Fifty years ago, the expansion of access to higher education was expected to result in greater socio-economic equality. Instead, segmentation in mass higher education systems has called into question the effective democratization of access to higher education. This phenomenon appeared first in higher income countries, allowing the identification of some factors that contribute to segmentation. This article seeks to provide evidence from the Chilean case, evaluating how students' social backgrounds affect admission to different types of universities. Data for the study were taken from the applications of 57,780 students admitted in 2019. Multinomial logistic regression was employed. The results showed that, depending on their background, students of the same level of academic performance follow different paths. Students from families with a high level of income or graduated from private secondary school were more likely to be admitted to private universities. Some of the dynamics present in European countries and the United States are also observed in Chile, particularly those related to the segregation of the school system and private provision and funding at the tertiary level.

How does a policy of free tuition affect student applications to universities? This article assesses how free tuition influences applications in terms of the selectivity of the university, length of the degree program, cost of the program, and application to a program in the STEM field. The study based on a quasi-experimental design was carried out in Chile using OLS, regression adjustment and matching analysis, and governmental data. Participants in the study were 384,830 applicants from three cohorts of high school graduates who applied to 30 selective universities. Two groups of applicants were compared: those who applied in 2015, before the introduction of free tuition; and those who applied in 2016 and 2017, when free tuition was introduced. The comparison was made considering the group with the lowest family income. Except for cost, the results show that the offer of free tuition had a small impact on the choices of applicants. With free tuition, a few more students applied to higher cost programs. The response may be explained in part by the fact that free education replaced the financing mechanism based on scholarships and loans, which covered a large part of the costs of the degree programs.

In Chile many university students do not persist to graduation. Some students dropped out in the first year, others later. The objective of this study, based on students admitted to but not graduating from selective universities, was to identify factors associated with their academic success and length of persistence before withdrawal. The 707 subjects for the study were a non-probabilistic sample of two cohorts of students who had withdrawn from 11 selective universities before graduation. One cohort of students had been admitted in 2010. The second cohort for this study was composed of students entering in 2016 and 2017. Data was collected in 2021 from university records and a questionnaire survey of the students. Pre-university measures included family education and income, secondary level academic performance, and cognitive knowledge. In-university measures included academic performance, and scales representing academic resources, family stability, non-student work, and engagement in social and academic activities. Data were analysed using correlations, means tests and linear regression. Pre-university (family and secondary school) factors influenced academic success in the first year of enrolment but not in later years. Academic success in the first year of university had the highest overall association with persistence. After Year 1 other factors contributed.

Some universities, often the most prestigious in a higher education system, select qualified applicants solely on the basis of their measured academic or cognitive abilities. The universities' assumption is that these cognitive abilities are an accurate and complete measure of the applicants' capacity to benefit from university study. This study assesses the extent to which the cognitive measures used are partially the result of other, non-cognitive factors unrelated to future academic performance. Sole reliance on cognitive measures skews university admission in favour of those of higher socioeconomic status. Data for the study were collected by the University of Chile's Department of Evaluation, Measurement and Educational Registration (DEMRE) from 190,000 applicants seeking admission to Chile's 39 selective universities in 2019. The analysis identifies the direct and indirect effects of variables measuring applicants' cognitive and non-cognitive attributes. Logistic regression models were constructed to estimate the differential effect of the two types of factors on admission. The results indicate that non-cognitive factors have an indirect effect on admission through their effect on cognitive scores. Access to selective universities in Chile is partially influenced by students' prior social, cultural, and economic conditions. As a consequence, university education is distributed partially on the basis of social origin and not just ability. The admission process should be changed to reduce discrimination against applicants based on their social origin.

Purpose: The job satisfaction of university graduates can serve as an indicator of success in their professional development. At the same time, it can be a measure of higher education systems' effectiveness. The purpose is to assess the relationship of university graduates' socio-demographic characteristics, aspects of their degree program, experiences in the labor market and current working conditions and their job satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected from a survey conducted at 11 Chilean universities with 534 graduates. An ordinal logistic regression model was fit to calculate job satisfaction probabilities for different graduate profiles. Findings: The results show that sex, field of study, gross salary and horizontal match are related to graduates' job satisfaction. Men and graduates in education and humanities are more likely to report being satisfied with their current job. Those graduates receiving higher salaries and those who are horizontally well-matched report higher levels of job satisfaction. Originality/value: This study contributes to expanding knowledge about the job satisfaction of university graduates. Specifically, based on the results obtained, it introduces the idea of aspiration fulfillment as a possible determinant of job satisfaction in different fields of study. This can serve as a starting point for research that delves into differentiated expectations for graduates from different disciplines.

The benefits of growth in university enrolments are contingent on the articulation of university expansion with changes in other areas, particularly the economy. The costs of a mismatch are felt at the societal level, but especially by individual graduates. This article describes problems faced by professionals in one country that has experienced very rapid expansion of higher education in a highly privatised market economy. While not uniformly generalisable to other countries, the results are illustrative of what can occur. The study is based on subjective information provided by Chilean university graduates who have recently sought employment. The graduates' narratives can be aligned along three major dimensions of dissatisfaction: labour force entry; earnings; and working conditions. The themes are linked and combine to describe a difficult transition from university to work in a context of low salaries and unstable and uncertain employment. Among factors contributing to unfulfilment of aspirations are the graduates' social capital and socioeconomic status, the geographic location of the job, the university from which they graduated, and activities while a student. Unsynchronised expansion of different social institutions can reduce social equity and cohesion.

This study analyzed the trajectories of five twice-exceptional students during their first year of higher education. The aim was to identify the personal and contextual barriers they faced and the enabling factors available to them. Based on a qualitative approach and a multiple-case design, narrative interviews were conducted with the participants. Three main themes emerged from the thematic analysis: (1) higher education learning; (2) twice-exceptional student identity; and (3) educational trajectory. Results revealed that, despite the challenges of higher education transition, participants view the experience positively for its diversity and pluralism, which enable them to access a broad knowledge base, achieve greater self-knowledge, and construct an identity as twice-exceptional students. It also gives them the opportunity to analyze their educational trajectory and the turning points that have shaped it. The results serve to guide twice-exceptional students through their university experience, to ease their transition to higher education, and to promote their academic and socio-emotional well-being. Furthermore, they support the formulation of educational strategies and policies that address the specific needs of twice-exceptional students and promote their academic success in higher education.

This descriptive and interpretative study accounts for results of representations regarding teaching profession which students of initial teaching training report in seven state Chilean Higher Education institutions. This study arises from the updating of the national education quality assurance system in which the obligation to apply a diagnostic test is established. For such a purpose, the study population was composed by 1836 students from 2019 cohort of pedagogical programs from this national universities. A Likert - like scale instrument was applied. Numerical descriptive and inferential methods were applied to analyze the information. Generally concluding, common representations are revealed a professional performance regardless of the sex; it suggests that the evaluated subjects shape a clearly modeled professional identity before starting their Initial Teaching Training.

Enrollments in higher education have expanded greatly, but without elimination of all forms of inequality. Research in industrialized countries has shown that the path students follow in their transition from secondary school continues to be associated with their social class. This study provides quantitative evidence of that relationship in a non-industrial country like Chile. Multinomial logistic and linear regression of university admission data managed by the Department of Evaluation, Measurement and Registration describing 130,000 applicants for the years 2015 and 2017 were used to estimate the probability of a member of a particular social class choosing a given university and academic field of study. The results show differences regarding law programs and science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. Class differences were particularly important in the choice of university. Working-class students were more likely to apply to public universities, avoiding elite and especially private institutions. The findings provide further support for Bourdieu's habitus explanation of class reproduction. They suggest more attention to the level of segregation in Chilean higher education and the factors that produce it.

Generativity, manifested through interest in and commitment to the development of future generations, is a relevant dimension of teaching culture. Objective: To characterize the personal and professional development manifested by educators working in rural schools in Chile. Method: An interpretative-qualitative approach was adopted, based on an exploratory, cross-sectional and non-experimental design. The purposive sample consisted of 18 educators with an average age of 60 and with 33 years of professional experience in rural schools in the Metropolitan, Araucanía and Los Ríos regions (Chile). For the data collection, in-depth interviews were conducted from a narrative-generative perspective. The narratives were analyzed by means of content analysis. Results: Four categories were identified relating to generativity--significant life experiences, pedagogical dimensions of generative development, generative-expansive adulthood and personal formation. The implications of generativity for teaching practice and the way in which it shapes the educational legacy that transcends school space and time are discussed.

Attitude towards English as a foreign language is a new field of study in tertiary education in Latin-American countries, especially in Chile. However, its importance in the process of learning a language has been reported upon around the world. The aim of the current study was to identify the attitudes towards English as a foreign language of 131 university students from different educational institutions in Chile; the students' programs included English courses as part of their study plan. The three components of attitude were analyzed by means of the participants' replies to the statements of a questionnaire. Results gave evidence that university students hold a positive attitude towards English as a foreign language; nonetheless, the behavioral aspect of attitude obtained the lowest average of agreement among the respondents.

This study, carried out in Chile, describes difficulties in the incorporation of employability as an objective in the training of psychologists. Prior research emphasized confusion of key actors about how to train and measure employability. To illustrate that confusion, we compared perspectives of university Psychology department heads and employers of their graduates. Semi-structured interviews revealed understandings of various elements in the employment process. The department heads began by describing the process and criteria they follow to design, operate and assess their programs. Employers described the skills they have looked for when hiring graduates. Where possible the study notes the match between university training objectives and employer preferences. The skills promoted by universities and employers match on only some dimensions. 'Employability' varies in meaning across actors, occupations, and contexts. At present, universities and employers have little understanding of what the other seeks to accomplish.

In 2016, Chile implemented a policy of free higher education (gratuity) for secondary school graduates from families in the lower income range. One of the stated objectives of the new policy was to increase the access of secondary school graduates from families with lower levels of education. To answer that concern, we analyzed administrative data from more than 800,000 students seeking university admission in 2012, 2015, and 2019. Our objective was to determine whether an increased proportion of "first-generation" students had been admitted to selective universities. The results show that between 2015 and 2019, the impact of the gratuity on first-generation admissions was marginal. It was of some importance only for those secondary school graduates from public schools and those who had been enrolled in the technical-professional track. The enrollment rate of these groups increased 2.2 and 2.7%, respectively. In sum, the effect of the introduction of gratuity on enrollment of first-generation students was not as impressive as expected. It has acted principally as an alternative source of finance, reducing use of other forms such as bank loans and scholarships. These results challenge directly the hypothesis that inequity in access to university is primarily attributable to financial difficulties.

The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions that teachers in urban and rural schools have of the psycho-social-environmental factors that trigger teacher work stress. Considering a phenomenological qualitative approach, with exploratory scope, a case study design is used with teachers from the locality of Collipulli, southern Chile, with a Discussion Group technique to collect data and content analysis, from which it can be inferred that teachers tend to perceive that environmental factors such as deficient leaderships, undetermined teaching roles, work overload, overcrowded classrooms, unmotivated students, and disconnection of parents from their educational role, would be the main threats to their mental health. The psychological resources, coping styles and context perception presented by the teachers in the study are discussed.

The objective of this study was to understand which factors contribute most to Psychology and Teaching graduates' satisfaction with their university professional formation. Two factors were assessed: the level of admissions selectivity by the university attended, and the salary received once employed. The participants graduated from three universities in Chile, one public and two private selected as representing three levels of university selectivity. The sample was constructed by random selection among five cohorts of graduates, from 2012 to 2016. A self-report questionnaire was administered on two occasions, in 2015 for the first three cohorts and in 2017 for the last two. The obtained sample included 587 graduates, in Psychology and in Teaching of Basic Education. The results reveal that selectivity is related to graduates' satisfaction with their university experience; the more selective the university in which they are admitted, the more graduates are satisfied. Salary, on the other hand, is related to satisfaction only in the case of the least selective university. The findings provide some directions for how universities can improve graduates' satisfaction.

The integration of immersive technology is one of the main trends in education. The purpose of this study is to understand how elementary school students experience the use of immersive technology, considering three properties: interactivity, presence, and flow. A natural science pedagogical intervention that incorporated the use of virtual reality and augmented reality was elaborated. 231 students from four schools in Concepción, Chile, participated. After the intervention, an instrument was applied to learn about the immersive experience. Findings indicate a high degree of agreement with the instrument's statements, which allows us to determine favourable levels of interactivity, presence, and flow, as well as the significant and positive association of these technological properties. Guidelines are proposed to maximise the capacity of immersive technologies in learning environments.

In recent decades in Chile, generic skills have been made explicit in the graduation profiles and curricula of all programs of higher education institutions, following global trends that relate to labor market expectations on the employability of graduates. The institutional characteristics, mission, educational model, and institutional seal condition the choice of the generic skills that are developed. There are no current standards for the process of definition of generic skills sets in the various programs for the different universities. The same is true for the modality of implementation for them. The present article has the purpose of contributing to the knowledge of both the definition and implementation of generic skills inside higher education institutions in Chile. This process becomes relevant in the context of the new demands of students and graduates who face additional employment challenges.

This study was designed to understand the multi-layered aspects and conflicts that shaped the identity development of English language pre-service teachers in Chile. This longitudinal, multiple case study research investigated the identity trajectories of seven EFL Chilean pre-service teachers over an 18-month period. Data were drawn from a range of sources, including semi-structured interviews, analysis of recorded lessons, and pedagogical artefacts. Framed by a sociocultural perspective, student teachers' perezhivanie and lived experiences were examined. This work found that the transition to a developed English language teacher identity was a slow and recursive process and shaped by multiple interactions and situations of conflict in practice. Strong and conflicting emotions of joy, self-fulfilment and frustration, anxiety, and self-doubts were recurrent. These findings contribute to the understanding of how English language teacher identity is developed in the Global South. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Friendship can be critical at any age but considering the gifts and challenges of twice-exceptional students, friends can be an essential element in navigating school years. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions that close friends of twice-exceptional students have about their friendship, characteristics, and how they relate to classmates and teachers. The sample was comprised of 17 students. Under a qualitative design, in-depth interviews were conducted with friends of students who were gifted with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or with autism spectrum disorder. Results showed a deep relationship, in which friends of twice-exceptional students were able to make a realistic depiction of them, which was based on empathy, common interests, and a connection that stems from facing adversity. The results are not only a contribution to current research but also take a positive and strengths-based angle not always found in the literature. Implications for practice and research were discussed.

In Chile, a vast and persistent gender gap in math performance at university admission has negative consequences for women's opportunities. International evidence suggests that these gender differences reflect gender inequities in educational and economic opportunities available in a given culture. A theoretical model suggests that sociocultural factors such as gender stereotype and math anxiety have an impact on women's math abilities by affecting their skills for cognitive reflection. This cross-sectional study collected data from 259 university students to gather preliminary evidence on the close relationship between gender gaps in math achievement and gender gaps in cognitive reflection. A mediation analysis shows that the level of cognitive reflection of students fully mediates the effect of gender on math achievement, even after controlling for participants' linguistic abilities. These findings support the possibility that there is a close relationship between gender differences in cognitive reflection and gender gaps in math achievement at university admission in Chile. The discussion emphasizes that the university admission's data is under the control of state agencies with strict protocols of information access that undermines the feasibility of researching this area. Assessments of cognitive reflection are easy to administer in only a few minutes and under laboratory conditions. Hence, one way to boost the viability of research and diagnosis of gender gaps in Chile is to use cognitive reflection assessments as proximal estimates for gender gaps in math performance at university admission.

The purpose of this study was to empirically test two major theoretical models: a modified version of the social capital model (Pattie, Seyd and Whiteley, 2003), and the Informed Social Engagement Model (Barr and Selman, 2014; Selman and Kwok, 2010), to explain civic participation and civic knowledge of adolescents from Chile, Colombia and Mexico, using data from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study 2009 (Schulz, et al., 2010). The models were used to identify factors associated with different levels of knowledge and civic participation: expected participation in legal and illegal protests, and electoral participation. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. Results show that the Informed Social Engagement approach (ISEM), explains better the observed differences in civic knowledge and civic participation, than the Social Capital Model (SCM). That is, the expected values associated with the variables included in the ISEM are closer to the observed values, than those predicted by the SCM. This is true for the three outcomes (expected participation in legal protests, illegal protests, and electoral participation) and in the three countries analyzed (Chile, Colombia and Mexico).

Samples of bones (humerus) and claws of adult Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) were opportunistically obtained from twenty-seven carcasses at two important nesting sites in northern Chile: Chañaral Island (CHI) and Pan de Azúcar Island (PAI). The concentrations of trace elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Fe, Se, As, Br, Mn and Cr) were determined by X-ray fluorescence. The highest levels (mean ± standard deviation, µg/g dry weight) of Cu (26.57 ± 4.08), Zn (163.9 ± 42.7), Pb (1.86 ± 1.53), Ni (0.31 ± 0.03), Se (7.70 ± 4.87) and Cr (0.25 ± 0.24) were detected in bones, whereas the highest levels of Fe (3,162 ± 1,579), As (6.75 ± 4.21), Br (0.12 ± 0.06) and Mn (76.7 ± 47.9) were found in claws. In bones, Se and Ni levels were higher (P < 0.05) in CHI than in PAI. In claws, the contents of Pb, Fe, and Mn were higher at CHI than those at PAI, whereas only As exhibited higher contents at PAI than those found at CHI. The trace element content in the claws and bones found herein may be the result of either acute or chronic exposure to penguins, respectively. These findings may serve as a baseline for further studies to design adequate and opportune plans to protect this vulnerable species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the effect of fish total length (LT) and three water temperatures (10, 15 and 20 °C) on the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) of the species Percilia irwini (2.9–6.3 cm LT), Cheirodon galusdae (3.4–5.5 cm LT), and Trichomycterus areolatus (4.0–6.3 cm LT). An Ucrit estimation model was constructed for each species as a function of temperature and size. The results showed mean Ucrit for P. irwini of 44.56, 53.83 and 63.2 cm s−1 at 10, 15 and 20 °C, respectively: 55.34, 61.74 and 70.05 cm s−1 for C. galusdae and 56.18, 63.01 and 71.09 cm s−1 for T. areolatus. Critical velocity depended on the interaction between species, body length and water. The swimming performance increased significantly with rising temperature in all three species. The velocity also increased with greater fish total length. After controlling for fish total length, velocity also increased with higher temperature in the three species. This paper draws from a broader research project and reports on a qualitative multi-case study that investigated the learning experiences of seven Chilean teacher candidates during their practicum. The purpose was to know what they learned from students' contexts during their clinical experiences and how they used that knowledge in their teaching. Semi-structured interviews, class observations, and documents such as portfolios and lesson plans were used as primary sources. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) was used as the theoretical framework. Findings show that building strong relationships with students was the main vehicle to develop socially and culturally responsive practices. Three contextual components (type of institution, students' backgrounds and diversity, and complexity and vulnerability of contexts) were identified as essential mediators for advancing a CRP approach. After providing insight on how the practicum shaped participants' thinking and teaching in ways that embody CRP, the paper addresses implications for initial teacher education.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine which of the two variables would be a more reliable proxy for quality of university training--graduates' satisfaction with their degree program, or institutional prestige. Design/methodology/approach: Graduates of professional psychology and teaching programs from three Chilean universities responded to a questionnaire asking their perception of different aspects of their degree program and experiences in their first employment. The three universities differ significantly in the proportion of applicants admitted, and in their prestige. Findings: Salary levels are highly related to profession, but unrelated to graduates' ratings of quality of curriculum or teaching methods. Overall satisfaction with the university experience is not linked to job satisfaction. Job satisfaction, on the other hand, is highly influenced by salary and secondarily by instructional practices and perceived work relevance of the degree program. Research limitations/implications: This study is based on data from 3 of Chile's 60 universities, and graduates of two programs. Most employment in the two professions is regulated by labor agreements. Generalizability of results is limited. Graduates may not have been employed enough to demonstrate their capacities. Practical implications: The findings offer more evidence that prestige ratings are an unreliable indicator of the quality of formation offered by universities. If the government seeks to reduce income inequality, public subsidies of higher education should be based on program quality rather than on institutional prestige. Originality/value: The findings are directly relevant to the current debate in Chile about what might and what might not help to reduce severe economic inequality.

This paper analyzes the impact of a Course Transformation process based on a Flipped Classroom strategy on Chilean Engineering students' attitudes toward university-level mathematics. The Attitudes Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) questionnaire was applied as both pre- and post-test to 76 students in three mathematic courses (Calculus I, Calculus II and Elements of Algebra for Computing) at Universidad Católica de Temuco's Faculty of Engineering which adopted a flipped classroom method. The results showed a significant positive change in the perceived value of mathematics in the four ATMI categories (P < 0.05) with different effect sizes after the implementation of the flipped classroom and active learning strategies. The results suggest that the implementation of transformed courses using a Flipped Classroom method has a positive effect on students' attitudes toward Mathematics, especially in those who come from families with lower economical income.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that Latin America and the Caribbean experienced the most rapid rise in food insecurity, with approximately 47.7 million individuals in the region affected by hunger in 2022. In Chile, almost three million people, 15.6% of the country's population, do not have regular access to sufficient nutritious food and suffer from some form of food insecurity. Moreover, Chile is particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change and contends with the depletion of several critical natural resources, notably water, stemming from severe and prolonged drought conditions. This article aims to comprehensively evaluate food loss and waste (FLW) in Chile and analyzes the implications of FLW on the sustainable development goal (SDG). This will be achieved by utilizing a top-down mass balance methodology that integrates various data sources and an in-depth analysis of the main food categories at different stages of the food supply chain (FSC). In 2021, Chile generated 5.18 million tons of FLW, with fruit being the largest contributor at 2.5 million tons (48% of total FLW). Vegetables accounted for 0.8 million tons (16%). Other food groups each contributed 1% to 10% of the total FLW. Per capita FLW was 295 kg. FLW varied by food group and FSC stage. Fruits, vegetables, starchy roots, and pulses had the most FLW early in the FSC, while cereals had it later. Comparing FLW with the domestic supply quantity of food, it is observed that 68% of the fruit available for the population was discarded. Vegetables and starchy roots also showed significant volumes of discarded food, with 48% and 29% of the availability of these products in Chile. Furthermore, we explore the implications of FLW on realizing SDG 2—zero hunger, particularly emphasizing its correlation with target 12.3. The research underscores the potential of its findings to significantly shape public policies and strategies concerning FLW and their alignment with the associated SDGs, making a tangible impact on the lives of millions. Some of the dynamics present in European countries and the United States are also observed in Chile, particularly those related to the segregation of the school system and private provision and funding at the tertiary level. Some universities, often the most prestigious in a higher education system, select qualified applicants solely on the basis of their measured academic or cognitive abilities. The universities' assumption is that these cognitive abilities are an accurate and complete measure of the applicants' capacity to benefit from university study. This study assesses the extent to which the cognitive measures used are partially the result of other, non-cognitive factors unrelated to future academic performance. Sole reliance on cognitive measures skews university admission in favour of those of higher socioeconomic status. Data for the study were collected by the University of Chile's Department of Evaluation, Measurement and Educational Registration (DEMRE) from 190,000 applicants seeking admission to Chile's 39 selective universities in 2019. The analysis identifies the direct and indirect effects of variables measuring applicants' cognitive and non-cognitive attributes. Logistic regression models were constructed to estimate the differential effect of the two types of factors on admission. The results indicate that non-cognitive factors have an indirect effect on admission through their effect on cognitive scores. Access to selective universities in Chile is partially influenced by students' prior social, cultural, and economic conditions. As a consequence, university education is distributed partially on the basis of social origin and not just ability. This paper explores the patterns of use of print materials and digital resources in an undergraduate library in a Chilean university, by the students' discipline and year of study. A quantitative analysis was carried out, including descriptive analysis of contingency tables, chi-squared tests, t-tests, and multiple linear regressions. The results showed that the use of the library by undergraduate students did not follow a common pattern and instead varied across disciplines. The article also shows that access to digital resources does not replace the use of print materials.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the utility of combining event-centred and variable-centred approaches when analysing big data for higher education institutions. It uses a large, university-wide data set to demonstrate the methodology for this analysis by using the case study method. It presents empirical findings about relationships between student behaviours in a learning management system (LMS) and the learning outcomes of students, and further explores these findings using process modelling techniques. Design/methodology/approach: The paper describes a two-year study in a Chilean university, using big data from a LMS and from the central university database of student results and demographics. Descriptive statistics of LMS use in different years presents an overall picture of student use of the system. Process mining is described as an event-centred approach to give a deeper level of understanding of these findings. Findings: The study found evidence to support the idea that instructors do not strongly influence student use of an LMS. It replicates existing studies to show that higher-performing students use an LMS differently from the lower-performing students. It shows the value of combining variable- and event-centred approaches to learning analytics. Research limitations/implications: The study is limited by its institutional context, its two-year time frame and by its exploratory mode of investigation to create a case study. Practical implications: The paper is useful for institutions in developing a methodology for using big data from a LMS to make use of event-centred approaches. Originality/value: The paper is valuable in replicating and extending recent studies using event-centred approaches to analysis of learning data. The study here is on a larger scale than the existing studies (using a university-wide data set), in a novel context (Latin America), that provides a clear description for how and why the methodology should inform institutional approaches.

The literature mostly has addressed the determinants of entrepreneurial intention in general and social entrepreneurship, without focusing specifically on sustainable entrepreneurial intention despite it has become highly relevant in addressing environmental degradation and social challenges. This study aims to contributes to the understanding of psychological and social factors that influence sustainable business, evaluating the effect of resilience, subjective norms, and perceived social support on sustainable entrepreneurial intention. We analysed the online survey responses of 433 students from Chile and Ecuador enrolled in business and engineering programs using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Models (PLS-SEM), moreover, a multi-group analysis (MGA) has been conducted to assess gender differences. The findings have supported the positive effect of psychological resilience and subjective norms on perceived social support, besides, an important effect of social support on sustainable entrepreneurial intention was found. These results offer new evidence regarding the significance of the social environment, support networks, and resilience of university students in fostering the establishment of sustainable businesses with a focus on social well-being and environmental protection in Latin America. This is particularly pertinent as the countries in this region are grappling with social and environmental challenges that could be addressed through sustainable entrepreneurship. Background: Although about 10% of the Latin American population is indigenous, ethnic differences in disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) and life expectancy with disability (DLE) are unknown. Objective: To estimate disability-free life expectancy and disabled life expectancy among Mapuche (the largest indigenous group) and non-indigenous older adults aged 60 years or more in Chile. Method: Disability was measured following a methodology that combines limitations of daily living, cognitive impairment and dependence previously validated in Chile. Finally, the DFLE was estimated using Sullivan's method combining life tables by ethnicity and disability proportions from the EDES survey designed for the study of ethnic differentials in health and longevity in Chile. Results: Non-Indigenous people have a higher total and Disability-free life expectancy compared to Mapuche people at all ages. While at age 60 a Mapuche expects to live 18.9 years, of which 9.4 are disability-free, a non-Indigenous expects to live 26.4 years, of which 14 are disability-free. In addition, although the length of life with disability increases with age for both populations, Mapuche who survive to age 80 or 90 expect to live 84% and 91% of their remaining life with disability, higher proportions compared to non-indigenous people (62.9% and 75%, respectively). Conclusions: This is the first study addressing inequities in DFLE between the Mapuche and non-Indigenous population, reflected in lower total life expectancy, lower DFLE and higher DLE in Mapuche compared to the non-Indigenous population. Simple Summary: Galaxias maculatus plays an important ecological and socioeconomic role in Chile. We determine the sex ratio, sexual maturity stages, gonadosomatic index, spawning period, type and frequency of spawning, and fecundity under experimental culture. The sex ratio was close to 1:1. First sexual maturity was reached at one year of age in 50% of the population. The highest GSI in both females and males was found in August. Nevertheless, females have a long spawning period, divided into two subperiods; the highest reproductive peak occurs between September and October, and the minor peak occurs between December and February. The females spawned between 3 and 10 times over a period of two months. The number of embryos per female per day varied from 1 to 429, while the total number of embryos per female during the entire season varied from 163 to 1044. This knowledge will be useful to establish future reproductive programs in captivity as a strategy for sustainable fishery and aquaculture management. This study determines the reproductive patterns of puye (Galaxias maculatus) under culture conditions. A population of 567 wild fish was caught in the Cautín River, Chile, and held in captivity for four years. Mortality, sex ratio, gonadosomatic index (GSI), sexual maturity stages, spawning period, type and frequency of spawning, and fecundity were measured. The fish grew throughout the experimental period, with the fastest rate during the first half of the first year of life. The highest mortality occurred during the first three months of the experiment and during the spawning season. The sex ratio was almost 1:1 (female:male). First sexual maturity was reached at one year of age, with an average weight of 0.85 ± 0.01 g, total length of 4.85 ± 0.16 cm, and condition factor 0.0074. The highest GSI in both females (12.14 ± 0.74) and males (17.7 ± 2.70) was recorded in August. Nevertheless, the females spawned 3 to 10 times between September and February, with the highest reproductive peak between September and October. The number of embryos per female per day varied from 1 to 429, while the total number of embryos per female during the entire season evaluated varied from 163 to 1044. There was a high correlation (r = 0.82) between absolute fecundity and body weight. Although further studies are needed in this field, these results are basic for establishing future reproductive programs in captivity as a strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management. This article reviews scientific studies in which heat was used as a natural tracer to investigate stream–aquifer interactions in the Silala River in Chile and provide evidence that was used to support a legal dispute between Chile and Bolivia over the status and use of the waters of this watercourse. Streambed temperature time series at various locations downstream of the Chile‐Bolivia international border showed that water flows downwards through the streambed sediments, from the river towards the fluvial aquifer. These findings are consistent with hydraulic head measurements performed at the study site. Additionally, fiber‐optic distributed temperature sensing (FO‐DTS) methods were employed to observe river temperatures with a spatial resolution of the order of 0.5 m in a river reach of ~1.3 km. FO‐DTS technology allowed detection of various warm springs that discharged their waters into the Silala River, as well as the location of an artesian well that supplies the river with ~90 L/s of deep groundwater at ~20 °C. The results provided improved understanding of the Silala River hydrogeology, and were used to calibrate and validate a groundwater model of the system, reported elsewhere. Both methodologies demonstrated that the river is indeed a system of surface waters and groundwaters interacting as a unitary whole, a key aspect of the definition of an international watercourse, and generated valuable scientific evidence to support a major international legal dispute. Introduction: The D antigen variants are classified as weak, partial, and extremely weak (DEL) and can be differentiated using molecular tests. In Chile, the laboratories of local blood centers do not identify variants of the D antigen, referring them for study to the Reference Laboratory of the Public Health Institute of Chile. So, our aim was to talk about the results of the molecular analysis of variants of the D antigen in samples that had different results in the serological classification. Methods: In the D antigen classification of the Rh system, 479 samples with serological discrepant results were sent for molecular analysis. The Rh phenotype was performed withmonoclonal anti-C, anti-c, anti-E, and anti-e antisera by direct agglutination. To find the D antigen, researchers used direct agglutination with monoclonal antisera and indirect antiglobulin testing with the column (gel) agglutination method. Molecular analysis was performed with a polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (SSP-PCR) and sequencing. Results and discussion: The presence of D antigen variants was confirmed in 332 samples (69.3%), with an initial discrepancy in serological classification. In this group of discrepant samples, the frequency of weak RhD variants was 66% (219/332), that of extremely weak RhD was 28% (93/332), and that of partial RhD was 6% (20/332). The weak variants type 2 (27.4%), type 3 (8.4%), type 48 (8.4%), and type 1 (8.1%) were the next most prevalent variants after RHD*DEL43 (28%). The ccEe (R2r) phenotype was the most frequently detected (38.4%) and is present in 87% of the RHD*DEL43 samples. The E antigen is associated with the presence of this variant. Our analyses give the first description of D antigen variants in Chile. The most common variants are DEL type (RHD*DEL43) and weak (weak type 2), which are linked to the ccDEe (R2r) phenotype. These findings allow us to characterize the variants of the D antigen in Chile and, according to the obtained data, to design strategies for the management of donors, patients, and pregnant women. The frequency and severity of wildfires in Mediterranean climate regions have increased in the last decades due to changes in climatic conditions and land use. This change in the fire regime has increased the threat to forest, shrublands and agricultural lands. To evaluate to what extent wildfires could affect agricultural soils, we evaluated 40 properties of soil samples collected at two depths (0-5 and 5-10 cm) in areas affected by moderate severity wildfires 14 mo prior, and the immediately neighboring unburned area. The overall most relevant soil properties to differentiate between burned and unburned soil, regardless its sampling depth, were selected as soil quality indicators and used to compute a soil quality index. Accordingly, carboxylesterase activity, available soil moisture, pH, Ca, P, Fe, B, S and Cu were selected using a two-way ANOVA. The results showed that carboxylesterase activity decreased from 0.49 ± 0.18 to 0.26 ± 0.16 µmol h-1 g-1 dry soil, and available soil moisture was reduced from 9.85 ± 0.83 to 8.33 ± 0.52 cm in burned soils. Also, pH significantly decreased from 7.30 ± 0.14 to 6.27 ± 0.23 which affected the subsequent nutrient availability. Thus, Ca and P decreased from 6.50 ± 1.78 to 3.95 ± 0.91 cmol(+) kg-1 and from 10.72 ± 2.84 to 7.44 ± 0.91 mg kg-1 respectively, whereas Fe increased from 3.89 ± 0.97 to 16.75 ± 3.13 mg kg-1, Cu and S availability doubled, and B content increase by 29%. The overall soil quality index revealed a nonsignificant decreased between unburned (0.59 ± 0.03) and burned (0.55 ± 0.04) soils 14 mo after the fire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generativity, manifested through interest in and commitment to the development of future generations, is a relevant dimension of teaching culture. Objective: To characterize the personal and professional development manifested by educators working in rural schools in Chile. Method: An interpretative-qualitative approach was adopted, based on an exploratory, cross-sectional and non-experimental design. The purposive sample consisted of 18 educators with an average age of 60 and with 33 years of professional experience in rural schools in the Metropolitan, Araucanía and Los Ríos regions (Chile). For the data collection, in-depth interviews were conducted from a narrative-generative perspective. The narratives were analyzed by means of content analysis. Results: Four categories were identified relating to generativity: significant life experiences, pedagogical dimensions of generative development, generative-expansive adulthood and personal formation. The implications of generativity for teaching practice and the way in which it shapes the educational legacy that transcends school space and time are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diet of Rufous-legged Owl, Strix rufipes, a small raptor present in an Andean protected area, is described here. During the fall of 2017, 44 pellets were collected in the study area, being subsequently analyzed. The occurrence of small mammal prey items in pellets was compared with capture frequencies with live-trapping through Sherman traps. Regarding occurrence frequencies in the diet, arthropods were the most frequent (49.34%), followed by mammals (39.31%), birds (7.86%) and reptiles (3.37%). However, in terms of biomass, mammals had the highest biomass contribution. The observed frequency of consumed preys showed a random pattern, according to the captures of small mammals obtained with Sherman traps. The role of wildfire in the composition of prey in the observed trophic spectrum of these forest owls is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: People with chronic diseases in their advanced phase require palliative care. This is essential to ensure their quality of life as it ends. However, a very low percentage of patients receive the necessary palliative care. The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the planning and provision of palliative care. Despite this, in Chile, palliative care coverage was extended by law to cover nononcological chronic diseases. Implementation of this law is expected to be a significant challenge in terms of material resources, as well as the need for the formation of specialized palliative care teams. Therefore, it is essential to estimate the need for palliative care for all chronic diseases to generate useful input for planning and decision-making in public health. Objectives: To indirectly estimate the need for palliative care among people with Chronic Oncological Diseases (COD) and Chronic Non-Oncological Diseases (CNOD) during the prepandemic and pandemic context due to COVID-19 in the Biobío Region in Chile. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on mortality data from chronic oncological and nononcological diseases during the prepandemic (2010-2018) and pandemic (2020-2021) contexts due to COVID-19 in a Region of Chile through indirect estimation using minimal estimate, standardized mortality rates and geographically weighted regression. Results: It was estimated that 76.25% of deaths from chronic diseases in the Biobío Region would have required palliative care, which represents 77,618 people who should have been included in these health benefits. The pandemic had a significant effect on the average number of deaths from CNOD. People belonging to this group were more likely to die from COVID-19 than from their baseline disease, unlike the deaths of people from COD, where no significant changes were observed. Conclusion: These estimates highlight the potential size of the population requiring palliative care and emphasize the importance of recognizing the rights of individuals with COD and CNOD conditions. It is evident that there is a significant demand for palliative care services, as well as a pressing need for adequate resources, effective management, and strategic planning to cater to the needs of this population. Child exposure to maltreatment and neglect constitutes a significant public health problem throughout Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. Although evidence‐based parent training (PT) interventions constitute an empirically demonstrated alternative to prevent child maltreatment and neglect, multiple implementation barriers have prevented the large‐scale dissemination of evidence‐based PT interventions across LAC countries. This selective prevention study consisted of an exploratory quasi‐experimental design implemented in Chile, aimed at examining the initial impact of a culturally adapted version of the evidence‐based PT intervention known as GenerationPMTO©. The parenting intervention was adapted in a previous pilot study, according to a rigorous model of cultural adaptation. Based on self‐reports completed by 281 caregivers, when compared to baseline measurements, significant improvements at intervention completion were observed in the majority of caregivers' parenting practices, as well as child internalizing and externalizing problematic behaviors. This study provides promising initial empirical evidence that efficacious PT interventions developed in the US can be transported to Latin American contexts, as long as they are thoroughly adapted to achieve high contextual and cultural relevance. In this paper, a modified empirical large-territorial-scale procedure to assess the seismic vulnerability of aggregate buildings in urban areas located within a highly seismic context is proposed. The methodology is applied to a group of unreinforced masonry (URM) aggregates located in the Yungay's historic center in downtown Santiago, Chile. This assessment was carried out by modifying and integrating a vulnerability-index-based procedure, a specific existing approach called first level macro-seismic method used to predict seismic damage and loss scenarios through fragility curves of structural components. The procedure was calibrated using the observed damage after the 2010 Chile earthquake in 292 URM structural units. The results of this new damage index for URM aggregate buildings are used to derive Probability Mass Functions (PMFs) of the different damage states and preliminary Empirical Fragility Functions (EFFs). To the best of the authors' knowledge, these EFFs are the first publicly available for aggregate Chilean URM buildings. This research and its results are the starting point for a more comprehensive study for assessing damage scenarios and vulnerabilities of aggregate URM buildings in historic centers of older Chilean cities. These functions may be used in risk assessment, and are useful to prioritize possible future damage mitigation strategies and other processes involving this historical heritage. We foresee that these results could be at least partially applied to other historical urban areas in Chile, and perhaps other old Latin American cities located along the subduction convergence region between the Pacific and Continental plates, which were founded similarly. Located in the Puchuncaví Valley (PV) in central Chile is one of the most important and oldest industrial complexes (ICs) in the country. The PV is affected by anthropogenic emissions from the IC where the most important industry is a copper smelter and refinery. In this context, this study assessed the profile, concentration, and enrichment factors of the trace elements, both in the soil and in Cupressus macrocarpa leaves from this high-pollution-load area. The soil and leaf samples were taken from five selected sites, located between 0.8 and 15 km away from the IC. A total of 24 elements were analyzed by ICP-MS and examined by enrichment factor (EF), and PCA source analysis. Leaf concentrations of Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, K, and Sr showed statistically significant differences between sampling sites (p-value < 0.05). In soil, element concentrations of Al, As, Ba, Cr, Cu, K, Li Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Ti showed statistically significant differences between sampling sites (p-value < 0.05). The source analysis of EFs in the samples of both soil and leaves detected three and four factors, respectively, related mainly to the industrial complex's copper smelter and refinery, coal-fired power plants, and geogenic sources. According to the PCA, the leaf EFs of anthropogenic elements from copper smelting showed that La Greda (LG, site closest to the IC) was significantly enriched in the elements Cu, Zn, As, Mo, and Pb, while the EF in the soil from LG showed high enrichment in Cu and significant enrichment in Pb.
