0.47 ng g−1, 1.67 ng g−1 and 0.80 ng g−1 for As(III), As(V) and DMA, respectively, while the limits of quantification (LOQ) achieved were 1.51 ng g−1, 5.34 ng g−1 and 2.57 ng g−1 for As(III), As(V) and DMA, respectively. Estuarine sediment quality is highly associated with anthropogenic activities in watersheds. This study attempts to couple socioeconomic patterns with estuarine sediment quality via legacy organochlorines in 14 Chinese coastal watersheds. Sedimentary concentrations of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs showed a significant spatiality in estuary, up to 48.7 ± 15.1, 89.0 ± 46.4, and 54.5 ± 17.2 ng g−1, which were predominated by β-HCH, p,p′-DTs, and tri- to penta-PCBs, respectively. Ecological risk of organochlorines was negligible except few moderate risks for DDTs and PCBs against the first class quality of the marine sediment quality guidelines of China. Sedimentary DDT and PCB concentrations were significantly delineated by an environmental Kuznets curve model as a function of non-agricultural GDP per capita in watersheds, while HCHs by an increasing linear model. Takeaway food has become a prominent component of the diet in urban areas of China, especially for young people. Although dietary intake is a major pathway to contaminants for human exposure, studies on emerging organophosphite antioxidants (OPAs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in food are scarce. Here, we investigated four OPAs and 19 OPEs in takeaway foods (n = 99) and paired takeaway food packaging (n = 50) in China. AO168=O (mean: 14.9 ng/g ww), TPPO (mean: 1.05 ng/g ww), and TCIPP (mean: 0.579 ng/g ww) were dominant in the takeaway food. Some OPEs had significant correlations in takeaway food. Emerging OPAs and OPEs in takeaway food varied significantly depending on the packaging materials and food types. AO168 and AO168=O were widespread in the paired takeaway food packaging. The migration efficiencies of emerging OPAs and OPEs were low in takeaway food packaged in aluminum foil. Although the actual contamination of emerging OPAs and OPEs in takeaway food significantly differed from those of in food simulants migrated from paired takeaway food packaging, the results imply that food itself and takeaway food packaging are potential contamination sources of emerging OPAs and OPEs in takeaway food. The average estimated dietary intakes of emerging OPAs and OPEs were 465 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day and 91.9 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. To investigate the spatial and temporal distribution, sources, and ecological risk of soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China's urban agglomerations from 2000 to 2020, a comprehensive search strategy was employed using the keywords "soil", "PAHs", and "city". A total of 122 relevant studies that provided information on individual PAH content during the specified time period were collected. These studies encompassed 20 urban agglomerations in China, which were further categorized into two distinct periods: 2000 to 2010 and 2011 to 2020. The diagnostic ratio method and principal component analysis were employed to identify the sources of PAHs, and a risk quotient model was used to evaluate the soil ecological risk. The results revealed the average PAH content in the 20 urban agglomerations in China from 2011 to 2020 was 2,439 ± 4,633 ng·g-1, which exceeded the severe pollution level cut-off (> 1,000 ng·g-1). The soil PAH content in the period from 2011 to 2020 decreased by 28% compared to the soil PAH content in the period from 2000 to 2010. Soil PAH pollution was more severe in the northern urban agglomerations than in the southern urban agglomerations. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis demonstrated that the principal sources in most urban agglomerations in China were traffic and coal combustion. GeoDetector found that coal and fuel oil consumption were the main factors affecting the spatial differentiation of PAHs. The ecological risk quotient showed that approximately 80% of the urban agglomerations were at a medium-high ecological risk from 2000 to 2010, compared with 72% from 2011 to 2020. Understanding the subduction-driven recycling of economically important chalcophile metals (e.g., Cu, Au, Ag, and platinum-group elements, PGEs) and volatiles (e.g., sulfur) is critical for assessing models of ore formation. However, whether the sulfide remains stable in recycled altered oceanic crust (AOC) in the mantle is unclear, and the influence of AOC-derived metasomatic agents on the extraction efficiency of chalcophile elements from the deep mantle remains poorly understood. Here we report whole-rock Cu-Ag-Au-Re-PGEs of Cenozoic alkaline basalts at Hannuoba, eastern China, which were derived from the interaction of carbonated eclogite (recycled AOC)-derived melts with lithospheric peridotites. Volatile-rich primitive melts from carbonated eclogite are poor in strongly chalcophile metals (e.g., ∑PGE < 1 ng/g, Au < 1 ng/g, Cu < 30 μg/g). Remarkably, primitive melts show significant fractionation of elements with variable chalcophile affinities, such as lower Cu/Ag ratios than those in primitive mantle and MORBs. These features reflect the sequestration of these metals in residual mono-sulfide solid solution (MSS) during low-degree melting of the AOC in the deep mantle. Given the retention of sulfides in the AOC, partial melts derived from it are rich in sulfur but poor in strongly chalcophile metals. The Hannuoba alkaline melts scavenged some strongly chalcophile metals from peridotites (especially PGEs) during their ascent. However, this did not necessarily lead to the formation of chalcophile metal-enriched melts (e.g., Au < 1 ng/g and Cu < 60 μg/g). These processes appear to be common in eastern China, as evidenced by the low abundances of Cu and Au found in many primitive intraplate alkaline basalts. We propose that strongly chalcophile elements in subducted AOC are efficiently transported into, and stored in, the deep mantle, with a small proportion returning to the exosphere through volcanism. Moreover, the chalcophile metal-poor and volatile-rich melts of subducted AOC could also explain the addition of abundant sulfur (secondary sulfides), but limited chalcophile metals to the metasomatized mantle. China, one of the two dechlorane plus (DP) producers, might have become a major area of DP pollution. The environmental contamination status of DP in sediments across the whole of China has not yet been studied. In the current study, the pollution levels, spatial distribution, and compositions of DP were investigated comprehensively in surface sediments from 173 black-odorous urban rivers across China for the first time. Total DP concentrations varied from not-detected to 39.71 ng/g dw, with an average concentration of 3.20 ± 4.74 ng/g dw, which was polluted by local emission sources and presented significant differences among different sampling cities. Among the seven administrative regions of China, DP concentrations were the highest in South China and showed a decreasing trend from southeastern coastal areas to northwest inland regions. Spearman's correlation analysis suggested that the gross industrial output, gross domestic product, and daily wastewater treatment capacity were not the principal factors controlling the spatial distribution of DP. The fanti values (the concentration ratios of anti-DP to the sum of anti-DP and syn-DP) varied from 0.19 to 0.88, with those in most sediments falling in the range of DP technical product (0.60 ~ 0.80), suggesting no apparent stereoselective enrichment occurred. Moreover, the anti-Cl11-DP was detected in sediments (n.d. ~ 0.40 ng/g dw), which showed significantly and insignificantly positive correlation with the anti-DP levels and fanti, respectively, implying it might mainly originate from the byproduct of DP technical product rather than the dechlorination of anti-DP. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 128 soil samples collected from Xiangfen County, Shanxi Province, China. Sixteen PAH congeners were identified at high concentrations (89-100 %), with the exceptions of Ace and Acy, and were used for statistical analysis. PAH concentrations ranged from 51.91 to 10,523.58 ng/g with a mean of 722.35 ng/g indicating severe pollution at the sample sites. Four-ring PAHs were predominant followed by 3- and 5-ring PAHs. Coal combustion was found to be the greatest contributor of PAHs to the local environment. An analysis of the spatial distribution of PAHs indicated the presence of relatively high concentrations in the northwest region of the county. A source identification analysis showed that Wulidun in Fencheng Town, Shangbeirong Village in Gucheng Town, and Yandian Village in Xincheng Town were the major sources of PAHs in Xiangfen County. As organchlorine pesticides (OCPs) may be an ecologic threat to mountain environments due to their tendency to deposit and accumulate in mountain regions undergoing long-range air transport, OCPs were analyzed in soils collected from an intermontane basin of the western Tian Shan Mountains, which is the UNESCO protected natural reserve of Issyk-Kul. Total OCP concentrations in the Issyk-Kul region ranged from 4.63 to 414 ng/g dw, of which two extraordinary high OCP concentrations (414 ng/g dw and 213 ng/g dw, respectively) influenced by an abandoned dumping site and urban sewage, respectively, were found. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis inferred that the OCP inputs in the east of the Issyk-Kul region were mainly from local endogenous sources, and exogenous input via LRAT processes were prominent in the west and south. Additionally, the isomeric and parent substance/metabolite ratios revealed most pesticides accumulated in this region were from old usage, while DDTs had fresh input because of possibly illegal regional application and a slow degradation from the dumping site. Furthermore, ecological risk assessment revealed that no frequently adverse ecological effects were observed in the Issyk-Kul region, but potential risks on neighbouring organisms induced by p,p’-DDT and γ-HCH in dumping site and urban sewage should be considered when devising an efficient management plan to prevent secondary pollution. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in marine sediments sampled from an area affected by oil spills in Beibu Gulf, China, in order to determine the distribution and potential sources of these PAHs. The total PAHs concentrations presented a range from 11.30 to 141.56 ng/g with a mean value of 42.12 ng/g, which were relatively low compared to other bays around the world. The four-ring PAHs predominated in most sediment samples, accounting for an average of 41.25%. Principal component analyses (PCA) with multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used for PAHs source apportionment. The two receptor models both gave good correlation coefficients between predicted and observed PAHs concentrations (R² = 0.9982 to 0.9987). Three and five factors were obtained from PCA-MLR and PMF, respectively. One factor was identified by PCA as contributions from mixed sources of fuel combustion and coke production (51.44%). This factor was differentiated into two factors by PMF as contributions from fuel combustion (20.43%) and coke production (28.99%). Another PCA factor was attributed to combined coal combustion and crude oil pollution (35.23%). PMF also differentiated the factor into two factors, the percentages contributions of which were 23.10% and 13.27%, respectively. Numerous studies have reported polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in soil, root, and aerial parts of vegetables. However, few studies have measured the contribution of PCBs bound to particles in air in relation to uptake by vegetables. In the present study, PCB concentrations were measured in five types of vegetables, soil, and settled air particle samples from two sites (at a domestic waste incinerator and at 20 km away from the incinerator) in Guangzhou, South China. ∑PCB concentrations in rhizosphere soil samples from the two sites ranged from 17.2-77.7 to 5.48-25.57 ng/g, respectively. ∑PCB concentrations in aerial parts of vegetables were greater than those in rhizosphere soils and roots with median values of 108 and 47.08 ng/g, respectively. Among the five types of vegetables studied, the highest concentration of PCBs was found in bitter lettuce. No significant correlation between PCBs in soil and roots or aerial parts of vegetables was observed. However, principal component analysis indicated that settled air particles were the dominant source of PCBs in the aerial parts of vegetables. In addition, similar PCB congener profiles were found in the aerial parts of vegetables and settled air particles. This suggests that foliar uptake of PCBs is an important pathway. Auxin is involved in various developmental processes of plants, including cell division in cambium and xylem differentiation. However, most studies linking auxin and xylem cell production are performed in environments with a strong seasonality (i.e. temperate and boreal climates). The temporal dynamics of auxin and cambial activity of subtropical trees remain basically unknown. In this study, we sampled four microcores weekly in three individuals of Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) from February to December 2015–16 to compare xylem formation with auxin concentration in subtropical China. During the entire period of sampling, the number of cambial cells varied from 2 to 7, while the number of cells in the enlarging zone ranged from 1 to 4 and from 1 to 5 in the wall-thickening zone. In 2015, the average auxin concentration was 3.46 ng g−1, with 33 xylem cells being produced at the end of the year. In 2016, a lower auxin concentration (2.59 ng g−1) corresponded to a reduced annual xylem production (13.7 cells). No significant relationship between auxin concentration and number of xylem cells in differentiation was found at the weekly scale. Unlike in boreal and temperate forests, the lack of wood formation seasonality in subtropical forests makes it more difficult to reveal the relationship between auxin concentration and number of xylem cells in differentiation at the intra-annual scale. The occurrence and distribution of six phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in surface water and sediment of the Pearl River were investigated, including Xijiang River (XR), Beijiang River (BR), Lingdingyang Estuary (LE), and Guangzhou River (GR) in South China. Six target PAEs were identified in surface water and sediment at almost all sites in the Pearl River, with di(2-ethyl-ethyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as dominant PAEs. Total 6 PAEs (ΣPAEs) in surface water and sediment ranged from 1,797.5 to 4,968.5 ng L−1 and 95.24 to 3,677.26 ng g−1 dw, respectively. In addition, the contamination levels of PAEs in the Pearl River are in the following order: XR > BR > GR > LE for surface water and BR > XR > GR for sediment. Local agricultural activities, industrial production, water confluence, and seawater intrusion are the probable sources of PAEs in the Pearl River. Based on correlation analysis, the possible collocation patterns of different PAEs were revealed. The risk assessment indicates that residual PAEs in the Pearl River pose a serious threat to the ecological environment. Camellia chekiangoleosa Hu. is a unique woody oil tree with significant economic and ornamental value in China, but the fruit is easily sunburned in low-altitude areas. However, few studies on their sunburn mechanism, especially the types and content of endogenous hormones with stress resistance, have not been reported, making it challenging to take reasonable preventive measures. Here, we analyzed the endogenous hormones before sunburn and found that salicylic acid (SA) and gibberellins (GAs) were very significantly correlated between pericarp and seed kernel. However, there weren't closely related to abscisic acid (ABA), auxin, jasmonic acids (JAs), and cytokinin. The content of indole-3-carboxylic acid (ICA) and 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) in the pericarp was higher than in seed kernel, and IBA was only found in the pericarp. GAs in seed kernel were higher than that in pericarp, and GA3 and GA15 may regulate pericarp development. Contents of trans-Zeatin (tZ), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and GAs in seed kernel and pericarp gradually decreased to very low, while ABA and indole-3-carboxaldehyde (ICAld) gradually increased. SA was positively correlated with ABA in pericarp and GAs and SA in seed kernel and pericarp. JAs in fruit generally showed a downward trend, and methyl jasmonate (ME-JA) appeared in pericarp. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used as brominated flame retardants worldwide and are correlated with extensive environmental pollution and human health concerns. This study is aimed at analyzing the concentrations of PBDEs and at evaluating their temporal trends among a population of blood donors (n = 33) over a 4-year period. A total of 132 serum samples were used for PBDE detection. Nine PBDE congeners were quantified in serum samples by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The median concentrations of Σ9PBDEs in each year were 33.46, 29.75, 30.85, and 35.02 ng/g lipid, respectively. Most of the PBDE congeners showed a downward trend from 2013 to 2014 and then increased after 2014. No correlations between age and PBDE congener concentrations were observed, while concentrations of each congener and Σ9PBDE were nearly always lower in females than in males, especially in BDE-66, BDE-153, BDE-183, BDE-190, and Σ9PBDE. We also found that the intake of fish, fruit, and eggs in the daily diet was related to the exposure level of PBDEs. Our results suggest that, as deca-BDE is still produced and used in China, diet is an important exposure pathway for PBDEs, and follow-up studies will be required to improve our understanding of the behaviors of PBDE isomers in humans and the exposure levels. To clarify the impact of human activities on the natural environment, as well as the current ecological risks to the environment surrounding Zhushan Bay in Taihu Lake, the characteristics of deposited organic materials, including elements and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑16PAHs), in a sediment core from Taihu Lake were determined. The nitrogen (N), carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and sulfur (S) contents ranged from 0.08 to 0.3%, 0.83 to 3.6%, 0.63 to 1.12%, and 0.02 to 0.24%, respectively. The most abundant element in the core was C followed by H, S, and N, while elemental C and the C/H ratio displayed a decreasing trend with depth. The ∑16PAH concentration was in the range of 1807.48–4674.83 ng g−1, showing a downward trend with depth, with some fluctuations. Three-ring PAHs dominated in surface sediment, while 5-ring PAHs dominated at a depth of 55–93 cm. Six-ring PAHs appeared in the 1830s and gradually increased over time before slowly decreasing from 2005 onward due to the establishment of environmental protection measures. The ratio of PAH monomers indicated that PAHs in samples from a depth of 0 to 55 cm were mainly derived from the combustion of liquid fossil fuels, while the PAHs in the deeper samples mainly originated from petroleum. The results of a principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the PAHs in the sediment core of Taihu Lake were mainly derived from the combustion of fossil fuels, such as diesel, petroleum, gasoline, and coal. The contributions of biomass combustion, liquid fossil fuel combustion, coal combustion, and unknown source were 8.99%, 52.68%, 1.65%, and 36.68%, respectively. The results of a toxicity analysis indicated that most of the PAH monomers had little impact on the ecology, and the annual increase of a small number of monomers might have toxic effects on the biological community, resulting in a serious ecological risks, that requires the imposition of control measures. The sources and distribution characteristics of three phenolic endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), e.g., alkylphenols (APs) (including nonylphenols (NPs) and 4-t-octylphenol (OP)) and Bisphenol A (BPA), were investigated in the rivers of the Pearl River Delta Region (PRDR) with complex land-use types. The mean concentrations of NPs, OP, and BPA in river water including wet and dry seasons were 87, 6, and 74 ng/L in the agricultural regions (n = 10), 135, 7, and 61 ng/L in the transitional regions (n = 8), and 249, 15, and 152 ng/L in the urban regions (n = 28). Contents of NPs and BPA were high in the river sediments (ranged from 7 to 3048 ng/g and 2 to 271 ng/g, respectively). Equilibrium analysis results suggested that sediment release was not the main source of the river EDCs. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that sewage was the major source of EDCs in the dry season, while the leaching effect of rainfall on the agricultural soils, urban roads, and commercial products was an important source in the wet season. Furthermore, the ratio of APs and total concentration of phenolic EDCs (ΣEDCs) was used to characterize the agricultural regions and urban regions in the PRDR. The ratio was less than 0.6 in the agricultural regions while the ratio was large than 0.6 in the dry season and less than 0.6 in the wet season in urban regions. This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and source of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Hanjiang River Basin and the Danjiangkou (DJK) Reservoir. The concentrations of total PAHs in surface water, sediments, and bank soils ranged from 9.42 to 137.94 ng/l, 86.23 to 2514.93 ng/g, and 133.17 to 671.93 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The composition pattern of PAHs showed that 3-ring PAHs were dominated in all of the samples, while the proportion of high molecular weight PAHs (5- to 6-ring PAHs) in sediments and bank soil samples was almost three times higher than water. The source apportionment analysis showed that most of the PAHs in water were derived from sources of petroleum and combustion, while combustion was the predominant source of PAHs in sediments and bank soils. The methods based on toxic equivalency factors, risk quotient, and incremental lifetime cancer risk were used to assess the ecosystem risk and potential health risk of PAHs. The content, source, and pollution level of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soils are necessary to assess potential risks to eco-environment and human health, and to target environment-friendly policies. A total of 50 surface soil samples were collected from urban vegetable fields of Jilin City and thirteen OCPs were analyzed. The concentrations were in the ranges of 3.16–48.35 ng·g−1for Dichloro-Diphenyl-Tricgloroethanes (DDTs, sum of o, p′-DDT, p, p′-DDT, p, p′-DDD, and p, p′-DDE), 4.37–44.77 ng·g−1for Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs, sum of α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, and δ-HCH), 1.19–13.17 ng·g−1for Chlordanes (sum of heptachlor, t-chlordane, and c-chlordane), 0.24–2.60 ng·g−1for aldrin, and nd–3.43 ng·g−1for dieldrin, respectively. The different compositions indicated that the residues of DDTs and HCHs originated mainly from the historical application, while chlordanes were mostly from recent input. On the basis of soil quality standards of China and the Netherlands, DDTs and chlordanes in this study were categorized as light pollution, and HCHs were classified as no pollution for the majority of soil samples. This study investigated environmental distribution and human exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in one Chinese petroleum refinery facility. It was found that, following with high concentrations of 16 EPA PAHs (∑Parent-PAHs) in smelting subarea of studied petroleum refinery facility, total derivatives of PAHs [named as XPAHs, including nitro PAHs (NPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), and brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs)] in gas (mean= 1.57 × 104 ng/m3), total suspended particulate (TSP) (mean= 4.33 × 103 ng/m3) and soil (mean= 4.37 × 103 ng/g) in this subarea had 1.76–6.19 times higher levels than those from other subareas of this facility, surrounding residential areas and reference areas, indicating that petroleum refining processes would lead apparent derivation of PAHs. Especially, compared with those in residential and reference areas, gas samples in the petrochemical areas had higher ∑NPAH/∑PAHs (mean=2.18), but lower ∑Cl-PAH/∑PAHs (mean=1.43 × 10−1) and ∑Br-PAH/∑PAHs ratios (mean=7.49 × 10−2), indicating the richer nitrification of PAHs than chlorination during petrochemical process. The occupational exposure to PAHs and XPAHs in this petroleum refinery facility were 24–343 times higher than non-occupational exposure, and the ILCR (1.04 × 10−4) for petrochemical workers was considered to be potential high risk. Furthermore, one expanded high-resolution screening through GC Orbitrap/MS was performed for soils from petrochemical area, and another 35 PAHs were found, including alkyl-PAHs, phenyl-PAHs and other species, indicating that profiles and risks of PAHs analogs in petrochemical areas deserve further expanded investigation. Background: Thorium is ubiquitous in the environment and its relationship with birth defects is still under discussion. This study aimed to investigate the associations of maternal exposure to thorium with risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) by using a case–control study, as well as the relationship between thorium exposure and the indoor air pollution from coal combustion. Methods: This study was conducted in 11 local healthcare hospitals during 2003–2007 in Shanxi and Hebei provinces, China. A total of 774 mothers were included as participants who delivering 263 fetuses with NTDs including 123 with anencephaly, 115 with spina bifida, 18 with encephalocele, and 7 other NTD subtypes (cases), and 511 health fetuses without NTDs (controls). Their hair samples were collected as close as to the occipital posterior scalp, of which those grew from 3 months before to 3 months after conception was cut to measure the thorium concentration by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Results: We found a higher hair thorium concentration in the total NTD cases with 0.901 (0.588–1.382) ng/g hair [median (inter-quartile range)] than that in the controls with a value of 0.621 (0.334–1.058) ng/g hair. Similar results were found for the three concerned NTD subtypes. Maternal hair thorium concentration above its median of the controls was associated with an increased risk of the total NTDs with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.80 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.23–2.63)] by adjusting for all confounders. There was obvious dose-response relationship between maternal hair thorium concentration and the risk of total NTDs, as well as their two subtypes (i.e. anencephaly and spina bifida). Maternal hair thorium concentration was positive associated with their exposure level to indoor air pollution from coal combustion during cooking. Conclusions: Overall, our findings revealed that maternal periconceptional thorium exposure was associated with the risk of NTDs in North China.
