Projects have become an essential instrument for the success of universities. In a context of globalization and increasing complexity, they must sharpen their resourcefulness to face these challenges and adapt to this changing environment. To reach these objectives, they undertake a series of activities of a unique, concrete and temporary nature, not always technical but managerial ones. If universities work with people on projects in the production, transmission and dissemination of knowledge, then they link with society to solve its problems. For this reason, teaching and research staff (TRS) should promote a range of professional project management (PM) competences in different areas for the proper management of the projects in which they take part. Through a Delphi technique, a panel of twenty-four accredited teaching experts who are carrying out significant research and holding directive roles, measured the importance of acquiring and/or improving professional PM competences by their TRS. Consensus and stability reached after two rounds of consultation confirmed there are a series of crucial competences for the practice of relevant teaching and pioneer research. Results obtained are the basis for a gap plan that allows the TRS to participate in and/or lead university projects with greater self-confidence and personal motivation.

This paper presents an empirical analysis of the socioeconomic status (SES) school segregation in Chile, whose educational system is regarded as an extreme case of a market-oriented education. The study estimated the magnitude and evolution of the SES segregation of schools at both national and local levels, and it studied the relationship between some local educational market dynamics and the observed magnitude of SES school segregation at municipal level. The main findings were: first, the magnitude of the SES segregation of both low-SES and high-SES students in Chile was very high (Duncan Index ranged from 0.50 to 0.60 in 2008); second, during the last decade, SES school segregation tended to slightly increase in Chile, especially in high schools (both public and private schools); third, private schools--including voucher schools--were more segregated than public schools for both low-SES and high-SES students; and finally, some market dynamics operating in the Chilean education (like privatization, school choice, and fee-paying) accounted for a relevant proportion of the observed variation in SES school segregation at municipal level. These findings are analyzed from an educational policy perspective in which the link between SES school segregation and market-oriented mechanisms in education plays a fundamental role.

The rocky shores in Chile have a wide invertebrate species diversity, that include species with marked abundances in determined regions. The aim of the present study is to analyse the spatial distribution pattern in different marine invertebrate species in rocky shore of Araucania region, considering if these species have random, uniform or associated patterns, and extrapolate if these patterns have Poisson, binomial or negative binomial distribution respectively. The results revealed the presence mainly of gastropods molluscs that would graze on benthic algae, these species have mainly aggregated pattern that has a robust negative binomial distribution pattern. The obtained results agree with observations for marine benthic fauna that mentioned the presence of aggregated pattern, has negative binomial distribution. Other ecological topics about spatial distribution were discussed. As costas rochosas no Chile têm uma ampla diversidade de espécies de invertebrados, que incluem espécies com abundância marcada em determinadas regiões. O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar o padrão de distribuição espacial em diferentes espécies de invertebrados marinhos na costa rochosa da região de Araucanía, considerando se essas espécies possuem padrões aleatórios, uniformes ou associados, e extrapolar se esses padrões possuem distribuição binomial de Poisson, binomial ou negativa. respectivamente. Os resultados revelaram a presença principalmente de moluscos gastrópodes que pastam em algas bentônicas, estas espécies têm principalmente agregado padrão que tem um padrão robusto de distribuição binomial negativa, padrão agregado de grupos, e a fauna de água doce que apresenta distribuição binomial negativa. This study is a review of literature records on diversity, distribution and ecology of the Chilean inland water zooplankton including microcrustaceans (Copepoda, Branchiopoda), rotifera (Bdelloida and Monogononta) and ciliated protozoa. For that, several databases were consulted, and about 239 records were analysed and evaluated. The results revealed that in total about 109 water bodies have been sampled in Chile. Crustacea are well studied in the entire Chilean territory, whereas records on Rotifera and Ciliata are more restricted to the Central and Southern zones. Within Crustacea calanoid copepods of the genus Boeckella and to lower degree Cladocera (Branchiopoda) predominate. Anostraca are reported for hypersaline waterbodies and ephemeral pools, whereas Laevicaudata and Spinicaudata (Branchiopoda) are only found in shallow ephemeral pools. Regarding rotifers, 121 species were identified, whereas 46 species of ciliated protozoa were registered in lentic water bodies of the Southern zone. Ecological studies included different aspects as population dynamics, vertical migration, diapause, role of ultraviolet radiation among others. We discuss also shortcomings and future studies. Future studies should consider more in detail population dynamics, molecular topics to better assess taxonomical determinations, trophic interactions within the food webs and effects of global changes at population and community level. The main focus of this article is evaluation, its relevance, complexity and potential, in the perspective of Higher Education accreditation. Accreditation, institutional and at program level, has a history of twenty years in Chile, through sequential stages. In parallel, the Universidad de Santiago de Chile-USACH has been involved in self-study and systemic evaluation since 1997. The senior authors of this article, in different roles, have participated in this experience, which is the basis of the studies and results here reported. As highlighted in the recent Annual Meeting of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in the U.S., evaluation is a key factor for fostering quality, accountability, and institutional learning. Two main subjects of evaluation are considered critical: institutional effectiveness and student learning. The USACH experience, as much as the national one, has shown the authors a concern for academic goals and their usually qualitative and subjective nature, since the absence of measurement implies seldom certainty that the goals have been really met. The Chilean National Accreditation Commission (CNA) is at present revising its institutional accreditation criteria in order to pass from a "declarative" stage to a "demonstrative" one. In this, to demonstrate means showing evaluated results. Evaluating is often compounded by lack of clear purposes of evaluation subject or object, by use of inappropriate instruments, by mismanagement of political variables, and by lack of the necessary means for recording and storing relevant information. Here the authors present, in a systematized way, the results of exploring several areas of evaluation within the perspective of quality assurance. These areas include learning outcomes, accreditation impact on institutions, and graduates follow-up, among others. This experience has led to developing a general evaluation model, which considers political, technical, financial and operational variables. The model is the outcome of a varied experience on evaluation that includes different subjects such as public program's performance, learning outcomes, undergraduate programs, graduate programs, higher education institutions, and alumni and employers assessment of professional education relevance. In this article some conclusions are drawn that intend to show and stress the big relevance and complexities of systemic institutional evaluation, as a unique tool for quality assurance and, particularly, for strengthening institutional integrity. Integrity means, among other things, the capacity of stating goals and verifying results in a consistent way. The article reports on the occurrence of freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii in the Valparaiso region and other zones in central Chile. This jellyfish species is described as an active zooplankton predator and its prey consists of microcrustaceans and rotiters. It is also distributed across the tropical and subtropical latitudes of South America. It is believed that the cause of its occurrence in Valparaiso was probably an invasive event because it has undergone a notorious dispersion during the 20th century due to factors such as climate change.

Growth (length) was compared in A. franciscana populations from Utah, United States of America, and Yape, Chile, and A. persimilis (population from Salinas de Hidalgo, Argentina), cultured under controlled conditions (24 degrees C, seawater 35 g/l, fed with Chaetoceros calcitrans). There were significant differences among all stages of A. franciscana (Utah) and A. persimilis, whereas we found significant differences only in two stages of A. persimilis and A. franciscana (Yape); both A. franciscana had similar total lengths in all stages analyzed. Habitat adaptations could explain these results.
