The chronology of the Inka Empire is poorly resolved, with most scholars utilizing a post hoc ethnohistoric reconstruction of imperial expansion as a common reference point. Radiocarbon-based analyses can now accomplish sufficient resolution for meaningful independent estimates of Inka chronology, however, and it is incumbent upon archaeologists to develop such appraisals. Here we produce a Bayesian analysis of radiocarbon data from the Upper Loa River area of northern Chile to estimate the timing of Inka incorporation of this region. In order to accurately associate samples with Inka rule, only radiocarbon dates from Inka sites without prior occupations are used (n = 34), producing a model for the onset of Inka rule of AD 1401–1437 (95% hpd) with a median date of AD 1420. This estimate is further used as a point of comparison for understanding diachronic imperial processes in the region. Site-level models of a variety of site types indicate that the Inka rapidly founded several administrative/mining bases at the onset, followed by the addition of smaller infrastructure components during a second pulse of activity near the middle of the 15th century. Date assemblages at the agricultural sites of Topaín and Paniri also indicate a decline in activity at the former and an increase in activity at the latter from early on in Inka rule. These results provide a high-resolution data point for reconstructing Inka imperial chronology, and expanding such studies will be essential to understanding processes of Inka imperialism at larger scales. Despite the global expansion of forest plantations in Chile, their effect on biology properties of soil has still been only scarcely studied. Land use change in the Chilean Coastal Cordillera (36° to 40° S) is mainly attributed to the conversion of native forest to agriculture and forest plantations (Eucalyptus globulus and Pinus radiata de Don). The aim of this paper was to evaluate the changes in microbial composition (PCR-DGGE) and enzyme activity after the substitution of a native forest (e.g., Nothofagus spp.) by fast-growing exotic species and cropping. The most important factors that influence the abundance and diversity of bacteria and the fungi community were the soil organic matter (SOM) content, phosphorous (P-Olsen), calcium (Ca), boron (B), and water-holding capacity. These variables can better predict the microbial community composition and its enzymatic activity in the surface Ah horizon. Land use change also affected chemical soil properties of biogeochemical cycles. However, to deeply understand the connection between chemical and physical soil factors and microbial community composition, more research is needed. On the other hand, the expansion of forest plantations in Chile should be subject to legislation aimed to protect the biological legacy as a strategy for forest productivity as well as the soil microbial biodiversity. Political aspects of imperial architecture are usually evaluated in terms of the symbolism of specific buildings as opposed to overall site planning and layout. This reflects a shortcoming in our understanding of imperial tactics, as provincial site layouts were likely politically calculated. Here we present an architectural study of the Inka provincial capital of Turi, a well-preserved local population center in northern Chile co-opted for Inka imperial administration of the Atacama Desert area. We reevaluate layout planning at the site using concepts of building coordination and inter-site standardization to identify potentially planned features, and add to this a chronological study of surface architecture based upon wall-abutments and radiocarbon dates associated with a sample of building events. Results indicate significant Inka-era remodeling took the pre-existing site's layout in a more coordinated and monumental direction, serving to increase site symmetry, reference political ideas through inter-site standardization, and focus greater attention upon Inka political buildings. Political buildings themselves grew more formalized and monumental over the course of the imperial occupation, culminating in the construction of a large kallanka state building near the end of the 15th century. Overall, we argue that layout remodeling was used to form increasingly strong architectural pronouncements of state legitimacy over time, and that moving past a 'planned' versus 'unplanned' conceptual binary will aid in gleaning more information from imperial sites in future research. The ocean has always been a source of inspiration for past and present civilizations, especially for those involved in fishing activities. The regular fishing of large pelagic fish by past societies using harpoons has been demonstrated, with several studies reporting the discovery of an important fishery of large pelagic fish (including swordfish) dating from as early as the sixth millennium BCE on the North Chilean Pacific Coast. The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is a cosmopolitan, highly migratory species found in all warm and temperate oceans and seas, and mercury is known to bioamplify along food webs, increasing with the trophic level of organisms up to these top predators. This study, therefore, analyzes and compares the mercury levels of archeological and modern vertebrae in swordfish. The archeological fish remains were recovered during excavation of the Zapatero archeological site on the northern coast of Chile, and the modern vertebrae were collected from specimens caught in the Pacific Ocean. The archeological vertebrae showed lower levels of mercury in comparison with those of current individuals, despite their larger size. However, the elevated Hg levels in archeological vertebrae proved the presence of naturally occurring mercury in the mid‐Holocene. Analyses on modern vertebrae confirmed the anthropic origin of mercury in the marine food web. Mercury biomagnifies through the marine food chain to swordfish (and humans) and did so even during the Holocene (bioaccumulation phenomenon). This study evidences that vertebrae and bones are potentially good biomarkers of mercury, including for archeological fish remains, and that the possible harmful effects on the health of past human communities can be analyzed and explained by the high consumption of fish. The Atacama Desert is among the driest places on Earth, yet ancient agricultural systems are present in the region. Here, we present a study of terraced agricultural soils in the high‐altitude eastern margin of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, mainly dating to the Late Intermediate Period (ca. 950–1400 AD) and Inka period (ca. 1400–1536 AD). Terraced fields were compartmentalized to distribute limited irrigation water originating mainly from springs. Natural soils used for agriculture are mostly Aridisols developed on Pleistocene alluvial fan terraces and hillslopes underlain by volcanic bedrock. One research objective is to evaluate long‐term soil change from agriculture. In this hyperarid climate, agriculture is only possible with irrigation, so natural soils on the same geomorphic surface adjacent to irrigated soils provide baseline data for assessing anthropogenic soil change. Data from soil profiles and surface transects indicate intentional soil change through terracing, removal of soil rock fragments, and probable fertilization. Agricultural soils have anthropogenic horizons ranging from 16 to 54 cm thick. Most agricultural soils have higher phosphorus levels, suggesting enrichment from fertilization. Changes in soil organic carbon and nitrogen are also evident. Unintentional anthropogenic soil change resulted from CaCO3 input through irrigation with calcareous spring water. Initial studies suggest that agriculture here was sustainable in the sense of conserving soils, and maintaining and possibly improving soil productivity over centuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hunter‐gatherer architectural practices are one of the main sources of data to understand the complex land use of these societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert coast (Northern Chile), hunter‐gatherers‐fishers developed standardized stone‐built architecture during the Late Archaic period (∼5,700–4,000 cal years BP), interpreted so far as sedentary villages or long‐term campsites. Nevertheless, the lack of site formation process studies and systematic chronostratigraphies defy such functional interpretations. To address these issues, we reconstruct the lifecycle of a recently discovered semisubterranean structure at the Zapatero site (~25°S, Taltal). Combining stratigraphy, micromorphology, faunal and lithic analysis, as well as radiocarbon dating, we evidence a broad sequence involving different processes: shell midden formation; a stone‐structure; a prepared burial pit; a burning event; a short‐term occupational episode; and the entombment of the structure. We interpret this sequence as ritualized actions related to commemorative and place‐making activities. Our work stresses the need for new research programs at the Atacama Desert coast, based on geoarchaeological approaches, to understand hunter‐gatherer‐fisher middening and architectural practices from the very materiality involved in stratigraphy‐making processes. Snuff trays are conspicuous objects that are found in archaeological contexts throughout Andean South America. At San Pedro de Atacama, in northern Chile, snuff trays that exhibit iconographic motifs similar to those found on Tiwanaku megalithic monuments have been assigned to the Tiwanaku style. In the present work, we propose a new definition for this style based on the occurrence of three morphological features: an overall trapezoidal shape, incurving sides, and sharp top corners. This group includes trays with iconography from the previously defined Tiwanaku style, as well as other trays without iconography. Principal component analysis shows that Tiwanaku-style trays with and without iconography make up a single group that is significantly different from plain, largely rectangular San Pedro-style trays. The relative proportion of Tiwanaku-style trays with and without iconography does not differ between cultural periods and archaeological sites. The results point to shape as an important trait for assigning trays to styles. Furthermore, the results show that during the Middle period four main types of snuff trays were in use: Tiwanaku trays with and without iconography and local San Pedro trays, also with and without iconography. The coastal Atacama Desert is exposed to strong earthquakes and giant tsunamis associated with the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. Nevertheless, historical and geological records of tsunamis and paleotsunamis in this region are scarce. Taltal (25.4°S) is located at the southern edge of the hyperarid Atacama Desert within a major historical ∼1000 km-long megathrust seismic gap in northern Chile where the most recent large tsunamigenic earthquakes occurred in 1877 CE and 1922 CE, rupturing its northern and southern segments, respectively. By multiproxy geological and archaeological analyses from pits and trenches, we report distinctive strata of reworked archaeological material as well as sedimentary layers that we interpret as being produced by tsunami run-up and/or backwash deposition. We identified two large Holocene paleotsunamis dated close to ∼4000 cal yrs BP and younger than 863 ± 199 CE (∼1087 cal years BP). By comparing the run-ups of the last historical tsunamis with our minimum run-up estimates from the geo-archaeological record, we conclude that the impact of these Holocene paleotsunamis was larger than any known historical event, suggesting the need to re-evaluate local, regional and Pacific basin-scale tsunami hazard assessments. • First report of Holocene paleotsunami deposits in the hyperarid Atacama Desert. • We document two large Holocene paleotsunamis in the northern Chile seismic gap. • We reanalyzed the last large historical tsunamis in northern Chile. • We suggest a re-assessment of the Pacific-wide tsunami hazard. Early maritime adaptation is well known from eastern South America; however, evidence for navigation and large marine fish exploitation, indicative of skilled foraging techniques, remains scarce. In the Atacama Desert, north central Chile, coastal archaeological sites show that during the Middle Holocene people relied mostly on marine resources. However, evidence from one of the shell middens (Zapatero – 7400–5900 cal BP) indicates that not only were shallow waters and marine mammals exploited, but that a dedicated fishery for large pelagic fish (mainly billfish) existed; with indications suggesting that large swordfish, weighing up to 300 kg, were being caught and brought back complete to the settlement. Although the peculiar topographic and oceanographic features of the area probably allowed pelagic fish to come well inshore, this is still the oldest evidence worldwide for such a fishery. These results provide new insights into maritime adaptation and seafaring along the Chilean coast from as early as the sixth millennium BCE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
